Blockbuster update: £60m United magician “looks set to stay” despite interest from Europe’s elites – report

Manchester United’s precarious situation with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules has led to INEOS mulling over selling academy graduates to fix things.

With the Red Devils languishing in 13th place in the league, Ruben Amorim will naturally seek help to get the club out of its current predicament.

But the new co-owners are in no position to help due to their summer splurge on players and the compensation paid to former manager Erik ten Hag and Sporting Lisbon for their Portuguese tactician.

That is why the heads of multiple big-name stars are on the chopping block and that incredibly includes wonderkids Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, both considered untouchable not too long ago.

    Garnacho no longer unsellable

Amorim has already been asked about the midfield magician’s future after his contract demands saw Chelsea enter the race for his signature.

However, as per The Mirror, there is not much interest in the Argentine international as of now, and as a result, he looks to be staying at least till the end of the current season.

Atletico Madrid were said to be in the mix but they were far from pleased with the way Garnacho departed their club and currently, Diego Simeone does not have a need for left wingers.

Paris Saint-Germain have adopted a watching brief so far and no concrete attempt has been made and with United asking for more than £60 million for him this month, the 20-year-old is expected to remain at Old Trafford.

“Alejandro Garnacho looks set to stay at Manchester United this month with little interest forthcoming in a deal for the young winger.

“United are looking to sell players to enable new boss Ruben Amorim to make significant adjustments to his squad this month and to comply with profit and sustainability rules.

“As such, Garnacho’s name has been circulated among a number of Europe’s top clubs. The 20 year-old’s stock has dropped at United since the change of manager, with Amad ahead of him in Amorim’s thinking

“Atletico Madrid – whom Garnacho left to join United on a free transfer in 2020 – has been mooted as a potential destination but there remains some ill feeling with regards the manner of his exit.

    All exit avenues blocked

“La Liga rivals Barcelona have watched Garnacho over the past 18 months too, but are in no position to make any move due to their own financial issues. Paris Saint-Germain are potential suitors and are believed to have been tracking his situation in recent months but have not advanced on anything other than merely a watching brief at present.”

Garnacho’s stock has certainly fallen since Amorim took charge, with the academy graduate last starting a game over a month ago, with Amorim excluding him from the matchday squad ahead of the Manchester derby.

His application both on and off the pitch and his body language were questioned by the head coach and now with all exit avenues blocked, Garnacho has very little option but to try and win back the coach’s trust.

He has recently responded by deactivating his Twitter/X account and also registered the assist for Amad Diallo’s equaliser against Liverpool last Sunday. More hard work is needed and the FA Cup tie against Arsenal could give him the perfect platform to remind everyone of his qualities.

Marcus Rashford: Barcelona transfer ‘serious option’ as giants ‘go all out’ on Man Utd forward

Marcus Rashford: Barcelona transfer ‘serious option’ as giants ‘go all out’ on Man Utd forward

La Liga giants FC Barcelona are prepared to ‘go all out’ for the signing of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, according to reports in Spain.

Rashford is allowed to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window after falling out of favour under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

He was first omitted from a matchday squad for the trip to rivals Manchester City on December 15 and has not played since.

The England International was an unused substitute once, though, against Newcastle United two weeks later.

There is plenty of interest in Rashford, with Napoli being linked with a swap deal involving Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund both keen.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have always been in the background but the Catalan club’s financial situation means a deal will be very difficult to pull off.

Rashford earns over £300,000 a week at Old Trafford and United have reportedly set a £50million asking price, making a permanent transfer impossible for Hansi Flick’s side.

A loan departure seems the most likely this month. Depending on how much of the 27-year-old’s salary the Red Devils want covered, a move until the end of 2024/25 could suit the Blaugrana.

Barcelona ‘enter the bidding’ for Man Utd outcast Rashford

Their interest appears to be genuine as a report from Spanish outlet Sport claims Barcelona ‘will bid’ for Rashford and are ready to go ‘all out’ to sign him on a six-month loan.

Incoming signings depend on sales and if they do get rid of a player or two, the Catalan giants will be ready to pounce.

Indeed, Barca ‘have entered the bidding’ for Rashford’s signature and having initially been an ‘alternative’, they are now ‘a serious option’.

The signing of the England and United star is deemed ‘a complex but not impossible operation’ and Barca sporting director Deco has had ‘informal meetings with players’ environments’ during a trip to Saudi Arabia.

This includes speaking to current Barca players – likely including Juventus and Arsenal-linked defender Ronald Araujo – and potential signings – like Rashford.

The most likely departures in Catalonia are Araujo, Eric Garcia and Ansu Fati, with salary space needing to be freed up if Rashford can be signed this month.

The report claims Rashford ‘has several proposals on the table’ amidst interest from Milan, Dortmund and Napoli, while Arsenal have also reportedly been in contact with their Premier League rivals and FA Cup opponents this weekend.

To add fuel to the fire, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Barcelona’s interest in Rashford.

Romano says the player’s camp has been in contact with Barca, after being ‘informed on conditions of a loan deal’.

United trigger one-year extension clause of talismanic midfielder Skinner wants to “build the future around”

Manchester United have triggered the one-year extension clause contained in Grace Clinton’s contract, extending her stay at the club at least until the summer of 2026.

Clinton joined United from Everton in 2022 but only made her competitive debut this season.

She is enjoying a fantastic campaign, with the Reds currently in fourth place in the Women’s Super League rankings and seven points below table leaders Chelsea.

The midfielder is currently United’s joint-top goalscorer in the WSL alongside striker Elisabeth Terland.

Clinton’s deal was due to expire in the summer, but now she will remain at United for an additional 12 months while they go about trying to tie her down to longer and improved terms.

According to Skinner, United should build the team around the impressive Clinton.

Skinner said [via BBC], “Grace has been fantastic this year. She is a fantastic product of the loan system. It was Bristol [City] for six months and then she went away to Tottenham and has come back in fantastic form.”

“The way we have gone around the transfer market is to go into a younger model with talented players that we can grow. Grace fits that fantastically. Grace is a player that we should be building this future team around.”

The United boss insisted he’s hopeful that the club will eventually agree a new deal with the 21-year-old.

“I know the club will be meeting Grace and her representatives to discuss that and what terms look like.”

“I don’t have any say in that, but of course, that is something I’d love us to pish and I’d love Grace to stay here for a long time. I am absolutely certain those conversations will be taking place.”

United return to action tomorrow when they face West Bromwich Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Leigh Sports Village. Kick-off is at 17:15 GMT.

Man Utd ‘doing everything’ to hijack Spurs signing with ‘ideal’ transfer details revealed amid Romano update

According to reports, Manchester United are ‘doing everything’ to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani.

The Red Devils need signings in various positions and it’s been reported that one of their priorities is to sign a new forward.

Man Utd are only seven points clear of the relegation zone and one of their main problems has been that they lack a goal threat.

Ruben Amorim’s side have only scored 23 goals in 20 Premier League games, while Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are joint top scorers with four goals apiece.

United could do with signing a new striker and Kolo Muani has emerged as a potential target.

The 26-year-old was linked with several Premier League clubs after he scored 23 goals in 46 games for Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2022/23 season, but PSG won the race to sign him for around £76m.

Kolo Muani has struggled over the past 18 months as he’s largely been a bit-part player for PSG. He only has eleven goals in 54 appearances for the Ligue Un giants across all competitions.

The France international has been made available for a transfer this month and Fabrizio Romano has revealed Man Utd, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus are in the race to sign him.

It’s also been suggested that Tottenham are leading the race as they are ‘close to agreeing’ personal terms, but a new report from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reveals Man Utd are ‘doing everything’ to snatch the signing.

Plettenberg said: “Manchester United’s efforts to sign Randal Kolo Muani are becoming more concrete!

“The Red Devils are now determined to do everything possible to secure his transfer in the winter. Recently, there have been very specific talks with his management, and direct negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain are expected to follow.

“#MUFC are considering a loan deal, ideally with an option to buy.

“Other clubs still in the race include Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan, and others.”

Despite this, former Man Utd defender Paul Parker thinks they should be targeting a new wing-back and he’s named an ideal signing.

“I never look at it that way, people say things to me and I sway my head around and say yes or no,” Parker said.

“Although, if I’m looking at a wing-back, someone who can play as a natural wing-back because they’re tenacious when they defend and they’re aggressive when they go forward.

“I’d say somebody like Alphonso Davies. In my opinion, you need someone who is athletic, doesn’t need to be asked to run and just loves working up and down the pitch and loves the freedom.

“If people try to man mark him, he will take them away and affect their game as well and not accept being marked.”

United back in the hunt for midfield “pitbull” who can be the perfect Casemiro replacement – report

Manchester United are willing to sell multiple big-name stars this January window to raise capital and try to bring in reinforcements for Ruben Amorim.

Midfield is one area which the Portuguese is keen to improve with both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen not bringing the required level of intensity as demanded by the head coach.

The Brazilian’s exit seems more advanced than the Dane with Al-Nassr and United legend Cristiano Ronaldo pushing for a reunion with the defensive midfielder.

And in case the five-time Champions League winner departs, the Red Devils have the perfect replacement in the Premier League itself — Joao Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Joao Gomes back on the radar

He is proven in the English game, a huge draw for INEOS, while his age profile and ability to play in multiple midfield roles will be a huge asset for a club like United.

As per journalist Rudy Galetti, United have asked for information about Casemiro’s Brazilian compatriot but have been told that Wolves do not want to part ways with the 23-year-old in the middle of the season.

            🚨🗣️ #Liverpool, #Arsenal, #Tottenham and #ManUtd have recently asked fresh info on Joao #Gomes.

‼️ To date, #Wolves are not open to considering selling him this transfer window: only a huge offer could change their mind.

            — Rudy Galetti (@RudyGaletti) January 9, 2025

It would take a humongous offer to change their minds at this stage. Rivals Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are also eyeing the midfield dynamo.

“Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Man Utd have recently asked fresh info on Joao Gomes. To date, Wolves are not open to considering selling him this transfer window: only a huge offer could change their mind,” Galetti wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Wolves eyeing huge bid to let him go

The former Flamengo star has made 20 appearances this season, notching two goals and one assist while playing all across the middle of the park, with versatility a huge draw for Amorim.

The Peoples Person had written about the Brazilian last season as well and his asking price was about £38 million at that point but Wolves could ask for more given his current importance.

Known as “The Pitbull” for his relentless pressing and work-ethic, Gomes’ game bears similarities with that of United’s Brazilian midfielder and he is reportedly a fan of the 32-year-old as well.

He has already replaced the five-time Champions League winner at international level and could be about to do the same at club level now should INEOS manage to cough up the cash either in January or next summer.

United Women raring to go for second half of season as top star makes timely return to training

United Women raring to go for second half of season as top star makes timely return to training

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner has announced that Ella Toone is back in training after a two-month injury layoff.

The England international has been a talisman for United over the years and capped an impressive year last season with a wonderful long-range strike in the FA Cup final versus Tottenham Hotspur Women.

This year has been one of change for the women’s team with long-time servants Mary Earps and Katie Zelem leaving the club and it was expected Toone would step up in their absence.

It has been a trying year for the 25-year-old though, as she suffered a calf injury in November and has been sidelined for two months.

She has only played six matches in the campaign and has unusually failed to score or assist in any of those games, as United have had to make do with her absence.

Fortunately, she is on the cusp of a return to action according to comments her manager made in the pre-match press conference before the women’s team begin their defence of their FA Cup title against West Bromwich Albion Women on Saturday.

Skinner stated, “Ella Toone is back and hopefully in the squad, she will hopefully play some part against West Brom.”

“We are looking at that obviously with the games coming up as well. Probably (playing) around half an hour, I think is probably sensible. The competitive chaos nature of a game that you can’t control a little bit more fatigues mentally.”

The manager also revealed that she returned to training on Thursday and looked “sharp” while doing some tactical work with the rest of the squad.

Whilst not confirming whether she will definitely play a part against West Brom, Skinner claimed, “So hopefully we can get her into the game and introduce her after the long time she’s had out.”

The team have coped admirably without Toone as they have qualified for the quarter finals of the League Cup. They are also well in contention to qualify for the Champions League next season, as they currently sit one place outside the top three but only on goal difference.

Toone’s return is certainly exciting news though as United face some mouth-watering fixtures over the coming weeks with league and cup fixtures versus Manchester City and a match against fifth-placed Brighton and Hove Albion to come in the month of January.

They will take on West Brom at 17:15 UK time tomorrow evening.

United to “make an offer in the next few weeks” for Mourinho favourite who dismantled Amorim’s team recently – report

United to “make an offer in the next few weeks” for Mourinho favourite who dismantled Amorim’s team recently – report

Manchester United have not won in their last five attempts, conceding 13 goals in the process. And Ruben Amorim is already planning to strengthen the backline moving forward.

Victor Lindelof is expected to depart, either this winter or once his contract ends and INEOS seem to have found the perfect replacement from within the Premier League.

It is no secret that the new co-owners prefer young stars with room to improve with Premier League experience seen as an added bonus.

And according to Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb, the Red Devils are eyeing Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen as a potential option this January.

                  Huijsen a target

The two-footed centre-back has become a mainstay in Andoni Iraola’s side, starting the last seven league games in a row with Bournemouth not losing a game during this impressive run while the player himself contributed two goals.

The Spaniard put on a masterclass against Amorim’s team in December as the Cherries won by three goals with Huijsen also getting his name on the scoresheet.

And that impressed the Portuguese tactician enough for him to ask INEOS to get him the Spain U21 international as soon as possible with an offer expected within the next few weeks.

However, a potential deal will not be easy to conclude given Real Madrid’s interest in the 19-year-old while Bournemouth themselves have no interest in allowing the youngster to leave so soon after joining them.

“It’s not just Real Madrid who are interested in Dean Huijsen, defender of Bournemouth. The centre-back, bought in the summer from Juventus for around 18 million euros including bonuses, is being followed by several big clubs for the near future.

                  Real Madrid also like him

“Huijsen also scored against Manchester United, the one in the final 0-3 at Old Trafford. The good performance led the Red Devils themselves to circle his name in red, so much so that it seems they are willing to make an offer in the next few weeks.

“However, it is likely that Bournemouth will decide not to sell the player in January.”

The English side had paid €18 million for Huijsen last summer and it was a surprise to see the young centre-back depart Juventus for the Cherries given United were among the teams who were looking at him back then.

Jose Mourinho had plenty of words of praise for him back when the defender was on loan at AS Roma and given his importance to the Cherries, a departure could cost more than €50 million, given the player’s age and contract.

A summer approach seems more likely and even then, it would take a gigantic offer to get him.

Man Utd: Amorim reveals transfer ‘idea’ in Mainoo, Rashford update as they must ‘improve’ two areas

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has provided an update on Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford amid reports linking them with a move elsewhere.

There is expected to be a huge overhaul at Man Utd this year as new head coach Amorim looks to put his stamp on their squad.

Amorim inherited a mess at United and he’s endured a difficult first couple of months at Old Trafford. They are currently only seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The Red Devils need upgrades in various positions, but Amorim has a ‘tight’ budget. This could force them to sanction several pure profit sales amid reports suggesting Mainoo and Rashford could be sold.

Commenting on United’s transfer situation, Amorim admitted they “need to improve” two areas and claimed Mainoo and Rashford have a future at Old Trafford.

“We need to improve recruitment, so that when we are targeting players we are sure they can cope with the demands,” Amorim said.

“Also, we have to improve our academy. Young kids that feel the club in the right way and do some business to have money to invest in the team.

“Our idea is always to keep the best players and to build for this club, but I am really happy and like our players, especially the guys from the academy.”

When asked whether Mainoo and Rashford have a future at Man Utd, he added: “Yeah, my players are always my favourites so I want to keep my players. It is a special moment in this club, it is a hard moment but I am really happy Kobbie is improving.”

“In this moment I am living day by day. What I am thinking is we have one week without any game, we had a day off and we could work with the team a bit,” Amorim continued.

“We have to play the best team and win and follow the last performance. I am not thinking in that way because we are in a difficult moment.

“My focus is more in our week. In the cup you never know. Sometimes it is better to win this kind of game and then you have less time to rest. We just want to win this game and then we will think about the next one.”

On rotating his team, he said: “I think we rotated more in the parts where we were trying to find out what kind of players we have and then a lot of players were returning from injuries and we were rotating less.

“I look at some players in the positions and try and put some fresh legs. Now we have time to train a little bit more and work on set pieces. We suffered a lot in the last game, so we will see. I don’t rotate because I want to rotate. I am trying to find out the best solutions for each game.”

Pogba’s international teammate pinpoints “crazy” reason behind his struggles at United

Bayern Munich star and France international Kingsley Coman has explained why his fellow countryman Paul Pogba found it very tough to be consistent at Manchester United.

Having left the club as a youngster, Pogba made a heroic return to United in 2016 for a then-world record fee of £89m.

However, his second spell at Old Trafford was largely disappointing, with the player failing to regularly come up with the goods on the pitch.

He frequently found himself on the wrong end of criticism from supporters, the media and ex-players, who all felt he could offer so much more.

Coman, who has played with Pogba several times for the French national team, spoke on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast and had his say on the Carrington academy graduate’s woes in England.

“I was sad about his time at Man United because I also felt like Man U was asking him to do too much. You know when I think also his time his start to decline a bit.”

“I think he was still as good but people ask him to score while he’s a midfield player. To do assist, to do everything. I think at one point he was even like the best goal scorer and assist man.”

“This is not what you ask of a midfield player and when they ask you so much and that you can’t do your regular game. When you’re in the middle and you just give the ball to the people then you always need to do crazy things and even though he was the best you cannot play crazy and score.”

Coman added, “I think this is what this was and I really don’t think it was his fault. Obviously then maybe after he could have done something but I was really like when you ask him too much then was like you don’t ask him what you will ask from any other midfielder in the world.”

“So then you need to play and then you lose more ball because you need to do more….because they’re expecting you to do so much. It’s impossible…”

“The regular game where you just take the ball and give it to the guy that will make the difference. They were like Pogba was not good today, didn’t do anything.”

Pogba won the League Cup and Europa League with United, making 226 appearances in total across six seasons before departing for Juventus for a second time in his career.
