Man Utd transfers: Garnacho, Rashford exits approved as Amorim ‘wrestles control’ like Ferguson

Man Utd transfers: Garnacho, Rashford exits approved as Amorim ‘wrestles control’ like Ferguson

Gary Neville “wouldn’t be surprised” if Ruben Amorim sanctioned the exits of both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho this month in a bid to “wrestle control” at Manchester United like Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rashford looks set to leave on loan this month having announced his desire for “a new challenge” in a bombshell interview last month, with AC Milan thought to be the furthest along in negotiations with Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘blocking’ a move to a Premier League rival.

And having previously been an ‘untouchable’ member of the squad, Garnacho could also be on his way out with United attracted by the idea of his ‘pure profit’ sale.

A report on Wednesday claimed Napoli has reached an ‘agreement’ with the Argentinian’s representatives, though the Serie A side aren’t willing to pay the €70m the Red Devils want for their prized asset.

United’s willingness to part with both left wingers has come as a surprise to many, but not Neville, who believes Amorim is taking a leaf out of Ferguson’s book.

“It’s been in the news in the last 24 hours that bids are coming in for Garnacho. There’s been news stories about Rashford going on loan or to another club, it genuinely wouldn’t surprise me if Ruben Amorim made these big types of calls,” Neville said on The Overlap US podcast.

“I don’t think he’s got anything to lose. We’ve seen it all over, ten years, whereby these talented players who haven’t delivered on a consistent basis that will not get Manchester United to the top.

“If you think about what Sir Alex Ferguson did over many, many years. Sometimes some of the major fallouts were with the big players but that was for him to wrestle control.

“Norman Whiteside and Paul McGrath were let go in his early days and, beyond that, Jaap Stam leaving, David Beckham left and Roy Keane left and Ruud Van Nistelrooy left. Massive players that you thought ‘these are big players, they can’t leave’.

“He did it to wrestle control whether you liked it or didn’t like it, agreed with it or didn’t agree with it.”

“This will be a big transfer window,” Neville added.

“It might not be as big as we think but if Garnacho and Rashford were to go, they would be big moves. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a mini clear-out and he brought in one or two players.

“Maybe Ruben Amorim has to go basically for the most high-profile players and say, ‘I’m in charge here, I don’t care who you are, I’m the one who is going to be implementing the standards at the football club and if you don’t quite hit them, I don’t care how talented or valuable you are, what the fans think of you, what your pay packets are, you’re done’.”

Manchester United will host Southampton tonight in a must-win game at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils find themselves in 15th position after this week’s set of fixtures and embarrassingly only seven points above the relegation zone.

Ruben Amorim’s men have started 2025 quite well, drawing 2-2 at Anfield versus Liverpool and knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup at the Emirates on penalties despite playing well over an hour with ten men.

The United boss has claimed before the match that games like tonight “will build the club’s future identity” more than the results versus Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Red Devils will likely have a lot of the ball and will need patience to break down a Southampton team that are unlikely to be too adventurous.

United have struggled to score goals this season as they only have 23 in 20 matches and have rarely looked comfortable trying to unlock a low block.

It is clear that United miss attack minded wing-backs that are so essential to Amorim’s system, but until signings are made, someone will need to take on the responsibility of providing attacking width to help overload the Saints’ defence.

Amorim will most likely heavily rely on both Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes to carve out spaces in the away side’s defence and carry the creative burden that they so often do.

With Diogo Dalot missing the match due to his red card picked up against Arsenal, it will be interesting to see if the Portuguese coach will select Amad as a much more attacking wing-back option and this could be a key to victory.

The away side are hardly free-flowing themselves, having only scored 12 goals all season in the league, the lowest tally in the top five tiers of English football.

Nonetheless, before scoring two quick goals in the first half at St Mary’s in September, United were well under the cosh and Andre Onana had to make a penalty save as Southampton caused the Red Devils’ a host of problems.

It is hard to imagine the opposition being so attack minded tonight but they could be a threat from set pieces.

“Nine of United’s 28 Premier League goals conceded this season have been headers, while nine have also come from corners; both league-high ratios of 32%.”

Amorim’s side have shown improvement in this regard at both Liverpool and particularly Arsenal, but they will need this to continue tonight to avoid giving up easy chances to threaten their goal.

Amad poised to make history for United tonight vs Southampton

Manchester United welcome last placed Southampton to Old Trafford tonight at 8pm UK time, searching for a first league win since the 15th of December.

The Red Devils have played the Saints on 134 occasions, coming out on top 69 times.

They have drawn 37 and lost 28 times.

United have already run out 3-0 winners in the first game of the season between the two sides at St Mary’s.

Here are three plotlines for fans to savour before the match.

United’s unbeaten run versus the Saints

The Red Devils have not lost in the last 16 matches they have played against the side from St. Mary’s.

The last time they tasted defeat was in January 2016 when Louis van Gaal’s side lost 0-1 at Old Trafford.

It hasn’t been all one-way traffic though, as United have only won eight of the fixtures and Southampton have drawn the rest.

In fact, three of the last five matches have ended all square with Man United drawing 1-1 at home in 2022 and 0-0 in 2023 against the side from the south coast.

The last victory for the Red Devils on home soil was the incredible 9-0 win over Southampton in February 2021.

        United’s historically bad home form

Nonetheless, despite morale-boosting results at both Anfield and the Emirates in 2025, United desperately need a win.

Manchester United have lost five of their last seven Premier League matches, winning just once.

According to the BBC, “they have lost three successive Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford for the first time in 45 years.”

These were a 2-3 loss to Nottingham Forest, a 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth and a 0-2 result against Newcastle in an horrendous December.

The Red Devils could lose four top-flight games in a row at home for the first time since 1930.

Incredibly, the last time Old Trafford tasted a victory was in the 4-0 romp over Everton back on the 1st of December, a month and a half ago.

        Amad Diallo could make history

In a season of despair, Amad Diallo has been one of the very few positives.

The Ivorian has transformed himself into one of the key players in the team and recently signed a new deal with the club until 2030.

He has been involved in nine goals in his last 12 Premier League starts for Manchester United, scoring three and assisting six.

If he were to score or assist in the match tonight, he would “become the first African player to reach double figures for goal involvements in a single campaign for the Red Devils.”

Man Utd consider transfer of Japan international after price increase of more than 300%

Manchester United are reportedly considering the signing of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who they wanted when he was at Uruwa Red Diamonds and far cheaper than he’s rated now.

United have had Andre Onana as their No.1 since the summer of 2023. He initially had a mistake-ridden time, but has largely cut that out and become a useful asset for the Red Devils.

When they signed Onana, United were also close to landing another goalkeeper, Japan’s Suzuki. However, the 22-year-old did not want to play second fiddle to Onana, so moved from Japan to Sint-Truiden on loan, and then permanently to Parma.

There, he seems to have again caught the eye of United, as talkSPORT reports they are among the sides eyeing up Suzuki.

But though they could have landed him for £8.5million in 2023, as per the report, it’s believed Parma now rate him at £40million.

It’s stated there are other European sides watching Suzuki, after he’s earned ‘rave reviews’ at his current club. He has made the fourth-most saves of any keeper in Serie A this season, with 61.

Amid his good form, the report states that Parma are hoping to keep Suzuki for one more season. However, a big-money offer would ‘test that resolve’.

Whether United are able to pay the money required is in question, with the cost-cutting measures taking place at the club suggesting big outlays are unlikely, particularly in a position where there is already a top asset.

That opens up another question in itself: with Suzuki feeling he’d have been second choice to Onana in 2023, given United are back in for him, would that remain the case, or would he be able to usurp the goalkeeper position.

That Onana has kept six clean sheets in 20 Premier League games this season, it would be a surprise if he were tossed to the side for a player who is in his first season in a top league.

However, there is clearly something motivating United’s interest, and it remains to be seen what the outcome will be.

Ruben Amorim will be without the previously ever-present Diogo Dalot for tonight’s Premier League Clash against Southampton at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese is serving a one-match suspension after being sent off against Arsenal on Sunday.

Amorim may replace Dalot with Tyrell Malacia at left wing back, but as it’s a home game against the bottom team in the league, we think he will adopt a more attacking formation.

Noussair Mazraoui could switch to the left, with Amad coming back in as right wing back.

Harry Maguire or Matthijs de Ligt could be rested for Leny Yoro as Amorim continues to integrate the young prodigy into the starting XI slowly.

Lisandro Martinez is likely to be the third centre back.

Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Luke Shaw are all still injured.

In midfield, Christian Eriksen could get a run out alongside either Kobbie Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte to provide some creativity.

Toby Collyer performed admirably in Sunday’s Cup game and there is also the option of Casemiro, but we expect them both to be on the bench.

Eriksen’s presence in midfield will allow Bruno Fernandes to play a more advanced role, perhaps alongside Alejandro Garnacho, who has started to find form of late, and Josh Zirkzee.

Zirkzee has come on as substitute for Rasmus Hojlund in the last few games and looked the better player. He will be buzzing after scoring the winning penalty against the Gunners on Sunday, and Hojlund probably would benefit from a rest.

Antony is another option on the wings, but Mason Mount is still injured. Marcus Rashford is also technically available, but it is looking likely he will leave the club this month and may not even be in the squad.

Despite reserve keeper Altay Bayindir’s heroics and man-of-the-match performance at the weekend, Andre Onana will return in goal.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tonight’s game:

Arsenal transfer: Huge Man Utd blow as Gunners set to trigger €70m release clause in January

Manchester United have been dealt a major blow in their bid to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, with Arsenal ready to trigger the striker’s release clause in January.

Ruben Amorim is supposedly desperate to land Gyokeres, who thrived under the Portuguese boss at Sporting, with reports earlier this month claiming the United boss ‘cannot wait until the summer’ to sign the 26-year-old, despite giving his former club his word that he would not poach their players in the winter window.

The Red Devils were boosted by a report claiming Sporting have reduced the Sweden international’s release clause from €100m to €70m, but that is still beyond the club’s reach unless they can secure buyers for Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho or both, with talks ongoing with clubs over their exits.

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs gave an update on United’s attempts to sign Gyokeres on Wednesday, and claims they may need to “look for something more economical” in January to ease their goalscoring woes.

“There’s been no outreach to Sporting yet, but what we can say is that Gyokeres price has dropped from his €100 million release clause down to something in the region of €70m,” Jacobs told FourFourTwo.

“He is a bit more affordable and certainly has lower wages and agent fees compared to another historical Manchester United target in Victor Osimhen, but they might look for something more economical or potentially within the Premier League.”

READ MORE: Top 10 strikers available in January: £150m Arsenal target Isak, Gyokeres, Rashford, Darwin…

Gyokeres has maintained his outstanding form from last season this term, and now has an incredible 75 goals in 80 games for Sporting.

Amorim has the advantage of working with Gyokeres before in a transfer race, but he will have known all along that there would be stiff competition for the striker’s signature, and L’Equipe now claim that Arsenal are prepared to swoop following the injury to Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus tore his ACL in the penalty shootout defeat to Manchester United on Sunday and will be out for the rest of this season and likely a significant chunk of next, focusing the Gunners’ minds on bringing in a new striker this month.

When asked by Rio Ferdinand after the North London derby if Arsenal are now looking to sign a striker to replace Jesus, Mikel Arteta replied: “Yes, for sure.

“Because we lost two players, big players, Bukayo [Saka], who can be out for up to three months, that’s a long time, and Gabby, who is going to be out for a long, long, long time.”

Asked if they will try to complete a new signing before the end of the January window, Arteta said: “We are going to try, for sure.

“We are actively looking at. I think we have lost two very, very important players, we have 14 players in the squad, and we play every three days.

“We will try but let’s see who we can get.”

And it could be Gyokeres, with L’Equipe claiming that while moves for top targets Alexander Isak and Jonathon David are ‘inaccessible’ as Newcastle and Lille don’t want to sell mid-season, ‘the case of Gyokeres may be different’.

That’s because of the now €70m release clause which Arsenal are ‘no longer reluctant to pay’ to bring him to the Emirates before the end of the transfer window.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is also mentioned as an alternative, who would cost a similar amount, with the Bees reportedly asking for £60m for their star forward.

Ruben Amorim makes stern demand of United star amidst strong January exit rumours

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has issued a demand to winger Alejandro Garnacho, insisting he needs to learn to play better in a relatively new role for him.

Garnacho has started only five of Amorim’s 13 games at the helm of United and was dropped from the match-day squad for the derby victory over Manchester City.

There have been suggestions that United are willing to sell Garnacho, sparking the interest of Napoli, who have identified the Argentine as the perfect replacement for Khvicha Kvarataskhelia.

Garnacho has mostly played as a left-sided winger for United but he’s been forced to adjust to an unfamiliar position in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation as one of two No.10s behind the striker.

Speaking in the embargoed section of his press conference ahead of United’s Premier League meeting with Southampton on Thursday, Amorim was asked whether he sees Garnacho as having a bright future at United. The Portuguese coach replied, “That is clear. He has talent. He needs to learn to play in a different position. He needs to play better inside.”

“He improves a lot in the recovering position when he doesn’t have the ball. But doing that, sometimes he’s not in the right place to make transitions like he was in the past. I prefer to defend and then build up with all the team to reach the final third.”

“He’s finding the best way to play in this system. He’s improving during training. He started the last game. Let’s see tomorrow. I think he changed the way he sees himself.”

On the team moving forward, Amorim remarked, “I think we want to be a team that is hard to play. It’s like I had this feeling, especially at home in the last games, that we were easy to play. And we have to be honest with that.”

“So if we face the competition the right way, we will be tough to beat for any opponent. So that’s what I wanted. That’s what I felt in the last two games. It’s a [pride] thing. Yeah, I think that we need to think about that and we have to feel it.”

On yet another occasion, Amorim lamented United’s struggles in front of goal.

“I think, again, we have a lack of goals. This team in the past scored a lot of goals from transition. Not from building up in the half of the opponent’s pitch. So we’ll see tomorrow. We have a lot to improve.”

“I think we, as a team, are not used to spend a lot of time in the last third of the opponent. We had some games here that we lost and we had that control, but the threat was not there. And we have to have time to train that. And the players have to spend a lot of time during training, during the game, to be good at this moment. And if you see – and I saw a lot of games before – we scored a lot of goals like Garnacho doing transitions, Rashford. But then you see the difference of our goals is like always negative and it’s still negative.”

“And I think that is the biggest problem in our team. The lack of goals and the lack of ability to play in the last third of the opponent, to control the games, to control more of the games. So we know that. We need time to train. We try to pass the information, but it’s harder for us to score in that way than in transitions.”

Amorim gave injury updates on a number of players including Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.

“Harry was sick in the last game. He was dead in the end – and that’s what I want from every player. [Playing against the Saints?] Harry, we will see. We cannot lose him, so we will see. Martinez, I think, is okay. Diogo cannot play – his fault!”

“Luke Shaw is nearer than Mason Mount. Mason Mount will take a little bit longer. Luke, we’ll see in the next week or two. We’ll see if he’s returning.”

Amorim dismissed any suggestion that Mount will be out for the remainder of the season.

United vs. Southampton kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

Marcus Rashford has been linked with numerous clubs all over the world but Manchester United are looking to make sure he does not move to a direct domestic rival.

Ever since the Mancunian’s fateful interview about him being ready for a new adventure, headlines have all been about where his future lies.

There has been plenty of interest from within the Premier League with likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur
                    and Chelsea all monitoring proceedings.

While the Red Devils would prefer a permanent solution, they are unlikely to earn a sizeable fee now as compared to the summer. That is why a loan exit is on the cards with the club having to subsidise his wages.

Rashford’s route to a direct domestic rival blocked

But according to The Daily Star, INEOS have made it clear that they would prefer to complete a deal with a foreign club which is why AC Milan are currently leading the race.

“Manchester United bosses want to block Marcus Rashford from joining another English rival. A host of clubs have shown interest in signing the 27-year-old on-loan for the remainder of the season. These include the likes of Tottenham, West Ham and Chelsea.

“With United facing the prospect of having to fund a significant chunk of Rashford’s £350,000-a-week wages, Ratcliffe is not prepared to do this and risk seeing one of his own players damage United’s chances of securing European qualification this season.”

MLS and Saudi Pro League sides were ready to offer big wages but the England international has no intention of leaving Europe currently.

                    AC Milan in pole position

He would prefer a move to La Liga with Barcelona seen as his dream destination but whether the Catalan giants can fund a move now and include an option to buy later remains to be seen, which has handed the Rossoneri pole position.

Fans will be disappointed to see the Carrington graduate leave but inconsistency has plagued his entire United career and Ruben Amorim seems to be the coach who has seen enough.

Despite scoring three times under him, Amorim took the the bold call to drop him from the Manchester derby squad and the Englishman has not seen a minute of action since.

There have been murmurs from the past about his attitude and Amorim finally decided to take action with INEOS backing the coach while the potential to earn pure profit from his sale will also be seen as a boost.

Heartbreak for United as top wing back target opts for switch to bitter rivals – report

Manchester United are destined for disappointment in their pursuit of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who reportedly favours a switch to Liverpool over the Red Devils.

The i Paper state that Liverpool, United and their crosstown rivals Manchester City have “already started to make contact with the player’s representatives.”

But Ruben Amorim, and indeed the beleaguered Pep Guardiola, will be frustrated by the claim that “the 21-year-old favours a move to Anfield over the Manchester clubs.”

The newspaper note that Liverpool have an advantage in the race in the form of director of football Richard Hughes.

Hughes brought the youngster to England from AZ Alkmaar during his time at Bournemouth, which is “understood to play a major part in the Hungary international’s thinking.”

As previously reported Bournemouth still “have no plans” to part ways with their left-back in January despite having just signed Julio Soler, who also plays in that position.

Unlike many Premier League clubs Bournemouth have no pressure to sell, but are understood to be “willing to do business” should an offer of around £50m materialise.

The report notes that while the three north-west giants have registered an interest in the player, there have been “no concrete proposals” from any of them.

United are in desperate need of a specialist wide defender to play the left wing-back role, which is one of the key positions in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

With Luke Shaw remaining on the sidelines through injury, and Tyrell Malacia recently returning from the treatment table with signs of ring rustiness, Diogo Dalot has been filling in.

And while he has worked hard and turned in some decent displays, he is a clear weak link in a team which is starting to find some cohesion.

Kerkez has managed one goal and three assists in 22 appearances in all competitions this season, while Dalot has contributed two assists in 31 matches.

Should United fail to land Kerkez, The i Paper state Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes remains their “top pick”.
