Clear mismatch emerges between United star’s preferred role and club’s plans for him – report

Patrick Dorgu’s close confidants have unveiled his surprise preferred position, even as Manchester United’s plan for him ahead of next season emerges. New dimension When United signed Dorgu last year, the intention was to utilise him in the full-back positions. Under Ruben Amorim, he was chiefly deployed as a left-wing-back in the manager’s preferred 3-4-2-1 setup. He showed promising signs but never really settled. The highlight of this was when Amorim claimed that Dorgu radiates anxiety whenever he gets on the ball. One of Michael Carrick’s first calls upon taking charge of the team was deploying Dorgu in an advanced left-wing role. The tactical decision paid instant dividends. Dorgu found the back of the net in Carrick’s first game, a victory over cross-town rivals Manchester City. The Denmark international then produced a sensational strike against Arsenal, though his upward trajectory was subsequently curtailed by an injury that sidelined him for a number of weeks. Dorgu was back on the score sheet on the final day of the Premier League season as United beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0. He’ll be aiming for a fourth consecutive competitive goal when he starts a game in 2026/27. Another strike would extend his impressive run to four on the bounce. The former Lecce man completed the season with four goals and as many assists. Had he not sustained an injury, there is no telling how many more goal contributions he would have racked up. Dorgu has shown just how effective and dangerous he can be on the left of the attack but according to the Manchester Evening News, those close to him believe a different position suits him more. Preferred role Tyrone Marshall writes, “The intriguing aspect here is that some people close to Dorgu actually believe the right-wing is his best position and where he may eventually be at his best.” “That is a fascinating prospect given his displays on the left for United.” United are thought to be targeting reinforcements on the left side of the pitch, in both defensive and attacking roles. Marshall, however, says that if a left-winger is the priority, Dorgu could end up featuring more at left-back. He will provide competition and cover for Luke Shaw. During his stint with Lecce, Dorgu registered 24 appearances at left-back and a further 14 on the left flank. He also featured on 11 occasions as a right-winger and made three outings at right-back. Aston Villa are prepared to pull out all the stops to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, according to a new report. An Awkward Reunion INEOS had hoped to have seen the last of Rashford when a season-long loan, which included a £26 million buy option, was agreed with FC Barcelona last summer. Having lost his way at Old Trafford, the 28-year-old forward found a new lease of life in Catalonia, returning 28 goal contributions as he helped the Blaugrana retain their La Liga title. Instead, the England international, currently on duty at the World Cup in North America, faces an unwelcome return to Old Trafford when the Three Lions’ tournament comes to an end. Barcelona remain interested in agreeing another loan, though United have steadfastly rejected any attempts to negotiate this, insisting on a transfer only. A host of Premier League rivals have expressed interest in the Wythenshawe native, including Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, while Bayern Munich are understood to be monitoring the situation. But Sports Boom reveals it is Aston Villa who are at the front of the queue, with Unai Emery having identified Rashford as “one of his leading target” this summer. A Friendly Reunion Following the public dispute with Ruben Amorim in December 2024, which was fully backed by sporting director Jason Wilcox, Rashford joined Villa on loan for the second half of the campaign, returning four goals and six assists in 17 appearances for his adopted side. The Villans were understood to be open to exploring a permanent deal, though the Englishman only had eyes for Barcelona, who knew they could leverage this to agree a loan without a fee or obligation to buy. But the Midlands side are now ready to “spend big” to bring Rashford back to Villa Park, viewing him as a “statement signing capable of spearheading their next chapter.” EXCL: Aston Villa are prepared to splash the cash for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌟 Unai Emery is a long-time admirer and sees the England forward as a marquee signing to lead Villa’s next step after another strong season.#AVFC #MUFC https://t.co/Nd6ZNJrD9S — Sportsboom (@Sportsboomcom) June 17, 2026 Tweet: “Aston Villa are prepared to splash the cash for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford. Unai Emery is a long-time admirer and sees the England forward as a marquee signing to lead Villa’s next step after another strong season.” Under Emery’s watch, Villa enjoyed one of the best campaigns in their history, finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Europa League with a resounding 3-0 win over Freiburg in the final. However, they are braced to lose talismanic attacker Morgan Rogers – a primary target for United – and will need an experienced left-sided forward to take his place. Rashford’s experience at the highest levels of both club and international football is seen as a major bonus for a side entering the Champions League next season. “With 72 England caps and 18 international goals, Rashford possesses the elite-level experience Villa are seeking. Still only 28, he has plenty of top years ahead of him, and Emery believes he could become the marquee signing to help Villa challenge for major honours once again,” the report concludes. Final Thoughts Rashford’s contract with United, which expires in 2028 and is worth in excess of £325,000 a week, contains a release clause worth £40m to any club bar Liverpool and Manchester City. If Barcelona’s frugality sees INEOS go from reluctantly accepting a £26m switch to Catalania to actively welcoming a £40m bid from Birmingham, the noise of celebration led by Wilcox will echo throughout the corridors of power at Old Trafford. Manchester United’s interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta has sparked a strong response from Crystal Palace, according to a new report. More Reliable No.9 While a revamp in midfield is the Red Devils’ focus this summer, a new striker is also understood to be on the agenda to provide a more reliable source of goals than Joshua Zirkzee. The 24-year-old Dutchman, who was omitted from Ronald Koeman’s squad for the World Cup despite a paucity of options up top for the Netherlands, has proven to be a disastrous signing since arriving from Bologna for £36.5 million in 2024. Nine goals and four assists in 75 appearances is an abject return for a United centre-forward, while his link-up play – an apparent strength – has been inconsistent at best. A return to Serie A is the most likely destination, with a host of Italian clubs interested in securing a player who remains held in high regard despite his struggles in England. In his place, INEOS are intent on adding an experienced No.9 to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko, who enjoyed a superb run under Michael Carrick in the second half of his maiden campaign at Old Trafford after a quiet start under Ruben Amorim. This has led to Mateta – Crystal Palace’s 28-year-old frontman – re-emerging as a target, with United having been linked with a move last summer before agreeing a £74 million fee with RB Leipzig to sign Sesko. Big Man Up Top Mateta has established himself as one of the more underrated strikers in the Premier League, producing a consistent source of goals since arriving at Selhurst Park in 2022. Last season, he scored 12 goals; the campaign before, 14 and two assists; and the year prior to that was his best for the Eagles, with 16 goals and five assists. During this time, Palace have won the FA Cup, Europa Conference League and Community Shield, the first major trophies in the club’s 121-year history. The France international, currently on duty at the World Cup in North America, has been an integral part of this unprecedented success, leading the line with his hulking 6’4″ frame and scoring the winner in the European final against Rayo Vallecano. Sports Boom reveals United have “expressed interest” in a deal this summer, though Newcastle United are also in the hunt alongside Italian heavyweights AC Milan, now managed by Ruben Amorim, and Juventus. EXCL: Crystal Palace are stepping up efforts to tie Jean-Philippe Mateta down to a new lucrative deal.💰✍️ 🏆European champions keen to keep their talisman amid interest from Juventus, AC Milan, Newcastle and Man Utd.#CPFC https://t.co/DBFVp4dRwJ — Sportsboom (@Sportsboomcom) June 17, 2026 Tweet: “Crystal Palace are stepping up efforts to tie Jean-Philippe Mateta down to a new lucrative deal. European champions keen to keep their talisman amid interest from Juventus, AC Milan, Newcastle and Man Utd.” The growing queue for the Sevran native has prompted Palace to accelerate plans to offer a “lucrative new contract” to lock down his future in south London. His current deal expires next year, explaining why his suitors are angling to strike a cut-price deal this summer as it would represent the Eagles’ last chance to demand a fee. However, there is understood to be optimism among the hierarchy at Selhurst Park that Mateta will put pen to paper on the contract, as he is “enthusiastic about working under new boss, Pierre Sage”, who is replacing the departing Oliver Glasner. Final Thoughts Mateta would be an astute signing as a back-up to Sesko, given their physical similarities and the Frenchman’s experience and track record of goals in the Premier League. If a cheap fee could be agreed owing to his contract situation, this would only strengthen the case to escalate their interest. However, Mateta turns 29 in a few weeks and his technical qualities do not align with the centre-forward of a Champions League club. If the interest from elsewhere in Europe emboldens Palace to hike the price, the target man will quickly lose his appeal as a target. Manchester United’s pursuit of Southampton youngster Shea Charles has been rocked by a development involving arch-rivals Leeds United. Charles interest United are prioritising midfield reinforcements this summer as they prepare to play in the Champions League next season and potentially mount a title challenge. Casemiro’s exit has already been confirmed, while there is also uncertainty over the future of Manuel Ugarte. United have already wrapped up a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, who will officially complete his move to the club after Brazil’s involvement in the ongoing World Cup. One of the midfielders United are eyeing is Charles, who enjoyed a superb campaign with Southampton. The youngster bagged four goals and contributed an additional three assists in the 33 Championship appearances he made A dynamic defensive midfielder, Charles spent his early years in Manchester City’s academy. He captained City’s Under-23s and was handed his first-team debut by Pep Guardiola. The 22-year-old joined Southampton permanently in July 2023 in a deal worth up to £15m. He famously scored the goal that knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup. He also registered the match-winning goal against Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off semi-finals, though its significance was ultimately diminished by the subsequent spygate controversy surrounding Southampton. Charles opened up on his future earlier this month and revealed that he is focused on Southampton, although he didn’t close the door on a possible exit. The Northern Ireland international was signed at Southampton by Jason Wilcox, who also knew him from their time together at City. As he continues to be linked with United, the Daily Mail reveal that Leeds are also admirers of the player and are considering launching a swoop for him. Charles update The newspaper reports that Leeds are weighing up a bid for Charles, who is valued at £20m. The report further says, “Leeds want to strengthen the centre of their midfield after tying down captain Ethan Ampadu to a new long-term deal.” “Charles suits their profile as they look to bring in younger, homegrown players who have greater re-sale value as well as the ability to improve their squad immediately.” He is not the only midfielder Leeds are keeping tabs on. Talks have also been held with Sporting CP’s Hidemasa Morita, who is available as a free agent. United will be alert to the threat posed by Leeds United and will take steps to avoid being usurped in the race for his services. Manchester United are supposedly in talks with super agent Jorge Mendes regarding two of his clients. It has been widely reported that United are in active negotiations with Mendes for Mateus Fernandes, who has expressed his preference to join the Red Devils. However, United have yet to send a formal bid to West Ham, who are demanding a staggering £85 million to sanction the Portuguese midfielder’s exit. Meanwhile, Mendes’ other client is thought to be available at a cut-price fee. Manchester United handed glorious opportunity to sign Marc Casado Last week, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Manchester United are monitoring Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado. It was suggested that his agent, Jorge Mendes, has maintained a close relationship with United for years.  Now, Spanish publication MARCA claims Casado has been on United’s radar for quite some time. The Red Devils even reportedly enquired about him in January. The technically gifted 22-year-old Spaniard is now willing to leave his boyhood club in hopes of more minutes and a prominent role elsewhere. Several clubs have asked about him and United are one of them. The report underlines that the Red Devils are “showing the most interest” but have yet to make a formal offer for the Sant Pere de Vilamajor native.  Casado is contracted to Camp Nou until 2028, and his release clause remains set at €100m (£86m). However, Barcelona now value him at €20m (£17m), an attractive figure despite his struggles under Hansi Flick of late.  Barcelona hoping for imminent sale The report adds that Barcelona’s sporting director Deco intends to finalise Casado’s sale before 30 June to balance their books. Mendes will allegedly travel to Barcelona in the coming days to wrap up Ansu Fati’s transfer to AS Monaco from Barca. During this trip, he could also discuss Casado‘s future. Meanwhile, Barcelona had until 15 June to trigger the buy-option of £26m to turn Marcus Rashford‘s loan deal into a permanent transfer. The deadline has passed. Now, Rashford is understood to have a “£40 million clause available to all admirers”, except for Liverpool and Manchester City.  Featured image Pedro Salado via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Manchester United midfielder Casemiro’s expected route to Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami has reportedly hit a curious stumbling block. United stint At the start of the year, Casemiro announced that he will leave United at the end of the season, following the expiry of his contract. United had the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months but opted against exercising it, presumably to offload his massive wages from the books. The Brazilian joined United in the summer of 2022 from Real Madrid in a deal worth around £70m. He enjoyed a fairytale maiden season in England, helping the club to a third-place finish. He also scored in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle as United lifted the trophy. He was also part of the winning team that won the FA Cup in the subsequent season. In 2025/26, Casemiro contributed a career-high nine goals and an additional two assists in 34 Premier League appearances. His last game for the Red Devils was an emotional one, a 3-2 triumph over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. The five-time Champions League winner was afforded a standing ovation by fans as he departed the pitch. In addition, he received a commemorative honour acknowledging his significant role and dedicated service throughout the past four years. Casemiro is widely expected to join Inter Miami, which is co-owned by United legend David Beckham. According to the Daily Mail, an agreement is in place between the player’s camp and Inter Miami. However, one final hurdle must be overcome for the transfer to get over the line. Final obstacle The Daily Mail reports that LA Galaxy are demanding £750,000 for their discovery rights for the midfielder. It’s said that LA Galaxy was the first club to officially register their interest in the 34-year-old, having held talks earlier in the season. But Casemiro eventually opted to move to Inter Miami after he and his family visited the side. Under MLS discovery rules, Galaxy had priority in talks with Casemiro, keeping other clubs in the league from entering the race for his signature. The discovery list grants clubs the right of first refusal for players who are neither on an MLS roster nor eligible through other designated channels, such as the draft. Every MLS club is allowed up to five players on the discovery list. The Mail note that such disputes are settled by one team compensating the other in a trade for the discovery rights. Pretty amazing moment: United star names surprise career highlight he wants to relive

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo officially announced himself to the world by scoring in the FA Cup final against Manchester City in 2024. The Englishman helped the Red Devils secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over their bitter rivals to register their second trophy under Erik ten Hag. Mainoo was expected to become the backbone of the Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford, but things changed quickly the following season. Ten Hag lost his job, and his successor, Ruben Amorim, attempted to implement a 3-4-3 system that had no space for the 21 year old. From being indispensable under the previous regime, Mainoo turned into a peripheral figure under the Portuguese head coach, and was heavily linked with an exit by the end of last year. However, there was another twist, as Amorim lost his job, and Michael Carrick’s arrival handed Kobbie the opportunity he deserved. Mainoo’s rise under Carrick Carrick’s arrival also saw United shift to a 4-2-3-1 system, where Mainoo was placed at the base of the midfield alongside Casemiro, while Bruno Fernandes operated in a No. 10 role. The move turned out to be a brainwave and handed the Red Devils a new lease of life. United transformed into the Premier League’s most in-form team, registering 12 wins and three draws in 17 games under Carrick. Central to their rise was an outstanding Mainoo, who started 16 games, missing the defeat to Leeds United with an injury. The Red Devils subsequently finished the campaign third in the league table and have secured qualification for the Champions League. Mainoo, meanwhile, earned a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is now preparing to face Croatia at the Dallas Stadium on Wednesday, 17 June. Mainoo wants to relive United’s FA Cup win over City Mainoo was recently asked by the club’s media to name the moment in his career he would like to relive. The Englishman chose the aftermath of the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester City. He said: “When the whistle blew in the FA Cup final. That was a pretty amazing moment. That last 20 minutes was tough because they brought it back to 2-1, and the pressure was on a lot. It was just like: survive, survive.” “We watched the clock going down and they were piling the pressure on us. But it was just, survive – every five minutes looking up at the clock thinking, it’s going so slow. When that whistle finally went I was just knackered and dropping to my knees. Yeah, that’s the one moment I’d say I’d relive.” When asked why he had opted for that moment and not his goal, he said: “A goal’s good, but you score and then it’s like (clicks fingers): right, back to the game. Because you’re playing against City, you know how dangerous they are, they can flip a game like that.” “So the goal’s like, okay, we’ve got some breathing room, let’s go back to work. Obviously it’s an unbelievable moment, scoring in the FA Cup final – but in the moment you can’t really be, like: ‘My god, I’ve just scored in an FA Cup final!’ It’s just: ‘Right, two-nil up now, let’s keep it going.’” “So it’s a lot more of a ‘phew, okay, more breathing room, let’s go again’ than ‘oh my god’. Whereas at the end of the game it’s over. You can feel everything then.” Final Thoughts While United are preparing to upgrade their midfield this summer, Mainoo is expected to keep his place in Michael Carrick’s starting XI. The young Englishman has all the attributes to become an Old Trafford legend and fans will hope he can help bring the glory days back next season. Former United assistant suffers fresh setback after brutal sacking from European giants report

Manchester United’s search for a head coach who can bring the glory days back to Old Trafford has proved a thankless task over the last decade, with many high-profile names failing to live up to their billing after landing the top job at the Theatre of Dreams. Erik ten Hag is one of those on the list who, despite overall failure in the Premier League, did enjoy some level of success in Manchester, winning both domestic cup competitions and overseeing some memorable European nights during his tenure. However, after a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign, Ten Hag was relieved of his duties, leaving behind some of his coaching staff, including René Hake, who was serving as an assistant to the Dutchman. Hake eventually left the club shortly after Ten Hag as part of the overhaul that saw Ruben Amorim take over and bring his own team of trusted backroom staff. Struggles continue for Dutch coach In 2025, Hake went on to join former United player Robin van Persie at Feyenoord, with the duo hoping to restore the famous club to the top of the Eredivisie. However, things have not gone to plan once more, with Van Persie recently losing his job and Hake following him out the door almost immediately. Feyenoord released a statement confirming the departure of Hake and Van Persie’s other assistant Brian Pinas, after finishing 19 points adrift of runaway champions PSV Eindhoven. The comments were straight to the point from the Dutch club, which has entrusted Giovanni van Bronckhorst with the reins as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. “Feyenoord has parted ways with René Hake and Brian Pinas. The duo were part of the coaching staff of Feyenoord’s first team last season, but will leave the club as well, following the departure of head coach Robin van Persie,” the statement read. United still finding the formula Since Hake left Manchester, Amorim’s time at the club was cut short after just 14 months in charge, with United still struggling to find the right man to restore the halcyon days enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson. Michael Carrick is the latest man tasked with doing just that after a fine spell in interim charge earned him the role of head coach on a permanent basis. Supporters at Old Trafford will be desperate for Carrick to replicate his and the team’s performance in the second half of the campaign that saw them pick up as many points as anyone after the former midfielder took charge. A busy summer lies ahead as INEOS attempt to arm Carrick with the tools to compete on all fronts next year, with Champions League football returning to the Theatre of Dreams as well as expectations to improve dramatically on their disastrous domestic cup showings and repeat the impressive league finish. Manchester United are treading carefully in their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Last week, Sky Sports claimed United are preparing an opening offer for Fernandes. However, as things stand, the Red Devils are yet to formally submit their proposal. At this point, the most obvious and biggest hurdle seems to be West Ham’s sky-high valuation of their player, despite their well-documented financial struggles following relegation to the Championship. West Ham believe Mateus Fernandes is ideally a £100m player Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano tried to give a clearer picture of the game of chess between Manchester United and West Ham United. The journalist claims United are in “direct contact” with Mateus Fernandes‘ camp, with the player “very keen” on moving to Old Trafford. Discussions over personal terms are thought to be progressing well. West Ham signed the 21-year-old Portuguese playmaker from Southampton last summer for just under £40m.  Now, Romano suggests that West Ham ideally wanted £100m for Fernandes but “the expectation is that they could close the deal around £85m, not less than this,” he adds. It is understood United are now negotiating to pay less than that figure and are “not in a rush”. However, more clubs are thought to be interested in Fernandes, so the Red Devils might be forced to accelerate their efforts to avoid a late hijack.  Manchester United confident of striking agreement Meanwhile, according to Theatre of Red’s Shaun Connolly, Manchester United remain “confident of a deal” for Fernandes. However, INEOS “will not allow the selling party to dictate the matter”.  “He is keen on a move to Old Trafford, and staff are excited to add him to the squad. Patience is required,” Connolly insists.  Mateus Fernandes Premier League stats: 2025/26 Season Appearances36 Minutes per game84 Touches58.9 Key passes1.0 Accurate passes37.9 Interceptions 1.0 Tackles 2.9 Goals and assists 7 Source: Sofascore West Ham’s apparent tough negotiating stance is interesting given that in February of this year, they themselves announced that they would need to sell players in the summer even if they avoided relegation from the Premier League, after recording a £104.2m loss for the last financial year. As long as the figures at United are composed and there is no bidding war, Fernandes should move to Manchester for a much more reasonable fee than what is being quoted in east London.
