“I saw it coming:” Owen Hargreaves calls out Ruben Amorim for this glaring problem after 2-0 loss to Wolves

    “i-saw-it-coming:”-owen-hargreaves-calls-out-ruben-amorim-for-this-glaring-problem-after-2-0-loss-to-wolves

Manchester United endured a night to forget as they slumped to a bitter 2-0 defeat to Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While Man United saw more of the ball into the first half and controlled momentum for long phases, Bruno Fernandes’ sending-off in the 47th minute unravelled his team’s performance.

With still so much of the match to play, it was almost predictable that United would crumble under the pressure, particularly given their poor run of form leading into the match.

Although the likes of Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund clearly let United down with their shambolic performances, former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves was of the opinion that the reasons for United’s struggles are not limited to individual players.

“I saw it coming before the game,” Hargreaves started off by admitting. “As soon as I saw the team, I said this won’t be easy. And it wasn’t. They don’t create any sense of play; they don’t look like scoring.”

“Look, he’s got his way of playing,” the former Champions League winner star said of Amorim. “He has been successful there at Sporting, but right now, this team needs to find a way to get some form of results. Right now, they don’t look like they could get a result anywhere. This is a team that’s in a relegation battle.”

“At some point, you need to watch Manchester United and know who’s gonna play,” Hargreaves declared, squarely laying some blame on Amorim’s team selection.

“Right now, you never know who’s gonna play because there’s so many different players rotating all the time. I think for him, it would be a lot easier to say, these are my guys who are on form, these 14, 15, but right now, there’s nothing.”

“I don’t see any partnerships,” Hargreaves later observed. “You watch United now, you don’t know who’s gonna play. So, I think, in terms of having a bit of consistency, goalscoring was a thing. Now it’s the conceding goals from set pieces. There’s a lot of issues.”

Still, Hargreaves did have some praise for Amorim.

“I think the only saving grace is they’ve got a really good manager. He’s a brilliant communicator, but it’s gonna be a lot harder than he thought,” he continued. “They’re gonna have to give him time. He’s a great manager.”

Overall, Hargreaves seems to be of the opinion that Amorim is the right manager for the job – he simply needs time to find his feet at what is a club in jeopardy. Hopefully, the January transfer window will provide him with his first opportunity to build the squad of his liking.

Amorim must stop weeding out imposters after another crushing defeat to relegation strugglers

      amorim-must-stop-weeding-out-imposters-after-another-crushing-defeat-to-relegation-strugglers

Manchester United suffered their third consecutive defeat, losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-2 at the Molineux Stadium on Thursday.

Bruno Fernandes saw a second yellow card within the first minute of the second half and the visitors proceeded to implode and concede another set-piece goal before the hosts scored their second in added time to make matters sure.

Ruben Amorim has now won only seven points from a possible 21 and has accrued even less points in his first seven games than former boss Erik ten Hag won in his final seven ties.

The Portuguese had announced when he first arrived that he would not compromise with his vision and would continue to utilise his favoured 3-4-3 system.

      Players simply not good enough

He was being naive if he thought he could get a tune out of these players, who have failed multiple managers before, especially with the squad lacking the resources to play his preferred style.

The club have an abundance of inconsistent wingers and not enough quality midfielders for Amorim’s style to work. And two of those players have had a falling-out with the head coach.

Marcus Rashford missed out for the fourth game running while Alejandro Garnacho was only utilised as a second-half substitute.

The skipper, the club’s best bet at getting them out of trouble over the years, does not fit on the left of a front three while he lacks the discipline to play further back and it is clear, that he is not a natural fit and has struggled as a result.

The squad has no wingbacks with all the left-sided full-backs injury-prone while Diogo Dalot has continued to struggle on the left, but has been forced to play there due to a lack of options.

Both goalkeepers are shockingly bad when it comes to their saving technique, caught out in identical fashion, while the defence just does not realise the concept of set-piece defending. What Amorim’s assistant is doing, only god knows!

The less said about the strikers the better, both look better as substitutes and an open play goal looks unlikely with this team.

      Should Amorim compromise his vision?

Thursday’s loss means the Red Devils are 14th in table and with Newcastle United and Liverpool to come next, the team look primed for a relegation scrap.

Amorim might need to adapt and go back to the drawing room to play to this team’s strengths — using wingers and allowing the captain to spam Hollywood passes to his forwards. The current method is surely weeding out the imposters in the squad but at what cost?

Whether he compromises with his vision remains to be seen but surely the players need to deliver more in terms of intensity. They got outfought and outrun again.

Things will get far worse before they improve. Similar thoughts have been echoed before and fans are wondering what it actually means by far worse. Surely not a relegation fight?

0 shots, 0 dribbles, 5 passes, 1/5 ground duels: United star was woefully out of his depth in loss to Wolves

        0-shots,-0-dribbles,-5-passes,-1/5-ground-duels:-united-star-was-woefully-out-of-his-depth-in-loss-to-wolves

Bruno Fernandes was shown a red card in the early stages of the second half as Manchester United slipped to yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan found the back of the net to pile further misery on United, who have now lost their last three matches across all competitions.

United had 49% possession in comparison to Wolves’ 51% share of the ball.

Ruben Amorim’s men managed four shots on target from their total 11 cracks at goal. The hosts, on the other hand, fired seven shots with four of these requiring Andre Onana to intervene.

The Red Devils put together 455 passes with a pass accuracy of 80%. Wolves strung 17 more passes with a better pass completion of 83%.

Several United players failed to turn up, with Rasmus Hojlund being one of them.

The Dane got the nod to lead the line ahead of Joshua Zirkzee and he simply didn’t deliver the goods. He was bullied for large spells of the match and had no sight of goal.

During the 79 minutes he was on the pitch before being taken off, Hojlund failed to register a shot, whether on target or off target.

He failed to complete the one dribble he embarked on and only made a measly five passes.

Hojlund touched the ball 14 times.

The 21-year-old won just one of the five ground duels he delved into and came out on top in two of the six aerial challenges he was required to contest.

The forward lost the ball on seven occasions and was dribbled past twice.

        (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Hojlund continues to prove he may not have what it takes to be relied upon to be United’s primary source of goals and his performance against Wolves was a stark reminder of this assessment.

It doesn’t get easier for United, whose next assignment is against high-flyers Newcastle on Monday.

Four things we learnt as United’s misery continues to pile up in 2-0 defeat to Wolves

          four-things-we-learnt-as-united’s-misery-continues-to-pile-up-in-2-0-defeat-to-wolves

Manchester United travelled to Molineux to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers today, hoping to get back to winning ways after two straight defeats.

Andre Onana took up his usual place between the sticks with Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro forming the back three.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot started as the wingbacks. Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte were Ruben Amorim’s chosen midfield pair again.

Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes started as the two number tens whilst Rasmus Hojlund was brought back into the team after dropping to the bench last time out.

Here are four things we learnt from the Boxing Day match.

          Manuel Ugarte continues to impress

Whilst United failed to lay much of a glove on Wolverhampton in the first half, Ugarte continued to impress in the middle of the park.

He applied his usual boundless energy and made numerous tackles and interceptions.

The Uruguayan also showed a couple of nice touches to get out of trouble and square the ball to a teammate.

The 23 year old will never be a passing sensation but he is proving time and time again that he deserves to be given a significant run in the team as he brings the intensity that Amorim demands.

Whichever striker United play they struggle

There is a constant debate between United fans which striker should start, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dane has won out most times but once again, he failed to make any real impression on the game.

Hojlund clearly has a lot of talent but he needs to find a way to get himself into games as he currently does not have the luxury to have chance after chance created for him.

Nonetheless, while it is easy to blame the 21 year old, it is hardly like Zirkzee gets himself any more involved in the games on a regular basis.

There is much talk that United want to spend big on a centre forward like Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres but they also need to find a way to get their number nines involved in the game.

Bruno Fernandes’ ill-discipline costs United again

Fernandes did not have the best start to the season, being sent off twice in a week versus Tottenham Hotspur and Porto earlier in the campaign.

He had turned a corner when Ruud van Nistelrooy took over from Erik ten Hag but has slowed down a bit under Ruben Amorim.

Disaster struck in this game when he was sent off early in the second half through ill-discipline.

The United captain could perhaps consider himself unlucky to have been sent off after two fouls but it was a stupid tackle to make in the context of already being on a yellow.

Fernandes’ passion has been one of his most attractive qualities during his time at Old Trafford, but his poor discipline under pressure has given his critics significant ammunition once again.

Set piece problems show no sign of ending

United were once again undone by a set piece and unbelievably conceded another goal direct from a corner.

The Red Devils have now conceded 10 goals from set pieces all season and the problem doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

Just like Altay Bayindir against Tottenham Hotspur a few days ago, Onana was flustered by minimal pressure from the opposition and the ball swung into the back of the net.

Ruben Amorim can point to the fact that his team have barely had any time on the training pitch to rectify these problems, but if anything, they have got worse under his management. He has taken responsibility for the issue but fans will want to see actions rather than words.

Moment of madness: this rash decision cost United big time in shock 2-0 loss vs. Wolves

            moment-of-madness:-this-rash-decision-cost-united-big-time-in-shock-2-0-loss-vs.-wolves

Manchester United’s worrying form continued as they lost 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday evening.

Sadly, it was a poor decision by captain Bruno Fernandes that cost Man United the match against a weaker side that finds themselves wallowing in the relegation zone.

United almost scored seconds after the kick-off, with a ball from Bruno Fernandes skidding across the face of goal. Unfortunately, none of his teammates in the box could get a foot to it.

With less than five minutes on the clock, Leny Yoro was booked for a challenge on Matheus Cunha from behind. An unnecessary yellow card offence by Yoro, who will have to proceed with caution for the rest of the match.

After Amad Diallo was taken down on the right wing, Bruno Fernandes swung in a decent free-kick that the hosts’ defence did well to clear. While United produced some impressive one-touch passing between Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Noussair Mazraoui, they were unable to capitalise as the ball veered out for a goal kick.

15 minutes in, Gonçalo Guedes sprinted into the box, playing a through ball to Jørgen Strand Larsen, only for Andre Onana to catch the pass just in time. United’s defence continued to show signs of discomfort following their poor run of games leading into this evening’s match.

Three minutes later, Wolves players were running circles around United, with Cunha making a breakthrough before being brought down by Fernandes, who was booked for his dirty challenge.

On the stroke of 20 minutes, Diogo Dalot took a thunderous shot from long outside the box, forcing a full-stretch save from the goalkeeper Jose Sa.

25 minutes in, Cunha drilled a cross to Larsen, who directed his close-range header into the ground. Onana did brilliantly to tip the shot around the post for a corner, which United managed to defend successfully.

Three minutes later, Mainoo laid the ball off to Dalot on the edge of the box, whose effort was deflected out for a corner. Better attacking pressure from United.

Fernandes was brought down in the final third, winning United a free-kick. The skipper’s cross was a good one, finding Dalot at the far post, whose header was directed to Lisandro Martinez. The centre-back produced a promising header that was saved by the Wolves keeper. That was United’s best scoring opportunity so far.

10 minutes before the break, Rayan Aït-Nouri produced a threatening through ball that glanced across the face of goal. While Onana made the decision to leave the ball, he was lucky as no Wolves players were positioned close enough to make the most of what was a deadly pass.

In the 39th minute, Nelson Semedo took a lethal long-range shot, which took a deflection before straying just inches wide of the post. The home side were inching closer to breaking the deadlock.

Amad then got on the end of a long ball, taking a shot that the defender did well to block.

The referee blew the whistle after one minute of stoppage time, bringing an end to what was a somewhat bland first half of football. United lacked intensity in the final third – an area they will need to improve in so as to come away with what should be a straightforward win.

Barely two minutes into the second half, Fernandes made his second ill-timed tackle of the match, a late challenge on Semedo. He earned a second yellow card and, with it, his marching orders. While a seemingly harsh call by the ref, this complicated life for United.

A minute later, Wolves appeared to have scored when Semedo crossed to Larsen, who tapped the ball into the net. VAR was then called into play due to an offside claim.

Fortunately for United, the goal was deemed offside, meaning the game remained level.

Then, Wolves sparked another attack, with Larsen’s shot being confidently saved by Onana, only for the home side to be flagged offside yet again.

After 54 minutes, Ugarte received a questionable yellow card, United’s fourth of the evening, counting Fernandes’ two bookings.

In the 58th minute, the stadium erupted. In a moment of brilliance, Cunha scored directly from a corner, curling his cross into the back of the net. United’s defending of corners has continued to be shambolic. Something needs to be done on Amorim’s end to rectify this reoccurring issue.

With a little less than 30 minutes to play, Amorim made a triple change. Antony replaced Leny Yoro, Casemiro came on for Mainoo, and Christian Eriksen replaced Manuel Ugarte.

In the 68th minute, Casemiro got on the end of a threatening long ball, heading the ball goalward to force a save. A rare positive movement from United. Hopefully, the fresh subs can help to build some momentum.

A minute later, Antony expertly cut into the centre of the pitch, taking a threatening shot from outside the box that veered just wide.

With little over 10 minutes of regular time left, Alejandro Garnacho replaced Amad while Joshua Zirkzee came on for Hojlund.

Casemiro lobbed the ball to Garnacho, whose header floated ever so slightly over the crossbar. United may yet find a late equaliser.

Eight minutes of added time were announced, giving United ample time to find a late equaliser.

United earned a free kick when Garnacho was brought down by Matt Doherty on the wing. Eriksen whipped in a threatening cross, which was headed out for a corner.

At the death, Wolves made the most of their one-man advantage, catching United on the break. Tommy Doyle threaded a long ball to Cunha, who, together with Hwang Hee-chan, went two-on-one with the keeper. Cunha passed the ball to Hwang, who buried the ball into an open net.

2-0, the match ended as Amorim and his players made their way down the tunnel following a humiliating performance. Life at Old Trafford is quickly starting to look dire for the new United manager.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Fernandes, Hojlund, Yoro, Amad, Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo
Subs: Antony, Casemiro, Eriksen, Garnacho, Zirkzee

Manchester United suffered a 2-0 away defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 3 – Another shaky performance. Not strong enough for Wolves’ opener, when Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner-kick.

Leny Yoro 5 – Received an early booking for bringing Cunha down while he was charging at the United goal but other than that he was mostly fine.

Harry Maguire 6 – Some good clips out to the wide players. Embarked on one or two surges forward. Some good battles with Strand Larsen. Didn’t do an awful lot wrong.

Lisandro Martinez 6 – Mostly the same as Maguire. A couple of good defensive moments and his passing out from the back was smooth as is usually the case.

Noussair Mazraoui 5 – Created an early opening. Found himself with space down the right on a few occasions but he didn’t do much with it.

Manuel Ugarte 7 – Busy in midfield again. Injected lots of energy and won most of his duels and challenges. Oddly among the first to be substituted yet again.

Kobbie Mainoo 4 – Another below-par performance by his extremely high standards. Some sloppy passes and touches, resulting in United losing possession. Also didn’t offer nearly enough going forward. Seems like he’s struggling to find his natural place under Amorim.

Diogo Dalot 7 – United’s primary source of threat, especially during the opening 45 minutes. Had at least two cracks at goal although he didn’t hit the target. Much better at left-wing-back compared to how he has performed in recent weeks. His involvement in forward areas during the second half was limited, mostly as a result of United going a man down.

Amad Diallo 5 – Started brightly but faded as the match proceeded. Appeared to be holding the width more and played closer to the touchline.

Bruno Fernandes 1 – Got sent off early in the second half after receiving a second booking for a reckless challenge. Left his teammates with a mountain to climb and unsurprisingly, it was all downhill from there. Very poor even before he was given his marching orders and kept losing the ball under little pressure. Not shocking that Ruben Amorim completely blanked him as he walked away.

Rasmus Hojlund 2 – Another nothing performance. Completely bullied by Wolves’ defenders and he never once got into the game.

              Substitutes

Antony 6 -Very involved as he slotted into a right-wing-back position. Tried to make things happen albeit unsuccessfully.

Casemiro 6 – Decent when he came on.

Christian Eriksen 6 – Brought some degree of control. Excellent set-piece deliveries.

Alejandro Garnacho 3 – Shocking for Wolves’ second goal.

Joshua Zirkzee 5 – No impact whatsoever. A useless substitution.

Chelsea take ridiculous transfer stance over frozen-out £40m player before Maresca forgets everyone

Chelsea will demand a massive fee for one of their outcasts after Enzo Maresca told Carney Chukwuemeka to “come knock on my door” and ask to join West Ham.

Since signing for £20m in summer 2022, Chukwuemeka has made 32 appearances but started just four times.

The England youth international has not made a single Premier League matchday squad this season and played barely over 100 minutes in the Europa Conference League and Carabao Cup.

Maresca confirmed last week that he expects some players to force the issue over their futures ahead of the January transfer window, with Chukwuemeka among them,

“There are players who unfortunately didn’t play a lot with us in all the competitions, like Chilwell, like Carney, and probably they are the first who want to leave because they work every day,” the Chelsea coach said.

“They train every day, because they want to play games.

“And if they don’t play games, probably they are thinking to leave. But then we will see. With each player, it’s a different situation.

“We’re going to see if some of them come knock on my door to say they want to leave, but it depends. We try to find a solution.”

Among those could obviously be a sale but the belief is that Chelsea would demand £40m for a reserve player most have forgotten the existence of.

That has ‘deterred’ some suitors, with West Ham mentioned and Strasbourg hilariously ‘considered favourable’ by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

The French club, battling relegation in Ligue Un, ‘play a similar style and system to Maresca under their coach Liam Rosenior’. And the best of luck to Chelsea in getting a £40m sale of a £20m asset to their sister club through a Fair Market Value assessment.

Maresca might be more focused on matters of form after Chelsea followed up their draw at Everton by losing at home to Fulham; three of a possible ten substitutes were used in those matches so Chukwuemeka shouldn’t be too frustrated about not making the bench.

“I think it’s just a game that unfortunately we lost,” he said. “Now it is just a matter of recovering energy and go again in three days.

“I said many times not because we win or lose a game that we are ready or not ready. It is the feeling we have inside. The reality for us. This is the reason why the best thing we can do is just focus on game by game and see the things we need to improve.”

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has brutally ripped into Marcus Rashford, slamming the forward’s inconsistency and lack of motivation.

Rashford has been left out of the last few United matchday squads by Ruben Amorim amidst ongoing speculation over his future at the club.

Last week, the England international spoke to journalist Henry Winter and revealed that he is ready to leave United in search of greener pastures.

Rashford has struggled for form since an excellent 2022/23 season in which he plundered a career-high 30 goals across all competitions. Since then, he has only managed 12 Premier League goals across one-and-a-half campaigns.

There has been a lot of debate regarding Rashford and Foster became the latest to weigh in on his situation.

Speaking on his Cycling GK podcast [via The Daily Mail], Foster pointed out, “Marcus Rashford…There’s so many people that talk about him that say ‘on his day, on his day.’”

“His day is once every 10 games. Genuinely, it’s once every 10 games and you can’t have a luxury player in the modern game that will give you one game out of 10, it’s as simple as that. ”

“Coupled with the fact that he gets so much reputation and baggage and everything that comes with it, I don’t think Mikel Arteta wants that anywhere near that Arsenal.”

“He has to get away from Manchester United. I think it’ll be an MLS (move) or something. It’s going to have to be a massive wage cut.”

Foster added, “Once that fire goes, can you get that back? It has to come from him. I don’t think he can get it back.”

“Again, you’re talking about money which does really ruin everything lads. Once people have that massive contract and they’ve got that five years in the bank and they’ve got everything they’ll ever need for the rest of their life, that takes it (that fire) away.”

“They were talking £40m you know as well. Even 10, I ain’t paying £10m… because of everything.”

As Rashford’s exclusion from Amorim’s squads persists, the likelihood of his departure from Old Trafford in January appears to grow.

Confirmed United XI vs Wolves: De Ligt on bench, Rashford not in squad, Yoro starts

Marcus Rashford is once again omitted from the Manchester United matchday squad for today’s Premier League clash against Wolves.

Rashford’s future at the club is in doubt as he has now been left out of four consecutive matchday squads by manager Ruben Amorim.

Alejandro Garnacho, who was also left out of the squad four matches ago, seems to have repaired the manager’s faith in him to some extent but he starts on the bench again today.

Rasmus Hojlund is up front, with Amad at right forward.

Bruno Fernandes captains the side and plays in one of the forward positions, probably left, with Amad Diallo taking up the right berth.

Matthijs de Ligt has recovered from the illness that saw him miss the last two matches but he has to make do with a spot on the bench.

The back three are Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Manu Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo are the midfield duo, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui the wing backs.

                    Andre Onana is in goal.

Joining Garnacho and De Ligt on the bench are Altay Bayindir, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Toby Collyer, Antony and Josh Zirkzee.

Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof and Mason Mount are all out injured. Tyrell Malacia has been omitted from the squad.

Kick off at Molineux is at 5.30pm GMT.

Manchester United have lost back-to-back games since a thrilling Manchester derby win, with the pressure firmly back on Ruben Amorim.

However, the media do not seem to care about the team’s on-pitch exploits with all the headlines being dominated by Marcus Rashford’s future.

All the questions leading up to the Boxing Day encounter against Wolves also centred around the Mancunian and it is clear that he is becoming a distraction, with the dressing room far from pleased with his infamous interview.

The Red Devils would like to find a permanent solution to the problem but INEOS are currently holding out for £50 million to £60 million.

                      Rashford’s future

That figure coupled with the England international’s humongous £375,000 per week wages (as per capology) means not too many team can afford the England international in January.

As previously relayed by The Peoples Person, the United No 10 dreams of a move to La Liga with Barcelona seen as a particularly enticing proposition.

But SPORT have now revealed that for a deal to occur, not only would United need to reduce their asking price but also the player would need to halve his wages.

“The priority for the English winger would be to leave England and play in the Spanish League. And there his preferred destination is Barça.

“United are willing to sell him for less than 40 million euros, but his salary rises to more than 17 million net, a figure that no one in Spain can afford.

Barca want Rashford to halve his wage demands

“Barça are aware of the situation but have not made any move for this player. They understand that Rashford has enormous quality and his game would adapt to what the team needs, but it would only be viable to sign him if his salary was reduced by half, something they consider impossible.”

This is exactly why the club hierarchy are open to a loan exit in the winter, similar to what they did with Jadon Sancho when he rejoined Borussia Dortmund.

A straight loan could see Rashford regain his form and thereby drawing in more suitors while also enhancing his value, or that is what INEOS are hoping for.

A loan deal could suit the Catalans while Atletico Madrid have also expressed their interest in a temporary move for the Englishman. A clearer picture will emerge once the window opens on January 1.
