Man Utd, Arsenal target Gyokeres’ ‘preferred’ transfer ‘destination’ named by ex-teammate for one reason

A former teammate of Viktor Gyokeres has picked out the Sporting Lisbon star’s “preferred destination” amid interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

Gyokeres – who was the 2024 top scorer in Europe – has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Sporting Lisbon from Coventry City for around £15m.

26-year-old Gyokeres has 33 goals in his 31 appearances this season and he’s expected to move to the Premier League in the summer.

Man Utd and Arsenal are among the clubs in the market for the forward and are understood to be interested in the Sweden international.

Gyokeres previously had an unsuccessful stint at Brighton and played alongside former Premier League striker Glenn Murray, who has opened up on his struggles for the Seagulls.

“Viktor, he was a young lad at the club and was he up to the level? Well, the manager didn’t think he was up to the level. We were in a squad where we were in survival mode, and you couldn’t really bring lads in to develop them,” Murray said.

“In all honesty, it was one of those situations where he made that hard decision to leave the Premier League and in hindsight, it was the right decision to leave.

“You could always see there was a player in there, but at that point in time he was playing off the left. He liked coming in off the left and shooting. He was never really an out-and-out nine. I’m not sure if that’s because Aaron Connolly was in the same age group as him and he was the one that was doing really well at that moment.

“I’m not sure if Viktor preferred it or he kind of got shunted out to the left. But you could see that there was a desire and a hunger and the capability for him to become a full-time professional player and make it in the game.”

Murray has also picked out Man Utd as his “likely preferred destination” amid his strong relationship with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim.

“He’s smashed every question down so far, so he definitely deserves his chance in the Premier League, and I think with his confidence and ability he would be a success,” Murray added.

“Did I see it coming what has happened? Probably not. It just shows what belief in yourself, other people’s beliefs and confidence can do for you.

“I think the way he’s worked it and what he’s done, it’s pretty much the perfect blueprint for any young professional that might not be ripe to burst into the Premier League. Let’s face it, very, very few are at such a tender age.

“To have a few loans, to go out to Coventry, which was the right fit for him, and the team was built around him to score goals, and then the move to Sporting. When you go to a league like that, you’ve been backed. They paid a lot of money for you, you’re going to get your time, and you’re going to get your chance.

“He’s taken it with both hands and now the next step is one of the big leagues in Europe. Hopefully, that is the Premier League. Obviously, with his old manager being here, it’s quite likely that if he does decide to come here, Manchester United are going to be his preferred destination.”

Ruben Amorim blasted for startling Man Utd claim: ‘I’m shaking my head’

Ruben Amorim has been criticised by two pundits for claiming that his side are the “worst team maybe in the history” of Man Utd.

The Red Devils looked like they might have turned a corner after a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield and a penalty shootout win over Arsenal in the FA Cup third round earlier this month.

But two poor performances against Southampton, although Man Utd ended up winning 3-1, and Brighton have deflated supporters.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter scored the goals as the Seagulls beat the Red Devils 3-1 and leave Amorim’s side 13th in the Premier League table.

Amorim hasn’t improved the Red Devils’ position in the Premier League table since he took over from Erik ten Hag in November and the Portuguese head coach made a shocking statement that his side are the “worst team maybe in the history” of Man Utd.

Speaking after the match against Brighton, Amorim said: “In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me.

“We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

Amorim added: “I knew that was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard.

“Everybody here is underperforming and we have to accept that. It is unacceptable to lose so many games. The opponents are better than us in many details.

“We cannot be consistent and I’m not helping my players in the moment. You have to acknowledge we are in a very difficult situation, with all the bad records, as losing games at home, losing games in the Premier League.

“I know we can succeed but I am not naive. We need to survive this moment. But I am not going to change, no matter what.”

Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol insists he was “shaking his head” at Amorim’s comments after the match and told the Man Utd boss that “you can’t say that”.

Nicol told ESPN: “I’m shaking my head. You can’t say that. For him to come out and say that, you just can’t do it.

“I don’t know what he thinks the reaction from the players is going to be after that. You just can’t say it. Sometimes you just need to lie.”

Ex-MLS player Alejandro Moreno added: “It’s not helpful. I’m not asking you to lie to me but the players will know they’re not very good and know they’re struggling.

“They don’t really need their manager to tell the world that. It doesn’t fill me with loads of confidence if I’m a player in that dressing room.

“I don’t think the players needed to hear that. The one person who can’t lose faith in the players is the manager. If he loses faith, then everything else falls apart.

“You have to lie, you misrepresent the truth, you repackage the message and present a new reality.”

Amorim wants United to offload star player this week, has no intention to give him first-team opportunity – report

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim wants Marcus Rashford out of the club sooner rather than later, as per reports.

Erik ten Hag stamped his authority at Old Trafford by showing Cristiano Ronaldo the exit doors. The development strengthened Ten Hag’s position in the dressing room but it left his attack weakened as United failed to find a suitable replacement.

Amorim is seemingly taking a similar risk, having pushed Rashford away from his first-team plans after being left unimpressed with his work ethic.

The 27-year-old, who appeared one of the most promising players at the club in the very early days of Amorim’s reign, last featured for the Red Devils in mid-December in the Europa League.

Since then he has been left out of seven of United’s eight fixtures across all competitions. He hasn’t played for a single minute in that time.

United’s struggles going forward have raised some question marks over Amorim’s ruthless decision but it appears the Portuguese has no plans to hand Rashford another opportunity.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Rashford is in “serious danger of never playing” for United again as Amorim is keen to “offload him this week.”

United’s preference is to part ways with their academy product on a permanent basis this January but his staggering wages and concerning form have proven to be a huge obstacle in the club’s bid to offload him and boost their budget for potential incomings.

The Mancunians are open to letting him leave in a loan deal for the remainder of the season. Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, and Barcelona have all expressed interest in signing the high-profile forward on loan. It is understood his desire is to play for Barca.

However, GIVEMESPORT add that the United gaffer is not planning to offer Rashford a “route back into his plans” if he returns to the club in the summer.

The report adds that “influential figures are hopeful that Rashford will leave by Friday.”

United have been linked with a number of forwards but whether Rashford’s exit would prove to be enough to fund a move for a top quality goalscorer remains unclear.

Manchester United forward Geyse has expressed gratitude to her teammates for their support following her brother’s passing, which they showed during their 4-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Ella Toone scored a hat-trick on her Women’s Super League return from injury as United secured a thrilling derby victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Leah Galton also got on the score sheet, to ensure the Reds leapfrogged their rivals in the Women’s Super League standings.

Days before the match, United boss Marc Skinner confirmed that Geyse would not be available for selection as she was given some time off to deal with a tragedy in her family.

After the final match, the United squad posed for a picture with Geyse’s jersey. The club posted the message, “That one was for you, @Geyse_Ferreiraa.”

“Stay strong — we’re all thinking of you.”

In response, Geyse took to social media, confirming the heartbreaking news of her brother’s passing.

The Brazilian also wrote, “This has been one of the most difficult times of my life. The loss of my brother, Geovanne, left a void that words cannot fill.”

“But, amidst so much pain, I found strength in the love and support I received. I want to thank Manchester United, my teammates, the staff and all the friends who were by my side.”

“You not only respected my grief, but also gave me a collective hug that crossed any distance.”

“I am immensely grateful for every message, gesture and tribute. Knowing that I am not alone in this journey gives me the strength to move forward. Thank you for being my family far from home.”

“My brother will always be with me, and I am sure he felt embraced by all of you too.”

Skinner’s side are back in action on Wednesday when they face City in the quarter-final of the Women’s League Cup.

Borussia Dortmund have now approached Manchester United to explore the possibility of signing Marcus Rashford this month, as per reports.

After United’s defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion, Ruben Amorim addressed questions regarding his decision to yet again overlook Rashford while naming his matchday squad.

The Portuguese tactician underlined that the Englishman’s absence is due to his own choice. He hasn’t featured for United since mid-December.

Interestingly, on Monday evening, multiple outlets reported that sources close to the player insist Rashford wants to play for Amorim’s side.

It seems this uncertainty has only given the England international’s suitors more motivation to make a move for him this January.

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Dortmund are now in “direct contact” with United “about a loan deal” for Rashford.

            — Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 20, 2025

However, the 27-year-old’s astronomical salary continues to be a stumbling block. The financial package needed to secure his services for the remainder of the season would reportedly amount to around  €8-10million.

Further, some figures at the Bundesliga giants are concerned that Rashford’s arrival could cause problems on the pitch as he plays in the same position as Jamie Gittens.

The young left-winger, who left Manchester City’s academy for Dortmund in 2020, has emerged as one of the standout attackers in Germany, having directly played a part in 16 goals across all competitions this season.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are among the clubs interested in Gittens.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag could also have a big say in Rashford’s future as he could become Dortmund’s next manager amid Nuri Sahin’s failure to produce consistent results.

Rashford had the best season of his career under the Dutchman, scoring 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign. It is believed that Ten Hag is open to the idea of reuniting with the out-of-favour United forward in Germany.

Man Utd transfer: ‘Real reason’ for INEOS U-turn surfaces with exit ‘agreed’ amid ‘concern’ of Martial repeat

A new report has revealed the ‘real reason’ why Manchester United are letting £86m flop Antony join La Liga outfit Real Betis on loan.

The Brazil international has been a huge flop at Man Utd as he’s failed to live up to expectations following his £86m move from Ajax in 2022.

Antony was made United’s top target ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, but his dire form ensured he slipped in the pecking order before the Dutchman was sacked in October.

The winger has also barely featured under Ruben Amorim and it’s clear he is not part of the head coach’s plans. He has only made 14 appearances this season and has not made a single Premier League start.

The 24-year-old has been linked with several European and Saudi Pro League sides in recent months but Real Betis have emerged as his most likely destination.

READ: Nimble Brighton show why Manchester United remain anchored to depths under Ruben Amorim

It’s become increasingly apparent that he is going to join Real Betis and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Monday morning that this deal is ‘verbally agreed’.

He said: “Antony to Real Betis, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties with Man United too.

“Documents being checked; then time for travel and medical tests. United will let him leave on loan deal with 𝐧𝐨 buy clause. He’ll be formally back to United in June.”

A report from The Boot Room reveals the ‘real reason’ why Man Utd changed their stance on Antony’s exit after they were initially against a short-term exit amid one ‘concern’ with ‘the success’ of one player ‘convincing’ INEOS to sanction the deal.

              The report explained:

‘Manchester United, who have been wary of a short-term deal for Antony, have been partly convinced due to Vitor Roque’s success on loan from Barcelona at Real Betis.

‘Anthony Martial’s unsuccessful six-month loan spell at Sevilla is a key factor behind United being reticent about a similarly short-term deal involving the Brazilian international.

‘But with Roque becoming one of Manuel Pellegrini’s most trusted players this campaign, Ruben Amorim’s side now have a reason to believe that the former Ajax winger could also turn his career around at Betis.

‘Antony has been convinced by both Pellegrini and Roque to make the move to Spain. TBR Football understands that the FA Cup winner is of the belief that a move to the La Liga side could aid his redemption as he has managed to persuade the Red Devils to send him on out on loan.

‘The prospect of a permanent transfer to Real Betis does not lie in the Osasco-born forward’s destiny as the Spanish club do not have the finances to fund such a move.’

Chelsea ready to meet United’s £60m Garnacho valuation, deal could be completed quickly – report

Premier League rivals Chelsea are reportedly prepared to pay what Manchester United are demanding to part ways with winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho has been linked with a shock move away from United this month, with Chelsea and Napoli mentioned as the clubs with the strongest interest in signing him if he were to be made available for transfer.

The Argentine has been unable to find his feet under Ruben Amorim, even as United’s struggles on the pitch persist.

Amidst United’s desperate need to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, it has been suggested that a sum of £60million could convince the Red Devils to sanction Garnacho’s sale, even though they’re not actively looking to offload him.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently stated that Chelsea had made “direct contact” to explore the possibility of getting a deal for Garnacho over the line.

The forward’s agent fuelled further speculation that Garnacho could join the Blues before the end of the month after he posted a picture of himself at Stamford Bridge while in attendance for Chelsea’s Monday evening meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Now, according to a relatively reliable source on United news, MUFC Academy, Chelsea are poised to step up their pursuit of Garnacho.

MUFC Academy wrote on X, “Exclusive: Understand that Chelsea are willing to meet the demands of Alejandro Garnacho and Manchester United.”

“Just get them out!”: Rio Ferdinand urges United to urgently sell these three stars with a “cancerous, bad energy”

Rio Ferdinand has singled out three players that Manchester United must sell this month, insisting that the trio are having a detrimental effect on the dressing room.

This comes after United suffered their 10th Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter all found the back of the net to pile further misery on Ruben Amorim and his players. Bruno Fernandes scored United’s only goal of the afternoon.

After the final whistle, Amorim shockingly admitted that the current squad may be the worst in United’s history.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand named Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia as the three stars the club must urgently axe before transfer deadline day on February 3.

Earlier today, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Antony is set to seal a loan move to La Liga outfit Real Betis until the end of the season.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Malacia has been told by United to search for a new club while Rashford continues to be heavily linked with an exit, with several teams both from England and abroad thought to be keen on landing his signature.

However, Sky Sports relayed that Rashford’s Old Trafford departure is looking increasingly difficult due to the financial numbers involved in getting a deal over the line.

Ferdinand said about the three footballers, “I think Antony’s going, someone said to me, Real Betis or somewhere like that. Just get them out man!”

“Sorry, no, I’m just being honest. The more these type of guys are around, where there’s just a bad noise, they all want to go, they’re all happy to go – let’s just get them out. Let’s start afresh.”

The six-time Premier League winner added, “You know what it’s like, if there’s people who are unsettled in there and it’s not going to plan and they’re not happy, it spreads. It’s like a cancerous, bad energy.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Rangers in Europa League.

According to journalist David Ornstein, Manchester United are ‘in talks’ to sign Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu while two alternatives have been ruled out.

The Red Devils are yet to make a January signing as they have been focused on outgoings, but they are reportedly looking to sign Dorgu.

It has been widely reported that their priority is to sign a left wing-back as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have had to play out of position with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling with injuries.

With Ruben Amorim‘s side known to be in the market for a new wing-back, it’s hardly a surprise that they are linked with several potential targets and Dorgu has been mentioned.

The 20-year-old – who has been capped a couple of times for Denmark – has already made 47 appearances for Serie A outfit Lecce as he’s impressed over the past 18 months.

‘Discussions have begun over the 20-year-old as United line up options ahead of making decisions on ins and outs this month.

‘Nothing is yet agreed but dialogue is progressing with head coach Ruben Amorim keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.

‘He signed a new contract in October that runs until 2028. United’s squad is in need of more players suited to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation with Dorgu, who has featured on both flanks, seen as one of that profile.’

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has backed up this report and ruled out two alternatives, while journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed how much Dorgu could cost.

Romano revealed: “Manchester United are set to open formal talks with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu, no bid has been sent so far.

“As exclusively revealed two weeks ago, he’s high on Man United’s list as Kerkez and Nuno Mendes are both considered too expensive. Dorgu, 100% keen on the move.”

Jacobs added: “Patrick Dorgu on Manchester United’s radar, as previously reported.

“#MUFC now actively exploring a move, as @David_Ornstein called.

“Lecce have asked for €40m+ in the past but #MUFC hoping a deal possible for €25m-30m. No bid yet.”

A move for Mendes is unlikely as it’s emerged that the PSG star is set to sign a new contract to commit his future to the Ligue Un giants beyond 2026.

Since this update, it’s emerged that the Red Devils have their eye on Wolves star Rayan Ait-Nouri, who would be a more expensive alternative to Dorgu.

The agent of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has confirmed his attendance for Chelsea’s meeting at Stamford Bridge with Wolverhampton Wanderers, even as his client continues to be linked to the Blues.

Garnacho’s future at United has become increasingly uncertain after it was revealed that no player at the club is untouchable ahead of a squad rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli appear to be showing the strongest interest in Garnacho, with the youngster being tipped as a potential replacement for the departed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

While United are not actively looking to sell Garnacho, the club could be tempted to cash in if they were to receive a huge offer.

A sum of around £60million has been mentioned and the Red Devils will under no circumstances agree to a cut-price deal.

Last week, it emerged that Chelsea had opened talks over the possibility of signing Garnacho. This was also confirmed by David Ornstein, who relayed that Enzo Maresca’s side made enquiries about the Carrington academy graduate.

More recently, a report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that Chelsea made “direct contact” with the Red Devils to ask about the conditions of a deal.

Garnacho’s agent has added fuel to the fire after he posted an image of himself in attendance for Chelsea’s game against Wolves on Monday evening.

The United star’s representative took to Instagram, confirming his presence at Stamford Bridge.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, “Both Carlos Cambeiro and Quique De Lucas from Alejandro Garnacho’s Lead3rs agency are at Stamford Bridge this evening.”

“Garnacho one of the options Chelsea are considering.”

It might amount to nothing in the end, but the timing of Cambeiro’s social media post has only fueled speculation about Garnacho’s potential move to the London outfit.

However, if the Italian press are to be believed, Garnacho could be on the brink of joining Napoli. The 20-year-old’s transfer situation is one to keep a close eye on ahead of deadline day on February 3.

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Rangers in the Europa League.
