Liverpool sneak into top 10 of Premier League points hauls at halfway stage of season

Liverpool have 46 points at the half-way stage of their Premier League season, sitting six points ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table with a game in hand.

But how does that measure up with half-way hauls through the first half of a season since the Premier League was cut to 20 teams in 1995/96? Decently, but they’re no Arsenal 2022/23…

    1) Manchester City 17/18: 55 points
    W18 D1 L0 F60 A12 GD+48 GPG 3.16
    Final position: Champions
Pep Guardiola’s first Premier League title, won with five games to spare, saw City break all kinds of records. Most points (100); most away points (50); most points ahead of second (19); most wins (32); most away wins (16); most goals (106); best goal difference (+79); and most consecutive victories (18).

Is this the best Premier League team ever?

    2) Liverpool 19/20: 55 points
    W18 D1 L0 F48 A14 GD+34 GPG 2.53
    Final position: Champions
Jürgen Klopp’s Reds broke one of City’s records by wrapping up their first title in 30 years with seven games still to go. But it was also the latest coronation – in June 2020 – after Covid turned up and acted the d*ck to spoil Liverpool’s celebrations.

    3) Chelsea 05/06: 52 points
    W17 D1 L1 F41 A9 GD+32 GPG 2.16
    Final position: Champions
The Blues celebrated their centenary by winning their second consecutive title when Jose Mourinho really was ‘a special one’. It was achieved by an eight-point margin over Manchester United, who were also the first side to beat Chelsea on matchday 12.

    4) Liverpool 18/19: 51 points
    W16 D3 L0 F43 A7 GD+36 GPG 2.26
    Final position: Runners-up
Liverpool were better off than Arsenal four years later, and still f***ed it. They didn’t lose until matchday 21 at Manchester City, which proved all-important since despite not losing again all season, they were still pipped at the post by City, with four draws in six games between the end of January and beginning of March also crucial.

    5) Arsenal 22/23: 50 points
    W16 D2 L1 F45 A16 GD+29 GPG 2.36
    Final position: Runners-up
Arsenal reached the halfway mark on 50 points by beating Manchester United 3-2 in a pulsating encounter. But then they picked up just one point from their next three games against Everton, Brentford and most damagingly Manchester City. Seven straight wins would make them favourites again but just three wins in the last nine games of the season completed one of the great bottle jobs.

    6) Chelsea 16/17: 49 points
    W16 D1 L2 F42 A13 GD+29 GPG 2.21
    Final position: Champions
In Antonio Conte’s first season in charge, the Blues equalled the Premier League records for consecutive wins in a season (13); fewest draws (3); fewest home draws (none), and home and away wins against different sides (12). It helped that Diego Costa was largely unplayable.

    7) Manchester City 21/22: 47 points
    W15 D2 L2 F50 A12 GD+38 GPG 2.63
    Final position: Champions
City started quite slowly, losing their opening game to Spurs and then to Palace at the end of October. They didn’t hit the summit until matchday 15, after which they were never unseated, despite Liverpool’s best efforts.

    8) Manchester United 06/07: 47 points
    W15 D2 L2 F41 A10 GD+31 GPG 2.16
    Final position: Champions
United ended what for Sir Alex Ferguson amounted to a title drought by winning their first crown in four seasons, reasserting his authority over Mourinho in the process. The Red Devils eased down the home straight, securing the title with two games to go, winning neither but still finishing with a six-point cushion.

    9) Chelsea 04/05: 46 points
    W14 D4 L1 F38 A8 GD+30 GPG 2.00
    Final position: Champions
Mourinho won his first Premier League title while setting a number of records along the way: most away wins in a season (15); most clean sheets (25); fewest goals conceded away (9); most wins (29); and fewest total goals conceded (15). They still retain the records for most clean sheets and fewest goals conceded.

    10) Liverpool 24/25: 46 points
    W14 D4 L1 F49 A19 GD+28 GPG 2.47
    Final position: We shall see
There has been only one defeat in Arne Slot’s first half-season as a Premier League manager – at home to Nottingham Forest before we realised how good Nottingham Forest were – but four high-scoring draws have given the chasing pack some reason to believe.

Wayne Rooney to Man City mooted as he’s backed for Man Utd return in ‘very important role’

Wayne Rooney has been advised to take a position at Manchester City, while he could return to Manchester United in a “very important role”.

The Man Utd legend is out of work as he was sacked by Championship club Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Eve.

Rooney had spells at Derby County, DC United and a dire stint at Birmingham City before he was appointed by Plymouth ahead of this season.

The 39-year-old had a difficult task at Plymouth as they would have been favourites for relegation with or without Rooney.

Under the former Man Utd and England striker, Plymouth enjoyed a decent start to the season as they were strong at home, but he left the club after a poor run of form left them bottom of the Championship.

READ: Wayne Rooney: Everton return among five potential next moves for Man Utd icon after Plymouth exit

It remains to be seen whether Rooney will return to management, but Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has explained why a move to Man City would be a good idea.

“I do feel sorry for Wayne Rooney. Every role he’s taken has been a really difficult one. It’s difficult to see where he goes next,” Goodman said.

“I understand the decision (Rooney’s departure). Plymouth suffered some terrible away defeats with no quality and, more worryingly, no fight. They scored just three and conceded 35 goals in his 13 away games at Plymouth which is embarrassing, really. Something had to be done and I think Wayne knew that too.

“I get the feeling he’d like to stay involved in football but might need some time out. Perhaps he could go somewhere as a number two? It’s hard to see him getting a manager role at any high level in the immediate future.”

“I remember him joking about going to Manchester City and learning from Pep Guardiola previously. It sounds funny but it wouldn’t be the worst idea, would it when you look at what Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca learned?!

“Obviously, that’s probably a non-starter but Coleen’s been in the jungle so they might want to take some family time. He was an excellent as a pundit in the summer at the Euro’s and I’d imagine people would like to see him do it again.

“My best guess though, is that he’d like to get back in football in a ‘hands-on’ capacity.”

Man Utd legend Teddy Sheringham meanwhile reckons he could take a “very important role” at Man Utd.

“Would Wayne Rooney be a good striking coach? Without a doubt. I think it is a very important role nowadays. There are set-piece coaches, back four coaches, striker coaches and Wayne’s been one of the top players in the country,” Sheringham said.

“Could he help Rasmus Hojlund? Of course. He’s an experienced player that’s played for his country a hundred times and scored goals at the top level. So any advice from him you would have to listen to.”

PL rivals planning sensational January raid on United for £40m forward to “rescue their season” – report

Despite their most recent impressive draw at Anfield, Manchester United have struggled to score consistently this season and have scored as many goals as 19th-placed Leicester City.

Rasmus Hojlund fluffed his lines against Liverpool while Joshua Zirkzee keeps getting linked with a January exit despite his coach and teammates wanting him to stay.

However, the biggest disappointment for Ruben Amorim has been Marcus Rashford, who was initially played up front but his lacklustre work off the ball and in training eventually saw him lose his place in the starting lineup.

After being snubbed for the all-important Manchester derby, the Mancunian came out and revealed that he wanted to leave his boyhood club and the Portuguese has not played him in the last six games in a row.

        Rashford’s future

INEOS have not found it easy to find the Englishman a new home in January due to their asking price and the forward’s massive £300,000 per week wages (via capology).

So far, only loan proposals have arrived with the United co-owners looking for a permanent solution. The England international has already ruled out a move to Saudi Arabia and Turkiye.

AC Milan and Barcelona have emerged as possible options as they weigh up a loan deal with an option to buy and according to The Daily Mail, they have been joined by United’s domestic rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

“Tottenham are among a number of European giants who want to take Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United. Spurs are looking to bolster their attacking options and rescue their season despite being the second-top scorers in the Premier League.

        Spurs join the race

“However, they could face competition from Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan, with his representatives having jetted off for talks with the latter. Juventus and Galatasaray also hold an interest.”

The report does not make clear whether Spurs are eyeing only a straight loan or are willing to buy next summer while how much of the 27-year-old’s wages need to be covered by the Red Devils is also not made clear.

Either way, based on how difficult United have found it dealing with Daniel Levy in the past, they should not agree a deal with the North London side.

Strengthening a direct domestic rival does not seem the brightest idea and if United are to agree a deal with Spurs, they should try and earn more than the reported £40 million while making it as difficult as possible for the Lillywhites.

United learn price of Amorim’s dream left back target desperate for Old Trafford switch – report

United learn price of Amorim’s dream left back target desperate for Old Trafford switch – report

Manchester United have learnt that it would reportedly take €60 million to extract Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain in this January window.

The Red Devils must try and improve their squad in Ruben Amorim’s first transfer window under tight financial restrictions.

Alongside the striker position, the most urgent need the club faces is the necessity of signing a specialised left wing back for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

United have been linked to a plethora of options such as Milos Kerkez, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Patrick Dorgu, after earlier rumours of Alphonso Davies have quietened down.

Another name that has gained traction recently is Nuno Mendes and it was relayed here that United have already lodged a bid for the talented 22 year old.

The Independent report that “Manchester United need a sale in order to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s €60m valuation of Nuno Mendes, with Ruben Amorim and the new INEOS leadership keen to start a badly-desired overhaul.”

The beginning of the window has started in depressing fashion for United fans after reports have exposed the extent of the club’s financial issues, as it was reported that even academy graduates like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are not off-limits if a suitable bid were to arrive for them.

Interestingly, the report from The Independent mentions that United may have a carrot to offer for Mendes as “it is understood that Garnacho has come up in talks between United and PSG”.

Nonetheless, there has been no suggestion that the Argentine could be part of any formal swap deal for the Portuguese left back as of yet.

The report also mentions that “as it stands, however, there is a considerable difference in terms of asking price and United’s valuation with the club even short on Mendes’ desired salary.”

Therefore, a January move can probably be knocked on the head but reports from Footmercato claim that United won’t try and pry the left back away from PSG in January but will make their move in the summer if contract negotiations continue to be unproductive.

What’s more, Mendes is said to be “very interested” in a move to Old Trafford to reunite with former boss Amorim and United may just fancy their chances of landing the player when they hopefully have more financial flexibility in the summer months.

In another twist however, PSG are reportedly not overly worried by the stand-off with Mendes. They believe it is just a normal part of posturing during contract negotiations and will continue to try and thrash out a new deal in the coming weeks.

Man Utd transfer: Romano reveals Rashford ‘deal on’ with ‘concrete’ bid ‘proposed’ amid ‘unhappy’ Amorim stance

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester United star Marcus Rashford before his agent’s meeting with AC Milan.

The 27-year-old has been linked with several European clubs after he made it clear that he wants to leave Man Utd this month.

Rashford’s reputation and value have declined over the past 18 months as he’s been slammed for his poor form, so a loan is most likely this month.

Earlier this week, a report named AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray as possible destinations, though his agent has travelled to have a meeting with the Serie A giants.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed Rashford is a ‘big priority’ for AC Milan, who have ‘proposed a loan with an option to buy’.

READ: Cristiano Ronaldo: Man Utd bottom of next move likelihood ranking including Chelsea, PSG

On Tuesday evening, Di Marzio said: ‘Milan are aiming high and have identified Marcus Rashford as their big target for the winter transfer market.

‘In the last few hours, the Rossoneri club has put forward a concrete proposal for the English talent to its agents, trying to bring him to Milan with a formula that includes an initial loan, accompanied by a right of redemption.’

Romano has since provided another update, saying the Rashford saga is about to ‘enter its important stages’.

He says it’s ‘deal on’ with discussions taking place ‘today’, but it is also noted that Rashford’s relationship with Man Utd is ‘not broken’.

👉 Cristiano Ronaldo: Transfer ‘option appears’ after he ‘requests reunion’ with Man Utd star ‘offered’ deal

In his column for GiveMeSport, Romano said: ‘The future of Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is about to enter its important stages.

‘It’s an open race as of now, but yes, movements have finally started with his brother/agent and his camp travelling around Europe to meet with clubs, explore possibilities and consider ideas ahead of the next weeks in order to decide what to do.

‘Let’s clarify first of all that there are still some chances for Rashford to stay and continue at Manchester United. The relationship is complicated, but not completely broken at this stage.

‘Ruben Amorim wants to see more from Marcus, that’s very clear. He’s not been happy with some training sessions in recent weeks and that is the main reason why he’s been left out of the squad several times, apart from at Anfield where he missed the game because he was ill. But the story remains open.

‘Meanwhile, Rashford is considering his options and his camp has started movements. While I’m writing this column, Marcus’ brother is in Italy, ready for face-to-face talks with AC Milan who are among the clubs keen on understanding the conditions of the deal.

‘We’re not at advanced stages or not even in concrete negotiations as of now, but AC Milan are looking for an offensive player to add to their roster and Rashford is high on their list.

‘The England international’s salary is also a key part of the story; Milan are not planning to cover the full salary but could be open to including a buy option clause in negotiations. For sure, talks will take place and we will see if Milan will be able to advance on both the player and club side with Man United.’

United cult hero pulling big strings to get Marcus Rashford to his club this month – report

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is looking increasing likely to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window, with potential suitors emerging on the continent.

Italian giants AC Milan are ramping up their interest in the 27-year-old with a move to Serie A appealing to the out-of-favour United star.

As reported by The Express, a former United favourite is playing a key role in the negotiations with Milan hoping to get a deal over the line in the coming weeks.

Zlatan Ibrahimović is currently acting as a senior adviser to Milan with the Rossoneri hoping his relationship with Rashford will help persuade the Englishman to make the switch.

The former Swedish international, of course, played with Rashford during his memorable stint at United and would have no doubt made an impression on the then young forward.

Ibrahimović was central to United’s success in the 2106/17 season where Jose Mourinho led the club to Carabao Cup and Europa League glory and Rashford was also part of the squad.

Zlatan quickly became a fan favourite in Manchester and made 53 appearances for United registering 28 goals and 10 assists in his debut season.

It was expected Rashford would take over the mantle from Ibrahimović and become the leading light in United’s frontline for years to come.

However, despite one outstanding season which saw him net over 30 goals, Rashford’s United career has stuttered and it now looks like his future lies away from Old Trafford.

After being left out of the Manchester Derby last month, the Englishman hasn’t featured in the five subsequent games in which United have played with commitment and attitude being cited as the reasons behind his omission.

It’s unlikely Milan will stump up a transfer fee for the player this month but a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy at the end of the season looking the most viable deal at present.

United have reportedly received an offer from the Italian club and fans are eagerly awaiting an end to the saga which is likely to come to a head over the coming days.

Alejandro Garnacho is open to leaving Manchester United and could make a sensational return to Atletico Madrid, according to a shock report.

The 20-year-old was poached from Atletico’s academy for just £400,000 in July 2022, and with the Argentinian winger said to be “frustrated” under Ruben Amorim he is open to heading back to Spain.

This is according to TBR Football, who claim that “there is a feeling of uncertainty” around Garnacho, whose standing in the squad has slipped somewhat since Amorim’s arrival.

The youngster was previously thought to be untouchable amidst United’s plans for wholesale changes in the squad, but reports yesterday claimed that he – and Kobbie Mainoo – would be allowed to leave should an appropriate offer arrive.

With Chelsea said to be sniffing around Mainoo, Garnacho is thought to be on the radar of his previous club.

TBR Football say that “Atletico Madrid remain very interested in signing Garnacho and are keeping a close eye on his situation.”

The report claims that “the Argentine is frustrated with life under Ruben Amorim so far”, and points to “question marks over whether he fits into his 3-4-3 tactical setup.”

The Portuguese boss has spent much of his time since arriving at Old Trafford rotating his squad to see who works best in which position, and Garnacho has been a casualty of this approach.

The winger’s last start came in United’s 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest, and he was not included in the squad for the following game – the Manchester derby.

Since then, he has featured sparingly from the bench, and made a positive contribution to United’s impressive 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the weekend.

TBR Football report that the player is “rated highly by both the former Sporting CP boss as well as the Manchester United hierarchy.” However, they add that “neither party will stand in the youngster’s way if he wishes to leave United.”

Garnacho is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, after signing an extension in April 2023.

This means he would not come cheap, and the report notes that his potential sale “would massively benefit” United, as he counts as a homegrown player whose departure “would be accounted as pure profit.”

It would be gravely concerning if United, supposedly in the midst of building a squad for the long-term, part ways with one of its most promising youngsters.

While sometimes frustrating, Garnacho’s record of 23 goals and 13 assists in 115 games is impressive for a 20-year-old, and his potential is gigantic.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim sent warning over misfits amid ‘very difficult’ challenge to sell flops

Ruben Amorim may not get a chance to execute his plans at Manchester United and he could be forced to work with players he wants out of the club for some time to come.

That’s the warning from Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn, who believes the players Amorim wants to eject from his squad may be hard to move on if they are sitting on lucrative long-term contracts.

The Portuguese tactician has expressed his dismay at some of the performances Man United have put in since he replaced Eric ten Hag in November.

Amorim’s very public criticisms prior to last Sunday’s battling 2-2 draw against Liverpool that his players are “anxious and sometimes afraid” when they take to the field were backed up by his confused response to their dramatically improved level of performance at Anfield.

“I want to see my team play so much better but I think the most important thing here is the mentality. That is the key for everything,” said Amorim after the draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool.

“Today we were a different team, not because of the system, not because of the technical aspects or tactical aspects of the game but because we faced the competition in the way that we’re supposed to face every day, training and match.

“It doesn’t matter the place, the opponent. We need to face every day like that.”

Amorim’s comments cemented the belief that he is keen to change the make-up of his squad with the addition of new faces, but Winterburn believes that task will not be easy ahead of United’s trip to face Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie.

“Manchester United brought a manager in who they hoped to sort everything out, but it is going to take some time,” Winterburn told Football365 with William Hill.

“They have some quality players, but there has been something lacking there for a long time now and Amorim has found that out very quickly.

“Whether it is a lack of understanding of how to be organised as a team and a lack of application to give 100 per cent effort and working as a team.

“I’ve looked at Man United for the last few seasons and it is clear that something is missing, but they still have players who can hurt you on an individual day.

“United played really well at Liverpool, but Man United supporters will not accept them playing well for one week and then being off-it for the next five matches.

“It’s all very well saying United need to get rid of a load of players, but it’s very difficult to get them out when they are on big contracts and that might be what Amorim needs to do before he can bring in his own players.

“Bringing in new players without your wage bill exploding is a challenge. Players that he thinks he doesn’t want or who are disruptive, how quickly can he get them out of the club.”

United boss Amorim may hope to be active in this month’s transfer window, but Winterburn is not expecting his old club to splash the cash this month despite some injury concerns for manager Mikel Arteta.

A serious hamstring problem has sidelined key attacking player Bukayo Saka, with their defensive injury list also a major concern.

“Losing Martin Odegaard for a long period was a big blow at the start of the season and now Saka is out for a couple of months,” he added.

“Then you look at the defence and I’ve never seen anything like it in terms of the number of players Arsenal have had out.

“Moving Thomas Partey out of midfield and into a right-back role was evidence of the kind of defensive problems Arteta is battling and you don’t get any continuity when you play don’t play with the same defensive partners every week.

“Considering the injuries, Arteta has done a good job as they are right up there with Liverpool and even though they have a game in hand, six points is not a massive gap.

“They are in the mix for trophies again, but I don’t expect Arsenal to do too much. I certainly don’t think they will panic buy. Arsenal have got a bigger picture with Mikel Arteta and he is not the type of manager who will just fill gaps due to the current injury situation.

“The debate is always about the centre-forward role and whether they need to bring someone in, but I wouldn’t expect that to happen in January. That’s always a longer-term plan and it tends to happen in the summer window.”

Cristiano Ronaldo could prove key to United offloading star on huge wages at Old Trafford

Cristiano Ronaldo could prove key to United offloading star on huge wages at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s turbulent start under Ruben Amorim has left the new head coach in no doubt of the size of the task ahead of him if he is to restore the club to its former glories.

The arrival of the new sporting structure under INEOS will be tasked with providing Amroim with the tools to improve United’s current crop of underperforming stars with only a handful of the first team safe from the chop.

Brazilian superstar, Casemiro, is one of United’s highest earners and is likely to be a statement departure under the new regime given his huge wage and currents status in the squad.

A move to Saudi Arabia has been widely touted for the former Real Madrid man, with the growing league the only place he will be able to match, or better, his eye-watering salary in Manchester.

As reported by The Mirror, Al-Nassr appear to be the most likely destination for the 32-year-old as they attempt to bridge the gap between themselves and Al-Ittihad as the top of the RSL.

United legend Cristiano Ronaldo turns out for Al-Nassr and is reportedly urging his side to seal the deal for his ex-teammate at both Madrid and Old Trafford.

Ronaldo could prove key in the move going ahead given his obvious influence in the league.

Reports claim that Ronaldo has made a personal plea to the powers that be at Al-Nassr to get the deal over the line in January.

Casemiro is apparently open to the switch and United are happy for a cut price deal to be struck to get the midfielder off the wage bill.

Amorim clearly doesn’t see the Brazilian as part of his first team plans with Kobbie Mainoo and Manual Ugarte the starting pair in centre of the park.

After an excellent first few months at Old Trafford, Casemiro’s form has deteriorated massively with the pace of the Premier League just too much for him to handle.

The five-time Champions League winner has made 105 appearances for the club since his whopping £70 million arrival from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022.

                      Hayley Ladd

Everton Women are set to sign Manchester United Women midfielder Hayley Ladd permanently and Emma Watson on loan until the end of the season.

Ladd has been at United since 2019 when they played their first season in the Women’s Super League.

The experienced Welsh midfielder has played 110 times for the side and has scored 11 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils.

The 31 year old has found her gametime significantly reduced this season however as she has only played eight minutes of league action for Marc Skinner’s side.

Therefore, it was reported by The Athletic that she was looking for a January exit as she prepares to represent Wales in the Euro championship this summer.

The American publication now reports that she has already completed a medical at Everton in her pursuit of further time on the pitch.

“She is set to sign an 18-month contract at Everton with the option of a further year,” the outlet states.

“Her United contract was due to expire at the end of the season and Everton have paid an undisclosed transfer fee to sign her this month.”

A familiar face will be joining Ladd in Merseyside as 18 year old Emma Watson will also move to Everton, but only on loan.

The youngster’s United career got off to a horrible start in 2023 when she suffered an ACL injury playing for Scotland that kept her out of action for significant time.

She did score her first goal for the club last month however in a 5-3 win over Newcastle United in the League Cup.

The 18 year old will hope to get valuable first team minutes under her belt so she can come back and challenge more seriously for a spot in the first eleven at United in the next campaign.
