Skinner: Our midfielders are becoming instinctive

Marc Skinner gave an insight into Manchester United’s midfield partnership of Hinata Miyazawa and Julia Zigiotti Olme after Sunday’s WSL win over Liverpool.

It is a pairing that has underpinned United’s fine start to the season – 10 points from a possible 12 in the league – and was on display once more during the 2-0 victory in St Helens.

Miyazawa scored our stunning opener from just outside the box a few minutes in, while Skinner says Zigiotti Olme has brought an extra layer of quality to the squad following her summer arrival.

“It’s a beautiful goal, right?” Skinner said of Hini’s strike.

“It’s one of those goals you really want to watch technically. She hit one against Brighton last year from the edge of the area, but for her to run and strike on her weaker foot, even though I don’t think she has that much of a weaker foot. It’s just beautiful. I want her to watch that back because we want more goals from her.”

Discussing how Hini and Zigi are working together just a few weeks into their first season playing alongside each other, the boss said the team is striving for near telepathic understanding.

“The relationship, we have to get to a point with our midfielders where it becomes instinctive and right now it’s verging on that because they’re playing together, they’re understanding each other’s habits, how they want the ball, how they want to move and how they defend and cover,” Skinner said.

“That is where I want to move that relationship to…where it’s almost instinct and they play off each other, because technically then you can be so much more creative [as a team].”

IMPACT OF FRIDO, ZIGI AND JESS

Fridolina Rolfo started the game at left-back and, alongside fellow new arrivals Zigiotti Olme and Jess Park, has brought something extra this season.

“A little insight: Anna [Sandberg] was in the matchday squad and playing today and she’s pulled out this morning ill,” Skinner explained. “And I asked Frido to go in at left-back and she was instant, ‘yeah, I’ll do it’. And it’s the same Zigi going to right-back. That is the level of professionalism.

“They bring just a calmness and a quality of an artist that knows exactly what they’re doing and that for us gives us that balance. Jess gives us something different, just that creativity, the space finding. She doesn’t have to be rigid in one position, she can move across the field. It makes us more fluid. So those are the key insights into those players.”

Standout stats from Liverpool 0 United Women 2

Sunday 28 September 2025 15:04

Manchester United head home from St Helens with three more Barclays Women’s Super League points, after a 2-0 victory away to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

First-half goals from Hinata Miyazawa and Ella Toone were the difference in front of a crowd of just over 3,000 at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

A satisfying result lent itself to several favourable statistics at full-time, the majority provided by our friends at Opta, so we’ve rounded up for you below.

The list includes a record that Maya Le Tissier matched and details of a landmark goal that was scored…

STRONG SEASON STARTERS

United are now four games into the new Women’s Super League season and four games unbeaten, with the success in St Helens a return to winning ways after last weekend’s goalless draw with Arsenal.

It means Marc Skinner’s side have now started every season as far back as 2022/23 without a defeat in our opening four league matches of a campaign, establishing a stable foundation on a consistent basis in recent history.

The Reds have been able to extend that run to five outings in each of the prior three terms, and will hope to do the same for 2025/26, when we host Chelsea in our next league fixture on Friday.

HAPPIEST WHILE AHEAD

Skinner’s side are alongside champions Chelsea in being one of two teams yet to trail for a single minute through four weeks of this Women’s Super League season.

Miyazawa’s fourth-minute opener, and the domination that followed before Toone extended the advantage, meant little danger of a blot on the copybook this afternoon, with a third clean sheet of the league term ensuring those first-half strikes went unanswered.

United are now unbeaten in each of our last 24 WSL encounters in which we’ve taken the lead (won 21, drawn three), a run dating back to a 1-2 defeat at home to Liverpool in December 2023.

SKINNER’S SCORING LANDMARK

As Toone wheeled away to celebrate her advantage-extender in front of the travelling United fans just before the break, our no.7 had just scored the team’s 300th goal under the management of head coach Skinner.

The Reds have already netted 11 goals so far this WSL campaign, behind only Manchester City in that regard (12) at full-time in St Helens.

Toone’s tidy finish was her second of 2025/26 after she opened our league account against Leicester three weeks ago, while Miyazawa’s earlier opener was the third strike of her United career to date.

MAYA MATCHES A RECORD

Captain Maya Le Tissier’s availability has been quite incredible since she joined the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022.

The defender recently celebrated her 100th appearance for the Reds in our victory away to London City and brought up another milestone in this latest away encounter.

Our no.4 made her 70th consecutive start for United in the WSL, equalling a competition record for the joint-longest run of starts by an outfield player for one club. That was previously set at 70 by her former team-mate Aileen Wheelan for Brighton between September 2018 and January 2022.

DEFYING FIXTURE’S RECENT HISTORY

It was a successful first trip to the Totally Wicked Stadium, which became the home of Liverpool Women last season.

The corresponding contest being at Anfield in the previous term meant we had to wait until this afternoon’s September clash for a trip to St Helens, but it was worth the wait as United defied the recent run of results between the sides in this fixture to take all three points home.

Liverpool had won three of the last four league meetings between the teams, proving a tricky opponent particularly in 2023/24 when they did the double over us on the way to finishing fourth and a position ahead of Skinner’s side in the final table. United have now won two of the last three though, and can be pleased with our latest victory over the Merseysiders.

United Women put arch rivals to the sword in ruthless demolition that sends them soaring to the WSL summit

Manchester United Women travelled to the St Helen’s Stadium to take on great rivals Liverpool on an emotional afternoon after the death of Matt Beard.

First half

United got off to the perfect start when they took the lead after just four minutes.

A Jess Park cross was cleared and it fell to Hinata Miyazawa on the edge of the box.

The Japanese international made no mistake and rocketed the ball into the back of the net to give Marc Skinner’s side the lead.

Liverpool struggled to deal with United energetic pressing and Jayde Riviere fired a shot just wide of the post after 13 minutes.

United continued their positive start when Ella Toone’s whipped in cross almost bent inside the far post but drifted just wide.

Elisabeth Terland almost doubled United’s lead but her effort was fired right at the Liverpool keeper.

Despite United’s dominance, the hosts almost equalised. Ceri Holland’s excellent shot was wonderfully tipped over by Phallon Tullis-Joyce who added further to her growing reputation as one of the best keepers in Europe.

The Red Devils took full advantage of Tullis-Joyce’s save and scored their second two minutes into added time of the first half.

Terland laid the ball off in the box and Ella Toone coolly slotted in to put United in control of the match.

Second half

United began the second half in the same vein as the first and Toone fired a speculative attempt from 35 yards but she scuffed her shot wide.

Liverpool responded almost immediately and Cornelia Kapocs found herself one-on-one but luckily she fluffed her lines and missed the target to maintain United’s two goal lead.

The hosts continued to have possession but struggled to carve out many genuine chances to threaten United’s defence.

Late on, Terland was slipped in one-on-one but she failed to keep her cool and blasted right at the keeper.

The home side really should have scored shortly after as Mia Enderby was left in plenty of space in the box but her tame shot was easily claimed by the United keeper.

The visitors managed to hold on and kept another valuable clean sheet as the win took them temporarily at least to the top of the Women’s Super League.

The fixtures don’t get any easier for United as they welcome champions Chelsea to the Progress with United Stadium next Friday evening at 19:30 BST.

Manchester United enjoyed a convincing 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon, taking all three points home from St Helens following a dominant performance.

Marc Skinner made two changes from the side that drew with Arsenal a week ago, with Jayde Riviere returning from the minor injury that had ruled her out, and Elisabeth Terland also back in as Celin Bizet Donnum moved to the bench and Anna Sandberg was absent through illness.

A stunning early strike from Hinata Miyazawa set the tone, while Ella Toone doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time – scoring the 300th United goal under Skinner in the process.

One other thing to note from the afternoon is that Maya Le Tissier has now equalled the WSL record for consecutive starts, with this her 70th in a row. She could now break that on Friday night when Chelsea come to visit in Leigh.

United celebrated Hini’s early goal in St Helens.

FIRST HALF

Liverpool enjoyed a 5-0 win in the Women’s League Cup in midweek but were winless in the WSL coming into the game and United immediately put the hosts under pressure. There was an early warning from Terland when Liverpool failed to clear a ball into the box, but only four minutes were on the clock when Miyazawa spectacularly fired United ahead.

Jess Park’s ball across the box from the right flank eventually found Hini on the edge of the box, unleashing a first-time left-footed shot that had goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe rooted to the spot.

The chances continued to freely flow for United, pinning Liverpool firmly into their own half. An opportunity saw Terland lift the ball over the top after being played in by Park, while Jayde Riviere blasted one wide from a similar position to her recent goal against London City Lionesses.

After Liverpool were forced into a 21st-minute injury substitution, United dominance persisted and Miyazawa almost got her second of the game when another powerful left-footed shot cannoned off the post. Julia Zigiotti Olme was also ruing a missed header, while Borggrafe saved low from Terland.

With United dominating the ball since the opening kick-off, Phallon Tullis-Joyce had been little more than a spectator for the first 44 minutes. But the delicate nature of a 1-0 lead was highlighted when Ceri Holland’s shot was tipped onto the post by our no.91.

The response was a crucial second goal going into the break, sparked by Terland outmuscling former United defender Gemma Evans deep in Liverpool territory. She squared for Toone, who calmly finished from near the penalty spot in stoppage time before the interval.

Toone got on target just before the break.

SECOND HALF

Liverpool emerged from half-time with more spark and might have done better when the ball fell to Kirsty Maclean in the middle of the box, unable to make clean contact and missing the target. United then had Riviere to thank at the hour mark for putting Cornelia Kapocs, through on goal after a long punt forward from the home side, under just enough pressure so that the finish flew wide.

United sought to try and reclaim control of the game as the second half progressed, with Skinner opting for fresh legs from the bench in Bizet Donnum and Gabby George on either side of the back four, and Rolfo pushing further forward.

Le Tissier rallies the side on her 70th consecutive WSL start.

Playing her part in securing a sixth clean sheet in eight games across all competitions so far this season, Tullis-Joyce was called into action with just over 10 minutes to go, getting down low to save from Liverpool substitute Mia Enderby.

The final result takes an unbeaten United onto 10 points for the league campaign after four games.

“You just wonder”: United CL winner offers bizarre reason for Fernandes’ penalty failure in loss vs. Brentford

0

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has made a bizarre claim regarding why Bruno Fernandes missed from the spot against Brentford.

Fernandes’ penalty failure proves costly

United slumped to their third defeat of the 2025/26 Premier League season on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford found themselves 2-0 up inside 20 minutes as Igor Thiago capitalised on some pitiful defending to give the Bees a commanding advantage.

Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for the Red Devils before the half-hour mark, giving the visitors some hope of mounting a comeback. United had the opportunity to level the scores following a penalty decision against Nathan Collins for hauling down Bryan Mbeumo inside the area.

However, Fernandes’ effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. It marked his second penalty miss of the season, ending a streak of 18 successful spot-kicks. It was a costly miss as Mathias Jensen made it 3-1 in added time to secure the victory for his side.

Speaking to Premier League Productions after the final whistle, Hargreaves suggested that Fernandes may have missed the penalty because of being forced to play in a slightly deeper midfield role.

Hargreaves’ theory on Fernandes’ penalty blunder

The former United man remarked [as quoted by Metro], “If the goalkeeper just waits as Kelleher does it puts pressure on Bruno under pressure and he ends up just passing it.”

“That’s why I prefer the Harry Kane one where he whips it into the corner. If the goalkeeper waits it puts you under pressure to make a decision. Kelleher waits and reads it really well.”

“You just wonder for Bruno, is that because he is playing in that deeper midfield position? He’s not getting as many touches in the area where he can affect the game.”

Hargreaves insisted that Amorim should restore Fernandes to his more natural number 10 position, from where the playmaker can impact the game and make things happen.

“Defensively they have actually been pretty good up to this point but today they weren’t. The midfield is still an issue, Bruno has got to be a 10 again, he’s the best creator.”

“He has got to be a 10 again. Sesko scored which was the only positive for United today.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host newly-promoted Sunderland.

Report: Man United eye move for 48-year-old manager with a 24% win rate since January

Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for Graham Potter, who has just been sacked by West Ham United.

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United are considering a move for the 48-year-old. He was very poor during his time at West Ham, and it is highly unlikely that Manchester United will make a move for him.

They have been linked with Potter in the past. He was considered a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.

Graham Potter would be a shocking choice

As per the BBC, he had a 24% win rate as the West Ham United manager since joining the club in January 2025. It is clear that he is not the right fit for Manchester United, and they should look to aim higher.

Ruben Amorim has faced a lot of criticism in recent months, and it would not be a surprise if he is relieved of his duties soon. Manchester United finished in the bottom half of the league table last season, and they have picked up just two wins from six league matches this season. The results will need to change quickly if the Portuguese manager wants to hold onto his job.

He has been backed significantly in the transfer market, and it is time for him to deliver on the pitch.

Man United need an elite manager

If Manchester United decide to make a change, they should look to bring in an elite manager who has won major trophies at a big club. The expectations while managing a club like Manchester United are huge, and they need someone with considerable talent and experience.

It will be interesting to see if they can bring in a world-class candidate to replace the Portuguese manager. Amorim was highly rated across Europe before he joined Manchester United, but the move has clearly not worked out for either party. It would be ideal for them to part ways in the coming weeks.

Federico Valverde has been linked with a move to Manchester United over the last few days, and Real Madrid are now prepared to sanction his departure.

A report recently claimed that Manchester United want to sign the 27-year-old central midfielder from Real Madrid. Now, Fichajes are reporting that the Spanish club is prepared to sanction his departure. Manchester United would be willing to pay close to €100 million (£87m) for him.

Federico Valverde would be a superb signing

The 27-year-old has been exceptional for Real Madrid, and there is no doubt that he could improve Manchester United as well. It will be interesting to see if they can convince him to join the club. He will look to join an elite club where he will be able to fight for major trophies. The move to Manchester United might come across as a step down for him. They finished in the bottom half of the league table last season, and they have been quite poor this season.

Can Man United convince Valverde?

Manchester United can forget about signing a player of his quality if they do not secure Champions League qualification for the next season. If they do, however, manage to get the deal done, it would be an exceptional acquisition. He is one of the best midfielders in world football, and he has been previously described as “irreplaceable”.

It remains to be seen how the situation develops. Manchester United will look to get back to the top of English football once again, and they need elite players to do so. The South American would be an exceptional addition, and he could transform them.

Valverde is at the peak of his powers, and this could be the right time for him to take on a new challenge and move to the Premier League. He will look to establish himself as a key star in English football.

Report: Man United want to sign “top player”, Red Devils “have him on the radar” for 2026

Manchester United remain interested in signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton in 2026.

They were keen on securing his signature during the summer transfer window, but the Seagulls were not prepared to sanction his departure. According to Football Insider, Manchester United are keeping tabs on the player, and Baleba remains on their radar for the future.

They are likely to make a move for him at the end of the season instead of the January transfer window. It remains to be seen whether they can get the deal done.

Man United set to return for Carlos Baleba

Pete O’Rourke claims: “Carlos Baleba is a top player. Man United inquired about him in the summer, and Brighton’s price tag of around £100million scared United off.

“United still firmly have him on the radar probably for next summer rather than the January window.”

The 21-year-old has all the tools to develop into a complete central midfielder. Baleba could help Manchester United improve immensely. Baleba could prove to be an upgrade on most of their current midfield options. However, he will be an expensive acquisition, and he could cost in excess of £100 million.

Can Man United convince Baleba to join?

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United are prepared to break the Bank for him. They will need to convince the player to join the club as well. He will want to compete at the highest level and fight for trophies. Manchester United must look to secure European football so that they can convince elite talents.

The Premier League midfielder will not want to join a club in the bottom half of the league table. Manchester United have been quite disappointing so far, and they will need to bounce back strongly. It remains to be seen whether they can get their season back on track.

Signing the 21-year-old would be a huge coup for the club. He could develop into one of the best players in the league with the right guidance. Manchester United could nurture him into a future star.

Report: Man United want €12m-a-year “champion” in January, club ready to sell

Manchester United are interested in signing the Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic during the January transfer window.

The Serbian International has been linked with a move away from Italy in recent months, and Chelsea are keen on securing his signature as well. According to a report from Italian publication Gazzetta, Juventus are looking to get rid of the player so that they can reduce their wage bill. The Serbian earns €12 million per season.

Man United need Dusan Vlahovic

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United can secure an agreement to sign the player. They could use another quality striker, and Vlahovic could be the ideal acquisition. He has the physicality to thrive in the Premier League, and he could form a lethal partnership with Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian has not been able to hit the ground running in the Premier League, and he needs more support in the attack.

Vlahovic has proven himself in Italy over the years, and he has the quality to do well in England. The opportunity to move to the Premier League will be exciting for him. He has been described as a “champion” recently.

Where will Vlahovic end up?

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have the financial muscle to get the deal across the line, and his wages should not be a problem for them either. It will be interesting to see what the player decides. The two clubs are yet to follow up on their interest with an official proposal.

Chelsea have already invested in two quality strikers earlier this summer, and they might not be able to offer the Serbian regular gametime. The move to Manchester United might make a lot more sense for the player.

0 tackles, 1 chance created: United’s most trustworthy lieutenant was ‘abysmal’ today – but Amorim won’t drop him

0

Manchester United slumped to their third Premier League defeat of the campaign and 17th under Ruben Amorim this afternoon.

A 3-1 loss at the hands of Brentford has rounded off yet another dismal gameweek for the Red Devils.

They have consequently fallen to 13th in the table, but could end the weekend just above the relegation zone depending on how the clubs below them fare in their respective fixtures.

United waste chance to win back-to-back league games

No player covered themselves in glory at the Gtech Community Stadium. Benjamin Sesko did secure his first goal to halve the deficit in the 26th minute, but was unable to add to his tally, or even get any clear-cut chances, in the second half.

Bryan Mbeumo certainly did his utmost to clinch a victory upon his return to his former side, with his darting run into the Brentford box proving too dangerous for Nathan Collins, who resorted to pulling down his ex-teammate and conceding a spot-kick.

Unfortunately for Mbeumo, who boasts a prolific penalty conversion record, he could only watch on from the edge of the area as Bruno Fernandes’ tame attempt was comfortably saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. It’s now the second penalty the skipper has missed this campaign, prompting fans to question whether a change may be needed.

Even aside from the squandered opportunity to equalise, Fernandes was nowhere near his best today.

Bruno Fernandes records lousy statistics in Bees defeat

According to StatmanDave, the midfielder recorded a 76 per cent passing accuracy, created only one chance and had just the one shot on goal.

Additionally, he completed zero successful crosses, zero successful take-ons and zero tackles, making it no surprise the analyst labelled Fernandes as ‘abysmal’ at full-time.

Next up for the under-pressure Amorim is a home encounter against newly-promoted Sunderland next Saturday at 3pm, after which club action pauses for the October international break. Then, Anfield awaits.
