Man Utd: Ratcliffe ‘receives green light’ for ‘transformational’ stadium plan after Neville ‘recommendation’

According to reports, Manchester United chiefs have ‘received the green light’ to push ahead with ‘their plans for a new Old Trafford’.

At the start of 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe took control of footballing matters at Man Utd after he purchased a minority stake in the Premier League giants.

This takeover was welcomed by all quarters at Old Trafford as it nudged the Glazer family closer to the exit door, but Ratcliffe has quickly become a hated figure at Man Utd.

The INEOS chief has sanctioned a massive cost-cutting programme and made numerous unpopular decisions, such as hiking ticket prices and mass redundancies.

Ratcliffe has also overhauled Man Utd’s recruitment team and they are under scrutiny as they have been pretty inactive this month.

The United supremo has also hatched a plan to move away from Old Trafford. He hopes the so-called ‘Wembley of the North’ will be a 100,000-capacity stadium.

A new report from The Daily Mail claims Man Utd’s ‘Wembley of the North plans have received the green light from the local authority as they have unanimously backed this project’.

It is noted that the Trafford council reckon this move could be ‘transformational’ amid a ‘recommendation from a task force which includes Gary Neville, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and London 2012 supremo Lord Coe’.

Regarding what’s next, the detailed report explains.

‘Officials at Trafford council unequivocally backed the plans, which could see a new 100,000-capacity stadium at the heart of a vast regeneration programme.

‘They will now seek a ‘top class consultant team’ that will be charged with ‘helping to shape a high-profile strategic masterplan for the regeneration of the area’.

‘At a town hall meeting in the shadows of Old Trafford a short debate on the plans – which officials believe will add £7.3bn to the economy and provide more than 90,000 jobs and 15,000 homes – was held before the green light was given in the shape of a verbal vote.’

‘United will fund any stadium development. However, support from public bodies is needed for infrastructure around the wider regeneration and would include transport and housing.

‘A decision on whether to build a new, 100,000-capacity home or refurbish the existing stadium and add around 14,000 seats to take it to 87,000 is expected at the end of the season.

‘Currently, those involved are working towards a new stadium following a recommendation from a task force which includes Gary Neville, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and London 2012 supremo Lord Coe.

‘The meeting heard the plans would be ‘huge for the area’, with one councillor describing the plans as ‘one of the biggest endeavours Trafford council has ever embarked upon’. The prospect of a new stadium, dubbed the ‘Wembley of the North’, hosting international football was also aired.’

“He said no”: PL rivals failed with last-ditch attempt to secure “elegant” defender who is now United bound – report

Manchester United’s academy recruitment has gathered pace since INEOS stepped in as seen from the deals for Malian youngster Sekou Kone and Chido Obi, from Arsenal.

And as recently relayed by The Peoples Person, the Red Devils have brought on board another highly-rated Arsenal academy starlet in the form of Ayden Heaven.

The 18-year-old was already handed a first-team debut by Mikel Arteta and was even offered a new deal to stay at The Emirates but he chose to walk away and join the 20-time English league champions, much like his former teammate Chido Obi.

There was plenty of interest in the centre-back from Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund as well as English sides like Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Arsenal failed with last contract offer

Interestingly, as revealed by TBR Football, Arteta was desperate not to lose the England U19 international which is why Arsenal offered an improved deal to Heaven two weeks ago in a last-ditch attempt to hold on their wonderkid.

However, the “dominant and elegant” defender rejected their fresh attempt and decided to link up with the Danish striker at Old Trafford.

“Eintracht Frankfurt wanted Heaven, as did RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund. Heaven spoke to Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United in the last six weeks, but he opted for Man United.

“Frankfurt, Leipzig and Dortmund pushed hard for Heaven, while Arsenal made a final offer to him two weeks ago, but again he said no.”

      Heaven is United bound

Heaven is already seen as having first-team potential which shows the signing is not only for the future but also the present.

He is left-footed and the Red Devils have a dearth of left-footed centre-backs with only Lisandro Martinez capable of playing as the left centre-back.

Luke Shaw can also play there but given his poor injury record, United did the right thing by jumping for the Arsenal starlet.

While Fabrizio Romano has already announced his capture, no official confirmation from either club has arrived.

It remains to be seen when Heaven arrives and whether Ruben Amorim opts to hand him his first-team debut this season.

Amorim fires transfer warning ahead of deadline day, fans will not like it

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has warned about the difficulty of doing deals during the January transfer window, insisting that the club must be wary of repeating the mistakes of previous years.

United have had a quiet month, both in terms of outgoings and arrivals. Apart from a few academy stars who have been gone out in search of first-team minutes, Antony is the only other high-profile player who has departed, following his loan move to Real Betis.

The Red Devils are yet to make a signing but that could change soon, with Patrick Dorgu expected to be officially added to the ranks imminently.

Ahead of United’s Europa League clash with FCSB on Thursday evening, Amorim spoke to reporters and pointed out the challenges that usually come about when trying to complete transactions in the midst of a season.

He said [via the club website], “This window is always really, really difficult and we don’t want to make the mistakes of the past.”

“We have to also understand the situation of the club. A lot of things are changing so we have to be careful in this type of window.”

“You guys know the situation of the club at the moment, so it’s nothing new.”

The 40-year-old emphasised that he is keen on working with the current crop of players available to him as United aim to finish the campaign strongly.

“Our focus is to work with the players that we have. I think it is clear we can improve as a team, all of us, if we have time to train and if we put some wins together. So, it will be so much easier.”

Amorim added, “We had so many games compared to training, that is how, for me, it is the biggest problem to start [my job] in the middle of a season, especially, in that moment, with a lot of games.”

FCSB vs. United kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

Victory for the 20-time English champions would secure them automatic progression to the Europa League’s last-16 stage, avoiding February’s two-legged knockout play-offs.

Video: United players celebrate Amorim’s birthday in unique fashion with Marcus Rashford also joining in the celebrations

Manchester United players took part in their final training session on home soil this morning before travelling to Romania to face FCSB in Matchday 8 of the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim’s side need just a point to guarantee a place in the round of 16 stage of the competition and the squad seem in good spirits before the trip.

The good mood was reflected in training when Ruben Amorim and Darren Fletcher took part in a new training tradition, introduced since the arrival of the Portuguese coach.

The Athletic reporter Laurie Whitwell shared a video on X of Amorim and Fletcher running through a gauntlet made by the players to celebrate their respective birthdays.

Captain Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho stood at the start of the tunnel which was then made up of other first-team stars who slapped the pair on the head and back as they ran through.

Fletcher burst out of the other side before his boss who was seen jokingly clutching his back after taking the playful hits from his players.

The tradition has previously been used to welcome injured players back into the fold, including Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw in recent times.

Incidentally, long term absentee Shaw was part of today’s session and could be in line for a return to first team action in the upcoming fixtures.

Marcus Rashford was also present and joined in the fun, looking in a jovial mood despite his continued omission from Amorim’s matchday squads, a trend that will continue in Bucharest.

Amorim officially celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday with Fletcher turning 41 this coming Saturday.

The United head coach has already shared a joke on the matter, in one of his post match interviews after the recent victory against Fulham.

“It’s not 40…I’m 50! After two months at Manchester United, it’s 50. It’s a privilege to spend my 40th birthday here,” he said.

The pair will be desperate to mark their special day with a victory in Europe that will not only see them safely through to the knockout phase of the Europa League but continue the decent run of results United have enjoyed since the turn of the year.

The 3-1 reverse at the hands of Brighton at Old Trafford is the only loss the team have suffered in 2025 and another success in Bucharest will make it five wins from six this calendar year.

“But more attacking…”: Lecce star compares “incredible” Dorgu to elite 27yo fullback, United fans will overjoyed

Patrick Dorgu has been described as an “incredible player” by his Lecce teammate who draws a comparison between the 20-year-old wing-back and world-class AC Milan fullback Theo Hernandez.

Manchester United have reached a “broad agreement” with Lecce to sign the Danish international for a deal worth an initial £25 million with a further £5 million in potential add-ons.

Old Trafford officials identified Dorgu as a key target in the winter window to fill the vacant left wing-back position in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

United saw two bids rejected by Lecce with the Serie A side reported to be holding out for a total package worth €40 million (£33.5 million). However, there was optimism at Old Trafford that a compromise could be struck with the club’s delicate financial situation meaning every penny counts this year.

Amorim is believed to have personally approved Dorgu as a target with the Dane possessing a potent pairing of pace and physicality. He stands 6’2 and has excellent stamina while providing a constant threat in the opposition half.

Dorgu is positionally versatile, having played at left wing-back, left-back, right-back, right wing-back and, most often, right-wing for Lecce this season.

The Serie A side, stationed 18th in the league table, use the 20-year-old as something of a Swiss army knife, deploying Dorgu in different positions as the level of opposition dictates.

This comfortability on either flank will have been key to Amorim’s approval with the United squad struggling to provide answers at left wing-back or right wing-back, outside of the brilliant Amad who is best deployed further forward.

And it’s this versatility which leads Lecce striker Nikola Krstovic to remark, “[Dorgu] knows how to play in multiple positions: up front, at the back, on the right. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play in goal.”

Dorgu’s teammate is effusive in his praise of the young defender’s progress as “he gets better with each day”.” He is “an incredible player when you think he’s only 20,” Krstovic concludes.

And the Lecce marksman, who has himself declared an interest in playing for the Red Devils, offers a tantalising comparison to excite United fans. Krstovic believes the Danish international is “a bit like Theo [Hernandez], although Dorgu is more attacking.”

Hernandez, 27, is one of the premier left-backs in Europe with the AC Milan defender among the gold standard for attacking fullbacks. The French international was even believed to be a target at Old Trafford, though the club’s finances would have prevented a move such is the price the Rossoneri would have demanded for their star defender.

To be compared to Hernandez by a player within Serie A is a striking compliment for Dorgu; and the fact Krstovic describes the Dane as even “more attacking” than the Frenchman offers a tantalising prospect for United fans once Dorgu arrives in Manchester.

Amorim suggests £70m Man Utd star will leave in January as Red Devils ‘bring in athletics guru’

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has hinted that Casemiro could leave in the January transfer window as he needs more players “with high intensity”.

The Brazil international arrived at Old Trafford as one of Erik ten Hag’s first signings in a huge £70m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

However, it has not gone to plan for Casemiro at Man Utd with the midfielder struggling to get to grips with Premier League football and has been used sparingly this season.

The Man Utd has made just ten Premier League starts this term with new head coach Amorim using him in the starting XI on just four occasions in all competitions since his arrival.

And there have been rumours that he could leave Old Trafford this month with Italian top-flight side Roma reportedly interested in taking the Brazil international on loan.

However, a report from Italian publication Leggo has insisted that, because of his huge wages, a deal to the Serie A giants is unlikely.

But, in an interview with TNT Sports Mexico, Amorim has hinted that Casemiro could be on the move this month as Man Utd eye more “players with high instensity.

When asked why Casemiro has not been selected for a while, Amorim said: “Sometimes it’s a system fit – sometimes it’s the player’s [form].

“We know that Casemiro nowadays has other qualities. He’s intelligent, understands the game and knows where the ball is going to be.

“But, we are in a league where there is a big intensity difference. Therefore I feel our team needs players with high intensity and sometimes we don’t have them.

“We all know Casemiro’s qualities and everything he has won, so I have nothing to add to that. It’s just a selection choice.”

The Times now claim that Man Utd are ‘tapping into the expertise of one of the world’s leading athletics coaches, who is working with Old Trafford staff as a consultant’.

‘Harry Marra is best known for guiding his fellow American, Ashton Eaton, to two Olympic decathlon titles in 2012 and 2016, as well as a number of other elite multi-event specialists.

‘The 78-year-old was named World Athletics coach of the year after the Rio Games and has also served as the speed and fitness consultant for the Major League Baseball team San Francisco Giants.

‘Now Marra is sharing his vast knowledge and experience with the fitness and sports science staff at United, during a time when Rúben Amorim has expressed concern about the general condition of the players he took charge of in November.

Transfer bombshell: Shock CL club “close to reaching an agreement” for Marcus Rashford, ready to pay his full wages – report

Manchester United have been trying to offload Marcus Rashford ever since he publicly revealed his desire to try a new adventure away from Old Trafford.

Since that fateful interview dropped, Ruben Amorim has not afforded him a minute of action with the pair’s relationship reportedly beyond repair after the head coach’s latest brutal comments.

AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund had tried their luck but moved on to other targets after the Mancunian’s stance of favouring a move to Barcelona came to light.

However, despite Barca boss Hansi Flick’s admiration for the United No 10, the Catalan giants have failed to make space for the Carrington graduate in their squad and with less than a week to go in the January window, time is running out for Rashford.

                Gala enter Rashford race

Which is why he is reportedly open to alternate options with The Peoples Person recently relaying that Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were interested in his services.

While the Fener vice-president refuted such claims, Turkish outlet Fotomac have claimed Gala want to drop a transfer “bombshell” by agreeing a six-month loan for the Englishman.

In a separate social media post, the outlet claimed, “Galatasaray is close to reaching an agreement to loan Manchester United’s left winger Marcus Rashford.”

                — Fotomaç (@fotomac) January 29, 2025

Manager Okan Buruk has already given his green light for the deal as he feels the 27-year-old can double up as a striker as well as a winger which would be hugely beneficial for the Turkish giants given Mauro Icardi’s absence.

“Okan Buruk is expected to use Marcus Rashford in important roles in both the 3-man system and the 4-man system. It is reported that the experienced footballer can play as a double forward with Victor Osimhen and can sometimes be on the wings.”

Interestingly, the report also revealed that Galatasaray were open to paying Rashford’s wages for the second half of the season, something INEOS want as they do not want to pay a dime since the player had initiated exit talks.

Ready to pay his full wages

“Galatasaray aims to loan Rashford until the end of the season. Just like Victor Osimhen, who was loaned at the beginning of the season, Cimbom, who aim to complete this transfer in a similar manner, agrees to pay Rashford’s remaining salary.”

The England international earns £15,600,000 gross per year, which amounts to and £7,800,000 for the remaining season. His weekly wages stand at £300,000 gross per week (via capology).

A cursory glance at Gala’s wage bill shows Osimhen and Icardi are their highest earners, earning £161,561 per week, which is significantly less than that of the Carrington graduate.

How they will make up this shortfall remains to be seen. It will also be interesting to see whether Rashford agrees to the move given his heart is set on a move to the Camp Nou.

Alternate options include Besiktas and even Premier League sides like Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United even though INEOS are unlikely to entertain the idea of strengthening a direct domestic rival.

Amorim says “we are a better team” when this United star is in the starting line-up

Ruben Amorim says he will choose his moment to reinstate Marcus Rashford ahead of tomorrow evening’s final Europa League group stage game against Romanian side FCSB.

Leny Yoro joined the head coach for the pre-match press conference, with Yoro’s remarks being covered in a separate article by The Peoples Person.

Amorim was asked again about Marcus Rashford’s exclusion from the squad once more for tomorrow’s match and his comments in a previous presser that he would play his 43-year-old goalkeeping coach before Rashford.

“The situation is the same for every player,” he said.

“My sentence was that I wouldn’t put any player that doesn’t give the maximum. I didn’t say only Marcus Rashford. We are a better team with him, that’s clear, but until the right moment I won’t change my mind.

“If Rashford will change we are more than happy to have Rashford. But we have to set standards. It’s not personal,” he added.

“Our team, you can look at our team and imagine the profile of the players.

“Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better, but he has to change. If he changes, we are more than welcome to use a talent like Rashford, and we need it. But in this moment I think it’s really clear that we have to set some standards.

“So we are waiting for Marcus, if he wants it really, really bad. So that’s the only thing.

“You try to make it something personal. It’s not personal. I have nothing against Marcus. I just have to make the same rules for everybody.

Asked if it was disappointing for him that he couldn’t count on Rashford currently, Amorim replied:

“We need goals. We need one against one. We need threat in the final third. What more do you need?”

Rashford was filmed training with the first team squad this week but was not selected to travel to Bucharest.

There have been reports that the pair are not on speaking terms after Rashford telling a journalist he wanted a new challenge elsewhere.

However, with the winter transfer window closing in four days’ time and no solid offers for the England man on the table, they might be forced to sort out their differences if the player is to see any more action this season.

The Englishman must have thought finding a new club would be easy but it has not proven to be the case. AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have already left the chase amid Rashford’s adamant stance that he will only move to Barcelona.

However, the Catalan giants have failed to make space for him in the squad with Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia yet to depart the Camp Nou.

Rashford’s future still up in the air

Barca might also struggle to accommodate United’s demands of paying the United No 10’s wages in full even if he agrees to take a pay-cut.

With time running out, the England international could be forced to take alternate options with The Peoples Person recently relaying that Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have also entered the race.

But there are more options for the 27-year-old within the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United both eyeing the Carrington graduate.

While INEOS had made it clear that they would not strengthen a direct domestic rival, keeping Rashford at the club amid the rising tensions with Amorim might not be the best route to take.

Ultimately, the new co-owners would want to sell Rashford to the highest bidder in the summer and the best way to maximise his transfer value would be to send him out on loan so that he can regain his form.

As per journalist Alex Crook, speaking on the TalkSPORT Transfer Notebook Podcast, Spurs could look to take advantage of United’s conundrum closer to deadline day.

In fact, the agency that Rashford has reportedly touched base with in order to find an exit route out of Old Trafford have a great relationship with the North London club so a move cannot be ruled out at this stage.

                    Spurs could take advantage

“But do we get to deadline day when the European avenues have been closed? I think Barcelona are going to need to get players out in order to facilitate any kind of move,” Crook said.

“One of those Premier League clubs, or West Ham or maybe even Tottenham, who have a good relationship with one of the agencies that I understand, Marcus Rashford, has enlisted the help of to get him a move.

“Do they go to Manchester United and say, look, if you can swallow up a bigger percentage of his wages, we’ll take him? Could that well happen on deadline day?”

Whether INEOS agree to said demands remains to be seen. The saga is expected to run until Deadline day with United lining up Mathys Tel as an alternative should the 27-year-old depart.

“It compromises the rest”: Amorim pinpoints “very noticeable” reason behind his players’ struggles

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has insisted that his players are struggling to fully get acclimated to the demands of his system because of a lack of enough time to “train the routines.”

Amorim has endured a mixed start to life at United, winning just eight of the 17 games he has taken charge of since replacing Erik ten Hag late last year.

His preferred 3-4-3 formation has been the subject of intense debate since his arrival, with some critics suggesting that he should ditch it to accommodate the players currently at his disposal.

However, the Portuguese coach has defiantly emphasised on several occasions that he will not change his beliefs and will press on to the bitter end if it comes to that.

Speaking to TNT Sports Mexico, Amorim was asked about United’s struggles on the pitch. He responded, “Because it’s the start of work and the details may be more important. No, it’s not completely worth looking at the table.”

“We already know that everything that doesn’t end up in the first place doesn’t mean anything to a club like Manchester United. But at this point, we also have to have a sense of the context. So, I don’t look at the table.”

“I look at what the team is doing, the things we have to improve. And if we look at the table and try to win two games at a time, to go up the table a lot, I don’t think it’s going to work. So, at this point, it’s just thinking about the next game.”

Amorim added, “I think that we… I was watching Fulham’s game for the second time. The positions are there, but there are a lot of routines missing. There’s no time to train the routines. They’re trying to do it, but without the routines, there’s no aggressiveness in the moves. With the ball, especially with the ball. Without the ball it’s easier. There are a lot of rules without the ball. It’s easier to explain.”

“With the ball, it has a lot to do with understanding the space, what the opponent is doing. We want to do something, but then the opponent covers certain spaces and we, with the routines, we can see that the game is not like that anymore. It’s another way.”

“Without training, it’s impossible. I would say that they’re trying to do the positions we want, the idea we want, to try to have more ball. But obviously, a lot is missing. And that’s felt in the lack of opportunities. The lack of routines is very noticeable.”

“If one does the wrong move, it compromises the rest. It’s a bit like that. They have to read each other. If the ball is on one side, the one on the back of the colleague has to realise what kind of move he’s going to make according to the colleague in front. All of this takes a lot of routine. When there’s that routine, the games are much easier. There are answers for everything.”

Asked if the last few weeks at Old Trafford have been the most intense of his career, Amorim replied affirmatively, further stating that they’ve also been the most special ones.

He revealed he knew that it was always going to be difficult but the defeats have made things slightly more complicated.

Amorim thanked the fans for supporting him and the team even under extremely difficult circumstances.
