Man Utd: £1.8m PL star ‘100%’ better than Ratcliffe signing amid ‘huge mistake’ – ‘doesn’t do stupid things’

    man-utd:-1.8m-pl-star-‘100%’-better-than-ratcliffe-signing-amid-‘huge-mistake’-–-‘doesn’t-do-stupid-things’

A Dutch journalist claims a centre-back at Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion is “100%” better than Manchester United star Matthijs de Ligt.

Man Utd paid around £185m on signings in the summer and they invested an initial fee of £43m to sign De Ligt from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

As the Netherlands international progressed through the ranks at Ajax, he was tipped to become one of the best centre-backs in the world. His form for the Eredivisie giants earned him a move to Juventus, but he stagnated in Italy and struggled at Bayern Munich.

De Ligt endured a difficult start to this campaign for Man Utd, but his form has picked up in recent games alongside centre-back partner Lisandro Martinez.

The 25-year-old will likely play a big part under new head coach Ruben Amorim as Jamie Carragher expects him to start in a back three.

Carragher expects De Ligt to play in the middle of a back three with Leny Yoro (right) and Martinez (left) at either side of him.

Explaining his decision to pick Alejandro Garnacho and Noussair Mazraoui as wing-backs, he said:  “I go to the setup and I’ve almost gone for one attacking full-back on one side [Mazraoui] and Garnacho on the other because when you look at his set-up at Sporting, these players are asked to be really high like wingers.”

However, Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has admitted he’s been more impressed with Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke, who joined the Premier League side for around £1.8m from NAC Breda in 2020.

Van Hecke has had loan spells at Heerenbeen and Blackburn Rovers but has established himself as a regular for Brighton in the Premier League.

After making 39 appearances across all competitions last season, Van Hecke made his senior debut for the Netherlands in September and Driessen reckons he’s “100%” better than De Ligt.

Driessen said: “Liverpool were really outplayed in the first half.

“Brighton played really great. That Van Hecke… When you see him in the build-up, how calm he remains… He did almost everything right.

“Yes, 100% (he’s better than De Ligt). On the ball anyway. He doesn’t need any fouls; he doesn’t do really stupid things. I thought Matthijs de Ligt was a lot better yesterday against Chelsea than in the previous matches, but he did make a huge mistake just before the end.

“Literally. He slipped, which almost put Chelsea at 1-2. But for the rest he held his own quite well. But I really liked Van Hecke, yes.”

Ashworth has picked perfect signing for Amorim’s 3-4-3, United tried to sign him for Ten Hag too – report

Manchester United are reportedly set to revisit their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite following Ruben Amorim’s appointment.

After a nervy start to his United career, Matthijs de Ligt, whom Erik ten Hag recruited from Bayern Munich over the summer, has looked a lot more comfortable at the back in recent outings.

Meanwhile, Leny Yoro, who moved to Manchester from Lille, is nearing a return to action and might make his competitive debut for United immediately after the November international break.

United’s options in defence are starting to look solid ahead of Amorim’s arrival. However, how the current crop of centre-backs at Carrington would fit into the soon to be former Sporting CP manager’s back-three system remains to be seen.

Amid this, a report has suggested that United sporting director Dan Ashworth is already looking to bring in a new defender for the incoming manager.

According to talkSPORT, United are “plotting a fresh move” for Branthwaite next summer.

Before United secured the signings of De Ligt and Yoro, they made a move for the Everton star. However, the Merseyside outfit turned down their offers.

However, the England international “remains at the top” of United’s “wish-list” even for the Amorim era.

In fact, it is claimed that Ashworth believes the 22-year-old defender “would suit new boss Ruben Amorim’s playing style and his preferred 3-4-3 system.”

Branthwaite is comfortable with the ball at his feet and excels in defending wide areas.

It is understood that the Everton man has “ambitions to play for a top Premier League club.” In that regard, Liverpool are also monitoring the player’s progress at Goodison Park.

Both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have entered the final years of their deals at Old Trafford and Jonny Evans, 36, is not getting any younger. As such, the reported interest in Branthwaite makes perfect sense.

Manchester United are seeking our first win of the Europa League campaign, when PAOK come to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Reds are unbeaten in the competition but, after three draws, are under pressure to move up the table and push for a top-eight spot and automatic place in the round of 16 next year.

Greek champions PAOK are 30th in the 36-team standings, with their only point coming from a 2-2 draw against another of our future opponents in Viktoria Plzen.

However, their domestic form has still been good, as they sit only a point behind leaders, and Salonika rivals, Aris.

United welcome Bruno Fernandes back from suspension, after he missed the 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce, on the back of his red card in the game at FC Porto.

The skipper is likely to start as Ruud van Nistelrooy remains in interim charge, ahead of Ruben Amorim’s arrival later this month.

Mason Mount was in full training on Monday but is unlikely to be rushed back, although there will be another session at Carrington in front of the cameras on Wednesday morning.

The Reds have been without defenders Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro, plus midfielders Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Kobbie Mainoo and Mount.

Winger Antony also sustained an injury during our previous game in the competition in Turkey.

Youngsters Jayce Fitzgerald and Jack Fletcher have been in the senior squad under van Nistelrooy but would need adding to the B list to feature this week.

        PAOK’S TEAM NEWS

Shola Shoretire, the youngest player to appear for United in European competition after his substitute outing against Real Sociedad in 2021, looks set to feature for Razvan Lucescu’s men.

The forward scored in a recent 3-0 victory against Egaleo and is not the only familiar face in the Greek champions’ squad.

Former Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren, ex-Wolves full-back Jonny, plus Baba Rahman and Tiemoue Bakayoko, both once of Chelsea, are on their roster. However, Lovren is ineligible and Bakayako has been out injured.

Taison returned to the XI for the win at Lamia, while Fedor Chalov pressed his claims with an eye-catching performance as a substitute. Giannis Konstantelias was sidelined due to illness.

Man Utd: Ronaldo return ‘under Amorim’ mooted but he’s tipped to ‘follow’ another Red Devils legend

          man-utd:-ronaldo-return-‘under-amorim’-mooted-but-he’s-tipped-to-‘follow’-another-red-devils-legend

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham thinks Cristiano Ronaldo would be “very welcome” to return to the Premier League giants “under Ruben Amorim”.

Ronaldo returned to the Red Devils during the 2021 summer transfer window as they signed him from Serie A giants Juventus.

The 2021/22 season was successful for the forward, who scored 24 goals in his 38 appearances across all competitions. However, sixth-placed Man Utd finished the season trophyless and failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag took charge at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and he butted heads with Ronaldo, who left his boyhood club at the end of 2022 after dropping down the pecking order under the Dutch head coach.

At the time, it was reported that Ronaldo was unhappy after Man Utd missed out on the Champions League. He was linked with several European sides but joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr after his contract with the Premier League giants was mutually terminated.

READ: Ruben Amorim ‘joke’ fails to land as English press take him seriously

Ronaldo left Man Utd after he slammed Ten Hag, the Glazer family and several club legends in an infamous interview with Piers Morgan.

The Portugal international was never going to be seen back at Man Utd while Ten Hag remained in charge, but his sacking and the appointment of Ruben Amorim could see him make a return down the line.

Sheringham believes Ronaldo would be “very welcome back at Man Utd, but he also suspects he will be “onto bigger and better things” after retiring.

“Cristiano Ronaldo would be very welcome back at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he is onto bigger and better things,” Sheringham said.

“I think that Ronaldo will follow in the path of David Beckham in doing things away from coaching, higher profile things around the world.

“I’m sure he’d be very, very welcome in any capacity coming back to the club, but I doubt that he’ll be a coach.”

39-year-old Ronaldo has entered the final stage of his career and Dietmar Hamann believes he’s facing a “big issue”.

“Cristiano Ronaldo can sense his career is coming to an end soon, which is probably why he acted the way he did against Scotland,” Hamann said.

“His ego has made him the player he is today. But, I wasn’t a big fan of his antic in the Euros – he put his interests ahead of Portugal’s interests.

“Ronaldo has scored a few goals in the Nations League, but does he make them a better side? I’m not sure, they’re a massively talented team who could win these games without him.

“Ronaldo is at a point in his career where he needs to start prioritising the team instead of himself. I’m not sure how much of the say the manager has in team selection, which is a big issue.

“I’d be very surprised if Cristiano Ronaldo reaches 1000 career goals, I don’t think he can go on for that long.”

United star confident that “he can win an extension” to his current deal once Amorim comes onboard – report

            united-star-confident-that-“he-can-win-an-extension”-to-his-current-deal-once-amorim-comes-onboard-–-report

Despite significant strengthening in the summer, Manchester United’s defence has continued to leak goals while also being unable to hold on to a lead in multiple games.

That was the case on Sunday as well as Chelsea grabbed the equaliser within five minutes of United taking the lead. And there will certainly be changes in the backline once Ruben Amorim steps into the hot seat.

One of the biggest differences from the Erik ten Hag era will be the formation with the Sporting Lisbon manager preferring to utilise a three-man defensive line.

And this shift could potentially work out in favour of a United star who seemed to be heading out of the exit door when the former Ajax coach was in charge.

            Maguire’s future

Harry Maguire was no longer first choice when the Dutchman took over and the club had tried to sell him for the last two summers in a row.

As per TBR Football, the England international, who is currently injured, is keen to impress the Portuguese tactician and he believes that he could even extend his stay at the club despite his current deal ending in 2025.

Maguire has played some of his best football in a back-three system for England and also has experience of playing there during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.

The club has the option of triggering the one-year extension in his contract and the £80 million star is confident that the club will exercise that option.

That is why the Englishman has no interest in leaving in January on a cut-price fee or in agreeing any pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs despite that route being available.

“At Sporting CP, Amorim has favoured a 3-4-3, which could be excellent news for Harry Maguire’s hopes of reviving his United career.

            Maguire keen to stay

“To that end, TBR Football understands that Maguire will refuse to consider leaving the club in January or signing a pre-contract elsewhere in the near future.

“The England international is currently focused on staying at United and Maguire believes that he can win an extension to his deal in the coming months.”

While United have not expressed any interest in retaining the 31-year-old, Amorim will have a say in contract extensions and if Maguire impresses, there is no reason why he cannot extend his stay.

His lack of pace can be covered in a back three system while his excellent ball distribution and carrying skills can make him an effective outlet while playing out from the back.

Romano reveals likelihood that Man Utd sign ‘insane player’ for Ruben Amorim

              romano-reveals-likelihood-that-man-utd-sign-‘insane-player’-for-ruben-amorim

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim is extremely unlikely to sign Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior as things stand, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag last Monday after Man Utd made a terrible start to the new campaign with three wins from their first ten matches in the Premier League.

Man Utd moved quickly to appoint Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim – who had been linked with a number of other Premier League clubs – with the Portuguese coach joining on November 11.

The Red Devils spent around £200m on new players over the summer transfer window as they put their full weight behind Ten Hag.

And there are already rumours of potential signings Man Utd could make to impress Amorim and help the Portuguese coach impress in his first season at Old Trafford and beyond.

Vinicius Junior, who caused a stir by snubbing Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, is one apparent target with a report last week claiming the Brazilian, whose contract runs out in 2027, had ‘passed’ on talks over a new deal with Real Madrid.

And reports in Spain have claimed that Man Utd, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in taking him off Madrid’s hands, while another report has insisted that Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal are ready to offer €300m to land the Brazilian.

But transfer expert Romano insists that a move to Man Utd in the summer transfer window is “not even realistic” for Vinicius Junior or the Premier League club.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I wanted to finish here from Madrid with Vinicius Júnior, because in recent days I received from some of you many messages like ‘Fabrizio, is it true that he’s going to Saudi, is it true that he’s being linked with Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG?’

“Guys, that clubs around the world can appreciate Vinicius is absolutely normal. He’s a fantastic, insane player. So it’s absolutely normal, but I can guarantee that as of today, links of Vinicius to Chelsea, to PSG, to Manchester United, are absolutely not even realistic. So there is nothing ongoing between Vinicius and any European club.”

Gary Neville described Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior’s decision to snub the Ballon d’Or as “absolutely outrageous” after Man City midfielder Rodri won the award.

Speaking on The Overlap US, Neville said: “I’m delighted Rodri has won the Ballon d’Or. I’m delighted it has gone to a player who has contributed week in, week out consistently at such a high level for his club and his country, winning the European Championship.

“They weren’t favourites, by the way, they were nowhere near favourites in the Euros, Spain, but he’s absolutely immense and he was immense for Manchester City last season.

“Now I can understand people in Madrid and people in Brazil being upset that their boy hasn’t won it because he’s a special talent. I feel in doing what they’ve done, to disrespect Rodri in the way in which they have, I think it naturally does that, I think it’s absolutely outrageous.”

Starting a new job can be scary, but when Ruben Amorim walks through the doors at Carrington next week, he’ll already know where the toilets are, having spent a week there as part of an internship six years ago.

As per The Athletic, the new Manchester United head coach studied for a master’s degree in high-performance football coaching at the University of Lisbon, which was developed in partnership with Jose Mourinho – who in 2018 was himself in the United hotseat.

A high-flier on the course, Amorim was rewarded with a week-long stint shadowing Mourinho in the build-up to Arsene Wenger’s final visit to Old Trafford (a 2-1 United win secured by a stoppage-time Marouane Fellaini header).

In that week, Amorim and two other interns observed six training sessions, spent time soaking up Mourinho’s wisdom and, crucially, “Learning what the average week is like when you are the manager of one of the biggest clubs in European football.” It was a glimpse into his future, whether he knew it then or not.

The Athletic report that Amorim would arrive at Carrington around 8am and spend time with players and staff in the canteen. Amongst those players were two former team-mates from his playing days in Benfica, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof, who will be in the frame to line up under Amorim in the coming months.

Amorim and Lindelof shared the pitch three times, as per transfermarkt.

His days were spent speaking to Mourinho and his assistant Rui Faria in their downtime between leading training sessions, and working on a report as coursework.

But in the evenings things were less formal with the legendary manager sometimes taking the interns to his private room in the basement of Tapeo and Wine, a tapas restaurant owned by Juan Mata.

With Champions League football on the screens, the interns listened to Mourinho hold forth on the players they were watching who he had coached as he shared his knowledge with the group.

He got on particularly well with Amorim. Geoff Labine, a fellow intern, told The Athletic, “You could tell they were having more private conversations.”

“I think he was just giving Ruben pieces of advice, little things about how to run a professional team. I think before the course even started, they had identified Ruben as one of the next great Portuguese coaches.”

That’s certainly how he is viewed now, at this most pivotal moment in his career, although Labine points out that he is “less pragmatic” than the Special One.

“He is much more diplomatic and less authoritarian, even the way that he’ll speak to people is a little less abrasive and more like a team, more together,” he said.

“We’re on the same team. Although they have similar philosophies, I think there was a lot different.”

Joe has spent more than half his life writing about football and all of it following United. As a child he told a doctor his name was ‘Paul Scholes’, but could never pick a pass like him no matter how much he tried.

                    summer-signing-has-no-future-under-amorim,-portuguese-boss-wants-to-“rely-on-his-own-ideas”-to-solve-problem-–-report

Ruben Amorim’s arrival might spell the end of Joshua Zirkzee’s very brief Manchester United career, suggests reports in Italy.

United’s decision to sack Erik ten Hag and eventually replace him with Amorim just a few months into the new season has left question marks on their transfer business during the summer.

The Red Devils spent nearly £200 million on five senior signings during the summer transfer window and now it remains to be seen how they would fit into the Portuguese tactician’s plans.

As far as Zirkzee, who was signed from Bologna for a fee over £35m, is concerned, he is already understood to be counting his final days in Manchester.

The Dutch striker, who was seen as one of the most exciting attacking talents after a commendable season in Serie A, joined United despite strong interest from AC Milan and Juventus.

However, he has struggled to cope with English football’s pace and intensity, having managed just one goal in 15 appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old’s form as well as Ten Hag’s departure has raised uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.

According to Calciomercato, Zirkzee is not part of Amorim’s plans, and the incoming manager “wants to rely on his own ideas” and bring his own attacking options.

Interestingly, the report also mentions Sporting CP talisman Viktor Gyökeres as Zirkzee’s potential replacement.

As such, a quick exit for the Netherlands international is possible, with Milan and Juventus mentioned as potential destinations.

However, it is suggested that a transfer is only possible if United are willing to part ways with him on loan.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Ten Hag “didn’t even want him” in the summer. INEOS signed Zirkzee without Ten Hag’s approval. Now, it remains to be seen if they will keep him against the wishes of their new manager.

The Reds are looking for a first European win of 2024/25, having taken three points from our three matches in this season’s competition. Draws at FC Porto and Fenerbahce followed September’s 1-1 with FC Twente at Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team for the third and penultimate time, ahead of Monday’s arrival of new head coach, Ruben Amorim.

                      TEAM NEWS

Ruud has admitted that United are ‘thin in midfield’, with Christian Eriksen joining the list of absentees last week.

Kobbie Mainoo continues to be sidelined, meaning Victor Lindelof deputised in the middle as a substitute on Sunday and 17-year-olds Jayce Fitzgerald and Jack Fletcher watched on from the bench.

Mason Mount has subsequently returned to full training, while Bruno Fernandes returns from his one-match European suspension. Apart from this, Ruud’s options are likely to be similar to the weekend, although he could provide a further update on Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw in Wednesday’s press conference.

One familiar face in PAOK’s squad will not be involved, as former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has not been registered for the competition. Captain Vieirinha – a 38-year-old veteran who scored against United for Wolfsburg in 2015 – is also ineligible.

Ex-Aston Villa striker Mbwana Samatta is another player who is unavailable, while Tiemoue Bakayoko has been injured.

                      A BRIEF HISTORY OF PAOK

This is our first-ever meeting with the Salonika club, who are the most successful Greek side outside the traditional ‘Big Three’, which consists of Athens outfits AEK, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.

That trio have claimed all but eight of the national championships played so far, with PAOK accounting for four of those successes, in 1976, 1985, 2019 and 2024. Razvan Lucescu’s side pipped AEK to the title by two points last term, qualifying for the Champions League play-offs, where they were eliminated over two legs by Malmo.

The second-city club, who can count Dimitar Berbatov among their alumni, are the only Greek team with more wins than losses in European competition, and they have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Conference League in two of the past three seasons under the guidance of Lucescu.

The Romanian, son of the legendary former Shakhtar Donetsk boss Mircea, is their most successful manager having masterminded a league-and-cup double in his previous spell at the helm.

                      FORM GUIDE

PAOK have already played nine games in Europe this season, defeating Shamrock Rovers in a play-off tie to make it to the league phase of this competition.

After narrow defeats to Galatasaray and FCSB, they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Viktoria Plzen last time out, at their atmospheric Toumba Stadium. The title-holders’ domestic form has been more impressive, and they sit just one point behind city rivals Aris after 10 games of the Greek Super League season, although there was criticism following a home derby loss in September.

Last weekend’s 3-0 win over Egaleo in the first leg of the last-16 Greek Cup tie featured a first PAOK goal for Shola Shoretire, the Academy graduate who left United during the summer.

                      PLAYERS TO WATCH

Lucescu prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, with his full-backs playing high and wide. Guinea international Mady Camara is the midfield destroyer who allows the likes of Jonny and Baba Rahman to roam forward, while Andrija Zivkovic and Taison are dangerous on the flanks, with the latter offering a more traditional wing option to the Serbian’s preference for cutting inside.

Giannis Konstantelias is arguably PAOK’s most valuable player and the creative young midfielder came up clutch with nine goals and six assists during the title-winning campaign. Konstantelias is being coveted by some of Europe’s elite clubs and will look to make an impact again on English soil, a month after featuring for Greece in their first-ever victory over the Three Lions at Wembley.
