Amorim slams the brakes on United’s chase for Europe’s most coveted gunman, he’s not sold on him – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly hesitant about sanctioning a summer deal for Lille striker Jonathan David, despite his impending free-agent status.

United are expected to dip into the market for striker reinforcements and David has been mentioned to be on the club’s radar.

David is enjoying another prolific season with Lille and currently has 14 top-flight goals to his name. He has managed an impressive 23 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

The Canadian international has netted 85 goals in 170 Ligue 1 appearances. While his aerial ability is somewhat average, he boasts key qualities of a top-class number nine, including clinical finishing, excellent hold-up play, and strong passing skills.

He has made it clear that he has no plans to extend his contract at Lille, making him available on a free transfer this summer—an opportunity that has attracted interest from several top European clubs in need of a striker.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are in “concrete talks” to lure David to Old Trafford. The Red Devils are not the only outfit chasing him, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also keen.

Now, Pete Hall of The i Paper has revealed that Newcastle, faced with the prospect of losing Alexander Isak, are eyeing David.

However, Hall reports that despite inquiring about the 25-year-old, Amorim remains unconvinced. West Ham, Chelsea, and Liverpool are also interested in signing him.

The i Paper explains about David, “While six Premier League clubs are interested, it is understood none are at an advanced stage in their discussions, with no offers on the table as yet.”

“Despite making enquiries, it is unlikely David will move to Manchester United, with the versatile forward not the kind of profile Ruben Amorim is seeking.”

“The same can be said for Liverpool, with their preferred pick a more out-and-out number nine – Alexander Isak is thought to be their top target to fulfil that need.”

There remains a chance that David will move abroad. He previously declared his love for Spanish football, and a switch to Barcelona has been mooted.

Other options on the table are Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.
