“Possible PL return”: United on red-alert over shock £67m release clause for Europe’s best forward- report

Long-term Manchester United target Harry Kane has a surprise release clause in his Bayern Munich contract which could have been triggered for just £67 million in January.

Kane, 31, established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe while playing for Tottenham Hotspur – the club he joined as an 11-year-old after being released by local rivals Arsenal for being a “bit chubby”.

The England captain would score 213 times in just 320 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites, placing him second on the list for the division’s all-time top scorers – 47 goals behind Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

However, Spurs’ inability to consistently challenge for trophies despite possessing one of the most lethal forwards across world football eventually led Kane to push for a move away from North London. United were reported to be interested in a deal for the striker as Erik ten Hag sought to add goals and experience in equal measure to his forward line.

The presence of Daniel Levey at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium deterred United officials, however, as the club had faced difficulties in negotiations with the chief executive before.

Ultimately, it was Bayern Munich who won the race to sign Kane with the prospect of avoiding a transfer with a domestic rival a welcome relief for Spurs fans. The £100 million fee also helped.

However, reports suggest Kane would have been willing to entertain a switch to Old Trafford had it presented itself. And now, in a shock twist, a potential rekindling could be on the cards – if United are willing to stump the money and the forward retains an interest in Manchester.

A report from German outlet Bild, as relayed by TalkSPORT, reveals Kane has a “release clause in his Bayern Munich contract, which has dropped significantly in recent days.”

The 31-year-old forward was available for £67 million in January – a figure which will be “reduced to £54 million” in the winter window next year.

The report contends, “…clubs have the power to activate a release clause in his Bayern contract if they desire, according to Sport Bild, hinting that a return to the Premier League could be a possibility.”

United’s struggles in front of goal have coalesced perfectly with Kane’s relentless scoring since swapping North London for Bavaria in the summer of 2023.

The striker the Red Devils opted for in place of the Englishman, Rasmus Hojlund, has suffered a serious regression in his second season at Old Trafford after a promising debut campaign. Similarly, Joshua Zirkzee, signed to supplement the 22-year-old Danish international, has also struggled since arriving from Serie A in the summer.

Marcus Rashford – the only player capable of scoring regularly for United in the attacking unit – has seen his goal-scoring touch desert him entirely, as well as the ability to run or train properly. New head coach Ruben Amorim wasted little time in showing the 27-year-old forward the exit door at Old Trafford as a last-minute loan move was agreed with Aston Villa.

United are desperate for a goal-scorer. Bayern have arguably the best in the business in their ranks available at a reasonable price, even for a 31-year-old. It’s a deal which makes perfect sense on paper for the Reds; as long as Kane’s wishes are ignored.

The report reveals there is “no indication the 31-year-old wishes to leave Bayern. He has forged a life in Munich and is fervently hoping to end his trophy drought this season.”

Back to the drawing board for INEOS in the hunt for a new goal-scorer, even if this was a sketch which never felt like coming to life.

Relief for United fans as key defender’s injury not as bad as feared, could be back for Spurs – report

Manchester United star Luke Shaw is reportedly set to return to training in just a few days, with his fresh injury setback not as bad as initially feared.

Shaw hasn’t started for United since he was taken off with an injury during a win over Luton Town in February last year.

He made a brief return to action towards the end of 2024, making three substitute appearances under Ruben Amorim.

The England international didn’t last for long as he sustained another injury, which has kept him sidelined since. He was back in first-team training last week, sparking hopes that he was close to playing competitive fixtures once again.

This optimism was dashed earlier today after it emerged that Shaw had suffered a fresh setback, which would keep him out for an additional four weeks, depending on treatment and rehab.

However, it appears that the issue is not very serious.

Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler wrote on X, “Luke Shaw has suffered a setback in his return from injury but understand it’s not too serious. Could be back in training by early next week.”

This was corroborated by The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath who noted, “Luke Shaw will be back training on Monday, according to Manchester United sources.”

“Club have been cautious over 29yr-old returning to action after two months out.”

“Will miss FA Cup clash against Leicester but training at Carrington start of next week.”

United and Amorim will be hoping that this time round, Shaw manages to sustain a run of games without picking up an injury.

His return to the action will undoubtedly be heralded by Amorim, especially after the loss of Lisandro Martinez. A report covered by The Peoples Person related that Martinez tore his anterior cruciate ligament, meaning he will not play again this season.

Shaw can fill in at left-centre-back, ensuring that Martinez’s absence is not felt too sorely.

“The obvious one”: This United star tipped to replace Amorim favourite after season-ending injury

Manchester United’s recent defeat at home to Crystal Palace left Ruben Amorim with much to ponder once more after another shocking display at Old Trafford.

If the 0-2 defeat wasn’t enough, Amorim also lost one of his key players to a knee injury that looks set to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Centre-back Lisandro Martinez was stretched off with what has now been confirmed as cruciate ligament damage to his right knee.

United decided against dipping into the transfer market at the eleventh hour to sign cover for the Argentine with Amorim expected to find his replacement from the current crop.

As reported by The Express, former Scotland international Ally McCoist has suggested Diogo Dalot could be the answer to losing Martinez and Amorim could deploy the Portuguese in the left-sided centre-back role as part of the back three.

The Scot believes due to the continued absence of Luke Shaw, Dalot will be the one to step into Martinez’ shoes.

Shaw was expected to provide Amorim with another option for the second half of the campaign but has unbelievably suffered yet another injury setback just days after returning to first-team training.

“I think Diogo Dalot’s the obvious one. I mean, I don’t know what’s going on with Luke Shaw. That’s another one.

“If he’s going to continue to play that three at the back, the obvious one would be Dalot. I know Shaw’s played centre-back before, if they can get him fit. I don’t know how far away he is,” he told Express Sport.

McCoist continued by stating he feels Dalot’s best position is on either side of a back four but given Amorim’s insistence on sticking with his back three, he sees the 25-year-old as the right man for the job.

“It’s a little bit of a shame because of the way he plays that back three. I think Dalot wide in the back four has been one of the plus positions and one of the plus marks.

“It suits him getting up and down, and you would obviously take that away from him if he moves to centre-back, but I think that’s the obvious choice,” he said.

Martinez’s injury was nothing if not ill-timed, given the recent form of World Cup winner who was getting back to his best after a slow start to the campaign.

However, given that United’s January incomings were in defensive areas, Amorim is relatively well positioned to be able to find adequate cover for his missing star.

Leny Yoro could find himself set for an extended run in the first team whilst new signing Patrick Dorgu will allow either Noussair Mazraoui or Dalot to play as a centre-back if needed.

“I don’t like it”: Club chief reveals baffling reason why high-profile January deal for United star collapsed

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has confirmed that a January move for Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho collapsed because of the player’s unrealistic wage demands.

All through the winter transfer window, there was speculation over Garnacho’s future amidst a belief that United were ready to sell him for the right price.

As a homegrown star, Garnacho’s fee would count as 100% profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Napoli and Chelsea were mentioned as the two clubs with the strongest interest in the Argentine.

Antonio Conte’s side even made a bid for Garnacho but United turned it down as they held out for a bigger sum. Negotiations carried on late into the window but an agreement could not be found.

Now, Napoli chief Giovani Manna has insisted that they did indeed lodge a big for Garnacho but the real reason why the transfer didn’t get over the line is because of the 20-year-old’s excessive wage demands.

Manna also indicated that Garnacho’s wage demands for a move to the Diego Armando Stadium shifted midway through negotiations.

He said at a press conference [via Manchester Evening News], “We pushed for Garnacho before Kvara [Khvicha Kvaratskhelia] left, but he wanted a salary we couldn’t justify.”

Another attacking player Napoli were also looking at was Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, whom they also failed to sign.

“We lost time on big names instead of moving earlier on the right profiles.”

“Garnacho and Adeyemi were close, but we don’t want to create false expectations. If a player changes his stance midway and suddenly wants different conditions, I don’t like it. If you want to come to Napoli, you should want it from the start.”

He added, “We tried to replace Kvara, but January is tough—strong players rarely move, and some valuations didn’t align with our financial parameters.”

“We won’t compromise on salary structure.”

On Napoli’s plans ahead of the summer, he noted, “When you have money, prices rise. Summer is different—more availability, clubs need to sell first. We won’t overpay or go beyond our financial structure.”

“We have a clear strategy. Some clubs can afford things we cannot, and that’s fine—it aligns with our history and values. But Napoli is financially stable, in the black, and not in debt. We will not make reckless signings just to satisfy public pressure.”

So far this term, Garnacho 35 appearances for United across all competitions, registering seven goals and six assists.

He and his teammates are back in action on Friday when they host Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester for a fourth-round FA Cup clash.

Ruben Amorim is ‘out of his depth’ as Richard Keys suggest he may ‘want out already’

Ruben Amorim is ‘out of his depth’ as Richard Keys suggest he may ‘want out already’

Richard Keys feels Ruben Amorim may already ‘want out’ of Manchester United, as he’s ‘out of his depth’ and must ‘learn fast if he wants to stay in the job’.

United have struggled under both permanent managers this season. When Erik ten Hag was dismissed, the Red Devils were in the bottom half of the Premier League, and they remain there under Amorim.

In rather grim reading, the former Sporting CP boss became the fastest United manager to five home league losses, when being beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace on February 2.

Pundit Keys felt that United were poor, and Amorim’s decision were equally as bad, with the mindset of the manager coming into question.

Keys wrote in his blog: ‘There’s not much to say about United this week. Poor again wasn’t it? But it always is when they have to take a game to the opposition.

‘If they’re sitting in a low block and stopping the opposition from playing they’re ok. If they have to take a game to teams they struggle, which is why they’ve now lost seven home games.

‘As for playing [Kobbie] Mainoo as a false 9? And you’ve got [Rasmus] Hojlund and [Joshua] Zirkzee available. What are you actually saying to those players with a decision like that?

‘I’m afraid Amorim looks totally out of his depth. I wanted it to work, but it isn’t. He’s going to have to change and learn fast if he wants to stay in the job. I’m still not convinced he doesn’t want out already.’

Amorim was slammed for his tactics following the loss, with the strikers left on the bench for Mainoo, a midfielder who had never played up top before.

Broadcaster Julien Laurens branded the selection ‘ridiculous’ and stated the reason for the loss was more on him than it was anything else.

It is felt by many that things will get worse before they get better, and Amorim has to come up with a way of changing something or it will end up being a very poor season for United.

“For sale again…”: Deeply unpopular INEOS transfer policy set to be repeated this summer – report

Manchester United remain reportedly reluctantly open to the departures of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo in the summer if suitable offers arrive for the youngsters.

Jamie Jackson (The Guardian) reveals the pair were available for “sale in the winter market” due to the financial situation at Old Trafford.

The Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR) are exerting acute pressure on United with the costly mistakes of the past finally catching up with the club.

There are few candidates within Ruben Amorim’s squad who would command a considerable fee on the transfer market due to  a combination of poor recruitment and the team’s dismal form over the past eighteen months.

As such, players like Garnacho and Mainoo, who have been rare bright spots for their club in this period, would represent an attractive option financially to generate significant funds.

The pair’s status as academy graduates means their potential sale would constitute a treasure trove from a PSR perspective as the fee received would amount to ‘pure profit’.

And it’s this reason why Old Trafford officials would reluctantly consider offers for both players this summer ahead of another “difficult” transfer window.

Jackson contends, “Manchester United face another difficult transfer window in the summer because of limited finances, with the ability to considerably strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad dependent on accruing a profit from player sales.

“The number of players whose sale would draw a sizeable profit for the summer window is also limited. Rashford’s loan terms with Villa are thought to include a buy option for £40m. As a homegrown player, his fee would count as 100% profit under profit and sustainability rules, and funds would be saved by his lucrative contract being taken off the books three years before it ends in 2028.

“Alejandro Garnacho, valued at around £70m by United, and Kobbie Mainoo at £80m-plus are two other homegrown players who were for sale in the winter market and will be again in the summer. But selling one or both would mean having to find a replacement.”

There would be undoubted uproar amongst the Red Devil fanbase if the sale of either player was sanctioned, which INEOS will be aware of when planning the club’s transfer window this summer.

The immediate focus will be the continued shifting of United’s expensive older stars – Rashford, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Jadon Sancho (currently on loan at Chelsea) – before any deals for Garnacho or Mainoo are considered.

United keeping a “close eye” on “absolute freak of nature” ahead of blockbuster summer raid – report

With Casemiro and Christian Eriksen likely to be on their way out, Manchester United need quality in the middle of the park to replace them.

The Brazilian has hardly featured under Ruben Amorim and could even depart this month while the Dane has struggled to impact games and the head coach is open to his departure as he seeks for more intensity in his ranks.

And as per recent reports, the club are looking at the Championship for diamonds in the rough with Chris Rigg said to be one of the targets.

TBR Football have now claimed that the Red Devils also have his Sunderland teammate Jobe Bellingham on their radar and scouts were present to watch both the stars during Sunderland’s 3-2 win against Middlesbrough on Monday.

                United scouts watching Jobe

“TBR Football can exclusively reveal that Arsenal and Manchester United sent scouts to watch Sunderland’s 3-2 win against Middlesbrough on deadline day.

“Arsenal and Manchester United’s primary purpose of visiting the Riverside Stadium was to scout Sunderland duo Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg.

“Arsenal scouted Rigg in November and have kept a close eye on him and Bellingham regularly this season — as have Ruben Amorim’s side.”

The 19-year-old, described as an “absolute freak of nature” has four goals and three assists for the Black Cats this term, and while he primarily plays as an attacking midfielder, the former Birmingham starlet can do a lot more.

He can play all across the midfield and even up front, such is his versatility, which is why plenty of European sides are monitoring his progress.

                Plenty of interest in him

Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid are both interested in Jude’s brother and it is only a matter of time before a move to an elite club.

And as recently relayed by The Peoples Person, despite United’s keen interest Jobe also seems to have the same mindset as his brother and he is likely to leave for a big club in the continent instead of playing in the Premier League.

Whether INEOS can change his mind anytime soon remains to be seen. Hopefully, in case they miss out on him, they can at least land Rigg.

Plenty of elite English top-flight clubs have been looking at the Championship with its conveyor belt full of rich talent with United not really picking up on this trend. Hopefully, INEOS are changing it for the better.

Man Utd decide new transfer ‘top priority’ with Old Trafford chief ‘aggressive’ in one area amid ‘interesting’ reveal

Manchester United have reportedly decided their new ‘top’ transfer ‘priority’ heading into the summer after they landed Patrick Dorgu in January.

Man Utd focused on outgoings during the January transfer window, with the exits of Marcus Rashford and Antony to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively on loan boosting their budget.

These exits funded their move to sign a new left wing-back as they paid an initial fee of around £25m to sign 20-year-old Dorgu from Serie A outfit Lecce.

The Red Devils were also linked with targets in several other positions with Ruben Amorim‘s side lacking a top-tier forward amid their struggles in front of goal.

A new report from Sky Sports has revealed why Man Utd opted against sanctioning a late ‘panic buy’ while a new ‘top forward’ is their ‘top priority’.

READ: Seven loanees who could ’embarrass’ and ‘humiliate’ parent clubs like Rashford and Man Utd

Man Utd reportedly refused to sign Spurs newbie Mathys Tel for a couple of reasons as they have ‘allowed more freedom in the summer’. Another ‘interesting element’ has also been noted.

‘Kolo Muani went to Juventus, Christopher Nkunku did not want a loan move from Chelsea, Leon Bailey was a no-go from Villa and United showed they wouldn’t panic buy with Mathys Tel.

‘Bayern Munich wanted a £5m loan fee from the club for the unproven 19-year-old and did not want to include a buy option.

‘United felt they would be developing the player for the benefit of the Bundesliga giants and whomever they would eventually sell him to. Like Arsenal, they decided to pass on the player who eventually joined Tottenham.

‘United were sensible in the winter window to allow more freedom in the summer. A guaranteed goalscorer is a priority and has been for several seasons.

‘An interesting element is that in Omar Berrada, Wilcox and the rest of the senior executive team, the club now have people who would aggressively pursue a target they want rather than not even try.’

‘The defeatism over Harry Kane still hangs heavy over United, as does the non-action over Erling Haaland when they had a head start thanks to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

‘While there is still belief Rasmus Hojlund can fulfil his potential and there is admiration over Joshua Zirkzee’s personality and professionalism, United need a talisman in front of the posts.’

The report also claims Man Utd chief Wilcox has also ‘led an aggressive approach’ in one department.

‘The signing of Ayden Heaven, 18, from Arsenal, formed part of a wider drive to increase United’s pool of young talent, following Diego Leon and Chido Obi-Martin as recent examples.

‘Technical director Jason Wilcox has led an aggressive approach to ensure that the pathway to the first team is well stocked, with even the profile for the senior side itself focusing more on younger stars that have amassed top experience, as seen with Leny Yoro and Dorgu.’

United to battle European rival in race to sign Brazilian defender with bid already in place – report

Manchester United are allegedly working on signing Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca this summer.

With the winter transfer window closing just two days ago, Man United fans could be justified for feeling disappointed following what was an underwhelming volume of deals at what has been a precarious time at Old Trafford.

While United manager Ruben Amorim succeeded in signing Patrick Dorgu form Lecce, thereby adding a much-needed reinforcement at left-back, the lack of further signings in January was concerning.

After all, fellow signing Ayden Heaven is 18 years old, meaning he may only be eased into the first-team gradually over the medium term.

Despite the quiet winter transfer period, it appears that United may be playing the long game, targeting further signings this summer.

Fichajes reported this morning that United are looking to sign Wesley during the next transfer window.

“Manchester United have decided to enter the race for Wesley and have made him a priority target for the next transfer window,” the report read.

“The need to strengthen their defence amid an impending restructuring has led the English club to set their sights on the young Flamengo right-back,” the article acknowledged.

“However, it will not be an easy operation, as Zenit of Russia have already put forward an offer of 30 million euros, which makes it clear that the competition for the Brazilian will be intense. The Mengão board already assumes that retaining the player will be an almost impossible task.”

Given that Wesley’s Flamengo contract runs through 2028, United will need to submit a competitive offer in order to lure him away from Brazil, particularly if they hope to beat Zenit to his signature.

Although Amorim will need to rely on the squad he has got for the remainder of the season, the United manager may yet receive the financial backing he needs from Ineos in order to rejuvenate his team with some much-needed fresh signings.

Still, it may take some convincing for Ineos to release transfer funds, given the strict cost-cutting measures that they have implemented at the club in recent times.

Manchester United star Amad has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award after a series of scintillating displays in a red shirt in January.

The 22-year-old winger has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for the Red Devils.

Amad has returned an impressive 9 goals and 7 assists in all competitions, despite often being deployed as a right wing-back by Ruben Amorim or, previously, as as a substitute by Erik ten Hag.

Four of these strikes came in the league in January – one at Anfield to clinch a draw against bitter rivals Liverpool and a sensational hat-trick to complete a comeback victory over Southampton at Old Trafford.

However, it’s not simply Amad’s goals which have caught the eye of admirers of his stellar performances this season.

The Ivorian international’s work rate off the ball has also been as impressive as his contributions on it.

Amad’s tireless work ethic and relentless pressing stand him in direct contrast to other attackers at Old Trafford in recent years, though Villa Park has recently welcomed one of these perpetrators while the Greek League hosts the other.

The pressure which has already emerged for the 22-year-old to provide the main attacking thrust of an otherwise lacklustre forward line is significant.

The departures of Antony and Marcus Rashford on loan in the winter window, and the continued abject form of strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have left United reliant on Amad.

Alejandro Garnacho’s displays have improved in recent weeks after Amorim dropped the Argentine for the Manchester Derby at the same time as Rashford. However, the 20-year-old’s improved standards in training have seen him fully reinstated into the first-team, though he remains inconsistent in front of goal.

Bruno Fernandes, the club’s captain, has often been placed in central midfield by Amorim in an effort to improve the team’s ability to progress the ball from deeper on the pitch.

This has left Amad as one of the sole attacking threats in a side desperately short on experience and goals in the opposition box.

And it’s the fact that the Ivorian has surpassed expectations to assume this role as the backbone of United’s attack which has seen him nominated for the prestigious award by the PFA.

The other nominees are; Justin Kluivert (Bournemouth), Jean-Phillipe Mateta (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Bryan Mbuemo (Brentford), and Alexander Isak (Newcastle).

United fans can vote for the club’s undoubted frontrunner for player of the season here.
