Blockbuster update: United’s priority summer target sends clear message on his future, fans will be buzzing – report

What Ruben Amorim and Manchester United need most right now is an elite striker who can finish off chances, unlike what Rasmus Hojlund has managed all season.

The Dane has not only failed to find the back of net consistently, his hold-up play and passing have also left a lot to be desired which is why the head coach wants him gone in the summer.

Whether the Red Devils manage to find a buyer for him is a whole different ball game altogether. But finding a replacement will not be easy given the club’s current predicament.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League and ruthless finishers like Viktor Gyokeres want to play in the Champions League, something the Old Trafford side might not be able to offer.

Osimhen open to moving to United

Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, is another top target but there were doubts as to whether he would accept the possibility of no European football next season while his wage demands are also quite significant.

TBR Football have great news on that front. Journalist Graeme Bailey has suggested that the Nigerian superstar has no qualms about moving to Manchester even if there is no Champions League football on offer.

“Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are just some of the clubs keen on Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen.

“Man United have been informed that Osimhen would be willing to move to Old Trafford, without Champions League football.”

The 20-time English league champions are still alive in the Europa League and there is every chance they could go on and win it in Bilbao. The report, however, does not mention the wage factor at all.

There is significant interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle while Saudi Pro League sides are also ready to pay over the odds to land the 26-year-old.

But the Napoli star has no interest in the riches of the Middle East and is focussed on moving to a club in the English top-flight with the Serie A side hoping to earn £65 million from his sale.

Not looking at Saudi move

His agents have been instructed to try and find an early resolution this time around after Osimhen had to scramble to find a club after his move to Stamford Bridge broke down last summer.

“The Pro League, led by former Chelsea chief Michael Emenalo, are planning a major transfer drive this summer and are targeting some of the Europe’s top talent.

“The likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Osimhen are all in their sights. However, whilst Salah and Nunez are seemingly open to the prospect of moving to the Middle East – sources have told TBR Football that Osimhen is not looking at the prospect at this point.”

Galatasaray also want him but whether they can afford him remains to be seen. The player will reportedly relay his decision on his future to his current loan club in April. Hopefully, INEOS can get this deal done given Amorim’s urgent requirement.

Manchester United to shatter world transfer record in stunning plan if they ‘choose’ to make £310m

Manchester United have never made more than £100m on player sales in a single season but will break the world record for transfer income this summer.

I SPY
Mediawatch does not intend to spend a great deal of time on this story. We would much prefer to ignore Harry Redknapp being Harry Redknapp. But when the MailOnline is the MailOnline about Harry Redknapp being Harry Redknapp we do not have a choice.

‘Harry Redknapp filmed making crude joke about England boss Thomas Tuchel being ‘a German SPY’ who has been ‘sent over to f*** us up”

You sure you’re happy with the word you’ve chosen to capitalise there, guys? Absolutely positive? Or have we finally got over the fact Tuchel is GERMAN?

‘The decision to appoint the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss met with a mixed response due to his nationality, despite his proven record of winning silverware at club level.’

Indeed it was. You might say it was A DARK DAY FOR ENGLAND. You only might say that if you are absurdly childish, but still. You might.

‘He did however make a comfortable, winning start to his tenure last week, with a 2-0 win over Albania and a 3-0 victory against Latvia to kickstart the Tuchel era.’

Tuchel’s start was so ‘comfortable’ that one prominent Mail journalist was left wondering how long he had to wait before being able to dig out the players again for being rubbish. It was so very comfortable.

Close contact
This is the last bit on Redknapp, promise. But Mediawatch just wanted to highlight Jacob Steinberg’s closing paragraph in his exclusive story for The Guardian:

‘The Guardian has attempted to contact Redknapp for a response.’

Hopefully not via fax, email or text.

Desperate times call for desperate transfers
The only problem with moving on is that there is little to move on to on an international break Friday ahead of an FA Cup weekend in which none of the clickiest clubs feature.

But while Manchester United exist, so will daft stories like this from the Daily Mirror website:

‘Man Utd desperately bid to raise £310m this summer by selling eight players’

Can you ‘desperately’ generate £310m through player sales? No club has ever generated as much through player sales in a single transfer window in the history of the sport, ‘desperately’ or otherwise. It isn’t something a team just does.

The term itself and indeed the reality of Manchester United’s specific situation suggests they are not in a position of particular negotiating strength.

But let’s have it. How will famously atrocious selling club Manchester United, 13th in the Premier League table, whose biggest entire season in terms of sales was 2009/10 when they happened to possess the best player in world football to help them make about £100m, and who have made just over £300m through player sales in 15 transfer windows since January 2018, generate £310m through player sales in summer 2025 alone?

It’s a very easy start: Marcus Rashford. They’ll probably find a buyer if not Aston Villa themselves. That’s £40m ticked off. £270m and seven players to go.

Next is Antony and an immediate stumbling block. Manchester United could indeed ‘choose to sell him permanently for a fee of around £40m,’ but someone would have to ‘choose’ to sign him for as much. And as relatively decent as he has been at Real Betis, that really is rather a lot of money to chuck around, especially when he’s not really been linked with anyone.

Jadon Sancho and £25m you can have, even if transfer-obsessed Chelsea seem to be contemplating spending money specifically not to sign players now.

That still leaves five players and £105m to account for if we are being incredibly generous and assuming Antony can be shuffled out of the door for £40m. Which he can’t, but still.

Kobbie Mainoo. That’s a bit better. Again, Manchester United ‘could choose to sell’ but any deal would depend on another club also choosing to spend £70m, which feels less likely than it did a few months ago.

Andre Onana. £40m. How? Where from? Doesn’t matter. Shut up. Bank it.

Alejandro Garnacho. £60m. Maybe? It’s more likely than Antony for £40m, certainly. But still quite improbable in the grand scheme of things. Manchester United simply putting valuations on players doesn’t mean they will automatically be met; they cannot just this player is worth this much and then count it towards their PSR.

But look, we’ve come this far. We have six players being sold for £275m to incredibly generous buyers, and can envisage absolutely no problems in Manchester United, also notoriously excellent at signing players as they are, reinvesting that money on a new starting keeper, central midfielder and wide forward at the absolute bare minimum before strengthening the rest of the squad.

There is still £35m to account for across two players in what remains of this butchered squad. What are we missing?

‘United could earn a decent cash injection from selling two of their older stars. Casemiro and Harry Maguire…’

Nope. If Manchester United are able to sell Casemiro for £25m to a real actual football club that exists in 2025 then Mediawatch will transfer the other £285m to Sir Jim personally.

Just give me a reason
Mediawatch understands where Liverpool fan Andy Dunn is coming from when he explains in the Daily Mirror that ‘there is little room for logic, common sense or reason’ when it comes to the wider reaction at Trent Alexander-Arnold’s expected departure.

But this is a wonderful paragraph:

‘Of course, the lifestyle and the challenge in the Spanish capital is very alluring. He will be playing alongside brilliant team-mates in a great stadium and great city. But, essentially, Alexander-Arnold – if the move is confirmed – will be saying he would rather, for whatever the reasons, be playing for Real Madrid than for Liverpool.’

Yes. Yes he would. That is indeed the essence of a transfer. And ‘whatever the reasons’ is brilliant: how about a) the fact he has won every possible trophy at Liverpool, and b) it’s Real sodding Madrid?

Public property No.1
In the middle of an otherwise excellent piece by Dominic King in the Daily Mail comes this paragraph:

‘Liverpool is a city with its own views on how things should be done, especially so when it comes to football. If you are a local boy who gets to do what the millions dreamed of doing, you become public property. There simply wouldn’t be the same level of hysteria anywhere else in the country.’

This Means More. Every other club pats their best academy graduates on the back and wishes them all the best when they leave for free.

Pressure, pushing down on me
There is sympathy for the headline writer tasked with making John Cross’s latest piece on Arsenal more appealing.

Cross has essentially just noticed Arsenal play two Premier League games before Liverpool next play one. Why he has felt compelled to point this out ahead of a weekend in which neither play is unknown, and the pretence that this is the ‘last chance’ for the Gunners in the league collapses almost immediately.

‘Arsenal have one more chance to pressure Liverpool in title race – they can’t waste it’ is the chosen headline but by the second paragraph Arsenal’s Premier League aim is reduced to them needing to ‘apply some pressure on Liverpool at the top’, and by the fifth they must ‘at least make the Premier League table look respectable even if they cannot close the gap’.

‘It is hard to imagine that Arsenal could win all their games between now and the rest of the season and even harder to think that Liverpool – having lost one Premier League game all season – could suddenly lose four.’

Well, yes. It’s almost like the title race is over and the media steadfastly refuses to acknowledge that.

‘But equally, Arsenal have to apply some pressure because losing the title by double figures would have to go down as a major disappointment for Gunners boss Arteta.’

‘Not losing the title by double figures’ sounds exactly like Arsenal’s dream, best-case scenario actually.

Amorim slams the brakes on United’s chase for Europe’s most coveted gunman, he’s not sold on him – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly hesitant about sanctioning a summer deal for Lille striker Jonathan David, despite his impending free-agent status.

United are expected to dip into the market for striker reinforcements and David has been mentioned to be on the club’s radar.

David is enjoying another prolific season with Lille and currently has 14 top-flight goals to his name. He has managed an impressive 23 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

The Canadian international has netted 85 goals in 170 Ligue 1 appearances. While his aerial ability is somewhat average, he boasts key qualities of a top-class number nine, including clinical finishing, excellent hold-up play, and strong passing skills.

He has made it clear that he has no plans to extend his contract at Lille, making him available on a free transfer this summer—an opportunity that has attracted interest from several top European clubs in need of a striker.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are in “concrete talks” to lure David to Old Trafford. The Red Devils are not the only outfit chasing him, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also keen.

Now, Pete Hall of The i Paper has revealed that Newcastle, faced with the prospect of losing Alexander Isak, are eyeing David.

However, Hall reports that despite inquiring about the 25-year-old, Amorim remains unconvinced. West Ham, Chelsea, and Liverpool are also interested in signing him.

The i Paper explains about David, “While six Premier League clubs are interested, it is understood none are at an advanced stage in their discussions, with no offers on the table as yet.”

“Despite making enquiries, it is unlikely David will move to Manchester United, with the versatile forward not the kind of profile Ruben Amorim is seeking.”

“The same can be said for Liverpool, with their preferred pick a more out-and-out number nine – Alexander Isak is thought to be their top target to fulfil that need.”

There remains a chance that David will move abroad. He previously declared his love for Spanish football, and a switch to Barcelona has been mooted.

Other options on the table are Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Video: Sekou Koné scores scorching volley for u21s, he’s knocking on the first team door

Manchester United u21s returned from the international break with an away trip to Leeds United.

On a windy day at the Leeds training ground, Manchester United were on the front foot from the off. This was despite them fielding a very young side, due to many academy players being with the first team for training.

Just five minutes in, Jack Moorhouse pressed high to win possession but was denied by a big save after receiving the return pass from James Overy.

Amir Ibragimov hit the back of the net in the eighth minute but the celebrations were short-lived, with the ref’s whistle blowing for offside. Sam Mather’s corner was headed off the crossbar initially by Victor Musa before Ibragimov converted.

Against the run of play, Leeds took the lead just before the half hour mark. An incredible long range strike from Alfie Cresswell was aided by the wind into the top left corner, giving Cameron Byrne-Hughes no chance.

Three minutes later, Leeds doubled their lead when they worked it down the right wing and cut back to Harry Gray for a close range finish.

It suddenly seemed everything was going against United when Leeds’ corner flew directly into the goal by the wind but fortunately the referee blew for a foul to save United’s blushes.

Into the second half, United looked to turn it around, pinning Leeds into their box early on.

Two chances came to Mather but he couldn’t keep his shot on target before having another effort blocked.

Ultimately it was Sekou Kone who ventured forward from his defensive midfield role to pull one back.

Mather’s corner delivery could only be cleared to Kone, lurking at the edge of the box, who did well to adjust his feet before volleying into the roof of the net with his left foot.

Two minutes later, Kone made the difference again when he got forward to receive the ball in the box but was bundled over as he collected the ball to earn a penalty.

Having returned to United to get some match time from his loan at Tranmere Rovers, Mather stepped up and slotted low from the spot to draw it level at 2-2,

United pushed until the final moments but couldn’t get it over the line as the Leeds defenders scrambled on the line to get it away before Jayden Ngwashi lashed it over the bar.

Settling for one point, United move into sixth place in the league, well within the playoff spots.

Premier League striker ‘sat in the jacuzzi’ heartbroken as United rejected him on deadline day

Former Manchester United academy graduate Joshua King has revealed the emotional turmoil he experienced after a potential return to Old Trafford fell through in January 2020.

At the time, United were in desperate need of a striker.

King, then at Bournemouth, had emerged as a strong candidate after an impressive season in which he scored 12 Premier League goals and registered three assists.

The Norwegian forward had become a reliable top-flight performer, and with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm, a reunion with his former club seemed within reach. However, negotiations ultimately hit a wall, leaving King devastated.

Speaking on NRK’s Bakrommet podcast, the now 33-year-old admitted the transfer saga was a major personal blow. “The dream was to play for United,” King said, as relayed by VG.

“Now United are struggling with a striker. They have a Norwegian coach who is interested. Put an offer on the table, and I came there for free. And then you say no to £25m.”

He added that then-manager Eddie Howe had expressed a willingness to let him go, but Bournemouth’s valuation proved to be the stumbling block. “He said: Joshua, I won’t stand in your way, but the club wants x number of millions.”

Instead of King, United completed a surprise deadline-day loan move for former Watford striker Odion Ighalo, a decision that left the Bournemouth man reeling.

“I just sat in the jacuzzi for two or three hours waiting for the phone,” he recalled. “I called Jim [Solbakken, his agent], who was working on that deal. And then I remember reading ‘Ighalo ready for United’. Then I was completely devastated. Then I was way down.”

King also stated that to this day, he does not know whether the collapse of the move came from Howe or the club’s board, but the experience convinced him it was time for a change.

“That was part of the reason why I wanted to leave Bournemouth and try a new chapter,” he explained.

Although the United transfer never materialised, King did eventually move on from the South Coast club in early 2021.

Since then, he has had spells at Everton, Watford and Turkish giants Fenerbahce. He currently plays in Ligue 1 with Toulouse.

The story adds to the growing list of near-misses and alternate timelines that surround United’s transfer history in recent years.

For King, it was a missed opportunity to fulfil a childhood dream. For United, it was a sliding-doors moment that could have rewritten part of their attacking blueprint under Solskjaer.

Ruben Amorim is due to speak to the media ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League assignment at Nottingham Forest.

The extended break has given the Reds chance to take stock ahead of the final two months of a difficult campaign, with the team still competing to win the Europa League after setting up a two-legged quarter-final with Lyon.

The boss will be appreciating that, after signing off before the internationals with a comprehensive 3-0 away win to Leicester City, there is the opportunity to build on that performance when the games start coming thick and fast again.

First up is a tough test at Forest, who are currently third in the table, with designs on playing Champions League football next term.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men won 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford so United will be out to avenge that defeat and continue in a positive frame of mind heading into the weekend’s Manchester derby.

Ruben is due to field questions from the press and speak to official club media at Carrington on Monday lunchtime.

Our head coach will probably provide an update on the latest team news ahead of Tuesday’s clash and look ahead to the busy spell that follows this extended period of inactivity.

Stay across our official channels for all the news as it breaks.

Manchester United roared back from a two-goal deficit at the break to earn a 2-2 draw against Leeds United in Premier League 2.

Travis Binnion’s starting XI handed three debuts at Under-21s level – Cameron Byrne-Hughes, Albert Mills and James Overy. Sekou Kone notched his first goal for the club before being fouled inside the box, allowing Sam Mather to level things up from the spot.

Leeds survived a couple of late goalmouth scares as both sides took a point at Thorp Arch, in the live MUTV encounter.

U21s highlights | See the main action from Friday’s four-goal encounter with Leeds United…

The Reds started promisingly, with Rory Mahady called into action to produce a sprawling save to deny Jack Moorhouse, after some next footwork to latch onto a James Overy pass. Moorhouse’s driving runs were a feature of the opening exchanges and United had the ball in the net in the ninth minute.

Mather’s corner was headed against the bar by Victor Musa and, although Amir Ibragimov pounced to net the rebound, he was ruled offside.

In the 28th minute, the hosts scored out of nothing when James Debayo fired a ball out to Connor Douglas and his pass back to Alfie Cresswell led to the home skipper hoisting it into the danger area. Catching on the wind, it swirled against the underside of the bar and into Byrne-Hughes’s net.

Four minutes later, an excellent move led to Harry Gray, younger brother of Tottenham Hotspur’s Archie, stealing in to produce a slick finish. It was the striker’s last involvement of the afternoon, due to injury, but his side thought they had a third when Rhys Chadwick’s corner was blown straight in. However, a foul was called on Byrne-Hughes during the scrimmaging inside the six-yard box.

With the wind now providing assistance to the Reds, the second half was largely all United. Mather shot over from distance before he and Moorhouse were crowded out before getting their efforts away. Although Byrne-Hughes had to deny Sam Chambers, the visitors continued to carry most of the threat.

Mather’s exquisite touch to a long ball by Mills put him through on goal but he hit a post with his finish, when confronted by keeper Mahady. Musa headed over and saw an attempt blocked by the Leeds trialist before a goal finally arrived in the 67th minute.

After a number of corners, one was only half cleared to Kone, who produced a textbook left-volley flew that flew past Mahady. It provided a real shot of adrenaline to United with Moorhouse soon testing Mahady again, and Mather firing narrowly off target from the rebound. Then Kone played a one-two with Musa, only to be flattened by Diogo Monteiro inside the area. It was a clear penalty and Mather calmly struck it down the middle, after a little delay, to level the scores at 2-2.

While Leeds did spark back into life, it was United who looked likeliest to grab a winner. Ibragimov picked up a James Bailey pass and his devilish cross was inches away from Musa and Jayden Ngwashi, sliding in at the far post. There was still time for another Ibragimov cross to eventually lead to Zach Baumann having a shot cleared off the line by Cresswell, with Ngwashi unable to convert the loose ball.

So a point apiece was the outcome in difficult conditions after a decent game across the Pennines.

United celebrate as the second-half display earns a point.

Man Utd: ‘Completely devastated’ striker reveals agony over transfer collapse after £25m bid

Former Bournemouth forward Josh King has opened up about his failed move to Premier League giants Man Utd in the 2020 January transfer window.

King’s most prolific season in the Premier League saw him score 16 league goals in the 2016/17 campaign with the Norway international attracting admirers.

The season before Man Utd showed interest King bagged 12 goals in 35 Premier League appearances with the Red Devils attempting to sign him in the next winter transfer window.

It came as a shock to most onlookers with King not having his best season in the 2019/20 campaign and Man Utd eventually opted to sign Odion Ighalo instead after having a £25m bid rejected.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reported at the time that King felt ‘used and messed about’ by Man Utd:

‘Conversations between the clubs led to United submitting two offers on Thursday, the second worth £25 million, and The Athletic understands this encouraged King to think a deal would be struck.

‘The following morning, the 28-year-old was ready to travel north and keen on the idea of rejoining United, who he signed for aged 16 but left in 2013 without making a first-team appearance in the Premier League.

‘Bournemouth and King spent Friday anticipating the Old Trafford side would return to the negotiating table but it never happened and the Norwegian was left disappointed.

‘His frustration is thought to have been directed at United for not following through with their advances rather then Bournemouth for rejecting them, the prevailing feeling being that he was used and messed about as the 20-time English champions ended up signing Odion Ighalo.’

Speaking on the NRK’s Bakrommet podcast, King has now revealed his side of the story with a move to Man Utd a “dream” for the Norwegian, who now plays in France for Toulouse.

King said: “The dream was to play for United. Now United are struggling with a striker. They have a Norwegian coach who is interested. Put an offer on the table, and I came there for free. And then you say no to £25m.

“He (Eddie Howe) said: Joshua, I won’t stand in your way, but the club wants x number of millions.”

On his reaction to Man Utd signing Ighalo instead, King added: “I just sat in the jacuzzi for two or three hours waiting for the phone. I called Jim [Solbakken, his agent], who was working on that deal. And then I remember reading ‘Ighalo ready for United’. Then I was completely devastated. Then I was way down.”

King insists he’s still not completely sure why the move didn’t go through but that the collapse of the transfer to Man Utd left him wanting to leave Bournemouth.

The former Watford forward continued: “I don’t know if it came from Eddie or if it came from the club. But it came from somewhere. And that was part of the reason why I wanted to leave Bournemouth and try a new chapter.”

Man Utd dealt double Sporting blow as €70m target ‘wants to win trophies’ amid Barcelona obstacle

Manchester United won’t be signing Viktor Gyokeres this summer as the Sporting striker “wants to win trophies” with his next club.

Gyokeres has scored an incredible 83 goals in 91 appearances for Sporting since moving to the Portuguese giants from Coventry for just £20m in the summer of 2023.

His stunning form has made him a target for a number of top European clubs and he’s been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford to reunite with Ruben Amorim, who moved to United from Sporting in November.

But recent reports have claimed the 27-year-old will seek a move to a club in the Champions League next season, ruling United out unless they win the Europa League this term.

And transfer expert Duncan Castles has told Football Transfers that Gyokeres will not move to United as he “wants to win trophies”.

“He wants to go to a club where he can prove himself, where he can win trophies, and his assessment of where Manchester United are at the moment is that is not the option to take in a summer where he’ll be turning 27,” Castles said on The Transfers Podcast.

“He’s going to look at the clubs that are making him offers and pick the one that he thinks is the best place to demonstrate his time in England in the lower division and at Brighton weren’t an accurate representation of his abilities as a player, and that what he’s done in Portugal can be replicated in the English League or elsewhere in Europe.”

“He will be available this summer,” Castles added.

“Sporting have a gentleman’s agreement that he can leave for around €80m. What I’m hearing is that his agents will try and push that fee down to €60-70m.”

United are also interested in Sporting’s Francisco Trincao but have been dealt a blow in their bid to sign the former Wolves star thanks to Gyokeres’ imminent exit.

Sporting are ‘determined not to let Trincao go’ as they are ‘braced for the departure of Viktor Gyokeres’ and are looking to ward off suitors by demanding a fee ‘in excess of his £50m release clause’.

It’s claimed the Portuguese side ‘want to recoup at least £35m’ for the player they signed from Barcelona for just £6m, meaning United will need to spend £70m to get him to Old Trafford as the Catalan giants inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause in his contract.

The report confirms that ‘Amorim is convinced Trincao, with the benefit of that season at Molineux in 2021-22, will be able to make a swift adaptation to the Prem’.
