United make surprise contact to sign 33-yo CL winner, January loan deal being considered – report

Manchester United remain interested in signing a new goalkeeper for Ruben Amorim, as per reports.

After Andre Onana’s disastrous performance against Grimsby Town in the League Cup very early in the season, United stepped up their efforts to find a new shot-stopper.

Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp on deadline day in a deal worth €25million, including add-ons. Meanwhile, Onana was shipped out on loan to Trabzonspor.

Amorim is yet to settle on his preferred goalkeeper, handing opportunities to both Altay Bayindir and Lammens to stake a claim. Amid this uncertainty, a report in Spain suggests the Premier League giants recently made a move for a high-profile goalie.

Manchester United interested in Ter Stegen

According to Catalan publication SPORT, United are among the clubs to have approached Barcelona over a potential deal to sign Marc-André ter Stegen.

The six-time La Liga winner, who was also part of the Blaugrana’s Champions League-winning side in 2015, is currently sidelined with a back injury and is expected to return to full fitness by the end of November.

However, Joan Garcia, who joined Barca from Espanyol in the summer, has instantly established himself as Hansi Flick’s first-choice goalkeeper and a fan favourite with his solid performances between the sticks.

As such, Ter Stegen’s future is up in the air, and the German might have already played his last game for the La Liga giants.

It is claimed United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all enquired about the 33-year-old star.

With the World Cup on the horizon, Ter Stegen could reportedly consider leaving the club despite his initial desire to see out the remaining two and a half years of his contract.

Most of his suitors are interested in signing him in a loan deal with an option to buy. It is understood all scenarios are on the table at the moment, and Barcelona would be open to sanctioning an exit if the player requests to leave in January.

Lammens makes promising debut

Ter Stegen is certainly an appealing target, owing to his experience. However, United would be better off placing faith in Lammens.

The highly-rated Belgian made an assured debut in United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

The 23-year-old’s confident cross-claiming and multiple brilliant saves at Old Trafford helped the Red Devils record their first clean sheet of the season and a much-needed win.
