His agent pitched him to Arsenal in January, but Newcastle refused to sanction the exit, given the lack of time to find a replacement. In addition to United, Manchester City and Tottenham have also been mentioned to be admirers of Tonali. It’s believed that City’s interest in Tonali is completely separate to their pursuit of Anderson. A return to Italy for Tonali has also been mooted. “Almost all done”: 26-yo midfield maestro confirms his United transfer is on brink of completion
Atalanta star Ederson has provided a huge update on his move to Manchester United. Agreement struck Earlier this month, a report covered by The Peoples Person confirmed that United had reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson for an initial €40.5m (£35m). Heading into the summer window, United’s top priority was bolstering the midfield and they have made a real statement of intent by quickly wrapping up a deal for Ederson, whose Atalanta contract expires in 2027. Ederson was identified by Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox to replace Casemiro, whose time at Old Trafford has come to an end after the expiry of his contract. United also have an agreement in place with Ederson over personal terms. The deal could eventually be worth up to €45m (£38.8m). It was expected that he would officially complete his move in early July but he received a shock late call-up to Brazil’s national team for the World Cup after Flamengo’s Wesley suffered an injury. Ederson featured for the last nine minutes of Brazil’s 3-0 triumph over Haiti after he replaced Bruno Guimaraes. Matheus Cunha’s brace and a Vinicius Jr strike secured the three points for Brazil. Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Ederson told the news outlet that his switch to Old Trafford is all but done. Ederson’s update The 26-year-old said, “Now I just have to wait and then we’ll see.” He continued, “It’s almost all done, but now I’m here and I have to enjoy this moment to the fullest.” At this stage, only Ederson’s medical examination and the completion of final documentation remain outstanding. Upon their conclusion, an official announcement will confirm him as the first recruit of the Carrick era. United are also working to agree a deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Bolstering the Backline Despite Michael Carrick boasting five senior centre-backs in his squad, INEOS are continuing to scour the market for options to bolster the backline, even though the focus remains on midfield. Initially, it was believed the decision to extend Harry Maguire’s contract had eased the pressure to sign a central defender this summer. As a result, younger options to provide a successor to the 33-year-old Englishman were being targeted, such as Tromso speedster Sedi Kinteh or Tottenham Hotspur colossus Luka Vuskovic. However, more experienced centre-backs have come back under consideration in recent weeks, with the continued injury concerns of Matthijs de Ligt, who has not played since November due to a long-term back issue, and Lisandro Martinez‘s continued fragility likely driving this pivot. A bombshell raid for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero was reported by an Argentine journalist earlier this month, while a more affordable deal for Borussia Dortmund stalwart Waldemar Anton was also being explored. However, Bundesliga expert Christian Falk claims Serie A side Juventus are the frontrunners to sign Min-jae, even though he is an option for United. “Min-jae Kim is on the list at Manchester United. However, I heard that a deal is hotter with Juventus in Italy,” Falk states. “That said, it’s not certain that the South Korea international will even leave Bayern Munich, as he’s enjoying his role at the club. Let’s see what happens with Juventus; then perhaps talks will open with United if things don’t work out with the Serie A outfit.” If Bayern are demanding up to £34.5m for a player who turns 30 in November, INEOS will almost certainly turn their attention elsewhere, regardless of the concerns regarding the existing cohort of centre-backs at Old Trafford.
