“If that’s lacking…”: United star explains why Brentford ran riot as pressure on Amorim reaches fever pitch

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has swung to the defence of head coach Ruben Amorim as pressure on him intensifies.

Amorim facing fight to keep his job

Amorim is under increased scrutiny following United’s latest disappointing result, a 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

United were second best in nearly every department, renewing scrutiny on Amorim, whose 33 games in charge have yielded only 34 points. There have been calls for him to adapt his approach to suit the players at his disposal but the Portuguese coach has made it very clear that he will not change.

While he retains the support of the hierarchy, there is an acceptance that Amorim must oversee an uptick in performances and results.

Already, there are rumours that United have kicked off plans to replace him, with Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate on the club’s list.

However, according to De Ligt, Amorim’s system isn’t the issue and the players also need to shoulder some of the responsibility for the club’s woes.

De Ligt defends Amorim

De Ligt said [as quoted by GOAL], “Of course, I mean it’s always easy to look to the manager, but in the end the players on the pitch have to do it.”

“We can’t say the goals we conceded, or the chances we conceded, are because of what… I don’t know, you guys always talk about the system. That also has a lot to do with focus, concentration, and, if that’s lacking in key moments, it’s going to make a difference.”

On United’s inconsistency, De Ligt remarked, “[We are] really disappointed because all week we were speaking about keeping the momentum going, getting another win under our belt.”

“If you lose this game, it’s a big blow, obviously. A lot of time it’s the same song, but we have to stick together — it’s the most important thing.”

“We lost against City, we won against Chelsea, so for the next game we have to analyse what went wrong in this game because a lot of things went wrong. We were short in key moments where we made the wrong decisions.”

“That makes a big difference in football. We were quite unlucky also with some chances, but overall, it was not good enough. That’s a fact.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they welcome newly-promoted Sunderland to Old Trafford.

“This is not acceptable”: Rooney pulls no punches as he delivers damning assessment of United under Amorim

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney pulled no punches as he laid into Ruben Amorim and the club following last weekend’s disappointing result against Brentford.

United’s struggles persist

United have endured a tough start to the season, only winning two of their opening six fixtures. Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Brentford was their third of the campaign, piling further misery on Ruben Amorim and his players.

The Red Devils were comprehensively beaten at the Gtech Community Stadium, where Keith Andrews’ side took full advantage of the visitors’ defensive frailties.

Despite the club’s insistence that Ruben Amorim retains their support and backing, pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach to overturn the situation. There have already been suggestions that United have begun their search for potential replacements.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, United’s record goalscorer tore into Amorim, admitting that he has no faith in him to make things right.

Rooney delivered a scathing verdict of the club’s current situation as he called on the owners to urgently intervene.

Rooney’s brutal assessment of United

Rooney said, “It’s just not good enough, from the managers, the coaches, the players. It’s not good enough.”

“I don’t know what’s going on. Ruben Amorim is my age, a bit younger, he’s still a young manager. I’m sure he has a great future. But what is going on at Man Utd? I don’t recognise the whole football club.”

“If you’re saying to me, ‘do you believe he will?’ [turn things round], then, after everything I’ve seen, honestly, I’ve got no faith in it.”

“I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character, I don’t see a desire to win, I don’t see ability, I don’t see match winners, nothing that gets me off my feet. I go to watch the team and think, ‘here we go again. We’re going to lose, or maybe nick a point. ‘ This is not Manchester United.”

The former England international continued, “I’m seeing players, they don’t deserve to wear the shirt, and it hurts. When you have played for the club and care about it, this is not acceptable what is going on.”

“I think there needs to be a clear message from the owners, whether that’s the Glazers, or that’s Ratcliffe, there needs to be a clear message on where the club is going, because at the minute, we’re all sitting here waiting for it to crumble.”

“It’s not even just results on the pitch. It’s everything about the club that needs fixing. We’re seeing staff members getting sacked after 20, 30 years who are very important people to that football club.”

“The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life. It needs something to kickstart that football club.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Academy Briefing: In-form U21s continue busy schedule

Monday 29 September 2025 16:00

The latest round-up on our world-famous Academy…

NEW DIRECTOR BEGINS WORK

Stephen Torpey has started work as Manchester United’s new Academy director.

Joining from Brentford, Stephen’s appointment as successor to Nick Cox was announced in August. Cox has joined Everton, where he’ll serve as technical director.

Torpey has recently led the rebuilding of Brentford’s youth structure, including the relaunch of a full Academy programme from Under-9s to Under-18s. Prior to his January 2024 arrival at the south-west London club, he had led Academy coaching across all groups at Manchester City, and at the Foundation phase, with Liverpool.

The UEFA A licence-holder outlined his pride at having the opportunity to lead United’s world-famous Academy.

“It is obviously a great time to be joining as the club enters an exciting new era,” he said last month. “I can’t wait to play my role in continuing the incredible tradition of youth development here.”

He began work at Carrington last Monday, and was present at the Under-21s’ exciting Premier League International Cup clash against Athletic Club at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Everyone at the club gives a warm welcome to Stephen and wishes him the best of luck in his new role.

UNDER-21s SECURE LATE WIN AGAINST ATHLETIC

A late Stretford End winner secured a 2-1 win for United in our opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League International Cup, against Athletic Club.

After Asier Hierro converted an 11th-minute free-kick for the visitors, the young Reds had to work hard to find openings against an organised Athletic side.

Substitute Gabriele Biancheri provided the inspiration, with a driving run down the right wing and a cut-back to James Scanlon, who provided a smart, first-time finish. Biancheri then netted an injury-time winner from Jack Fletcher’s cross, with the help of a deflection off the Athletic goalkeeper’s back, which may ensure it’s recorded as an own goal.

Travis Binnion’s United side will face Anderlecht (Leigh Sports Village) and Borussia Dortmund (Old Trafford) in December, before welcoming Sporting in January.

BINNION’S SIDE CONTINUES PL2 RECORD

On Saturday, Binnion’s team extended our 100 per cent record in Premier League 2 with a 4-1 win against Crystal Palace in Salford.

Jacob Devaney got things started as he opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, before Biancheri added a second shortly after the restart.

Asher Agbinone then pulled one back for the Eagles with a brilliant curling strike from range, but there was still time for more goals at the Peninsula Stadium.

Shea Lacey netted a brace from the bench, with his first a superb free-kick and his second a well-taken effort off the post that ensured a convincing victory.

UNDER-18s’ WINNING STREAK ENDS

Our Under-18s side fell to a first defeat of the season, following a second-half fightback by Manchester City at Carrington.

Gabriel’s well-taken strike and an immaculate Jim Thwaites free-kick had Darren Fletcher’s side in a comfortable position at the break.

But City halved the deficit at the beginning of the second period through Tyrone Samba, before quickfire efforts from Floyd Samba and Harrison Miles put the visitors into the lead.

The Reds’ misery was compounded late on, when goalkeeper Fred Heath was sent off for a challenge on Teddie Lamb outside the box, with Floyd Samba converting the resulting set-piece past Heath’s replacement Zac Watson.

JONES DISCUSSES ACADEMY EXPERIENCE

Ex-Red Phil Jones has described his experience coaching with United’s Academy as “brilliant” after he was around the club’s Under-18s group at times over the last two seasons.

“I was able to learn off the coaches in terms of how they set sessions up, what they’re going after in sessions and learn about the development programme with these kids so they transition from Academy to first team, and what that looks like when they get there, and having a succession plan for them.

“Really promising, really bright. I know there are a few lads who have been in and around and trained with the first team last season.

“Darren Fletcher’s there now, so I’m sure he’s got them all firing on all cylinders and getting the best out of them, so yeah, hopefully we’ll see some of them in the first team in the future.”

You can read more from Jones here.

LOAN WATCH

Several of our players out on loan continued to impress, with notable performances from Radek Vitek, who kept a third clean sheet in seven Championship games for Bristol City, and Ethan Ennis, who netted a second goal in five games for Fleetwood Town.

Full-backs Harry Amass and Habeeb Ogunneye both played a full 90 minutes, with the former doing well in a 1-1 draw for Sheffield Wednesday at home to QPR, and the latter unable to help his Newport County side overcome promotion-chasing Chesterfield in League Two.

Midfielder Dan Gore made his 11th appearance of this season at Rotherham United, for whom he has missed just one game since rejoining on loan in the summer.

Those are just some of the headlines from our loanees, all of whom continue to gain valuable experience away from the club, supported by staff back at Carrington, who are in regular contact and watch each game.

COMING UP THIS WEEK

Our Under-21s continue a busy schedule with a Tuesday evening trip to Lincoln City. While the game isn’t live on MUTV, it will be shown on SkySports+.

Tickets are available here.

We last faced the Imps in this competition in October 2019, when James Garner – now enjoying a successful Premier League career with Everton – netted the only goal of the game. Also in that side were others who have built excellent experience across European football, like Matej Kovar (PSV Eindhoven), Teden Mengi (Luton Town), Ethan Galbraith (Swansea City), Largie Ramazani (Valencia), Tahith Chong (Sheffield United), Dylan Levitt (Hibernian) and Anthony Elanga (Newcastle United).

Gareth Southgate to Man United takes sharp turn after speculation of a direct meeting with Ratcliffe – ESPN

A new update has been issued on the likelihood of Gareth Southgate succeeding Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, amid rumours that the former England boss has already met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Southgate on United’s list of potential Amorim replacements

Amorim is facing a tough battle to keep his job following United’s latest setback, a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Brentford last Saturday.

The loss was United’s third of the 2025/26 Premier League season and it left them in 14th place.

United have taken just 34 points from the 33 games Amorim has taken charge of since he was named head coach in November last year. He has yet to muster back-to-back wins in his 11 months at the helm.

Speculation is mounting that United are drawing up contingency plans in case they decide to part ways with Amorim. While he still retains the support of Ratcliffe and the football leadership group, there is an acceptance that results need to drastically improve if he is to keep his job.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United have drawn up a three-man shortlist of potential replacements, which includes Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Southgate. The report claimed that Ratcliffe had held meetings with Southgate in recent weeks.

However, according to ESPN, Ratcliffe and Southgate have not had contact.

Southgate to United update

ESPN’s Rob Dawson reveals, “United sources have insisted the club are not currently looking for replacements for Amorim and had denied speculation that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already met Gareth Southgate.”

“The former England boss was under consideration as a possible replacement for Erik ten Hag before Amorim’s appointment.”

It’s understood that United chiefs want to give Amorim as much time as possible to turn things around.

Ahead of United’s game with Sunderland this weekend, Amorim is preparing as normal, with the Portuguese coach given no indication that he may be sacked before then.

It’s been “business as usual” for Amorim.

Ruben Amorim’s necessary call on “dynamic” United star could be key to saving 20-yo’s Old Trafford future – opinion

The 2025–26 campaign was supposed to be Patrick Dorgu’s breakout season.

When he arrived at Manchester United during the winter transfer window, many billed him as the ideal left wing-back signing.

The Denmark international had impressed at Lecce in the first half of last season, recording 16 progressive carries leading to a shot, the highest among all defenders in Serie A during that period.

And while he was not an instant hit at United, he showed glimpses of brilliance.

By the end of last season across Europe’s top five leagues, Dorgu ranked as the under-21 defender with the highest progressive carries per 90 minutes (4.38).

Patrick Dorgu’s game by numbers vs. Real Sociedad:

100% successful take-ons
100% tackles won
100% aerial duels won
75% ground duels won
9 touches in the opposition’s box
6 fouls won
5 shots
2 clearances
1 penalty won

Brings balance and quality. ⚖️ pic.twitter.com/gdcfShvuff

— Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) March 13, 2025

While some may point out that those carries did not translate into goals or assists, there is an argument that had United’s attackers been on his wavelength and reacted to his crosses, he might have racked up a healthy number of assists.

Summer 2024: signs of promise

Dorgu caught the eye during United’s US pre-season tour, with his performance against AFC Bournemouth in the 4–1 Premier League Summer Series win being the standout, earning him a 9/10 rating from The Peoples Person.

Out in the summer ’25 tour, the winter signing was ticking every box, with some tipping him for a breakout season.

With United’s attack revamped, a more compatible left-sided partner in Matheus Cunha, a strong pre-season behind him, and those teasing crosses he kept whipping into the box last term, the stage looked set for Dorgu to flourish in the 2025–26 season.

But it has not happened. Dorgu has looked bang average.

A poor start

In matches, he consistently receives balls in strategic areas, much like Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes do for PSG, after making clever runs between the lines and finding space to attack.

Yet the Dane has fumbled his chances, failing to influence United’s attacking play as Amorim demands from his wing-backs. His final ball has let him down.

He should be improving, but unfortunately, he has not.

Despite being one of Amorim’s default starters, the Portuguese manager cannot afford to overlook the left wing-back’s struggles. He must act and act now.

It is time to take Dorgu out of the firing line and reduce his role.

Shaw the Solution

Luke Shaw, solid as he has been at left-sided centre-back, could offer far more at wing-back.

He remains one of the few Red Devils who can pick a pass, and few in the squad can rival his delivery.

Shaw himself is pushing for the left wing-back role. Speaking to Sky Sports recently, he said:

“Currently, I’m playing left centre-back and I’m content, but I still see myself more of a wing-back. The manager knows this, but he’s the one who decides. I’m happy to play anywhere.”

Shaw could bring stability to the left wing, adding the threat United have lacked at wing-back, while also not being a liability at centre-back.

Dorgu still has time

Dorgu, for his part, still has work to do. He must sharpen his finishing, refine his crossing, and polish his technique.

With more graft on the training ground and cameo appearances to rebuild his confidence, he could rediscover his spark.

Still young, the Dane may be enduring a rough patch, but his talent is undeniable.

The dynamic prospect

Breaking The Lines’ analysis of his style, around the time of his headline Old Trafford switch, remains a compelling defence of his abilities.

BTL described him as:

“A dynamic left back who loves to carry the ball up the pitch, cut inside and combine with forwards, and who has the agility to manoeuvre his way through tight spaces. Dorgu’s dribbling ability is top-drawer, and it could very well see him operate as a wing-back or even as a winger in the near future.”

For sure, if Dorgu reaches his ceiling, he could be the real deal.

But for now, Amorim must shield him from scrutiny, let Shaw steady the ship, and give Dorgu the space to reinvent himself rather than risk an unceremonious exit like Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Ironically, just as Kobbie Mainoo is said to be learning the No.8 role from Bruno Fernandes, Dorgu could do worse than learn from Shaw.

Since Dan was introduced to Manchester United in 2008, he has lived and breathed the club. What started as being a fan evolved into writing about United, allowing him to feel part of their journey. Hopefully, his work might even help rekindle your love for the kings of Manchester.

INEOS’ key target to replace Amorim pours fuel on the fire as he reveals he “follows” the situation at United

Manchester United remain linked with multiple managerial candidates following their prolonged struggles under Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese head coach was a huge hit with Sporting and arrived at Old Trafford in November last year to replace Erik ten Hag.

INEOS were looking to steer the Red Devils back to their glory days and zeroed in on Amorim as the right man for the job.

Nearly eleven months later, the Premier League giants find themselves in troubled waters once again. The Portuguese has won just 18 of his 49 games in charge, losing 19 more.

After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, the club are now 14th in the league table after six games in the 2024/25 campaign, with two wins and three defeats so far.

Amorim under pressure at Old Trafford

Amorim is feeling the heat at Old Trafford after investing heavily in the squad over the summer. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon were all signed to improve the squad, but results have failed to improve so far.

A lot of questions have been raised about the Portuguese’s tactics, with fans yet to be convinced by his 3-4-3 system. Some of Amorim’s decisions have drawn controversy as well, including his inability to include Kobbie Mainoo in the starting XI.

Recent reports have suggested that United are keeping their options open and have already identified potential replacements, including Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

The Austrian has done a tremendous job since taking charge at Selhurst Park in 2024. Glasner helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last season and also won the Community Shield this campaign.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt manager is in the final year of his contract, further adding to speculation regarding his future. Glasner has now responded to rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford to take Amorim’s place.

Glasner refuses to dismiss United links

Glasner recently sat down with the Austrian Edition of Kicker for a chat, where he was asked: “There are a lot of rumours circulating about you again. From Manchester United in the short term to all sorts of top clubs after 2026. Are these reports annoying or amusing you, and can you reveal when you and Palace plan to discuss your future again?”

The former Eintracht Frankfurt manager remained coy on the matter, responding: “I follow all the rumours – and that’s all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed. Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”

Glasner has won 33 of his 71 games in charge of Crystal Palace so far, registering a 46.48% win ratio. The Eagles are currently on an 18-game unbeaten run, and are third in the Premier League table. They are also the only team in the league yet to lose a game this season and defeated reigning champions Liverpool by a 2-1 scoreline over the weekend.

Interestingly, the Austrian also deploys a 3-4-3 system at Selhurst Park, but is more flexible in his approach compared to Amorim.

“How is he still in the job?” Premier League legends urge United to sack Amorim following dismal Brentford defeat

Pressure on Manchester United to dismiss Ruben Amorim as manager continues to mount.

On Saturday, Man United suffered a 3-1 loss to Brentford, sending them down to 14th place in the Premier League standings.

As a result of this disappointing loss, Amorim has now lost the majority of his Premier League games at United, also recording the club’s worst win percentage since before the Second World War.

Understandably, criticism has been flying in Amorim’s direction consistently since this most recent defeat.

The United faithful voice their concerns

United legend Gary Neville let rip against Amorim following the Brentford game, saying that the team’s performance was “unforgivable.”

“He changes his back three and his back five every single game, and the performances and results are just unacceptable. I’m really, really worried,” Neville explained.

Another club legend and teammate of Neville, Rio Ferdinand, agreed with this sentiment, admitting that he would have hated to play in a team that is always being shifted around like this.

Still, it’s not just former United stars who have taken some big swipes at the struggling United boss.

Calling for Amorim’s head

Premier League legends Alan Shearer and Martin Keown have been enraged by Amorim’s poor form.

“Ruben Amorim is under massive pressure,” Alan Shearer stated, as quoted by TEAMtalk.
“I think the hierarchy have made so many errors since coming to the club, they can’t be seen to have made another in appointing this manager. I think he is very fortunate.”

Keown chimed in with his own brutal assessment: “They don’t look good enough. You then look at it, and he only has a win percentage 1% more than Graham Potter, who has been sacked. How is he still in the job?”

The former Arsenal man then claimed, “If he was 12 months after Ferguson, this would have been done weeks ago.”

In fact, former Everton player Ashley Williams also voiced his desire for Amorim to get the sack.

“I don’t want to say they change manager, but how long can this continue? It seems to be every week that we’re talking about it,” Williams noted. “I’m a fan of managers who have a style and stick to it. That isn’t working. You have to adapt. I don’t see where Manchester United go with this unless they change manager.”

With no signs of improvement beginning to show after almost a year in charge, it seems that Amorim may not have what it takes to turn United’s fortunes around.

Perhaps INEOS would do well to begin the search for a replacement before life at Old Trafford deteriorates further.

It’s simple – were these United goal scored by someone who began the game or a sub?

Transfer expert names PL clubs United beat in race for Orozco, gives thrilling update on pursuit for prodigy’s team mate

Manchester United’s scouting network has been hard at work over the past year and has been particularly active in South America.

In January a deal was announced for promising Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who finally joined up with the club in July.

And the Red Devils are on the verge of tying down another young talent from that continent, with 17-year-old Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco seemingly set for an Old Trafford move.

Fresh Orozco details

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, United won a fierce race for the player, with Premier League rivals Manchester City, Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion also in the running.

There was also strong interest from Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig but United were, for once, decisive in the market.

Bailey said: “United are working hard in the Americas and Africa at the moment, they really are the places you can pick up some amazing young talent at source.

“Look at Orozco. United have done that before his likely appearance in the World Cup in Qatar later this year, but they have got him for less than £1 million.

“That is nothing for any English club and he could be a superstar, and even if not – they are probably not going to lose money on the deal.

“This is an area that INEOS and Jason Wilcox are paying real close attention to at the moment.”

Kevin Angulo interest

According to Bailey, United’s scouts are not finished in Columbia where Orozco’s international teammate is now under consideration.

The Red Devils reportedly hold an interest in 17-year-old striker Kevin Angulo, who made his debut for America de Cali last year.

Angulo scored for Columbia U17s in a friendly earlier this year and provided an assist in their 5-1 win over Venezuela in the U17 South American Championship semi-final.

The youngster’s current team have the nickname Los Diablos Rojas, which translates to the Red Devils.

Manchester United Women host champions Chelsea in our next Barclays WSL game.

The Friday night meeting, to be held at the newly renamed Progress with Unity Stadium, is our second of four games to be held over a two-week period, with the packed schedule coming courtesy of our involvement in the UEFA Champions League.

It follows a Sunday lunchtime trip to face Liverpool in the WSL, which saw us bank a 2-0 win against the Merseysiders, stretching our unbeaten run to four games at the beginning of this WSL campaign.

Here’s everything you need to know about our upcoming fixture against the Blues…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

The 19:30 BST kick-off is set to be broadcast live on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.

You can also follow the action live in the United App and on ManUtd.com, including team news, in-game updates, a match report and exclusive post-match interviews.

There is still a chance to watch in-person with tickets available here – secure your seat now!

PAST MEETINGS

We faced Chelsea three times last season, and it’s safe to say they proved to be tough opposition in their unbeaten WSL campaign last term.

They secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Reds at Kingsmeadow courtesy of a Guro Reiten penalty, and repeated the same scoreline in the reverse fixture on our home turf, this time Lucy Bronze proving the decisive goalscorer.

Marc Skinner’s side also faced Sonia Bompastor’s charges at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup final, where a Sandy Baltimore brace and a Catarina Macario header sealed the silverware for our opponents.

United will, therefore, be seeking retribution.

Skinner: We were electric first half Video

Marc Skinner shares his assessment of the victory in St Helens, featuring an “electric” first half from his team…

FORM GUIDE

Skinner has overseen an incredible start to this WSL season, with three wins, against Leicester City, London City Lionesses and Liverpool, and a goalless draw with Arsenal leaving us unbeaten heading into this clash.

The only side in the entire league currently holding a better record than the Reds is Friday night’s opponent, Chelsea, who have won all of their first four fixtures and haven’t lost in the top-flight since May 2024.

Both outfits will be looking to blemish the other’s impressive start, and while a draw could leave both intact, neither is likely to settle for a point.

Given we held the eventual champions to two narrow scorelines in the league last season, history suggests this one has the potential to go either way, and will be a hard-fought contest no matter the end result.

OTHER WSL ACTION

There’s a full slate of league action elsewhere across England over the weekend. Here are all the fixtures:

FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER

UNITED v Chelsea (19:30 BST)

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER

Manchester City v Arsenal (12:00 BST)

SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER
