European giants desperate to sign promising United forward, considering offering high-profile star in January swap deal – report

Benjamin Sesko’s promising start to life at Manchester United has made things difficult for another young forward at the club.

Signed from RB Leipzig in a deal worth around £74 million, the 22-year-old striker has established himself as Ruben Amorim’s first-choice striker without much hassle.

The Slovenian has two league goals to his name and his all-round game has been exceptional. As such, he is unlikely to lose the starting spot anytime soon, and Joshua Zirkzee might have to wait a while for his first start of the season.

Zirkzee lacking minutes at Man United

Despite Zirkzee’s underwhelming output, United turned down approaches from Serie A for the technically proficient striker, who impressed as a wide playmaker last term.

However, the arrival of Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo has made him surplus to requirements.

The 24-year-old has made just four appearances this campaign and was an unused substitute in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Clubs in Italy remain keen on the ex-Bologna star and are expected to make a move for him in January.

Juventus determined to sign Zirkzee

According to Tutto Juve, Juventus and AC Milan and likely to go head-to-head for the services of Zirkzee, who is “still highly sought-after” in Italy.

It is understood the Netherlands international’s exit is “increasingly likely” with a number of Serie A clubs, including Como, monitoring his situation at Old Trafford.

Juventus could reportedly propose a swap deal involving Dušan Vlahović, whose contract in Turin is due to expire at the end of the season.

The prolific Serbian striker is certainly an upgrade on Zirkzee, having scored 21 goals since the start of last campaign.

Considering Sesko’s age, a reliable forward to shoulder the goalscoring burden would be good for Amorim’s side. However, United may balk at Vlahović’s wage cost.

United have to be patient with this Erik ten Hag signing, he will light up Old Trafford in time – opinion

Manchester United were looking to solve their goalscoring woes when they signed Joshua Zirkzee in the summer of 2024.

The Dutchman was coming off a breakthrough campaign with Bologna, having registered 12 goals and seven assists from 37 games. The Red Devils reportedly paid around £36m for his signature that summer.

A tall, right-footed striker with silky skills, Zirkzee was expected to take the Premier League by storm. The 24 year old came off the bench against Fulham for his debut and scored in the 1-0 win, sending fans into a frenzy.

Unfortunately, Zirkzee failed to build on that blistering start and faded as the season progressed.

Zirkzee’s struggles at Old Trafford

Zirkzee has struggled for consistency at the Theatre of Dreams, dividing opinion among fans and critics. He has shown flashes of brilliance, as evidenced by his brace against Everton in December and his composed penalty kick against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

However, the player managed just three goals from 32 games in the Premier League last season, frustrating fans, and was even booed off by a section of the crowd at Old Trafford last December.

The Dutchman missed the final weeks of last season after picking up a thigh injury, which didn’t help his cause either.

United, meanwhile, invested heavily in Benjamin Sesko over the summer, and the Slovenian has been selected ahead of Zirkzee so far. The Dutchman, meanwhile, is yet to pick up a goal or an assist from four appearances this season, all of which were from the bench.

Recent reports have linked Zirkzee with an exit from Old Trafford in 2026, with Juventus ready to take him back to Serie A. However, United would be better advised to be patient with the Dutchman, who is yet to show his true form at Old Trafford

A striker with a creative edge

Zirkzee is a creative centre-forward who mixes the qualities of a central striker with the vision of a playmaker. While the Dutchman is traditionally a No. 9, he is also excellent in a withdrawn role as a No. 10, where his close control make him a menace for the opposition.

Despite his tall frame, Zirkzee is not a physical striker; instead, he prefers to be involved in the buildup play. He is intelligent in the final third and can work very well in tight places.

The former Bologna man has struggled to cope with the physicality of the Premier League, but offloading him right now may not be the best idea.

Financial implications of Zirkzee’s exit

Sesko and Zirkzee are the only recognized strikers in Ruben Amorim’s squad at the moment. If United allow the Dutchman to leave, they will be a man short in attack unless a new striker is brought in, which is likely to be a costly operation.

Meanwhile, the former Bologna man’s stock is at an all-time low at the moment, so his suitors are unlikely to break the bank for his signature.

Zirkzee is comfortable as a No. 10, so he could also cover for Matheus Cunha in the attack if required. His presence gives the Red Devils another option in attack with a long and testing season ahead, especially given Mason Mount’s injury record.

If the Premier League giants plan to offload the Dutchman, they may have to sign not one but two new faces to replace him.

Premier League proven attackers are likely to cost a fortune, while there’s no guarantee that the new signings will hit the ground running at the Theatre of Dreams.

Instead, helping Zirkzee regain his mojo is perhaps the safest bet for United at the moment.

Room for growth

Zirkzee only turned 24 in May this year and is yet to hit his peak. Some of his issues could be resolved with age and experience, especially since he has only spent a year in the Premier League.

Many famous strikers of the past have taken time to reach world class levels, so it would be unwise to rule out the Dutchman just yet. Didier Drogba was 25 years old when he caught the eye of Chelsea in 2004, and the best goalscoring season of his career arrived when he was in his 30s.

Zirkzee wasn’t the finished product when he arrived at Old Trafford, and he hasn’t reached his peak yet. Once he comes to terms with the rigours of English football, the Dutchman could become a valuable asset for the Red Devils.

His ability to hold up play and work in tight spaces complements the runners in the team, bringing deep-lying playmakers like Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in the game. His intelligent movement also keeps the opposition centre-backs occupied and opens up space in the final third for wingbacks to exploit.

Zirkzee’s versatility even makes it easy to shift in-game tactics depending on the opposition. Having him around, as such, will work to United’s benefit.

Deserves his chance at redemption

Ruben Amorim’s system at United requires a striker who is involved in link-up plays. Zirkzee, as such, is a natural fit in the job, and the only thing lacking is, perhaps, a little self-belief.

The Dutchman has failed to find his footing at the Theatre of Dreams, but in truth, he has been part of a struggling team dealing with multiple issues.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that the player will turn things around, and his critics will say that he is more suited to Serie A than the Premier League.

However, United have lived to rue their decision to allow key players to leave in the past; one only needs to look at Scott McTominay. Zirkzee’s departure could also turn out to be the wrong decision in time.

Thiago Motto once called the Dutchman the “Symbol of Bologna” following his exploits at the Emilia-Romagna club. Zirkzee has all the ingredients to become United’s talisman as well, and it is now time to help him flourish.

Ruben Amorim recorded a victory in his 50th game as head coach of Manchester United.

The 2-0 win at Old Trafford against Sunderland in the Premier League was the perfect way to commemorate the milestone, thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko in the first half.

But the triumph also broke a duck no United boss since Sir Alex Ferguson has managed to overcome.

Amorim is the first manager to win his 50th match in charge of United since Ferguson, who achieved the same feat back in November 1987 away at Bury, according to stats from Opta.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag were all tripped up when reaching the same juncture in their Reds careers, but the Portuguese incumbent avoided the same fate.

Ruben has admitted that results since he joined the club in November last year have not been up to the standard he expects, but our win against the Black Cats is our third consecutive top-flight triumph at home, which we last managed between April and August 2023.

It also extended another record: we have now gone unbeaten in our last 24 Premier League games against newly promoted sides, 21 of those being wins.

That stretches back to November 2021, with Watford being the last top-tier newcomer to overcome the Reds on that day – they were also the last promoted team to stop the Reds scoring in our 0-0 draw in February 2022.

January will provide a big test for that run, when we travel to Leeds United and Burnley consecutively within the space of a week.

For now, however, after celebrating a positive milestone-hitting outing, attention will quickly turn to a testing Anfield trip to face Liverpool in our next league assignment.

Lammens named Man of the Match on debut

Sunday 05 October 2025 11:00

Senne Lammens enjoyed a solid Manchester United debut in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

The Reds goalkeeper made his first appearance for the club since his summer move from Belgian side Royal Antwerp, and played a big role in securing United’s first clean sheet of the season.

His contribution on the afternoon was recognised by the fans in the stands and, since then, Lammens has been picked by supporters as our Man of the Match in the poll on ManUtd.com and the United App.

The 23-year-old garnered a majority 29 per cent of the vote for a strong all-round performance between United’s sticks, which featured a notable save either side of half-time.

In the closing stages of the first 45 minutes, Senne watched a powerful long-range strike from Granit Xhaka like a hawk before diving to his left to parry the fierce attempt away from his goal.

Then, after the break, Lammens came up big again to preserve his clean sheet just before the clock struck 90 minutes. In front of the Stretford End, he stood tall before keeping out a goalbound attempt from Chemsdine Talbi with his left foot.

Those are the moments that will have made it into the highlights packages, but the Belgian’s debut display was also commendable in several other areas too.

He gave us a glimpse of how he can command his box when claiming crosses and by organising his defenders vocally, while his distribution and passing with both feet was also notable.

Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt was straight over to give his goalkeeper a hug at the full-time whistle, the first of several Reds to congratulate Senne on his maiden outing during the post-match celebrations.

Later on, his boss Ruben Amorim called the shot-stopper’s showing “a very good performance”, while former Red and MUTV pundit said Lammens will be “absolutely delighted with the way he’s played.”

Lammens was a deserving winner of the fans’ Man of the Match award, although he only just pipped Benjamin Sesko to the prize, another summer signing who had a very good day.

The Slovenian striker netted United’s second goal – his first at Old Trafford – to give the Reds some breathing room, and was a focal point throughout the afternoon.

Sesko accumulated 25 per cent of the vote – just four per cent behind his goalkeeper – while Mason Mount, the scorer of our first goal, came third in the poll with 18 per cent.

Thank you to everyone who voted.

3 key passes, 8 duels won: United loanee stands up tall for loan side in spite of defeat

Manchester United had numerous youngsters in action on loan throughout the Football League on Saturday.

To follow where all of United’s academy players are playing, click here.

Habeeb Ogunneye

Ogunneye played the entire 90 minutes of Newport County’s 0-1 defeat to Swindon Town.

He won an impressive seven out of his nine ground duels and an interception.

The fullback completed both his dribble attempts and also four out of his six long ball attempts on a decent showing for his side.

Ethan Ennis

The young attacker was impressive in spite of Fleetwood Town’s 0-2 defeat to Cheltenham Town.

He played 75 minutes of action and had one shot on and off target.

Ennis also made three key passes and created one big chance for his team to score.

He was also effective in his duels winning four ground battles and four aerial contests in an all-round positive display.

Toby Collyer

The midfielder made his first start for West Bromwich Albion but unfortunately it came in a disappointing 0-3 defeat to Millwall.

In his 79 minutes on the pitch, he made 87% of his passes.

Collyer also won five out of his seven ground duels and two out of his three aerial duels.

The midfielder also made four tackles in a strong midfield performance in spite of the defeat.

Harry Amass

The left back suffered a horrible afternoon as his Sheffield Wednesday side lost 0-5 to Coventry City at home.

He made 81% of his passes but could not complete any of his four crosses. Amass completed his only dribble attempt and won three out of his five aerial battles.

Amass did struggle on the deck though, only winning three out of 12 ground duels.

Radek Vitek

The Czech keeper was on the losing side as his Bristol City team lost 1-2 to Queen’s Park Rangers.

He failed to make any saves in the match and conceded two goals.

Vitek did make one high claim and won his only aerial duel.

Ethan Wheatley

The United forward endured a terrible afternoon as he was subbed off after just 45 minutes in Northampton Town’s 0-0 draw with Port Vale.

He had no shots of any kind and could not complete any of his three dribble attempts.

Wheatley could only complete six passes and was horrendous in his duels.

The forward lost all five of his ground duels and six of his seven aerial contests.

Shock reunion on the cards as Amorim ready to ditch United veteran who was a revelation last season – report

Manchester United’s disastrous defeat to Brentford last week brought about a few changes for Saturday’s game against Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Back came Casemiro into the middle of the park, while Amad returned to start on the right. Interestingly, Ruben Amorim also recalled Leny Yoro in place of Harry Maguire.

The Englishman struggled against the Bees, but the Frenchman was a class apart against the Black Cats as United romped home to a 2-0 win.

The England international, who had won the head coach over last term and even earned a new deal, has started only twice in the Premier League this season, and with his contract up next summer, question marks regarding his future remain.

Maguire’s future up in the air

The Red Devils refused to sell him to interested suitors this summer, but plenty of outlets have claimed that INEOS will not be extending his stay at Old Trafford beyond the current season.

And now, The Daily Star has claimed United’s current stance has attracted Saudi Pro League sides to the table with Al-Nassr and Al-Ettifaq ready to pounce on the soon-to-be free agent.

The former club captain will be free to open contract talks with foreign clubs post-January, and it will be interesting to see how all of this ultimately pans out.

“Harry Maguire could be set for a surprising switch to the Saudi Pro League. The Manchester United defender’s contract expires in June, and he has caught the attention of Saudi clubs Al-Nassr and Al-Ettifaq.

Reunion on the cards

“The England centre-back will be free to negotiate with other clubs when we hit January 1. If he leaves United on a free transfer next summer, Maguire could demand substantial wages should he opt to join the Pro-League.

“It’s believed that United bosses are unlikely to offer Maguire a new contract this summer to keep him at Old Trafford.”

A move to Al-Nassr would see the centre-back reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo, and given it is likely to be his last contract, it could potentially be a very lucrative one.

In the past, Harry Maguire had spoken of his desire to stay, but the ball remains in Amorim and INEOS’ court. If they decide he is not good enough to start regularly, moving him on would make the most sense.

And links with Jarrad Branthwaite have re-emerged, lending credence to the above links.

What Amorim told “the best talent United’s academy has ever seen” now revealed, fans will be super excited – report

Saturday’s win over Sunderland will have helped relieve some of the pressure on Ruben Amorim following Manchester United’s dismal start to the new season.

One of the biggest criticisms faced by the head coach is his reluctance to tweak his system and adapt to the players at his disposal.

And this season, the Portuguese tactician has surprisingly overlooked the academy, which he had trusted immensely the previous term.

Sending Harry Amass out on loan perplexed quite a few people, while Chido Obi’s absence has also raised eyebrows.

Rise of JJ Gabriel

However, one Carrington wonderkid who has caught the former Sporting CP boss’ eye is JJ Gabriel. He is 14 and is already setting the stage alight with his performances for the U18s this season.

So impressed has Amorim been with him that he met him personally and even promised to call him to train with the first team on occasions this season.

He is in line to become the youngest-ever Premier League debutant, and The Manchester Evening News detailed what transpired when the Portuguese spent time with the England U15 international.

Dubbed “the best talent United’s academy has ever seen”, Amorim explained his system and his philosophy to the young attacker, while also explaining the need to have a strong work ethic at his age.

Amorim recounted his experiences with former United legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who was known to arrive first to training while being the last to leave.

“United know they have a special talent on their hands and recently introduced Gabriel to Ruben Amorim. During their exchange, Amorim spent time discussing his philosophy and stressed the importance of working hard, even recalling an anecdote about Cristiano Ronaldo as an example.

Interaction with Amorim

“Amorim played alongside Ronaldo for Portugal’s national team. The United boss recounted stories about Ronaldo’s work ethic – he was the first to report for training and the last to leave.

“Gabriel does not lack a work ethic. He is already living like a dedicated professional athlete with his diet and recovery sessions, and wakes up at 6am most days to make his dream a reality.”

Thankfully, JJ Gabriel’s work ethic is also top-notch. United have him for two years, but lots of clubs are on his tail.

Darren Fletcher, his U18s coach, is helping him hone his game even further by playing him up top. INEOS will need to convince him to stay and prove his worth at Old Trafford. A first-team debut would do nicely.

United make surprise contact to sign 33-yo CL winner, January loan deal being considered – report

Manchester United remain interested in signing a new goalkeeper for Ruben Amorim, as per reports.

After Andre Onana’s disastrous performance against Grimsby Town in the League Cup very early in the season, United stepped up their efforts to find a new shot-stopper.

Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp on deadline day in a deal worth €25million, including add-ons. Meanwhile, Onana was shipped out on loan to Trabzonspor.

Amorim is yet to settle on his preferred goalkeeper, handing opportunities to both Altay Bayindir and Lammens to stake a claim. Amid this uncertainty, a report in Spain suggests the Premier League giants recently made a move for a high-profile goalie.

Manchester United interested in Ter Stegen

According to Catalan publication SPORT, United are among the clubs to have approached Barcelona over a potential deal to sign Marc-André ter Stegen.

The six-time La Liga winner, who was also part of the Blaugrana’s Champions League-winning side in 2015, is currently sidelined with a back injury and is expected to return to full fitness by the end of November.

However, Joan Garcia, who joined Barca from Espanyol in the summer, has instantly established himself as Hansi Flick’s first-choice goalkeeper and a fan favourite with his solid performances between the sticks.

As such, Ter Stegen’s future is up in the air, and the German might have already played his last game for the La Liga giants.

It is claimed United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all enquired about the 33-year-old star.

With the World Cup on the horizon, Ter Stegen could reportedly consider leaving the club despite his initial desire to see out the remaining two and a half years of his contract.

Most of his suitors are interested in signing him in a loan deal with an option to buy. It is understood all scenarios are on the table at the moment, and Barcelona would be open to sanctioning an exit if the player requests to leave in January.

Lammens makes promising debut

Ter Stegen is certainly an appealing target, owing to his experience. However, United would be better off placing faith in Lammens.

The highly-rated Belgian made an assured debut in United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

The 23-year-old’s confident cross-claiming and multiple brilliant saves at Old Trafford helped the Red Devils record their first clean sheet of the season and a much-needed win.

“Not in the frame”: David Ornstein rules out big-name manager from the race to replace Ruben Amorim at United

Ruben Amorim will feel a lot relaxed after Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, but his situation at the club remains fragile. The Portuguese head coach arrived at the Theatre of Dreams last November as Erik ten Hag’s replacement, but has struggled to live up to expectations.

The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season, scoring just 44 goals in 38 league games while losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

INEOS, though, opted to keep their trust in Amorim, who had worked wonders with Sporting CP in his four-year stay at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Premier League giants invested heavily in the squad over the summer, signing Premier League proven attackers in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Benjamin Sesko was brought in for a big fee from RB Leipzig, while Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.

The results, sadly, have failed to improve.

United have struggled this season

United have shown improvements in their performances this season, but have struggled for consistency. The win against Sunderland was their third from eight games in all competitions this campaign.

With the team already out of the EFL Cup, Amorim remains under pressure at Old Trafford, and speculation is ripe regarding his future.

Recent reports have named Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, and former England manager Gareth Southgate as options for the job.

Acclaimed journalist David Ornstein has now provided an update on the Portuguese head coach’s future.

INEOS want Amorim to succeed

Speaking on NBC Sports Soccer ahead of Saturday’s game, Ornstein stated that United are not planning to sack Amorim at the moment.

“Ruben Amorim is under major pressure, but I think most of that pressure is applied on him by himself, as well as the burden of being Manchester United manager,” said Ornstein.

“But Manchester United themselves, as I understand it, they’re not planning to sack him. They don’t want or intend to, and I don’t think he’s planning to walk away from this last season.

“I think he is really feeling the strain. And people I speak to says he was questioning whether he could succeed there. But I do think, sort of incrementally, they feel there is a bit of improvement there, however small so far this season, especially with some of the new signings.

“And it is still very early, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as minority owner, but with sporting control, is at the heart of this. He’s heavily involved [in wanting him to succeed].”

Ornstein went on to add that Southgate is not in the running to replace Amorim at the Theatre of Dreams. He said: “People have talked about shortlists. I don’t know of there being a shortlist to replace him.”

“Of course, Man Utd will always be looking at options like every club and aware of the markets, whether it be on an interim basis, longer term, or even after the World Cup in the summer of 2026, but I’m assured that Gareth Southgate is not in the frame for the Manchester United job should it become available.”

“We’re 100% behind the gaffer”: United hero’s words will delight Amorim following Sunderland masterclass

Manchester United were expected to have a tough time against high-flying Sunderland, but that did not prove to be the case at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils eased to a 2-0 win, thanks to first-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko. Debutant Senne Lammens also excelled in goal.

Ruben Amorim’s decision to hand Mount a start in place of Matheus Cunha proved to be a masterstroke, with the Englishman scoring the first with a sumptuous finish.

And the Slovenian was in top form against the Black Cats, with his back-to-goal play and predatory instinct in the box impressing one and all.

Backing the gaffer

A lot has been spoken about the Portuguese tactician’s flawed system, with plenty of media outlets claiming that INEOS are looking at multiple managers should they be forced to cut ties with the ex-Sporting CP boss.

Amorim even claimed that his players were getting swayed by the constant negativity in the media, but Mason Mount came out fighting in his coach’s corner.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, the ex-Chelsea midfielder revealed that the team was a 100 percent behind Amorim despite the poor start to the season.

“We’re 100% behind the gaffer. We’ve had some results that hurt us – the team, the staff and the fans – but that was important today.

Building momentum

“It was an exciting game, we enjoyed it. The first-half performance, up 2-0, really helped us. The second half we wanted to push on for more but the result was the most important thing. Happy with three points.”

The versatile midfielder claimed that the team’s focus will be on trying to build up a head of steam and try to get successive wins under their belt.

“It needs to be – we thought after Chelsea it would be the start of something and then we go to Brentford and have a disappointing result.

“It starts today and we’ll be working hard over the break. We want to get back-to-back wins, then three in a row and push on for the top four.”

On the goal

His goal was a thing of beauty, the way he controlled the ball and caressed it into the back of the net amid an onrushing group of Sunderland defenders was majestic to say the least.

Speaking to MUTV, Mason Mount said, “It was a very good feeling getting on the scoresheet, first goal at home in the Premier League – it’s been a long time coming. Hopefully a few more to come now.

“Whenever I play, I want to get on the scoresheet, I want to help the lads around me and bring that energy on to the pitch.

“As it’s coming across, the ball just looks like it’s in slow-motion, as you take the touch, all I remember is seeing the defender coming towards me and I just had to try and use him. Lucky enough, it went in. It was a really good feeling.”

He is showing why Amorim loves him so much, now for him to stay fit and keep up the same level of performance week-in and week-out.
