“The problem is…“: Amorim throws shade at Ten Hag’s methods in telling conversation with Gary Neville

    “the-problem-is…“:-amorim-throws-shade-at-ten-hag’s-methods-in-telling-conversation-with-gary-neville

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has already pinpointed areas in which he thinks the players have a lot of improvement to do.

And that has been evident right from the word go, with the players asked to work on their recovery runs, something that clearly ailed the team during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Players were often seen jogging back instead of bursting a gut and Amorim is clearly trying to work on that aspect. And while immediate results might not be seen, there will certainly be an improvement.

While speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Sports, the Portuguese tactician pointed out the lack of physicality and intensity in the squad which often has not allowed the players to press as high as their manager might want.

    Better fitness

“The first thing I think we have to be is better athletes. That is something that you can acknowledge when you are here and we see the data. When I say fitter it is not thinner or nothing about that. It is the data.

“You have to understand the data to press high. What is the average metres that you have to run. We like to run and to sprint. You have all this data and you have to cope with that. So you already know your goal is to reach that.

“Of course, you play with the ball, if you can run a lot, but if you don’t understand the game, it doesn’t matter. But the first point. To press high you have to be very fit and you have to cope with the demands of pressing high.”

While respecting the former manager, Amorim clearly expressed his frustration with Ten Hag’s chaos ball. Fans were often puzzled to see the team play too vertically at times, as a result of which they hardly kept the ball and always looked to go long while leaving huge gaps in the middle for the opposition to exploit.

Not a fan of EtH’s style

The ex-Sporting Lisbon coach is not a fan. He told the former club legend that he has tried to instill confidence in the players to retain possession and control the tempo so that they can naturally play a higher line as opposed to constant counter-attacks.

“The problem is with the ball. I think we lose the ball too fast. We win the ball, we lose the ball, and you cannot press high all the time, so you have to keep the ball and understand that you have to be in position to start one play.

“This is something that, with the ball, we can press better. So the focus this week also was in that part. If we don’t lose the ball, you can push higher; if you are higher, you can press better. It’s like a snowball, everything is connected.”

Ten Hag’s style ultimately let him down and Amorim’s principles are likely to be on show on Sunday at Portman Road. Now it is up to the players to perform or perish.

Man Utd: ‘Dreamer’ Amorim explains how he is ‘different from Mourinho’ in first press conference

      man-utd:-‘dreamer’-amorim-explains-how-he-is-‘different-from-mourinho’-in-first-press-conference

Ruben Amorim has explained he is “different” from compatriot Jose Mourinho during his first press conference as the new Man Utd boss.

The Red Devils appointed Amorim on November 1 as Erik ten Hag’s successor with the Portuguese coach taking over last week before taking his first training session yesterday.

Amorim has a tough job on his hands with Man Utd currently 13th in the Premier League, after a terrible start to the season, and looking for a manager to finally end their run of over a decade without a league title.

There have been claims that Man Utd will have very little money to spend in the January transfer window as they are close to their financial fair play limits.

When asked in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Devils’ trip to Ipswich Town if it is the impossible job, Amorim replied: “No of course not, I believe that, call me naive, I believe I’m the right guy in the right moment, I’m not worried about that, I truly believe.”

Amorim added on the size of the club: “It’s bigger than what I am used to, bigger than Sporting, but I have a lot of help, I am happy and I feel at home.”

“I am a little bit a dreamer, I believe in myself, I also think the club is the same, we have the same mindset. I believe a lot in these players. We have room to improve. I want to try new things. You might think it’s possible, I think it’s possible, we will see in the end.”

Mourinho won a League Cup and Europa League double during his time as Man Utd boss in his two years as manager but left a reportedly unhappy dressing room.

When asked about Mourinho’s influence on him, Amorim replied: “First thing, for me and all the Portuguese coaches, he showed that we can be best in the world.

“For a small country, it can put a stamp on everybody. But I am different from Mourinho, I am a different person.

“At that time, it felt like he could win everywhere. It is not the same thing. He was a European champion. I am not a European champion.

“I am a different guy in a different moment, football is in a different moment. Football nowadays is different.

“I am the right guy for this moment. I am a young guy and I undestand the players. I will use that to help my players, like Mourinho did with Chelsea.

“The young guys were like Lampard and these type of players. It is so different. I think I am the right guy for this moment.”

On contact with Mourinho, Amorim continued: “He sent me a message. He said it is a big club, with lovely people. It still is. That is correct. A lot of things have changed. We are in a different building now and building a new one.

“I am a different guy. I was learning and I hope to teach my players a few things. This is still the best club in England and we want to win.”

United “have contacted” Real Madrid superstar over blockbuster 2025 deal, player is “flattered by the interest” – report

        united-“have-contacted”-real-madrid-superstar-over-blockbuster-2025-deal,-player-is-“flattered-by-the-interest”-–-report

Ever since Ruben Amorim has come in, intensity has been a mantra he has often repeated and Manchester United’s approach in the transfer market is likely to be centred on that.

As a result of his desire for fitter and more athletic players, both Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are likely to be playing their final season in red.

The Portuguese wants a midfielder with a great engine and technicality to be able to understand his system and they are reportedly eyeing a Real Madrid superstar as per Spanish outlet Bernabeu Digital.

Eduardo Camavinga’s entourage has been contacted by intermediaries regarding United’s interest with the Frenchman’s age and profile making him a perfect fit for Amorim’s system.

        Midfield revamp

The 22-year-old, who has started only five games this campaign, is reportedly flattered with the interest and the prospect of regular minutes that the Red Devils can provide.

Camavinga has had to play in defensive midfielder, further forward and even at left-back with the France international hardly ever grasping one role with both hands.

But United could offer him the chance to play in the middle of the park and are eyeing a realistic approach next summer with a January move practically ruled out after INEOS’ recent budgetary decision.

However, the ex-Stade Rennais star has no intention of jumping ship while Los Blancos are also very pleased with the France international’s displays and they have no reason to let go of the versatile ace.

        Camavinga interest

“The ‘red devils’ have contacted an important player in the Real Madrid squad through intermediaries. We at Bernabéu Digital have found that Eduardo Camavinga’s entourage is aware of Manchester United’s interest, either for January (a practically impossible scenario) or for the summer of 2025.

“Although Camavinga is flattered by the interest of one of the most important clubs in the world, his desire is to remain at Real Madrid for many more years.

“Having arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu in the summer of 2021, it is hard to believe that he is not yet an undisputed starter for Carlo Ancelotti, but the club are delighted with the Frenchman.”

The two-time Champions League winner has a market value of €100 million with his contract valid until 2029. And unless Real decide to part ways, the 20-time English league champions will find it hard to acquire Camavinga’s signature.

Man Utd: Amorim tipped to revive ‘exposed’ star ‘let down’ by sacked Ten Hag amid ‘wrong tactics’

          man-utd:-amorim-tipped-to-revive-‘exposed’-star-‘let-down’-by-sacked-ten-hag-amid-‘wrong-tactics’

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has been tipped to revive one star who was “let down” by former boss Erik ten Hag.

Earlier this month, Man Utd appointed Amorim to replace Ten Hag, who was sacked following their disappointing loss at West Ham at the end of October.

Amorim did a brilliant job at Sporting Lisbon as he helped them win the Primeira Liga twice and made a perfect start in the league this season, winning their opening eleven league games.

The 39-year-old has a difficult challenge at Man Utd, though. The Red Devils have endured a miserable start to the 2024/25 campaign as they are 13th in the Premier League.

United have carried on from where they let off last season in the Premier League as they have been held back by poor recruitment in recent years.

Casemiro was one of the worst signings made by Man Utd during the Ten Hag-era as they foolishly invested £60m plus add-ons to sign the 32-year-old from Real Madrid.

The Brazil international surpassed expectations during his debut season in 2022/23, but his form has declined over the past 18 months.

Casemiro has been heavily criticised but his form did improve slightly under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. Ex-United striker Louis Saha has backed Amorim to get the best out of the centre-midfielder after he was “let down” by Ten Hag.

“You could see how much he was being exposed in Erik ten Hag’s system and ultimately, the tactics were wrong,” Saha said.

READ: Big Weekend: Man City v Tottenham, Ruben Amorim, Liverpool, Cole Palmer, Napoli, Coventry

“Casemiro was being asked to do too much and it’s difficult for him to do well without the right players around him. It doesn’t matter how many trophies he’s won, he was going to struggle in that system.

“I believe he was let down. I’m a big defender of him because he never complains and he’s aware of when he’s not playing well.

“With the right balance in the midfield and the right positioning, we’re going to see Casemiro playing with a different dimension. He has the right quality and leadership that this Manchester United team needs.”

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Amorim insisted he is the “right guy at the right time” for Man Utd and he “believes in the players”.

“I’m a little bit of a dreamer and I believe in myself and I believe in the club,” Amorim said.

“I think we have the same idea, the same mindset and that can help.

“I truly believe in the players, I know you don’t believe a lot but I do. I want to try new things. You guys don’t think it’s possible, I do.

“Call me naive, but I believe I am the right guy at the right time. I truly believe I am the right guy.”

He added: “I know at Manchester United we have to win games. We need a lot of time because it’s a tough league, we have to improve a lot to try to win the title.

“We have to change the physical aspect of the team. I don’t know how long it will take.”

Amorim names three things Man Utd ‘have to be better’ at; reveals he will have big say on transfers

            amorim-names-three-things-man-utd-‘have-to-be-better’-at;-reveals-he-will-have-big-say-on-transfers

Ruben Amorim has told his first pre-match press conference as Man Utd manager that he is looking to improve their defending as a priority.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag at the end of October after the Dutchman could only guide them to three wins in their first nine Premier League matches of the season.

Despite securing another four points in two games under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, new head coach Amorim will start with Man Utd 13th place in the Premier League.

Amorim was officially announced on November 1 but he could not start until last week after taking charge of his final match as Sporting Lisbon boss in a 4-2 win over Braga.

Speculation is already rife about who INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe could look to buy in order to support Amorim in the January transfer window with numerous names mooted as potential additions.

And Amorim insists he will have a big say in who Man Utd recruit going forward with the Portuguese coach needing players to fit his system.

Amorim told reporters on Friday: “It has to be altogether. If you are a coach that came in here and already chose the players, you could be wrong because this is a football club for a long time and you as a coach do not know that.

“We have to work everybody together, and to do that we have to improve the process of recruitment. The data and the profile of the players we want.

“I have to have a strong position on that because I am the coach and I know how to play. It is altogether, but the final word should be the manager, not just because it is your right but because it is your responsibility, because in the end they will ask you the results.

“Altogether we must improve the process of recruitment. I have to understand the league. When everything is aligned and everyone is on the same page we can buy and sell players.

“It is not the final say, but I have a great responsibility when we choose players. That is because it is something that should be done in this way. I am the head coach so I have to choose the players.”

On “small things” he’s looking to improve at Man Utd immediately, Amorim added: “If you want to speak about the team we lose the ball too often and have to keep the ball better. We have to be better on running back I think that’s clear for everyone.

“And we have to be better in the defence, people talk about changing big things but I think changing the small things, in the small things I think we can make a difference.”

On his coaching style, Amorim continued: “As a coach you have to choose one way or another, I choose always 100 per cent our way. I choose to risk a bit.

“If I believe so much in our way of playing, they will believe too. There is no second way. We will adapt some players because we don’t have a different profile.

“Maybe on Sunday you will see the starting 11 and not feel a lot of change but you will see it in the game and the positioning or where they receive the ball.”

Man Utd: Carragher reveals what he and Neville really thought of Ten Hag in person

              man-utd:-carragher-reveals-what-he-and-neville-really-thought-of-ten-hag-in-person

Jamie Carragher admits he thought former Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag lacked “charisma” after interviewing him with Gary Neville early on his reign.

The Dutchman had a promising first season in charge at Old Trafford with Ten Hag leading the Red Devils to an FA Cup final, League Cup glory and a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Despite a shock FA Cup final win over arch-rivals Man City last term, Man Utd could only finish eighth in the Premier League and there was an expectation that INEOS would sack Ten Hag.

However, they decided to keep him on and offer him a one-year extension over the summer after speaking with a number of potential replacements.

That proved to be a mistake as they fired Ten Hag just nine matches into the new Premier League season with Man Utd winning just a third of those fixtures.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher admits he and fellow Sky Sports pundit Neville got a feeling that Ten Hag lacked an “X-factor” during an interview after his first two matches as Man Utd boss.

Carragher wrote in his Daily Telegraph column: “The most successful have an aura and personality.

“Only those working in the same environment can offer a first-hand account of how the manager operates behind the scenes, but for those of us on the outside looking in, perceptions matter.

“Without dwelling too much on United’s recent past, this was a red flag against Ten Hag from day one.

“Two games into his reign, Gary Neville and I had the pleasure of interviewing Ten Hag at United’s training ground. He was a polite guy but there was no sense of an x-factor.

“Driving away from the meeting that day, I turned to Gary and said: ‘He must be a supercoach because there isn’t much charisma.’”

Ruben Amorim has now replaced Ten Hag as the Man Utd manager and former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham is pleased with the choice to appoint the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss.

Sheringham said recently: “At the end of the day, we had enough of Ten Hag. I said he should have been gone ages ago. I’m surprised he lasted that long, especially with where he’s got Man United in the league.

“The Premier League is what it’s all about for Man United, for my liking. I know he won the FA Cup with one outstanding performance, but he should have gone in the summer.

“The decision to appoint Ruben Amorim is not before time. It looks like they’ve picked the best man, the right man for the job to come in. They must have thought long and hard about it, about where they were going to go.

“They got an extra two or three months to find the right man after clearly having doubts about Ten Hag in the summer.

“With the decision to bring him in, obviously there’s a few months gone in the season. It’s not the end of the world, that they’ve got a new manager in now. Things change very quickly. Everyone’s saying Man United are miles off of being the top club that they used to be, but if a manager comes in and gets it right, it can all change at Manchester United.”

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United’s first priority is to keep the ball better ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town in East Anglia.

Speaking in his first press conference as head coach of United, the 39 year old said “If you want to speak about the way we play, we lose the ball too often, so we need to keep the ball better.

“We need to be better running back and I think that’s clear for everybody [smiles]. We have to be very good in the small details, we have to improve on that.”

Speaking about his first impressions of the club, he said:

“It’s bigger [than I imagined]. There’s a lot of departments which is different to Sporting. It is a global club with so much to do, not just coaching the team. I have a lot of help and I am very happy and very comfortable. I feel at home.

“I am a dreamer and I believe in myself. I believe in the club and we have the same idea and same mindset.

“I think we have room to improve and I want to try new things.

“We have ideas, it’s not revolution it’s evolution in the way we want to change, we are building a new one. I’m a different guy.”

Pep Guardiola at Man City: A damning indictment of inferiority for each of the Big Six

                  pep-guardiola-at-man-city:-a-damning-indictment-of-inferiority-for-each-of-the-big-six

Pep Guardiola has extended his Manchester City contract and will likely therefore extend the very real inferiority complexes of his so-called ‘rivals’ in the Premier League, who have been roundly embarrassed by his side’s dominance in his eight seasons at the Etihad.

We’ve come up with a damning indictment of inferiority for each of the other five members of the Big Six since Guardiola arrived in the summer of 2016.

Arsenal: One Champions League knockout win
Manchester City haven’t been the Champions League juggernauts that their domestic dominance suggests they should have been during Guardiola’s tenure – it was about the only stick left to beat him with before they eventually got the monkey off their back in 2023.

Their relationship with Europe’s showcase competition hasn’t been a smooth one but they’ve had a relationship to speak of, unlike Arsenal.

The Gunners have only been in it twice during the age of Guardiola in England: in the Spaniard’s first season in the Premier League, when they successfully negotiated a group with PSG, Basel and Ludogrets before losing 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich; and last season, when they squeezed through the first knockout round against Porto on penalties before limping out in the quarter-final, again to Bayern.

Chelsea: 28 fewer points per season
The argument from Chelsea fans and the previous regime to defend their saloon-door manager policy was ‘works though, doesn’t it?’. But Guardiola marks the cut-off point after which it no longer did.

Antonio Conte drove Chelsea to the title in his and Guardiola’s first season in England, but none of the Blues’ eight managerial changes since the Spaniard has arrived have led to a title. Not even a sniff of one in fact, with 19 points the smallest gap between the two sides come season’s end, which they ‘achieved’ in consecutive seasons thanks to a bit of Frank Lampard and a lot more Thomas Tuchel.

In the seven seasons since Chelsea won the title in 2016/2017, when Guardiola was still getting his feet under the table, Manchester City have won 200 more points than Chelsea; that’s an average of over 28 more points per season.

                  Tottenham: 36 knockout victories
No trophies, obviously, but that doesn’t paint a picture anywhere near clear enough of Spurs’ subservience. In the time that Manchester City have won 18 trophies (and yes we’re counting the minor ones because Tottenham sure as sh*t would), Spurs have reached just two finals and won 36 knockout games. Manchester City have won 85.

                  Manchester United: Spent more
The Sheikh sugar daddy argument rather falls down for Manchester United fans when you dig into, or rather brush the surface, of the numbers.

Manchester United have spent £1.32bn on players since Guardiola arrived in the Premier League, compared to Manchester City’s £1.27bn, with the Citizen sales of £694m in that time providing further embarrassment for United, who have recouped just £363m.

United have spent more, have a significantly greater net spend, have watched City win six Premier League titles – usually from quite a distance – and have failed to finish above their rivals in any of Guardiola’s eight seasons in charge.

                  Liverpool: The Great Rivalry
“I will miss him a lot,” Guardiola said when asked about his great rival leaving Liverpool. “Jurgen has been a really important part of my life. He brought me to another level as a manager.”

We don’t doubt that and we can’t dismiss what were undoubtedly some brilliant battles between two great sides under two great managers, who were so far ahead of the chasing pack for a couple of seasons that those clashes took on added importance as genuine title deciders.

It was definitely over-egged at times, with TV broadcasters as much to blame as anyone for huge build-ups to games between the two even when they weren’t going properly toe-to-toe in the Premier League, which only happened twice, in 2018/2019 and 2021/2022.

Arne Slot is currently wondering what all the fuss was about as he and Liverpool trot ahead of Manchester City without any bother, and it would be very funny if he was to cruise to the title in his first season after The Honorary Scouser fought tooth and nail with Guardiola for years and managed to pip him and City just once.

An enjoyable rivalry certainly, but we would argue a Great Rivalry would need to be significantly less one-sided.

Mount joined United for £60m from Chelsea last summer, but his time at Old Trafford has been hampered by a frustrating string of injuries.

The Englishman was handed the iconic number 7 shirt in a show of faith from then-manager Erik ten Hag, but has barely had an opportunity to demonstrate whether he’s up to the challenge.

He has made 26 appearances so far for United, and could be set to make that 27 at the weekend.

Proven in-the-know X account @AmorimEra_, via GiveMeSport, reports that Mount has been the “standout player” in training since the former Sporting Lisbon boss took control.

This has put him squarely in the frame to feature on Sunday in the Portuguese manager’s first match in charge, a trip to Ipswich Town.

Mount has been spotted in training playing as one of two number 10s in a 3-4-3 formation spearheaded by Marcus Rashford at number 9.

Helpfully for Amorim, who has already been tipped to make the 25-year-old a key part of his plans, Mount is used to working in this system; it was the favoured setup for Thomas Tuchel during his reign at Chelsea.

Mount was a key player for the German, picking up 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League in 2021/22, when the Blues finished third.

Amorim isn’t short of options in attacking areas, with captain Bruno Fernandes close to undroppable and Amad Diallo hitting serious form this season.

Both players would be expected to be mainstays of the United attack going forward, so an in-form Mount could cause the new head coach a pleasant problem.

Mount will be desperate to seize any chance to prove his worth at United, with his huge transfer fee and almost non-existent return often cited as another example of the club’s poor recruitment.

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has layered praise onto Alejandro Garnacho, comparing his performances to that of Ryan Giggs.

Speaking to TG Casino via the Mirror, Pallister explained: “Alejandro Garnacho reminds me a little bit of Ryan Giggs when Giggs played on the right – the way he’d come in off the touchline onto his favoured foot and open things up.”

“Garnacho can go both ways and is aggressive when he has the ball, which is a real bonus and a problem for opponents,” Pallister observed. It is for this reason that the former United defender believes that fellow winger Antony has been the subject of widespread criticism.

“I think that’s something that’s been aimed at Antony since he joined Manchester United – he predominantly tries to cut inside and hit that wonder strike into the top corner, but you need to be able to threaten defenders both ways to be effective like Garnacho is. Garnacho is still a work in progress, but he’s a real threat and can score goals,” the four-time Premier League winner explained.

Clearly, Pallister is not the only one who has recognised Garnacho’s impressive talents. The Argentine winger was recently nominated for the Globe Soccer Emerging Player 2024 award.

Garnacho has appeared in all 11 of Man United’s Premier League games so far this season, starting on seven occasions. During this time, he scored three goals and bagged an assist.

He has also impressed in United’s first two Carabao Cup games, scoring three goals and bagging three assists. (Transfermarkt)

Among his shining moments was his crucial goal in the 2-1 win over Brentford, which was nominated for the Premier League Goal of the Month.

By inspecting the underlying figures of Garnacho’s performances, it becomes evident that the 20 year old is lacking in the finishing department. With a steep 3.52 xG, the Argentine has converted just 10% of his goalscoring opportunities.

In total, he has scored from one of his eight shots from outside of the box while converting two of his 23 attempts from inside the box.

His ball carrying has also been poor, with 22% dribbling while winning just 33% of his total dribbles. (Stats via Sofascore)

Still, Pallister warned against being too critical of the youngster.

“People talk about his final ball and decision-making, but that’ll come with time because he’s still a young player. He’s definitely been one of the more positive stories for Manchester United over the past couple of seasons, and the way he goes about his game is a breath of fresh air sometimes,” Pallister explained.

With Antony potentially leaving United sometime in the foreseeable future, Garnacho’s role at United may become increasingly important. For that reason, he will need to improve his finishing should he hope to solidify his place as a starting winger under new manager Ruben Amorim, who he will no doubt be looking to impress.
