United “continuing discussions” with PL side with INEOS determined to show noisy neighbours their place – report

Manchester United are refusing to bow down to Manchester City in their pursuit of Elliot Anderson. It seemed like a foregone conclusion a couple of weeks ago, with reports emerging that the Englishman preferred a switch to the Etihad over Old Trafford. INEOS had refused to enter a bidding war with their noisy neighbours, something Nottingham Forest were hoping for to drive the midfielder’s price even higher. City have since submitted their opening offer, which was rejected, with Forest deeming the 23-year-old to be worth more than £100 million. City yet to agree a fee for Elliot Anderson A valuation gap of more than £20 million currently exists, and United co-owners INEOS feel there is a chance to hijack the deal. There is growing optimism on the red side of Manchester that an agreement can yet be struck, with the Red Devils open to offering a sizeable increase in wages to the England international. TeamTalk have now revealed that the 20-time English league champions remain locked in talks with Forest as they wait for City to slip up. “Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Elliot Anderson this summer despite Manchester City’s growing confidence of securing the England international, TEAMtalk can confirm. United remain locked in talks with Forest “Forest are standing firm in their belief that Anderson is worth in excess of £100million and have made no secret of their view that his value should surpass the £105million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice. “City, meanwhile, are prepared to break their own transfer record to land the 23-year-old, but sources indicate they remain almost £20million short of Forest’s current demands. “Sources close to Old Trafford have told TEAMtalk that the club remain firmly interested in Anderson and have continued discussions regarding a potential move despite City’s advanced position. “TEAMtalk understands that conversations have taken place and United remain alert to any opportunity should negotiations between City and Forest fail to reach a conclusion.” Why United are refusing to bow down to City This saga is unlikely to end anytime soon. More twists and turns are expected, giving United the confidence that their race is yet to be run. United are pushing so hard as they feel Elliot Anderson is the perfect fit to replace the departing Casemiro, despite the Brazilian himself feeling Ederson is ready to fill the gap. Ugarte discusses his special bond with former United starlet as the pair set out to realise ambitious World Cup goal

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has insisted that Uruguay are well in contention to win the World Cup in North America this summer. World Cup hopes Ugarte will be looking to make history when he represents Uruguay at the World Cup, as the nation seeks to add another feather to its cap. Though Uruguay is a relatively small country by population, it remains one of just eight nations to have won the tournament heading into this edition. But it has been 75 years since Uruguay last won it. If they are to enjoy success at the tournament, Ugarte will likely play a big role. He endured a difficult 2025/26 at United despite the club finishing in third place and securing Champions League football. The South American struggled for playing time under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick. It’s looking increasingly likely that his time at United has come to an end, with reports suggesting that there is interest in him from Turkey. There have also been rumours that he has admirers in the Premier League and Serie A. However, for now, Ugarte’s full focus is on the World Cup and according to him, Uruguay can go all the way and lift the trophy. Ugarte’s remarks The 25-year-old told club media, “Uruguay is a small country, but we have a history in football. We won the World Cup before. We know the reality, we know the favourite teams, but Uruguay always can win, in my opinion.” On what representing his country means to him, Ugarte answered, “I love my country. I’m so proud. We are few people, that means we are so together. We are close to each other. We have friends in the squad. We have friends everywhere. So, if we win the World Cup, we’re going to be so happy.” Ugarte singled out Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde as a player who could be decisive for Uruguay at the World Cup. “He’s amazing. He’s an amazing guy. He has everything, that’s my opinion. For me, he’s the most complete player in the world. He can do everything and he does everything well.” “I grew up watching him in the Under-20s so, for me, it’s a big experience playing with him. And also, we have a really good relationship, he’s like my friend, so I’m so happy that he’s with Uruguay.” Ugarte also opened up on his relationship with former United man Guillermo Varela, who was at the club from 2013 to 2017. Now at Flamengo, Ugarte notes that Varela still speaks well of his time in Manchester. “Yeah, I spoke with him about the club and also I spoke with the staff [at United] about him. They like him and, of course, he has really good memories in this club. He was young when he was here, but he enjoyed [it] a lot and it was a big achievement in his career. Ugarte said of working under Marcelo Bielsa, who was renowned for his intense, no-nonsense training regimen at Leeds United, “Yeah, Marcelo, he’s special. He’s a special manager. He wants to control everything. He’s really good, looking at you, how you play, what you need. And yeah, everyone is with him. It’s going to be really important all together, all closer, and try to follow his ideas.” He continued, “The next preparation, for the World Cup, I think it’s going to be [intense], and it’s good because if you reach, between us, a good intensity, in the World Cup, nothing going to be more intense than that. So, in that way, it’s good for us.” Ugarte and his teammates kickstart their World Cup campaign on Tuesday, 16 June, when they face Saudi Arabia. Christian Eriksen breaks his silence after frightening collapse vs. Ukraine with heartfelt statement

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has released a statement after he collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday. Scary incident TV cameras caught Eriksen holding his chest in the 65th minute of action before he collapsed to the floor, prompting the referee to immediately stop the game. The medics acted swiftly to Eriksen as both sets of players formed a protective ring around Eriksen. The game was eventually called off, with the score 2-1 in Denmark’s favour. Fortunately, Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch before he was taken to the hospital for further examination. Denmark national team doctoer Morten Boesen, who is widely credited with saving Eriksen’s life in 2021 when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Euro 2020, issued an update and confirmed that the ex-United man was doing well and in good spirits. United also released a statement, sending their love and strength to Eriksen and his family. Now, the 34-year-old has broken his silence on the situation. Eriksen’s statement He wrote on social media, “I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family.” “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.” “I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.” He added, “In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years.” “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.” “For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.” It’s truly a huge relief and a positive sign to learn that Eriksen is doing well and on the road to recovery. United superstar “recommended” INEOS to go after relentless pressing machine, Red Devils have done just that – report

Manchester United’s priority in the transfer market is revamping their midfield, with added emphasis placed on finding the perfect replacement for Casemiro. INEOS had identified Elliot Anderson as the Brazilian‘s heir, but as things stand, Manchester City remain in pole position. Alternative options include Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. The Newcastle ace’s valuation and wage demands are proving problematic. As for the West Ham star, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain’s interest have complicated proceedings, while the Hammers are refusing to lower their asking price despite their relegation. Ederson role explained The Portuguese ace is seen more as an eventual replacement for Bruno Fernandes, which means the Red Devils are yet to fill the gap left by the five-time Champions League winner. Or have they? United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but the initial assumption was that the Brazilian would come in as Manuel Ugarte’s replacement. However, the 26-year-old could emerge as his compatriot’s direct replacement if Sports Center Brazil are to be believed. The report claims that Casemiro, before leaving Old Trafford, specifically asked INEOS to try and sign the Atalanta ace to fill his boots. How Casemiro helped United clinch the deal “Casemiro recommended Ederson to Manchester United before leaving.” The Peoples Person has already analysed Ederson’s ability to play at the base of midfield, a position he has occupied under three different managers during his time at Bergamo. However, he is better suited as a box-to-box midfielder capable of crashing into the box late on. Whether Michael Carrick has different plans for the new recruit remains to be seen. For now, United fans will be desperate to catch a glimpse of their new signing after Ederson was called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. United have special plans in store for mesmerising maestro, CL champions threatening to crush Carrick’s dream – report

Manchester United are looking to replace Casemiro with a Premier League-proven performer. The Red Devils have already signed Ederson from Atalanta, but he is viewed more as a replacement for Manuel Ugarte, who is also expected to depart Old Trafford this summer. Elliot Anderson was INEOS’ preferred choice, but Manchester City are threatening to derail those plans. Sandro Tonali was another name in the frame, but Newcastle’s valuation, coupled with the player’s own wage demands, are proving prohibitive. Problems galore in race for Mateus Fernandes This is why the 20-time English league champions pivoted to Mateus Fernandes of West Ham and the thinking was the Hammers’ relegation would make matters easier. So far, that has not proven to be the case. While the Portuguese midfielder would love to come to United, the London side’s valuation and Real Madrid’s entry into the race have complicated matters. Teamtalk have now revealed that Paris Saint-Germain have also joined the transfer tussle, and as things stand, the 21-year-old would be open to a switch to the Champions League winners. Whether this is a ploy to put pressure on United to up the ante remains to be seen. However, the three-time Champions League winners have plans of their own to further entice Mateus Fernandes. INEOS’ special plans to attract Mateus Fernandes According to the report, INEOS feel the Portugal international is the perfect successor for Bruno Fernandes, the current captain. The ex-Southampton star has already revealed that the United skipper is his idol, and the chance to play alongside him and eventually take over his role would be hard to turn down. “Manchester United have made fresh contacts over a potential move for West Ham star Mateus Fernandes as they continue their search for another midfielder this summer, TEAMtalk understands. “His strong tackling, progressive passing and composure have attracted widespread interest despite the team’s struggles. United view him as a potential long-term option who could partner or succeed club captain Bruno Fernandes, a player the youngster idolises. Ball is now on Mateus Fernandes’ court “However, European champions Paris Saint-Germain could scupper Man Utd’s plans. We understand PSG remain in contact with Fernandes’ representatives and are big admirers of the player, viewing the Portugal youth international as a perfect addition to their midfield. “Sources say the lure of European Champions League football is of major interest to the ambitious 21-year-old, who is keen on a move to a club competing at the highest level. He is understood to be very open to joining Man Utd or PSG should the right opportunity arise.” INEOS will hope this lure proves enough to win the race for his services. This effectively means Mateus Fernandes is seen as the versatile midfield option that Carrick craves to add depth to the squad. However, the search for Casemiro’s successor will continue as neither Ederson nor the West Ham ace are fit to play the exact same role. Looking at the 2025–26 Premier League table, champions Arsenal scored 71 goals and conceded just 27. Manchester City, who came second, scored 77 goals and conceded 35. Manchester United, meanwhile, finished third, scoring 69 goals but conceding 50. Looking at those numbers, it becomes painfully clear what truly held United back last season: they were conceding far too many goals. The Red Devils scored plenty but finished with only a +19 goal difference. Arsenal scored just two more goals than United, yet boasted a +44 goal difference. That gulf tells the whole story. Premier League top three 2025-26 PosClubGPWDLFAGD 1Arsenal (ARS)3826757127+44 2Manchester City (MNC)3823967735+42 3Manchester United (MAN)38201176950+19 Arsenal’s defence won them the league It is so obvious. Not the attack, but the defensive side of the game was the defining difference between the Manchester Reds and the champions. Had United conceded fewer goals, they would arguably have had a far better chance of battling Arsenal for the title. That said, Arsenal are arguably the best defensive unit in the league, genuinely hard to penetrate. They got to where they are by making shrewd defensive signings and recruiting a brilliant goalkeeper: David Raya, who has claimed the last three Golden Gloves. In Senne Lammens, The 20-time English champions have a fantastic goalkeeper who is arguably on Raya’s level, if not better. Yet while this squad could clearly benefit from defensive reinforcements, that does not appear to be under consideration. If it were, INEOS would not have allowed defensive target Marcos Senesi to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Michael Carrick, therefore, will have to work with the defenders at his disposal. In Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, and Ayden Heaven, he has decent options to build from. United were dreadful on set pieces, but worked diligently on that area and ultimately became the second-most dangerous side from dead-ball situations last term. That same focus can now be directed at their defensive shape. Extra focus on Manchester United’s defensive play could change everything Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate were brought in as Carrick’s assistants specifically to help sort out Manchester United’s defensive structure. Their task is to analyse what United were getting wrong and act on it decisively. They must ensure the team’s shape out of possession is compact; opponents cannot run through them or break them down with ease. Equally, they must manage squad rotation sensibly to avoid injuries while ensuring opportunities are handed to those who have earned them. For example, Heaven, who has repeatedly proven he is too good to be warming the bench, needs to be given his chance. There also needs to be smarter player profiling to identify which pairings complement each other and commit to the strongest partnership; something reminiscent of Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand would bring the stability this backline desperately craves. Constantly changing partners kills chemistry, structure, and consistency at the back. Midfield rebuild could come in handy With the right six in place, the relationship between midfield and defence must also be carefully cultivated. The defensive midfielder and the centre-backs need to be on the same wavelength, working in tandem to keep United’s defensive block solid. A successful midfield rebuild should considerably relieve pressure on the backline, making it far harder for opponents to exploit them. Additionally, more work is needed on playing out from the back. At times last season, Lammens visibly struggled in that department, and opponents ruthlessly punished him for it. Score more, concede less Ultimately, it does not help when the attack is firing on all cylinders, yet the defence remains porous. If United can concede fewer goals while sustaining that goalscoring form, this team will be in a far stronger position to go toe-to-toe with Arsenal for league glory. Manchester United appear to be ready to pause their plans to revamp the midfield in order to pursue the signing of a high-profile defender who divides opinion. Over the last few days, much has been written about United’s hunt for the signatures of Ederson and Mateus Fernandes. A total agreement to sign the Brazilian from Atalanta has already been reached. Meanwhile, INEOS have opened talks with West Ham United for the Portuguese youngster. Amid this, a reliable Argentine journalist has dropped a major update on the club’s attempt to strengthen their backline. Manchester United considering making a move for Cristian Romero According to reputed Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, Manchester United want to sign Cristian from Tottenham Hotspur. Edul does not specify how much United are willing to pay for the Argentina international. However, previous reports have stated that the North London club, who narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last season, value Romero between €60 million and €65 million. The World Cup-winning defender is under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until the summer of 2029. Manchester United’s decision to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 turned out to be a disaster, but they have already rectified that by signing Senne Lammens last year. The Red Devils were looking for a long-term replacement for club legend David de Gea when they turned their attention to the Cameroonian. The Spanish custodian was displaying signs of decline and the Premier League giants wanted to address the issue by moving for Onana. Former manager Erik ten Hag, who had worked with the player at Ajax, secured a reunion at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian was coming off an impressive campaign in which he featured in the UEFA Champions League final with the Nerazzurri. This was enough to convince United to pay approximately £47.2 million for his signature. Onana struggled to live up to expectations Onana was impressive with the ball at his feet and did occasionally show signs of brilliance at the Theatre of Dreams. However, his error-prone performances soon divided opinion among fans. The Cameroonian conceded 150 goals in 102 appearances for United, registering 24 clean sheets. Onana dropped behind Altay Bayindir at the beginning of last season, and his position was further affected by the Red Devils’ acquisition of Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day. The 30 year old eventually joined Trabzonspor on loan and has had a decent spell in Turkey. Meanwhile, Lammens has enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign and is now United’s new No. 1, raising further doubts about Onana’s future. The Cameroonian is due to return to Old Trafford this summer, but no longer has a future with the Premier League giants. A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that Trabzonspor could return for the player this summer. While things did not work out between him and United, Inter Milan will have no regrets about the transfer. Best transfer in the club’s history Speaking on the Supernova podcast, Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio hailed Onana’s sale as the best transfer in the club’s history. He said: “Inter are proud of the Onana [deal].” “It depends on what we’re talking about. If it’s about a capital gain, then probably Onana [is the best deal]. He joined Inter on a free transfer and left for an enormous fee. I think it may be the highest capital gain in the club’s history. Only deals like the Ibrahimovic one get close.” Zlatan left Inter in the summer of 2009 to move to Barcelona in a reported £57 million deal. Final Thoughts United fans will be relieved that Onana’s nightmare spell at Old Trafford is all but over. INEOS must cash in on the Cameroonian this summer, although offloading him permanently will not be easy. Former Manchester United midfielder Zidane Iqbal has revealed that his ultimate transfer dream is to return to the Premier League. United spell Iqbal joined United’s youth set-up at the age of nine and came through the ranks, eventually signing his first professional contract in April 2021. During his academy days, he gained a reputation for outstanding ball control and composed, unflappable performances in the middle of the park. He made his senior debut on 8 December 2021 as an 89th-minute substitute during a UEFA Champions League group stage match against Young Boys at Old Trafford. He came onto the pitch in place of fellow academy graduate Jesse Lingard. In making his debut, Iqbal made history. He became the first British-born South Asian to play for United, as well as the first Iraqi to feature for the club. In addition, he became the first British South Asian player ever to take the pitch in the Champions League. But he later found opportunities extremely hard to come by at Old Trafford. He left in June 2023, joining Dutch club FC Utrecht on a four-year deal. Now 23 years old, Iqbal has one year left on his contract in the Netherlands. He spoke to The Athletic and opened up on his time at the club, marking Cristiano Ronaldo in training and his future aspirations. Iqbal’s remarks Iqbal told the news outlet, “I got chosen to go do set pieces with the first team, and then I had to mark Cristiano (Ronaldo). I got told, ‘Just don’t do anything stupid. No elbows, no nothing.’” “Just to see him in real life compared to FIFA (the video game), because sometimes FIFA’s face scan might be a bit off, you know?” While at United, Iqbal was part of the Professional Footballers’ Association’s inclusion and mentoring programme for British Asians, which looks to improve their representation in the game. He said about this, “When I was growing up, I didn’t have anyone to really look up to. When you see someone who looks like you, has the same hairstyle, dresses like you, speaks the same language, probably eats the same food at home, that hits home a bit more. You can relate a bit more.” He said of making his United debut and subsequently featuring in pre-season, “Everything was on top of the world. I didn’t think I could have done anything wrong every time I got the ball, making the right decisions, doing the right skills or passes. Everything felt right.” On his future, he remarked, “I’m open to anything… but of course, I want to play at the highest level possible.” “For me, all eyes on the World Cup. I want to put my best foot forward there, show that I can hang around with the big players, and I always back myself, no matter who I play.” Iqbal and his Iraq teammates kickstart their World Cup campaign on Tuesday, 16 June, when they face Norway. Manchester United are gearing up for a potentially record-breaking transfer window this summer, with INEOS planning a major overhaul of Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of a return to Europe next season. Carrick the Caretaker While even the most ardent acolyte of Sir Jim Ratcliffe would struggle to say last season went to plan, the second half of a turbulent campaign went exactly as sporting director Jason Wilcox planned. Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous tenure came to an abrupt end in January, with Carrick drafted in as caretaker coach in the wake of the prickly Portuguese’s sacking. Wilcox’s brief to the former midfielder was simple: deliver Champions League football. It was an ambitious goal, given the feelings of despair which had engulfed Old Trafford during a bleak midwinter. But Carrick, aided by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion and Jonny Evans as assistants, was unperturbed by the size of the task ahead – with good reason. From Carrick’s first game at the helm – a resounding 2-0 win in the Manchester Derby – United have accumulated the most points of any side in the Premier League, winning twelve matches, drawing three, and losing just twice. Only Manchester City have scored more in this period. Extrapolated across the entire campaign, it translates to 87 points, two more than champions Arsenal. It is title-winning form over just under half a season, having beaten each member of England’s ‘top six’ along the way. In short, Carrick aced his test. His invigilators were left with no other choice than to pass him with flying colours, despite giving brief consideration to a few other high-flying students in the exam hall. The Wallsend native put pen to paper on a two-year deal to become United’s permanent head coach last month. His coaching staff were handed the same contract. He was already involved in recruitment meetings to plan the club’s movements this summer, but his voice will naturally carry more weight now. While fans may have wanted a ‘sexier’ name in the dugout next season, the decision to stick with Carrick, rather than twist to a Roberto De Zerbi, maintains the stability that the former midfielder has imbued throughout the club since his return – the same sense of calm he exuded as a player on the pitch. Off the Pitch Similarly, United are in a stable position off the pitch. The club’s finances are trending in the right direction, and the executive structure – led by Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada – is working as a synergised unit. The recruitment team, with Christopher Vivell and analytics chief Michael Sansoni, works closely with Wilcox and Carrick to identify the exact type of players needed, as well as those who should be shown the door. United are hoping to bolster their budget with sales this summer. Rasmus Hojlund’s £38 million switch to Serie A side Napoli has already been confirmed, while talks are ongoing to finalise a £26m deal with FC Barcelona for Marcus Rashford, though this is proving onerous. Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia will leave as free agents this summer, significantly reducing the wage bill, while a host of reserve and youth players, such as goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek, are set to be sold or loaned. Champions League qualification generates around an extra £100m in revenue, while the commercial branch at Old Trafford has been busy agreeing record-breaking sponsorship deals. The prospect of deeper runs in the cup competitions next year will be similarly lucrative, given United fell at the first hurdle in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. In short, United will have cash to burn this summer, with one well-placed source indicating the total is “almost certain” to trump last year’s outlay of £240m – which would make it the most spent in a window in the club’s 148-year history. Final Thoughts – Big Summer Ahead The focus is a major revamp in midfield, with Casemiro set to leave a massive hole in Carrick’s squad that Manuel Ugarte has proven incapable of filling. A £39m deal has already been struck for Atalanta dynamo Ederson, while negotiations have been opened for West Ham starlet Mateus Fernandes. But a ‘marquee’ No.6 to take the reins from Casemiro is still the most urgent priority. Nottingham Forest and England international Elliot Anderson is the primary target, while Real Madrid superstar Aurelien Tchouameni is an ambitious alternative. Reinforcements are being targeted on the left-hand side as well, with initial talks held to explore options at full-back and on the wing. At present, a new left-back is understood to be higher on the agenda, with Wilcox a huge fan of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. A new No.2 to back up Senne Lammens will be needed, while a more reliable striker than Joshua Zirkzee to lighten the burden on Benjamin Sesko is also wanted. The Dutch forward is likely to return to Serie A. While this may feel like an unrealistic number of signings to make in one window, David Ornstein has confirmed he expects the Red Devils to be the “busiest” club in the Premier League this summer. “Manchester United need to do a bit of volume [in the market] because they are stepping up into Champions League football from no European football – and their squad is not sufficiently well stocked. So I could see a lot of activity at Old Trafford,” the transfer expert revealed on the Athletic Football podcast. Ornstein concludes: “If I was to give you one team that will be the busiest, I am going to say Manchester United.” There is no source in football that tops ‘The Ornacle’, meaning United fans, including this writer, can start to let their imagination run wild.
