“It fired me up”: United star gives surprise reaction to Ruben Amorim’s bold comments

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has backed head coach Ruben Amorim’s controversial remarks about the team, admitting they motivated him.

The comments came after United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, which left the club languishing in an uncharacteristic 13th place in the Premier League.

Amorim’s post-match outburst branded this United squad as “maybe the worst in history,” a statement that reportedly came during a heated critique that saw the manager damage a dressing-room screen.

Despite the abrasiveness of his comments, Fernandes defended his coach, suggesting they came from a place of frustration and passion.

Speaking about the incident, Fernandes said, “I don’t want to see my manager saying certain things about the team because I know he doesn’t feel that. In a moment of rage — and I am Portuguese, so I understand this well — sometimes the blood rises too quickly.”

The Portuguese midfielder likened Amorim’s intense criticism to previous experiences under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who, while known for his calm demeanour, occasionally let his frustration show when the team underperformed.

“When a manager makes himself part of what he’s saying, no one can get angry or disappointed. It shows accountability,” Fernandes added.

Despite Amorim’s hard-hitting remarks, Fernandes revealed they have catalysed improvement.

“It fired me up. Criticism like that makes you want to prove yourself,” he admitted.

Fernandes emphasised the importance of using each game as an opportunity to restore the club to its former glory.

As United prepare for a crucial test against Fulham, Amorim’s fiery style and Fernandes’ rallying cry underline the urgency of turning the tide in a season that has yet to meet the lofty expectations of players and fans alike.

Whether these criticisms will spark a revival remains to be seen, but the captain’s words hint at a team eager to reclaim its identity.

Man Utd boss Amorim gives ‘green light’ to Chelsea ‘swap deal’ with both players ‘open’ to transfer

Man Utd boss Amorim gives ‘green light’ to Chelsea ‘swap deal’ with both players ‘open’ to transfer

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku and Man Utd winger Alejandro Garnacho are both ‘open’ to a January swap deal, according to reports.

The Red Devils are looking to do some business in the January transfer window but the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules are reportedly hindering their pursuit of big targets in the winter.

Lecce star Patrick Dorgu is their main target for Ruben Amorim’s left wing-back position, while they are also hoping to bring in an attacker before the transfer deadline.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed on Friday night that Man Utd are ‘considering a swap’ deal for Chelsea attacker Nkunku with Garnacho potentially going in the other direction.

And now Plettenberg has issued an update on a possible swap deal with both Nkunku and Garnacho ‘open’ to the potential transfer.

Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘As exclusively reported yesterday, there have been initial concrete ideas in recent days among all parties involved about a potential swap between Alejandro #Garnacho and Christopher #Nkunku. Nothing is advanced yet, but the topic has been explored. Both clubs are now in direct contact, and both players are open to a move. #MUFC #CFC Nkunku also has an agreement with Bayern.’

Reports in Spain claim that Man Utd boss Amorim has ‘given the green light’ to the ‘swap deal that turns the Premier League upside down’.

Amorim has ‘approved this operation’  while Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is ‘open to letting Nkunku go if it allows him to bring in a young star like Garnacho’.

The Man Utd head coach ‘appreciates Garnacho’s potential, the Portuguese coach is willing to sacrifice him if it allows him to strengthen the team in key areas’.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson thinks Man Utd should “drop off” Garnacho at Chelsea as the Red Devils would be getting “a signing and a half” in Nkunku.

Merson said on Sky Sports: “If I’m Man United I’m getting that deal done. 100%. If I’m Man United I’m dropping him off! And picking up and Nkunku.

“I am because he’s a good player. I mean he’s just bang unlucky at Chelsea because of [Cole] Palmer. Because Palmer’s done unbelievably well, he just hasn’t got in.

Man Utd transfers: Solskjaer’s Besiktas could sign six Red Devils after Rashford inevitably snubs ‘crazy’ move

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no chance of signing “crazy target” Marcus Rashford, but there are still six Manchester United stars who could join Besiktas…

Amidst the January transfer window hijinks, you may have missed Solskjaer‘s long-awaited return to management with Besiktas after three years out of the game.

Each of Man Utd‘s post-Sir Alex Ferguson managers have taken a downward step after failing at Old Trafford and a move to the Turkish Super Lig – to join Jose Mourinho and more Premier League has-beens – feels befitting of Solskjaer.

51-year-old Solskjaer has enjoyed a dream start at Besiktas (beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the Europa League), though this was also the case at Man Utd and we all know how that spell descended.

The Red Devils legend has only been in the Besiktas job for a week, but with the January window open, it’s no surprise he’s already linked with Man Utd players.

This detail isn’t a shock, but Rashford being the player mentioned is jaw-dropping. This proposed move has been deemed a ‘crazy transfer’ for good reason; because it has no chance of happening.

Rashford to Besiktas is a pipedream (at best) for Solskjaer, but he has a much better chance of signing these six Man Utd stars…

        Altay Bayinder
Ruben Amorim has a f*** tonne of issues as he attempts to steady the rickety Man Utd ship and the goalkeeping department is among them.

Andre Onana – the David De Gea replacement handpicked by Erik ten Hag – overcame early issues to shine for Man Utd in 2023/24, but he’s making mistakes at increased regularity and his position is under scrutiny.

Amorim has also been ‘unimpressed’ with No.2 Bayinder, who has put in back-to-back strong performances against Arsenal and Rangers.

Still, Bayinder is not going to dislodge Onana (or any potential replacement) to become Man Utd’s No.1, so he’ll have to leave if he wants to be another club’s first choice.

The Turkish international made his name at Fenerbahce but would come up against his former club if he replaces 35-year-old Mert Gunok as Besiktas’ go-to between the sticks.

        Victor Lindelof
The injury-prone defender should be long gone from Man Utd, but like several undeserving teammates, he’s still picking up his significant salary from the fallen Premier League great.

United’s chances of selling Lindelof are over, but the Swedish international is out of contract in the summer. It would be a massive shock if he pens an extension, but a brainless decision such as this cannot be ruled out after INEOS have relentlessly insisted on kicking themselves in the foot in their debut year at Old Trafford.

Lindelof is primed for a move to an inferior league and the Turkish Super Lig would welcome him with open arms, provided he decides to continue playing.

Should he stick it out, he’d have no trouble getting starts alongside Emirhan Topcu and/or loanee Felix Uduokhai.

        Tyrell Malacia
It was miss after miss with Man Utd’s recruitment under Ten Hag as the previous regime foolishly gave the Dutchman the freedom to mainly sign players he’d either previously worked with or come up against in the Eredivisie.

Many players have struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League after moving from the Eredivisie as the difference in playing standard is significant. Malacia is one such example, though his main issue at Man Utd has been his severe injury woes.

After missing the entire 2023/24 campaign, the Dutchman returned from hiding last November but only featured for 307 minutes.

Malacia reportedly has an ‘agreement’ to join an unnamed club on loan this month. For the sake of this article, let’s say that it’s Besiktas. Former West Ham full-back Arthur Masuaku would be quaking in his boots in anticipation of this signing.

        Christian Eriksen
His legs may have gone, but at least you cannot fault Eriksen’s attitude as he’s joined Bruno Fernandes in trying to hold Man Utd’s flops to account this season.

Eriksen’s journey from near-death to returning to the football pitch is one of the sport’s greatest stories which warrants a better final chapter than this Man Utd sh*t-show.

Thankfully, 32-year-old Eriksen should have a couple of playing years up his sleeve before he needs to call it a day and ticking off another league with consistent European qualifiers Besiktas wouldn’t be a bad move if he doesn’t fancy the MLS/Saudi Pro League.

READ: Manchester United definitely ask FANS for £300m in latest money-saving Ratcliffe scheme

        Casemiro
Amorim’s indication that Casemiro doesn’t have the right “characteristics” to start for Man Utd was pretty damning and it’s become apparent that the previously world-class defensive midfielder is the head coach’s fifth choice.

The Antony signing may be worse, but buying Casemiro (who was 30) for £60m plus add-ons on a four-year contract was a quite remarkable mis-step.

The Brazil international silenced some of his doubters with a strong debut season, but his haters have justifiably since become more incensed at his dramatic fall from grace in a Man Utd jersey.

United’s attempts to offload Casemiro this month look set to end in frustrating failure, so his exit remains a priority as INEOS cannot afford to carry him (and his massive salary, most importantly) for much longer. If Cristiano Ronaldo does not get his way, Solskjaer could save his former club’s blushes.

        Joshua Zirkzee
As Man Utd will soon discover with Zirkzee, you buy cheap, you buy twice…

Zirkzee’s £34m release clause made him a low-cost forward option and considering Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a sucker for saving money, this made the Netherlands international their preferred target.

But it’s quickly become clear that INEOS’ first signing is out of his depth with the Premier League giants and it’s equally alarming that being a centre-forward is not his best role.

The sluggish attacker is failing to provide adequate competition for Rasmus Hojlund – who is also proving a huge disappointment – and the sooner Man Utd sell, the better.

A return to Serie A remains his most likely next move, but a loan to the Super Lig – a division closer to his level than the Premier League – could be another possibility.

Arsenal: Michael Oliver made a ‘great decision’ to send off Lewis-Skelly over ‘potential leg breaker’

As many Arsenal fans bemoan Michael Oliver’s decision to send off Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolves on Saturday, other fans think it was a ‘great decision’. Plus, Man City vs Chelsea, Garnacho and lots more…

          Send your thoughts to theeditor@football365.com

          Referee standards and decisions
As an Arsenal fan I could rant about Oliver (8 reds in 55 games ) and conspiracy- but it’s a well trodden path and we all have our priors and I doubt I’m changing anyone’s mind.

But I actually think a good deal of an issue that we should all be able to agree on was highlighted in the “who does the PGMOL hate more? “ derby at Molineux.

The MLS red was whatever you think it was. But it was given – and upheld – for violent conduct.  Straight red.  The Gomes red was a second yellow – not deemed dangerous or violent despite more studs showing. So just a foul And a yellow.   VAR also upheld this interpretation.

Both decisions were made in the heat of battle.  At full Speed. Now I happen to think Oliver had a mare. Again.  But – let’s not kid ourselves it’s easy.  He made two poor decisions. But he has to make them on little evidence, with limited view –  and quickly.

VAR exists to balance those inherent weaknesses.  It has lots of views. And anyone who has waited 5 minutes to celebrate a goal will be well aware that VAR is not under time pressure.  It exists for these calls. To say to Oliver “that might only be a yellow. Reconsider.” And “ that’s studs up. On ankle. It’s straight red “

But outiside of offsides and minor hand balls VAR  mostly exists to avoid evidence that refs make mistakes. So it just makes up rationales to agree with the call. If there is definitely a conspiracy then it is surely the one to make sure the cozy status quo is maintained. There is no meritocracy, no culture to improve.

And nobody seems to See that this just delays the inevitable outcome – the total rework of how EPL is reffed and by whom. And will  make the ultimate solution so Much more draconian when it surely arrives.
          Johnno

          Michael Oliver…
I thought I’d seen it all when Oliver sent Martinelli off for two yellow card offences in the same action within FOUR seconds.

Then I thought I’d seen it all when he didn’t send Kovacic off for a foul WORSE than the one he just sent Lewis Skelley off for on Odegaard.  The explanation from PGMOL, he didn’t want to ruin a big game with a red card so Kovacic got leniency.

Fast forward to this season and he sends Trossard off for kicking the ball away a millisecond after he’d blown the whistle for a foul. He had no issues with ruining a big game there.

Now I have seen it all, a straight red card for Lewis Skelley for a tactical foul well inside Wolves own half. Absolutely INSANE. I’ve seen that challenge probably three hundred times, and I’ve never seen it given as a red card.

Upon seeing Oliver referree Arsenal today, I thought s##t, we have to be careful and not give him a single reason to punish us. This is why:

Michael Oliver has sent seven (make that eight now) Gunners players off in 53 (54) matches, equating to an Arsenal red card in roughly 13% of all matches Oliver has officiated. Additionally, stats show an inclination to brandish yellow cards to Arsenal players at a rate above the norm, with the the Gunners averaging 1.77 bookings each game under Oliver’s watch, as opposed to the typical 1.63 for all top-league encounters Oliver has refereed.

In stark contrast, Oliver has never given a Manchester City player a red card, despite refereeing them 47 times overall. Moreover, City players have found themselves cautioned with yellow cards just 1.36 times per match with Oliver at the helm. Now when you consider that City have Rodri, the master of tactical fouls that is pretty unbelievable. I understand they have more of the ball and control, but ZERO red cards?

I don’t think there is a conspiracy against Arsenal with the PGMOL, but I do think Oliver is corrupt.

What’s worse is, we should have been in the lead but Kai missed two massive first half chances. You can’t do that when Oliver is the ref, you never what he’ll conjure up.
          Strevs, AFC, Canada

          Hi,

I’m sure you’ll get a lot of emails about Michael Olivers harsh red on MLS today.

I just want to highlight that this is the same ref, who gave Kovacic just a single yellow card for 2 tackles on Odegaard and  Rice, which were both worse than MLS’s today (both tackles were studs up and above the ankle, and so should be classed as serious foul play based on how PGMOL are defending his decision to send off MLS today) in the Arsenal v Man City home game last season.

I’ve never been one to cry conspiracy with refs, but this Kovacic decision looks more and more suspect when you look at what he’s sent other Arsenal players off for.

He sent off Trossard for kicking the ball away less than a second after the whistle went in the City away game this season, and sent off Martinelli for 2 fouls in the same phase of play after waving play on, against Wolves a few years ago too. People can say by the letter of the law these sending off can be justified ,  but in terms of what’s dangerous and keeping players safe, Kovacic doing 2 potential ankle breaking fouls was much, much worse.

If you look at it logically it just doesn’t make sense.
          Izzy

          Always rated Oliver.
          Stu AFC Illinois

Roll up roll up for the great you’ll never ever see a decision given like that against a team that isn’t Arsenal ever again rollercoaster.
          Simon, London

I think i might have misunderstood why we tune into the Prem these days. There’s one man who is changing more matches than anyone, in new and creative ways, and just doesn’t get the credit for innovation he deserves.

          – Introduces the Martinelli double yellow
          – Outdoes that with the Dalot double protest yellow
          – Crafts a new, never again upheld penalty standard with the Rodri dive against United
          – Applies the ‘for the bantz’ rule by not booking Kovacic in a crucial title tie
          – Decides to get ETH the boot by making up a last minute penalty no one else saw, including the ref
          – watched replays of Doku literally kick a player in the chest and said it was fine
          – And now a brand new Skelly-rule!

What will he do next!? Tune in next week.
Ryan, Bermuda (fun fact, he’s reffed City and Arsenal broadly the same amount, sent a gunner off 8 times. And none for City. Weird)

Looking forward to PGMOL, ex refs, any anti Arsenal pundit and all rival fans twisting themselves in knots to try to justify Michael Oliver’s decision to send off Lewis-Skelly. This is going to be fun!
          Rich,AFC

I read the online fury before I saw the highlights…

I mean, I wouldn’t have disagreed with a yellow, and feel for him because it looked like a mistimed attempt to trip rather than deliberate violent conduct, but the contact was a studs up straight leg right into the man’s ankle, with no attempt to play the ball…. a potential leg breaker.

I don’t really see why the red is so controversial to be honest.
          Andy (MUFC)

          Hi,

What a great decision by the ref yesterday.

The Arsenal lad is a seriously impressive player. But on this occasion he made no attempt to play the ball. He’s not looking at where it is. He’s looking at the defender. He takes the opposite leg to the one carrying the ball. The guy is running at pace. It hasn’t got the drama of one of those shin crunchers but the pace the guy is moving at meant he could have done some serious damage. Definite red.

Keep up the good work ref and up the Spurs which has absolutely no bearing on how I perceive the aforementioned incident.

          Cheers
          Andrew

          No one cares about City
Matt Tee with the most HILARIOUS email I have read in a while. I am still not sure he was sarcastic or the line below was written in earnest:

“Because without their money, power, big names, constantly getting into Europe (which gains money English football), losing City out of the league will kinda bankrupt the Premier League”

          MATE WHAT!!!

          – City brings in NOTHING to the premier league or viewership numbers that any of the other 19 clubs don’t. Whatever money they bring in through their scams, they keep and use. And what power? The power to have a smaller fan base than Newcastle or West Ham in spite of being successful beyond imagination? Or the power to commit fraud? What powers exactly have City used to help the Premier League ???!

          – Big names? Like who? If City dissolves today, all the players and Pep would nicely fit in at any club in the premier league or around the world. None of the names other than Pep & Haaland are even close to marketable. And they would be more marketable at any other club in the world.

          – Constantly getting into Europe. You do understand that their spot will go to whoever finishes top 4/5 right? UEFA ain’t going to retire the spot just cause they love City so much. What is the logic here?

          – City were a relegation team pre 2010 or whatever. The EPL was thriving and doing better than ever. Tomorrow if the club were to disappear, it wouldn’t make 1% difference in revenue, finances, stadium attendances, league viewership or broadcast rights.

Let me make this simple for you, if any of United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, Villa, Newcastle or even fuckin West Ham cease to exist, it will make a 10 times more difference to the Premier League Product than City would.

Again, I am really hoping the mail was written in sarcasm buddy.

          Regards,
          Aman

Apparently Matt thinks city can’t be punished because it would bankrupt the league city are the glue which holds it all together.

Back in the 80s Liverpool were the city of the day. Dominated everything all the best players were there etc

Then all English teams got banned from Europe and….the league didn’t go bankrupt despite EVERY team not bringing in euro money. So the idea that a team who didn’t really exist 14 years ago being so important to British football that the whole league goes bankrupt if they aren’t in it is so ludicrously silly that I can only assume it’s a troll.

City are so important to everyone in the UK that their stadium is half empty most of the time and their own fans don’t think they’re important enough to watch.

If city are relegated (which I don’t think is likely, fine and transfer ban is most likely if you ask me) then the only affect on everyone else will be to follow the rules because if the richest and most successful team of the last few years can be punished despite them drowning the FA in legal fees with their wealth – then anyone and everyone can be punished.

Aside from that most people will go right back to forgetting city even exist, like most of their own fans.
          Lee

Most Arsenal fans aren’t conspiracy theorists. But, you fat, smug northerners love to pile on. Oh, I’m sorry. Did you not like that general assumption? Go f*ck yourself. Just because an idiot doesn’t complain about an injustice they experienced doesn’t suddenly make them tough. And, just because a person complains about repeated offences doesn’t mean they’re “moaning and whinging” without merit. It’s entirely possible that Michael Oliver coincidentally gives Arsenal players dubious red cards against Wolves (it almost certainly is). Even if he has a subconscious bias against Arsenal that’s bad enough. Oh, and all refs are human, so we already know they have their opinions. And we know they have a choice. And “by the letter of the law” is the refuge of simple-minded men. So, can Oliver explain why Gomes got a second yellow for his stamp but MLS got a straight red? Above or below the ankle shouldn’t make a difference. And, I’ll say again that rival fans who love to pile on should be getting angry at the refs, too. But, you won’t. You’ll just scoff in northern.
          Simon, Norf London Gooner

I’m not an Arsenal fan by any stretch and I usually find their travails slightly amusing. But it is getting a bit silly now, the number of absolute nonsense decisions that are going against them.

Only Michael Oliver could think that warranted a red card. And ONLY Darren “I can’t do anything. I can’t do anything. F*ck” England could fail to overturn it.

Yes, both of them have been paid to referee in the UAE. This is purely coincidental, though Arsenal fans (and probably Liverpool and United fans) will probably put 2+2 together to make 5. They’re not actively choosing to screw those teams over and give favourable decisions to City. Are they?

No. They’re just bloody incompetent. PGMOL remains unfit for purpose and the media are baffling (wilfully?) blind to the need to get rid.

VAR isn’t ruing the game – it’s the humans.

City fan here.  Time was, any City defeat would leave me gutted for most of the week,  unable to shake the gloom and re-running the game over and over in my head.  Bearing in mind I watched my first game at Maine Road in 1972, then that’s a fair amount of negative energy being produced by me over the past fifty years or so.

But then, as everything else in life, context is everything.  These days, I don’t get quite as excised when my team loses.  Do I love my club any less?  I don’t think so.  Am I still gutted when we lose?  You betcha.  But as most reading this will know, life has a way of slapping you, and very hard, around the back of the head when you least expect it and, whether you want to or not, makes you re-focus on priorities that don’t include blokes kicking a football around for 90+ minutes.

I haven’t written in about City’s down form recently (Though I read the mailbox pretty much every day. Lovely distraction) as I’ve had other things to concentrate on*.  But I read a lot of mails last week with a wry smile.  Some of the usual suspects (looking at you Minty) and some new ones, who just couldn’t resist the ‘Pep’s only a chequebook manager’ narrative.  But of course he is.  Because if just throwing squillions at the best players in the world and hoping that that, in itself, would make those players the best TEAM on the planet and guarantee success on the pitch, would surely have seen either United or Chelsea winning a treble in the last ten years wouldn’t it?  Or winning four leagues in a row?  Or becoming Centurions?

No?  What’s that?  There must be another factor that that makes these individuals play as a cohesive unit, with purpose and a collective plan?  Hmmm.  What on earth could that factor be?

On to Saturday.  In my opinion, and having just beaten Chelsea 3-1, City are not ‘back’.  It’s my view, and mine alone, that both the PL and CL titles are beyond us this year.  FA cup?  Maybe, but not holding my breath.  Top four?  I think so but I say that with both sets of fingers very much firmly crossed.  The club screwed up not refreshing the squad in the summer.  I’m not sure there can be any argument about that now, and here we are with three new signings in the January window.  Only time will tell if that is desperation or genius.  Hey Ho.

Very much hope I’m wrong of course, and here’s hoping both Liverpool and Arsenal have a complete meltdown.  Just can’t see it myself.

**The ‘priority,’ at all costs, was the acquisition of an ‘Ultimate Fart Blaster Gun’ (I’m not kidding!) something I had signally failed to do for Christmas.

          Kids.  Pfft!  Honestly.

Man City vs Chelsea uncomfortable observations
          Swearing to never watch Man C games as they always win when I watch them;Having said that, some uncomfortable observations from a POV who doesn’t care about either sides;

          1. Khusanov (their RB) visibly had one of the worst debuts for any professional;
          Watching from India, where the commentators (I think Jim Beglin and co.) were far too often referring to the player as the ‘Uzbekistan’ player/defender;
To a point where I had to write this mail; just weird from a commentator POV, especially in the current era.
          It’s even weirder that Marmoush was just referred by his name;
So hopefully no regional favourtism there…

          2. Coming to regional favouritism; Palmer was sh*t for a player who’s supposed to be his side’s talisman; and yet nobody (hi commentators) even mentioned it;
Again, hopefully no regional favouritism there.

          3. Even after a sh*te season, City are fourth.

          4. Thankfully both title contenders won on the weekend; so the mailbox would be a fresh one (hopefully)

          Alejandro Garnacho can’t pass…
Dave, yes, Garnacho takes a lot of shots. Unfortunately, he can’t actually get many of them on target and certainly not into the goal. 3 prem league goals btw, from those 4 shots per 90. His shooting is worse than that of Nunez, and massively lower than Højlund (who has one of the best goals to chances ratio). Imagine if he passed in those positions instead. But…

…as you say, he can’t pass. Which is a kind of critical part of the role.

You would choose to keep that stellar provider of useless stats and little end product over players who can actually deliver what the team needs?

People say mine are hot takes but that one is direct from the sun.

3-4-3: Onana dropped again, Garnacho, Collyer and Zirkzee also benched vs Fulham – prediction

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s defensive injury concerns seem to have cleared in time for today’s Premier League clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui were all doubts due to carrying knocks, but have all travelled to London for the game.

Yoro may not make the first XI though, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez more likely to join De Ligt in the back three.

Victor Lindelof is another option, having returned to full training, but Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans are still out.

Mazraoui will probably come back in at right wing back, with Diogo Dalot continuing at left wing back.

Andre Onana should return in goal after being rested against Rangers in the week, but we have taken a punt that Amorim will stick with Altay Bayindir, who has looked the less error-prone of the pair in recent games.

Manu Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo are likely to return in midfield having been rested against the ‘Gers.

Toby Collyer and Christian Eriksen, who both started on Thursday, are other options.

Casemiro is not seeing much action at the moment but in theory could be in the side.

Amad played wing back last time out but should move back into the right inside forward role, with Bruno Fernandes on the left and Alejandro Garnacho returning to the bench.

Antony has gone on loan to Real Betis, Marcus Rashford is persona non grata and does not appear to have travelled and Mason Mount is still injured.

As for the striker, Josh Zirkzee has started the last two games and was starting to look tired against the Scottish side. It may be that Rasmus Hojlund is given another chance to find some form against the Cottagers.

Here, then, is our predicted XI for this evening’s 7pm kick-off:

“Only way for the transfer”: United wonderkid ready to “put pressure” on INEOS to force through a move this month – report

Alejandro Garnacho’s future continues to dominate headlines with Manchester United open to moving on the academy graduate as INEOS seek pure profit to balance the books and steer clear of breaching any Profit and Sustainability rules.

The Argentine had no intention of jumping ship midway into the season but he feels he does not have a place in Ruben Amorim’s plans and has now warmed up to the idea of a departure in January.

Almost all the recent reports seemed to suggest that the 20-year-old is likely to stay in the Premier League with Chelsea frontrunners for his signature with Napoli having moved on to Karim Adeyemi of Borussia Dortmund.

Initially, it was the Naples outfit who were leading the race with plenty of Italian outlets even going as far as to claim that a deal had been agreed.

Napoli remain in the race for Garnacho

So far, the Serie A giants have seen their bid of €50 million knocked back with the Red Devils valuing their wonderkid at €80 million. They are open to going up to €55 million but not more, which means a huge valuation gap still remains.

Napoli had even proposed the inclusion of a hefty sell-on clause to sweeten the deal for United but so far, no agreement has been reached.

Despite what the Napoli president has to say, Sky Italia (via Area Napoli) have claimed that Garnacho remains interested in a move to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

So much so that he is willing to put pressure on INEOS to lower their demands so that he can reunite with Scott McTominay, who has tried to sell Antonio Conte’s project to his former teammate.

“For Garnacho, Napoli would offer a maximum of 50 million, but the player wants to put pressure on Manchester United to reduce the demands for the player’s registration, so as to go down compared to the 70 million that the Red Devils would like to collect: he knows that this is the only way for the transfer to materialize.”

Garnacho ready to put pressure on United

Napoli have already reportedly agreed personal terms with the Argentina international who will see his wages doubled should he move to Italy.

The report also added that Napoli are also negotiating with Dortmund for Adeyemi and are keen to ensure at least one of the two come in as replacement for Kvicha Kvaratshkhelia, who has left to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Interestingly, the Stamford Bridge side are ready to pay United’s asking price but as with Marcus Rashford, INEOS would prefer not to strengthen a direct domestic rival.

Both teams are looking to take advantage of United’s PSR woes, with fans far from pleased with the idea of losing such a highly-rated academy youngster as it goes against the club’s ethos.

Amorim “demands” three blockbuster signings from INEOS as he seeks to take United back to the top – report

Manchester United are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and with only eight days left in the January transfer window, INEOS are yet to bring in any reinforcements for Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese head coach is reportedly unhappy with the lack of transfer activity as he needs all the help he can get to salvage what is left of the season.

Due to PSR concerns, not many incomings are expected, something the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss is realising slowly which is why he has demanded that the new co-owners back him heavily once summer comes around.

As revealed by Fichajes, the 39-year-old has asked for three blockbuster signings which include a striker, an attacking midfielder and a wingback, with all of these positions in need of major upgrades.

                Amorim’s triple demands

“Manchester United are preparing for a summer transfer market that could mark a turning point in their recent history. The idea is clear: build a competitive team that can regain prominence both in England and in Europe.

“After several years away from the Premier League fight, the Red Devils are looking to meet the demands of their coach, Rubén Amorim, with three top-level signings: Viktor Gyokeres, Florian Wirtz and Achraf Hakimi.”

Amorim wants the club to sign his Sporting protege Gyokeres to add goals to the team and it seems like a no-brainer at this point.

He has a release clause worth €100 million and United will hope to get him for less given his past relation with the coach but there are multiple suitors in the race already.

The other two names are quite surprising mainly as these names have not been mentioned recently. As an attacking midfielder, he has requested Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen.

New names linked with a move

The German has 14 goals and 10 assists already this season and is expected to cost €100 million as well give his superlative form for the Bundesliga giants.

And for the wingback position, Achraf Hakimi could be a great option to have and the Moroccan’s contract gets over in 2026, which means next summer could be Paris Saint-Germain’s last chance at selling him for a decent fee or they risk losing him on a free.

Hakimi has three goals and seven assists already this term and his attacking output makes him a great option down the right flank. Both the PSG star and Leverkusen playmaker are Real Madrid targets, which means United will not have it easy to land the duo.

All three combined are expected to cost close to €250 million, and it remains doubtful whether INEOS can afford all of them given the Red Devils also need a defensive midfielder and possibly a few backups in other positions. So for now, take this report with a hefty pinch of salt.

“Negotiations underway”: United and CL giants locked in talks as winger’s January exit draws closer – report

Manchester United are grappling with PSR concerns which is why club are looking at moving on an academy graduate this January as their sale would constitute pure profit.

And Marcus Rashford seemed the obvious choice since he has already gone public about his desire to try a new adventure. Since that infamous interview dropped, Ruben Amorim has not afforded him a single minute of game-time.

The Mancunian has already seen a move to AC Milan slip away while Borussia Dortmund have also been priced out of a move. Juventus remain a potential option but the Englishman’s heart remains set on a move to Barcelona.

However, the Catalan giants are facing their own financial problems and so far, have not managed to make space for the England international’s arrival with both Eric Garcia and Ansu Fati looking unlikely to depart Camp Nou this month.

Barca have been unable to make space for Rashford

Interestingly, SPORT have claimed that even if either were to leave, the United No 10’s wage demands would have made it nearly impossible for a deal to materialise.

The 27-year-old currently earns a mammoth £15,600,000 gross per year (via capology), which means he’s owed £7,800,000 for the remaining six months.

However, since it is Rashford who is agitating for a move away, United have made it clear to his camp that they will not pay a single dime and the La Liga side will have to assume his full wages.

In order to complete his dream switch, the England international is reportedly open to lowering his wage demands but Barca can only afford to pay £2,500,000, which means there remains a huge gap.

“Manchester United are reportedly giving the green light to Marcus Rashford leaving on loan, but have warned the player’s entourage that they want to save his entire salary between now and the end of the season.

                    Wage disparity

“Either Barça or the club that wants him will pay the full fee or the player will have to lower his salary significantly for the operation to go through. Negotiations are underway, but Barça must reach a salary limit with some exit if they finally want to sign the attacker.”

Besiktas, currently coached by ex-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, were open to a deal as well but it looks like this saga will stretch till deadline day, which might leave Rashford with no other alternative choice.

His camp has already denied reports of a falling-out between the player and Amorim but the head coach is unlikely to play him much should he end up remaining at Old Trafford.

Not the best look for INEOS, who want him to regain form so that they can maximise his market value and sell him for a higher fee in the summer.

“I feel sharp and I feel ready”: United star sends transfer message to his suitors ahead of deadline day

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has insisted he feels ready to regularly contribute and play games, even as the club contemplates offloading him this month.

Malacia has been limited to just six first-team appearances this season following a serious knee injury that kept him sidelined for more than a year.

The injury required at least two surgeries, which delayed his return to action. It’s believed that United are keen on sanctioning a loan exit for Malacia before transfer deadline day on February 3.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United told him to look for a new team. It was stated that a move is only a matter of time.

It’s understood that there are a number of clubs both in the Premier League and abroad that are interested in taking Malacia for the remainder of the campaign.

A subsequent report claimed that United are willing to include either Malacia or Luke Shaw in a bid to secure the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers player Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Speaking to United’s in-house media, Malacia said, “You always want to play against the best. So that’s why I’m at Manchester United. That’s why you want to play in the Premier League. I’m always prepared. I always want to play good games, so it doesn’t matter against who.”

“I feel sharp and I feel ready. All I want to do is to play football. It’s been a long time so I’m happy to be back.”

Malacia played the entire extra time of United’s recent triumph over Arsenal in the FA Cup. He said about the victory, “It’s always nice. We got the win and playing with 10 men.”

“It was difficult for everyone but I think you could see, in the game, that we played as a team. Everybody was fighting to win and we got the reward in the end.”

“I enjoyed it because the fans give you always like an extra boost because, of course, you could see everybody was tired but, because our fans were there for us, it gives you an extra boost go to again.”

The Netherlands international also came on as a substitute in Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers. He lauded the fans for sticking by the team during a difficult season.

“It’s the hard work. It’s being together as a team and to show it on the pitch, as well, in the games.”

“Of course, it’s all of us. I think it’s the players on the pitch, the staff, the coach, the supporters. It’s like you need to be working like one unit. Sometimes, it’s difficult when you lose or we don’t play well but, at the end of the day, we need to stick together.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they face Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage.
