Malachi Sharpe: United academy winger on trial following release

Manchester United academy graduate Malachi Sharpe has been spotted on trial at Colchester United.

The 20-year-old winger departed Manchester United last month at the expiry of his contract, ending a five-year stay at the club.

Sharpe featured in a 0-2 loss to Charlton on Tuesday night but managed to impress during his cameo in the second half.

Possessing blistering pace, Sharpe displayed good technique off the bench at the JobServe Community Stadium, which will have served him well in his fight for a contract.

Search for a new club

The youngster has already been on trials ahead of his release, including one at Burnley in March, when he featured for Burnley’s U21s.

In a case of déjà vu, Sharpe’s trial at Burnley also saw him feature for 45 minutes in a 0-2 loss.

The winger is not the only academy graduate on trial this summer; recently released Sonny Aljofree and Brandon Williams have also been on the search for a new club.

Both players have featured in pre-season preparations for League Two club Rotherham United.

Sharpe’s time at United

Joining from Derby County in 2021, Sharpe spent five years at Manchester United, moving up the age groups and into the U21s.

Sharpe proved a useful option for the U21s, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 28 appearances, but he has had injury struggles in recent seasons.

Troubling defenders with his pace, Sharpe excels at breaking into space in behind, but he often let himself down with inconsistent finishing.

Sharpe will be looking to hone those skills in Essex by hopefully earning a contract at the League Two club.
