“Thank you but no thank you”: United made failed last-minute attempt to hijack PL club’s loan deal for 20-yo star – report

Manchester United reportedly made a last-minute effort to hijack Ipswich Town’s loan deal for Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Julio Enciso.

Enciso is set to join Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich for the remainder of the season. The Athletic reports that the transfer does not include an option to buy and Ipswich will over his wages in full.

The player decided to join the Tractor Boys in search of playing time, which he found had to come by at the Amex Stadium.

Enciso came off the bench in stoppage time during Brighton’s 3-1 victory over United last Sunday.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, there were several clubs interested in Enciso, including Atalanta and United, with the latter keen on him as a potential replacement for Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho is looking increasingly likely to be on his way out of Old Trafford this month amidst strong links to Napoli and Chelsea.

TMW reveal, “In recent days there has also been contact between Manchester United and Brighton to discuss Enciso. With Garnacho potentially leaving in the final days of the transfer market, the Red Devils are exploring the market for a possible replacement.”

“And there was an attempt for the Paraguayan when, however, the agreement for his temporary transfer to Ipswich had already been defined. Out of time.”

This is backed up by journalist Christian Martin who told Paraguay’s Versus, “What I can tell you is that at the last minute of yesterday’s day, a call from Manchester United arrived.”

“Manchester United wanted Julio to be potentially the replacement in case Garnacho goes to Napoli or another club, there are several interested, Garnacho has had a problem with Amorim.”

“The situation is not the same in the club that he grew up, Garnacho has been playing for many years as a youth player and immediately came the call from the United board to attempt Julio.”

Martin added, “The answer of the Paraguayan, thank you but no thank you, I want to play.”

“Julio turns 21 tomorrow, we are already talking about a Paraguayan boy on the other side of the world in the most competitive league that is fighting for his future and really say no to Borussia Dortmund, say no to Manchester United, say no to Valencia, prioritise that, playing, he wants to play from the start.”

“Manchester United quería que Enciso sea el reemplazo de Garnacho”

Julio Enciso decidió no jugar en el Manchester United porque priorizó tener continuidad.

Romano confirms Man Utd signing as alternative ‘option’ is on Ruben Amorim’s list

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Man Utd will sign a new left-back this month and have Benfica star Alvaro Carreras on their list.

Ruben Amorim has overseen a difficult start to life as United manager and the January window is a crucial moment to strengthen ahead of the second half of the season.

With his system utilising wing-backs, injuries to Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have left him struggling to truly implement his style which was hugely successful in Portugal with Sporting.

One player who United have a buy-back clause in place with is Benfica’s Carreras, who developed in their academy and who has starred for Benfica this season.

He produced an excellent attacking performance against Barcelona in the 5-4 epic in the Champions League last night, recording one assist and producing plenty of moments of quality on the left-hand-side.

Taking to X, Romano confirmed the latest surrounding United’s pursuit of a left-back signing – and he teased good news across the next week.

‘Manchester United will sign a new LWB, no doubts. Talks for Patrick Dorgu continue after €27m bid rejected.

‘Lecce insist on €40m fee as they’re aware of Napoli interest for July.

‘United also have more options in list including Alvaro Carreras with €18m buy back clause.’

Speaking after the game, Carreras was quizzed over whether he would be open to a move to Spain after impressing against the La Liga leaders.

“No. In truth, we never know, but I have a long-term contract here at Benfica, I’m happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow and I owe them everything.”

      Carreras is the ‘perfect’ signing

Having previously developed in their academy, United currently have a buy-back clause in place to sign the Benfica star should they wish to activate it.

Previously, he had been described as the ‘perfect Ruben Amorim signing’ by StatmanDave and his figures compared to players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues and the European competitions show he could well be the real deal.

He ranks in the 96th percentile or above for key metrics such as switches, ball recoveries, successful take-on percentage, touches in the defensive third and interceptions.

The 21-year-old Spaniard spent three years developing in Real Madrid’s academy before United brought him to theirs in 2020 and he has an excellent range of technical skills that would help elevate Amorim’s current system.

Man Utd eye shock bid for Man City star as ‘reason’ for Garnacho departure isgiven

Man Utd eye shock bid for Man City star as ‘reason’ for Garnacho departure isgiven

Man Utd could make a shock bid for Man City winger Jack Grealish with Alejandro Garnacho set to leave Old Trafford, according to reports.

The Red Devils have had a terrible first half of the season with Ruben Amorim unable to turn things around after replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag in November.

Amorim’s side had put a couple of good performances against Liverpool and Arsenal recently but two poor displays against Southampton – although they won 3-1 – and Brighton have squeezed the positive energy out of many Man Utd fans.

Yankuba Minteh put Brighton ahead against Man Utd at Old Trafford on Sunday before Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty to bring the Red Devils level before half-time.

But Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter scored two second-half goals to give Brighton a 3-1 win and see Man Utd remain 13th in the Premier League table.

Man Utd are hoping to provide Amorim with some reinforcements but it’s understood that they will have to sell before they buy anyone in the January transfer window.

One player who is attracting lots of interest is Garnacho with the Man Utd winger the subject of a bid from Napoli, while Tottenham and Chelsea are also reportedly keen on his services.

And if the Red Devils look to bring in a player to replace Garnacho, it could be Man City winger Grealish, with The Sun claiming that Man Utd could make a shock offer for the ex-Aston Villa star with Amorim’s side one of the clubs holding active interest in his services.

The Daily Mail insist that Garnacho is a great trainer and a good character around the training complex with Man Utd only thinking about selling him because of ‘his value’.

        The report claims:

‘The answer lies in his value and the fact that, as determined as he has been to adapt to the demands of Amorim in the short time they have had working together, his new boss does not believe he has the defensive discipline to be converted into a wing-back – as has been done with Amad Diallo – and that he is not a natural No 10. As such, there is no place for him.

‘Against Southampton last week Garnacho started as one of the two No 10s and often found himself looking back to Amorim on the sidelines for reassurance. Even then, he ended up drifting wide to the left before Amorim barked at him to come back inside.

‘Under Amorim, Garnacho has played 14 times, starting just six. He has scored one goal and had one assist, with his influence on games is waning now that he cannot play to his strengths as an orthodox left winger.

‘He is a player fading into the background where once the Old Trafford pitch, and that left wing, was his centre stage.

‘His future may well be taken out of his hands and decided in boardrooms in Manchester, London or Naples, but before the trigger is pulled United would do well to heed the advice of Ten Hag.

‘The reason United are considering selling him is down to his value, and that there is currently no place for him in Amorim’s team.’

Video: Amorim shows his true colours with classy moment spotted during training session at Carrington

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim had a nice moment with an eight-year-old boy, who was invited to watch first-team training.

United trained at Carrington earlier today ahead of Thursday’s Europa League fixture against Rangers.

Members of the press were in attendance to watch the players going through their paces.

Ahead of every European clash, as per Uefa protocol, the media are invited to attend an open training session at United’s training complex.

The pre-match press conference follows soon after.

Marcus Rashford trained with the main group and may be reinstated to the team by Amorim. Also present was Victor Lindelof, who has just returned from a spell on the sidelines with an injury.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were also spotted at Carrington. Garnacho continues to be linked with a January exit, with Napoli and Chelsea interested in sighing him. Meanwhile, Antony is on the brink of completing a loan move to La Liga outfit Real Betis.

As the session was going on, Amorim was seen interacting with an eight-year-old member of United’s academy.

It’s understood that the boy is recovering from a broken leg and was invited by Amorim to watch the first team train, as a means to cheer him up.

He watched United’s superstars alongside assistant boss Carlos Fernandes.

Other members of the coaching staff were also receptive to him and chatted with him.

The act is yet another instance of Amorim’s class and outstanding character. The moment is also likely to bode well for the academy starlet as he steps up his recovery.

United vs. Rangers kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

United plotting sensational late loan move for Barcelona’s “next Lionel Messi”, could be a game-changer – report

Manchester United have struggled massively in front of goal this campaign and have scored a mere 27 goals in 22 games with only five teams scoring fewer than them this season.

The club’s No 9 Rasmus Hojlund has not scored in over a month now while summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has looked more of a link-up player than a ruthless finisher.

To make matters worse, both goalscoring wingers — Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho seem to be on their way out in this window. With the club languishing in 13th position in the league, Ruben Amorim has asked INEOS for reinforcements.

The Portuguese initially asked for his former Sporting Lisbon protege Viktor Gyokeres but a mid-season move is unlikely owing to the price involved as well as the coach’s promise to his former employers.

            United need goalscorers

With both the Mancunian and Argentine leaving it very late to secure exits, the Red Devils could be forced into hasty decisions and Givemesport have claimed they could be forced into a late loan deal for a Barcelona prodigy.

Rashford’s move to the Catalan giants has been held up due to Ansu Fati’s reluctance to leave but should United offer him a short-term contract, the Spaniard would find it hard to turn down.

While the 20-time English league champions would prefer only permanent incomings instead of short-term loans, they are being forced to keep their options open in case of any deadline day madness.

“Players like Barcelona’s Ansu Fati could yet emerge as short-term solutions to bolster the squad for the remainder of the season.

“While Fati’s availability will become clearer in the coming days, he offers proven quality without the long-term commitment of a permanent deal.

Fati emerging as surprise loan option

“Manchester United sources insist a straight loan would not be tempting as the club would prefer players who fit into a long-term strategy rather than temporary stop gaps. But they may have to reconsider such a stance if they are desperately searching for talent in the final days of the window.”

It is clear to see why the Camp Nou outfit want the 22-year-old gone with Fati not registering a single goal or assist so far this campaign.

INEOS will find him an alluring option due to the Spain international’s age and his Premier League experience. He was at Brighton on loan last season. And he can operate on both flanks, which is another bonus.

Not too long ago, he was being hailed as the “next Lionel Messi” but injuries have robbed him of chances and he might be forced to look elsewhere, whether it be United or some other club, for regular minutes.

Man Utd transfer: ‘Increased’ offer plan surfaces amid Tottenham hijack threat as INEOS will ‘walk away’

According to reports, Manchester United have ‘indicated’ that they are ‘making an increased bid’ to sign Lecce star Patrick Dorgu.

The Red Devils have been focused on outings this month as INEOS look to raise funds for potential signings, but they could make a couple of additions before the transfer window closes.

Ruben Amorim‘s priority is to sign a natural left wing-back and Dorgu has reportedly emerged as one of their preferred options.

The 20-year-old has already made 56 appearances for Serie A outfit Lecce since breaking through for his boyhood club at the start of last season.

The Denmark international has four goal involvements in his 20 Serie A outings this term and his performances have not gone unnoticed.

Man Utd are reportedly leading the race to sign Dorgu and have a ‘basic agreement’ in place, though they have to iron out a couple of issues to complete a deal.

READ: Man Utd ‘dream’ January transfer window involves 13 deals in 13 days and signing three left-backs

Man Utd and Lecce remain apart on Dorgu’s valuation, but a report from GiveMeSport claims they have ‘indicated they are set to make an improved bid for Dorgu’.

While it’s noted that they are ‘set to test Lecce’s resolve with an improved bid’, it is also revealed that they are willing to ‘walk away’ amid competition from Napoli and Tottenham Hotspur.

              The report explains.

‘GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United have indicated they are poised to head back to the negotiating table with a fresh offer worth close to £30million for Dorgu, having had their opening proposal in the region of £25million including add-ons rejected on Tuesday night, but they may walk away if their next bid is not accepted.’

‘Although the Serie A strugglers have been seeking close to £34million – which is more than Manchester United are prepared to pay for Dorgu – GMS sources have been told there is confidence that all parties can reach an agreement for less than that figure, and it has resulted in Red Devils holding further talks on Wednesday.

‘Amorim has been facing stiff competition to recruit the Denmark international as Tottenham Hotspur have also been among the sides keeping tabs on his situation after being forced to contend with Destiny Udogie sustaining a hamstring injury which could keep him out of action until March, while Napoli are prepared to loan him straight back if they win the race.

‘But Dorgu wants to complete a January move to Old Trafford, in a significant boost for Manchester United, and GMS sources recently revealed he has a verbal pact to leave Lecce if a big club comes calling and lodges a suitable offer ahead of the winter transfer window slamming shut.’

“Proposals”: “World-class” United superstar could be heading to surprise destination, Ineos will be overjoyed – report

Due to Manchester United’s precarious PSR situation, INEOS have been forced to focus on outgoings first before delving into the recruitment side of things.

While they have placed almost the entire squad up for sale, the co-owners have found it hard to shift big-name stars such as Casemiro in this window.

It seemed like the Brazilian was headed to Saudi Arabia with Cristiano Ronaldo keen to reunite with his former teammate at Al-Nassr.

However, the defensive midfielder’s wage and contract demands seem to have scuppered the move with The Peoples Person relaying that a January exit to the Saudi Pro League is off the cards.

MLS move on the cards for Casemiro

As a result, the 32-year-old is expected to remain at Old Trafford till the end of the season and as Givemesport have now claimed, the Brazilian could be set for a move to the other side of the Atlantic instead of the Middle East.

A move to Major League Soccer could represent his next career move with the former Real Madrid superstar starting to receive offers from MLS clubs.

“Casemiro is Manchester United’s top earner and although there was talk of him earning over £600,000-a-week with a move to Saudi Arabia, a mega payday in the Middle East has not come to fruition.

“There is certainly a chance he could make such a move this year but, equally, some sources believe Major League Soccer might even emerge as a serious prospect as the “world-class” Brazilian is starting to receive proposals from across the Atlantic.”

                Not part of Amorim’s plans

United would have preferred to move him on immediately due to his humongous wages of £350,000 gross per week (via capology) but it seems they are stuck with him for now.

Unfortunately, his prospects on the pitch are also not looking that bright with the Brazil international not a part of Amorim’s plans moving forward.

The five-time Champions League winner has started only four games under the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss but is yet to complete 90 minutes, while in his most recent league start, he failed to cope with the coach’s demand for intensity.

Casemiro’s contract with United is valid until 2026 with the club paying £60 million for his services a couple of years ago. And INEOS will have to bear the brunt of that ill-fated decision with the player’s sale likely to earn the club only a fraction of that amount.

“I owe everything to them”: 21-yo addresses transfer speculation, United could sign him for €18m

Former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras has addressed transfer speculation linking him with a move away from Benfica.

United are in desperate need of a new left-sided wing-back amid Ruben Amorim’s struggles to effectively implement his 3-4-3 system that relies heavily on its wing-backs for width and creativity.

Luke Shaw has remained out of contention due to his persistent injury struggles. Meanwhile, Tyrell Malacia and Diogo Dalot have failed to impress Amorim.

Nearly a year ago, the Mancunians had the talented Carreras on their books but they allowed him to join Benfica on loan and handed the Portuguese side an option to sign him on a permanent basis.

Benfica exercised that option without much ado, and now the Spain U21 international is making headlines with his impressive performances in the Liga Portugal and the Champions League, leading to interest from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

On Tuesday, he again found himself under the spotlight after delivering a promising display in his side’s 5-4 defeat at the hands of Barca.

Carreras emerged as a constant threat throughout the night and even registered an assist.

After the full-time whistle, he was asked about the possibility of a move on the back of the brilliant showing against the Spanish giants.

The 21-year-old told DAZN in Portugal (Sport Witness): “No. Actually, you never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I’m happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow, and I owe everything to them.”

The left-back’s former club United are also believed to be in the mix.

While shining a light on the Premier League side’s pursuit of Patrick  Dorgu, Fabrizio Romano wrote: “United also have more options in list including Alvaro Carreras with €18m buy back clause.”

For now, though, it seems United are focusing on signing the Leece full-back, having already reached a “basic agreement” with the player over a January move.

Video: Summer signing feeling the heat at United, claims it is the most pressure he has ever felt

Matthijs de Ligt has confirmed that the pressure at Manchester United is the highest he has ever felt in his career, and currently it is “a lot more negative than positive.”

Speaking to Dion Dublin on Football Focus, the Dutchman spoke about his career so far, which has already seen him play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

He said: “Man United fit really well with the clubs I have been at already. Ajax, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, they are all the same bracket.”

The fact that he has played for all these top sides and is still only 25 years old was cited by some pundits as a cause for concern rather than an indication of his quality, but the defender says he is used to such kinds of pressure.

“At every club that I have played, the pressure has been really high,” he said. “To be fair at United, it is perhaps the highest it has been especially because United is still, and historically, the biggest club in England.”

De Ligt was part of a raft of signings delivered to former manager Erik ten Hag by INEOS in their first transfer window in charge of football matters at Old Trafford.

But the feel-good factor quickly dissipated as Ten Hag’s tough start to the season saw him get sacked and was replaced by Ruben Amorim, who himself is having a rough ride.

De Ligt said: “The way we have performed this year, we know, has not been good enough so what happens then is that the pressure becomes bigger and bigger and bigger so you feel it more.

“It is a lot more negative than positive and you can feel it as a player.”

The Netherlands international has long been linked with United, as far back as his breakout season at Ajax, but says he is glad he took the scenic route to arrive at Old Trafford.

“The only thing that I am happy about is that I didn’t make the step from Ajax to here because maybe it would have been too much. It is similar to when I was in Italy in those first three months, I could not make a mistake because I was signed for £75m.”

United forked out £43 million to sign De Ligt from Bayern Munich in the summer, and before a ball had been kicked questions were posed as to whether he was good enough to play for the Red Devils.

“I learned from failure and disappointment to deal with critics and I think that helped me a lot in this situation,” he said.

De Ligt is a firm fixture in Amorim’s starting XI and has been one of United’s more consistent performers of late, especially in their staunch defensive display which secured victory at Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Nottingham Forest are prepared to make a “club-record offer” for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha – a long-term target for Manchester United and a perfect fit in Ruben Amorim’s system.

The Red Devils were first linked with Cunha in 2022 during Erik ten Hag’s first summer at at Old Trafford as a potential reinforcement to a misfiring forward line.

The Brazilian international was plying his trade for Atletico Madrid and famed for his tenacity and work rate – two prerequisites to play under Los Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone. However, a fee in the region of £45 million deterred United officials and an approach was never formalised.

Six months later, in the January transfer window, Cunha would join Wolves on a six-month loan with a buy clause of £44 million if certain conditions were met – which they were. The forward then officially completed his move from Madrid to Wolverhampton in the summer of 2023.

And while this felt like an exorbitant price for a club like Wolves to be spending, it has proven an astute purchase with the Brazilian’s performances this season continuing to justify every penny.

Cunha has scored 10 goals and provided a further four assists in the Premier League. By comparison, United’s attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirzkee and Rasmus Hojlund have returned nine goals collectively.

Furthermore, Cunha’s all-round play outside the box is even more impressive than his contributions in it.

The 25-year-old is an outstanding ball carrier, combining speed, strength and skill in equal measure to be able to consistently progress into the final third. He ranks in the 95th percentile among forward for progressive carriers and the 97th for successful take-ons.

Cunha is also a tireless presser, ranking in the 98th percentile for interceptions, 95th for tackles and 85th for block among other strikers.

The Wolves star’s positional versatility – capable of playing up front, on the wing or as an attacking midfielder – is further attractive quality for potential suitors; particularly those with a new head coach searching for players to help implement his high-intensity 3-4-3 system, which relies on hard-working forwards.

Amorim has faced a tough start to life at Old Trafford since arriving from Sporting CP in November to replace Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese coach has dogmatically implemented his trademark 3-4-3 formation – as one would expect from a manager hired because of his success with it – despite there being obvious weaknesses in the United squad when lined up like this.

A left wingback is a priority with Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu having emerged as the club’s primary target, but the forward line remains a weakness. Hojlund and Zirkzee continue to struggle in front of goal and Rashford is set for an exit after declaring his intention to leave in a blockbuster interview last month.

Similarly, the two number ten positions in Amorim’s three-man attack have only found one candidate capable of playing the role perfectly – Amad. The other options – Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount and Antony – have not impressed due to poor fits in terms of profile (Fernandes and Garnacho), fitness (Mount) or quality (Antony).

Cunha would be capable of playing either the centre-forward position or the attacking midfield role – an invaluable quality for Amorim given his team’s struggles in front of goal.

However, there is considerable interest elsewhere in the Premier League in the Wolves forward, with rivals Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and even Manchester City reported to have been in the queue, though City’s interest has since cooled.

And now, Sky Sports reveals, another unlikely top-four contender has emerged for Cunha, ready to launch a club-record bid to secure the 25-year-old’s services.

                      — Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) January 22, 2025

Forest are currently 3rd place in the table with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side producing a season for the ages, relative to expectations going into the campaign.

And their owner, Evangelos Marinakis, appears to want to double down on this success, rather than sit back and savour it, by sanctioning a record move for Cunha to further strengthen Nuno’s starting eleven, ahead of England’s biggest clubs.

It remains unlikely that Cunha would consider a move to Forest while there are more traditional Champions League clubs, such as Arsenal, in the hunt for him, but stranger things have happened in football.

The Sky Sports report reveals an offer in the region of £60 million could be enough to convince Wolves to part with their star forward.

United would need to be able to generate serious income this month to meet this demand, though the increasingly likely scenario of a Garnacho sale for a fee in excess of £50 million would provide exactly that.

And while the loss of the 20-year-old Argentine would be a major blow for a fanbase who adore academy players, the prospect of a 25-year-old Brazilian coming in his place, who is perfectly suited to Amorim’s needs, would surely soften the blow.
