Fabrizio Romano confirms Napoli now in talks for Garnacho alternative amid stalemate in talks with United

Napoli have reportedly reached out to Borussia Dortmund over a potential move for Karim Adeyemi, as a deal for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho continues to prove difficult to get over the line.

Napoli are in desperate need of a left-sided winger following the £59m sale of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, and they’ve identified Garnacho as an ideal replacement.

Discussions between United and Napoli are ongoing over a January transfer that would see the Argentine join Antonio Conte’s side.

On Tuesday, it emerged that United lowered their asking price for Garnacho in a bid to reach a compromise with Napoli.

It was stated that the Red Devils now want €65m for Garnacho – €10m less than their initial €75m valuation of the forward. Meanwhile, Napoli value him at around €50m -55m, including bonuses.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, there was another meeting today between the two clubs but a breakthrough has yet to be reached.

“After the second meeting between the parties, there remains a distance between Napoli and Manchester United from an economic point of view.”

“The parties will meet again in the next few days with the aim of finding a financial agreement, with the Red Devils’ directors in the meantime leaving Milan to return to England.”

Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that Napoli are eyeing alternatives for Garnacho and are keen on Adeyemi.

Romano wrote on X, “Napoli have made contact with Borussia Dortmund today for Karim Adeyemi. Talks start with BVB open to January exit.”

“Negotiations for Alejandro Garnacho are still on but no agreement with Man United after first bid; Chelsea are also weighing up a formal proposal.”

Di Marzio has also corroborated this information.

“Given the stand-by in the negotiations with Garnacho, Napoli has resumed contacts for Adeyemi of Borussia Dortmund.”

“Talks ongoing with…”: United’s first major plan for the summer is revealed – report

Manchester United will “headline” the Premier League Summer Series for the first time with the pre-season tournament set to take place in the United States.

The Red Devils have shown a clear preference for choosing America as the home for the bulk of their pre-season tours in recent years, with the copious number of commercial opportunities afford by the US a massive boost to the club’s finances.

However, the gruelling nature of the travel involved for the players during a period, ostensibly, designed to get them as fit as possible has been questioned in the past.

But United are set to revisit the United States this summer with Craig Hope (Mail Sport) revealing, “Premier League chiefs are on the verge of securing the flagship addition of United for the first time as part of one of their official pre-season schedules.”

“The Old Trafford club were not involved in the inaugural Summer Series on the US East Coast in 2023, and they never took part in nine iterations of the Asia Trophy between 2003 and 2019.”

Tweet: “Manchester United set to headline Premier League Summer Series in United States. East Coast likely for venues & talks ongoing with other clubs, but MUFC participation a coup for PL.”

Hope further reveals the tournament is “likely to kick off towards the end of July” with the East Coast “likely for venues”.

The addition of the England’s biggest club to the preseason tournament is a huge win for Premier League bosses with United ensuring “as good as guarantee sold-out stadiums wherever they play”.

There is always an interesting battle between the football interests of a club and the inevitable commercial demands required to fund them.

United will be improved by Ruben Amorim being buttressed with a significant transfer war chest this summer and one important means of achieving this is a profitable preseason tour. As is often the case in other walks of life, America equates to profit in footballing terms.

However, a draining tour covering the full length of America, which is more of a continent than a country, is a negative for Amorim and his squad given the number of PR responsibilities that will be included in this journey.

There is a balance to be struck, therefore, between the economic benefits off the pitch a preseason in the US produces, versus the detriment it incurs on the pitch for the players.

Fabrizio Romano: United plan sensational return for former academy star to solve Amorim’s biggest headache

Manchester United are considering re-signing Alvaro Carreras to solve the team’s ongoing weakness in the left wingback position as an alternative to Lecce star Patrick Dorgu, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

Dorgu, 20, has emerged as the Red Devils’ priority transfer heading into the final period of the January window after an approach to reunite Ruben Amorim with Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes appears to have been unsuccessful.

United have seen an opening bid worth in excess of £23 million rejected by Lecce for the Danish international but reports suggest the club will return with an improved offer close to £30 million.

The Italian side are believed to be holding out for £34 million for Dorgu but Old Trafford officials are willing to walk away from negotiations if their next bid is rejected.

But Romano reveals there are “no doubts” that United will sign a “new LWB” before the deadline on February 3.

🚨🔴 Manchester United will sign a new LWB, no doubts. Talks for Patrick Dorgu continue after €27m bid rejected.

The Italian transfer guru suggests that while the priority remains Dorgu, former United starlet Carreras is also on the “list” of options for the wingback position should talks with Lecce falter.

The 21-year-old Spaniard was sold by the Reds in the summer to Benfica in a deal worth a potential €9 million, after Carreras spent the second half of last season on loan at the Portuguese giant.

Benfica were impressed by the fullback’s performances and chose to activate the buy clause agreed with United in the loan deal.

And it has proven an astute decision as Carreras has gone from strength to strength since the loan became a permanent deal, delivering a number of brilliant displays at left-back for his new team. In fact, the young Spanish defender has even produced a more eye-catching season than Dorgu from a statistical perspective.

        https://t.co/zJCZF2GU5I pic.twitter.com/AKXN22Jnxm

        — Z (@ZAYN_Z7) January 22, 2025

Carreras’ contract at Benfica includes a £42 million release clause, though United have a reported buy-back clause worth under £16 million enabling the club to strike a bargain deal if they choose.

However, this would also rely on Carreras’ agreeing to a return to Old Trafford with the 21-year-old believed to harbour aspirations of playing for Barcelona, who he produced a brilliant display against last night in a thrilling Champions League match.

Perhaps this reticence from the Spaniard to re-join United is a reason why the club are targeting other options for the wingback position, despite Carreras’ brilliant form in Portugal.

Video: Amorim favourite spotted back in United training just in time for Rangers game

Manchester United have kept only one clean sheet in 15 games since Ruben Amorim’s arrival with the defence leaking goals in every game.

There was finally good news on the defensive front for the Portuguese on Wednesday with the club confirming that Victor Lindelof is back in training just in time for the Europa League game against Rangers on Thursday.

The Swede will almost feel like a new signing at this point, having made only two appearances under his former Benfica teammate due to injury.

His first start under Amorim came against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-final with the 30-year-old not even lasting 45 minutes before he picked up yet another injury.

          Lindelof back from injury

He was spotted on the grass in high spirits along with the rest of the group which also included Marcus Rashford and Antony which is likely to mean he is close to a return to action.

Whether that will come against Rangers remains to be seen. Amorim will provide clarity during the pre-match press conference which will be covered by this website.

          — Manchester United (@ManUtd) January 22, 2025

The Sweden international’s poor injury record has seen him miss 20 games already this season and despite his close bond with the head coach, United are unlikely to offer him a new contract with his current one ending in 2025.

The former Benfica ace’s injury problems have restricted him to just 339 minutes of action across nine appearances in all competitions, and the club cannot afford to carry passengers.

          Contract ends in 2025

There was talk of him leaving in the summer but a toe injury sustained during pre-season and his wage demands meant plenty of teams exited the race.

Former interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was credited with an interest in taking the centre-back from Manchester to Leicester City in January which would have provided the Red Devils the chance to recoup a small fee.

But as relayed by The Peoples Person, the 30-year-old is not interested in fighting in a relegation scrap at this stage of his career.

There has been interest from Serie A as well as Turkey and those could represent better options once Lindelof’s contract gets over.

Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag ‘linked’ with return to management following European sacking

Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag ‘linked’ with return to management following European sacking

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be in line for a swift return to management following the sacking of Nuri Sahin.

The former Liverpool midfielder departed Borussia Dortmund after a terrible run of form that has left them in 10th place in the Bundesliga and 13th in the Champions League.

Last night’s 2-1 defeat to Bologna was the final straw after Dortmund had initially taken the lead only to throw it away just two minutes late in the game.

Following his dismissal, Sahin said in a statement: “Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best.”

The Dortmund sporting director, Lars Ricken, said they had “lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals” under Sahin. “This decision hurts me personally,” Ricken said, “but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sky Germany has revealed that the Dutchman has been ‘shadow coaching’ for weeks and has a strong relationship with Dortmund’s advisor and former captain Matthias Samme which could see him installed as boss.

With Sahin’s tenure from the start of the season until now proving to be a sordid affair, Ten Hag would hope he can turn around their form which has seen just 12 wins in 27 games in charge, with 11 losses.

Ten Hag’s successes as a coach

While his Man United tenure was highly publicised and criticised, there were moments of success across his tenure that included two domestic trophies.

Across the EFL Cup and FA Cup, he boasted a record of 17 wins in 21 matches, beating Newcastle United in 2023 and Manchester City in 2024.

He helped guide them to 3rd place in the 2022-23 season but fell to a disappointing eighth place the following season – which followed on into the current campaign.

Before that, he built an incredible Ajax team which was full of young football talent that played football in the ‘Ajax way’. They stunned football fans with their 2018-2019 Champions League campaign as their run to the semi-finals was nothing short of mesmerising.

After beating Juventus and Real Madrid, they looked set to reach a historic final but Tottenham produced one of the moments of the decade to score in the dying seconds to deny them a meeting with Liverpool.

He then went on to pick up two more Dutch league titles and a Dutch cup before leaving Ajax for United and there is enough young potential in Dortmund’s squad to make it an exciting potential opportunity.

Dortmund’s stars linked with the Premier League

While Sahin failed to get a consistent tune out of his squad, there are plenty of players that have been linked with moves to England. Winger Jamie Gittens has been in great form on the left wing this season and has attracted attention from Chelsea and Man United.

Karim Adeyemi has been linked with an assortment of clubs given his pace and attacking qualities. Liverpool, Chelsea and United have been listed as potential destinations for the attacker.

United prepare bid “worth close to £30m” for game-changing 20yo star wanted by Europe’s elite – report

Manchester United are reportedly poised to make a “fresh offer worth close to £30million” for Patrick Dorgu after Lecce rejected their opening bid for the Danish international.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, the Red Devils saw an offer worth £23 million plus add-ons turned down by the Italian club yesterday as United officials search for a new left wingback to fix a key weakness in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Serie A leaders Napoli are also reported to be interested in Dorgu, whose unique pairing of pace and physicality makes him an outstanding option as a flying wingback.

Lecce will be acutely aware of the growing interest in their Danish starlet and keen to initiate a bidding war between contingents in Manchester and Naples, explaining why are they holding firm over their £34 million valuation of Dorgu.

However, United plan to test this resolve with an improved offer much closer Lecce’s demand but could potentially walk away from negotiations if it’s not accepted, Give Me Sport reveals.

The report states, “Manchester United are set to test Lecce’s resolve with an increased bid for Patrick Dorgu after arranging to hold further discussions over a potential move to Old Trafford on Wednesday.”

“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United have indicated they are poised to head back to the negotiating table with a fresh offer worth close to £30million for Dorgu, having had their opening proposal in the region of £25million including add-ons rejected on Tuesday night, but they may walk away if their next bid is not accepted.

“Lecce rewarded their left-back with a new contract in October, which allows him to pocket in excess of £10,000-per-week at the Stadio Via del Mare, but he has remained the subject of widespread interest as admirers aim to bolster their respective squads midway through the campaign.”

There is “confidence” that a deal will be struck, however, with Dorgu reported to have already agreed terms with United over a move to Old Trafford.

The report reveals, “Dorgu wants to complete a January move to Old Trafford, in a significant boost for Manchester United, and GMS sources recently revealed he has a verbal pact to leave Lecce if a big club comes calling and lodges a suitable offer ahead of the winter transfer window slamming shut.”

The 20-year-old’s positional versatility is an attractive asset to Amorim in the United manager’s 3-4-3 system. Dorgu has often been deployed on the right-wing for Lecce this season, despite having been a left-sided defender – capable of playing left-back and left wing-back – for most of his fledging career.

United have struggled on both flanks in the wingback position since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP in November and the prospect of a young, athletic option capable of providing a solution down the left and right-hand sides of the pitch will be a welcome relief for the 39-year-old coach.

United star speaks out about team’s reaction to Amorim’s dressing room rant after Brighton game

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim was accompanied by Harry Maguire for the pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League game against Rangers.

And the centre-back was naturally asked about the Portuguese’s comment on this squad being the worst in the club’s history following their home defeat to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend.

And the Englishman was candid with his response, as he refused to go against what the coach said, instead accepting that the players needed to do a lot more to come out of this mess.

“I think as players, we were frustrated and disappointed, coming on the back of a good away performance and beating Southampton. We have to look at ourselves and take responsibility.” Amorim did clarify his stance later during the same press conference.

                Maguire on poor form

The 31-year-old was asked about what the players could do to turn their fortunes around to which the England international replied that the players are individually quite good but need to work together as a team to take the club out of their current predicament.

“If I could explain it, we would change it straight away. Like you said, we have players who have played numerous games internationally and have won lots of trophies in club football.

“But we’re not playing well enough as a team at the moment and the league shows that. We need to stop looking for excuses and it’s really important as an individual you improve yourself.”

Amorim has previously stated that Maguire is a leader on and off the pitch and his good displays in a back three have seen him earn a contract extension.

The former skipper was asked whether losing the captaincy has freed him and allowed him to express himself more freely on the pitch, especially in the aftermath of brutal trolling on social media.

                Maguire on leadership

Maguire denied these statements, and revealed that he always prides himself as a leader and claimed that United legends such as Wayne Rooney and David Beckham had seen even worse but they never cowered down and neither will he.

“I wouldn’t put it down to that, whether I’m captain or not, I see myself as a leader in this group of player. I’m experienced and now playing for this club, there are ups and downs.

“It’s part and parcel of playing for this club. I look at previous players and the likes of Rooney and Beckham, they had a large amount of scrutiny on them and they’re world-class players.

“It is a huge privilege and honour to represent this club and the scrutiny is a part and parcel of playing for this great club and I would not have it any other way.”

The England international showed his leadership qualities when Joshua Zirkzee was going through a tough time when he was booed off the pitch by the Old Trafford crowd in the first half of the game against Newcastle.

“I sent him a private message after the (Newcastle) game. Listen, Joshua is a good player – you don’t play for this club if you’re not a good player. We have amazing fans who stick with us through thick and thin. It’s not about individuals.”

Finally, Amorim said in the press conference that the players were nervous while playing at Old Trafford due to their poor home record and Maguire responded to that by stating that small margins have not been going in their favour but the players will not stop trying to correct this moving forward.

                Nerves at home?

“No, we spoke about the first goal at Old Trafford and it’s not teams are coming and opening us up and breaking us down. The game against Brighton was 50/50, it could have gone either way and we need to stop giving away the first goal.

“Football games are defined by small margins. We know things can turn and tomorrow is a chance to go out there and put on a performance.”

The Rangers game under the lights at The Theatre of Dreams represents a great chance to prove that this team can handle the pressure.

Europe represents the club’s best chance at qualifying for the Champions League next season and despite their woeful league form, the Red Devils are one of five sides still unbeaten in this year’s Europa League.

A win could take United closer to automatic qualification, something Amorim desperately wants. Now for the players to respond.

Ten Hag’s surprise plan for a “return to football” rules out Rashford reunion at Dortmund – The Athletic

Ten Hag’s surprise plan for a “return to football” rules out Rashford reunion at Dortmund – The Athletic

Erik ten Hag has “no plans” to return as a coach at present despite the former Manchester United manager being hotly linked with Borussia Dortmund following Nuri Sahin’s dismissal.

The Dutchman has been spotted at the Signal Iduna Park in recent weeks watching the Bundesliga side in action, leading Florian Plettenberg (Sky Sports Germany) to unusually describe the 54-year-old as the “shadow coach” for Sahin.

While this term is unclear in what it entails, it fuelled rumours that Ten Hag was set to take over at Dortmund with the Dutch coach the “favourite” for the position.

And there was an added twist to this from a United perspective, as Dortmund are one of the leading contenders in the race to sign Marcus Rashford on loan this month, despite the 27-year-old’s wage packet proving a major obstacle to any move.

Rashford revealed he was “ready for a new challenge” last month in an explosive interview which has subsequently seen him dropped from the first-team by Ruben Amorim – Ten Hag’s replacement at Old Trafford.

United are open to this departure with a loan move deemed the only feasible exit given Rashford’s exorbitant wages and complete lack of form.

And Dortmund are interested a move for the forward in a similar fashion to the one agreed last January for Jadon Sancho.

However, Liga giants Barcelona are considered the favourites to win the race for Rashford with the English forward believed to have made the Spanish club his first-choice option if a deal can be struck which satisfies United.

Regardless, the prospect of an unlikely reunion in Germany for Ten Hag and Rashford – a ludicrous thought just 18 months ago, following their successful 2022/23 campaign together – would have demonstrated how quickly things can change in football.

But Laurie Whitwell (The Athletic) has rejected the potential of Ten Hag taking over Dortmund at present as the Dutchman has “no plans to return to football at this time and will instead assess his options in the summer.”

This does not rule out the possibility Ten Hag may agree to take over Die Schwarzgelben in five month’s time, but Whitwell’s sources – described as “close the Dutchman” – appear adamant he will not be returning to management prior to that point.

It would be a sensible option for Ten Hag to pick, however, given his close relationship with Dortmund chief Matthias Sammer, the rapid scope for improvement of an underperforming side, and the open nature of football in the Bundesliga lending itself to the type of football the Dutchman sought to implement in the Premier League.

Marcus Rashford has returned to first-team training at Carrington as the Manchester United squad prepare for tomorrow night’s Europa League match against Rangers.

The 27-year-old forward has not played for the Red Devils since an explosive interview last month following his omission from the match against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Three days after the derby, journalist Henry Winter released an interview with Rashford in which he revealed he wanted to leave Old Trafford in search of a “new challenge”.

Ruben Amorim had revealed the reason why Rashford was dropped for the City game was “not a disciplinary thing.” Rather, the Portuguese coach expanded, it was due to the 27-year-old, along with fellow attacker Alejandro Garnacho, failing to reach the “incredibly high standards” Amorim expects all of his players to abide by.

“It’s not a disciplinary thing. Next week it’s a new week, new life. It’s how you dress, how you eat and how you interact with your team mates. When people in the club are losing their jobs, we have to push our standards incredibly high.”

“Next week if they train well like the others. It’s the same for everyone. They will play or be on the bench. It was not a disciplinary thing. We have to improve our standards inside and outside the pitch. It was a normal week.”

However, Garnacho has since been reinstated into the first-team after clearly listening to the advice of his head coach.

Rashford, by comparison, declared his intention to leave his boyhood club, rather than buckle down and fight for his place in the team.

Amorim, understandably, would not have been impressed by this response to his challenge to Rashford to improve; as a result, the 27-year-old has not been played under the Portuguese coach since this gauntlet was laid down. Rashford was included in the match day squad against Newcastle on December 30 but this was solely down to an injury crisis reducing the first-team to its bare bones.

Old Trafford officials are open to Rashford’s departure this month with a loan move seen as the most feasible arrangement, given the forward’s lack of form and exorbitant wage bill.

AC Milan emerged as an early front runner but other European rivals, including Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, have also joined the race. And it appears Rashford’s preference is Camp Nou with the Liga giants keen to add him to Hansi Flick’s talented forward line, if finances allow.

However, Barcelona’s economic situation is an ongoing struggle with El Blaugrana seeming to scrape through transfer window to transfer window by activating every conceivable ‘level’ in the club’s structure to continue signing players.

It remains to be seen whether the Spanish side will be able to find the funds to be able to finance a move for Rashford, despite the 27-year-old’s preference to swap Manchester for Barcelona.

And it’s perhaps this reason why Rashford was spotted in full first-team training today as Amorim oversaw his side’s preparations for tomorrow night’s match at Old Trafford. Whether the forward will actually be included in the match-day squad is another question entirely, however.

If Rashford does step foot on the pitch to face Rangers it suggests that maybe, just maybe, there is a potential way back into the fold at United under Amorim and the expectation of “high standards” is beginning to be met.

Manchester United have reached a “basic agreement” with Patrick Dorgu over a January move, as per reports.

United’s left-flank has caused Ruben Amorim the biggest headache in his early days at Old Trafford.

In the deeper area, Amorim is struggling to find a wing-back to effectively implement his tactical ideas.

With Luke Shaw out of the picture due to his fitness struggles and Tyrell Malacia seemingly considered not good enough, the Portuguese tactician has been forced to rely on Diogo Dalot. However, the right-back has looked out of place on the opposite flank.

Accordingly, the club’s hierarchy are now pushing to sign a new wing-back for Amorim.

In recent days, Dorgu has emerged as the club’s top target and the Premier League giants have already held talks with Lecce to secure the player’s services.

The Serie A outfit are playing hardball over their star player, who has played as a right-winger, right-back, left-back, and left wing-back, for them this season.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the Red Devils made an offer worth €30m plus potential bonuses of €5m, but Lecce have turned down their proposal.

However, Dorgu has now reportedly reached a “basic agreement” to move to Old Trafford.

Tottenham Hotspur are also understood to be in the race for the 20-year-old Dane but it seems United have taken the lead as far as the player’s stance is concerned.

They are not too far from meeting Lecce’s demands either, as it’s claimed the Italian outfit want a fee in the region of €40m.

However, the bigger obstacle appears to be Lecce’s desire to keep Dorgu at the club until the end of the season, on loan from United.
