United suffered a third consecutive defeat across all competitions on Thursday evening at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan condemned United to a 2-0 loss at Molineux.

For almost the entire second half, the Red Devils were reduced to 10 men after Fernandes was shown a red card for a second bookable offence.

That was the third time this season that the Portugal international has been given his marching orders. After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim spoke to reporters and admitted that he has been left frustrated by the incidents.

Amorim will also not be able to call on the services of Ugarte, who picked up his fifth yellow card of the league season in the game against Wolves.

Ugarte was booked in the second half for bringing down Goncalo Guedes as Wolves looked to break. Moments later, the Uruguayan was taken off and replaced by Christian Eriksen.

Despite United’s struggles on the pitch over the past few weeks, Ugarte has performed at a consistently good level and he will be sorely missed when the Magpies make their way to Old Trafford.

With Fernandes and Ugarte both out, Amorim’s midfield options are very limited, with Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen likely to get the nod in the middle of the park.

Casemiro and Eriksen came on as substitutes vs. Wolves and tried to make things happen albeit unsuccessfully.

Mainoo started the game but didn’t really have the best of games.

United take on Eddie Howe’s men on Monday. Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.

Ex-Man Utd winger already ‘tired’ of Amorim names alternative manager INEOS should’ve appointed

      ex-man-utd-winger-already-‘tired’-of-amorim-names-alternative-manager-ineos-should’ve-appointed

A former Manchester United winger has hit out at head coach Ruben Amorim after the Premier League giants suffered a 2-0 loss against Wolves on Boxing Day.

Amorim left Sporting Lisbon to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd last month after the Dutchman was sacked following their dire start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The 39-year-old may already regret this decision as his job at Man Utd is perhaps bigger than he initially realised. There were positive signs from his opening couple of matches, but they have lost three games in a row since their dramatic comeback win against Manchester City.

The Red Devils are alarmingly close to the relegation zone as Amorim has lost five of his first ten games in charge in all competitions.

After the defeat to Wolves, Amorim admitted that they just need to “survive” this season.

READ: Man Utd ‘going down’ and Ruben Amorim could be sacked before summer

He said: “In this moment, we just have to survive and to win some time to work on the team.

“We already knew it. I start this job and you start with the team, a new idea, without any time to train, with a lot of games, tough games.

“We already knew it, so it’s a long journey, like I said in the first day. We have to continue, and we have to fight these bad moments because this is part of football.”

Former England international Gordon Hill – who made over 100 appearances for Man Utd in the 1970s – has hit out at Amorim, claiming the head coach “complicates the game”.

Hill tweeted: “I am tired of hearing about new systems, you have 11 v 11, simple, attack as much as you can. and defend them from scoring.

“Why do these coaches complicate the game, as I said before Football is a simple game complicated by coaches. please don’t reply to this. I have had it.”

Unfortunately for Hill, X is X, so he did get plenty of replies. After a user suggested Man Utd should have stuck with Erik ten Hag, he responded: “We should have let Ruud have it.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy returned to Man Utd in the summer as he became Ten Hag’s assistant. He was subsequently named interim boss while they waited for Amorim’s arrival.

The 48-year-old did an admirable job of steadying the ship as his side was unbeaten in four matches and won three of these games.

Ahead of Amorim’s appointment, Van Nistelrooy indicated that he would like to remain at Man Utd. However, he has managerial aspirations of his own and his presence could have given the new head coach a headache if there were too many strong voices in the dressing room.

After leaving Man Utd, Van Nistelrooy attracted interest from several Premier League and European sides before being appointed by Leicester City. He is up against it as the relegation candidates – like United – have lost three straight matches.

Agent in Manchester to explore new club for £50m midfielder, United could get him for free in January – report

        agent-in-manchester-to-explore-new-club-for-50m-midfielder,-united-could-get-him-for-free-in-january-–-report

Manchester United are keenly monitoring the situation of Dani Olmo who could be available on a free transfer in January, as per reports.

Olmo made plenty of headlines during the summer, as he played an instrumental role in Spain’s Euro 2024 win. He was one of the best players in the competition, having scored three goals and registered two assists in just six appearances.

The Spanish playmaker carried his form into this season after joining Barcelona from RB Leipzig in a deal believed to be worth £50 million.

Olmo’s return to his boyhood club was far from smooth as Barca could reportedly only register him on a temporary arrangement until the end of the calendar year, owing to La Liga’s financial constraints and the club’s precarious situation.

That did not have any impact on the 26-year-old’s performances. He has six goals and an assist to his name in 15 appearances across all competitions.

Capable of playing out wide and as an attacking midfielder through the middle, Olmo has impressed with his movement and ability to link up with his teammates in the final third under Hansi Flick.

However, according to the Daily Mail, his future at Camp Nou is uncertain heading into the winter transfer window, as Barcelona continue to struggle to “register the dynamic Spain international with LaLiga ahead of the January 1 deadline.”

The outlet claims that Olmo’s agent Andy Bara arrived in Manchester today as Premier League clubs look to take advantage of the situation. As things stand, the Catalan giants are blocked from registering their star player.

He will be allowed to leave the club as a free agent if “Spain’s football federation continue to block his registration for the second part of the season as they push for the Catalan giants to make more cuts, find more revenue and comply with their financial guidelines.”

The Blaugrana’s battle to register their player has “alerted” Premier League clubs, including United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

It is added that Olmo’s priority is to continue in Barcelona but his situation has forced his agent to start exploring potential moves.

The Spaniard is one of the best wide creators in Europe and would certainly do well in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3, just behind the striker.

Interestingly, the La Liga outfit have been linked with Marcus Rashford, who appears to have fallen out of favour under the new gaffer.

This version of Man Utd is relegation struggler bad; that defeat to Wolves was extraordinary. There’s little to no hope.

          Man Utd getting relegated
It’s 55 minutes into the Wolves game and United are down to ten and didn’t look like scoring anyway. A Wolves win is inevitable.

Amorim’s record from seven league games will now be won two, drawn one, lost four. Ten Hag’s record from his last seven games was won two, drawn two, lost three. We are officially worse under Amorim than we were under Ten Hag. There’ll be some genius that points to xg or something but I bet this xg against Wolves doesn’t go above 0.5.

I don’t necessarily blame the new manager. I do think he’s making more of this “I don’t have any time to train anyone” problem than he should be. I get that you’ve not had the pre season that most other managers will have had but you took the job mate. Carry on like this and you won’t last the season. I do hope it doesn’t carry on like this though.

The only way I’d advocate for Amorim being sacked is if it looked like we would go down with him at the helm. At the moment I have confidence that he will turn it around once he gets more time on the training field, but that’s not based on any evidence just faith. INEOS can’t sack him before the end of the season, they’ll look even more like they don’t know what they’re doing and have even more money to pay out absolutely buggering our profit and sustainability. You’d have to be nuts to pay £66 to watch this rubbish so no idea where they’d recoup the money from.

They’ve absolutely f***ed up 2024 and my faith in them doing anything good in the long term is rapidly diminishing. Jim talks about United being mediocre but everything he’s done so far are the actions of a mediocre man with no imagination. He shouldn’t have got involved in a protracted move for Dan Ashworth. Having done so, he then shouldn’t have sacked him so quickly. He should’ve got someone decisive in to either sack Ten Hag in the summer and bring in the right manager for pre season or written the year off as the club is reset.

As it is, the season is a write-off anyway and we seem more of a mess on and off the pitch as ever before. The biggest mistake was hiring a manager who plays 3-4-3 with a squad built for 433 (allegedly). We’ve had probably too many players who play on the left for years and then as soon as we sign Amorim, none of those players fit in the system. Maybe Amorim is the man for the long term and they will build a squad for him. I’m happy with that but bugger me it’s going to be (more) painful for the next two or three years.

Our best player since Fergie left has fallen off a cliff this year and been sent off three times (one overturned). Yet he remains our most important player. Our best home grown player in a number of decades has given up. We’ve got loads of players that are either over the hill or too young to rely on consistently. We’ve got Antony. We can’t defend set pieces. We can’t defend. We can’t shoot and quite often we can’t even create chances. We’ve lost the last two against Bournemouth and Wolves without scoring. We don’t have any money for players in January. Next three games are Newcastle, Liverpool and Arsenal.

F*** it lads, we’re going down. Might as well sell everyone and play the kids.
Ashmundo (lost 2-0 with an xg for of 0.35)

This is the absolute worst Man Utd team
I have been supporting this club for over 25 years now. I have seen its ups and downs. From the moment Sir Alex left, we have faced some difficult times. With Moyes, Van Gaal, Jose and Ole, all having found some success, also led us to some dark moments. Even during the darkest of those moments, I have always felt that we rise back up. Never once felt that United were bottom-half team. Rather a top team, and club, being badly managed and run.

On Thursday something changed. Something broke. For the first time ever, I feel like this squad is bottom half, relegation battlers. Not even a mid table side that can hope for European slots. It just hurts so much. ETH is partly to blame but the rot runs deep.

I, for the first time ever, fear for the future of this club. I don’t see even a slimmer of hope for our revival.

It’s just a sad sad time to be a United fan.

          Regards

Solanke is rare bright Spurs spark
Thoroughly enjoyed the self loathing that came with the early season predictions revisited. It’s a good day for it, right. I woke up this morning determined to consume nothing but water and cucumber today. Maybe lettuce.

Anyways, in it you mentioned that the jury was still out on Solanke. Which is fair. Any striker who’s been in the Premier League as long as he has, who’s in his prime and costs 50m+ needs a strike rate of at least 50% surely.

But Solanke and Kulu are the only things that aren’t really pi$$ing me off about Spurs at the moment. Enough said on Ange. And Voldemort. And Werner. Sonny isn’t impacting games like he used too. Johnson shone bright and got dropped. The youngsters aren’t for various reasons being allowed to show their potential. It’s beyond our coaches to get the best from Sarr. Who’s awesome. Bissouma lives on the edge of a brain fart. Romero would rather be elsewhere. Maddison’s wildly unserious goal celeb overrides any positive contributions. Of which there has been a few actually. Shout out to Porro for his endless running.

Solanke is the only thing that resembles a plan. He suits Ange’s style. He’s a magnet for defenders. He makes wingers look good. He has a nasty habit of not getting in the right position when close to goal but otherwise, it’s a thumbs up from a seriously disgruntled fan base. And he’ll run all day.

I left the Liverpool game after an hour. And couldn’t give a monkeys what anyone thinks about that. When I looked at my phone and saw that the 2nd and 3rd goals meant a goal and assist for Solanke, it made total sense. Did I mention he runs and runs and runs. I guess being a striker in a Postecoglou team is a pretty nice place to be. As opposed an 18 yo CB playing out of position behind Bissouma in his first PL season!? So…keep doing what you’re doing Dominic. Not totally a shining star but a reason to be cheerful in a most uncheerful of seasons.

          All the best,
          Andrew

Ps Fair play to Nuno on his achievements so far. Those twinkling eyes are going to be shining very bright in his post match interview on Final Score later.

          Hopefully a quiet Spurs week
Another loss from a bottom-half side. At least this time we don’t have to hear about how crraaazzy and zanny they are in losing. They’re just sh!t. Add a quick couple of lines to the bottom of Winners and Losers for Spurs and move on to other far more interesting topics.

I actually agree with an article on F365!
I read the article on Ange Postecoglou and his battle against the pragmatists last night and it got me thinking about what my favourite version of my chosen team (Man City) I liked the most in my 40 years of life.

Now I do enjoy many aspects of the game of football, defence, solidity, game management etc, but I do believe in the sentiment of that article that football is at its peak when no f**ks are given. This is because when I look back, and I’ve been truly spoilt by the generational football by City in recent years, which is my favourite ever season? 2001/02. Winning the First Division by playing some of the most carefree, fun and wild football I’ve witnessed. Coming from a manager long considered to be the Godfather of such things and a likely inspiration to the likes of Ange Postecoglou, Kevin Keegan.

The football that season was absolutely bloody brilliant. It is probably something only a City fan could truly appreciate fully, but even so, you could just feel the fun and the exhilaration in the way we played. You felt GOOD watching it even though you knew it could easily end up going sideways. Berkovic and Benarbia playing like prime Xavi and Iniesta (yeah yeah I know and I don’t care) and the Goat banging goals in for fun off various parts of his body. It was the dictionary definition of we will score one more than you, and I loved it. Yeah the prestige may not have been there, we were still the joke team in Manchester, it was the league below the elite bla bla bla. But still to this day, by far my most enjoyable season.

Now of course, that’s easy to say when we won it clear by 10 points with 100+ in total, but I honestly believe I’d still have enjoyed it just as much with a few more defeats thrown in there.

So to Spurs fans, be careful what you wish for next because for good or bad, that kind of football doesn’t come around very often. Embrace it, and ride it as long as you can.
          Marc, Bolton

          Ange in!
I’d say Tottenham should keep Ange Because we are more alive then ever with him! And eventually we’ll win cups.
          Linzay Joy

…Every time Spurs perform poorly, there is loud cry for the manager to be sacked. But, plainly, it is the directors who should be sacked, for total lack of ambition for the club’s success.

Frustrated” Amorim makes shocking admission about United as he insists Europe is firmly out of the question

            frustrated”-amorim-makes-shocking-admission-about-united-as-he-insists-europe-is-firmly-out-of-the-question

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has insisted that his side must enter survival mode after suffering a third straight defeat across all competitions, this time at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes’s red card for a second booking gave Wolves the advantage, with Matheus Cunha scoring directly from a corner.

Cunha then teed up substitute Hwang Hee-chan to wrap up a 2-0 win deep in stoppage time as Amorim’s 10th match in charge ended in a fifth defeat, leaving United in 14th position in the Premier League table.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to reporters in his press conference and was asked whether the Red Devils needed to be concerned by teams below them.

He said, “Yes. In this moment we have to survive and have some time to work on the team. We already knew it when I start this job and you start with a team in the new idea and without any training and just in the games.”

“We already knew it and it is a long journey like I said in the first day and we have to continue. We have to fight in these bad moments because this is football.”

On whether United can still dream of clinching Europa, he replied, “No, no, no. We have to work on a lot of things in our club., inside the pitch and outside of the pitch, in each game and use every minute of training and game to improve the team.”

On how long it takes to make a positive mark, Amorim stated, “I have no idea. Instead of thinking about how much time I need to take, I have to just take it day by day, try and see the videos, using every minute of training to try and [help] us win some points. That is the most important thing in this moment.”

On whether he’s worried about Fernandes following a third red card of the season, Amorim told reporters, “I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always want to go for the ball. It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also.”

Amorim further said about his team’s performance, “I think in the first half the game was not controlled, but we lack a little bit of aggression in the final third. In the second half we talk in the dressing room, [we] tried something different and we got the sending off.”

“Then the set piece is the same against Tottenham. After that I think we tried, by not playing very well, to score one goal. We were near the goal more than when Wolves scored the second one. We couldn’t score and then the last goal doesn’t matter because we are desperately trying to score a goal.”

“The idea needs time, I know that I said it before [to] you guys that this will be a tough moment and we are far from the end of this moment. That is it and we have we have to continue in this moment and focus on the next game.”

When it was put to him that the players might be worse than he initially thought, Amorim remarked, “I manage but I didn’t train. They need time to change as they are changing completely and the way of playing is hard on them and it is also hard on the staff as well to pass all the information on. ”

“Then when you do not get the results that is even harder. We have to believe and we have to continue. It is a tough moment and we have to focus on the next game.”

United are back in action on Monday when they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at Old Trafford.

“Strong chance” PSG striker will seek Premier League move in January as United make interest known – report

              “strong-chance”-psg-striker-will-seek-premier-league-move-in-january-as-united-make-interest-known-–-report

Manchester United transfer target Randal Kolo Muani is looking increasingly likely to depart Paris Saint-Germain in January.

Last month, The Peoples Person noted a report claiming that Man United made contact with PSG to express their interest in signing the striker.

It didn’t take long, however, for other clubs to follow suite. Arsenal and Manchester City allegedly registered their interest in Muani, with a loan move on the cards if reports are to be believed.

While United have been linked with many long-shot transfers, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the 26 year old is almost guaranteed to depart the French capital as he struggles to attain game time at PSG, thereby indicating that a move to Old Trafford may be possible.

This update was all but confirmed by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany with his latest update on the matter.

“Randal Kolo Muani is set to leave @PSG_inside during the winter transfer window. Concrete talks with potential teams about a loan deal are ongoing. PSG would like to include an obligation to buy,” his X post read.

“Currently, there is a strong chance he will move to the Premier League.”

“Understand Liverpool have gathered information, but nothing further has happened yet. Manchester United are monitoring the situation, but #MUFC do not currently expect a transfer to happen in January. Tottenham and RB Leipzig are interested. More teams keen on him.”

              — Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) December 25, 2024

Given the interest in Muani expressed by such a vast variety of Premier League clubs, Ruben Amorim would be in for a tough time should he decide to enter a bidding war for the French striker sensation.

Still, a fight for Muani could prove well worth it if his form in the 2022/23 season for Eintracht Frankfurt is to be take into account.

Muani provided 15 goals and 14 assists in 32 Bundesliga matches that season, while scoring six goals in as many DFB-Pokal games, not to mention three assists. (Transfermarkt)

But even as Muani’s talent speaks for itself, Amorim may need to tread lightly in the upcoming transfer window should reports of his tight transfer budget prove valid.

14x possession lost, 77% duels lost, 0 shots: United superstar looks like a shadow of his former self in Amorim’s system

Manchester United lost their third game in a row in all competitions, with Wolverhampton Wanderers winning their Premier League encounter 2-0 at the Molineux Stadium on Thursday.

Ruben Amorim has now managed only seven points from a possible 21 and has even fewer points in his first seven games than former manager Erik ten Hag accrued in his final seven games.

The Portuguese’s 3-4-3 system does not look like it will work in Manchester with the current squad just not good enough to carry out his instructions.

He either needs to compromise to a certain extent or else a relegation scrap could be on the cards for the second half of the campaign.

Bruno let the team down vs Wolves

Bruno Fernandes, the saviour of the team under previous managers, looks like the biggest mismatch in his system and against Wolves, he let his teammates down.

He had already seen a yellow in the first half but he proceeded to make a rash challenge in the first minute after the restart and as a result, he received his marching orders and his team were down to 10 men.

During his 47 minutes stay on the pitch, the captain lost possession a mammoth 14 times and it looked like the Wolves players had received specific instructions to press as soon as the 30-year-old got on the ball.

He won only 23 percent of his duels, and eventually his frustration boiled over and ended up costing the Red Devils the game (stats via sofascore).

The Portugal international managed only 23 passes and only one of his three attempted crosses found a player in red. None of his long balls were successful.

He had zero shots on target and successfully dribbled past his opponent only once out of three attempts. Usually so adept at doing the dirty side of things, Fernandes managed zero clearances and interceptions against the West Midlands side.

Not the perfect fit for Amorim’s style

This was his third red card of the season and he will miss the Newcastle United game on Monday. United might actually be better off without him currently, quite the shocking turnaround for the talisman.

The club captain offers very little in terms of attacking impetus down the left while he lacks the discipline required to operate in a deeper role.

His biggest strengths of spamming through balls every minute seem to have been nullified in Amorim’s system which prioritises control over counter attacking opportunities.

Amorim has a huge call to make moving forward with regards to his skipper’s position the squad. Either allow him to play his game and revert back to the Ten Hag era style or stick with his formation and possibly leave out Fernandes.

“I will continue with…”: Defiant Amorim makes pulsating promise to fans despite embarrassing loss to Wolves

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has blamed his side’s 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Bruno Fernandes’  sending-off.

Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan both found the back of the net in the second half against a 10-man United, after Fernandes was given his marching orders.

The United skipper was booked twice for reckless fouls. When he left the pitch, an angry Amorim completely blanked him, according to Steven Railston of Manchester Evening News.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to reporters [via BBC] and gave his thoughts on the team’s performance and the result.

He said, “It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that.”

“We have to improve the relationships, but we have some moments. We lack a little bit of aggression, but we don’t train. We just play and try to find a better way to win games and that’s it.”

“We can’t control the games like the other ones that we lost. I think we were always in control of the game, not always dominating, but in control of some things, some set-pieces. The sending off was really hard for us.”

When asked about Marcus Rashford – who was left out of the matchday squad for the fourth consecutive game – Amorim replied, “It’s always the same reason it’s going to be. We have to be the same professionals, the same guys, winning or losing. Losing, I have to be stronger. ”

Despite this latest setback, Amorim promised supporters that he will stick to his principles no matter what. He vowed, “I will continue with my idea until the end.”

Amorim added, “Of course, when you lose, when we don’t win, it’s a step back. It was really hard with the sending off. The goal was similar against Tottenham. Then, we tried. Even with one less guy we tried to and I think we were near something but then Wolves scored the second one.”

“Then, in the end, we tried everything and the transition was 2-0. For us, let’s continue.”

Amorim refused to admit whether or not he felt Onana was fouled. He simply said, ” think he cannot go to the ball. He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball but I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”

United return to action on Monday when they host Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were undone by a set piece yet again in tonight’s deflating 2-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Harry Maguire insists “things will change” in that area.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Maguire expressed his frustration at the red card shown to Bruno Fernandes, and pinpointed this as the moment the game changed.

“I felt like we had control in the first half without doing much with it,” he said. “Going into the second half, we needed to up it and the red card changed the game. It’s hard enough playing with 11 men in the Premier League.”

Wolves had the ball in the back of the net within seconds of the United captain’s dismissal, although the goal was chalked off for offside.

But some ten minutes later the hosts did take the lead, as Matheus Cunha’s corner drifted directly over a stranded Andre Onana in an unwelcome repeat of Son Heung-min’s effort for Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup last week.

Pointing to the depressingly regularity with which United concede from set pieces, Maguire said: “Set plays are so important in football matches, they decide games. The first goal has been a set play far too many times against us and it’s disappointing.”

When asked how to sort this out, Maguire’s response was simple: “Work. Work. Work more on the training pitch.”

He added: “I think teams now are maybe targeting our area of set plays and the strange thing is I don’t feel like we’re conceding many chances from them.”

Teams may not be creating chances from set pieces, largely because they are too busy scoring goals from them – United have now conceded 18 goals from set-pieces in 2024.

Returning to tonight’s match, Maguire said: “They’ve had a few set plays tonight and we’ve dealt with them really well and then they’ve gone and scored from one.

“I think [the way to address the issues defending set pieces is] hard work, keep the belief, things will change, I know that.

“We have players who can defend the box well and it will change we’ve just got to stick together.”

Manchester United shambles summed up by pathetic Fernandes and embarrassing Garnacho

                      manchester-united-shambles-summed-up-by-pathetic-fernandes-and-embarrassing-garnacho

There will be talk of Ruben Amorim needing ‘four or five transfer windows to turn things around at Manchester United’ but the embarrassing weeds must be removed before anything is planted.

That there exists an actual group of sentient beings who, when encountered with this shameful iteration of Manchester United, feel compelled to apportion any responsibility on Ruben Amorim is incredible. The way they believe it is in any way normal to have ‘lost faith’ in a coach who responded to this dumpster fire emergency call 45 days ago is astonishing.

The only thing Amorim can possibly be blamed for at this early juncture is his enthusiasm in drinking so readily from a poisoned chalice overflowing with incompetence and ineptitude. From pitch to boardroom, Manchester United are a shuddering shambles of a football club.

“We are going to have difficult moments and we will be found out in some games, I know that,” said Amorim after the 4-0 win over Everton at the start of December. His reiteration that “the storm will come” was translated in most quarters as a typical cliched warning from a coach wanting to keep expectations in check, but Amorim knew his forecast was based on precise information: he had these players bang to rights before he inherited them.

Even in the obscured and foggy Molineux conditions the innumerable faults in this team were clear. Its mere composition is a mess of ideas but wrapped within that are subplots of negligence, individual anecdotes of failure.

Andre Onana, far from their biggest problem, has nevertheless retained an infuriating knack for individual mistakes. Harry Maguire should be commended for his resilience in bouncing back to regain his starting place but the fact he has been able to should embarrass a handful of teammates. Kobbie Mainoo has been leaned on so relentlessly at such a precocious stage in his development as to render him a shadow of his former self. Rasmus Hojlund was breathtakingly anonymous with no support, a clause which has seemingly been written into his contract to prevent any viable alternatives from ever being signed.

Amad has had his brilliance and exuberance neutered in remarkably quick fashion. Alejandro Garnacho similarly once looked like a silver lining to this dark cloud of a club but a humiliating cameo saw him muscled off the ball for the second goal when he was going nowhere. Antony being given meaningful minutes and actually looking like Manchester United’s best forward is a damning indictment on all involved, not least the exiled Marcus Rashford.

Manuel Ugarte was good but received a suspension-incurring fifth booking of the season for needlessly delaying a free-kick, while Leny Yoro impressed in flashes but was also given a yellow after being beaten by Matheus Cunha.

There can be frustration that the man of the match should not really have been playing. That Cunha remains eligible despite quite obviously being in line for some sort of ban after his actions against Ipswich is some fine FA nonsense. But he has maximised his minutes by inspiring victory over Leicester before tormenting Manchester United.

A goal, an assist, as many completed dribbles (four) as the 16 visiting players managed combined and more tackles (four) than all bar Ugarte, Toti Gomes and Andre represented a fine evening’s work even before taking into account it was he who bought the bookings for Yoro and Bruno Fernandes.

A teenage defender with fewer than 70 senior career appearances walked that disciplinary tightrope for more than 90 minutes but the humbled captain of this sorry ship was desperate to jump off the deep end within about half an hour. Any sympathy due to Fernandes for a soft first yellow was rendered moot with a frankly stupid challenge on Nelson Semedo straight after half-time, an additional plan-ruining flourish Amorim would no doubt have greatly appreciated.

The role of a captain is hilariously overblown in the modern game but equally Fernandes being Manchester United’s in 2024 is incredibly apt. Rarely is such an obvious talent undermined by itself out of eagerness to be seen to care. Nowhere else is consistent petulance and a costly temper rewarded so handsomely. Fernandes set his own trap with a dreadful first touch but he was itching to dive in, studs first to Semedo’s leg and ankle, just to show the supporters that he is trying to do something.

Beyond the question as to whether Fernandes fits into the Amorim regime tactically, a conversation must be had to decide if he is a good enough fit temperamentally and in terms of character.

The only unknown from there was how this latest implosion would play out, because Manchester United were struggling with their best creator and 11 men, never mind ten who were willing to run off the ball but had no idea on it.

It was no surprise to see Arsenal’s latest transfer obsession play a starring role. There was a deliberation about the corner Cunha planted over Onana’s head and an unselfishness which defined his square pass for Hwang Hee-chan to finish Manchester United off in stoppage-time.

But those were welcome addendums to the overall package. Cunha was as tireless in defence as he was tremendous in attack. The first half ended with a Manchester United move breaking down when he tracked back to head the ball to a teammate, while second-half stoppage-time started with him relieving increasing pressure by chasing an aimless pass out to the halfway line to win a throw-in from Noussair Mazraoui.

The first-time Cruyff turn to control a high ball from Jose Sa in his own defensive third when facing his own net to evade two players wasn’t half bad either. It was an uncomfortable enough comparison with Fernandes in a similar position before the match-deciding goal and assist.

Wondering whether Cunha is the sort of player Manchester United need to target moving forward is almost pointless because Amorim must remove the weeds before he starts to plant anything here. The rest of this season should be about finding all the problems before considering solutions. This squad has helped get a succession of managers sacked; at some point a line needs to be drawn and the common denominator divided rather than multiplied.

Amorim might be more pragmatic and deploy a system better suited to these players to get results. He could cater to them, identify rounder pegs for these gaping holes, pick based on talent rather than application. There should be little doubt he is capable of a far better record than four wins and five defeats from his first ten games.

But he knew his appointment represented an attempt to break the cycle and required an extended shot of short-term pain in the hope of long-term gain. Amorim expected nothing different and will assess the reaction of these players, although even he might have been caught off guard by how quickly his predicted storm has turned into a shower of shite.
