Amorim’s half-time team talk at Goodison Park unveils deep frustration with United squad – The Athletic

2-0 down at half-time. An abject performance devoid of creativity, control or courage. Staring down the barrel of a 13th defeat in the league as a rambunctious Goodison Park roars.

Some managers would have taken have taken the opportunity at the interval to lambast their players; channel their inner-Sir Alex Ferguson and unleash a hair dryer of a team talk to rally a second-half improvement. Others would have launched into a detailed analysis of what had gone wrong in the first half and what adjustments needed to be made to ensure the same mistakes were not repeated.

Nearly all would have taken the full fifteen minutes allocated to talk to their team. But not Ruben Amorim.

Short and Sharp

The Athletic reveals the Portuguese coach – who swapped Lisbon for Manchester in November to replace Erik ten Hag – has “tried many methods” to get through to his new squad since arriving at Old Trafford. But in the “tight confines of Goodison Park”, Amorim’s choice was to be “short and sharp.”

United’s head coach left the dressing room after only a few minutes with his players emerging early for the second half.

The report reveals Amorim “made his points in a few minutes”, imploring his players to “remember what they had drilled at Carrington and to carry out those instructions in the second half.”

United rallied to level proceedings with two quickfire goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, though the comeback did not happen immediately after Amorim’s half-time diktat.

The Reds were pushing for a winner in the final few minutes of the match, however, and were the better team in the second half, even if being superior to David Moyes’ Everton side is not a sign of progress.

In his post-match interview, Amorim implied the performance after his terse team talk would have been sufficient to have claimed all three points if it had been replicated in the first half, as had been drilled all week in training.

“In training, we continue to do the same. That’s why in the second half we didn’t change anything, we have to do the same thing but in a good way,” he explained. “We need to play the whole game.”

A Lack of Belief

Four days later, United would welcome Ipswich Town to Old Trafford. Amorim, speaking ahead of the evening fixture, acknowledged the disconnect between his players’ performances in training and their execution in match.

“Even the players we have we can improve a lot, I see that in trainings, we need to take that to the game,” he told Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports. “The only way I know to help them is to give them solutions to play on the pitch. But then they have to believe it. And to believe it is that when we are losing or in a difficult situation, and you feel that you cannot even build up one play, they have to stick with that and to believe in that.

“And that is the hardest part, because when we suffer a goal or have a bad moment, you feel the connection is not there, we lose ourselves. You feel we get lost a little bit. Sometimes it is more than football, more than tactics, it is in the players’ minds.”

A chaotic game ensued, characterised by misunderstandings, mistakes, but also mettle. United went in at half time with the game poised at 2-2, but a man down after Patrick Dorgu’s dismissal for a reckless tackle on Omari Hutchinson.

A bullet header from Harry Maguire opened the second half and handed the Reds a lead which they defended with their lives for the remainder of the game. The 3-2 win gave Amorim a slither of relief amidst a backdrop of increasing pressure at Old Trafford.

It was a spirited performance, even if there’s a growing sense this group of players operate better in a tactical set-up reserved for teams in the bottom half. When forced to try and control games or dominate their opponents, as you would expect from a top side, they quickly flounder and “get lost a little bit”, as their coach described.

Amorim will need to ensure his players begin moving in the right direction, starting with tomorrow night’s crucial Europa League knockout game against Real Sociedad.

Having already departed the Carabao Cup and FA Cup (which provided a route back into the Europa League), and with the team stranded in 14th in the Premier League, success on the continent remains the last opportunity for success this season.

Winning the Europa League gives first-seed qualification into the Champions League next year – an almost invaluable prospect for United, given the situation on and off the field. It would strengthen the club’s pull in the transfer market this summer as they seek to buttress Amorim’s squad for next season. And it would offer fans an olive branch back to a time when the Red Devils were a European heavyweight, rather than a domestic lightweight.

If United were to lose tomorrow night and exit the Europa League next week in the reverse fixture, there would be no hope of any success this season; there would be virtually no hope of success this summer; and Amorim would be running out of any semblance of hope for the next campaign before a ball has even been kicked.

The Portuguese coach will need to “get through to his players” this week; because the alternative is a bleak one to say the least.

Toby Collyer is back in training ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League tie at Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The energetic midfielder has not played since our previous match in the competition, away to FCSB in January.

If available for the 17:45 GMT kick-off, it could be a timely boost as Manuel Ugarte was not spotted during the session, covered live on MUTV.

In addition to Ugarte’s absence, there was no Harry Maguire in the session filmed by the cameras.

The centre-back was withdrawn during the gruelling Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham at Old Trafford and head coach Ruben Amorim had admitted he needed to check on his fitness in advance of the game at the Reale Arena.

It is understood that both Ugarte and Maguire look set to miss the game with minor knocks sustained at the weekend, but we will confirm the travelling squad when the players head to the airport.

Meanwhile, young striker Chido Obi is ineligible but did train while Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu can play, despite his domestic suspension.

The Reds have been without Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Amad due to injury.

Bayindir, Heaton, Evans, Shaw and Mount are continuing their individual rehabilitation programmes on different schedules to the main group.

Of course, we will cover the press conference in Spain this evening, with it due to start around 18:15 GMT.

United’s European hopes in peril as two of Amorim’s key men miss training through injury – report

Both Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte were absent from training today as Manchester United prepare for tomorrow night’s clash with Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

The competition offers the Red Devils the last hope of success this season after last weekend’s disappointing exit from the FA Cup on penalties at the hands of Fulham – the match Steve Railston (Manchester Evening News) reveals Maguire and Ugarte picked up their respective injuries.

United are currently languished in 14th in the Premier League table and any prospect of climbing into the European qualification spots are a practical impossibility, even if it remains a mathematical possibility.

Triumph in the Europa League, however, would gift the club first-seed entry into next season’s Champions League as well as a significant financial boost for winning the competition.

This seasons’ iteration of the Europa League did not permit teams from the Champions League to drop down into it. As such, there are only a few sides who should present a problem to United in reaching the final in Bilbao – with Real Sociedad being one such candidate.

And this is why the update that neither Maguire and Ugarte – both key players for Ruben Amorim since he took over at Old Trafford in November – participated in training is such a worrying one ahead of tomorrow’s trip to San Sebastien.

Alejandro Garnacho is training, but there’s no Harry Maguire or Manuel Ugarte. They both have minor issues that were picked up against Fulham #mufc

— Steven Railston (@StevenRailston) March 5, 2025

Tweet: Alejandro Garnacho is training, but there’s no Harry Maguire or Manuel Ugarte. They both have minor issues that were picked up against Fulham #mufc.”

Maguire, who turns 32 today, has enjoyed something of a renaissance in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system which relies on a tall, aerially dominant centre-back at the heart of the defence.

Similarly, Ugarte is an essential in the centre of the pitch given he has previously thrived under Amorim during their time together at Sporting.

The alternatives to the Uruguayan international – Casemiro and Christian Eriksen – are physically incapable of meeting their Portuguese coach’s demands in midfield.

It would be a major blow for Amorim to be unable to rely on either player against Real Sociedad tomorrow night, forcing him to compromise with a less suitable alternative given the number of injuries already in the United squad.

United face a limp end to a dismal season if they suffer a heavy defeat in Spain.

Amorim, already under increasingly acute pressure, desperately needs a positive result performance against Erreala to give himself some breathing room at Old Trafford. The 40-year-old just looks like he will be unable to rely on two of his trusted confidants on the pitch in order to do so.

Man Utd ‘want’ to hijack Sociedad move for West Ham star as his future ‘takes a different direction’

Man Utd are looking to beat Spanish side Real Sociedad to signing of West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd this summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 14th in the table after 27 games.

Man Utd made the decision to sack Erik ten Hag at the end of October before appointing Amorim, who has struggled to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Amorim has won just five of his first 16 Premier League matches since joining in mid-November and there are some rumours he could be replaced in the summer if things don’t improve.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday in a penalty shoot-out against Fulham, the only hope for Man Utd to end the season with silverware is in the Europa League.

Man Utd face Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash on Thursday and they will have an extra eye on the performance of Aguerd, who is on loan at the La Liga side from Premier League outfit West Ham.

Spanish publication Fichajes insists that Aguerd has ‘become a key player’ for Sociedad this season under Imanol Alguacil and that ‘has led the Basque club to seriously consider signing him permanently’.

However, Man Utd could now attempt to hijack that deal with the report adding that Aguerd’s ‘future could take a different direction’ as the Red Devils ‘have set their sights on him for the next summer transfer market’.

The Morocco international has ‘convinced the sporting management of Real Sociedad’ over a permanent move but ‘the situation has become more complicated with the appearance of interest from the Old Trafford team, who see the Moroccan as a viable option to reinforce their rearguard’.

Fichajes adds:

‘Manchester United are still looking for solutions to their defensive problems and believe that Aguerd would fit perfectly into their system. His adaptation to English football, after his time at West Ham, and his experience in La Liga make him an attractive profile for the Red Devils.

‘If the English club decides to go all out for the centre-back, Real Sociedad will have a very difficult time competing financially and could be forced to give up on signing him.

‘The outcome of this story will depend on the moves that take place in the coming weeks. While Real Sociedad continue to work on his permanent signing, the arrival of Manchester United could change the fate of the Moroccan defender, who will have to decide what his next step will be once his loan at the San Sebastian team ends.’

Man Utd ‘trying to convince’ Mainoo to stay as youngster is slammed for ‘ridiculous’ demands

Man Utd are reportedly looking to tie down Kobbie Mainoo on a new deal as the Red Devils youngster’s demands are outlined by his team.

There were rumours in the January transfer window that Mainoo and fellow Man Utd team-mate Alejandro Garnacho could need to be sold as the Red Devils looked to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Chelsea were the club reportedly leading the race for Mainoo if Man Utd failed to agree a new contract with the youngster as his contract expires in the summer of 2027.

But those rumours have gone away since the winter market and now the Daily Mail claim that Man Utd ‘have held fresh talks’ with Mainoo ‘in the hope of finally reaching an agreement in prolonged contract negotiations’.

The Daily Mail adds:

‘Mainoo’s representatives want a pay rise to £180,000 a week plus bonuses which would bring him in line with his team-mates and reflect his status as an England regular.

‘The 19-year-old, who has been out of action for a month with a calf injury, still has more than two years left on his current contract. United are hopeful of convincing the Stockport-born player that his long-term future is at Old Trafford and reaching a compromise in talks.

‘Although United withstood interest for both Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho in the January window, and lowered the wage bill by sending Marcus Rashford and Antony on loan, both academy graduates are likely to be targets for rival clubs again in the summer.

‘Kobbie Mainoo is valued at £70-80million and his sale would represent 100 per cent profit. United head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to keep hold of Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho

‘Todd Boehly’s Chelsea were revealed to be leading the chase should no contract emerge for Mainoo.’

When asked at the end of January if there were difficult decisions to be made because of the need to comply with PSR, Amorim replied: “That part is true. But I want players like Kobbie and Garnacho.

“The focus is that we have to improve our academy. And you have to bring more [through]. That is something that all the clubs in England have to take advantage of. The players that come from their academies. To play, to feel the shirt, but also to sell them. So our focus is to bring more [through]. The rest, I just want to prepare with both of them for the next game.”

Mainoo has been played in a more advanced role at times this season with Amorim starting him further forward for the first time against FCSB in the Europa League in January.

When asked about Mainoo’s impressive display in a new position, the Man Utd boss said at the time: “I don’t think it is about his contract. Everybody in England sees him as a very good player.

“He played in the European Championship final. I think it is more the position. He was not comfortable. Before, he was always playing. Now, he sometimes plays and sometimes not, he wasn’t comfortable, but maybe it is something to do with that.

“But I think the key point is the position. It is different for him. It demands a lot from him. [On Thursday], in that position, I feel that he was more happy to play. Simple as that.

“I don’t look at the movements, the way he touched the ball. I felt it just watching him. He was so happy on the pitch. That is important for me because if they are happy, they play better. I think he can change position.”

Mainoo’s £180k-a-week demands have caused shock among some Man Utd fans and YouTuber Mark Goldbridge called them “ridiculous”.

““180k a week for Mainoo lol,” Goldbridge wrote on X. “If it’s true, it’s ridiculous.”

United star’s agent explains why his client turned down rival offer to join current loan club

The agent of Manchester United star Antony, has revealed that the player’s decision to leave the club was motivated by a desire to play regularly – something that was no longer guaranteed in England.

Antony lost his place in the team under Erik ten Hag and also failed to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans.

United sanctioned his exit during the transfer window, allowing him to join Betis on loan until the end of the season.

The Brazilian has looked like a player reborn, scoring three goals and adding two assists in just seven games across all competitions.

He managed just 12 goals and added five assists in 96 games for the Red Devils despite being the club’s second-most-expensive signing of all-time after Paul Pogba.

Antony’s performances have given Betis hope of clinching European football – an objective that was aided by their victory over Real Madrid last weekend.

Unsurprisingly, Betis are keen on making his stay in Seville a permanent one, although United are believed to be asking for more money than they’re willing to fork out.

Betis CEO Ramon Alarcon recently revealed that Antony also wants to extend his stay at Estadio Benito Villamarín for at least one more year.

Antony’s agent – Júnior Pedroso – spoke to Marca [via SportWitness] and explained what led to his client’s temporary parting of ways with United. He also disclosed why they settled on Betis as the ideal place for the 25-year-old to revive his career.

Pedroso said, “We realised that Antony would have few minutes at Manchester United at a crucial time to recover his football, so I spoke to his brother Emerson about the possibility of a relocation on loan.”

“It was unanimous, La Liga was the ideal destination.”

He added, “We identified three or four clubs that could fit the bill and Betis emerged as the most promising option, so we started talking to [Manu] Fajardo, [Ramón] Alarcón and Ladrón de Guevara and later, with my partner Cristiano, we negotiated with Manchester United.”

“We spoke with two other La Liga clubs, one of them even presented a formal offer. He studied the team, the squad and the style of play, and decided quickly.”

“Several factors were decisive. The city of Seville, with a welcoming environment for Antony and his family; the style of play in La Liga, which fits his characteristics; the competitiveness of Betis; and of course, the work of Pellegrini.”

Pedroso noted that Antony even travelled with his partner to choose where they’d live.

On the winger’s time in Spain so far, Pedroso remarked, “An incredible experience, it seems like he has been at Betis for years, it was the best decision.”

The United loanee and his Betis teammates are back in action on Thursday as Real Betis take on Vitoria SC in the first leg of their Europa Conference League round of 16 fixture.

Don’t want to see him again!”: Club legend fumes at United loanee who is “really a bad guy” after defeat

PSV Eindhoven legend Rene Van de Kerkhof expressed his displeasure with Manchester United loanee Tyrell Malacia, following the club’s loss over the weekend at the hands of Go Ahead Eagles.

PSV suffered a 3-2 defeat league defeat, having been knocked out of the KNVB Cup by the same opponent just three days prior.

On Saturday, Oliver Antman’s brace and a goal from Victor Edvardsen proved decisive, rendering strikes from Luuk de Jong and Noa Lang mere consolation for PSV.

The result left Peter Bosz’s side eight points adrift of table leaders Ajax. Malacia started the game, playing all 90 minutes in his favoured left-back role. The game was only his third match for PSV since he joined them during the January transfer window.

It was an eventful occasion for Malacia, who also got involved in a half-time spat with Go Ahead Eagles striker Edvardsen.

It appears Van de Kerkhof – who won the title thrice with PSV – was not impressed with Malacia’s performance.

The club legend spoke on the Omroep Brabant podcast [as quoted by Voetbal Zone] and was highly critical of the United loanee, even suggesting he should return to Old Trafford.

“A Malacia like that is really a bad buy. I don’t want to see him again!”

“He should just go back to Manchester United, get rid of him.”

He added, “You can also blame technical director Earnest Stewart for that, he should have taken a closer look at him.”

If Van de Kerkhof was unhappy with Malacia’s weekend display, he is unlikely to have been pleased with what he saw during PSV’s 7-1 Champions League demolition by Arsenal.

The Eredivisie outfit were humiliated, although Malacia was somewhat decent, managing three key passes and as many interceptions. He also made two clearances and put in two tackles.

United star involved in heart-warming moment with journalist after FA Cup defeat – report

Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui was involved in a lovely interaction with a Muslim journalist after the club’s match on Sunday.

United’s Moroccan defender is a devout Muslim, who has regularly spoken about his faith during his career.

Commenting on the importance of religion in his life while at his previous club Bayern Munich he stated, “I have my religion. That’s number one in my life… [praying] helps me a lot to deal with things that don’t go my way, or things that turn out in my favour. This way of thinking helps me to go through life.”

The 27 year old recently met with the Manchester United Muslim Supporters’ Club at Old Trafford where he shared a message of “never lose sight of your dreams.”

The meeting came ahead of Ramadan which is one of the biggest moments in the Muslim faith’s calendar.

The period of daytime fasting began on the 28th February and it will end on the 30th March.

The Daily Mail report that after the game, where Mazraoui was allowed to have a drinks break to break his fast during the match versus Fulham, he met with a fellow Muslim journalist.

“One reporter, Aadam Haladh, waited patiently to see the Moroccan after the game to give him a tin of Medjoul dates as a gift for Ramadan.”

The United security staff allowed the reporter the opportunity to wait at the players’ entrance so that he definitely had the chance to come into contact with Mazraoui.

Speaking to the Mail on the moment the reporter said, “the United security staff outside the players’ entrance were kind enough to allow me to wait in front of the barriers after showing them my pass.”

“Mazraoui and I exchanged greetings in Arabic, wishing each other peace and blessings and Ramadan Mubarak.”

“I gave him the tin of dates telling him it was a gift from me, which he accepted and politely responded by saying ‘for you, my shirt’, giving me both of his match worn shirts.”

United plotting move for sensational 21-yo midfielder, ready to make £66.5m bid – report

Manchester United have set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado and are willing to spend big to sign him, as per reports.

With both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggling to cope with the Premier League’s physicality due to their ageing legs, Manuel Ugarte has emerged as Ruben Amorim’s most reliable defensive midfield option in recent months.

The Uruguayan star, signed from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, has earned plaudits for his out-of-possession work. Still, at the same time, Ugarte’s technical ability has come into question, with the 23-year-old showing nervousness with the ball at his feet at times.

Amid this, a report in Spain has suggested that United are looking at a Barcelona midfielder as his potential alternative.

Manchester United want Marc Casado

According to Fichajes, Casado has emerged as one of United’s “priorities” for the summer transfer window.

It is understood that the Spanish midfielder, who has made 22 LaLiga appearances under Hansi Flick this term, is admired by Amorim.

The 21-year-old is excellent at defensive work and is also very composed in possession and is regularly involved in the Blaugrana’s build-up.

The Spanish outlet claim United are willing to make a “significant financial effort to sign him” with a view to finding a new partner for Kobbie Mainoo and an “alternative to Manuel Ugarte.”

The Premier League giants’ initial offer for the Spaniard could reportedly be around €80 million (£66.5m), a figure that would test Barca’s resolve as at the moment the LaLiga leaders are not considering parting ways with their academy product.

However, Casado’s regular spot in Flick’s lineup could come into threat following Marc Bernal’s return to full fitness. Bernal was supposedly the undisputed starter before he suffered a long-term injury.

It is believed that United could take advantage of the situation and attempt to lure Casado to Old Trafford.

Having said that, we are a bit skeptical that Ineos would make such a massive offer for a relatively inexperienced player amid their attempts to fix the club’s financial issues.
