“What type of stupidness?”: Ferdinand legend rips into United star’s role in last-gasp drama at Anfield

“What type of stupidness?”: Ferdinand legend rips into United star’s role in last-gasp drama at Anfield

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has blasted Joshua Zirkzee’s role in his former side’s last-gasp chance at Anfield.

The Red Devils played incredibly well to get a 2-2 draw at Anfield versus Liverpool but the result could have been even better after Harry Maguire spooned over a chance from close range in the last kick of a pulsating match.

Whilst it is possible a goal may not have stood due to it looking offside, it was a huge let off for the Anfield side.

Of course blame will fall on Maguire for missing such a clear-cut chance to score a winner at Anfield that he will likely never have again.

Nonetheless, the man who provided the pass has also taken on criticism for his role in the huge miss.

Speaking on his YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender laid into the quality of ball that Zirkzee played to Maguire in the dying embers of the match.

Speaking on the chance Rio claimed, “after all of it, I would have gone in the changing room and gone, ‘Bruv, what type of stupidness was that?! What type of pass was that?! We could have won the game!’.”

“But Zirkzee is lacking in confidence so he [Maguire] ain’t going to do that.”

“It’s detail, bro. You know what it’s like? Talk to somebody like you want to be talked to. Pass how you want to receive. Same thing.”

The Dutchman’s December started in the best possible way with two goals at home to Everton but ended in terrible fashion as he was jeered by his own fans after he left the pitch at Old Trafford at home to Newcastle United after just 33 minutes of action.

Since then, it has been reported that Zirkzee’s relationship with Ruben Amorim is at an “all-time low” and he looks to only have the fraction of the confidence he showed for Bologna in Serie A last season.

He has recently been linked to a move to Juventus where he would team up with his former boss Thiago Motta.

Man Utd: Ibrahimovic reveals stance as Milan line up Rashford loan as £365k issue is discussed

AC Milan are lining up a possible loan move for Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford before the end of the January transfer window, according to reports.

After making over 400 appearances for the Red Devils, the England international revealed last month that he is “ready for a new challenge” away from Old Trafford.

It came after he was left out of the Man Utd matchday squad for their 2-1 win over arch-rivals Man City in mid-December with Ruben Amorim choosing to omit Rashford from the next two squads too.

However, he returned to the bench on Monday as Man Utd lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the Premier League before again leaving the England international out in their 2-2 draw against Liverpool, which saw the Red Devils climb one place to 13th in the table.

Rashford has been linked with a move to Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and other clubs abroad with The Guardian now claiming that the Man Utd forward ‘is being targeted by Milan regarding a potential loan’.

The report adds that the potential deal with Milan is ‘dependent on Manchester United paying a sizeable portion of the forward’s salary of about £365,000 a week’.

        The Guardian continues:

‘Whether United are willing to do so is yet to be decided. It is not their preference to provide a considerable percentage of Rashford’s wage, which makes him United’s highest-paid player. But Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who controls football policy, may decide Rashford departing for the rest of the season is in the best interests of all parties, particularly the head coach, Ruben Amorim.’

It is also made clear that Rashford and Amorim have not fallen out but that a similar deal to the one that saw Jadon Sancho leave for Borussia Dortmund last January could be in the offing.

        The report claims:

‘Although Amorim and Rashford have not fallen out, Ratcliffe may decide a similar move would help United to sell the England international in the close season, when he will have three years on his contract. Napoli retain an interest in Rashford but it is understood the United hierarchy would be surprised if it was firmed up with a formal offer’

It comes after a report in Italian website Calciomercato claimed yesterday that Rashford’s former team-mate Ibrahimovic – who is now a senior adviser at Milan – ‘leaves a small door open for Marcus Rashford, a difficult path, very, but not completely impossible.’

Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist insists that he “hopes” Rashford joins PSG in the January transfer window after making it clear he wants to leave.

McCoist told talkSPORT BET: “I really hope that Marcus Rashford’s next club will be PSG. I would be so disappointed if he transferred to the Saudi league or the MLS. He can do that in the years to come. Right now, he should be in the peak of his powers – and it’s not too late for him to reach the top.

“I think Paris would be a good fit for Marcus. There’s a good chance he’d be granted more freedom, and the team would cater to his style of play in comparison to Man Utd. I wouldn’t mind him going to Italy either; there’s a great selection of clubs he can potentially look at. It’ll also give him comfort to see other English players go there and compete in Serie A.”

McCoist added: “Rashford’s next choice of club is of paramount importance in order to progress in his career. He absolutely has to get that decision right – no doubt.

“It’s looks to me that the relationship between Rashford and Manchester United has come to an end. If that’s the case, they should both shake hands amicably and go their separate ways. Then, Rashford must crack on because he owes it to himself and his thousands of fans in order to avoid being remembered as ‘one season wonder’ or only having a good 18-month stint.”

Man Utd: Wayne Rooney tipped for Old Trafford return after Plymouth sacking

Man Utd: Wayne Rooney tipped for Old Trafford return after Plymouth sacking

Former Premier League defender Wes Brown has backed ex-teammate Wayne Rooney for a coaching role at Manchester United after exiting Plymouth last week.

Rooney, 39, managed just seven months in charge of the Championship club and left with the club rooted to the bottom of the league with just four league wins across his tenure.

Similarly, his previous role at Birmingham City ended poorly winning just two of his 15 games while he managed a win percentage of less than 30% across his time at Derby County and DC United.

It is unclear what the future holds for the former five-time Premier League champion, whether it is a return to TV punditry or another managerial or coaching role elsewhere.

Brown has since backed his former teammate to make an impact at Man United where he believes he could make a positive impact as an attacking coach under Ruben Amorim.

“If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach he would be absolutely brilliant at it,” Brown told The Sports Daily. “He was one of the best goalscorers we’ve ever seen and was a top playmaker as well.

“If he wanted to do that he would be very good on movement and things like that, he was one of the best to do it. Could he help Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United? I think all young strikers would love to listen to Wayne and his knowledge.

“When I was a young player I remember getting a few tips from Laurent Blanc and the little things like that can really help. If Wayne was on hand to give out some advice [at United] I’m sure everyone would be willing to listen.”

Following Rooney’s departure from the Championship club, Brown also honestly assessed his sacking and backed him to bounce back in the future. “I thought in some of the close games I saw they were unlucky but this is a results business and they couldn’t find enough wins.

“The owners have decided to go in a new direction but Wayne is the sort of guy to keep his head up and wait to see if another opportunity arises. He’ll be ready to take a new challenge again in no time but of course he’ll be really disappointed as he was so determined to do well there.

“It’s not quite gone to plan but we will have to wait and see, that’s football. Wayne is a good guy and it’s nice to see that they came to an agreement there.

“It definitely helps Plymouth going forward and he would’ve known that. He wanted to do well but it didn’t work out but he is a good human and would hate to put them under any strain in that sense.”

United’s January window could be torpedoed by Juve’s interest in PL striker – report

United’s January window could be torpedoed by Juve’s interest in PL striker – report

Manchester United may miss out on the chance to cash in on Joshua Zirkzee to Juventus as a deal for West Ham United’s Niclas Fullkrug is becoming more appealing to the Italian club.

The Red Devils are in desperate need to improve their attacking options as they lie 13th in the Premier League table.

United have struggled to score goals all season and cannot rely on Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee to regularly find the back of the net.

This means that Ruben Amorim’s side have been linked to numerous attacking options such as Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, Randal Kolo Muani and Dusan Vlahovic.

To complete any deal they will likely need to sell or loan certain players and one such option is Joshua Zirkzee, who Juventus have recently shown interest in.

However, Calciomercato report that perhaps there is another Premier League striker who might be a more attractive option for the Old Lady to pursue.

The Italian’s were linked to Niclas Fullkrug in the summer before he completed his move to West Ham and they have turned their attention once again to the German international.

“The German had arrived in London for 27 million euros but competition and injuries soon transformed his first adventure in the Premier League into an ordeal.”

What’s more, “Juve is following Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain and Zirkzee from Manchester United but, unlike the first two, Fullkrug could move on loan or with “only” a right of redemption.”

This is a formula that appeals to Juventus as it gives them more financial flexibility than other deals, as United would likely insist that any loan deal for Zirkzee has an obligation to buy attached.

It is suggested by the Italian outlet that he is looking for a “jump in quality” that Juve would provide and that he “wouldn’t say no” to a move to Serie A.

United will be paying close attention to any such deal as their own attacking signings will likely be determined by who they can sell or loan themselves this winter and would likely be betting on Juventus following through on their interest in Zirkzee.

United star in line for eye-watering pay rise if he departs this January – report

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro could be in line to earn an eye-watering £650,000 a week should he make a move to Saudi Arabia this winter.

Despite an improved start to the season and successful period under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, Casemiro has been phased out of the team lately.

New manager Ruben Amorim has preferred a midfield duo of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

The Brazilian was recalled to the starting line up to face Newcastle United but his performance was largely criticised.

It has previously been reported that the Red Devils are looking to sell the Brazil international this window and that he is open to a such a move after seeing his gametime diminish lately.

TalkSPORT report that another reason that the former Real Madrid man could be so interested in a move is the huge wage increase he is in line for.

“The TV rights for the Saudi Pro League is up for renewal later this year and is expected to provide a major financial boost for clubs across the board, which is why Al Nassr are ready to move.”

“It is understood Al Nassr would be willing to make Casemiro one of the league’s top five highest earners, such is their willingness to secure a deal.”

The 32 year old currently makes an impressive £350,000 a week at Old Trafford but it is believed that his salary could rocket to £650,000 a week in Saudi Arabia.

It has also been reported that he turned down a £3.2 million signing on fee to join Al Ittihad last summer.

Nonetheless, such a pay increase and the chance to play with former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo may prove too good to turn down.

For United’s part, they would be delighted with such a deal as it has also been stated that the Saudi team would be prepared to pay €30 million to get a deal done.

Such a transfer fee and getting his colossal wages off the books would do wonders for United’s ability to spend in January and give Ruben Amorim’s side the shot in the arm that they so badly need.

Euro giants’ exchange deal means United set to miss out on two major targets in one fell swoop – report

Manchester United could be set to miss out on two attacking targets in the same deal.

The Red Devils are keen to add more firepower to their first eleven in the January window and have been linked to moves for forwards Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres.

Two other players they have been more recently linked to is Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain and Dusan Vlahovic at Juventus.

Incredibly reliable journalist David Ornstein confirmed that United are one of the frontrunners in a deal to bring Kolo Muani to the Premier League this month.

What’s more, United have been linked to a swap deal with Juventus where the Old Trafford side would send Joshua Zirkzee to the Old Lady and they would receive Vlahovic in return.

Calciomercato’s recent report suggests that United could potentially miss out on both deals in one fell swoop.

Juventus have changed course lately and are now prioritising an attacker in this window and while they have been linked to United’s Zirkzee, there is another option that has presented itself.

PSG’s Kolo Muani is unhappy with the number of minutes he is getting at the club and is seeking a move away but Juventus sense an opportunity as PSG sporting director, Luis Campos, has a serious “appreciation towards Dusan Vlahovic.”

The Serbian for his part has been seen as a key member of the Juve squad and they would ideally reach a new deal on lowered terms “but so far every approach has been rejected by the centre forward’s entourage.”

Therefore, Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli “has always worked on the profile of Kolo Muani, hypothesizing a loan operation and possibly with a part of the €8 million net annual salary paid by PSG.”

“A loan exchange with right of redemption is a concrete option, but with only a year and a half to go until Vlahovic’s contract expires, a permanent transfer of the Serbian that would lead to a budget-saving and market-saving cash flow would not be ruled out.”

Such a swap deal could be devastating for United’s plans as they are clearly very interested in at least Kolo Muani and may be relying on Juventus to do a deal for Zirkzee to fund such a move due to the tight financial restrictions they are working under.

Man Utd: ‘Agreement’ in place as third Red Devils star decides to leave in January

Man Utd could allow three players to leave in the January transfer window with Joshua Zirkzee the latest to want out, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible time in the Premier League this season with just six wins in 20 matches meaning they are 13th in the table.

Although Man Utd produced an impressive display to draw 2-2 against arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, Ruben Amorim’s side are still a long way from where they want to be.

One of their biggest problems in the Premier League this season has been scoring goals with only Everton, Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town and Southampton scoring fewer goals than Man Utd.

Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund have all been criticised for not providing the necessary level of firepower to help the Red Devils further up the league.

23-year-old Zirkzee was reportedly ‘reduced to tears’ after Man Utd boss Amorim took him off on 33 minutes in their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle last week with supporters booing him off the pitch.

And Zirkzee, who signed from Bologna in the summer for around £36.5m, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Juventus showing a strong interest.

And now Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via GetFootballNewsItaly) claims that Zirkzee is ‘keen on departing United and the Premier League, as he continues to be frustrated with life in England and at Old Trafford’.

Zirkzee is the latest player to seek a move away from Man Utd in the January transfer window with Rashford admitting he’s ready for a “new challenge”, while Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is also reportedly keen to leave amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

                  The report adds:

‘His agent Kia Joorabchian is actively working on an exit and there is already a basic agreement between Joorabchian and Juve over a move. Contacts have been constant and Juve’s exit from the Supercoppa Italiana could spark more movement, with the Bianconeri keen to improve their squad.

‘An agreement with United will be the only thing needed, with the Red Devils not opening up to a dry loan deal.’

Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor reckons it was “disgusting” from the Man Utd fans to boo Zirkzee off in their match against Newcastle.

Agbonlahor said last week: “I didn’t like it, I thought it was disgusting from some of the Manchester United fans cheering him coming off.

“He’s a young lad, 23, new signing who hasn’t bedded in yet.

Man Utd: £45m Amorim signing, three exits among six kneejerk certainties after Liverpool turning point

Well, that was much more like it from Manchester United...

After a miserable first month in the Old Trafford dugout, Ruben Amorim (and his struggling squad) benefited from a few back-to-back training days as they were unrecognisable at Anfield compared to their dire showing against Newcastle United on Monday night.

The 2-0 scoreline against Newcastle flattered Man Utd and the straight-talking Amorim did not mince his words to the press afterwards, claiming some of his squad are “afraid and anxious” as their shock relegation fears intensified.

Had Man Utd arrived at Anfield with this mindset, they could have been eaten alive by the best team in the Premier League in the hotbed of an intimidating Anfield atmosphere en route to a four-plus goal defeat.

But it appears the pre-match talk surrounding Man Utd’s demise spread into Liverpool’s dressing room; Arne Slot’s massively sub-par players seemingly took a one-sided win for granted, enabling the resurgent visitors to capitalise.

Man Utd’s raised confidence was clear from minute one as they won the midfield battle, were assertive in defence and more threatening in attack – which came via the latest exposé of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

United’s performance in the 2-2 draw (which could have easily been a win) was easily their best of the season and it was more aligned with what the demanding Amorim wants than the embarrassing mess that’s been served up in most of the head coach’s 12 matches.

Amorim was “mad” and Bruno Fernandes was “upset” that this performance level had not been previously seen, so there’s no going back as this Anfield high needs to become the norm, but it’s hard to believe this will happen as United’s ever-underdelivering squad often fail to build on these fleeting showings.

The Liverpool draw has at least provided Man Utd supporters with a blueprint for success under Amorim as certain stars thrive while others falter. Here are six things to be expected as the Red Devils take shape under their new head coach…

Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo as the starting midfielders
When Man Utd bought Ugarte in the summer, it felt inevitable that he and Mainoo would become their starting central midfielders.

This has taken longer than expected as Mainoo has seemingly suffered from burn-out following his immense breakout season and Ugarte gradually settled into Premier League life, but United’s wait paid off on Sunday as the sparkling midfield pair dominated their Liverpool counterparts.

While Alexis Mac Allister was arguably Liverpool’s best player, Mainoo and Ugarte made Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones look pretty ordinary.

It remains the case that Amorim needs signings in several positions to turn United into Premier League title contenders, but the central midfield area is locked down for many years to come with Mainoo and Ugarte.

                    Casemiro and Christian Eriksen leaving
The performances of Mainoo and Ugarte also hammered another nail into Casemiro and Eriksen’s coffin at Man Utd as they near the exit door.

The two leggy midfielders were hung out to dry by Amorim against Newcastle and they unsurprisingly floundered against Eddie Howe’s energetic side on the large Old Trafford turf; it’s night and day when you compare this pair to Mainoo and Ugarte against Liverpool.

The ill-considered Casemiro transfer was one of Erik ten Hag’s biggest failures and it reinforced the view that a team of United’s grandeur need a recruitment team of the ‘best in class’ so they don’t lean on a head coach signing players suited to him more than the club.

The free-spending Saudi Pro League are reportedly willing to spare United’s blushes, while Eriksen – whose transfer has been much less of a disaster – still needs to move on when his contract expires in the summer as the time is right to go separate ways.

Harry Maguire > Matthijs de Ligt
The 3-4-3 system benefits Maguire as he previously shone in this system for England under Gareth Southgate and he’s swiftly become a player the head coach is ‘desperate’ to keep.

Maguire’s performance – barring that late miss – justified this stance as he impressively marshalled United’s defence as the central man with Lisandro Martinez and De Ligt on either side.

The England international has showcased immense staying power; he’s point-blank refused to leave even when his situation appeared bleak. This is paying off as his Man Utd future looks brighter than that of De Ligt, who was the weak defensive link against Liverpool.

A pretty disastrous five minutes from De Ligt contributed heavily to Liverpool turning the match around. With “untouchable” Leny Yoro being eased into the fold, the Netherlands international is currently more likely than Maguire to miss out.

Amad Diallo as the star man
The 2024/25 campaign has been flooded with overwhelming negatives for Man Utd, but Diallo has consistently been a highlight as the overwhelming candidate for their in-house Player of the Year award.

Diallo shone before Amorim’s arrival, but he’s been the big winner of this appointment as he’s been equally impressive as a wing-back or No.10 and increasingly looks a great asset for Man Utd.

The 22-year-old has had his deal automatically extended on the same terms until 2026, but the ongoing long-term contract negotiations are richly deserved for a player who has become United’s star man under Amorim.

                    Joshua Zirkzee leaving
Diallo is the exception, but the attacking department remains a concern for Man Utd, which is not helped by the woeful form of summer signing Zirkzee.

United’s first signing under INEOS (for roughly £34m) has quickly proved a dud as the faltering forward has been exposed as not up to the Premier League task.

It’s been downhill for Zirkzee since he scored on his Premier League debut as his inability to play as a centre-forward (with his lack of pace and poor control) has seen him quickly dismissed as a pointless signing, which leaves United still lacking a suitable alternative to Rasmus Hojlund.

Man Utd signing Zirkzee reeks of INEOS buying the cheap option when far better-suited alternatives could have been acquired instead of kicking the problem down the road. Now, they still need a new striker, while it feels likely that the summer flop will return to Serie A in 2025.

                    Signing Nuno Mendes
Amorim is likely ruing his low budget this month
as he needs to wait until the summer to make significant additions. When this happens, a new left wing-back is expected to top United’s shopping list and Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes – who is rated at £45m on transfermarkt has reportedly been made their ‘main target’.

Alexander-Arnold made Diogo Dalot look like an attacking revelation, but this is a rarity as him and Noussair Mazraoui are usually limited in the opponents’ half.

United can get away with having one defensive-minded wing-back on the pitch, but their attack is held back when Dalot and Mazraoui are on the field at the same time.

Amorim could do with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia as options on the left, but neither can be relied upon to stay fit and Mendes would be a suitable replacement. While he’s capable defensively, he’s far more comfortable in the attacking half than Dalot and Mazraoui. He’ll also be playing in his natural position, which helps.

Mendes – or another similarly suited alternative – would allow Dalot and Mazraoui to compete for a starting birth on the right (and perhaps offer support to Yoro), while Diallo can play there when the game situation suits. It’s a signing that makes too much sense, so surely INEOS will cotton onto it…

                      Jonny Evans

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in making a move this January for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

The Northern Ireland international made a shock return to Old Trafford in 2023 in a move that was widely ridiculed initially.

Evans had the last laugh however as he played 30 times in his first season back at the club and generally did not look out of place as many had predicted.

Nonetheless, this season has seen a considerable reduction in minutes following the summer acquisitions of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

With new manager Ruben Amorim looking to sign his own defenders and talents such as Godwill Kukonki coming through the academy, it appears like this might be the Belfast native’s last season at the club.

The Daily Record report that one club who would potentially be interested in Evans’ services is Rangers.

“Jonny Evans has been suggested by the Rangers board as a possible transfer option to try and help ease their current defensive crisis.”

He “is one name that was suggested to the manager by a member of the club hierarchy. However, the Northern Ireland legend’s age is thought to be putting Phillipe Clement off the idea.”

It is stated that the Rangers boss would prefer to sign a younger profile of player as he already has Leon Balogun in his squad to provide experience.

Former United scout Mick Brown has had his say on a potential move claiming, “If he wants to keep playing, I think a move to Rangers would suit him.”

“They’ve shown some interest and, with all due respect, it would be a move to a less demanding league than the Premier League.”

Evans is clearly not in Amorim’s plans as he has only played in two matches during the Portuguese’s reign and has not started since the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s first game in charge away to Ipswich Town at the end of November.
