6 key passes, 4 crosses, 2 shots on target: Man United’s metronome on song again despite defeat to Forest

Bruno Fernandes was Manchester United’s metronome once again as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

The Portuguese has been a shining light in a difficult period for the Red Devils but once again showed his class as Ruben Amorim’s side turned in a very respectable performance despite the result.

No player on the pitch had more touches than his 111 – nobody else even made three figures as Fernandes kept the ball moving.

As always he made a lot of passes, completing 61 of his attempted 77 to arrive at a passing accuracy of 79%.

Only three United players had a lower passing accuracy but he showed his high risk high reward approach with his six key passes, more than any of his team-mates and only one fewer than the entire opposition side.

And despite not being a wide man he found his man with four of his attempted nine crosses as the Red Devils accumulated 23 shots on goal.

Fernandes took two of those and tested Matz Sels in the home goal with both, something his team-mates struggled to do.

The 30-year-old also proved a thorn in the side of the Forest defence, winning seven of his 17 attempted duels, all of which were on the ground.

And in a characteristically busy performance the United captain made three tackles, bested only by Noussair Mazraoui’s six.

Fernandes could hardly have done more to drag his side over the line, but ultimately they were unable to find the back of the net despite their dominance.

They face Manchester City on Sunday, and despite injury to their talismanic striker Erling Haaland it promises to be a difficult encounter.

Even though he wasn’t on target today, Fernandes remains comfortably his side’s biggest goal threat with eight goals and ten assists in the Premier League this season.

Seething Amorim blames all-too-familiar problem for United’s frustrating loss to Forest

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has attributed his team’s defeat to Nottingham Forest to a lack of sharpness and clinical finishing in front of goal.

Ex-United forward Anthony Elanga scored an early goal to secure Forest all three points at the City Ground.

Elanga needed only five minutes to break the deadlock as he embarked on a run from the edge of his side’s penalty area before firing the ball into the back of the United, well past the reach of Andre Onana.

United had the lion’s share of possession and created some decent chances but they couldn’t get the much-needed equaliser.

Harry Maguire had the best late chances for the Red Devils, heading wide with the goal at his mercy, then forcing Murillo to clear off the line with the final kick of the game.

It was another frustrating outing for United, who remain in 13th position in the Premier League table with eight games left to play.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to TNT Sports [via BBC Live Reporting] and gave his verdict on the results and his team’s performance.

The Portuguese coach was particularly seething with the players’ lack of cutting edge in promising attacking positions.

Amorim told TNT, “We controlled the game, but we already knew this team can score goals out of nothing. When they scored we changed the game a little bit from what they want.”

“We tried with good opportunities, but in the last third, the last pass, the last assist wasn’t there. Then if we don’t have that we cannot score goals.”

“This season is like that. We had a lot of shots on goal, we pushed the opponent to the last third, but in the last third we had a lack of quality. We need to win games and we deserved more in this game, that is clear. But it is our fault and we need to be better in the last third. We should have won this game, not even drawn, but in the end we have lost three points.”

He continued, “We know the characters of the team and one goal can put them in one situation they love. We have to score two goals to win a match and that is frustrating as it was the beginning of the game. We helped them to win three points.”

Amorim however acknowledged that United are improving and this was evident despite the defeat.

“I see it in the game. I don’t lie to myself, everyone can say whatever they want to say, but we need to win games. We go to the next game.”

“We have Europa League and we have the next game in the Premier League and that is the focus.”

Amorim’s strange tactical switch involving overlooking in-form players hardly made any sense as Forest capitalised

Manchester United returned to Premier League action after the international break, looking to win consecutive games in the league for the first time this season.

It was also a chance to exact revenge on Nottingham Forest for the defeat at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim last year. But unfortunately, despite dominating possession and creating three times more chances, the Red Devils fell to a narrow 0-1 defeat at the City Ground.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have shown their proclivity for playing on the break while sitting deep and being hard to break down. And that was exactly what transpired on Tuesday.

Former Carrington graduate Anthony Elanga was the match-winner as he raced from one end of the pitch to another to score past a hapless Andre Onana with Noussair Mazraoui backing off all the time.

Amorim’s changes did not work

The visitors had 24 shots with six on target and hit the post from a Diogo Dalot header while Harry Maguire last-gasp shot was cleared off the line with practically the last kick of the game.

It was woeful finishing up top and a lack of cutting-edge upfront which cost the 20-time English league champions again, their story of the season. Otherwise, the link-up play between players and the way the team kept the ball at times was quote encouraging.

Alejandro Garnacho was initially deployed on the right and switched to his favoured left side in the second half but he was dismal on the night, with his woeful finishing and decision-making on display.

And Amorim’s decision to play Joshua Zirkzee as a No 9 and switch Bruno Fernandes as the No 10 after his recent heroics from central midfield seemed strange and the ploy did not work.

Lack of cutting-edge up front

Both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte looked slow in the middle of the park and Amorim made the change when it was too late as he dropped his skipper into the midfield alongside the Brazilian.

Rasmus Hojlund, fresh off a goal both for club and country last month, should have started and looked bright off the bench while Zirkzee is a far better fit as one of the attacking midfielders instead of playing up top on his own.

Breaking down a team which sits with a low-block has been United’s bane for a long time and given Amorim’s options in attack, it never looked like happening against Forest.

INEOS must bring in attacking firepower in the summer and even if it means moving on big-name players, so be it. This was United’s 13th loss in the Premier League, one fewer than their record of 14 defeats which they accumulated last season.

Tow huge games coming up for United — the Manchester derby up next followed by the all-important Europa League quarter-final clash against Olympique Lyon. The team needs to take heart from a decent display and improve further. Heads cannot afford to drop at this stage of the season.

Amorim explains Maguire’s role

Tuesday 01 April 2025 23:42

Ruben Amorim explained that Harry Maguire’s late introduction as an attacking substitution against Nottingham Forest was due to the state of the game.

Trailing by a goal with two minutes of normal time to go, Maguire displaced Yoro for the final moments at The City Ground, bringing about a reshuffle in our shape.

While the defender is known for his prowess in the air, it was an unfamiliar attacking role that he occupied after being brought off the bench – although he was well-placed on two occasions, for a handful of openings in stoppage-time in the East Midlands.

Ultimately, we couldn’t find an equaliser on our return to Premier League action, as we fell to a 1-0 defeat to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, but Amorim asserted that his team needed to get more balls into the box because of the way Forest were defending, and that Maguire’s aerial ability is among the best at his disposal in the United squad.

He spoke more on that substitution, our ability in the final third, and took on questions about Alejandro Garnacho – plus a host of other topics – in his post-match press conference at full-time.

You can now watch, or read, everything our head coach had to say in his media debrief by scrolling below.

Ruben, do you think you deserved more from that, given the amount of possession and chances you had?

“I think that is clear. We create some chances but we could create more with the possession that we had. We reached the final third a lot of times but we need to be better in that final third because that is really important to score goals and we have a lack of goals. We start the game suffering a goal and put Nottingham in the place that they want to be, defending with a lot of men. Then they have really fast players to make transitions, even that, we control quite well, especially in the second half, we push forward, but again, in the final third, we were not good enough.”

It’s a fantastic goal, Ruben, but was it a goal that could have been stopped?

“That is clear, when you have a corner, you have men to block transitions, we have all the pitch. you can make a foul. So yeah, I think if look at the game and you are the coach, you have to do better.”

Harry Maguire up top, an unconventional, perhaps, way to try to score a goal, but he did get one of the best chances. What did you make of that situation, were you at all hesitant to do that?

“In the end of the game, when the opponent is just protecting the box, if you look at the defenders of Nottingham, they are really comfortable. And then with a line of six, not five, a line of six, we can reach the final third but then we have to put the ball inside the box because it’s hard to make the combinations to get inside the box to score goal. Harry Maguire, when he’s attacking in set-pieces, is maybe the best player we have in our team, so inside the box, you are not a defender, you are a striker. So it was that idea to put I one man who is really good in the air to score a goal.”

Just one on Alejandro; he had six shots tonight, quite a few off targets, you shifted at half-time I think to the left-hand side. What did you make of his performance overall?

“He’s making everything, he’s trying, sometimes you have one day that you are doing the right things, but in the final third, you are not that good, that can happen. I was also going to ask about Garnacho as well. I know you need these chances, but do you think he’s perhaps trying to play himself into form, doing too much, because at certain times when team-mates are available, it doesn’t seem the best option he’s choosing That can happen in the game, the most important thing again for me is when he needs to run back, he’s running back. Of course, we want a player who has one against one, sometimes he’s trying too much, he has Dorgu to make a movement, but I think he wants to help the team in doing his best. Sometimes he doesn’t make the best choice, but that you can point to any player today.”

When Harry came on, in fairness to him, he did have two good chances. Is that a concern that a defender comes on, gets two chances, and then there are two strikers who the club have invested more than £100 million in, that didn’t have many chances?

“No, it depends on the characteristics. Again, Nottingham was playing with a line of six and it’s a matter also of size, in the way you have the ability to head a ball. So I don’t see it that way. That can happen with any team with the best strikers in the world. The defenders sometimes are the best ones to attack a ball inside the box. So Harry was really good on that.”

I know this was before your time, but Elanga is obviously a United Academy boy. Does the fact that he looked such a good player tonight show mistakes of the club over the years and how recruitment is just so crucial, that you have to upgrade?

“We are talking about a lot of front players that came from Manchester United and they are doing right, but they had their chance here. In Manchester United, you don’t have the time. I am saying all the time, I will not have the time – we have to get it right fast. So we are talking about players that didn’t play for Manchester United, they were here playing for Manchester United. In here, the pressure is too big sometimes. And sometimes you don’t have time and you should have time for these kids to develop, but for the team, you need a strong base to support all these kids; if you don’t have that strong base, we are not going to help our kids. So they had their chances and sometimes football is like that and the pressure of playing for Manchester United is really big.”

Mason Mount came back from his injury today coming off the bench, do you see him starting in one of the two ’no.10’ positions behind the strikers because he was looking to get behind the defenders?

“If you look at the history of Mason Mount, he played in this system many times, especially in Chelsea, he played left-hand, right-hand [side]. So I think it’s a very good position for him.”

One of the strengths of Nottingham Forest is they move the ball from back to front really quickly. Is that something that you look them as a kind of template sometimes for your side, because sometimes, you still play the ball backwards rather than going forwards?

“When you play a team that is really good on transition, if you transform the game like this and don’t push the defenders to get near, if you lose the ball we are, if you play with a big pitch, it’s harder to block transitions. Sometimes you have to start the play again, bring the ball and then everybody is close, starting with some speed to the ball. So, sometimes you have to take time to control the game, to dominate the game, and today, I think I’m always when I say our team didn’t create chances, [but] today, we create chances. And I think we had a lack quality in the final third, so if we have the quality, imagine the chances that we would supposed to be [getting]. So the game is like that, if they are good in transitions, you have to push forward first, pushing to a low block to control transitions and we did that quite well today.”

0 shots on target, 0 crosses, 4/13 duels: United attacker produces horror display up top in 1-0 loss to Forest

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

Following a prolonged international break, Man United quickly readjusted to life in the Premier League, producing a largely impressive performance despite being unable to find the back of the net.

With 68% possession and a mammoth 24 shots on goal, United would have surely felt frustrated that they weren’t able to come away with a result.

Still, Forest’s nervy win did not only come down to luck – it also came on the back of some poor finishing by the visitors.

At the heart of United’s inability to make the most of their chances was Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho had the most shots of any player on the field, with six attempts in total. Unbelievably, with three shots off target and three blocked attempts, the Argentine winger was never able to find the target.

Sadly, his dribbling wasn’t much better. Garnacho only managed to complete two of his five attempted dribbles, proof of his struggles up top.

When it came to his physicality, Garnacho struggled greatly, winning only four of his 13 ground duels. He was not involved in any aerial challenges.

He was also mostly absent when it came to assisting his teammates in defence. Garnacho only produced one defensive action, namely a tackle.

Fortunately, his performance wasn’t just doom and gloom. The winger was able to complete 49 of his 52 passes, making for an impressive 94% passing accuracy.

What’s more, he produced a notable four key passes, testament to his high involvement in United’s attacking build-ups.

In contrast, however, he could not complete a single one of his seven crosses.

Sadly, Garnacho’s attacking display is one that he would probably sooner want to forget. With the Argentine showing no signs of improving his shooting, one can only imagine how long Ruben Amorim will continue to tolerate Garnacho’s inability to produce the final product, especially with everything to play for in the Europa League.

Dalot: We are improving

Diogo Dalot provided his thoughts after Manchester United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

A single goal from former Red Anthony Elanga in the fifth minute proved to be the decider despite a spirited United performance, which Dalot felt was enough for us to garner something from The City Ground.

Speaking to MUTV after the final whistle, the Portugal international said: “I think we did enough to win the game. We had very good moments, created a lot of chances, and I think enough chances to win this game.

“It’s the price sometimes you pay in this type of level, in these types of competitions. Sometimes a little distraction, lack of focus, can be really decisive, and today it was.”

Dalot: One detail cost us today

Diogo Dalot felt that United controlled the game at Forest, which was decided in one key moment…

Given the strong performance, our no.20 rightly feels there are some positives to take away from the Reds’ trip to Nottingham.

“Overall, I think we are improving,” he continued. “We are playing better, controlling more games in possession and without possession, so [that is] something positive that we can take for the coming games.

“But in the end, we need to start being more consistent in terms of results and winning more games.”

United must quickly look ahead to Sunday’s clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford and Dalot echoed that same sentiment.

“If we want to be competitive in the future, we have to start behaving like this and we have to perform like this,” he added.

“But these little bits will have to come first if you want to compete for the Premier League and the biggest titles, we have to start creating these habits and they try to be consistent on that, and then I think the results will come by themselves.

“We still have to suffer a little bit, but in terms of getting out of this situation and trying to improve, I think we are on the right track.”

Although Dalot and his team-mates clearly have an eye on the long-term, there is the small matter of our crosstown rivals to come in M16 this weekend.

“I don’t think there’s much to say,” the 26-year-old commented. “It’s a derby.

“We have to win it, play with our fans. I think the atmosphere will be unbelievable.”

Ruben: We deserved more at Forest

Tuesday 01 April 2025 23:02

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim believes his side did enough at The City Ground to warrant a positive result, following our 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Anthony Elanga proved pivotal, with the former Red netting the only goal of the game after just five minutes.

The Reds dominated the ball throughout the majority of the contest but often struggled to convert that into clear-cut chances.

Diogo Dalot hit the frame of the goal in the first half, while Harry Maguire saw his late effort cleared off the line by Murillo.

United must now dust ourselves off for Sunday’s clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford, as Amorim said himself after the full-time whistle.

Scroll down to read what the boss made of our overall display in the East Midlands, as he spoke to various outlets, including TNT Sports and the BBC…

WE DESERVED MORE“I think we controlled the game. We already knew that this team [Forest] can score goals out of nothing. Then when they scored, we changed the game a little bit for what they want. Then we tried sometimes with the good opportunities but I think in the last cross, the last pass, the last assist [it] wasn’t there. When we don’t have that we cannot score goals. But we have some situations and this season is like that. We try it. We have a lot of shots on goal. We push the opponent to the last third. But in the end we had a lack of quality in the final third.”

ELANGA’S OPENER“But I think we get in the game. We were okay in the game, controlling the game and then one transition from our set-pieces [changes the game]. We cannot suffer this kind of goal. We already knew that, Nottingham [Forest] can score from through [balls] and wins from second balls, then we suffer a goal and then it is harder to win against this team.”

OVERALL FRUSTRATIONS

“Yeah, it was always frustrating when you don’t win. Especially when, I think if you look at the game, we deserve more than [to] lose the game. So that is more frustrating than when you see that the opponent is better than us. It was not the case today. So it’s really frustrating.”

WHY HARRY PLAYED IN ATTACK

“If you look at the game, especially in the final 15 minutes, they were defending the box with six men. So we need more men inside the box. We cannot get inside the box with combinations. And then Harry Maguire is really strong on set-pieces in the opposite box. And when you are playing in the opposite box, you are a striker, not a defender. So we look at the best guys playing inside the box and there is maybe the best guy to play inside the box.”

ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK

“It’s more [of] the same since this season began. So I think if you look at the game we are improving the way we play football. We are creating more chances, we are dominating more games. But in the end, when you don’t win, you feel that and that is a good thing. So we know that this season is going to be like that, the momentum. So we continue to go to the next [game].”

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE?

“Yes, because if you look at some games, we cannot create situations where they create. The opponent sometimes create more opportunities and today was not the case. They scored one shot maybe two shots at goal and we manage not to score again. We have to improve in the last third. We are improving the way we build up. We are pushing the opponents more to their half, but there’s a lot to be given.”

Manchester United, Garnacho and Ten Hag shamed by £15m star who ‘just wanted to play’

Manchester United selling Anthony Elanga for £15m while valuing Alejandro Garnacho at £70m is the sort of mistake which sums up their transfer failures.

Manchester United are abysmal at transfers. That is no revelation. Their abhorrent record of post-Ferguson signings is painfully well known. But they are arguably worse at every aspect of player sales and not nearly enough is made of how that catastrophic failure has been more consistently damaging than poor recruitment to their hopes of any meaningful rebuild.

They have never generated more than £100m in a single season through selling players (four Premier League clubs did this season alone). They are the only current Premier League club whose record sale came before 2011. They still count David Beckham to Real Madrid in 2003 as their fourth-largest sale ever, and two of the players above him – Angel Di Maria and Romelu Lukaku – were offloaded at a loss compared to what they were originally signed for.

It is, in a sentence, entirely absurd to think they might have £310m worth of players, never mind that they will sell as much and still have the bones of a squad left for Ruben Amorim to work with.

Last summer was a tentative step vaguely in the right direction. The £92m generated in exchange for Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, Alvaro Fernandez, Donny van de Beek, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Facundo Pellistri, Will Fish, Hannibal Mejbri and Scott McTominay was largely pure profit-shaped and represented some difficult decisions being made by a club not afraid to make mistakes or look stupid.

McTominay thriving with Napoli provides a handy stick with which critics can beat Manchester United, and there was more than an element of hands being forced over Mason Greenwood, whose true colours could not be concealed for a full season in his eternal professional struggle between talent and application.

But realistically it should matter not to Manchester United what players do when they leave, so long as they are remunerated appropriately for departures being sanctioned at the best time for the club. If Chelsea or Manchester City carried any regret when a former player subsequently showed them up it would have to be amortised over the next five decades; competent clubs accept it as part of the transfer game and move on to the next deal.

It is why Amorim will and is entirely right to sidestep laborious questions about Marcus Rashford and Antony each week, why the Portuguese can set aside any frustration at their new-found confidence and aptitude since leaving. They have for all intents and purposes been deemed surplus to requirements and performing well on loan only enhances Manchester United’s chances of securing a better deal.

But selling Anthony Elanga for £20m while valuing Alejandro Garnacho at around £70m is the sort of regime-spanning gross miscalculation which will be tough to move past.

Nottingham Forest’s winning goal at the City Ground to ensure a first league double over Manchester United in the Premier League era was another belated nail in the Erik ten Hag coffin. Elanga has long since stated that the Dutchman wasn’t the reason he chose to leave in July 2023, but his explanation that “I just wanted to play” places the ball back in the court of a manager who did not share that vision.

Ten Hag favoured the development of Garnacho instead and at least in part because of FFP pressure following the disastrous Antony signing, Elanga had to be sacrificed for a pittance.

And that is the oversight. It is easy to suggest Manchester United’s decision to sell Elanga has been exposed as a mistake by his Forest brilliance but the simple truth is stylistic: that he is a perfect counter-attacking forward bears no relevance to prior reservations over his suitability against packed defences.

The problem will always be the price. When Liverpool apply an automatic £25m tax to any player it is mind-boggling that Manchester United only received a guaranteed £15m from a Premier League rival for a forward who scored a Champions League knockout goal for them away at Atletico Madrid barely a year earlier.

But the still image of Garnacho sprawled on the ground, having bounced off Elanga seconds before the Sweden international completed his unopposed run from box to box before scoring with his weaker foot, was irresistible from a narrative viewpoint.

Not content with the unflattering nature of that comparison, Garnacho proceeded to turn in another display belying Manchester United’s asking price. The majority of the visitors’ best chances fell his way but the Argentinean could not get a single shot on target from six attempts, did not find a teammate with any of his seven crosses, still shows no signs of a connection on his flank with Patrick Dorgu and was booked for kicking the ball away after being caught entirely unnecessarily offside.

These Premier League games ultimately do not matter for Manchester United beyond an extra few million quid in terms of potential prize money, which should take on a greater importance under the cost-cutting rule of Sir Jim Ratcliffe but will never turn the needle quite like stopping free lunches or charity donations. But players cannot afford to share that mindset under Amorim, who will demand only the best in each game like any other coach.

Forest provided that in spades to push ever closer to an unthinkable Champions League place. Ryan Yates was phenomenal, Murillo wonderfully maintained the cleanliness of Matz Sels’ sheet in the final minute of stoppage time and Nuno Espirito Santo showed that Portuguese managers need not rigidly swear by only one formation when he seamlessly switched shape in the first half upon an injury to Ola Aina.

But Elanga was the inevitable star on yet another chastening evening for Manchester United, and his amiable post-match magnanimity somehow only stuck the knife in further. “Coming to Forest was about playing,” he said. “I learnt a lot at Manchester United. I appreciate them a lot.”

It’s just a shame the feeling wasn’t mutual when it needed to be.

Nottingham Forest 1 United 0

Tuesday 01 April 2025 22:05

Manchester United’s run of four matches unbeaten came to a halt as we were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest at The City Ground.

Former Red and Academy graduate Anthony Elanga provided the decisive moment of the game, and only within a couple of minutes of the referee’s initial whistle, scoring with a solo effort on the counter-attack to make the crucial difference.

United fought for a way back into the contest, with Diogo Dalot hitting the crossbar in the first half, and a period of late pressure culminating in Harry Maguire’s shot being cleared off the line at the death, but we were ultimately unable to take anything back home from the East Midlands.

The Reds line up at kick-off.

FIRST HALF – ELANGA’S SOLO STRIKE

Following a 16-day period without a game, Ruben Amorim was able to bring a number of previously unavailable players back into his squad, including Leny Yoro and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu to start – returning from injury and suspension, respectively.

Casemiro and Joshua Zirkzee made up four changes to our XI from beating Leicester City before the international break, with Altay Bayindir, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount all welcome returnees to our substitutes bench, too.

A couple of the mainstays of the side recently combined for the game’s first opening, when Matthijs de Ligt’s pressed high to win it back from Taiwo Awoniyi in the centre circle, before Garnacho quickly released the ball to Fernandes, whose drive from the edge of the area was parried wide by Matz Sels in the Forest goal.

The corner did indeed lead to the opening goal, but not as we’d hoped – with a former Red netting at the other end. Anthony Elanga pounced as Fernandes’s set-piece delivery was headed clear, racing away from the edge of his own box to the other, where he arrowed a composed finish beyond Andre Onana and into the bottom corner, with just five minutes on the clock.

That setback, after United looked to have started well, did not dispirit our search for an equaliser, as Garnacho crossed accurately from the right, only for Dorgu – making only his second Premier League start after serving a three-match ban – to be unfortunately nudged off the ball in the centre.

Casemiro then nodded wide of the near post from a Fernandes corner and, approaching the half-hour mark, that routine was almost repeated to devastating effect, as the skipper this time picked out Dalot in a similar spot, with the defender’s header across goal rebounding off the crossbar. Elanga had also made another mazy run into the box at the other end, but this time was stopped in his tracks.

Dorgu also had a headed opportunity but could not connect properly with Dalot’s right-flank delivery, while Morato – one of two Forest substitutes late in the half, replacing the injured Ola Aina – also nodded goalwards in first-half stoppage-time, forcing Onana to save.

Casemiro looked to equalise on the stroke of half-time, following patient build-up down our left as he was teed up by Fernandes just outside the box, but fired wide – meaning we went in at the break pondering solutions for the second half.

Diogo Dalot headed one chance against the woodwork.

SECOND HALF – NO BREAKTHROUGH

Rasmus Hojlund was brought on for the start of the second half with Manuel Ugarte making way, immediately making his presence felt in attack, running in behind to meet Garnacho’s pass and shooting from the angle, with a defender’s touch earning him a corner.

But like in the first half, while United created the first opening following the restart, Forest caused their own problems in attack quickly afterwards. There was no goal to follow the United corner this time, but Andre Onana must have thought he’d stopped one when he heroically palmed clear Ryan Yates’s close-range header, even if he wasn’t to know that it would almost certainly have been ruled out for offside.

We were unable to create as much as we’d have liked in the early stages of the second half, though Hojlund offered encouragement in attack, appearing sharp off the bench, while Garnacho was unfortunate with a quickfire pair of chances midway through the half – latching on to a Fernandes ball and having a shot deflect wide. From the resulting corner, he shot narrowly off target – again, seemingly with the help of a slight touch off Morgan Gibbs-White, but play resumed with a goal-kick.

Fernandes found De Ligt with a free-kick as our pressure began to intensify, the defender heading across goal and Hojlund getting the next touch, but failed to match the run of Zirkzee, and Garnacho fired a frustrated effort over the bar shortly afterwards.

Mason Mount flashed a strike just wide on his return from almost four months out.

Hojlund held it up well down the left side of the box but sold Garnacho just short in seeking to tee him up, before Dorgu headed an expert Fernandes cross straight at Sels, and another attempt from Mount – moments after making his return from the bench – flashed agonisingly wide of the post from the edge of the box.

A rare opportunity for the hosts – aside from a couple of optimistic penalty shouts – saw Awoniyi turn well in the box to shoot, only to be denied by a crucial block from Noussair Mazraoui. Neco Williams also tried his luck in stoppage-time, but was unable to get a difficult volleyed chance on target.

A dramatic period of six additional minutes were signalled, and at the start of those closing quarters, Harry Maguire – brought on just before and deployed in an attacking role – found himself in the opposition area, but diverted Dorgu’s delivery back across goal and wide.

United applied all the pressure late on, very nearly finding an equaliser at the death, as Mazraoui’s cross hung dangerously at the back post and seemed to have been prodded home when it landed at the feet of Maguire, but a heroic clearance off the line from Murillo confirmed it wasn’t to be our night at The City Ground.

It wasn’t to be for United at The City Ground.

Christian Eriksen made his 100th Manchester United appearance during Tuesday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.

Eriksen is in his third year with the club having joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

The Denmark international, who previously enjoyed spells with Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Internazionale and Brentford, has scored a total of seven goals for United.

Christian made his debut for the club in August 2022 against Brighton.

The 33-year-old made his first appearance for the club back in August 2022, as we were beaten 2-1 on the opening day of the season at Old Trafford by Brighton and Hove Albion.

Eriksen has lifted two trophies during his time with the Reds, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and also playing a part in last year’s Emirates FA Cup triumph.

He has played under three managers, beginning with Erik ten Hag and finds himself currently as an experienced member of Amorim’s squad.

Some of his best displays in a red shirt have come this season, notably during our 7-0 win over Barnsley in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The former Ajax man scored twice in our thrashing of the League One outfit and also registered an assist for Alejandro Garnacho after 49 minutes.

Eriksen’s super strike against FC Twente was additionally named our Goal of the Month for September, as he caressed an effort in the top corner in the 1-1 draw.

Christian has enjoyed a solid season for United, as documented here.

Christian becomes the 226th Red and the third Dane to have chalked up 100 outings for United.

Goalkeeping icon Peter Schmeichel leads the way on 398 appearances, with Jesper Olsen behind him with a tally of 176 games.

Congratulations on a terrific feat, Christian!
