Harry Amass: Contract update emerges as United remain locked in talks

Manchester United have come under fire over their reported decision to sell one of their brightest academy prospects.

Luke Shaw’s poor injury record is well known by now, which explains why INEOS are keen to sign another left-back this summer.

Lewis Hall of Newcastle is the dream target, but with funds tight and Chelsea willing to spend big to re-sign their former player, there are doubts whether the Red Devils can pull off the deal.

Michael Carrick could play either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui on the left, but both are far more adept on the right.

Why United need another left-back

Patrick Dorgu is also capable of playing there, but the head coach has seen how effective the Dane can be when utilised further forward.

This is where the club’s famed academy comes into the picture. Harry Amass, who already made his first team debut under former boss Ruben Amorim, is raring to go.

He enjoyed a successful loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of last season, before injury derailed his second temporary stint with Norwich City.

The 19-year-old looks like a totally different player compared to what the fans saw two seasons ago. He has bulked up, and has already caught the head coach’s eye by scoring and grabbing an assist against Rosenborg last week.

Harry Amass could save INEOS millions

All of this should have been grounds for United to keep their faith in the England Under-19 international, but recent reports stated that the 20-time English league champions are open to a sale for a mere £6 million.

It would be a major mistake to sell the promising starlet without even giving him the chance to prove himself, and The Manchester Evening News have an interesting update on this.

Harry Amass’ contract situation is a bit dicey, with his current deal valid until next summer. However, United do have the option of triggering an automatic one-year extension.

That will likely give INEOS more headroom to manoeuvre. Interestingly, the report further adds that no final decision has been taken on the young full-back.

INEOS yet to decide Harry Amass’ fate

A new contract could yet be offered, and he could be sent out on loan instead of being sold. All options remain on the table.

“Harry Amass has been linked with a permanent move away in this transfer window. Fans have noticed that his contract expires next summer, which would mean he has entered the final year of his deal, but United have the option to extend by 12 months, and that gives the club some breathing space.

“Amass’ camp are considering options ahead of the new campaign. He has received interest from the Championship again, but whether United are willing to sanction a sale remains to be seen.

“If Amass is not in Michael Carrick’s plans for the season, it would make sense to send him on loan, but that would mean he would return next summer with a year left on his deal, provided United trigger their option.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail

“United would get a lower fee for Amass next summer in that scenario. The way United could protect themselves is by offering Amass a new contract. The situation is ongoing, and both parties are in dialogue over his next steps.”

Hopefully, United come to their senses soon. There is no point in offloading a player with such high potential, that too for only £6 million.
