Benjamin Sesko was prominent before being substituted, and supplied the assist for Mbeumo’s first effort, with Casemiro also on the scoresheet on a good night for everybody of a Reds persuasion.”They have a lot of talent,” Ruben said of his forwards, in his interviews with Sky Sports and MUTV. “But I really like the way they defend. “Especially the three in front. “He can hide that, but I understood it”: Amorim gives surprise update on United goalscorer
Manchester United’s 4-2 triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion was significant for several reasons. It left the Red Devils, temporarily at least, in fourth place in the Premier League, and was also a rare win over one of United’s biggest bogey sides. But it also makes it three wins on the bounce for Ruben Amorim, a feat the Portuguese had never managed in a tumultuous year in charge. A matter of confidence Speaking to BBC’s Match of the Day after the game, Amorim admitted “it is a good feeling” to have secured three points in front of an Old Trafford crowd. “To listen to the crowd, the joy, it is important, he said. “We need to enjoy that today but then prepare for the next one.” The next one sees United travel to troubled Nottingham Forest, and Amorim’s side will be hoping to build on a run of good form which really kicked off in last week’s win over Liverpool. Discussing that triumph, Amorim said: “It is a very good boost, but again in our club, we have to maintain that with hard work, and when you are confident, you play better. “You have better moments and a little bit of luck when you have the right spirit, so everything is in our favour at the moment, but we have to keep working hard to maintain that.” Change in spirit The Red Devils looked to be cruising to an unusually comfortable win after Matheus Cunha made it 3-0, but allowed the Seagulls to pull it back to 3-2. There was a familiar feeling of dread inside Old Trafford, but this time United toughed it out and Bryan Mbeumo’s second of the game ensured a happy ending. Reflecting on the nervy last period, Amorim said: “It is hard [at 3-2], but we had some moments in the past when the spirit was a little bit different, and we suffered more. “But today we scored the last goal because I felt we could deal with bad moments in a better way than we showed last year. And when you have a better spirit, you have a bit of luck.” Cunha hitting his stride After an impressive performance at Anfield, the only thing Cunha was missing since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers was a goal. The Brazilian finally made it onto the scoresheet today with a beautiful goal, and Amorim gave some insight into the player’s progress. He said: “He was struggling [previously]. He can hide that, but I understood that. It is not a surprise the way he responded at Anfield or played today with and without the ball, and that is going to be massive for us.” Cunha has been giving it both barrels since he moved to Old Trafford in the summer and has certainly not been visibly struggling on the pitch so Amorim’s comment may come as a surprise, but the promise of more to come is mouthwatering for fans. Amorim added: “He needs to score goals; he suffers when he doesn’t score, but he is a top player who decides games. “Everything can change really quickly, but if you have that feeling and still feel confident to work, we are going to be a better team.” Featured image Carl Recine via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. 9 duels won, 3 tackles, 3 dribbles: United talisman shone in his new role as changing of the guard continues
Manchester United made it three wins on the bounce thanks to a thrilling 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion. United have long struggled against the Seagulls but went 3-0 up and looked comfortable at Old Trafford today. Brighton pulled two goals back to give Ruben Amorim serious cause for concern, but a last-minute Bryan Mbeumo strike secured the points, and a significant win for the Red Devils. Bruno’s milestone United captain Bruno Fernandes wasn’t able to mark his 300th appearance for the club with a goal or an assist but was still a key player for United. In many ways today’s win felt like a changing of the guard, as a goal from Matheus Cunha and a brace for Mbeumo showed that Amorim’s new number 10s mean business. Fernandes, operating from his now customary deeper role, still got four shots away – two on target, one off target and one blocked – but didn’t need to provide a goal to bail the Red Devils out. He made two key passes, as did Cunha and Mbeumo, and completed three of his five attempted dribbles – only Mbeumo beat his man more often. While it wasn’t recorded as an assist, Fernandes’ dummy for Mbeumo’s emphatic second was the key action which created the goal. Comfortable in new role In an indication of where the game was mostly played Fernandes was United’s most effective defender today, with eight defensive actions. Nobody on his side made more than his three tackles which he supplemented with two interceptions, two clearances and a blocked shot. As is so often the case, the 31-year-old was the heartbeat of his side when in possession. He took 82 touches, 22 more than anyone else in red, and completed 42 of his 49 attempted passes for an 86% completion rate. He was also the most combative in the duel, winning nine of the 16 ground duels he contested, at least two more than any of his team mates. He lost out in both contested aerial duels but was United’s most-fouled player, illegally brought down three times. Stats taken from sofascore. 5 recoveries, 4 ground duels won, 1 assist, 1 goal: United star delivered a throwback masterclass in win vs. Brighton
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro delivered a throwback masterclass, helping his side to a 4-2 win against Brighton and Hove Albion. United beat Brighton Brighton started as the slightly better side at Old Trafford, but it was United who broke the deadlock. Matheus Cunha got on the end of a Casemiro pass and produced an outstanding finish into the bottom corner. It was Cunha’s first goal for United. Casemiro doubled United’s lead not too long after, although he was aided by a huge slice of luck. His shot deflected off a Brighton player before rolling into the back of the net, with Bart Vebruggen well and truly beaten. Bryan Mbeumo extended the lead to 3-0 on the hour with a brilliant left-footed strike, and United appeared to be cruising. However, Brighton hit back with two goals to spark a potential comeback. Danny Welbeck scored a sumptuous free-kick before Charalampos Kostoulas headed home from a corner. But, United had the last laugh, with Mbeumo smashing the ball into the roof of the net in the 97th minute of proceedings. The result has seen the Red Devils move up to fourth place in the Premier League table, just three points adrift of table leaders Arsenal. The Gunners have a game in hand. Casemiro’s performance Beyond his goal and assist, Casemiro was outstanding and his performance rightly earned him a standing ovation at Old Trafford when he was substituted. He successfully found his teammates with 25 of the 32 passes he attempted (78% individual pass accuracy). 15 of his passes were delivered into the opposition half. Casemiro also connected with two of the four long balls he pinged. The Brazilian touched the ball 48 times. He was brilliant defensively, contributing one tackle and twice as many interceptions. He also made one clearance and blocked one shot. Casemiro made five recoveries and won four of the six ground duels he delved into. (Stats obtained from Sofascore) United are back in action next Saturday when they make their way to the City Ground to take on Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest. “Those two will win a lot of football matches:” Gary Neville reckons these players will be key to United’s success following crucial win over Brighton
Manchester United enjoyed a convincing 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday night, producing one of their best attacking displays in recent memory. It was Ruben Amorim’s third win on the trot, his longest winning streak since becoming Man United manager a little under a year ago. But while it was an impressive match from most of the home team’s lineup, former United captain Gary Neville is of the opinion that two players in particular stood out from the pack. The standout stars “I think Mbeumo and Cunha, I think the risk was removed from those signings in the sense that they’ve been in the Premier League before and they’ve got that hunger to deliver a different level,” Neville explained on Sky Sports following the full-time whistle. “There are a lot of things about those signings that you felt more comfortable with,” Neville continued, before singling out Bryan Mbeumo for praise. “I think that Mbeumo looks like he belongs, he looks hungry, he looks like he wants to score goals,” Neville continued. He then layered praise onto both Cunha and Mbeumo alike, declaring, “Those two will win a lot of football matches for this club.” Neville also explained how he reckons United should utilise the two number 10s in order to maximise their results going forward. Recipe for success “If those two can stay up front, live up front in those spaces, the other eight or nine players in the team can just be the foundation for them and sort of keep clean sheets and defend well; those two will win a lot of football matches,” Neville outlined. While this seems to be a lot of pressure to put on the shoulders of just two players, it does seem that they have the talent to pull it off. Mbeumo was clinical with his two goals, while Cunha’s long-range strike proved just how opportunistic he can be, while once again showing his great determination to score goals for United. Needless to say, these two have proven to be highly successful signings, both of whom could play a key role in lifting United to new heights as the season wears on. Referee Anthony Taylor tried his best to help Brighton, but United’s summer signings had other ideas
Most pundits opined Manchester United’s real test after the Anfield triumph was getting the better of Brighton and Hove Albion, a team who has had their number in recent seasons. The Seagulls had six wins out of seven heading into Saturday’s game and the pressure was on Ruben Amorim to get the better of the club’s bogey side. And in front of a full Old Trafford, the Red Devils performed and how, overpowering the team from South Coast 4-2. The win means three wins on the bounce, the first time the team has achieved this feat under the head coach. Referee Anthony Taylor tried his best to ruin the occasion, not giving as many as three penalties to the hosts, while a lot of obvious fouls were also not awarded, much to the dismay of the Old Trafford faithful. Referee did not want United to win Both Amad and Bryan Mbeumo should have been awarded penalties for blatant fouls inside the box, which VAR also surprisingly overlooked. There was a danger of United becoming frustrated as long as the scores remained goalless, but the summer signings had other ideas. Matheus Cunha opened his account for the 20-time English league champions with a brilliant long-ranger. Casemiro then got in on the act before Bryan Mbeumo scored the third from Benjamin Sesko’s assist. The hosts were cruising at that stage, and Amorim made a glut of changes, choosing to hand minutes to fringe stars. That drop-off in momentum allowed Brighton to pounce. Summer signings had other ideas They scored twice, and with six minutes of added time to play, a hush descended upon the Theatre of Dreams. Senne Lammens pulled off a few fine saves to keep United’s slender lead intact. And Mbeumo was also not done yet. He sealed the deal with his second of the game, and as a result, the three-time Champions League winners climbed up to fourth in the Premier League table. Given the amount of criticism Amorim has had to face, the table shows how close United are to the chasing pack. Now the players need to keep this run going so that they can capitalise should the likes of Arsenal, and Manchester City slip up in the weeks to come. 3 shots, 4/5 dribbling, 6/8 ground duels: This United star’s finishing was flawless in 4-2 win over Brighton
Manchester United produced an attacking masterclass as they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2 on Saturday evening. While the visitors almost pulled off a late comeback, Man United refused to allow them to build up too much hope, responding almost immediately with a fourth goal. At the forefront of United’s ruthless attacking display was Bryan Mbeumo. Cool and composed Whenever he got the ball, Mbeumo seemed to have everything under control, no matter how closely he was marked. The Cameroonian completed 34 of his 38 passes (89% accuracy) while making two key passes, yet again showcasing his playmaking ability. He also proved to be an entertaining dribbler, completing four of his five attempted dribbles. Furthermore, he won an impressive six of eight ground duels thanks to his fancy footwork. Interestingly, only six of his 59 touches were considered unsuccessful, proving just how surgical his performance truly was. A surgical finisher Mbeumo’s shooting against Brighton was world-class. He took three shots, one of which, unluckily, hit the woodwork. This ultimately meant that he narrowly missed out on securing a hat-trick, given the two phenomenal goals he scored on the night. Mbeumo’s first goal in the 61st minute showed how quick his feet can be, as he cut into the box and fired a left-footed shot past the keeper. His second goal was just as impressive, coming moments after United conceded. Rather than sitting back to retain their lead, Ruben Amorim’s men burst forward, with Mbeumo hammering his shot past the keeper to clinch his second goal on the night. If there was one lesson to take away from this match, it’s that having a Premier League proven signing such as Mbeumo has certainly paid off for United. This Amorim decision made all the difference as United grabbed a tenacious 3-2 win over Brighton
Manchester United defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2 in what was a highly convincing display. Man United pulled no punches in front of the jubilant Old Trafford crowd, attacking with determination and defending with grit throughout the encounter. Ultimately, it was United’s summer signings who made all the difference, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens putting in highly impactful performances for their new club. Clearly, transfers are something that manager Ruben Amorim has gotten right. First half Given Brighton’s decent form against United in recent games, the hosts appeared to be on high alert, maintaining control of possession and defending well. Then, in the seventh minute, it seemed as if the visitors could have opened the scoring. Former United player Danny Welbeck burst down the right wing, putting a through ball to Yankuba Minteh in the middle, who was virtually one-on-one with the keeper. The Brighton forward hit the ball wide, allowing United to breathe a sigh of relief. The visitors continued to pressure United’s defence. Carlos Baleba, a transfer target of the home side, passed to Welbeck in the centre of the box, whose shot was well saved by Senne Lammens. United replied with a quick counter, only for Amad Diallo’s leg to be clipped in the box. Despite calls for a spot kick, the referee determined that there wasn’t enough in the challenge for a penalty. Matheus Cunha attempted an audacious shot from outside the box that veered just wide of the far post. Suddenly, United’s performance started to look a whole lot more encouraging. A few moments later, Cunha was in the thick of the action yet again, this time threading the ball through to Casemiro, who rushed into the box and slammed his shot into the side netting, albeit from a very tight angle. In the 24th minute, United’s determination paid off. Casemiro returned the favour by supplying Cunha this time, who fired his shot hard and true from the edge of the box past the keeper and into the bottom right corner. A phenomenal first United goal for the Brazilian. On the half-hour mark, Minteh danced past Yoro, seemingly in on goal. Fortunately, Luke Shaw was in his path, allowing Lammens to scoop up the ball. With just 12 minutes left of the half, Casemiro doubled United’s lead. Shaw intercepted the ball in Brighton’s half, with United ready to take full advantage. Casemiro took a shot from outside the box, which was deflected off Jan Paul van Hecke. After some deliberation, the goal was awarded to the Brazilian, with Old Trafford erupting in delight. On the stroke of half-time, Bryan Mbeumo handed Benjamin Sesko a golden opportunity to score, passing him the ball just ten metres from the goal line. Unfortunately, Sesko ballooned his shot over the crossbar. Still, there was little for United to complain about, going into the break with a comfortable two-goal cushion. Second half Following the restart, United looked just as determined to score as they did in the first half. Just four minutes into the second half, United almost scored again when Amad’s pass rebounded off Maxim De Cuyper into the path of Cunha. The Brazilian laid the ball off to Bruno Fernandes, who took a fiery shot, only for Bart Verbruggen to deny his effort. On the hour mark, Mbeumo got in on the action, cutting into the box and taking a left-footed shot that squeezed through the legs of Lewis Dunk and past the keeper. 3-0 to United as they appeared set to cruise to a comfortable victory. Also worth mentioning is that Sesko earned his first assist in the Premier League. Ruben Amorim then decided to make a change, bringing off a tired Luke Shaw for Ayden Heaven. Clearly, Shaw had earned a rest following a strong performance. On the stroke of 70 minutes, Amad was replaced by Patrick Dorgu, while Kobbie Mainoo came on for Casemiro. Mbeumo almost found yet another goal when he took a surgical shot with his first touch, only for the ball to strike the upright. Moments later, Brighton were on the attack, with Minteh getting on the end of a long ball. Dorgu was the last defender separating him and the keeper, with the youngster taking down the Brighton forward with what was a seemingly light challenge. Fortunately for Dorgu, the referee saw it that way, showing Dorgu a yellow card rather than sending him off for potentially preventing a goal-scoring opportunity. Of course, Lammens was already on the ball after Minteh took a heavy touch. Brighton made the most of their consequential free kick, with Welbeck curling a sensational shot into the net. Lammens had no chance of saving that, with the scoreline changing to 3-1. Straight after kick-off, a rejuvenated Brighton were on the attack again, with Watson taking a close-range shot at the bottom left corner that Lammens did brilliantly to catch. With a little less than ten minutes to play, Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte came on for Cunha and Sesko. Seven minutes of stoppage time were announced, meaning United would need to keep their concentration a little longer to secure the win. Shockingly, Brighton pulled another goal back, when Charalampos Kostoulas flicked the ball into the goal from the near post in what was a cheeky header from a corner. Just when it seemed that the visitors could pull off a late shock, United decided against playing it safe. Instead, they burst forward on the attack, with Mbeumo launching another superb strike for United’s fourth goal. The referee blew the full-time whistle on what was an impressive showing by United. Despite a late scare, United continued their fine attacking display to seal a well-deserved victory. Handing Amorim a three-match winning streak – his longest to date – United finally seem to be gelling well under their newest manager. Four things we learnt as Amorim’s United finally seem to be finding their gears
Manchester United welcomed Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Saturday evening. Senne Lammens continued in goal with Leny Yoro replacing Harry Maguire in the defence. Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw started alongside him with Diogo Dalot and Amad in the wingback roles. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro began in the midfield, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the number 10 positions. Benjamin Sesko returned to the starting line up after finding himself on the bench for the match against Liverpool last weekend. Here are four things we learnt from the match. Cunha gets his reward Matheus Cunha has impressed at Old Trafford before but he had not been rewarded with a goal or an assist. The Brazilian lit up the famous old stadium in a pulsating first half where he scored his first goal for the club. It was a wonderful finish, reminiscent of the type of effort he would regularly put away for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazil international was consistently bright and linked up well with his teammates to the delight of the crowd. Cunha also showed his worth defensively, tracking back and putting in an all-round impressive display for the Red Devils. High pressing Much was made of United’s tactics of long balls last weekend at Anfield and the Brighton manager made a point of mentioning that his side were expecting more of the same. The Seagulls were clearly caught out as they routinely failed to deal with a rabid United press. Casemiro’s goal was the result of wonderful closing down by Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt was regularly well up the pitch closing down space. Mbeumo, Amad, Sesko and Cunha also hounded the Brighton defence in an electric first 45 minutes. Luke Shaw on form The England international has had his fair share of critics in recent time. Nonetheless, Ruben Amorim has stuck with him in the absence of Lisandro Martinez as he has been a regular starter for the club this season. Shaw was smart off the ball and made two or three key interceptions that blocked Brighton from possibly scoring in the first half. If the 30 year old can keep up this sort of form, he certainly has something to offer at Old Trafford in the present and the future. Bryan Mbeumo is the heartbeat of the attack All of United’s four summer signings played their part today but Mbeumo continues to be the heartbeat of the attack. He scored the crucial opener at Anfield last week and banged in his fourth of the season to kill the game against the Seagulls. Brighton fought back but it was Mbeumo who grabbed his second of the game to finally put away the visitors. It isn’t just his goals though, it is the Cameroonian’s ability to knit play together and his growing understanding with his teammates that will only excite Old Trafford further.
