United fail to meet Amorim’s “initial transfer demand” as high-flying PL side decide to hold on to talisman – report

Not many would have given Manchester United a chance when they went down to 10 men in the 61st minute against Arsenal in their FA Cup third-round tie at the Emirates on Sunday.

Diogo Dalot struggled on the left against the Gunners and was moved to his preferred right flank position at the start of the second 45 minutes.

But the ineffective Portuguese proceeded to see his second yellow soon after and the hosts subsequently equalised. And at moment, it seemed like he has cost his team the game.

But the bravery shown by the backline and Altay Bayindir’s heroics meant the visitors took the game to penalties and won 5-3 to setup a fourth-round date with former interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

    Dalot was shocking vs Arsenal

While Amorim does not want to sell Dalot just yet, it is clear that United need more quality down the left and that is why a host of left-backs have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this January.

One of them is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez whose chances of moving mid-season had increased when reports emerged that the Cherries were closing in on a move for Julio Soler from Lanus.

But Givemesport have revealed that owing to his importance to Andoni Iraola’s high-flying team, there is no chance the Cherries decide to sell mid-season.

This will deal a major blow to Amorim’s plans and the head coach could be forced to not strengthen now in the hope of landing his desired target next summer.

Due to lack of outgoings, INEOS have failed to raise enough capital to try and fund a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes as well this winter.

    United not getting Kerkez

“Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim could be forced into a significant U-turn over his winter transfer plans as Bournemouth are adamant that leading left-back target Milos Kerkez will not complete a move to Old Trafford ahead of the February 3 deadline.

“Manchester United cannot enter the market for Kerkez or an alternative option until they secure additional funds by overseeing big-name exits, GMS sources have learned, resulting in there being an increasing possibility that Amorim will be left disappointed by failing to meet his initial transfer demands.

“According to GMS sources, the Portuguese tactician is toying with the idea of waiting until the summer to sign a left-back if he cannot land a top target.”

With Tyrell Malacia being linked with an exit and given Luke Shaw’s injury history, it is clear that Amorim needs help on the left wing if United are to climb up the Premier League table.

Big-game temperament aside, consistency will now be key but the without a left wingback, Amorim’s system does not quite work and once again, he is being forced to compromise.

“Ruben said to me…”: Resurgent United star reveals Amorim’s surprise role in his incredible turnaround in form

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has credited head coach Ruben Amorim for his dramatic uptick in form.

Maguire formed part of a valiant defensive effort which saw a 10-man United side hold out for more than an hour to force a penalty shootout against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday.

United eventually won the match, with Joshua Zirkzee converting the decisive kick to send the club through to the fourth round of the competition.

Maguire managed an astonishing 11 clearances and five blocked shots during the 104 minutes he was on the pitch. He also won all of his aerial duels.

When he was taken off and replaced by Leny Yoro, the England international was afforded a standing ovation by the travelling United supporters. It was yet another brilliant defensive display from the 31-year-old, who is certainly cementing his place as one of the very important players in Amorim’s plans.

The former Leicester City man spoke to The Mirror and explained, “Ruben said to me that when it came across to him that I had an option [in my contract], he said it was a no brainer for him. It’s given me confidence and belief that they want me at the club and part of this project. He’s really demanding.”

“And I’m happy to be here. I want this club to be back fighting for titles and not fighting where we are in the table right now. We’ve got a long way to go.”

“I think my first couple of years at United was probably the best part of my career. I’m 31 now, coming up to 32 in a couple of months, but I’m getting back to that level. I also think I was at that level last season as well, so it’s been 18 months now where I’d say I’ve been playing consistently well for this club again.”

“There’s no doubt I had a tough year in my third season when Ralf took over, I wasn’t at my best, I knew that, I knew I needed to find something to stay at this club because it demands high standards and I feel like I’ve found something. Mentally and physically I feel good.”

Maguire insisted that he and his teammates must now show more consistency, starting against Southampton.

“Our consistency this year has been really really poor. We can produce moments. We produced a moment in the FA Cup final last year and played really well but over a long period, our consistency’s been bad. It’s something that we do need to nail down, starting with Thursday.”

“I think it’s important that we stick together. But we also have to realise that we are still where we are in the league table. We’ve got big games coming up, we can’t rest because the league table to look at is embarrassing so we’ve got kick on from this.”

“We’ve got good experienced players who’ve had good careers. We all have belief that we should be a lot higher in the table. We know that. To be sat where we are in the Premier League, it’s nowhere near good enough for this squad. But it’s down to us to change it. We’ve got to go on a little run. You don’t really look after results. You’ve got to look after performances.”

“You can get too wound up looking at results and worrying about results. If the performances are high over a period of time, the results will come and that’s what we’ve got to maintain.”

Maguire will be back in action on Thursday as the Red Devils host relegation-threatened Southampton at Old Trafford.

Man Utd blow as Euro giants ‘plan move’ for Mainoo in Chelsea race; Romano reveals contract ‘complications’

Bayern Munich are ‘planning a move’ for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo in a transfer race with Chelsea amid ongoing doubts over the teenager’s future at Old Trafford.

Mainoo was previously heralded as one of United’s ‘untouchable’ stars along with Alejandro Garnacho, but the club’s dire finances now mean every player has a price.

Chelsea leapt to the front of the queue to sign Mainoo, who is said to be ‘unhappy’ with the initial terms offered by INEOS in negotiations over a new contract.

Mainoo currently earns just £20,000 per week, a drop in the ocean compared to Casemiro’s £350,000 per week wedge, and reportedly wants a salary of around £200,000 that reflects his importance to the team.

United boss Ruben Amorim was asked about the futures of Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of Man Utd’s penalty shootout victory over Arsenal on Sunday and insisted he wants to keep the promising pair at the club.

He said: “I really love my players. I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” he said.

“It’s a special moment in this club, it’s a hard moment, but, of course, I’m really happy with Kobbie, he’s improving, and also with Garna. Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club.

“We know the position that the club is in at the moment, but we will see. I’m very happy, I like our players, especially the guys from our academy.”

There’s no great concern at United that their academy graduate will push for the exit but now The Sun claim ‘Bayern Munich are set to join the race’ for the 19-year-old.

Along with Chelsea, ‘German giants Bayern are also long-term admirers and are planning to make a move if he becomes available’, the report states.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has attempted to ease the concerns of United fans in his Daily Briefing, insisting Mainoo is “happy” at Old Trafford and not looking to leave anytime soon.

He wrote: ‘We’ve had many stories in recent days about the future of Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United. He remains an important player for the club, which Ruben Amorim has confirmed publicly in his recent press conference.

‘So, why this situation with Mainoo’s contract still not being signed? Already one year ago, January-February 2024, Man United tried to extend Mainoo’s contract, but then the whole structure changed.

‘There have been plenty of changes internally at Manchester United, which means it’s different people negotiating the contract. This can be complicated when there are still important details to clarify and finalise.

‘Still, United are relaxed about the situation. They are negotiating and they believe everything is under control, even if there are points to clarify in this new conversation.

‘Overall, Mainoo is happy at Manchester United and not desperate to leave at all, so conversations are ongoing to resolve his future at Old Trafford.’

Man Utd star facing ban after FA Cup brawl in penalty shootout win over Arsenal

Man Utd midfielder Manuel Ugarte could face retrospective action after being seen headbutting Arsenal star Kai Havertz on Sunday.

The Red Devils went in front on 52 minutes in their FA Cup third round clash when Bruno Fernandes produced a brilliant finish to beat David Raya in the Gunners net.

But their lead only lasted 11 minutes with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes scoring just two minutes after Diogo Dalot was sent off for Man Utd.

Arsenal were then awarded a penalty on 69 minutes when Harry Maguire took Havertz out in the penalty area, but Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick was saved by Man Utd goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

The Man Utd and Arsenal players were involved in a brawl moments after the penalty kick was given by referee Andrew Madley with Maguire going to confront Havertz before more players got involved.

Havertz fell to the floor during the incident after television replays showed Ugarte throwing his head towards the Germany international.

And Man Utd midfielder Ugarte could now face a retrospective ban from the Football Association as Madley didn’t award any card to the Uruguayan and the referee appeared to miss the incident during the melee.

Arsenal missed a number of good chances as Man Utd held on in extra time before Bayindir was the hero again as the Red Devils triumphed 5-3 on penalties.

Ruben Amorim was thrilled with his team’s performance versus Arsenal as Man Utd followed up their impressive display against Liverpool last weekend with another good showing.

Amorim told a post-match press conference: “I think we play, especially in the first half, we play better [than] in the first game. We were better in set pieces today, more aggressive. We show different spirit, even with 10 men. We are improving on that aspect.

“I think we had a lot of difficulties in the beginning of the game to control the game with the ball and then we suffered, not big opportunities, but we suffered running after the ball, especially to switch of play, to win the first pressure of Arsenal.

“But then we can take in this moment, take the game to a different level when we talk about aggressivity. And that is a very good thing. We managed to score and then I felt in that moment we were able to improve with the ball, but with the [player] sent off [it] was really hard on us.

“And then we suffered all together, defending very well, with some opportunities from Arsenal. The players were really tired, but I felt since the first minute that today was our day. And I felt also a connection with our fans, our staff. It was a very good day for us in that aspect. We need to improve the way we play football.”

European heavyweights join PL club in transfer race for United “jewel” Amorim loves – report

European heavyweights Bayern Munich have reportedly become the latest club to join the race for Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo remains an important squad member after he broke onto the scene last season under Erik ten Hag.

United have been engaged in talks with Mainoo’s camp over a new deal, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2027.

However, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the midfielder is in a stalemate with the club over the unsatisfactory terms they’ve offered him. It was stated that if he and United are unable to strike an agreement, Chelsea are prepared to pounce and land his signature.

Chelsea are thought to be the frontrunners to secure Mainoo’s services. A subsequent report claimed that the Carrington academy graduate wants £200,000-a-week, a sum that United consider somewhat excessive.

According to The Sun, Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation and are keen on adding Mainoo to their ranks if he were to part ways with the Red Devils.

“Bayern Munich are set to join the race for Kobbie Mainoo, SunSport can reveal. The Manchester United midfielder could be on his way out of Old Trafford if the club are unable to afford his wage demands.”

“Chelsea are at the front of the queue for the midfielder, but SunSport has learned that the London club will not be the only side chasing him. German giants Bayern are also long-term admirers and are planning to make a move if he becomes available.”

“Despite Mainoo’s meteoric rise, the England star is one of their lowest earners and wants a ten-fold increase on his salary. Amorim knows the 19-year-old midfielder is a jewel in the Old Trafford crown.”

There have been suggestions that while United do not want to lose Mainoo, they could be tempted to cash in on him as his sale would represent pure profit in an accounting sense under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Nevertheless, The Mirror note that United are confident they can strike a deal to keep hold of Mainoo, even as interest in him grows.

The Red Devils are back in action on Thursday when they host Southampton at Old Trafford.

West Ham make surprise move for United winger, INEOS ready to sanction loan exit – report

Manchester United flop Antony has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including West Ham United, as per reports.

Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop Marcus Rashford from his matchday squad to face Arsenal in the FA Cup once again drew plenty of attention. The Englishman hasn’t played a single minute of football in nearly a month and he appears destined to depart Old Trafford this month.

Antony is another United winger who has struggled for minutes under Amorim but such has been his form over the past 18 months that his lack of involvement has largely gone unnoticed.

The Brazilian forward was named in the matchday squad on Sunday but remained an unused substitute in his side’s remarkable win over the North London outfit.

The 24-year-old is yet to start a Premier League game this term and has just one goal to his name across all competitions.

Regardless, his potential appears to have still put him on the radar of several clubs.

According to Fichajes, United have given the “go-ahead” for Antony to leave on loan after his failure to cement his place in Amorim’s starting lineup.

West Ham United, Real Betis, and Olympique de Marseille have all shown a “clear interest” in signing the Brazilian talent.

It is understood that West Ham are the first club to officially knock on United’s doors for Antony as they look to strengthen their attack for new manager Graham Potter.

The Hammers allegedly believe that the ex-Ajax sensation, who impressed with his dribbling and creativity in Amsterdam, would fit well in Potter’s system.

Betis have been chasing the player since the summer and Marseille are also keen on adding him to their ranks and there is a belief that he could make a difference in Ligue 1.

It is suggested that United are looking to give Antony, who is comfortably Erik ten Hag’s biggest transfer mistake, time to find his feet in a different environment so that he could rediscover his confidence and form. He is tied to Old Trafford until June 2027.

Serie A giants “do not view” United FA Cup hero as their prime target, United fans will be delighted – report

After a difficult few weeks, Alejandro Garnacho finally got the chance to start for Manchester United in their FA Cup third-round game against Arsenal on Sunday.

And he followed up his assist against Liverpool last week with yet another one as he set up Bruno Fernandes to score United’s spectacular opener.

And despite going down to 10 men, United took the game to penalties and clinched the tie with the Argentine doing a lot off the ball, as demanded by Ruben Amorim.

The Peoples Person has already relayed Napoli’s interest in the Argentina international with the Serie A giants even lodging a bid for the 20-year-old.

                Garnacho shone vs Arsenal

However, given Garnacho’s improvement in form, United have asked for around £60 million, which might be difficult for Antonio Conte’s men to afford.

And as per TBR Football, the Italian giants would much prefer Marcus Rashford over the 20-year-old as they seek to replace the outgoing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who seems to be Paris Saint-Germain bound.

United’s hopes of a swap deal are unlikely to materialise however. And the Naples club will not find it easy to convince both United stars as they are dreaming of a Spanish adventure instead.

“Argentina international is admired by Napoli, but would prefer a move to La Liga. Sources add that Napoli themselves do not view Garnacho as their number one choice either, with those in Naples preferring to seal a deal for Rashford ahead of the South American.

“If Napoli are to sign Rashford – however – they will have to fend off strong competition. TBR Football understand West Ham are pushing to sign Rashford on loan for Graham Potter – while AC Milan are also keen on the England international.

                Napoli prefer Rashford over Garnacho

“For those wondering if either Garnacho or Rashford could be used in a swap deal with Kvaratskhelia, Manchester United sources have played down any suggestion of that happening.

“Crucially, sources have also informed TBR Football that Rashford would prefer a move to Spain too – like Garnacho. Therefore, it feels as if Napoli will have to persuade one of the Manchester United forwards to change their outlook on a move to Italy if a deal is going to progress this month.”

Judging from his display against the Gunners and the adulation he got from the away fans, Garnacho does not look to be leaving anytime soon.

Rashford has not played for the club since the Manchester derby and he has already declared his intention to leave. With INEOS eyeing pure profit to deal with PSR concerns, the Mancunian seems the club’s best bet at the moment.

Man Utd transfer: Romano reveals shock move for Champions League star as Rashford replacement

Manchester United have entered talks with RB Salzburg over a move for winger Nene Dorgeles, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is eager to add new forwards to his squad this month as he looks to revert their slide down the Premier League table.

The need is heightened by the possible exit of Marcus Rashford, who’s being linked with multiple clubs having announced his desire for a “new challenge” last month.

West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal have all been credited with interest, while reports suggest Rashford’s representatives have held talks with Borussia Dortmund and Juventus over his possible transfer this month.

A move to AC Milan looks most likely as things stand, though Kyle Walker’s bombshell announcement on Saturday that he wants to leave Manchester City may have thrown a spanner in the works.

In any case, despite reports suggesting there is a way back for Rashford under Amorim if a move isn’t forthcoming, transfer expert Romano has revealed that the Red Devils are in contact with Salzburg over a deal for left-winger Dorgeles.

He wrote on X: ‘EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United add Nene Dorgeles from RB Salzburg to their list of options for January/summer.

‘Malian winger being monitored by the club and initial talks to be informed on the price/package took place. Man United keep working on that before making decision.’

The 22-year-old moved to Salzburg from Malian side Guidars FC for an undisclosed fee in January 2021 and after a string of loan moves broke into the Austrian giants’ first team last term before becoming a regular in the current campaign.

Dorgeles has four goals and five assists in 14 league outings in 2024/2025 having extended his contract to 2028 last September, and he’s also made six appearances in the Champions League this term.

It’s unclear how much the forward will cost or whether he has a release clause, but Transfermarkt value him at just €8m.

Earlier on Monday, Romano revealed that left-back Tyrell  Malacia “could leave” Man Utd in the January transfer window if they get a good offer or “even an initial loan”.

Romano wrote on X: “Tyrell Malacia could leave Man United now in case of good proposal, even on initial loan with buy clause. …but he’s not a target for Italian side Como, no talks despite reports.”

The Dutchman has never got going at Man Utd, making just 22 Premier League appearances in his first season and missing the entire 2023/24 campaign with a severe knee injury which required surgery.

PSV Eindhoven were interested in taking Malacia back to the Eredivisie in the summer transfer window but ended up abandoning their pursuit over fitness concerns.

Malacia missed Erik ten Hag’s final few months in charge of the Red Devils as he continued his path to full fitness after his terrible injury.

And the 25-year-old’s first game back came in Amorim’s second game in charge in a 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League group stage.

He has made four starts and one appearance from the bench in all competitions under Amorim, including his introduction on 91 minutes in extra time as Man Utd beat Arsenal on penalties in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Cerro Porteno wonderkid Diego Leon has been spotted with Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez as he completed his transfer to Manchester United.

After scouting Leon, United moved with speed last month to secure his services, with technical director Jason Wilcox playing a crucial part in getting a deal over the line.

It’s understood that United and Cerro Porteno reached an agreement for the player at around the £6million mark.

A natural left-back, Leon has impressed since making his first-team debut for Cerro Porteno in August last year. In addition to United, Arsenal and Manchester City were also mentioned to be pursuing him.

Earlier today, Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston revealed that Leon had already touched down in Manchester to finalise his move and undergo a medical at Carrington.

Railston mentioned that although Leon’s transfer would be relatively low-profile, he would still have the chance to meet the club staff and tour the training facilities.

Now, photos have emerged of Leon at United, where he met some players including fellow South Americans Garnacho and Martinez.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the teenage sensation has already signed his contract, which means he can be considered a United player.

In doing so, he effectively becomes the first arrival of the Ruben Amorim era.

It’s understood that the 17-year-old left-back will only spend a few days in Manchester as he is poised to line up for Paraguay’s Under-20s in the Under-20 South American Championship which gets underway in Venezuela this month.

He will then return to Cerro Porteno for the first half of the year, before linking up with United for pre-season in the summer.

Video: United legend takes hilarious social media swipe at Arsenal after enthralling FA Cup tie

Manchester United started their defence of their FA Cup crown with a battling display that saw them knock out Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim’s side progressed to the fourth round after a drama-filled afternoon in North London was settled by a penalty shootout that saw Altay Bayindir emerge as United’s unlikely hero.

Bruno Fernandes’ outstanding strike gave United the lead which sparked a wild second half that saw Diogo Dalot sent off before Gabriel levelled for the hosts.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard then saw his penalty saved by Bayindir who went on to produce a string of fine stops that included thwarting Kai Havertz in the shootout to grant United safe passage to Round 4.

As reported by The Express, former United defender Patrice Evra was delighted with the result and he weighed in on Arsenal’s misfortune.

Evra took to social media to poke fun at the Gunners who now face the very real possibility of another season without a trophy.

The Frenchman posted a funny video on X (formerly Twitter) after the game which showed two young girls walking head first into a mirror, with the thud of them hitting the glass transitioning into the Netflix sound.

                      — Patrice Evra (@Evra) January 12, 2025

The caption read: “Oups. Breaking news: Arsenal @netflix show seasons 21 loading… don’t miss it.”

The Netflix reference comes after Evra’s viral claim that likened Arsenal to the streaming service by stating “you always have to wait for the next season” to see them lift a trophy.

Sunday’s result is another huge feather in the cap for Amorim who, despite his rocky start at United, has now beaten Arsenal and Manchester City on the road as well as producing their season-best showing at Anfield, holding Liverpool to a 2-2 draw.

After a shocking run that saw United lose four on the spin, the team are now showing signs of adapting to the new head coach’s methods and they will expect to build on solid back-to-back displays.

The prize for beating Arteta’s men is a home tie against Leicester City, a game United will expect to win given the ease with which they had swatted the Foxes aside twice earlier in the campaign.

United are next in action on Thursday night with Southampton travelling to Old Trafford for the return of the Premier League.
