Match-going Man Utd supporters stand up amid influencer noise with Ruben Amorim given sneak peek

Manchester United‘s Under-21s were in action on Tuesday night at the John Smith’s Stadium, where they were beaten comfortably by Huddersfield Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. It was quite literally men against boys in Town’s 4-1 triumph, but what should illicit most United pride is the vocal away crowd that turned out to support their next generation.

Almost 600 fans made the short trip over from Manchester, singing loud and proud all night, enjoying friendly song exchanges with the youthful Town support to the left of the away end.

United have long packed out allocations across the country and Europe, and though the away stand wasn’t quite full on Tuesday night, those that made the journey deserve some credit.

For many, it was an opportunity to get their weekly football fix with the senior team out of action at the weekend due to the international break. For those much younger, an opportunity to know what it feels like to travel and support their team where tickets are far easier, and cheaper, to buy in comparison to senior games.

It may come as a surprise to many, but United fans travelling to support the youngsters is nothing new. They did just that earlier this season in the same competition when the Under-21s played away at Barnsley. Don’t forget, Old Trafford was filled with 67,000 fans in 2022 when the Under-18s were crowned FA Youth Cup winners after beating Nottingham Forest.

On that particular day, the United faithful saw a glimpse of their future, with two young lads called Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo both standing out on the night. Fast-forward two years and they guided the senior team to FA Cup success, both netting at Wembley in May.

The club’s Carrington academy base has long been a talent factory for the youth; the carousel has churned out stars like Marcus Rashford in recent years. And if Gary Neville didn’t mention it enough, the Class of ’92 also came through the same system.

Habeeb Ogunneye, Jayce Fitzgerald and Harry Amass, all of whom were involved against Huddersfield, have enjoyed some degree of involvement with the first team in the last 12 months.

On the final whistle, the defeated youngsters trudged over to applaud those that came out to support them. There’s no guarantee, but those who go on to enjoy a career at United will quickly learn that the away support will always do exactly what it says on the tin: support.

The era of social media has given a platform to YouTubers and influencers who find it easy to hurl abuse at players and spark narratives which are backed by their thousands of followers. Garnacho faced exactly that scenario ahead of last week’s clash against PAOK in the Europa League when a fan was heard giving the Argentina international advice on what he should be doing on the pitch, all while streaming his footage.

Garnacho was then visibly subdued in his celebration of a goal against Leicester, with captain Bruno Fernandes later revealing that the 20-year-old felt he had lost the support of some of the fans.

This came despite the Old Trafford crowd being vocal in their efforts to get behind the winger, who has adopted club legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Viva Ronaldo’ song. The 593 at Huddersfield could be heard singing ‘Viva Garnacho’ on Tuesday night too. A youngster who joined from Spain during the Covid lockdown will have learned a lot about United’s real fanbase this week.

United are now onto their sixth permanent manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in Ruben Amorim. All five of his predecessors would probably be in agreement that the only thing they received from match-goers was support.

The culture around United’s fanbase is stark compared to other clubs. Booing performances at half-time and full-time has slowly crept into Old Trafford in recent years, but managers have been supported until their final day.

Jose Mourinho, a man who destroyed any semblance of dressing-room harmony, was supported until the very end. The Portuguese manager’s name was even sung at Old Trafford when he returned to the ground at a later date while on punditry duty with Sky Sports. Everybody had their own opinion on the recently sacked Erik ten Hag, but he too was backed by the fans until his final day.

If the incoming Amorim wants to know what to expect from match-going United fans, he would only have to watch the highlights of the Under 21s clash and note something other than the return of Tyrell Malacia.

United receive setback to winter plans as move for former PL star “ruled out” until at least the summer – report

      united-receive-setback-to-winter-plans-as-move-for-former-pl-star-“ruled-out”-until-at-least-the-summer-–-report

Bayern Munich have reportedly ruled out any chances of Manchester United or another side making a move for Leroy Sane this January window.

With incoming manager Ruben Amorim desperate to make a strong start to life at Old Trafford, United will be expected by many to dip into the January transfer window, despite being limited by a lack of funds.

One area that the Red Devils will be looking to strengthen is out wide where Antony has once again failed to produce the goods and Marcus Rashford looks far from the player he was in spite of an improved performance this season.

For this reason, United have been linked with making a move for Bayern Munich and former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane and have reportedly made an enquiry for the attacker.

He has played 11 matches in all competitions this term, scoring three goals in those games.

However, it seems like any move for the German will have to wait until the summer if it is to take place.

Sky Deutschland report that “a winter transfer can be ruled out at the moment” despite the fact that “Manchester United is monitoring his situation very closely”.

Reportedly, both Sane and Bayern are keen to strike a new deal and are optimistic about the possibility but in spite of this, there are no signs that an agreement is anywhere close to happening.

Consequently, “The pressure on Bayern is increasing as time goes on, after all, a free transfer is looming in the summer.”

The crux of the issue is that “sports director Max Eberl has the goal of reducing the salary level of the current squad next summer” and Sane is certainly one of the players, alongside Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer, who will be asked to reduce their wages when they sign a new deal.

While a winter move does seem off the table for now, Sane would be free to discuss a contract with any foreign club from January onwards, so it is certainly a situation to watch if the German continues to stall on signing a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

The rumours of interest in the winger also predate Amorim’s arrival, so it will be interesting to see if the attacker is seen as a viable option to fit into the coach’s high intensity 3-4-3 formation that employs wingbacks rather than traditional wingers.

1 big chance missed, 3 passes: United FA Youth Cup winner continues to struggle during loan spell

        1-big-chance-missed,-3-passes:-united-fa-youth-cup-winner-continues-to-struggle-during-loan-spell

Manchester United striker Joe Hugill’s complicated loan to Wigan Athletic continued with another quiet performance as his team beat Nottingham Forest U21s on penalties in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

The game ended 0-0 before the Latics came out on top 3-0 on penalties.

The English striker adapted to life quickly at The Brick Community Stadium, scoring three goals early on in the season.

Since the end of September though, he has had to contend with injuries and has had limited opportunities to impress.

In fact, his 58 minutes on Tuesday night was the most onfield action he has seen since facing Lincoln away on the 21st of September.

The 21-year-old was given a rating of 6.6 by Sofascore as he struggled to get involved with his teammates failing to produce many clear-cut chances for him.

He did have one shot on target which counted as a big chance missed, and he really should have given his side the lead in the first half.

After a slip from the Forest defender, Hugill showed good anticipation to race in behind the defence but when facing the keeper one-on-one, he tamely fired the ball past the onrushing shot-stopper, but it was easily cleared by the desperate defenders chasing back.

The finish lacked conviction and it was clear to see that the United striker is a man who is struggling for confidence and match rhythm due to the stop-start nature of his recent career at Wigan.

Hugill only had 14 touches of the ball and completed just three out of his six passes for a passing accuracy of 50%.

He was competitive in his duels though, winning four out of seven ground duels and two out of his four aerial battles.

Hugill also helped out defensively, making three tackles and completing one clearance in the match.

He also picked up a yellow card and was subbed off after 58 minutes of play.

It was a poor showing from the United man but he will certainly be happy to get a start and more time on the pitch in what has been a challenging loan spell.

Hugill will hope to get another start after the international break when his side travel to Barnsley on Saturday, November 23.

Sixth new face to join Amorim’s coaching revolution at Carrington – report

          sixth-new-face-to-join-amorim’s-coaching-revolution-at-carrington-–-report

Manchester United are all set to add another new face to their coaching team, Eduardo Rosalino, from Sporting Lisbon.

The departure of Erik ten Hag in late October has set off a series of changes to the coaching team at United.

The summer saw the arrival of the likes of club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rene Hake and goalkeeping coach, Jelle ten Rouwelaar.

Nonetheless, with the announcement of Ruben Amorim as the new head coach, he has decided to clean house and bring in his own men to bring United back from the precipice.

A multitude of different coaches have been introduced to Carrington this week with former Sporting staff — Emanuel Ferro, Adélio Cândido, Carlos Fernandes, Jorge Vital and Paulo Barreira have all joined United’s staff.

Clearly Amorim has decided to opt for people who he has complete trust in as he embarks on arguably the biggest challenge of his coaching career.

Portuguese paper O Jogo report that “Rosalino will also be part of Ruben Amorim’s coaching staff at Manchester United.”

He is a sporting analyst who has been at Sporting since the 2013/2014 season after arriving from the Sporting Algés Academy School.

He worked for one year in the B team before being promoted to the senior side and that is where he has stayed ever since.

Like Amorim, he is only 39-years-old and adds another fresh face to a youthful looking coaching staff at the club.

It is interesting that Amorim has decided to take an axe to the former structure that was only set up in the summer and there was much debate as to what would happen with the highly popular Ruud van Nistelrooy, before it was announced on Monday that he would be departing the club.

While his coaching staff lacks experience and especially a deep understanding of English football, it is also very understandable why Amorim would choose to work with people he has had massive success with his entire career and will have the utmost trust in, as he embarks on this massive chapter in his coaching career.

Video: Cheeky backheel finish from United youngster not enough in EFL Trophy bout

            video:-cheeky-backheel-finish-from-united-youngster-not-enough-in-efl-trophy-bout

Manchester United u21s met Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night in their final EFL Trophy group stage match.

Needing just a point to advance, Travis Binnion’s side faced a tough task. Huddersfield fielded a near-full team, while United had a depleted side to contend with after more than 10 academy players were called up for international duty.

United started brightly, with Sekou Kone shining in the middle of the pitch in the opening 15 minutes with some touches.

But Huddersfield soon took control as the upped the tempo and pinned United back into their half.

Just before the half-hour mark, United was struggling to get upfield. A ball down the left wing saw Victor Musa fail to hold up the play, allowing Huddersfield to counter quickly. Kone was caught on, out of possession, allowing Ben Wiles to pick up the ball 20 yards out and smash a wonder strike into the far top left corner.

United had begun to look shaky in possession, with Kone losing the ball in dangerous areas, which saw him pick up a yellow card before a loose touch enticed a Huddersfield player in for a heavy challenge on his shin that left Kone down and unable to continue in the 41st minute.

Just before the break, though, United levelled the score through Victor Musa. Habeeb Ogunneye started the move by winning possession before wrestling off his marker to feed Ethan Ennis on the right wing, who cheekily nutmegged the fullback before cutting back to Musa in a central area for a clever backheel finish.

Tyrell Malacia came off at half in a pre-planned substitution, with Harry Amass entering for the 25 year old, who looked good on his return from injury.

In the 58th minute, United was lucky to get away with it when the Huddersfield winger cut inside and was caught by Ogunneye’s trailing leg. While going down, the Huddersfield player handled the ball, which the ref called rather than awarding a penalty.

In the 67th minute, Huddersfield attacked down the right and delivered a whipped-in cross into the six-yard box for Rhys Healey to head home, having split between the United centre-halves.

United looked to be dead on their feet in the final stages, having put up a good fight. Still, the strong Huddersfield side ultimately proved too much to contend with and made it 3-0 in the 90th minute through David Kamasu, who hit on the counterattack, with United unable to keep up with the speed of the attack.

To make matters worse, Huddersfield added a fourth deep into injury time from a corner to give United a somewhat harsh score line.

The loss means United have exited the EFL Trophy. Their five points left them one point behind Huddersfield. United is back in action next week in the National League Cup against Altrincham.

United XI: Mee, Ogunneye (Mather 76), Kingdon, Fredricson, Malacia (Amass 46), Kone (McAllister 41), Rowe, Ennis, Fitzgerald (Moorhouse 76), Williams(Missin 65), Musa

Manchester United u21s fell to a strong Huddersfield Town side to be eliminated from the EFL Trophy.

Here are our player ratings for the match. Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 5 – Couldn’t do much for some of the goals but more than conceding the goals, his biggest faults lay with the ball at his feet. Finishing with 44% pass completion sheds light on his poor distribution on the night which saw United under pressure straight from the back.

Habeeb Ogunneye—7—Possibly United’s strongest performer, he was up to the task physically and one of the few who could withstand challenges to maintain possession. This was key in the few times United was able to get up the pitch, including playing an important role before Musa’s goal when he won possession and then outmuscled his opponent to launch the attack. He was also decent defensively, although he may have been lucky not to have conceded a penalty.

Jack Kingdon—6.5—He had a good first half. He defended the box well for the majority of the match before, like the entire United side, falling off a bit towards the end. He struggled a bith, aerially, thoug against experienced forwards.

Tyler Fredricson – 6.5 – Similarly had a good opening hour making eight clearances and four tackles but the pressure was relentless by the end which caught him out of position a couple of times late in the match as he tired.

Tyrell Malacia – 7 – An impressive display on his return from injury and didn’t look like he hadn’t played in 17 months. Was very composed on the ball, which was a rarity on the night in a very sloppy United performance. Also put in a couple of perfectly timed tackles and read the game very well defensively. But did look a bit slow off the mark at times with a lack of explosiveness which can be expected.

Sekou Kone—6—It was a match of night and day for Kone. He started brightly with some very good touches on the ball but lost his way as the tempo of the match increased. A number of sloppy touches saw him cough up possession in dangerous areas, which led to him getting booked. He eventually had to come off in the 42nd minute after taking a heavy knock.

Tommy Rowe – 5.5 – Generally kept it pretty simple in possession and physically got stuck in but just doesn’t have the pace to sweep up attacks in behind and cover teammates which left them susceptible on the counter attack.

Ethan Ennis – 6.5 – Provided the assist for Musa with a clever nutmeg before providing the cutback. As usual, he caused trouble with his dribbling when he got the ball in advanced areas, but those occasions were just too few and far between.

Jayce Fitzgerald – 6 – He played a couple of good passes to switch the play but was generally safe in his passing and didn’t provide enough creative thrust in attacking areas while deployed in the 10 position.

Ethan Williams – 6 – Made a couple of nice passes through the lines in the first half but often found the recipient unable to hold up the ball, leading to attacks fizzling out.

Victor Musa – 6.5 – Took his goal really well with a clever backheel but struggled to hold up the ball in central areas and didn’t provide a focal point in attack, often drifting to wide areas and leaving the box with no United attackers.

              Substitutes

Finley McAllister—7—McAllister displayed a good display off the bench. He often offered a much-needed outlet in midfield and looked one of the few United players capable of receiving and moving the ball under the pressure of Huddersfield. He also won possession four times and drew three fouls to help alleviate pressure at the back.

Harry Amass—5—In a poor display, Amass didn’t show his usual composure in possession and played some sloppy passes, which caused United to struggle to get the ball up field. He was also caught behind defensively a couple of times.

Ashton Missin – 6 – Didn’t really get to attack much but as always put in good effort up and down the wing.

Jack Moorhouse – 6 – Had a few touches through middle to open up space and looked like he could have potentially caused some danger but had limited time.

Sam Mather – 6 – Similarly has limited time in possession but did create a very nice opening down the left wing towards the end of the match.

Man Utd on ‘red alert’ for stunning Chelsea double swoop with ‘unhappy’ star ‘attracted’ by transfer

                man-utd-on-‘red-alert’-for-stunning-chelsea-double-swoop-with-‘unhappy’-star-‘attracted’-by-transfer

Manchester United are reportedly on ‘red alert’ as they are considering a shock double swoop to sign two players from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover at the start of this year, Man Utd were busy in the summer as they spent around £185m on new signings. They recruited Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.

Despite this, the Red Devils made a terrible start to the 2024/25 campaign and former boss Erik ten Hag was sacked last month.

Ratcliffe and his recruitment team acted quickly and decisively to acquire his replacement and they appointed Ruben Amorim, who has left Sporting Lisbon to take over at Old Trafford.

Amorim has a big job at Man Utd and he could push the board to make signings in January. The Premier League giants are already being linked with several potential targets and a surprise raid on Chelsea has been mooted.

Earlier this week, a report claimed Christopher Nkunku is ‘unhappy’ at Chelsea and Man Utd were making a move to make him Amorim’s first signing.

READ: Five PL moves for Ruud van Nistelrooy post-Man Utd include replacing Ange Postecoglou at Spurs

A new report from Football Insider claims Nkunku’s ‘response’ to interest from Man Utd is that he is ‘attracted’ by the possibility of joining Chelsea’s rivals.

Nkunku joined Chelsea for around £52m during the 2023 summer transfer window but missed most of his debut season with a serious knee injury.

This season, the Frenchman has starred in cup competitions but has only started one Premier League game as he’s behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order.

                The report explains.

‘It is believed the France international could take matters into his own hands next year as he is “unhappy” to play a backup role to the club’s other forwards.

‘Nicolas Jackson is the undisputed first-choice striker for Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in the summer.

‘Sources say Nkunku would be attracted to a potential Old Trafford move should the opportunity arise, with the player keen to play regular first-team football.’

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has also been on the periphery following his move to Chelsea. A report from journalist Mark Brus claims they are ‘already open’ to letting him leave and Man Utd are on ‘red alert’.

‘Chelsea could be open to allowing one of their major summer signings to leave the club already as we edge closer to the January transfer window, sources have told the Daily Briefing…

‘Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has had a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge and it’s understood that Chelsea could already consider letting the 26-year-old move on, most likely on loan.

‘Although Dewsbury-Hall was a key player for Enzo Maresca when they were together at Leicester City last season, it’s proven difficult for the former Foxes playmaker to secure regular playing time for Chelsea.

‘The Blues have plenty of competition for places in their midfield, and Dewsbury-Hall could now do well to look at other options if he is to revive his career.

‘The Daily Briefing have been told that Manchester United and Tottenham are among the Englishman’s most high-profile suitors ahead of January, though it remains to be seen if Chelsea will allow him to join a big six rival.

‘Alongside those clubs, it is also understood that others in the Premier League such as Newcastle, Aston Villa, Fulham, Brighton and Brentford could also be ready to rescue Dewsbury-Hall from his difficult situation at Chelsea.’

Ten Hag set to lose out on major European job to surprise veteran – report

                  ten-hag-set-to-lose-out-on-major-european-job-to-surprise-veteran-–-report

AS Roma may bypass Erik ten Hag in their search for a new manager, with the club strongly considering a return for seasoned Italian manager Claudio Ranieri.

The Serie A club urgently seeks stability after a tumultuous season that has already seen the dismissal of two managers, Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric.

Roma currently sits 12th in the Serie A standings, having secured only three wins from 12 league matches, and hopes are high that an experienced hand like Ranieri could steady the ship.

Ranieri celebrated his 2016 Premier League title win with Leicester City and retired from club management last season after a stint with Cagliari, where he declared it would be his previous role.

However, Italian sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Ranieri could be persuaded to make a surprising comeback, given Roma’s dire need for an experienced figure to guide the team through its challenges.

The 73-year-old reportedly travelled to London for discussions with Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin, and a decision is anticipated by Wednesday.

If appointed, this would mark Ranieri’s third tenure at Roma, following his previous spells from 2009 to 2011 and briefly in 2019.

Despite rumours linking Ten Hag to the job following his recent exit from United, Roma appears focused on Ranieri due to his familiarity with the club and the Italian league.

Ten Hag, dismissed by Man United after a rocky start to the season, was spotted over the weekend at his former club, Ajax. This has fuelled speculation that he may consider returning to Dutch football.

In his brief absence, United appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager and then confirmed Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as their permanent replacement.

Manchester United have had high hopes for their young centre-back Leny Yoro since he arrived at the club in the summer from Lille.

United fended off interest from Real Madrid to seal the signing of one of Europe’s hottest prospects, though for United fans, they have had to be patient in seeing their new man play for the club.

Yoro started matches against Rangers and Arsenal in pre season, but he had to come off in the latter after suffering an ankle injury.

The setback meant Yoro didn’t actually play under Erik ten Hag in a competitive game, the man who signed him, with the Dutch boss losing his job last month.

Ten Hag’s successor Ruben Amorim arrived at Carrington earlier this week, with the former Sporting Lisbon coach pictured with Yoro.

According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, Amorim and his staff view Yoro as one of the most interesting players to develop as United aim to build a long term project.

The Italian journalist also revealed United consider the 19-year-old a generational talent, with Amorim in agreement on that.

Yoro’s full recovery is said to be at the final stages, with the wait almost over for the French teenager to show out at Old Trafford.

Yoro played 60 games for his boyhood club Lille, though was sought after among clubs across Europe from his earliest stages. Many within the game have compared him to former United and France defender Raphael Varane, due to his figure, profile, nationality and the age in which he made his big move.

Varane was also just 18-years-old when he switched RC Lens for Real Madrid. Madrid pipped United to Varane’s signature, though the Reds were sure to land their man this time round after seemingly realising they secured the services of Varane after he had passed his best.

It will be interesting to see how United line up under new boss Amorim, who has adopted a three at the back system ever since his early days in career as Casa Pia boss.

Should that be the case at United, Yoro would be expected to play as the right centre-back, alongside fellow summer signing Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, who could be deemed as a natural fit for the left-sided position.

Martinez excels on the ball, while having also covered at left-back this season with United still without a recognised full-back on that side.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are close to returning to full fitness, with the latter having featured for the Under 21’s against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

Kobbie Mainoo has taken the world by storm since making his first Premier League start against Everton at Goodison Park last year.

Since living up to the hype in his first year in the game, Mainoo ended last season having played and won the FA Cup final with Manchester United, as well as playing a key part in England’s second placed finish at the Euro’s in Germany.

While in camp, Mainoo struck up a good partnership with fellow Mancunian, Cole Palmer, with the pair becoming quite competitive in their time away from the pitch.

Speaking to British GQ, Palmer claimed: “I’m better at table tennis, he’s better at padel,” to which Mainoo replied: “You don’t believe that. Table tennis!?”

Padel became quite popular at England’s Blankenheim base in Germany, with Phil Foden and Adam Wharton also getting involved with the duo.

On the pitch, Mainoo offers something different to his compatriots, with qualities we haven’t often seen in English midfielders in years gone by.

“I like to watch Busquets, the way he used to turn. Players like Seedorf, Modric. Players like Yaya Toure – I like the way he used to play,” he said.

Mainoo’s most impressive attribute is his press resistance and ability to keep hold of the ball. He rarely makes the wrong decisions in possession.

He is seen as someone who plays quite off the cuff. He said: “I don’t think about it too much. It’s more an in-the-moment type of thing. Like if I check, I see a guy here, then I’ll turn this way. Or if I don’t have to do that, I can just bounce out. I don’t think, like, I’m gonna turn here… it’s more that if the defender gives me an option, then I’m gonna take it.”

United have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with youth players, with 250 academy graduates debuting for the first team dating back to 1937. Ever since October that year, United have had an academy graduate in the match day squad.

Mainoo believes United’s insistence on youth is what gave him his opportunity.

He said: “I feel like at United it’s very much in the history that they play young players, going all the way back to the Busby Babes. There’s big writing up on the wall [at Carrington] saying, ‘If they’re good enough, they’re old enough.’”

Mainoo’s biggest career success to date is the FA Cup final where United beat the odds at Wembley in May to beat their cross-town rivals Manchester City.

On the triumph, Mainoo recalls: “I remember just the feeling around it was like, no one expects us to win. They’ve just written us off. I used that as motivation.”

“I won’t say it made the season a success for us as a team, but we definitely needed it. We couldn’t go into the summer with nothing, just finishing where we finished in the table. A trophy brings hope. But it definitely didn’t make the season a success.”

In the end, Mainoo may have been relieved to see Erik ten Hag leave Old Trafford, with the Dutchman’s delusion insisting he had been a major success in his time at the club after winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in successive seasons.
