Wayne Rooney believes Ruben Amorim adopted a slightly different approach heading into the clash against Sunderland over the weekend.
The Manchester United boss will be well aware that he is at risk of losing his job in the hot seat the longer the side’s dismal form continues.
Amorim buys time with much-needed three points
As such, he gave himself some respite over the international break after United overturned the Black Cats 2-0 at Old Trafford last Saturday.
It came after a calamitous showing away to Brentford the week prior, which culminated with United losing 3-1 and sustaining their third defeat in six matches.
However, they have since moved up to 10th following matchweek seven, and are only four points adrift of the Champions League places.
The win over the Wearside outfit came courtesy of both Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko, whose first-half goals were enough for United to see out the victory on home soil.
Sesko, who completed a £73.7 million move from RB Leipzig in the summer, has now found the back of the net in back-to-back appearances, prompting optimism from the Red Devils faithful that he can oversee a prolific goalscoring campaign in his maiden term.
Rooney was also pleased with what he saw from his former side – particularly how Sesko and debutant Senne Lammens played integral roles throughout the game.

“Amorim changed his style a bit this weekend by being more direct with the goalkeeper and Sesko, and it worked, so you have to give him credit for that,” the United legend told Sky Sports.
“The result was big and you want to see consistency. Winning four or five games in a row. For Amorim, time will tell. He is a really good young manager, but what we have seen so far, doesn’t tell us that.
“He’ll be doing everything he can to turn that around. The game has changed a lot. You look for the leaders, but there are not many of them in world football.
“You hope they can pull together and get through it. It’s a difficult period.”
