Bruno Fernandes willing to extend stay at United on one key condition – report

Manchester United are preparing for a blockbuster summer transfer window, during which they are expected to invest heavily in the squad once again. The Red Devils are third in the Premier League after 34 games and are close to securing Champions League football for next season. The English giants have turned over a new leaf since the arrival of caretaker manager Michael Carrick in January. The Englishman has masterminded a run of nine wins and two defeats in his 13 games in charge so far, and is in the running for the full-time job as well. United have rediscovered their former swagger under Carrick, who appears to have rejuvenated a team that had been held back by former head coach Ruben Amorim’s rigid 3-4-3 formation. The Red Devils have enjoyed solidity at the back after switching to a back four, while they have also scored 24 goals under the Englishman. While the entire team has improved, the player who stands out the most is Bruno Fernandes. Reinstated in his favoured No. 10 position by Carrick, the Portuguese maestro has been in the form of his life of late and is now on the brink of creating history. The Premier League’s assist record on the line On Monday, Fernandes set up Benjamin Sesko to score United’s second of the night in a pulsating 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford. In the process, the Portuguese picked up his 19th league assist of the campaign. He is now one short of the Premier League assist record set by Thierry Henry and equalled by Kevin De Bruyne, and has four games to etch his name in history. Fernandes has registered eight goals and 20 assists in all competitions in 33 appearances this season, all but one of which have been starts. United next face Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend, followed by games against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton & Hove Albion. Picking up two assists in those fixtures could help Fernandes set a new record. Fernandes’ contract expires in just over a year, and a previous report relayed by The Peoples Person states that United are planning to tie their skipper down to a new deal. An update on the player’s future has now arrived. Fernandes wants assurances from United According to The Telegraph, United are keen for Fernandes to stay, but the player wants assurances before committing his future at Old Trafford. The report states: “Manchester United are determined to keep Bruno Fernandes this summer but their captain wants assurances over the club’s ambitions. Old Trafford officials have made it abundantly clear to the Portugal midfielder that he is a vital part of their plans.” Fernandes reportedly has a £56.3 million release clause in his deal that is active until July this year. That has added further intrigue to his future ahead of the summer. The report insists that the Red Devils are hoping that their desire to build a squad fit to win trophies will help convince their talismanic skipper, adding: “Fernandes has made clear his desire to win the Premier League and Champions League and sources close to the player believe he wants reassurances about United’s ambitions.” “It is unclear at this stage if Fernandes is waiting to see how United’s transfer plans unfold. But the club hope their aim to build a squad that can compete for the biggest trophies will resonate with their captain and talisman.” United are expected to reinforce the midfield this summer to offset Casemiro’s departure, and Ugarte’s possible sale. The report, however, adds that INEOS could sign three new midfielders this year. Final Thoughts While Fernandes will turn 32 in September, his recent performances suggest that he still has a lot of football left in him. The Portuguese has an impeccable fitness record and has shown no signs of slowing down, so fans will hope that INEOS can convince him to extend his stay. Bruno Fernandes has created 114 chances in the Premier League this season. It’s his equal second most creative season to date, only in 22/23 did he create more chances (119). Rio Ferdinand believes this one thing will unleash true potential of Carrick’s side, fans should be excited – report

A Manchester United win over Liverpool this weekend would guarantee the Red Devils a Champions League 2026-27 spot with three games to spare. From merely hoping to finish in the European spots under Ruben Amorim to bringing Champions League football back to Old Trafford, caretaker head coach Michael Carrick has done a brilliant job at United. The United legend has taken a squad that was considered weak and below par and has turned them into a side playing like warriors. United have now reclaimed their competitive edge. In 13 games under Carrick, they have recorded nine wins, two draws, and two losses. As impressive as they have been, playing as though they mean it, there is a growing push for Ineos to go ahead and hand Carrick the permanent role. However, the United chiefs still feel there are factors to weigh up before appointing the ultimate Amorim heir. And while they continue to deliberate over whether Carrick is the man or if they pursue another route, Rio Ferdinand has given them more to ponder. Ferdinand on why Carrick deserves a chance Firmly backing Carrick for the job, the legendary United defender makes a compelling case for why his former teammate, if given the opportunity, will impress. Ferdinand, while explaining what a pre-season under Carrick could do for this squad, says via his YouTube channel: “I just want you to understand that a pre-season is such a defining moment for everything that happens in the season. From a player’s perspective, if you miss a pre-season, it’s horrendous. “As a team, to be able to implement ideas and start getting things into the system, into the mindset of players as to how you want to approach the season, how you want things to go. Michael Carrick hasn’t had a pre-season. “He’s had time on the training ground, yes, because there haven’t been many midweek games. So, I understand that. But pre-seasons are imperative. I think he’s done enough to earn the right to have a pre-season and have a shot at a pre-season. Minimum.” Manchester United pre‑season fixtures 2026 DateFixture 18 JulyManchester United vs Wrexham 24 JulyRosenborg vs Manchester United 1 AugustAtlético Madrid vs Manchester United 8 AugustManchester United vs PSG 12 AugustManchester United vs Leeds 15 AugustManchester United vs AC Milan Drawing from Ferdinand’s argument, what we may have witnessed so far is merely a glimpse of what Carrick can truly do with this team, and that is an exciting prospect. Carrick plus brilliant signings In fact, one might add that with a proper summer 2026 transfer window behind him, if Carrick continues on this trajectory, United should be mounting a serious challenge for their 21st league title. That said, whether Carrick gets the job remains uncertain, but clarity will come soon enough on whether the former midfielder is handed the reins at Old Trafford. Brighton are expected to demand in excess of £90m if Man Utd make another approach for Carlos Baleba this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The Cameroon international is believed to be still keen on a switch to Old Trafford, but his form has taken a nosedive this season, and it was assumed that Brighton would make him available for a lower price. However, Jacobs says United may still need to pay more than the £75m they informally offered the Seagulls for Baleba last year: “If Manchester United return, the player’s open to the move. At the time, Manchester United were the only ones mentioning numbers, and they said £75million to Brighton and they were told not for sale with no counter and no price, and Brighton’s belief at that time was that Baleba could effectively, without giving numbers, be like Moises Caicedo and potentially with a good season, get into British transfer record territory.” “Now it’s a little bit different because you could make an argument, certainly Manchester United will, that Baleba’s value has decreased from 12 months ago, and this is why Manchester United at around the £50million to £60million price point would be willing to return and potentially consider that deal.” “But Brighton sources have told me anything that begins with a five, a six, and very possibly a seven or an eight is not going to be engaged with. So Baleba is still going to fall into an expensive category if Manchester United want to proceed, but he’s one of several options.” Man Utd won’t pay that much for Baleba £90m would seem excessive for a midfielder who has only started 20 Premier League games this season. Baleba is clearly a player who is well-liked by Director of Football Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team, but they are not going to pay well over the odds for the midfielder. You would expect them to move on to alternatives if Brighton don’t lower their demands. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is seen as a top option, along with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, but neither deal is likely to be straightforward. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Wolves’s Joao Gomes, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller are also on the club’s radar, along with Baleba. Want more news on Man Utd? Marcus Rashford’s ‘New Destination’ Revealed As Barcelona Transfer Dream Is Dashed

BACK David Tully Apr 29th 2026 Barcelona are very unlikely to keep Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford beyond his loan spell at the Camp Nou, according to reports. There have been suggestions that the La Liga club are hoping to secure him on loan for a second consecutive season, rather than trigger their €30m (£26m) release clause. However, Catalan newspaper Sport claim that the chances of Rashford remaining are extremely slim, despite having scored 3 goals in his last 4 league games. It is believed that a “new destination” is now on the cards for the England international. Where could Rashford end up? Tottenham are thought to be the team likeliest to come forward at the end of the season, if the 28-year-old’s dream move to Barcelona does collapse. Of course, any deal for Rashford would be contingent on Spurs staying in the Premier League. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are currently in the relegation places, two points away from safety with four games left to play. Reports suggest that they will secure another signing, Bournemouth’s Marco Senesi, on a free transfer, but only if they retain their top-flight status, so it appears a similar arrangement could be put in place for Rashford. Is there a chance that he could stay at Man Utd? Sport don’t think that Rashford will be returning to Old Trafford even if Barca don’t secure his signature. The fact that the club have loaned out the player for two successive seasons indicates that there is no way back for him. OF course, things could change. It has been reported that interim boss Michael Carrick would like to keep Rashford, but even if he does become the permanent head coach, there is no guarantee such a U-turn is possible. There is a lot of water under the bridge. Rashford doesn’t seem keen on staying at United, and the club’s hierarchy have washed their hands of him too. Want more news on Man Utd? Man Utd “are not actively pursuing” Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Julian Brandt, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 29-year-old, who has scored 11 goals and contributed 4 assists this season, will become a free agent this summer, with reports in Germany suggesting the Red Devils are among his suitors. However, Romano played down those rumours: “For Julian Brandt, also, there is a lot of movement, and for sure, he’s going to leave Borussia Dortmund, so an interesting name to follow.” “According to some reports, there is also Manchester United involved. But I’m told at the moment, Man United are not actively pursuing this deal for Julian Brandt.” Brandt could still end up moving to the Premier League While the German international is not expected to make the switch to Old Trafford, Arsenal are said to be keen on securing his services. Man Utd have made “background checks” on Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, according to The Telegraph‘s James Ducker. The journalist is usually pretty reliable when it comes to the Red Devils, and he says that the club have been keeping close tabs on the Brazilian, as well as another centre-back, Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven. Murillo and van de Ven are both left-footed, and it is believed that if United do choose to strengthen the middle of defence, they will pick a player with a similar profile. Ducker does, however, claim that a move for a centre-half is not top of Jason Wilcox’s agenda, with the midfield set to be prioritised. Murillo could be priced out of a move Other Premier League teams, including Liverpool and Chelsea, have also been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old, and there were suggestions that the player could be available for around £50m this summer if Forest are relegated from the top flight. However, the Tricky Trees took a big leap towards safety with a 5-0 win away against Sunderland on Friday night. Murillo could, therefore, end up costing considerably more, which may put off United and other suitors.
