Champions League football will be back at Old Trafford from next season, and as things stand, Michael Carrick is expected to spearhead Manchester United’s challenge on all four fronts. It will be a huge season for the Red Devils, and INEOS can ill afford to get things wrong in the transfer market. From outgoings to incomings, not only will the co-owners need to be ruthless, but also smart, in order to maximise their budget. The Peoples Person is running a series on what would constitute the club’s ideal window, and here is my take. Instead of the usual big name signings, I have gone for a few smart incomings that will strengthen the squad as a whole, and we all know the 20-time English league champions have a severely weak bench. Regarding outgoings, most fans will want the likes of Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee out. In addition to the duo, I also have a few hot takes of my own, with the focus on sales which might help the club earn a decent profit. Outgoings 1. Diogo Dalot: Let’s be honest, the Portuguese is neither a great defender nor very adept in attack. He is very rarely injured, which is a great attribute to have, but apart from a lot of passion, he does not bring too much to the table consistently and is often guilty of brain-fade moments out on the pitch. Signed for a mere £19 million, the Portugal international is reportedly wanted by the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. And they can have him for £50 million, an amount that would go a long way in helping INEOS go big to possibly sign Elliot Anderson or even Aurélien Tchouaméni. 2. Lisandro Martinez: When fit and firing, there are few better than the Argentine. But the problem is he is hardly fit, and when he is available, the World Cup winner always plays like he is on the edge. That passion is a great thing, something fans love, but it is becoming a problem in terms of discipline. He returned from injury, only to see red against Leeds. And while it was a harsh call, the former Ajax ace was lucky to escape the same punishment against Sunderland. INEOS have a ticking time bomb on their hands, someone whose skillset makes him an attractive target for multiple big clubs, including Barcelona. Signed for an initial £46.8 million, United should ideally recoup more. 3. Matthijs de Ligt: The Dutchman was United’s best player in the first half of the current season. However, since November, he has been a no-show and now he has undergone a back operation. Not too many players can return to the same level after that. Even if he does, his injury record is poor, and there is a reason why Bayern Munich let him go for a paltry £38.6 million. Given his age and ability, he will be in demand once he returns to action and United will surely earn a book profit when they sell him. If not in the summer, January might be the time to cash in. 4. Radek Vitek: For far too long, United have wasted their academy talents by either holding on to them for too long, resulting in the player’s value tanking, or by playing them at academy level, which youngsters have outgrown. Loathe to admit it, but Manchester City and Chelsea are masters when it comes to selling academy products for pure profit. Vitek is back from a brilliant loan and he has shown that he is ready to step up to Premier League football. As things stand, he will not want to play as a backup keeper to Senne Lammens and be restricted to a few cup appearances. The Red Devils can earn a decent amount from his sale, all of which will count as pure profit. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount, and Altay Bayindir are some of the other players who need to go along with all the senior options currently out on loan. Incomings In midfield, INEOS need to move heaven and Earth to seal the deal for Elliot Anderson ahead of Manchester City. For that, they might need to win a bidding war and a couple of smart incomings will have the club save money to go all-out to win the midfield race. 1. Stefan Ortega: United will need a backup keeper with Bayindir and Onana likely to depart. Signing the former Manchester City ace makes a lot of sense. He is Premier League-proven, knows how to handle the pressure in big moments, and most importantly, he is available on a free as his contract with Nottingham Forest ends in the summer. 2. Ross Barkley: United are expected to sign three midfielders, one for £80 million, another for £40 million and a squad option for £20 million. Why not sign a player in the last bracket for free? INEOS know all about him from his time at OGC Nice and the Englishman can play in multiple positions in the middle of the park. Yes, he has injury concerns, but he will be tasked with starting 10 games maximum. If used properly, the former Manchester City star can fill a key gap in the squad and his experience and quality could go a long way in helping the Red Devils at crucial junctures. 3. Dusan Vlahovic: Soon-to-be free agent, and he knows his way in front of goal. Unlike Robert Lewandowski, the Serbian has age on his side and will be raring to prove himself in the Premier League. Carrick can alternate between him and Benjamin Sesko from game to game depending on the opposition and occasion. His wages might be an issue, but with Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho all leaving, there should be space in the wage bill. 4. Marcos Senesi: Another free agent and Premier League proven. With Martinez disappointing with his poor fitness record and disciplinary issues, another Argentine might be the one to benefit. These are not just random names being thrown into the mix. United have been linked with most of them at some point in time. With all the money saved through these dealings and earned through player sales, surely United can win any midfield transfer battle while also strengthening out wide. It was the final home game of the season, and amid celebratory scenes, Casemiro earned a standing ovation on his final Old Trafford appearance in red. Goals from Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo sealed the deal, though the Cameroonian and Amad’s form will give Michael Carrick plenty to ponder. The soon-to-be permanent head coach will be delighted with Lisandro Martinez’s return to form, and his skipper’s all-action display. Bruno Fernandes delighted with equalling the Premier League record Bruno Fernandes equalled the league assist record and could have broken it easily if not for his teammates missing chances galore. Still, the Portuguese superstar thanked his United teammates for their help during the rest of the campaign for helping him earn 20 assists this season. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the 31-year-old said, “I spoke about that, everybody knew it was important. “They’ve been trying to score from my passes. I’m very happy for the assist and for the win and to finish the season on a high.” On winning so many personal accolades It has been a glorious personal campaign for the Portugal international, who has been crowned the FWA Footballer of the Year, the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, and the United Players’ Player of the Year. Carrick sends clear message to Ineos over what must happen for United to “get better” after win vs. Forest
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick spoke to reporters after guiding his side to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. United beat Forest United mathematically guaranteed themselves third place in the Premier League table after beating Nottingham Forest in their final home game of the season. Luke Shaw, starting his 37th league game, broke the deadlock inside five minutes with a well-taken goal. But Forest drew level shortly after the break through Morato, who headed home a sublime delivery from Elliot Anderson. United retook the lead almost immediately after when a blocked Bryan Mbeumo shot fell kindly to Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian made no mistake, expertly tucking the ball into the bottom corner. Mbeumo then doubled United’s advantage, turning in a Bruno Fernandes cross. The assist marked Fernandes’ 20th this season. This means that he has matched Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry for the all-time Premier League assist record. Morgan Gibbs-White beat Senne Lammens in the 77th minute, but United were well worth all three points at home. Carrick spoke to reporters in his post-match press conference and addressed various topics including the result, Shaw’s contributions, Fernandes making history and others. Carrick’s presser Asked whether it was the perfect afternoon, Carrick answered, “It was a good day. We were really conscious about finishing on a high. We’ve made some really good strides as a team and as a club. It’s easy to get to this stage and that extra spark is not there. To finish like we did, for so many reasons, makes it’s a good day for us.” On what needs to happen for United to move to the next level, Carrick explained, “There are two sides to it, I think. Understanding the position of where we want to get to, compared to where we’ve been. Understanding what steps that will take. I do genuinely think it was a fantastic achievement to get where we are, the players deserve a lot of credit for that. You just want to keep improving.” “The higher up the league you go, the harder it gets. You have got to make big steps but it’s harder to make those steps. Evolving the group is one thing for sure, that’s no negative on the group as it is now, you just want to keep pushing forward. We’ve got a really good group of players that we want to keep trying to improve and get better.” “If that’s additions, that’s additions. Some of the younger players will be better for it as well with another season of experience at this club. You just want to keep moving forward, there’s no magic ingredient to doing that. It’s hard work, bit of brains and a bit of having good players as well.” Asked whether there are an updates on his future, Carrick replied, “It’s been pretty clear that over the coming days there will be clarity on the situation. Today was all about getting the right result and shining the light on individuals so whatever the news is going to be, I’m sure you will get it in a few days.” On if Cunha, Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should be aiming for 20 goals next season, Carrick remarked, “It’s been a really good first season for all the boys who have come in. Getting judged on goals and assists, I get that for attacking players. I think the overall coping and adapting and improving as the season goes on is important. Next season will present different challenges and backing it up is another challenge.” “Really positive with those players in particular and I’m sure there’s more to come.” On what he said to Fernandes after equalling the assist record, Carrick revealed, “It’s a little bit chaotic down on the pitch and in the dressing room, so I’ve not had much to say. It’s a tricky one, he’s dealt with it really well, to be honest. For me, watching from the side, you’re thinking ‘what’s going through his head? Is he looking for a pass or to score. Is he second-guessing it?’ I think he coped with it fantastically well and it was a really nice moment for everybody.” “Credit to him for that. It’s not easy. But he always puts the team first and today was another one of those days, even though he’s going to get the praise because it is a fantastic achievement.” Carrick said of Shaw, “It’s difficult for anybody to achieve that when there’s so many games. Sometimes, it’s no fault of your own. Unfortunately, injuries are a part of football and there’s other things that come into play. So to start every game is a really fantastic thing to be able to do.” “Next season is a new season and there’s different types of runs of games. That’s part of adapting but that’s being older and experienced and managing your body. He’s hit that stage, Luke now, where he’s got an awful lot of experience. He’s been here for a long time and he knows the club.” “Next season, his experience will be valuable, no matter how many games he played.” The 44-year-old coach insisted that Shaw, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, is deserving of a return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup. “I certainly think so. I’ve not got much sway in the matter at all. But his consistency and what he’s capable of doing. His performance levels, his experience, his attributes that he’s got. He’s a fantastic full-back and I think all three of them have done their chances no harm recently.” United are next in action next Sunday when they go away to Brighton & Hove Albion.
