David Ornstein: United make key decision on replacing injury-prone defender this summer

Matthijs de Ligt was an indispensable part of Manchester United’s starting XI earlier this season before picking up a back injury at the beginning of December. The Red Devils were looking for Raphael Varane’s replacement in the summer of 2024 when they were handed the opportunity to sign the Dutch defender from Bayern Munich. De Ligt’s career at the Allianz Arena had not unfolded as expected, and he opted for a reunion with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, the Dutch manager lost his job a few months later in October, with the English giants opting to appoint Ruben Amorim as his replacement. De Ligt retained his importance under the Portuguese manager, slotting effortlessly into a back three. He was part of the team that reached the Europa League final last season but ended up second best to Tottenham Hotspur. The 26 year old, however, refused to dwell on that disappointment and was rock-solid at the start of the new campaign. De Ligt’s 2025/26 Season De Ligt played every minute of the first 13 Premier League games under Amorim and was a dominant force at the back. Such was his impact that he was adjudged the club’s Player of the Month for November, suggesting that United had resolved their defensive issues. However, disaster struck at the beginning of December, after the Dutchman was sidelined with a back issue. While it was not initially considered serious, fans soon grew concerned, with the player failing to return to the pitch ever since. In his absence, the Red Devils parted ways with Amorim and appointed Michael Carrick as the caretaker manager until the end of the season. United have been outstanding under the Englishman, climbing to third in the Premier League table after 37 games and securing qualification for the Champions League. De Ligt’s presence could have further benefited the English giants, but a recent report states that he is now out for the rest of the season. The situation has prompted speculation regarding defensive reinforcements this summer, and acclaimed journalist David Ornstein has now provided an update on the matter. United not eyeing De Ligt replacement Speaking on NBC Sports, Ornstein said that United are not actively looking to sign a new defender this summer to fill De Ligt’s boots. He said: “Further back, we’ve had news today that Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery for a back problem.” “Many people may say that could send Manchester United into the market for central defence. I don’t think so as a result of that news because the surgery is said to have gone well.” “He will be back early in the season is the hope. If somebody leaves, then of course maybe replacing will be on the agenda, but I don’t think it is forefront of their minds at the moment.” Final Thoughts Despite his injury woes, United are reportedly willing to remain patient with De Ligt. Fans will now hope that the Dutchman can make a full recovery over the summer and return to his best next season. 🚨 OFFICIAL: Matthijs de Ligt will miss the World Cup after back surgery today. 🤕❌ “After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left. “We have one more game”: United superstar has his eyes on the top prize, Brighton had better be prepared

Manchester United assured themselves of a third-place finish in the Premier League, courtesy of their entertaining 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. It was the final home game of the season, and amid celebratory scenes, Casemiro earned a standing ovation on his final Old Trafford appearance in red. Goals from Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo sealed the deal, though the Cameroonian and Amad’s form will give Michael Carrick plenty to ponder. The soon-to-be permanent head coach will be delighted with Lisandro Martinez’s return to form, and his skipper’s all-action display. Bruno Fernandes delighted with equalling the Premier League record Bruno Fernandes equalled the league assist record and could have broken it easily if not for his teammates missing chances galore. Still, the Portuguese superstar thanked his United teammates for their help during the rest of the campaign for helping him earn 20 assists this season. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the 31-year-old said, “I spoke about that, everybody knew it was important. “They’ve been trying to score from my passes. I’m very happy for the assist and for the win and to finish the season on a high.” On winning so many personal accolades It has been a glorious personal campaign for the Portugal international, who has been crowned the FWA Footballer of the Year, the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, and the United Players’ Player of the Year. Naturally, the United No.8 was delighted with the accolades. “It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me, knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, that I was player of the season I am very grateful.” Fans would have wanted Bruno Fernandes to notch his 21st assist of the season at home and go top of the assist leaderboard. It was not to be, but he will be giving it one last go in the final game of the season against Brighton next week. Bruno Fernandes eyeing assist number 21 “I got to 20 today, let’s see we have one more game. It’s the highest I’ve done in the Premier League so I am very happy with it.” The Seagulls better be prepared. Carrick sends clear message to Ineos over what must happen for United to “get better” after win vs. Forest

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick spoke to reporters after guiding his side to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. United beat Forest United mathematically guaranteed themselves third place in the Premier League table after beating Nottingham Forest in their final home game of the season. Luke Shaw, starting his 37th league game, broke the deadlock inside five minutes with a well-taken goal. But Forest drew level shortly after the break through Morato, who headed home a sublime delivery from Elliot Anderson. United retook the lead almost immediately after when a blocked Bryan Mbeumo shot fell kindly to Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian made no mistake, expertly tucking the ball into the bottom corner. Mbeumo then doubled United’s advantage, turning in a Bruno Fernandes cross. The assist marked Fernandes’ 20th this season. This means that he has matched Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry for the all-time Premier League assist record. Morgan Gibbs-White beat Senne Lammens in the 77th minute, but United were well worth all three points at home. Carrick spoke to reporters in his post-match press conference and addressed various topics including the result, Shaw’s contributions, Fernandes making history and others. Carrick’s presser Asked whether it was the perfect afternoon, Carrick answered, “It was a good day. We were really conscious about finishing on a high. We’ve made some really good strides as a team and as a club. It’s easy to get to this stage and that extra spark is not there. To finish like we did, for so many reasons, makes it’s a good day for us.” On what needs to happen for United to move to the next level, Carrick explained, “There are two sides to it, I think. Understanding the position of where we want to get to, compared to where we’ve been. Understanding what steps that will take. I do genuinely think it was a fantastic achievement to get where we are, the players deserve a lot of credit for that. You just want to keep improving.” “The higher up the league you go, the harder it gets. You have got to make big steps but it’s harder to make those steps. Evolving the group is one thing for sure, that’s no negative on the group as it is now, you just want to keep pushing forward. We’ve got a really good group of players that we want to keep trying to improve and get better.” “If that’s additions, that’s additions. Some of the younger players will be better for it as well with another season of experience at this club. You just want to keep moving forward, there’s no magic ingredient to doing that. It’s hard work, bit of brains and a bit of having good players as well.” Asked whether there are an updates on his future, Carrick replied, “It’s been pretty clear that over the coming days there will be clarity on the situation. Today was all about getting the right result and shining the light on individuals so whatever the news is going to be, I’m sure you will get it in a few days.” On if Cunha, Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should be aiming for 20 goals next season, Carrick remarked, “It’s been a really good first season for all the boys who have come in. Getting judged on goals and assists, I get that for attacking players. I think the overall coping and adapting and improving as the season goes on is important. Next season will present different challenges and backing it up is another challenge.” “Really positive with those players in particular and I’m sure there’s more to come.” On what he said to Fernandes after equalling the assist record, Carrick revealed, “It’s a little bit chaotic down on the pitch and in the dressing room, so I’ve not had much to say. It’s a tricky one, he’s dealt with it really well, to be honest. For me, watching from the side, you’re thinking ‘what’s going through his head? Is he looking for a pass or to score. Is he second-guessing it?’ I think he coped with it fantastically well and it was a really nice moment for everybody.” “Credit to him for that. It’s not easy. But he always puts the team first and today was another one of those days, even though he’s going to get the praise because it is a fantastic achievement.” Carrick said of Shaw, “It’s difficult for anybody to achieve that when there’s so many games. Sometimes, it’s no fault of your own. Unfortunately, injuries are a part of football and there’s other things that come into play. So to start every game is a really fantastic thing to be able to do.” “Next season is a new season and there’s different types of runs of games. That’s part of adapting but that’s being older and experienced and managing your body. He’s hit that stage, Luke now, where he’s got an awful lot of experience. He’s been here for a long time and he knows the club.” “Next season, his experience will be valuable, no matter how many games he played.” The 44-year-old coach insisted that Shaw, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, is deserving of a return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup. “I certainly think so. I’ve not got much sway in the matter at all. But his consistency and what he’s capable of doing. His performance levels, his experience, his attributes that he’s got. He’s a fantastic full-back and I think all three of them have done their chances no harm recently.” United are next in action next Sunday when they go away to Brighton & Hove Albion. United trio achieve incredible PL feat following Nottingham Forest victory – report

Manchester United’s decision to invest heavily in attack last summer has already paid dividends this season. The Red Devils were looking to upgrade their frontline after a disappointing campaign in which they struggled to score goals. United started the 2024/25 campaign under Erik ten Hag, but removed him from the hot seat at Old Trafford in October 2024. Former Sporting manager Ruben Amorim was appointed as the Dutchman’s replacement, but his arrival hardly improved the team’s output in the final third. The Red Devils ended the campaign in 15th place in the Premier League table, managing just 44 goals in 38 games. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur by a 1-0 scoreline. INEOS quickly identified the attack as an area requiring immediate attention, and spent over £200 million on Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. With one game left in the campaign, United’s minority owners will be very pleased with that decision. United’s rise this campaign United endured another managerial upheaval this season. Amorim kept his job last summer after a disastrous end to the campaign, and saw the club invest heavily in players suited to his tactical system. While the team’s output in the final third improved significantly, the Red Devils struggled to get results. The Portuguese head coach ultimately lost his job in January, with INEOS opting to appoint Michael Carrick in the caretaker role until the end of the campaign. That has proven to be another masterstroke, with the team going on an impressive run under the English manager. Having recently earned qualification for next season’s Champions League, United have now confirmed third place in the Premier League table following Sunday’s 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest. The Red Devils have scored 66 times in 37 games this season, the third-highest tally after Manchester City (75) and Arsenal (68). A marauding Bruno Fernandes, who has registered the joint-most assists in a Premier League season (20), has been key to United’s rise, but their new attacking signings have also played a major role. United trio make history Mbeumo and Cunha both found the back of the net against Forest this weekend, taking them to 10 Premier League goals this season. With Sesko also scoring 11 times in the league since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams, United’s new-look attack has now made history this campaign. According to Statman Dave, this is the first time in Premier League history that three forwards have scored at least 10 goals in their debut campaign for a new club. Sharing the data on social media, he wrote: “Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško have all scored 10+ in the Premier League this season.” “It’s the first time in the competition’s history that three forwards have reached double figures in their debut campaign for a new club. What a window.” Mbeumo has registered 11 goals and three assists in 33 appearances for United, while Cunha has managed 10 goals and four assists in 35 outings. Sesko, who is currently sidelined with a shin injury, has found the back of the net 12 times in 32 games, while also setting up one goal. Final Thoughts United’s attack looks settled at the moment, and the trio are likely to get even better next season. INEOS will hope to repeat the trick in midfield this summer, and the right investment could transform the Red Devils into title contenders. Big-money United transfer now finalised after major development on Sunday – report

Manchester United had a field day going forward against Nottingham Forest, scoring three times in the Old Trafford win. Former United stars Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund also enjoyed their outing for Napoli on Sunday, as they both got on the scoresheet in their 3-0 win over Pisa. The victory in Pisa secures qualification to next season’s Champions League for Napoli, as well as seals the fate of Hojlund. Manchester United’s first summer sale now over the line According to The Athletic, Rasmus Hojlund is set to join Napoli in a permanent €44 million (£38m) transfer from Manchester United, after the Serie A giants secured Champions League qualification. United also received a significant loan fee for the former Atalanta man at the start of the campaign. Hojlund moved to Naples on a season-long loan deal with a conditional obligation to make the move permanent should Napoli secure a place in Europe’s premier club competition for 2026-27. The win over Pisa gives Napoli an unassailable five-point lead over fifth-placed Como with one game of the Serie A season remaining. Hojlund assisted Scott McTominay for the first-half opener and added to his goal tally in second-half stoppage time. This was the Denmark international’s 23rd goal involvement for the team in blue, a very encouraging return, all things considered. The €44m fee is substantially less than the initial €75m United paid to sign him, but it still makes Hojlund the club’s fifth-largest sale of all time and ensures the Red Devils avoid making a loss on his amortised book value. Time to replace Joshua Zirkzee United replaced Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko, who has enjoyed a promising maiden season in the Premier League. As such, it is fair to say the transfer has worked out for all parties. Now, INEOS’s aim should be to bring in another striker to replace Joshua Zirkzee, who, like Hojlund, has struggled with the Premier League’s physicality and intensity. In our TPP 2026 Transfer series, I suggested United should explore the possibility of bringing back the prolific Danny Welbeck on the cheap, with the majority of the club’s budget likely to be spent on overhauling the midfield. United need to spend huge sum to sign former academy star who has evolved into a Premier League warrior – opinion

With a return to the Champions League secured and the summer transfer window just weeks away, many Manchester United fans have begun to debate potential signings that will give the squad the depth required to compete on four fronts next season. Last season’s transfer window was an unmitigated success, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and Senne Lammens hitting the ground running and delivering excellent performances across the season. Benjamin Sesko took a little longer to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, but has since scored some huge, match-winning goals for the Red Devils. United fans will hope the club can match the success of last summer’s transfer window by not only strengthening the starting eleven but ensuring Michael Carrick is always armed with a strong bench brimming with talent. In the 2026 Transfer Series, each writer at The Peoples Person is choosing their top ten transfers for this summer and explaining why each is important. These are Mike Walsh’s picks. Robert Lewandowski With Robert Lewandowski set to become a free agent when his contract at Barcelona ends this summer, this seems like the sort of opportunity United would be crazy to pass up. The Polish goal-machine could not only help lighten the workload on Sesko but the experienced striker would be the perfect role model for the young Slovenian. Lewandowski is still a proven goal scorer too, having found the back of the net 18 times this season. At 37 years of age he would, of course, not be able to play every minute, but he would be a great option off the bench and add more experience to the dressing room at Old Trafford. A one-year deal would be a shrewd bit of business. Diogo Dalot Diogo Dalot has been a polarising figure amongst United fans for years now. Some weeks he will continuously whip in the most delicious of crosses, but in other weeks his lack of positional awareness will cost the team a goal. Full backs are an incredibly important position in the modern game, often stepping into midfield and dictating the tempo of matches. Unfortunately, the Portuguese international just doesn’t have the capabilities to do that and, therefore, United should move him on and look to replace him with a more technically gifted and defensively astute full back. James Garner Granted, this move seems unlikely given James Garner recently signed a new contract at Everton, but every player has their price and the draw of Champions League football can often be impossible to resist. The England international has enjoyed a phenomenal season at Everton, playing 39 times and registering an impressive ten goal involvements. The former United academy star has become a warrior in midfield, often dominating his opponents with his aggressive tackling and relentless running. These attributes would complement Kobbie Mainoo perfectly, allowing him to operate further up the pitch safe in the knowledge that Garner is behind him to feed the ball forwards and snuff out any potential counter-attacks. Manuel Ugarte After two seasons at Old Trafford, it seems fair to say Manuel Ugarte has not lived up to expectations. The former PSG man has not adapted to the speed and intensity of the Premier League, often lagging behind play and giving away cheap, unnecessary fouls. Since arriving at the club in January, Carrick has made it clear he does not trust the Uruguayan international and, on the few occasions Ugarte has been given minutes, United have seemed both less cohesive and less defensively sound. If United want to become a slicker attacking unit next season, Ugarte unfortunately just does not have the qualities required. Michael Kayode Michael Kayode has enjoyed a truly exceptional breakthrough season at Brentford and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting right backs in the Premier League. At just 21 years of age, there is a huge amount of room for the Italian to develop into a world-class full back. Kayode has made 35 appearances for Brentford this season, producing a number of dominant displays on the right-hand side. Kayode is capable of shutting his opposing winger out of the game entirely and threading neat passes into midfield. Matthijs de Ligt Once touted as one of the most exciting young defenders in the world, injuries have largely derailed what could have been a legendary career for Matthijs de Ligt. This season has been no different; the Dutchman has been unavailable for United since November with a back injury. With four competitions to compete in next season, United will play many more games than this season and in order to do that, the Red Devils need dependable, ever-present players. Unfortunately for de Ligt, he just does not fall into that category. His talent is unquestionable when he is on the pitch, but sadly he spends more time in the treatment room and therefore the club should look to move him on. Marcos Senesi United rarely take advantage of the free agent market and that is something the club needs to work on. Marcos Senesi presents the perfect opportunity for the Red Devils to do just that and improve their back line without spending a penny on a transfer fee. Senesi has made 31 appearances for Bournemouth this season, establishing himself as a leader in their backline in the process. His impressive performances have seen the club mount an unlikely challenge for European football next season. He would bring technical excellence and positional awareness to United’s back line. Mateus Fernandes In a season that has seen West Ham United fighting against relegation to the Championship, Mateus Fernandes has managed to stand out as a quality central midfielder in the Premier League. Regardless of whether West Ham avoid the drop or not, the Portuguese international looks set for a move and United should work to ensure Old Trafford is his destination. Fernandes has made 40 appearances across all competitions this season, registering an impressive nine goal involvements. If he were to sign for United, he would provide great depth in one of the most important positions on the pitch and offer energy and attacking intent. Lewis Hall Luke Shaw has enjoyed a fantastic season this year, but with more games on the horizon next season the Englishman is going to need some help sharing the load. Lewis Hall would be a fantastic addition to initially share the load with Shaw before eventually making the position his own. Under Shaw’s tutelage, Hall would likely progress into one of the most exciting full backs in the country. He is a left back who loves to attack and provide width and, given time, he would surely form a formidable partnership with Cunha on the left flank. Carrick delivers emotional tribute to “fantastic” United star after pulsating 3-2 win over Forest

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has delivered a glowing tribute to Casemiro after his final home game for the club, a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. Emotional farewell All eyes were on Casemiro as the players walked out of the tunnel for United’s final home game of the season. Before the match, it emerged that fans would unveil a special banner to honour the midfielder, who has been a faithful servant since arriving from Real Madrid four years ago. Casemiro could not hide his emotions as he made his way onto the pitch accompanied by his kids. The Brazilian was superb yet again, helping United to all three points against Vitor Pereira’s men. Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo grabbed the goals for United, who are now guaranteed to finish in third place this term. Casemiro was taken off later in the second half and replaced by Mason Mount, who saw out the rest of the game alongside Kobbie Mainoo. When exiting the pitch, the five-time Champions League winner was once again afforded a thunderous applause and he could be seen shedding tears on the bench. After the final whistle, chief executive Omar Berrada presented Casemiro with a gift as a recognition of his services to the club. Casemiro was also given the chance to address supporters and expressed his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the years. ❤️ @Casemiro pic.twitter.com/m1I1FbAnR8 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) May 17, 2026 Carrick lauds Casemiro Speaking to the media after the final whistle, Carrick said about Casemiro, “Casemiro has been a very, very good player for a long time. We appreciate everything he has done certainly since I’ve been here. He’s been fantastic.” “I think a part of football is things come to an end and you have to evolve and adapt. There have been some big players over the time I’ve been here who have left the club and you’ve got to find a way of moving forward. It is a challenge. It is part of the game.” “We certainly thank him for all he’s done because he’s had a big impact since he’s been here and certainly since I’ve been here.” Asked about Fernandes hitting 20 assists, Carrick remarked, “It is what he’s good at. He’s got a real knack and a gift of creating opportunities, sensing space and knowing what is around him. It was an important moment for him and for all of us. I think you could see how everyone enjoyed the moment.” “There were two or three times when maybe we thought it was going to happen before and you could see him running through at times and I was thinking ‘is he going to shoot or is he going to pass?’ but I didn’t want it to overtake, and Bruno’s the same, in terms of didn’t want it to overtake the team and how important it is.” “It was nice he was able to do it for himself and then to score on the back of it. For everyone to celebrate it was a nice moment.” Carrick said about the victory, “It was very important. I wanted to finish strong. I spoke about that before the game. We’ve put ourselves in a really good position to have this day in front of our supporters. We wanted to have a really good performance and win the game as well.” “Made it a little more difficult for ourselves at times but I actually thought some of the football was fantastic and we could have won by more. It was a really good day for us to win the game like we have, to see the supporters and the atmosphere in the stadium, it is special again.” On Shaw, Carrick said of his former teammate, “That makes me feel old! I am delighted for Luke. He has been consistent and able to stay fit and have a really good level of performance. He is such a good player. To have him in that moment it was nice for him to score, his performances are very good and he’s been here for a long time.” “He knows it. He’s had the ups and he’s had the tougher moments and he’s come through it. He is still here and has a lot of experience now. We expect a lot from him but today was a nice day for him and to get that moment was a nice way for him to finish at home.” Asked about his future and whether an agreement is in place between him and United to continue as head coach, Carrick replied, “There’s nothing. I said clarity about coming towards the end of the season and the end of the season. Nothing has changed. If there’s something to be said either way then it will be announced.” “Today was about the game and finishing the season strongly for the players and for the whole club. We will see what happens in the next few days.” He added, “There are a lot of rumours. It is quite interesting seeing what is true and what is not. That’s not for me to get involved in. But listen, clarity will come in the next few days.” United are next in action next Sunday when they go away to Brighton. On their final home Premier League game of the season, Manchester United clinched an entertaining 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Goals from Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo ensured the three points and assured the Red Devils of a third-place finish in the Premier League. It was a great day all around, with Casemiro receiving a warm farewell on his final Old Trafford appearance in red, while Bruno Fernandes accrued his record-equalling 20th league assist of the season. There were a couple of concerning performances from Mbeumo and Amad, but Michael Carrick will be delighted with the return to form of Lisandro Martinez. Lisandro Martinez was imperious at the back The Argentine, who has missed large chunks of the season due to injury, struggled with his discipline since his return. However, he was near flawless against Forest. The 28-year-old completed eight clearances, while blocking three efforts on goal. He also won four of his six duels in total. With the ball, the former Ajax ace was equally effective, completing 96% of his passes, including one key pass. Lisandro Martinez equally effective with the ball The Argentina international found a teammate with seven out of his eight attempted long balls, while also completing a 100% of his dribbles (all stats via sofascore). These are the types of performances fans have come to expect, and INEOS will be hoping for Lisandro Martinez to stay fit and produce the goods more often. With Ayden Heaven impressing whenever he gets the chance, and the co-owners looking to strengthen at the back, the United No.6 cannot afford to slack off. Or else, he might suddenly find his place under threat, and could be forced to pack his bags. Carrick confirms United defender who’s endured a “tough time” is set to leave in emotional post-match speech

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick addressed supporters after his side beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 in their final home game of the 2025/26 Premier League season. United beat Forest Luke Shaw broke the deadlock inside five minutes with a well-taken finish from inside the box. The goal was just Shaw’s fourth in the Premier League. Morato drew Forest level when he got on the end of a sublime delivery from Elliot Anderson to head home. But United responded almost immediately through Matheus Cunha. Bryan Mbeumo’s blocked shot landed kindly into the path of the Brazilian, who produced an excellent finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. Mbeumo, who had scuppered several clear-cut scoring opportunities, finally got on the score sheet in the 75th minute to double United’s advantage. The Cameroonian’s goal was assisted by Bruno Fernandes, who has now matched Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne’s all-time Premier League assist record (20). Morgan Gibbs-White grabbed Forest’s second to set up a thrilling finish but United held on for all three points, meaning they are guaranteed to finish in third place. After the final whistle, Carrick spoke to the Old Trafford crowd. Here’s everything the 44-year-old coach had to say. Carrick’s speech Carrick said, “What a way to finish the season for us at home, what a game that was, that’s how we like it. We’ve got to make it hard for ourselves! We’ve got to make it exciting and I thought we played ever so well today.” “It’s unbelievable to see this place like this. It is such a special place, it does magical things, we’ve had some unbelievable times over the years and this season we’ve had some big, big days that we’ve all enjoyed.” “I want to thank the players, I have to say to everybody this is such a good group of players, and I know we are here for football and the performance, but they are a really good group of people and I think that is important.” “Especially at this football club. That we sacrifice for each other, we look after each other, and they desperately want to do well, the players.” “I of course have to thank the backroom staff, the support that they’ve given all of us over a period of a time, the initial first team staff, the backroom staff, the coaches, all of the staff throughout the whole club, the effort and sacrifice that everyone goes to is what makes this place so special.” “We have players leaving us and out of contract. Casemiro has obviously been incredible. We have a really good connection and nice to see the response you give for him. We have Tyrell [Malacia] as well, which I mentioned to the boys before kick off, he’s had a tough time with injuries since he’s been here but please show your appreciation for Tyrell.” “Lastly, listen, it’s a huge thank you from me for the support this season. We enjoy the ups, we enjoy the downs, we support each other and the best thing about this place is you lot, the supporters, and the thing is for me, it’s easy to support and it’s easy to enjoy and easy when everything is good and everything is nice and everyone joins in and everything is great, really supportive.” He added, “And I think the connection I felt when I walked in this place 20 years ago it’s in some of the challenging times and tougher times is when we stick together. This place is incredible. You’re a one-off. That is what the football club is all about. Thank you.” “I want to say massive thank you for the season. It is unbelievable to see this place so full. I hope you enjoyed today. We’ve had some big moments, big goals and big results in this place over the last few months. Hopefully there will be a few more of them. Take care and have a good summer.” United are next in action next Sunday when they go away to Brighton and Hove Albion. Fantastic day out for United at Old Trafford, but the form of these key stars will give Carrick plenty to ponder in the summer

Manchester United rounded off their home Premier League campaign with an entertaining 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. It was a great day all around for the fans, seeing Casemiro for the final time at the Theatre of Dreams and watching Bruno Fernandes grab the Premier League assist record. The home side opened the scoring through a rare strike from Luke Shaw, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo rounded off the scoring. The scoreline could easily have been in double digits if all the players had taken their chances. The club captain could have held the assist record outright as well. Fantastic day out for United, but misses galore Michael Carrick, who is expected to remain in charge for next season, will be delighted with some of the attacking play. But with the Red Devils back in the Champions League and expected to challenge on all four fronts from next season, he will be demanding more from certain key individuals. Bryan Mbeumo, who finally ended his 11-game goal drought, could have had a hat-trick as the Cameroonian missed three glorious opportunities before scoring from the most difficult chance. He has looked a shadow of the player who could do no wrong in the first half of the campaign. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad struggling for form The former Brentford ace looks as though his confidence has taken a beating and he needs to regroup mentally in the summer. The same goes for Amad. The standout player under Ruben Amorim, the Ivorian seems to be suffering from a real lack of confidence when going forward. He seems hesitant when trying to beat his man and always chooses to pass rather than shoot when clean through on goal. With United unlikely to strengthen out on the right, it is imperative the former Atalanta ace gets his act together. The 20-time English league champions will round off the season with an away contest against high-flying Brighton, and hopefully, the duo can show Carrick they belong at this level and have the mental strength to overcome this rut.
