United, Newcastle to battle it out for PL talisman, club could be forced to sell – report

Manchester United are keen on young Southampton winger Tyler Dibling but face serious competition from Newcastle United, according to reports.

The 18-year-old has been the one of the few bright sparks in a harrowing season for the Saints, and his impressive performances in a struggling team have put top sides on alert.

What’s more, Football Insider have claimed that the player is “keen” on a move to either side as he looks to continue his meteoric rise.

Their report states that the two Uniteds are “racing to sign” the player, and Newcastle could look to steal a march on the Old Trafford side by making a move for him in January.

The report notes, however, that any deal is “more likely to take place in the summer as Southampton are not willing to see a key player leave mid-way through the season.”

The south coast side are rock bottom of the Premier League with just one win from 16 games, and are fresh off a 0-5 hiding at home to Tottenham Hotspur which saw manager Russell Martin lose his job.

Martin’s spell in charge sticks in the mind for all the wrong reasons, but his response to a suggested £21 million fee for Dibling was memorable: “I’m not sure you’ll get his left foot for that.”

It showed how much he valued the youngster, but he went on to explain how demands made by the player’s agent were slowing talks over a new contract.

In addition, Football Insider have claimed that the club “could be forced to cash in on the winger” if they are relegated “in an attempt to balance the books”.

While anything can happen in football, their incoming manager will have a tough job on his hands to avoid that.

All in all, there is a “growing feeling” that a sale for Dibling will be sanctioned.

The report states that “Dibling would be equally keen on the step up to either Man United or Newcastle”, but the clubs can expect to face fresh challengers for his signature should he become available.

Dibling has one goal from 15 Premier League games for the Saints, operating chiefly from the right but with spells through the middle as well.

He has played the full 90 minutes in four of their last five games as his breakout season at the top level gathers pace.

Man Utd, Barcelona ‘negotiating’ Rashford swap deal as Amorim eyes ‘hot potato’

Man Utd and Barcelona are currently ‘negotiating’ a swap deal involving wantaway forward Marcus Rashford, according to reports.

Reports emerged last week that the Red Devils are ready to sell Rashford for ‘top offers’ in the January transfer window after considering his sale in the summer too.

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim left Rashford and Garnacho out of his 20-man squad for their derby clash against arch-rivals Man City over their attitude.

And Rashford said in an interview on Tuesday that he is ready to leave Man Utd with the Red Devils forward looking for a “new challenge”.

Amorim seemed to play down Rashford’s comments at his press conference on Wednesday and insisted Man Utd are “better with” the England international.

But reports in Spain now claim that Barcelona and Man Utd are ‘negotiating a swap deal’ involving Rashford and Frenkie de Jong ahead of the January transfer window.

Man Utd are showing ‘great interest’ in Barcelona midfielder De Jong with the Netherlands international only starting two matches in all competitions this term under Hansi Flick.

The report describes De Jong as a ‘hot potato’ at the Camp Nou with the Catalan giants ‘working on finding a solution’ for their highest-paid player.

Erik ten Hag was keen on bringing the Dutchman to Man Utd during his tenure and now Amorim ‘still believes that he could be an interesting addition to the midfield’.

Amorim ‘wants’ Rashford ‘to leave’ and ‘he has been offered’ to Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco ‘as a bargaining chip’.

👉 Marcus Rashford is ‘talentless ambitionless spineless waste of space’

BBC Sport chief football news reporter Simon Stone reckons Amorim has handled Rashford’s comments well and we ‘will know soon enough’ if the Man Utd forward is in his plans.

Stone wrote: ‘If Manchester United offered guidance on how not to create even more turmoil around an already delicate situation, Ruben Amorim has followed it.

‘We know enough of Amorim now to know he is not someone who will hold back just for the sake of it, so there is an element of reality about his observations that Marcus Rashford is a big talent – ‘and we need big talents’.

‘But this is also a case where actions will speak louder than words.

‘Amorim says he wants Rashford to stay. But also that players have to meet his standards. He says Rashford – and Alejandro Garnacho – will be assessed for selection on the training ground performances.

‘It is fair to assume therefore that if neither reaches the required standard, they will not travel to London for the EFL Cup tie at Tottenham – even if Rashford has shaken off the illness that prevented him from training on Monday.

‘After Tottenham, United have Premier League games against Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle.

‘We will know soon enough where Rashford fits in Amorim’s plans. If he fails to reach the standard his new boss demands, the 27-year-old will not feature.’

Ruben Amorim says he does not want to lose Marcus Rashford ahead of Manchester United’s League Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game, the United head coach was asked about Marcus Rashford’s comment that he needs “a new challenge” and replied:

“I think he’s right. We have a new challenge here, the biggest in football, we are in a difficult situation. I hope all my players are ready.” he said.

Asked if he had spoken to Rashford about the interview he gave with Henry Winter suggesting he wants to leave, Amorim said he had not.

“No [I’ve not spoken to Rashford yet]. It [the interview] was yesterday. We gave a day off to the lads. He’s our player and he’s ready for the next game.”

“I spoke with a lot of players individually and during training, what I want is to take the best stuff of Marcus Rashford as the player. So I don’t talk about the future, I just talk about the present. I want the best of each one of them and that is the key point for me.

“I just want to win and help the team to be better. We are better with Rashford, that’s simple and we try our best to push Marcus Rashford to the level he is at before.”

Responding to whether he wants to keep Rashford at the club, Amorim replied:

“Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents and he’s a big talent. So, he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus”.

Asked if Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho will be involved in tomorrow’s game, he said:

“We have one more training but it’s the same as the other players. If they train well, then I have to make a choice.

“We’ll see at the end of training – I expect the best of each player every day so we will see after training.”

“This is in the future, my focus is to have all the players in the best that they can be to prepare for each game. There is no if at this kind of club, it is just Tottenham and let’s focus on this game.”

United have made “formal offer” for perfect Rashford replacement who “wreaks havoc” on defences – report

          Nico Williams

Manchester United reportedly want Nico Williams to replace Marcus Rashford at the club.

After being left out of the squad to face Manchester City, numerous stories were written about the Englishman’s future at Old Trafford.

These went into overdrive yesterday when he claimed in an interview that he was ready for a new challenge, suggesting he would be leaving the Red Devils in the near future.

One option United have looked at in the past to bolster their attack is Nico Williams.

The Spanish international starred in his nation’s Euro 2024 victory in the summer and is now seen as one of the world’s most exciting attacking talents.

It was assumed by many in the summer that the winger was destined for a move to FC Barcelona, but it never came to pass, and he has starred for Athletic Bilbao as they go from strength to strength in La Liga and the Europa League.

Fichajes report that “Manchester United is targeting Nico Williams as their possible star signing to fill the potential gap left by Marcus Rashford in the upcoming transfer market.”

“The Red Devils have reportedly made a formal offer to secure the services of the Athletic Bilbao winger, aiming to secure young and explosive talent for their attacking line.”

Nonetheless, it is mentioned that United will by no means have a clear run at the player as they will face competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

“His ability to wreak havoc on the wings and pose a constant threat make him an ideal fit for United’s setup”, alongside his €58 million release clause, make him an attractive proposition for Amorim’s side.

United are reportedly “determined” to lead the race for the winger as they strive to stay relevant on the international stage, even after the loss of Rashford.

Williams has provided two goals and five assists in 22 matches this season in all competitions for the Basques.

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim insists the Red Devils are “better with” Marcus Rashford in their side despite his explosive comments.

Amorim left Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of his 20-man squad for their 2-1 derby win over Man City on Sunday with rumours they could now face uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

And in a interview with journalist Henry Winter on Tuesday, Man Utd forward Rashford revealed that he is ready to leave the Red Devils for a “new challenge” in January.

Man Utd forward Rashford said: “For me, personally, I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.

“When I leave it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings.’ You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Man United. That’s me. I will always be a Red…

“I’m halfway through my career. I don’t expect my peak to be now. The best is yet to come? 100%. That’s my mentality…

Responding to the forward’s comments, Amorim said: “I don’t talk about the future we talk about the present.

It is just Tottenham and let’s focus on the game.”

              7) Slot, 3) Arteta, 2) Howe – ranking eight managers by how desperately they need Carabao glory

                7)-slot,-3)-arteta,-2)-howe-–-ranking-eight-managers-by-how-desperately-they-need-carabao-glory

We can surely all agree that football simply does not get bigger than Carabao Cup quarter-final week. Just one of the great midweeks of the year, a chance to squeeze in yet another fixture just before Christmas and test the hamstrings of anyone yet to suffer that familiar winter twang.

There are eight teams still standing, in accordance with quarter-final traditions, and it would be fair to say that for many reasons old and new the dear old Carabao occupies contrasting positions of significance and importance for the eight managers involved. So let’s rank them, shall we? Everyone loves it when things are ranked.

                8) Simon Rusk (Southampton)
It would be quite the story, but a lot has had to go right and also really very wrong indeed for Rusk to even still be in charge at Southampton when the Carabao final rolls around in March.

Looks certain at the very least to have the chance to steer Southampton into the last four this week, though. A permanent replacement for Russell Martin doesn’t appear all that imminent, so it falls to Rusk to tick the boxes and complete the formalities of getting past Liverpool in the last eight.

                7) Arne Slot (Liverpool)
The most obvious Bigger Fish To Fry situation among the eight remaining managers, with Liverpool cruising in the now hibernating Champions League but more importantly now in the process of seeing their lead atop the Premier League trimmed by Chelsea’s relentless form and their own new-found tendency to draw games or even more carelessly have them postponed.

Should make it into the last four without trying too hard given the identity of their last-eight opponents, but almost certain in that case to come up against more Carabao-invested opposition in the semis.

We would suggest the Carabao is slightly more of a priority for Slot specifically than Liverpool more generally. But only slightly. It’s definitely a bonus to be able to get that first trophy under the belt, and Jose Mourinho used to speak with great fondness – back when such emotions were still available to him – about the League Cup as a launch-pad for further, greater success. It would be a lovely little bonus, but harsh as it is, if Slot’s season were now to end with a Carabao and nothing more it would be distinctly underwhelming.

As for Liverpool, they’ve won two of the last three. Nobody needs that much Carabao.

                6) Ruben Amorim (Manchester United)
Tricky for Ruben is the Carabao. On the one hand, it’s very clear from his shifting team selections and use of absolutely every single substitution available to him that he is desperately using every available match to glean as much information as he possibly can about the squad he’s inherited.

But it’s equally clear that he’d very much like some time and space to be able to do some proper training-ground work to impart his vision and methods to a squad still understandably struggling to adapt to what is a very different way of doing things.

Spurs up next for Amorim so literally anything could happen there, but if he emerges from that trip to north London with a semi-final place you’d imagine he’d give it plenty when the time comes. After all, Erik Ten Hag won this thing in his first season and that worked out absolutely brilliantly.

                5) Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace)
Probably more interested now than he was a few weeks ago when Palace were still straining desperately to ease clear of a relegation fight in which they should really be nothing more than half-interested spectators.

When the quarter-final draw was made it would have been hard to make a case for Palace going to Arsenal and getting anything more out of it than the relief of a game that didn’t have potentially dread-filled real-world consequences for their Premier League status.

No longer quite true, that. Arsenal are more vulnerable, and Palace less wretched. It does appear quite clearly now that there are – as we all very strongly suspected – at least three teams much worse than this Palace side and their very decent manager.

Arsenal in a Carabao quarter-final now feels like a much more appealing genuine free hit with actual chance of progression.

It’s not going to usurp the 2022 Europa League success with Eintracht Frankfurt atop his CV, but it would be a welcome second major title for a manager whose ability doesn’t really tally with a relatively blank honours section.

                4) Thomas Frank (Brentford)
Frank has absolutely nothing left to prove at Brentford given where he’s taken them from and to, but the slightly negative corollary is what does he really have left to achieve? There is a ceiling for clubs like his that is almost impossible to break through, and even the League Cup isn’t the potential source of glory for smaller but well-established Premier League sides it once was.

As squad depth across the Big Six – and really specifically here United, City, Liverpool and Chelsea – has grown it has become so much harder for teams like Brentford now to do what your Leicesters and Birminghams, your Middlesbroughs and Swanseas, the Blackburns of this world once did.

The last 11 League Cups have been hoarded by Liverpool, United, City and Chelsea and there is no longer the expectation there once was that a club like Brentford might be able to snaffle one.

It nevertheless still represents the least unlikely way for Frank to do something truly new to put a cherry on top of all he’s achieved here.

And then you get a shot at the Conference League.

                3) Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)
Would address a couple of quirks, at least. First, that for all Arsenal’s dramatic improvement under Arteta the only actual silverware to show for it remains the FA Cup win from his first Covid-interrupted season, a season in which Arsenal were for the most part really quite rubbish in all the other competitions.

The second is Arsenal’s own p*ss-poor record in this competition. Sure, it’s never been the absolute tip-top number-one priority but they haven’t won the thing since the Domestic Cup Double of 1993 and that was only their second win.

Even perennial trophy-dodgers Spurs have won it twice since Arsenal last managed, while all told the other five Big Sixers have won 23 Carabaos and Coca-Colas and Worthingtons and Capital Ones and Carlings since Arsenal got their hands on one. That seems quite silly.

                2) Eddie Howe (Newcastle)
One of two managers in this list who a) could really do with a trophy this season and also very importantly b) could definitely point to even this most tinpot of all the majors as a significant breakthrough moment for him and his club and then also c) should welcome anything that does anything to ease the pressure on their job and silences the whispers for any length of time.

Howe himself – for understandable enough reasons – still has no top-tier team trophy to sit alongside an undeniably impressive collection of individual manager of the month and year gongs.

Newcastle’s own silverware drought, meanwhile, is one that would make Tottenham blush having failed to add a single proper bauble to the St James’ Park trophy cabinet since the 1950s. We’re really sorry, lads, but the Intertoto Cup absolutely does not count.

A certified genuine Carabao, though? Now you’re talking.

                1) Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham)
Set his stall out very early this season with his infamous ‘I always win something in year two’ claim. While historically undeniably accurate, it was nevertheless a wild move to leave oneself quite such a hostage to fortune when said fortunes are those of Tottenham Hotspur, the final-level boss of banter clubs.

It does, though, also feel like Postecoglou’s Spurs absolutely could do it. Unlike previous iterations of Spurs that possessed the wherewithal to potentially challenge for a cup, Postecoglou has masterminded a situation where their league form is so absurdly inconsistent that it is no longer a viable route to anything. He’s playing 4D chess, mate. How to stop this club being obsessed with finishing fourth? Somehow be 10th with a goal difference of +17. He’s a genius, a visionary.

There are thus multiple reasons for Postecoglou and Spurs to absolutely throw everything at the cups this season. They are in many ways a glorious and high-gloss version of the classic Spurs sides of old; a threat to absolutely anybody in a one-off game but a threat to absolutely nobody across 38 or 42.

Three eminently plausible routes to trophy success exist for Postecoglou and his band of merry man (and Timo Werner) with a home quarter-final here against a plausibly less interested Manchester United, a kind third-round FA Cup draw and the weakest-looking Europa League in years.

For the rest of us it now only remains to sit back and discover precisely how and when they go about f*cking each one of those opportunities directly into the sun.

Arsenal are also interested in Manchester United target Olympiacos’ Charalampos Kostoulas.

The Red Devils are keen to strengthen their attack in the coming windows as goals continue to be a problem for the team.

Ruben Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon team were famous for their free-flowing style and constant menace on opposition goals, and he will hope he can repeat this trick with United in time.

What’s more, the current issues around Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, after both were left out of the derby, are likely to make it even more necessary that United try to bolster their attack.

In that context, it has been reported that United are scouting versatile Olympiacos forward Charalampos Kostoulas.

However, according to CaughtOffside, the Red Devils are not the only team aiming to make a move for the 17 year old sensation.

“Arsenal are reportedly keen on an exciting potential double transfer raid on Greek giants Olympiacos in January.”

“Arsenal have been left impressed by the two teenagers as they’ve established themselves in the Olympiacos first-team this season, showing what they’re capable of in the Europa League.”

“Kostoulas is also wanted by Manchester United, sources have told CaughtOffside, so we could see an intriguing battle on the cards here as we get closer to January.”

The young Greek star is also reportedly admired by Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach, Juventus and Fiorentina, who are all keeping tabs on him.

The youngster has impressed this season, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for the senior Olympiacos side.

Kostoulas has been described as a player with “killer instinct, great off-the-ball movement, above-average decision-making, timing, intelligence, composure, and flair in the final third”, so it is clear to see why he has so many top clubs around the world vying for his attention.

With the signings of Chido Obi, Sekou Kone and Diego Leon, United have shown they are not frightened to do what it takes to secure the signings of elite teenage talent.

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez may leave the club during the January transfer window, sparking interest from Manchester United.

The development follows reports of internal tensions and criticism from Milan’s head coach.

Hernandez was left out of Milan’s recent goalless draw against Genoa in Serie A, a decision that followed scathing comments from coach Paulo Fonseca about some players not fully committing in matches.

Fans also voiced their discontent, targeting the France international with verbal insults.

The 26-year-old, a key figure in Milan’s defensive setup and one of their rotating captains this season, has found himself under scrutiny despite his consistent performances in recent years.

Manuel Quilon, Hernandez’s agent, met with Milan directors on Monday.

After the meeting, Quilon told reporters that the talks did not centre around a contract extension.

While he insisted that Hernandez wants to remain with Milan and is open to renewing his contract, reports suggest that the atmosphere within the club paints a different picture.

According to journalist Marco Conterio of Tuttomercatoweb, Milan has offered Hernandez a new contract worth €5 million per season plus bonuses. However, the club has reportedly informed the player and his representatives that he will be allowed to leave in January if a suitable bid is received.

United have struggled with injuries and inconsistency in their defence this season, making Hernandez an attractive target.

His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively would align well with Ruben Amorim’s tactical vision.

While Hernandez’s agent has reiterated his client’s desire to stay in Milan, the unfolding situation suggests a potential departure could be on the horizon.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed that many people within the football club did not believe Amad Diallo would make it in English football.

The Ivorian joined in 2021 but struggled massively for playing time.

In his first three seasons at the club, he only made nine appearances, being sent out on loan to Glasgow Rangers before an incredibly fruitful spell at Sunderland.

Injury in the pre-season tour of 2023 meant he only began to get chances in the first team in the last few months of last season, but he has come to life this season, playing in 23 games, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

He underlined his importance to the team with a stunning display at the weekend versus Manchester City.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand highlighted that his progress was hardly seen as inevitable by many at the club.

Commenting on initial impressions about the player, he said, “immediately it felt like, not for us, not good enough. People inside and outside the club were thinking, too small, too lightweight, not dynamic or powerful enough for this league.”

“They were thinking, I don’t know what he is; he’s a good footballer, but he’s not got it.”

Ferdinand then praised the player for turning the situation on its head and becoming one of the key members of Ruben Amorim’s side.

“My man has seen and heard that stuff and used it as fuel and gone to work, gone out on loan and look at him now.”

The United legend claimed his ability to turn the situation around is a “testament” to his character and that he is now arguably the first name on the team sheet.

Ferdinand also stated that the Ivorian had “the biggest heart” and that he was set on proving the doubters wrong with his immense work rate and skill.

“With and without the ball, he’s been brilliant. I think he’s a real footballer. I don’t think that was ever in doubt, everyone could see the talent. But they just didn’t see the other side of him when you look at him.”
