Ruben Amorim’s defensive blueprint: The key changes United must make to silence Tottenham

Manchester United face an uphill battle when they travel to London to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon. Spurs have been in fine form this season, finding themselves two places ahead of Man United on the Premier League table at sixth. Despite the hosts’ impressive form, Man United certainly have the ability to pull off a valuable away win, provided that they heed some important warning signs ahead of this colossal clash. Defensive focus is key While United have conceded a massive 16 goals in 10 games, they’ve managed to come away with victories thanks to their impressive attacking lineup, which has scored 17 goals. Unfortunately for manager Ruben Amorim, this “we’ll just score more” approach might not work against the resolute Spurs defence. To date, the Spurs have conceded just eight goals in the league, giving them the joint second-best defensive record. This means that United cannot simply expect a strong attack to compensate for defensive vulnerabilities. Amorim’s men will need to ensure that they do not display defensive weakness as they did at times against Nottingham Forest last weekend, which brings us to the second point. Beware of the warning signs During the Forest clash, United gave in to an age-old habit that they seem incapable of shaking off. They ignored the obvious warning signs. In the later stages of the first half, Forest started to dominate the match, continuously pushing into United’s third and taking shots. While United managed to enter the break with a 1-0 lead, they did not take note that Forest were inching closer to levelling the scoreline. Straight after kick-off, Forest continued their relentless attack, scoring twice in two minutes in order to grab the lead from right under a shell-shocked United. While United managed to restabilise themselves and clinch an equaliser, they could have enjoyed a resounding win away from home had they not lost focus during the critical first few minutes of the second half. Previously, during their 4-2 win over Brighton, United almost scuppered their two-goal lead due to the same issue. While United seemed to clearly dominate the flow of play, by the time that Brighton started threatening them in the second half, Amorim’s team did not appear to take much notice. By this stage, the visitors took note of United’s concentration lapse, scoring twice in the final 16 minutes in order to pile on the pressure, which was entirely unnecessary. United’s attack is undeniably effective this season, showing much improvement as the matches have worn on. Still, so too is the Spurs’ front line. As a result, it appears that the final outcome of this match will hinge on the defensive battle. Should United be able to up their defensive awareness while producing their usual attacking masterclass, they could come away with some valuable points away from home in this juicy clash.
