New Man Utd boss Amorim ‘makes decision’ on Zirkzee future amid Juventus, Napoli interest

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has decided that he wants Joshua Zirkzee to stay and fight for his place ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils made five signings in the summer transfer window as they looked to give Erik ten Hag their full support after deciding to keep him on over the summer.

Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui all joined before the end of the summer market but they have yet to have the impact the Man Utd hierarchy and fans were hoping.

Ten Hag was sacked after winning just three of the Red Devils’ opening nine Premier League matches with Amorim replacing him last week.

Man Utd are currently 13th in the Premier League after interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy added another four points to their Premier League total before leaving the club earlier this week.

Amorim will play a different formation to Ten Hag at Man Utd and there are concerns that he won’t have the players required to play that system straight away.

And one player who Amorim may not be keen on is Zirkzee with the 23-year-old Netherlands international struggling to adapt to the Premier League.

Zirkzee is failing to impact matches as hoped with one goal and one assist in 11 Premier League appearances this season as Rasmus Hojlund has recently taken his starting place in the team.

There have been reports that Amorim and Man Utd could use Zirkzee as a makeweight in a deal for a new striker, while there has also been speculation that he could go out on loan to Juventus or Napoli.

But Football Insider claim that new Red Devils boss Amorim ‘has given under-pressure striker Joshua Zirkzee a clean slate at Man United after his disappointing start’.

    Football Insider adds:

‘Sources say club chiefs feel the Netherlands international is not the only player who isn’t showcasing their best form at present.

‘United are not blessed with natural strikers and it is believed they will not have the funds to add one to their squad in the January transfer window.’

There have been rumours that Man Utd could sign Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez but the report insists that Amorim is keen to work with Zirkzee.

‘Zirkzee is keen to work with the new Red Devils boss and the feeling is mutual as Amorim attempts to transform their fortunes in the 2024-25 campaign.’

Amorim debuts, Palmer has point to prove and Liverpool could take advantage of CRISIS derby

      amorim-debuts,-palmer-has-point-to-prove-and-liverpool-could-take-advantage-of-crisis-derby

A tantalising clash between a pair of Big Six clubs in CRISIS and the introduction of the latest man charged with the impossible task of getting Manchester United to be Manchester United again. The Premier League returns with the biggest of weekends.

Game to watch: Manchester City v Tottenham
Don’t ask us to explain the science of it, because we can’t, but despite this obviously being the biggest and most watchable game this weekend it nevertheless feels entirely correct that it sits in the 5.30pm Saturday evening slot rather than as a Super Sunday headliner.

Just feels right, doesn’t it? What doesn’t feel right is the frankly sh*te football both these teams were serving up before the international break. Pep Guardiola’s team were doing so badly in their four-game losing run that he’s felt it necessary to sign a new contract, while Spurs continue their apparent quest under Ange Postecoglou to crystallise the very essence of what it is to be Spurs by following up a Carabao win that started City’s own run of woe and a thumping 4-1 win over Aston Villa by losing to Galatasaray in Europe and Ipswich in the league.

The thought of watching two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs tangle when playing well is always quite exciting, but let’s be honest; it’s a lot more fun to watch them play against each other when struggling horribly.

And games between this pair are famously ridiculous anyway. Spurs haven’t always been operating at their current levels of silliness during Guardiola’s golden reign at City, but they’re usually quite silly and have nevertheless emerged as the team perhaps above all others capable of inexplicably giving City the heebie-jeebies in a one-off game. Absurd as it sounds, there is perhaps no team City would less like to be facing when trying to turn around a losing run. Even though for literally every other team in the land Dr Tottenham is precisely who you want to see rolling into town.

The last three Spurs trips to the Etihad have all produced beautiful chaos. Spurs won dramatically 3-2 in 2021/22, Harry Kane capping off one of the great all-round striker performances with a late, late winner after City’s own late equaliser. The following year Spurs went 2-0 up only to lose 4-2, and last season Spurs somehow emerged from what was close to a 90-minute battering with a genuinely absurd 3-3 draw.

The good news for neutrals and Spurs fans hoping for further chaos in a fixture perfectly primed for it is that you don’t have to worry at all about Spurs being in terrible form. They don’t need such fripperies as form or confidence to come here and cause madness. If anything, their current strife increases the potential for nonsense.

That 3-2 win here in 2022 came, absurdly and Spursily, after a run of three straight defeats to Chelsea, Southampton and Wolves and directly before a fourth defeat in five games against Burnley.

Last season’s even dafter 3-3 draw in early December was the only point they managed in a five-game stretch of hilarious collapses that eased the nerves of anyone worrying their 10-game unbeaten start might actually mean anything.

It really does leave us with a fixture where absolutely anything could happen and none of it would surprise. City could absolutely return to form in fine 5-0 style against an injury-ravaged defence that has, frankly, got away with an awful lot so far this season. But Spurs somehow emerging with a high-scoring point or even a win would be massively on-brand for all concerned.

Typical City v Spursy Spurs – we can’t wait, to be honest.

      Manager to watch: Ruben Amorim
To continue the TV scheduling theme, Sky have nailed it, haven’t they? We nodded along at the absolute correctness of placing City v Spurs on Saturday evening where it instinctively sits most correctly, but it did rather leave something of a Super Sunday void.

Ipswich v Manchester United didn’t really look the part at all. What you’ve got there is a lovely Sunday 2pm appetiser, but surely not the main meal. Then along comes Ruben Amorim, and everything is all right.

Manchester United’s charismatic new manager making his grand Premier League entrance in the weekend’s headline slot is absolutely right and correct, and who knows, there may even be just enough time in the build-up to mention any of the players involved in the game. But probably not.

It’s going to be all Amorim, all the time. Whenever Amorim’s not on screen, all the pundits and commentators should be asking ‘Where’s Amorim?’

His arrival feels like a timely one. The established Main Character Managers in the Barclays are having a rough time of it this season, with quieter, more blend-into-the-background sorts like Slot and Nuno and Maresca going well as Guardiola and Arteta and Postecoglou struggle. The Premier League needs Amorim to make a big impression very nearly as much as Manchester United do.

      Team to watch: Liverpool
That early Super Sunday appetiser is instead Southampton v Liverpool, which again sounds just about perfect for a 2pm kick-off. Also has a Saturday lunchtime vibe that Ipswich-United doesn’t for some reason, but Sunday is fine too.

Liverpool will know by the time they return to action just how big an opportunity this weekend’s trip to the Premier League’s bottom club provides. If Spurs have producePad any of their patented Guardiola-scuppering nonsense at the Etihad, then Liverpool could be going into this one looking at the possibility of a seven or even eight-point lead.

Whether they can sustain it all across a whole season under Slot remains to be seen, but there appear to be fewer and fewer reasons to doubt that they have what it takes as the new manager quietly and effectively finesses the rougher edges of Klopp’s football without destroying the whole thing.

      Player to watch: Cole Palmer
To the shock of all, Palmer is available for Chelsea at Leicester despite having been forced out of the beloved November international break by very real and genuine injury. It was, it turned out, quite a bad one for Palmer – and Phil Foden – to miss with their very serious injuries, because England suddenly and belatedly under Lee Carsley got their attacking act together and looked far better for having only one No. 10 on the field instead of all of the No. 10s.

Palmer and Foden are wonderful players, but they are not Jude Bellingham. There will, perhaps, be greater scope for two 10s in a Thomas Tuchel midfield but whatever turns out to be the German’s preferred route, Palmer has seen his international standing suffer slightly. Which is rare; usually missing England games is just about the best thing you can do for your reputation. In Palmer’s defence, who could have predicted England would actually play well against Greece and Ireland? Certainly not a press pack who spent the build up to the game in Athens busy sharpening their knives ready to blame the upcoming defeat on a man who wasn’t even there.

Not Palmer, of course. Tuchel. It was all going to be Tuchel’s fault.

That didn’t pan out, and now Palmer returns to domestic action with perhaps a little bit of a point to prove. Not to Chelsea, who know exactly how good he is and has been for them this season, but everyone else.

Being in the very first game back after the break and it being at Leicester certainly provides the opportunity.

Football League game to watch: Sheffield United v Coventry
As we all try to get to grips with the disconcerting reality that Mark Robins is no longer Coventry manager and that Frank Lampard soon may well be, the managerless Sky Blues themselves must focus instead on an arduous trip to in-form Sheffield United, whose run of four straight wins has taken them level on points with draw-happy Sunderland at the top of the table.

A Saturday lunchtime TV slot gives the Blades the chance to put serious scoreboard pressure on their fellow promotion chasers, while Coventry must surely feel in ‘worse-before-it-gets-better’ territory here going into the weekend – and such a tough fixture – as high as 17th in the table but a single point above the bottom three.

European game to watch: Napoli v Roma
The 2022/23 Serie A champions Napoli endured a miserable 23/24 campaign but are back with a bang under Antonio Conte this year, and return from the international break sitting top of the table and with every chance to power on this weekend against a team currently attempting to show everyone what a miserable campaign truly looks like.

Roma are already on their third manager of the season having sacked club legend Daniele De Rossi, p*ssed off the fans by replacing him with Ivan Juric, and then replacing him two months later with a 73-year-old Claudio Ranieri.

Romelu Lukaku and the lads should be expected to ease to victory in this one, but if Roma need some good news it is right there on the horizon. They’ve got an appointment booked for Thursday with Dr Tottenham. Should sort them right out.

Merson makes ‘catastrophic’ claim as he predicts Man Utd result in Amorim’s first match

        merson-makes-‘catastrophic’-claim-as-he-predicts-man-utd-result-in-amorim’s-first-match

Paul Merson insists that Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge of Man Utd is a “dangerous game” as he warns of a “catastrophic” outcome.

The Red Devils chose to sack Erik ten Hag last month and replace him with Amorim, who left Sporting Lisbon last week and took his first training session on Monday.

Amorim faces a battle to get Man Utd moving in the right direction with the Red Devils currently 13th in the Premier League after just four wins in 11 matches.

Only Southampton, Crystal Palace and Everton have scored fewer goals than Man Utd in the Premier League this season with Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford scoring one goal each in the league.

Ipswich, who Amorim plays in his first match on Sunday, looks like one of the easier matches in the Premier League based on position – but the Tractor Boys have pushed a few good teams close this season and beat Tottenham 2-1 in their last outing before the international break.

And Arsenal legend Merson is expecting a tight encounter but reckons Amorim will come out on top in his first match in charge of Man Utd.

Speaking ahead of the Premier League encounter on Sunday, Merson told Sportskeeda: “It’s a good first game to be in charge if you’re Ruben Amorim, but it’s also a dangerous game and I’ll tell you why.

“Manchester United cannot lose this game, that would be catastrophic. But if they win, people are going to be like, “It’s only Ipswich, of course you had to win”.

“This is certainly a tough game for Manchester United. I’m backing them to win but I don’t think it will be easy. Amorim will want to play three at the back, this is a good game to test that out. Even though I feel United will win against Ipswich, I have a sneaky feeling about this game.

“Marcus Rashford was clearly not the first-choice in attack under Ruud van Nistelrooy. So he has to turn things around under Amorim. If he is unable to do that, I think United have a big problem. Rashford’s wages are going to become an issue if they want to move him on. I don’t know who buys him at the moment. It will be interesting to see how he performs under Amorim, certainly something to keep an eye on. Prediction: Ipswich 1-2 Manchester United.”

“That’s not alien to us”: Kieran McKenna warns he is ready for big surprise Amorim may spring on Sunday

          “that’s-not-alien-to-us”:-kieran-mckenna-warns-he-is-ready-for-big-surprise-amorim-may-spring-on-sunday

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has suggested that he expects his Manchester United counterpart Ruben Amorim to stick with what has made him so successful so far, as the two sides prepare to clash on Sunday.

The match will be Amorim’s first as United gaffer since his appointment as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

Ahead of the clash, anticipation is building, with both the fans and the media eager to see what kind of formation and structure Amorim selects when he names his maiden starting XI.

The game is also important for McKenna, who will be facing a club he supported since childhood and worked at for a number of years in the capacity of an assistant coach.

McKenna departed Old Trafford in 2021 to take over the reins at Ipswich Town, guiding them from League One to the Premier League in a short time.

Earlier on Friday, McKenna spoke to reporters [as quoted by East Anglian Daily Times]  and said about the occasion, “Really excited. Having Man United come to your stadium is always a massive game and with the position that we’re in it is, of course, one of the games that you’re looking forward to most in the season.”

“When Man United are in the situation that they’re in, with the change of manager, it’s always going to be big news on a global scale. It’s about us trying to go out and test ourselves against another very, very good side and a massive club. We’ll try and build on recent performances and pick up another result.”

On how difficult it is to prepare to face a team with a new manager, McKenna answered, “Always when a team changes manager before you play them it creates a different sort of challenge. It’s not the first time I’ve had that as a manager though, of course. Having the two-week international break has probably helped, to be honest, because we’ve had a little bit more preparation time.”

“We’ve watched a lot of the manager’s previous teams and identified the trends that we think are going to be very likely to travel across. It’s a mixture between that and studying the current players at the club, the things that they’ve been doing well and any weaknesses we think we can exploit.”

“We’ve been limited, as they will have been, by having lots of players away on international duty. But 48 hours from kick-off I think we’re in a pretty good place.”

On whether he expects Amorim to immediately deploy his favoured 3-4-3 formation, McKenna remarked, “I’ve said this many times, but I think formations in football get played up a lot, lot more in the media. The manager has been successful with what is maybe a more standardised 3-4-3 at Sporting Lisbon. That’s not alien to us though.”

“In our last home game, Leicester played a 3-2-5 in possession with (Ricardo) Pereira coming into the double pivot. The game before that we played against Brentford, they played a version of 3-2-5 with (Sepp) van den Berg inverting from left-back into a back line of three. In our home game against Aston Villa they were 3-2-5 with Lucas Digne high on the left-hand side.”

“Certainly, in possession especially, there are so many teams now that build-up with a back three, a double pivot and front line of five. Very often (Erik) ten Hag had done similar things as well at United in recent games, so we can still use them as a reference as well. There are certain things that won’t be very unfamiliar. That attacking structure is pretty common across the league. ”

He continued, “The manager will put his own slant and own perspective on that and will be working on certain things on the training ground. Some of those things we can speculate on and some of them we won’t be able to speculate on.”

“Predominantly we have to prepare to put in our best performance and focus on our principles, our structures, our intensity, our spirit. It’s about making sure we stick really clearly to our identity and trust that, especially at home, with maximum intensity, we can give anyone a really difficult game.”

United are currently in 13th position in the Premier League. McKenna refused to confirm whether this is surprising, only stating that the Red Devils still have many talented players and so, competition will be stiff.

McKenna was asked to give his opinion on why so many managers have failed and proven unable to replicate the kind of success Sir Alex Ferguson oversaw in the United dugout.

The 38-year-old said that he has his own opinions on why this has been the case, but he insisted he won’t publicly share these beliefs as a show of respect to United.

Proceedings at Portman Road kick off at 16:30 BST.

Man Utd: Romano reveals reason ‘why’ one star is ‘expected to leave’ after Amorim arrival

            man-utd:-romano-reveals-reason-‘why’-one-star-is-‘expected-to-leave’-after-amorim-arrival

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed “why” one Manchester United star is “expected to leave” following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

39-year-old Amorim has been appointed to replace Erik ten Hag and his first game in charge is at Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss has a big job at Old Trafford as Man Utd are 13th in the Premier League after eleven matches.

There is likely to be an overhaul at Man Utd as Amorim looks to take the Premier League giants to another level. This means several players are at risk of being offloaded at some point next year.

Amad Diallo, Harry Maguire, Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton are in the final year of their contract.

Man Utd have the option to extend Amad and Maguire’s deals on the same terms until 2026, but the other players are perhaps more likely to leave in the summer and Romano “expects” Eriksen to move on.

READ: Manchester United fans *should* be giddy over Amorim – but Liverpool supporter has warning

The transfer guru has revealed “why” the experienced midfielder is “expected to leave” as Amorim’s “vision is different” than Ten Hag’s.

“What I’m also hearing is that there are, as of today, zero contacts between Christian Eriksen, his camp, and Manchester United to sign a new contract in 2025,” Romano said.

“So the expectation is for Christian Eriksen to leave Manchester United on a free transfer in 2025, and could be in the summer transfer window as a free agent. Let’s see what happens in January.

“At the moment, I’m not aware of any contact or negotiation in January. In the summer, we had rumours about Ajax, but now I’m not aware of any fresh contact between Eriksen and any other club. But for 2025 on a free, this is more than a possibility for what I’m hearing.

“Man United want to go in a different direction. May United want intensity in that position, they respect, obviously, Christian Eriksen, who also did quite well in the first part of the season under Erik ten Hag, but the vision of Ruben Amorim is different. This is why Eriksen is expected to leave Manchester United.”

“It was very tough to leave Sporting. Because in the middle of the season, you can say everything, it’s Manchester United. It’s everything, it’s the moment, it’s the club that I want.

Rival PL club plotting ambitious January move for midfield genius who has a “soft spot” for United – report

              rival-pl-club-plotting-ambitious-january-move-for-midfield-genius-who-has-a-“soft-spot”-for-united-–-report

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly contemplating making a January swoop for Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, in a bid to beat Manchester United to his services.

Gomes rose through Manchester United’s academy and made history as the club’s fourth youngest player, debuting in the Premier League against Crystal Palace in May 2017 at just 16 years and 263 days old.

However, he was unable to build on this feat and found playing time hard to come by. Gomes made just 10 first-team appearances for the Red Devils before his departure in 2020.

He has looked like a player reborn at Lille, where he has attracted a number of top clubs to his availability, especially as he nears free agency in the summer of 2025.

There have been whispers of a potential return to United and when asked about these suggestions last month, Gomes welcomed them, indicating he retains a “soft spot” for the club.

Other teams thought to have the midfield technician on their radar include Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and even Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Spurs want to steal a march on their rivals by trying to strike a deal for Gomes as early as when the winter transfer window opens.

“Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a January offer for Angel Gomes as boss Ange Postecoglou and members of the Hotspur Way hierarchy are desperate to beat the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle United to the Lille star’s signature, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.”

“[Postecoglou] is working with technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy to win the race for Gomes.”

“Tottenham have been making inroads in a bid to discover whether it would be possible to snap up Gomes for a small fee when the transfer window reopens in January, according to GMS sources, and they are mulling over whether to launch an offer in an attempt to see off competition from Manchester United and Newcastle.”

The news outlet states that Spurs are eager to test Lille to determine whether they’re willing to gain some money from parting ways with Gomes instead of just letting him leave a few months later for nothing.

GMS add that United “are only likely” to “pounce” on Gomes when he officially becomes a free agent in the summer.

It’s understood that the 24-year-old currently earns less than £11,500-per-week in France but is eyeing a whooping £150,000-per-week, as he seeks to capitalise on the increasing demand for his services.

In the 10 top-flight appearances Gomes has made this term, he has managed one goal and one assist.

INEOS, Man Utd hierarchy ‘locked in blame game’ over £205m ‘shambles’

                ineos,-man-utd-hierarchy-‘locked-in-blame-game’-over-205m-‘shambles’

The Man Utd board are playing the ‘blame game’ after their expensive decision to keep Erik ten Hag on this season, according to reports.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager took his first training session on Monday with many of his first-team players still away on international duty.

Amorim officially took over on November 11, replacing former Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, who led the Red Devils to a disastrous start to the new Premier League season.

And now the Portuguese head coach has a big job on his hands to turn fortunes around at Old Trafford with Man Utd currently 13th in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have won just four Premier League matches all season with only Southampton, Everton and Crystal Palace scoring fewer goals than Man Utd so far this season.

It is unclear whether Amorim will get any help in the January transfer window as he looks to get his squad up to speed with his tactics and philosophy.

The Man Utd hierarchy already supported Ten Hag with the signing of five new players over the summer in the form of Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui.

And now The Sun claim that the Man Utd board ‘are locked in a blame game over who was responsible for their summer shambles’.

The Red Devils ‘have become a laughing stock over their treatment of’ former manager Ten Hag while the club’s summer recruitment strategy has also faced ‘scrutiny following another summer splurge of nearly £180million’.

After speaking to candidates to replace Ten Hag in the summer, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided it was a good idea to keep him on and hand him a one-year contract extension.

‘It cost around £15m to sack Ten Hag alone, while they had to shell out another £10m to bring Portuguese Ruben Amorim in from Sporting Lisbon, including an extra fee so that he could cut short his notice period.’

And now Ratclife, INEOS, the rest of the Man Utd board and senior management team of Sir Dave Brailsford, Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox are debating who should take the most blame,

                The report continues:

‘Now, tough questions are being asked internally about who bears the most responsibility for what went wrong  with their planned squad revamp.’

                  Dan Gore

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has been handed a further boost ahead of his first match on Sunday, as Dan Gore has returned to team training.

Dore has endured a very difficult past few months due to consistently occurring injuries.

In the last January transfer window, he joined Port Vale on loan in search of first-team minutes but picked up an injury in his first match for the side. He never featured for The Valiants again as he underwent rehabilitation for the problem.

Gore suffered yet another setback – this time a freak shoulder injury – that caused him to miss the start of the ongoing campaign.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person revealed that Gore sustained a different issue shortly after his return. U21s boss Travis Binnion said that the midfielder was set to be sidelined for a number of weeks.

The Manchester Evening News have issued an update and indicated that Gore is now back in training.

“Manchester United midfielder Dan Gore is back in training after recovering from a minor injury.”

“Gore has now returned to training and could feature in an academy behind-closed-doors fixture against Middlesbrough, which is set to be played in the North East this week.”

“If everything goes to plan, Gore is expected to play for the Under-21s against West Ham in the Premier League 2 on November 29 – that is the first academy fixture after the international break – and it’s likely that he will spend a month with United before leaving on loan again.injury-free.”

Steven Railston adds that United will indeed entertain loan offers for the 20-year-old. Gore debuted for United’s first team against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last year.

If he goes out on loan and impresses, he could very well give Amorim something to think about moving forward.

United’s Sunday meeting with Ipswich Town at Portman Road kicks off at 16:30 BST.

Rashford agenda clear as ‘most alarming story’ emerges at Manchester United

                    rashford-agenda-clear-as-‘most-alarming-story’-emerges-at-manchester-united

Pep Guardiola extending his Manchester City deal is a back-page splash on any day, never mind during a sleepy international break. But Marcus Rashford…

Put some Pep in your step
It is generally difficult to feel much sympathy for newspapers but if they are ever due a morsel of support it is during an international break.

These few days are particularly awkward, with England and that workshy fop Thomas Tuchel in the rear-view mirror while the Premier League is only just appearing on the horizon. Gary Cotterill has not even had the chance to make Ruben Amorim’s first press conference all about him yet so there is a clear news vacuum.

How useful it would be if, say, perhaps the greatest manager in the sport’s history ended intense speculation over his future by extending his contract with the defending Premier League champions while they are locked in a crisis of sorts. As a completely unrelated example, Manchester City announcing that Pep Guardiola had committed to them through to 2027 would be ideal, wouldn’t it? Imagine if they did it at 8pm and gave editors ample time to create a back-page splash. Ooft. Perfect.

The smallest of pats on the back then for The Sun, the Daily Mail, The Times and The Guardian for fairly understandably deeming it the biggest possible news story on an otherwise quiet Friday morning. That is not only the right but also really only possible thing to do. Nothing else comes close in terms of significance. It is the sort of open goal newspaper editors dream of.

But the Mirror, Star and Express fall under the Reach umbrella for a reason: their desperation to largely ignore that story and grasp at something more negative and Manchester United-flavoured is bizarre.

And at this point we must spare a thought for poor Gary Neville, who was “very calm” as he didn’t want a “‘Neville hammers Rashford’” headline situation, but has very much and entirely inevitably ended up with one now stretching over a couple of days.

That his quotes on Rashford were dealt with in Thursday’s Mediawatch says plenty. This is old news. Even in an era when recycled quotes underpins much of online churnalism it is weird to see a newspaper stoop to those levels when again, the actual Pep Guardiola signing a literal new contract with the genuine Manchester City is right sodding there.

It takes a couple of checks to see that story buried on the back page of three newspapers who should be ashamed to have leapt at the chance to instead keep that critical spotlight on Rashford while warping the more considered words of Neville.

And again, “unprofessional” was not among those words so if David McDonnell wishes to brand Rashford as such he should say it with his chest instead of hiding behind the voice of someone far louder.

But really the problem here lies with whoever made the decision to go to print with those back pages even when a far bigger story landed in their lap. How weird that Reach’s circulation numbers are collapsing.

                    You with the sad eyes
It is a wonder the Mirror didn’t use this story and headline for their back page, instead lumping it only on their website:

‘Kobbie Mainoo shows true colours with nine-word comment about Erik ten Hag’s last season’

The midfielder obviously said a great deal more than nine words during his interview with GQ but discussing the FA Cup win in May and adding “but it definitely didn’t make the season a success” apparently qualifies as ‘revealing one’s real character or intentions, especially when these are disreputable or dishonourable’.

                    Watch out
Neil Custis has written an extensive and broadly fine column in The Sun damning Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the new Manchester United owners for the mistakes they have already made since taking control of all footballing matters.

The Erik ten Hag situation was handled dreadfully in a variety of ways and recruitment is among the facets of business which Custis lays into. But he goes much deeper and even brings us this harrowing tale:

‘The most alarming story came when a staff member with 25 years at the club behind him was told he was being given a commemorative watch for his service.

‘He was then told to pick it up at main reception, where a security guard handed it to him in a polythene bag.

‘That’s a picture to show the grandkids in the future.’

It is a little thoughtless and inconsiderate but when Custis himself literally mentions the 250 redundancies made throughout the club’s non-playing staff, it doesn’t feel like the worst thing INEOS has ever done.

If only this long-serving employee had something else to show the grandkids instead. The commemorative watch itself, maybe? But definitely not that sickening polythene bag.

                    Sheikh it all about
Custis really does lay into the state of Manchester United behind the scenes, and how these issues ‘could have the new boss pining for Lisbon before he knows it’. Good luck, Ruben.

‘Those who championed new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as having put a spring in everyone’s step have lost their bounce,’ he adds.

What about those who put all their eggs in Sheikh Jassim’s takeover basket? Are Manchester United still ‘convinced they will get a deal done by November to sell the club to the Qataris,’ like you wrote back in August? Time is running out. Check your commemorative watch.

The Football Association (FA) have confirmed the reduction of Darren Fletcher’s touchline ban after a successful appeal.

Fletcher was handed a three-match ban and a £7,500 fine for misconduct during Manchester United’s match against Brentford last month.

United came from behind to beat Thomas Frank’s men 2-1. With proceedings goalless heading into the break, referee Samuel Barrott instructed Matthijs de Ligt to leave the pitch to receive further attention for a wound that was bleeding profusely.

With De Ligt temporarily out of action, Brentford took full advantage as Ethan Pinnock headed in the ball from a corner routine.

Former United manager Erik ten Hag and his assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy openly expressed their frustration with the referee’s decision, leading to bookings for their fervent protests.

A report by The Peoples Person revealed that first-team coach Darren Fletcher escalated the situation, continuing his heated protests as both teams headed down the tunnel. The former Scotland international allegedly had to be restrained by his colleagues as he vented his anger at referee Barrott and fourth official Gavin Ward.

The FA have now released a statement relaying that they’ve reduced Fletcher’s touchline ban as well as his fine.

“An independent Appeal Board has allowed an appeal by Darren Fletcher in relation to misconduct at Manchester United’s fixture against Brentford on Saturday 19 October in the Premier League.”

“The FA alleged that around the tunnel area at half time the coach acted in an improper and/or confrontational manner and/or that he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official and the referee and/or assistant referees.”

“Darren Fletcher admitted to this misconduct, but argued that it was only towards the fourth official and the referee, and also denied that he was abusive. An independent Regulatory Commission found these charges to be proven, and it imposed a three-match extended touchline ban and £7,500 fine following a hearing.”

The statement further reads, “The independent Appeal Board has reduced the extended touchline ban and fine to two matches and £6,000 respectively, and its written reasons will be published in due course.”

Fletcher has already served the first of his two-game ban as he missed the 3-0 victory over Leicester City just before the international break.

He will not be in the dugout alongside Ruben Amorim on Sunday, as the new United head coach takes charge of his first game since being appointed as Ten Hag’s replacement.
