Amorim says injured star is back in training and could start in midweek

    amorim-says-injured-star-is-back-in-training-and-could-start-in-midweek

Ruben Amorim says Victor Lindelof has returned to training ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest tomorrow, but will not be available.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the head coach said “Jonny [Evans] is still not training. Victor [Lindelof] returned to training but not available. Maybe the next game.”

He also confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez will return to the squad tomorrow after serving suspensions.

Amorim also spoke of the sad passing of 55-year veteran of the club staff, Kath Phipps, saying:

“We feel it today. It is a sad day. I met her seven years ago, she was the lady behind reception. You feel the love for her. She is an important person who represents this club; friendly, professional, taking care of everyone.”

On United’s league position, he said:

“It’s sad because it’s a very competitive league, it can change with just one result. We have to pass this phase, so i feel the same way, because before the Arsenal game you guys were asking about the top four and now we return to this position (13th). We have to remain calm and keep on doing the job we’re doing.

“We have to manage expectations and when you have a bad result, you have to keep calm. That is clear, in one week you have three games that can change the perception of the team and the table.

“We need to have consistency in how we focus on the job in training. You don’t control the result but you feel you have to win three matches to see a big gap in the table.”

Asked if he is beginning to know what is his best team, he said:

“More or less, yes, we have an idea, but then we have players returning and we have to manage the load. Bruno Fernandes, you feel it against Arsenal he was tired in the end, but you know he will recover in the end.

“If you talk about Manuel [Ugarte], I’ve known him for a long time and he needs a little bit more time.”

The next question was in relation to lessons that may have been learned from the defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday.

“It’s really hard, I learn the same with wins because I focus on the performance;” he said.

“We won 4-0 against Everton but I saw so many things that were wrong. I saw the same against Arsenal. We need time to think about things. We don’t have much time to train and have to prepare for the next opponent, but when I see the team, I think we’re improving in some aspects.

On showing the fans that the team is making an effort, Amorim said:

“I think that is a key point for us. In two weeks and four matches, you can understand that they just want to see effort. In the first moment, they just want to see effort. Then they want to win games.

“After a while, in winning games, they will want to see a very dominant team and then these are the stages we have to follow. This one is the easy one, full effort. Full sprint back and full sprint forward. That is a key point for us, so a lot of our focus is on that.

“I trust in every one of them. What I’m understanding in the training and games is each position played better. What kind of situation is better for one guy or another? These things I need to be close to them, and see the games in the dug-out, as you guys say, not just on TV.

“So I’m learning and we as a staff are learning really fast about what they’re able to do and what they can’t do.”

The embargoed section of the press conference will be available here on The Peoples Person from 10.30pm tonight.

Van Nistelrooy “set to make a loan bid” to land “freakish” United starlet in January – report

      van-nistelrooy-“set-to-make-a-loan-bid”-to-land-“freakish”-united-starlet-in-january-–-report

Manchester United’s breakthrough academy star Toby Collyer is wanted by Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City in January.

The former United coach and interim manager has already been reported to be pursuing three academy stars, Collyer, Dan Gore and Harry Amass.

But it seems the focus is now entirely on Collyer, with the intention being to sign him on loan in the winter window.

The Sun claims that Van Nistelrooy “is planning to use his contacts at Old Trafford to sign” Collyer and that he “is set to make a loan bid for the 20-year-old midfielder.”

“The highly-rated youngster has produced “freakish” running stats in training that can only be bettered by Bruno Fernandes.”

The outlet confirms that United would not contemplate selling the starlet but that “they could be open-minded to a loan move, especially to a manager who they know will give him opportunities in the first-team.”

It looked at the start of the season that Collyer was very much in then manager Erik ten Hag’s first team plans and he was looking set to follow in Kobbie Mainoo’s footsteps, who made the step up with great success last season.

Collyer got minutes in the Community Shield and against Liverpool in the Premier League, as well as filling in at left back against Barnsley in the EFL Cup.

However, he then sustained an injury that has kept him out of action since and with the change in manager, it is no longer clear whether there will be an easy path for him back into the first team squad under Ruben Amorim.

He was predicted to return to action after the international break and was back in training in early November, but so far he has not featured in any of Amorim’s matchday squads.

With Bruno Fernandes now playing frequently as a central midfielder, a loan move to a Premier League club could be the best chance the former Brighton player to get valuable minutes under his belt in the second half of the season.

There would certainly be no shortage of clubs vying to take the talented 20 year old on board, but as The Sun rightly point out, Van Nistelrooy’s mentorship and familiarity would make the Foxes an ideal landing spot for him.

One Man Utd star ‘lucky’ Ratcliffe appointed Amorim tipped to make ‘big impact’ post-Ten Hag

        one-man-utd-star-‘lucky’-ratcliffe-appointed-amorim-tipped-to-make-‘big-impact’-post-ten-hag

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gus Poyet has picked out one Manchester United player who is “lucky” that Ruben Amorim was appointed.

39-year-old Amorim – who was linked with Liverpool and West Ham in the summer – left Sporting Lisbon to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd last month.

Man Utd were 13th in the Premier League when he took over and they remain in this position after his first three games in charge. His side picked up four points in his first two games, but they were deservedly beaten 2-0 at the Emirates by Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Amorim is currently in the process of analysing his squad before the January transfer window and he is at least familiar with Manuel Ugarte, who previously played under the head coach at Sporting Lisbon.

One of Man Utd’s summer priorities was to sign a new defensive midfielder and Ugarte was made their top target. They looked at cheaper alternatives but signed the Uruguay international on deadline day for around £42m plus add-ons.

Ugarte was a bit-part player under former boss Ten Hag, but he’s come into the team of late. Poyet thinks the midfielder is “lucky that Amorim joined Man Utd”.

“Manuel Ugarte is lucky that Ruben Amorim has joined Manchester United as the manager,” Poyet said.

“He wasn’t a regular starter under Erik ten Hag, but now he’ll be working under a manager who he knows well.

“I like the player a lot, I think he can make a big impact at the club under a manager who made great use of his abilities at Sporting Lisbon.

“I was delighted to see him come to the Premier League, but he wasn’t starting under Erik ten Hag.

“Hopefully now he can get an extended run in the starting XI. That will help him to adapt to the Premier League and I hope he can get a good run in the side and make an impact for United.”

Poyet also believes one player could be “very important as a mentor for Ugarte”.

“Casemiro could be very important for United in acting as a mentor for Ugarte,” Poyet added.

“I said the same thing about Aurelien Tchouameni. I gave him his professional debut for Bordeaux at 18 when I was manager, he then made his move to Real Madrid and had the guidance of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro, you can’t ask for much more as a young midfielder.

“He had that time to adapt before going straight into the team, after a month Casemiro had left and Tchouameni was in the team! He hasn’t looked back since and is one of the best defensive midfielders in world football now.

“He had the guidance that prepared him for that, and you need to use these senior players in the right way to guide, whilst giving the young player the time to play. I can see the same situation with Ugarte being guided by Casemiro.”

Former Chelsea and Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit has identified who he believes would be an ideal player for Manchester United to sign in the upcoming transfer window.

Petit is of the opinion that Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk should leave the club, given his lack of playing opportunities. Surprisingly, it is Man United who Petit selected as the player’s ideal destination.

“He’s 23 and he’s wasting too much time already and with the new sports direction at Chelsea, I don’t think he has a future there,” Petit told GamblingZone via Metro.

“However, I think Man United could be an excellent opportunity for him as he suits in Ruben Amorim’s formation. His 3-4-3 could see him play him inside right behind the striker at Old Trafford.”

In addition to unlocking Mudryk’s potential, Petit also expects Amorim to get the best out of the struggling Mason Mount.

“I hope Mason Mount can get back on track under Amorim and I look at Hoijlund and Zirkzee, who both scored two goals in recent games, and it makes me hope the same can happen for Mount,” Petit observed.

“Zirkzee was receiving so much criticism, and now he’s scored two goals, and it shows that Amorim can work his magic; why can’t the same happen to Mount?”

Having arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 for a hefty fee of £89 million, Mudryk has not lived up to his price tag.

He has played in just seven of Chelsea’s 14 Premier League games, featuring primarily as a substitute.

His only start came in Chelsea’s 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers when he was taken off at half-time. This is proof of how he has fallen out of favour with manager Enzo Maresca, with the likes of Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke clearly taking preference.

United may also have room for Mudryk, given Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, where two wingbacks and two wingers are utilised.

What’s more, Mudryk’s lack of game time at Stamford Bridge may enable United to get a good deal for the winger, while he himself may push for a transfer due to a desire to revive his stalling career.

            Dyche, Dyche baby
Those covering football in the media love to find a theme and run with it; Arsenal and set-pieces provide a fine current example.

But problems can arise when the tendency to skew things towards that one theme can override everything else. Which is to say that when Sean Dyche discussed how Everton approach and prioritise their set-pieces, he did not once reference Arsenal or indeed Liverpool. Obviously. Yet…

‘Sean Dyche warns Liverpool about Everton’s set-pieces – and dismisses Arsenal approach’

No, Daily Mirror website, he doesn’t. On both counts. Dyche did not mention Liverpool and just because they happen to be opponents at the weekend is no reason to insinuate he did.

Unless multiple-table-topping, famously data-obsessed Liverpool are unaware that Sean Dyche’s Everton like to show “intent” when attacking free-kicks and corners, this was a pretty rubbish ‘warning’.

And did Dyche ‘dismiss Arsenal approach’? He explained why he is happy to use the “depth of knowledge” of his existing staff and a group of analysts to devise and prepare set-piece routines, before saying:

“That’s not to say there is not a reason for set-piece coaches – that’s up to managers and staff and football directors.”

A big middle finger to Nicolas Jover, clearly.

So don’t be afraid to let them show
There are no fewer than four instances of ‘true colours’ being ‘shown’ on the Manchester Evening News website. Mediawatch is no expert but that seems like too many.

It only becomes more ridiculous when those headlines are listed:

‘Manchester United told what it will take to complete transfer as Ruben Amorim shows true colours’

‘Not good enough’ – Matthijs de Ligt shows true colours after Manchester United loss vs Arsenal’

”I’m grateful’ – Jadon Sancho shows true colours after passing of Manchester United staff member’

‘David Beckham shows true colours as Man United icon pays emotional tribute to Kath Phipps’

Is it really absolutely necessary to equate a manager backing an injured player and an elite-level athlete displaying the mentality of an elite-level athlete with two separate cases of people sending heartfelt messages to someone who has passed who meant a lot to them?

Did Sancho or Beckham show their ‘true colours’ by being nice about a beloved person who has died? Did they really reveal their ‘real character for the first time, especially when it is unpleasant’ when sharing some emotional memories at a sad time? Is that what happened or has your already awful and reductive headline template veered much too far into the distasteful?

            Salah dressing
This is wonderful stuff from Ian Ladyman in the Daily Mail:

‘Watching Mo Salah score two goals and poke another shot against the post after one of those unfathomable jinking runs at Newcastle on Wednesday was to be reminded of his value to Liverpool.

‘And it’s really obvious, his value. It could not be more obvious if he carried it round Merseyside on one of those old-fashioned sandwich boards.

‘So he no longer needs to remind us. Salah has made his point three times in interviews after matches this season. Once at Manchester United, once at Southampton and then again at Anfield after last Sunday’s win over Manchester City.

‘It’s been great for TV stations, websites and newspapers. Great quotes never grow old. But how much good is Salah’s running commentary on his contract frustrations doing Liverpool? How much is it helping his new manager Arne Slot as he tries to win a league title in his debut season? How much is it helping his team-mates?’

tl;dr: Mo Salah should stop talking about his contract situation in interviews after Liverpool games. Completely agreed. It is really weird that he keeps asking himself about his future. And journalists definitely wouldn’t complain and take digs if he started avoiding them.

            Full to the brim
Ladyman is in an extra helpful mood because he has advice for West Ham, too.

‘As for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham, the situation feels more nuanced. In losing 3-1 at Leicester on Monday they had 31 shots yet the bloke they hired to score goals in the summer is only just back from injury.

‘West Ham paid £27m to sign Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund. He is a German international who played in last season’s Champions League final. He also a traditional number nine, a target man, which suggests Lopetegui has a certain way of playing in mind.

‘Injuries mean Fullkrug has played only 74 minutes of league football so far. But he is fit now. So surely we should see how all that plays out before hurrying Lopetegui out of the door?’

Michail Antonio starting 11 of 14 Premier League games ‘suggests Lopetegui has a certain way of playing in mind’. And 15 points from those games after spending almost £150m in the summer suggests it isn’t very good.

Has the absence of Fullkrug really held back a West Ham side with more league goals this season than seventh-placed Nottingham Forest? Or Newcastle and Manchester United?

The Hammers have conceded more goals than all but three Premier League teams. Not sure it’s ‘more nuanced’ than that. But good luck telling supporters to just be patient and let Fullkrug bed in if Wolves turn them over on Monday.

Why does it always Wayne on me?
It is pretty much the perfect Sun story: Wayne and Coleen Rooney, with a dash of I’m A Celebrity and managerial uncertainty thrown in, is tabloid gold dust.

And so ‘major blow to Wayne Rooney as big money TV project on brink of being cancelled due to failing managerial career’ is a headline given prominence on their website, behind only Ange Postecoglou edging towards the Spurs sack.

Rooney will probably be slightly more concerned about his situation at Plymouth than the future of a documentary hoping to cover his ‘ascent in the world of managing,’ but sure.

The only thing which comes even vaguely close to backing up that ‘on brink of being cancelled’ claim in the headline are these quotes from an unnamed ‘TV insider’:

“The whole point of the documentary was to celebrate his move from player to becoming a manager.

“But obviously if that ends up being more of a horror show then the creators, or the Rooneys themselves, may pull the plug on the project.”

That contains rather more ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ and ‘mays’ than first suggested, doesn’t it? It’s a fair old downgrade within a few paragraphs, more vague prediction than insight or revelation.

            But…

Big Weekend: Everton v Liverpool, Tottenham, Amorim, Leno, Baggies v Blades, Serie A title fight

              big-weekend:-everton-v-liverpool,-tottenham,-amorim,-leno,-baggies-v-blades,-serie-a-title-fight

It’s damn near non-stop Barclays right now, with the midweek round barely finished before we’re straight into the meat of the weekend with the Merseyside derby. And it doesn’t stop there…

Game to watch: Everton v Liverpool
Yes, there are all manner of workload-related quibbles to be had with the relentless December fixture list. But the other thing you have to remember about having Premier League games almost every day for a fortnight is this: it’s bloody brilliant.

We remain staunch supporters of the Amazon midweek round, one of the most consistent guarantees of elite Barclays yet devised. We would very much like more of them squeezed into the schedule please, and to heck with hamstrings and knees.

What’s also good about the discombobulating nature of a rare full midweek programme is its ability to shift the dynamic in really quite unexpected ways.

Take this Merseyside Derby, for instance. Any big derby is, of course, an absolutely lovely Saturday lunchtime treat to kick off the weekend. Especially when it seems barely five minutes since you were watching Spurs commit atrocities on Thursday night.

But this one is a really hefty Merseyside Derby for both sides. Everton are desperately trying to keep their heads above the relegation fight, while Liverpool are attempting to extend their lead at the top of the table and pile pressure on the chasing pack who follow them into action across the weekend.

Without any added context it’s a big game. With context it’s an even bigger one than usual. And now, thanks to the unique magic of the midweek madness, it also takes place between one team coming in on the back of a rampant 4-0 home win and another rueing their failure to see a match out. And the identity of those teams is entirely the opposite way round to what might be expected.

Given the general direction of travel for the two teams in recent seasons, Everton’s derby record at Goodison isn’t actually too bad. It’s not exactly formbook-out-the-window stuff, but they have lost only one of the last seven and ran out 2-0 winners in April at a time when Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour was just running out of puff a little bit.

There have been four goalless Goodison draws between these two in those seven games, but we’re going to stick our neck out and say a fifth is unlikely. Everton would probably take it, and have improved sufficiently defensively from their harrowing start to the season to make it plausible, but shutting this Liverpool team out currently appears a plan unlikely to work out.

They’ve scored at least twice in each of their last eight Premier League games, a run that’s included games against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, Aston Villa, Man City and Newcastle.

Despite their fun and frolics against Wolves in the week, you’d imagine Everton will again set their stall out to frustrate and stifle their title-chasing neighbours. It’s worked in the past and will no doubt work again in the future. We don’t think it will work in the present.

Which should be enough to guarantee not only a 0-0, but a 0-0 with zero shots on target from either team.

              Team to watch: Tottenham
Tottenham are, of course, an objectively stupid football team. Whether they win or lose, there’s always an element of farce to it all. It generally feels very predictable, and increasingly so in recent weeks.

Alright, we maybe didn’t have 4-0 in mind, but we can’t really say we were shocked to see Spurs pull a performance out of their arse at the Etihad against the bewildered champions, and we’ve been even less shocked by the rotten displays that have followed against Fulham and Bournemouth. Spurs is as Spurs does.

For all their performative, affected “We’re so crazy and unpredictable!” stylings, you actually generally know precisely what you’ll get from Spurs: utter nonsense, in whatever flavour is most (or least, we guess) appropriate to the occasion.

So this Super Sunday game is actually quite interesting because for once we aren’t entirely certain what flavour of Spursiness to really expect. Spursy Logic dictates this should be back in ‘pull performance out of arse’ territory, but the last two games have been so very, very bad that we just can’t quite bring ourselves to predict it with any confidence. Even though we know we should.

Feels more likely, though, that this goes the way of last season’s infamous clash, albeit perhaps with a slightly less surreal and absurdist bent.

Spurs may be ridiculousness personified, but here they are up against a Chelsea side that is – and we can’t quite believe we’re writing this – really quite determinedly sensible this season, on the field at least.

Spurs’ patched-up defence has been outrageously fortunate to concede only two goals across those execrable Fulham and Bournemouth games, and even the clean sheet at City was a bit of a nonsense.

While Spurs have suffered a lot of defeats this season, it does feel like a proper actually mortifying needle-shifting thrashing is overdue. They might very well need some rapid, significant and on the face of it unlikely defensive improvement to dodge that particular fate one more time here.

              Manager to watch: Ruben Amorim
Feels like the first game in which it might be fair to draw any kind of firm early judgement on Man United’s bright new manager.

His bow at Ipswich was always likely to feel a bit rushed. Home wins against Bodo/Glimt and Everton were the minimum requirement for a passing grade there, and he is not the first and won’t be the last manager to be set-pieced into oblivion at the Emirates.

Forest at home feels like a far more revealing kind of fixture. Not a gimme like Everton, but also not a game in which anything less than three points can really be acceptable despite the fine start Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have made.

Decent as Forest may be even Manchester City managed to sort them out, so there really is no excuse for Amorim here as he continues his quick-fire introduction to English football with a fifth game in 15 days.

READ MORERuben Amorim ‘verbally exploded’ in ‘vicious’ attack on one Man Utd man

              Player to watch: Bernd Leno
Fulham and their keeper have sorted themselves out in the last couple of games after conceding four goals at home to Wolves for some reason.

And that’s just as well, because now he goes up against Arsenal and their unstoppable set-piece machine.

Leno, who left Arsenal just before their return to relevance, has a little more skin in the game than most against his former team. Can he succeed where so many others have failed against the M&S Stoke?

Football League game to watch: West Brom v Sheffield United
It’s shaping up to be an absolute doozy of a promotion race in the Championship, and this weekend the current leaders Sheffield United face a tricky trip to a West Brom side who have embarked on a fascinating if surely misguided policy of drawing all of their games.

It is now, improbably, nine draws for the Baggies in what must go down as the greatest 10-match unbeaten run of all time.

The Blades are on a good unbeaten run of their own but have opted instead to mainly win rather than draw. We have to say, we think that’s the better strategy. But something has to give this weekend.

European game to watch: Napoli v Lazio
Serie A also looks to be throwing up something for the ages, with just four points separating table-toppers Napoli from fifth-placed Lazio heading into their clash this weekend. Atalanta, Inter and Fiorentina will all be keen observers of this.

We don’t need to go too far back into the mists of time for a bit of form guide either. We’re looking back as far as, well, yesterday for clues from a 3-1 home win for Lazio over the league leaders in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia.

If Lazio can do something similar on Napoli’s patch this weekend then the prospect of a six-way title fight really does loom.

“He’s certainly got it”: United treble winner pinpoints key characteristic that will see Amorim succeed

                “he’s-certainly-got-it”:-united-treble-winner-pinpoints-key-characteristic-that-will-see-amorim-succeed

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has highlighted Ruben Amorim’s character as a reason he is likely to succeed at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese coach has made a solid start to his time at United with two wins, a loss and a draw.

A thumping 4-0 win over Everton saw expectations soar but they were brought down to earth with a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in midweek.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Butt claimed that Amorim has the character that former boss Erik ten Hag did not to succeed at the club.

“If you look at all the managers that come after Sir Alex [Ferguson], whether they’ve failed or not, they’re all people that can carry the club on their shoulders.”

“Unfortunately for me I didn’t think Ten Hag had that character. I thought he was not good in interviews, he wasn’t great on TV, he seemed like he knew what he was doing on a coaching pitch but he didn’t transfer [that] onto a game.”

“And I think this guy now, Amorim, one thing I think he’s got is character.”

The former midfielder stated that Amorim has the charisma and the look of a man who “can carry the club on his shoulders – and that’s the biggest thing at Man United. I don’t care what anybody says.”

Before the clash against Arsenal, Amorim claimed that a storm would come and that United would need to feel pain before they were successful and Butt agreed with his conclusion.

“Time will tell if he’s got what he needs to get Man United back up to the levels [they want] with the investment that’s going to have to go into the squad.”

Butt also claimed that it will take up to two years and four transfer windows to properly assess Amorim as he needs to bring in his own type of players.

The former head of first-team development at United asserted that he believed that Amorim did the right thing in getting rid of his hugely popular former teammate, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

After joining the club as a coach in the summer and a successful interim period as manager, many thought Van Nistelrooy would stay on but Amorim made the decision to stick with coaches he knows and trusts and Butt backed this decision.

“I think it was the right thing to do to get rid of [Van Nistelrooy] at the time as well because he’s [going to bring] his own players in, he’s going to have no excuses, he’s going to have no one looking over his shoulder, that’s not his person.”

United will continue a hectic festive period when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford tomorrow evening.

Manchester United could be without Harry Maguire for their trip to the Etihad to take on Manchester City on Sunday 15th of December.

Maguire has struggled for gametime this season due to a combination of injuries and the signing of Matthijs de Ligt in the summer.

As a result, he has only started four Premier League games this season.

Nonetheless, new coach Ruben Amorim’s switch to a back three has provided a lifeline to all centre backs at the club and now the 31 year old is back from injury, he may get more opportunities as the new coach continues his policy of heavy rotation.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United are in danger of losing the player just as soon as he has returned to the fold.

“Manchester United could be without Harry Maguire for the derby with Manchester City later this month,” the outlet states.

“The centre back, who returned to the side in the midweek defeat at Arsenal, is now just one yellow card away from a ban. He was booked at the Emirates Stadium, his fourth of the season, and should he be cautioned in the home game against Nottingham Forest this weekend then he will miss the derby.”

The Red Devils were already forced to play without Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo against Arsenal at the Emirates due to both picking up a yellow against Everton last weekend.

Maguire is currently the only United player on four yellow cards but Diogo Dalot has three and will want to avoid suspension ahead of a busy festive period of football.

With Martinez returning from suspension and Leny Yoro from injury, Maguire may not be required anyway as a De Ligt, Martinez and Yoro back three could be Amorim’s preferred trio in the heart of the defence.

Therefore, Maguire may get a chance against FC Viktoria Plzeň in the Europa League instead next Thursday.

United will kick off against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday evening at 17:30 (UK time).

United go head-to-head with Spurs in “direct competition” for world-class midfield maestro – report

                    united-go-head-to-head-with-spurs-in-“direct-competition”-for-world-class-midfield-maestro-–-report

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to compete for the signature of FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

United have been linked to the Dutchman since the summer of 2022 when they had a €85 million fee accepted from the Spanish club.

However, De Jong rejected the chance to join his former manager Erik ten Hag at United and the Red Devils went on to sign Casemiro that summer from Real Madrid.

Spanish outlet Fichajes is adamant that United, alongside Tottenham, still hold a major interest in acquiring the midfielder.

“Frenkie de Jong, one of the key players in Barcelona’s squad, could be close to leaving Camp Nou,” the outlet reports.

“The Dutch midfielder has attracted the interest of several Premier League giants, with Tottenham being the club that has been most insistent in recent days in trying to secure his services. This interest is added to that of Manchester United, who have been closely following the player’s situation for some time, although now direct competition seems to have emerged between the two English clubs.”

In a fresh twist to the story, it is added that finally De Jong might be ready to embrace interest from abroad and willingly depart the Catalan giants.

It is claimed that the decision to let the “fundamental” midfielder go is not an easy one for Barcelona but the financial needs of the club may “tip the balance”.

Interestingly, it is stated that “the possibility of exploring a new challenge in the Premier League and the temptation of an ambitious project could seduce the player.”

The 27 year old’s ability to handle the ball under pressure and precise passing are seen as very attractive qualities to both United and Spurs.

The Spanish site concludes by stating that Ruben Amorim maintains United’s long-standing interest in the Dutch international as an “historic transfer” could be triggered in the near future.

De Jong would certainly bring a level of passing to the United midfield that will likely be lost once Christian Eriksen leaves but it is debatable whether he would have the physical intensity that Amorim seems to crave in players.

Man Utd transfer: Amorim makes ‘U-turn’ as Liverpool target ‘tops list’; Romano confirms signing plan

According to reports, Manchester United have performed a ‘transfer U-turn’ as there has been a ‘slight tweak in strategy under Ruben Amorim’.

On Wednesday night, Amorim suffered his first loss as Man Utd boss as his side were deservedly beaten 2-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba scored as the visitors struggled with corners.

The Red Devils are currently 13th in the Premier League and seven points adrift of the Champions League places.

39-year-old Amorim would presumably prefer to make several signings in January, but it’s been reported that he will have a ‘tight budget’ to work with in the winter.

United may have to be creative in the market and offload unwanted talents to free up funds for signings. It is expected that one of their priorities will be to sign a new left-back.

A report from GiveMeSport claims Man Utd have ‘made a U-turn’ after Luke Shaw suffered an injury setback.

The England international missed the first few months of the 2024/25 campaign with a knee injury and made just two cameo appearances off the bench before he revealed his setback earlier this week.

Shaw said: “It’s hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forwards, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback.

“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period.

“I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.”

The report from GiveMeSport claims Man Utd ‘will green-light plans to buy a replacement’ as ‘Amorim is now prioritising the acquisition of a new left-back in the January transfer window’.

A couple of potential targets are mentioned but the report claims Bournemouth standout Milos Kerkez – who is also being linked with Liverpool – ‘tops their list’.

‘The decision to go into the market for a new left-back marks a slight tweak in strategy under Amorim, who has been assessing the squad’s strengths and weaknesses since his arrival at Manchester United.

‘The Red Devils must now decide whether to make a substantial investment in a long-term solution or opt for a more pragmatic, short-term signing. As the January window approaches, the club is narrowing down its list of targets, each offering distinct qualities and challenges.

‘One of the top names on their list will be Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. Manchester United have previously touched base over a potential move for the Hungarian, who has impressed with his dynamic performances in the Premier League.

‘Kerkez combines pace and technical ability with defensive discipline, making him an ideal fit for Amorim’s system. However, Liverpool’s interest in the 20-year-old complicates matters, as competition for his signature can be expected.

‘Another player from the Premier League that has been regularly linked is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Rayan Ait-Nouri. The Algeria international is under consideration, with the player renowned for his attacking contributions down the left flank.

‘His dribbling ability and composure in advanced positions could add a new dimension to Manchester United’s play. However, Wolves would look for a big fee, and it is not clear how Amorim views him as an overall target.’

Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that Man Utd are interested in Kerkez. He said: “Left-back is a position that they will for sure cover next year – let’s see if it’s January or summer – but Milos Kerkez is a player they like.

“With Randal Kolo Muani, zero contact at the moment. He could leave PSG but for the moment there’s nothing with Manchester United.”
