Shock update: Fabrizio Romano says United star’s loan move “has definitely collapsed”

Manchester United’s attempts at moving on Tyrell Malacia late in the January transfer window have failed as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

As per earlier reports, it seemed like Benfica were closing in on signing the left-back on an initial loan deal but as per the Italian journalist, both clubs could not agree on a loan fee and a future buy option and hence, the transfer collapsed.

“Tyrell Malacia’s loan move to Benfica from Man United has definitely collapsed. No agreement on loan fee and future buy option,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

But it seems like there are other clubs in the race for the Dutchman so there is still a chance the 25-year-old leaves before deadline day.

    Malacia to Benfica off

“Man United keep looking at options for Malacia as there are several loan requests,” Romano added.

With Patrick Dorgu’s arrival, the former Feyenoord star was unlikely to see too much action and hence Ruben Amorim gave the green light for his exit.

The left-back has struggled for form ever since returning from a long-term injury, getting substituted at half-time in each of his starts under the Portuguese boss.

He was former manager Erik ten Hag’s first signing and enjoyed a relatively successful debut campaign, making 39 appearances in all competitions and providing solid backup to Luke Shaw.

    Other options remain alive

But tragedy struck soon after as the Netherlands international suffered a knee injury which kept him out for the whole of last season.

While Amorim has tried to help him as much as possible, it is clear that Malacia would be better served playing regularly somewhere else.

Apart from the Portuguese giants, there has been reported interest in his services from Scottish giants Celtic as well as Spanish side Real Betis.

It will be interesting to see where he lands up at the end of the window. United will hope Malacia can impress during his temporary stint so that they can subsequently sell him for a higher fee in the summer.

Man Utd a ‘concrete option’ for Mathys Tel but Aston Villa present strong challenge for striker

Man Utd a ‘concrete option’ for Mathys Tel but Aston Villa present strong challenge for striker

Manchester United and Aston Villa have both been described as ‘concrete options’ for Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel, with contact made by both clubs.

Tel is one of the most in-demand strikers in the world currently. Having played just over 250 Bundesliga minutes this season, after directly contributing to 16 goals in all competitions last term, he could surely be doing more elsewhere.

A number of Premier League clubs, such as Villa, United, Chelsea and Tottenham have taken an interest, but Spurs were turned down by Tel after Bayern said yes to their proposal.

Now, according to Sky Sports, Villa and United are both ‘concrete options’ for the striker. It’s stated that a verbal offer has been launched by the Red Devils, which is currently under review.

It is also believed there have been ‘new calls’ from Villa ‘this morning’ to find out if a deal is possible.

Both clubs would need to convince the striker that the move is beneficial to him in regards to playing time, but reports have already suggested Tel would welcome a move to United, and an attacking spot has opened up at Villa after Jhon Duran’s exit.

Tel has been excluded from the Bayern squad for their next game, with the club aware he could leave, and clearly not against that idea after accepting a Tottenham bid.

The reason for the striker rejecting them was reportedly that he wanted to stay at Bayern.

However, insider Florian Plettenberg reports that that both an exit or Tel staying at the club are possibilities.

It remains to be seen what happens, but with clubs still swirling and seemingly in need of attacking reinforcements, it’s a saga which could go right down to the wire.

Man Utd: Rashford blames ‘fall out’ on Old Trafford chief with Amorim ‘ordered’ to axe ‘picked on’ star

According to reports, Marcus Rashford does not blame Ruben Amorim for his dire situation as he reckons a club chief ‘ordered’ his exit.

It was hoped that Amorim’s arrival would kickstart Rashford’s career at Man Utd, but the appointment of the head coach contributed to the speeding up of the forward’s exit.

Rashford has been heavily criticised for his awful performances since he scored 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign and his attitude has also been under scrutiny.

The Red Devils have struggled to get rid of Rashford as his huge salary has been a stumbling block, but it emerged on Saturday that he’s ‘close’ to joining Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

        The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed:

‘Aston Villa are close to agreeing a deal to sign Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United.

‘The proposed move has not yet been finalised as some details still need to be ironed out between all parties.’

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

‘Significant progress has been made though, with Villa moving to sort the financial terms, looking to satisfy United on salary coverage, and convince the player. The chance to play in the Champions League is an appeal for Rashford, with Unai Emery fully behind the approach. It is believed an option to buy will be agreed with Villa.

‘Villa are set to cover a significant portion of the forward’s wage alongside offering performance-related bonuses.

‘Villa manager Emery personally requested the club enter talks over Rashford as he is a big fan of the England international, whom he thinks is one of the world’s most dangerous attacking players, and believes he can help him recapture his best form.’

A new report from The Sun claims Rashford and Amorim ‘fell out’ shortly after the head coach’s arrival as he was accused of going on a night out before the match against Everton on December 1.

A source for The Sun said: “Marcus got called in by Amorim who said he believed he had breached discipline by going out.

“Marcus denied it and was adamant he had done nothing wrong. He asked the manager to show him the proof he’d been out and said something along the lines of, ‘Are you calling me a liar?’

“Their relationship has never recovered, and it’s hard to see how it ever will now.”

Despite this, the report claims Rashford blames Sir Jim Ratcliffe for his imminent exit as he reckons ‘he has been treated unfairly by Amorim on orders from the co-owner’.

The source continued: “Marcus thinks Sir Jim wants him out of the club and has basically told head coach Ruben Amorim to get him out. He might just have met his match with Sir Jim.

“Marcus feels like he is being picked on. In the early days of training under Amorim, he was trying to learn new systems and other players were also struggling — but he was the one who was getting more vocal criticism.

“He knows he needs to leave but he’s shocked that no big team has pulled out all the stops to get him.

“There’s been interest but financially it’s a complicated deal and that’s put quite a few teams off.

“Marcus has been left bewildered by how quickly his relationship with Amorim has disintegrated.”

Manchester United look set to finally offload Marcus Rashford after a month-long negotiation process and surprisingly, the Mancunian seems to be headed to Aston Villa.

It seemed like Barcelona was his club of choice after he revealed his desire for a new adventure but Unai Emery’s persuasion and the Catalan giants’ indecision ultimately seem to have made the decision for him.

With Antony having already departed on loan, Ruben Amorim could be left short of options up front given the poor form in front of goal of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Which is why the Portuguese has asked INEOS for help and it seemed like the club was focussing on trying to get a deal for Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich over the line in the closing stages of the January window.

          United looking at Bailey

The 19-year-old has already turned down Tottenham Hotspur, preferring the option of moving to Old Trafford where he could earn immediate minutes.

But now, The Athletic have claimed that the young Frenchman is not the only option being eyed with Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey also being considered.

“Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel and Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey are options being considered by Manchester United ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Manchester United are weighing up offensive options to replace Marcus Rashford, with Leon Bailey among those discussed. Separate to Rashford loan.

Mathys Tel + Christopher Nkunku also considered as short-term replacements.

          — Laurie Whitwell (@lauriewhitwell) February 1, 2025

“Any move for Bailey would be separate from Marcus Rashford’s proposed loan move to Villa for the remainder of 2024-25. While Rashford predominantly plays as a left-sided attacking player, Jamaican international Bailey operates on the right flank.”

          Nkunku also an option

The Jamaican enjoyed a fantastic season last time out, netting 14 goals and registering as many assists but has not really got going this time around.

While the Red Devils have not started discussions with Villa, they are only looking at a loan deal for the 27-year-old should Emery allow him to leave.

Journalist Laurie Whitwell also claimed that Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku also remains a loan option but the Frenchman has other suitors as well.

Whether a deal for Nkunku means the Blues open up talks for Alejandro Garnacho remains to be seen. Amorim has made it clear he does not want to lose the Argentine.

Rashford reignites Man Utd transfer amid boost of target’s stance after ‘verbal offer’ with ‘medical completed’

According to reports, Marcus Rashford’s imminent move to Aston Villa boosts Manchester United’s chances of signing Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel.

In recent days, it’s looked increasingly likely that Rashford would miss out on a transfer as his huge salary and poor form have proven stumbling blocks.

However, it’s emerged that Aston Villa are set to win the race to sign Rashford, who is ‘close to agreeing’ a loan move to United’s Premier League rivals.

This is a huge boost for Man Utd, who have been looking to offload several talents to raise funds for a huge squad rebuild.

Lecce left wing-back Patrick Dorgu is set to finalise his move to Man Utd as Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth revealed on Saturday afternoon that he’s ‘completed his medical’.

READ: Ten blockbuster moves for the perfect end to the January transfer window

Man Utd could also add a new striker to their squad before Monday night’s transfer window. Sky Germany‘s Florian Plettenberg claims United and Villa are Tel’s ‘two concrete options’

‘Manchester United have made a verbal offer to Bayern Munich for Mathys Tel, which is currently under review.

‘As reported on Friday, Man Utd contacted Bayern and talks have been ongoing ever since, with negotiations already under way.

‘At this stage, there is no full agreement between Man Utd and Tel. There have also been new calls from Aston Villa this morning.

‘United and Villa are currently two concrete options for Tel, but both clubs also need to convince him of the project.

‘That is why he cancelled Tottenham on Friday, despite their agreement with Bayern for a loan with a purchase obligation of around £50m. Arsenal and Chelsea continue to monitor Tel’s situation.’

Sky Sports reporter Sheth has also explained why the potential arrival of Tel ‘rests on’ Rashford’s future.

‘Manchester United could move for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, once they have finalised a deal for Marcus Rashford’s departure to Aston Villa.

‘United have made their interest in a loan move known to Bayern. He is one of a number of targets the club are looking at.

‘United have always been in a position during this window of having to facilitate a departure before bringing anyone in.

‘It’s thought Tel is open to the move, after rejecting the chance to go to Tottenham Hotspur.

‘Man United are aware that there are other clubs in the Premier League and Europe interested in Tel.’

19-year-old Tel joined Bayern Munich for around £24m from Ligue Un outfit Rennes in 2022.

He’s impressed in fits and starts as he’s grabbed 16 goals in his 83 appearances for the Bundesliga giants, but he’s been a bit-part player this season and needs to play more regularly.

Patrick Dorgu has signed for Manchester United after completing his medical – The Athletic

Manchester United are close to announcing Patrick Dorgu’s signing after the Dane passed his medical and signed a five-year contract at the club.

As revealed by The Athletic, the former Lecce star signed the deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2030 with the option for another year.

“Patrick Dorgu has completed his medical and signed his contract ahead of being officially announced as a Manchester United player.”

The Denmark international will become the second signing of the Ruben Amorim era after Ayden Heaven completed his move from Arsenal earlier in the day.

              Dorgu passes his medical

Ever since Amorim stepped into the hot seat, he had prioritised wingbacks as an area that needed urgent attention as both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui were more suited to playing as traditional full-backs.

More importantly, United did not have a quality left-footed left wingback due to Luke Shaw’s continued injury problems while Tyrell Malacia seems to be on his way out after struggling for form ever since his return from serious injury.

Lecce were playing hardball over the 20-year-old’s price with Napoli even overtaking the Red Devils at one stage. But finally, INEOS got their man and for less than the media were reporting.

              Amorim will be delighted

The 20-time English league champions agreed an initial £25.2 million deal for the Danish star who will miss the Crystal Palace game on Sunday but is expected to make his debut for his new club against Leicester City in the FA Cup next week.

He was allowed to say goodbye to the Lecce fans for the last time on Friday and was named on the bench for the Serie A side’s game against Parma.

The versatile star did not end up coming on in the end. He was spotted enroute to Manchester and was asked about his feelings by Sky Sports to which Dorgu replied, “It’s an opportunity for me.”

The official announcement from the club is expected to come soon.

Amorim will hope Dorgu can hit the ground running with the head coach desperate for reinforcements out wide where United have really struggled.

United set to make big compromise to land jaw-dropping forward from stubborn parent club – report

With Marcus Rashford on his way out and Alejandro Garnacho’s future also up in the air, Manchester United need reinforcements up top or else Ruben Amorim could be left short-staffed in attack.

The Mancunian, after angling for a move to Barcelona for the whole of January, seems to be headed to Birmingham to join Aston Villa while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing the Argentine even though the head coach does not want to lose him.

The 40-year-old tactician cannot simply rely on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee for goals given their poor form which is why the Red Devils were looking to make a late move for Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich.

There was plenty of interest in the Frenchman with multiple Premier League sides in the race. In fact, Tottenham Hotspur even went ahead and agreed a deal with the Bavarian giants for the 19-year-old.

                Tel wants United move

But the forward rejected the North London side and there were reports that he could remain in Munich in case he did not receive the right offer.

United tried to win the race by offering the player the chance to earn immediate minutes upon the completion of his move with the forward, likened to Kylian Mbappe due to his playing style, eager to join Amorim’s side.

The Red Devils were hoping for a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer but as per TBR Football, not all Bayern officials want to see the France U21 international leave.

The only reason the player was mulling over a departure was because Vincent Kompany has hardly given him the chance to prove himself despite a good season last time out.

And United, who are growing desperate with less than two days to go for the window to close, are open to the possibility of landing Tel on a straight loan deal with no option to buy.

INEOS are not in favour of dry loans but in this case, in a bid to offer Amorim help they are willing to consider.

Bayern do not want to lose Tel permanently

“TBR Football can exclusively reveal that United are close to bowing to Bayern Munich’s wishes when it comes to the forward.

“United are pressing ahead with their own loan move for Mathys Tel – and TBR Football can confirm that the progress with Rashford has given United extra impetus as they want to make sure they are not left too short in attack.

“United are willing to do a straight loan for Tel – as TBR also revealed last week – while some at Bayern Munich do not want him to go permanently.”

Whether an option to buy can be included in the final hours remains to be seen. For now, United need another body in attack as Tel looks the most likely bet.

Aston Villa news: Marcus Rashford ‘agrees personal terms’ with statement signing one step away

Marcus Rashford has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Aston Villa, with the Midlands club and Manchester United closing in a loan agreement, and Champions League football beckoning for the forward.

Villa are closing in on the statement signing of Rashford. In terms of the profile of their squad, he would be the biggest name since they sold Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

Rashford has 87 Premier League goals to his name, but United manager Ruben Amorim has not included him in his side since early December, and Villa have quickly moved to the front of the queue to land him.

It was reported on February 1 that the Villans were ‘close to agreeing’ to sign Rashford, and the next phase of the deal has now been completed.

Indeed, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has stated that Rashford ‘has agreed personal terms’ with Unai Emery’s side.

Further to that, he states the deal is ‘imminent’, with only discussions on a buy option following the loan still going.

It had already been reported that Emery had spoken to the United forward to convince him to move, and Romano also states that Champions League football was a big lure.

Villa have made their way to the knockout phase, finishing eighth in the league phase, with 16 points, five wins, one draw and a couple of losses.

Champions League squads for the knockouts must be finalised by February 6, so Rashford will be eligible if the deal goes through.

The United man has not played in the elite European competition this season, given United’s poor campaign in the Premier League last season.

He only played four times in the Champions League last season, but Rashford has 12 goals and three assists in the competition in 33 games.

“The situation has changed”: Fabrizio Romano says forward and Amorim have patched things up, United stay now a possibility

INEOS have been working overtime on trying to reduce Manchester United’s bloated wage bill while also trying to steer clear of breaching any Profit and Sustainability rules.

Antony has already made his loan exit while both Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro also look primed to leave. The co-owners are also open to Christian Eriksen’s departure.

But selling an academy graduate would be of the greatest help in this window with regards to the club’s finances which is why Marcus Rashford leaving made the most sense after the Mancunian already made clear his desire to try a new adventure.

But owing to his poor form and humongous wages, not many permanent offers arrived and INEOS decided to put up both Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho for sale.

Garnacho-Amorim’s relationship did not start off strong

Both were deemed untouchable not too long ago, but the Argentine’s place in Ruben Amorim’s plans did not look like a natural fit which is why the winger was also reportedly open to leaving.

The Portuguese dropped him from the Manchester derby matchday squad citing off-field and on-field issues, demanding greater responsibility when not representing the club and more hard work on the pitch.

Ever since the, there has been plenty of interest from the likes of Napoli, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. But unlike Rashford, who just gave up, the Argentine has not stopped trying to win over the head coach.

So much so that he deleted his X account, and made an effort to try and play as a No 10 instead of a winger while also working extremely hard out of possession.

Even when not picked in the first team, the 20-year-old has not sulked and whenever he has come on, he has tried to make a positive impact and after the FCSB win, Amorim was full of praise for the Argentina international.

The 40-year-old tactician admitted that at the start it was not smooth sailing for either when it came to their relationship.

“I’m demanding in my way and sometimes it is hard to make the first impact. He changed right after that City game. He’s improving but it’s not from me — it’s the way he understands things. I just want to help him. He understands sometimes I am a different coach.”

As relayed by The Peoples Person, the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss is so impressed with the United No 17 that he has opposed INEOS’ plans of selling him in this window.

And now as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the pair’s relationship has improved greatly, so much so that the Carrington graduate does not look like he will be leaving Old Trafford any time soon.

                    Relationship much better now

“Alejandro Garnacho’s improved relationship with Ruben Amorim points to the Argentine attacker staying at Manchester United once the January transfer window closes, Fabrizio Romano told GIVEMESPORT.

“I think the public statements from Ruben Amorim are showing how the situation has changed in terms of relationship between the coach and Garnacho in the last 10-15 days. So I think there is still a possibility for him to continue at Manchester United.”

Napoli were the first to express an interest but after seeing numerous bids rejected, they have finally moved on to other targets. Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to persuade Garnacho to change his mind.

Chelsea seem like the only contenders who can snatch the versatile winger from United’s grasp but the co-owners have slapped a £80 million price tag on his head to dissuade domestic rivals.

Hopefully, Garnacho still remains at the Theatre of Dreams beyond February 3 and can continue to improve under Amorim as he looks to take the club back to the top.

                      Joe Hugill

Numerous Manchester United youngsters were in action this Saturday afternoon up and down the country.

Joe Hugill impressed in spite of a poor 1-5 home loss for his new side Carlisle United against Swindon Town.

He was given a rating of 7.6 on Sofascore and scored a wonderful consolation goal after 88 minutes.

The 21 year old gave the away side all sorts of problems as he also had three shots on target and one off target in the match. He made 2 key passes and completed 100% of his long ball attempts.

Dan Gore also made a strong impression in his first match for Rotherham United. He started on the bench but entered the fray after 27 minutes and played the rest of the game.

He provided an assist late in the first half when he produced a wonderful cross that was headed home by Sam Nombe. Unfortunately his team could not hold on as Birmingham City came back to win 2-1.

The 20 year old had a 58% pass rate and competed in seven aerial duels, winning two.

Sonny Aljofree took up his usual spot in the Accrington Stanley defence and completed 79 minutes of action before he was subbed off.

He made three clearances and won three out of his five aerial duels. Aljofree was also careful in possession, completing 82% of his passes.

Despite his defensive contribution, he could not stop his side from losing 2-1 at Port Vale.

Ethan Wheatley played 57 minutes for Walsall in a 2-2 draw with Salford City. He almost opened his senior account but he fired the ball off the woodwork. He also completed 83% of his passes.

Ethan Ennis was on the winning side as his Doncaster Rovers side came out on top 2-1 over MK Dons and he played 55 minutes before being substituted off. He had a 70% pass rate and one shot off target in the match.

Ethan Williams was also on the winning side as Cheltenham Town beat Chesterfield 1-0, playing 23 minutes of action.

James Nolan played the entire match for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as they beat Queen of the South 1-0 on an incredibly busy Saturday afternoon of action for numerous young Reds.
