7 key passes, 4 ground duels, 4 tackles: United hero in win vs. Leicester marked huge club career milestone in style

Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 victory over Leicester City, thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes, a Victor Kristiansen own goal and substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

For the opener, Amad Diallo produced an excellent back-heel assist for Fernandes, who found the bottom corner with a powerful shot.

Fernandes was at it 20 minutes later, this time producing a touch that deflected off Kristiansen to head into the back of the Leicester net. The United skipper then found Garnacho inside the box before the Carrington academy graduate expertly curled the ball into the top corner with his right foot.

It was certainly a brilliant result for United, in what was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final match in charge as interim manager.

United had 52% possession in comparison to the Foxes’ 58% share of the ball. United managed three shots on target from their total 13 cracks at goal. Leicester on the other hand attempted six shots, testing Andre Onana five times.

The Red Devils put together 487 passes with a pass accuracy of 84%. The visitors strung 26 fewer passes with a success rate of 83%.

Beyond his involvement in all three goals, Fernandes touched the ball on 71 occasions and successfully found his teammates with 39 of the 52 passes he attempted.

Seven of his passes were key passes.

Fernandes tried to connect with five crosses and three long balls and was successful with just one cross and two long balls.

He attempted two shots, one of which was on-target for the goal, while the other didn’t require Mads Hermansen to intervene.

The Portugal international won four of the seven ground duels he delved into and came out on top in two of the aerial challenges he contested.

The playmaker also made one clearance and as many interceptions. He put in four tackles.

    (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Before the match, Fernandes was honoured by the club for reaching a club milestone of 250 appearances since he joined from Sporting Lisbon. What a way to mark the occasion.

Up next for United is Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town after the international break.

Four things we learnt as United ease to comfortable 3-0 win over Leicester City to end Ruud era in style

      four-things-we-learnt-as-united-ease-to-comfortable-3-0-win-over-leicester-city-to-end-ruud-era-in-style

Manchester United took on Leicester City aiming to draw themselves closer to the top four and finish off Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell in style.

Andre Onana started in nets while Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot took up their usual spots in the fullback roles.

Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez returned to the centre of the defence with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte offering the protection in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund also began from the start while Thursday night’s hero, Amad Diallo, was given another opportunity to shine.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

Amad contributes again from the start

The young Ivorian sparkled on Thursday night against PAOK and was rewarded by Van Nistelrooy with a rare start in the Premier League.

The 22 year old did not disappoint as a sumptuous back-heeled assist set up Bruno Fernandes to open the scoring nice and early for the Red Devils to settle the nerves.

He also showed much of the same energy as he did midweek, running at the Foxes’ defence and causing them all sorts of problems.

His first half performance was almost capped off with a great run and shot that was well saved by Mads Hermansen in the Leicester goal.

Amad has contributed well this season every time he has started and this continued today giving incoming head coach Ruben Amorim a lot to consider.

Bruno is clicking into gear at right time for Amorim

Fernandes endured a tough start to the season but he has really stood up to be counted in the last month or so.

He fired in a wonderful finish after linking up well with Amad to score his fourth goal in four games under Van Nistelrooy.

He thought he had added a second just before half time but the goal was later given as a Victor Kristiansen own goal. He later added an assist to a phenomenal strike from substitute Alejandro Garnacho to seal the three points.

Since joining the club in 2020, Fernandes’ form has inevitably been linked to United’s and Amorim will be licking his lips at the prospect of his compatriot clicking into gear just at the right time as his spell as head coach is about to begin.

      Ugarte shows promise

The Uruguayan has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford and struggled last time out versus Chelsea in the league.

Ugarte was much better today though as he won the ball back time and time again and was a bundle of energy in the middle of the park.

Whilst his passing was a little off, like most of his teammates on a slippery surface, he certainly showed what he is capable of from a defensive perspective.

Amorim has spoken of his excitement of linking up again with his former player and the 23 year old will also surely be ecstatic that he can prove himself at United under the guidance of the man who oversaw his breakthrough onto the European stage at Sporting Lisbon.

Van Nistelrooy brings back the good vibes

Former manager Erik ten Hag boldly claimed at the start of the season that his team was full of good vibes after the FA Cup win and successful summer but this often seemed far from the truth based on what fans saw on the pitch.

The mood certainly took a decidedly gloomy turn in the last few weeks of the Ten Hag regime but in the four matches Van Nistelrooy has been in charge, there has been an extra spring in the step of the players.

It must be taken into account that a new manager bounce is common and three out of the four matches were against inferior opposition, all at home.

Nonetheless, the players clearly responded to his methods and seemed to play with much greater freedom and most obviously of all, just seemed to enjoy being on the Old Trafford pitch again.

Reportedly the Dutchman will have a crunch meeting with Amorim tomorrow to thrash out his future but regardless of what happens, he has certainly enhanced his reputation as a coach on one of the biggest stages of all.

Having defeated Leicester 5-2 two weeks ago in what was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first match as interim manager, Man United were on the hunt for what would be a crucial three points at home in the United legend’s final game in charge ahead of Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford.

It was captain Bruno Fernandes whose creativity sparked his team to life, pushing them to a resounding victory in front of the Old Trafford crowd.

United were in the driver’s seat at the start, camping in the visitors’ final third. Amad Diallo showed great footwork early on, getting on the end of a through ball and dribbling through the left side of Leicester’s defence as he waited for reinforcements to arrive. Unfortunately, he was fouled, with Bruno Fernandes playing a rather wasteful cross into the box with his free kick.

15 minutes in, Jordan Ayew burst into the box, beating Lisandro Martinez to the ball before Casemiro bravely slid in to send the ball out for a corner. While a threatening cross, Matthijs de Ligt headed the ball out of danger, setting up United for a quick counter.

Then, a moment of magic arrived. Noussair Mazraoui took a throw-in to Fernandes, who passed to Amad on the edge of the box. The winger cooly backheeled the ball back to Fernandes, who curled his long-range effort into the far corner to hand United an early lead.

In the 24th minute, the visitors came close to equalising when Wilfred Ndidi got on the end of a threatening free kick. Andre Onana did well to catch the Leicester midfielder’s header.

11 minutes before half-time, Facundo Buonanotte almost broke through United’s defence, dribbling past De Ligt and Martinez; however, Mazraoui made a potentially goal-saving tackle.

In the 38th minute, United doubled their lead when Mazraoui’s thunderous cross slammed into the leg of Victor Kristiansen, who turned the ball into his own net. At that point, United truly looked comfortable with a two-goal cushion – a rare sight given how much they’ve struggled to score goals this season.

Two minutes into stoppage time, United were on a rapid break, with Amad showing his dribbling skills again as he cut past two defenders and weaved into the box. His strike was denied by a solid leg save from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, bringing an end to what was an impressive first half of football from a composed United lineup.

United came out swinging in the second half, dominating the ball and constantly applying pressure to the Leicester defence, who appeared adamant not to allow more goals in.

54 minutes in, the visitors won a free kick outside the box. Marcus Rashford did well to intercept when they attempted to take the free kick short.

In the 57th minute, Jonny Evans replaced Diogo Dalot, while Alejandro Garnacho came on for Rashford. It was an interesting cameo for Evans, who was coming up against his former club, with whom he won an FA Cup and even captained on a stage.

Six minutes later, Facundo Buonanotte caught Martinez with a nasty challenge. Buonanotte was booked for his tackle, while Martinez was attended to by United’s medical staff. While the bench looked concerned over Martinez’s wellbeing, he managed to rise to his feet and make his way to the touchline, readying himself to return to action when permitted.

Ndidi tried to take advantage of Leicester’s superior numbers, threading a through ball into the box that Onana collected. This was followed by Martinez returning to the field.

Ayew took an opportune shot from the edge of the box that Onana parried out for a corner. The United defence did well to shut down the visitors’ attack, showing cool heads at the back.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, Garnacho sprinted down the left wing into the box, however, he lost his footing, missing a lucrative scoring opportunity that won’t come by too often. It appeared that the winger injured his wrist during his fall; however, he managed to continue playing.

Joshua Zirkzee made his way onto the pitch in the 75th minute, replacing Hojlund.

14 minutes from time, Garnacho received a through ball from Fernandes. Rather than passing to Zirkzee, who was calling for the ball in the middle of the box, Garnacho chose to go for glory, thumping his shot wildly astray.

In the 78th minute, Casemiro was substituted for Christian Eriksen. Old Trafford broke out into applause for the Brazilian, who produced an impressive performance.

Eight minutes from time, Garnacho showed just how lethal he can be off the bench. The Argentine received a long ball from Eriksen in the corner of the box, cutting inside and bending his shot into the far corner. A sublime strike from Garnacho to extend United’s lead to three goals.

Six minutes of stoppage time were announced, giving United some extra time to impress their local fans in what had been an impressive display up until that point.

92 minutes in, Amad took an opportunistic shot from long range that glided over the crossbar.

Overall, it was a phenomenal performance from United, providing a perfect end to Van Nistelrooy’s tenure as interim manager. The United legend did a stellar job of stabilising his team following Erik ten Hag’s departure, turning United’s form around and setting up a healthy environment for Ruben Amorim to enter as he assumes his new role at the helm.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Fernandes, Hojlund, Rashford, Amad, Casemiro, Dalot, Ugarte
        Subs: Evans, Garnacho, Zirkzee, Eriksen

Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 6 – Made himself big to deny Wilfred Ndidi and made another big one to keep Jordan Ayew from finding the back of the net. Produced some nice passes too.

Diogo Dalot 3 – Struggled against Abdul Fatawu. The Leicester winger had the better of him for large parts of the game and it’s no surprise that he was among the first United players to be taken off. Didn’t get the chance to get forward as much as he usually does.

Matthijs de Ligt 7 – Very strong in the defence. Solid performance and barely gave the likes of Ayew a sniff.

Lisandro Martinez 5 – A reckless challenge on Ayew and also had a let-off early on but he grew from there and saw off the rest of the game comfortably. Slotted in at left-back when Dalot came off and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Noussair Mazraoui 9 – Calm and composure personified! He was brilliant at left-back and delivered a sublime cross for United’s second of the match. Picked up where he left off when he was shifted back to the right. Simply ran the show at Old Trafford and his fantastic form as a Red continues.

Manuel Ugarte 7 – Won nearly everything in midfield. Brilliant in his duels and tackles. Also covered the ground well, giving United legs in the middle of the park. Some poor passes in the first half but he corrected this in the second period.

Casemiro 5 – Decent performance but there were one or two unneeded sliding challenges.

Bruno Fernandes 9 – Involved in all three goals. A screamer for the opener, his touch forced an own goal for the second and registered an assist for Garnacho’s strike. Nice to see him contributing in front of goal once again and what a way to mark his 250th appearance for United.

Amad Diallo 8 – Incredible performance and showed why he should be regularly starting games. Excellent back-hell assist for the first goal. Almost got on the score sheet himself when he took on three Leicester defenders but sent his effort directly at the goalkeeper.

Marcus Rashford 4 – Didn’t impact the game as he barely posed any threat. Kept coming too central for some reason and much like Dalot, it was not surprising to see him hooked a few minutes after the restart.

Rasmus Hojlund 2 – A non-event of a match. Didn’t get a shot off and didn’t do anything really. Wout Faes had no problem against him.

          Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho 8 – Bright spark when he came on and produced a lovely curled finish to ensure all three points were secured.

Jonny Evans 6 – Comfortable when he came on to get United over the line.

Christian Eriksen 7 – Wonderful no-look pass to Fernandes in the lead-up to Garnacho’s goal.

Joshua Zirkzee 5 – Didn’t offer much when he came on.

Tuchel ‘tells’ Man Utd star he’s ‘big’ reason why England ‘failed to win Euro 2024’ in Southgate dig

            tuchel-‘tells’-man-utd-star-he’s-‘big’-reason-why-england-‘failed-to-win-euro-2024’-in-southgate-dig

According to reports, new England boss Thomas Tuchel has been ‘in talks’ with Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, who has been handed a ‘lifeline’.

Before this summer’s European Championships, Rashford had been one of Gareth Southgate’s preferred players as the 60-cap England international featured regularly under the 54-year-old.

However, the Man Utd forward’s struggles last season resulted in him dropping in the England pecking order and was not named in Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

Rashford has not played for England since March 2024 and has not been recalled by Lee Carsley during his spell as interim boss.

At the start of this season, the 27-year-old has flattered to deceive as he’s only grabbed a goal and an assist in his ten Premier League appearances.

Despite this, a report from The Sun claims Tuchel has been ‘in talks’ with Rashford over handing him an ‘England lifeline’.

READ: Ruud van Nistelrooy demoted as Manchester United ‘bar set low’ for Amorim all of a sudden

Tuchel was named England’s new permanent head coach during last month’s international break but he does not officially start until the start of next year.

After naming his final England squad, Carsley insisted Tuchel did not influence who was called up. He said: “He hasn’t had any influence on the squad selection.

“I congratulated him via text. He is highly respectful of the job I am doing. I see this as a massive privilege, the trust the FA have placed in me and my team.”

Carsley opted to snub Rashford but the report from The Sun claims a comeback is likely next year as ‘the German has told the United forward that he wants him in his Three Lions squad — as long as he keeps his form up’.

A source for The Sun said: “Tuchel contacted Marcus and his representatives and told them he saw Marcus as an essential part of the England squad.

“He said he believed a big part of England’s failure to win Euro 2024 was not having Marcus as an option.

“Other teams fear his abilities and Tuchel said he believed without Rashford, England didn’t offer a strong attacking threat on the left and that made them easier to play against as a lot of the ball came down the right.

“Top 5 in the league”: United’s attacking starlet holds the key to Amorim’s success at Old Trafford – The Athletic

              “top-5-in-the-league”:-united’s-attacking-starlet-holds-the-key-to-amorim’s-success-at-old-trafford-–-the-athletic

Alejandro Garnacho is Manchester United’s top scorer this season.

Last year, no player featured in more consecutive starts than the 20-year-old Argentine and he has played more than any other youngster at Old Trafford this campaign. Yet, as to be expected with an inexperienced attacker, he has also struggled, particularly in recent weeks.

However, given the Red Devils’ inadequacy in front of goal this year, it feels as if getting the best out of Garnacho will prove key to any success new head coach Ruben Amorim can expect to enjoy for the remainder of the season.

But, in what position and, perhaps more crucially, system will the 39-year-old Sporting manager hope to help the talented starlet achieve this?

The Athletic reveals Garnacho ranks in the top five in the Premier League for shots taken this season. Only Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Eberechi Eze and Rodrigo Muniz rank higher than the Argentinian international’s 3.83 per 90.

Rasmus Hojlund, United’s number nine, is almost the antithesis with a shot shy 1.05 per 90. The other most featured members of the forward line – Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo – produce 0.89 and 1.15 respectively (FootyStats).

Garnacho is, therefore, producing more shots on the opposition goal than United’s other three attackers combined. It’s little wonder he is the club’s top scorer – it’s as much a numbers game as a quality one.

And while there is an element of the 20-year-old’s narrow focus on goal coming at the cost of better decision making, you simply have to shoot to score. If Hojlund, for example, whose finishing ability when he chooses to utilise it is statistically strong, was to adopt Garnacho’s confidence United would likely be far higher up the Premier League table.

The Athletic reveals Garnacho’s non-penalty xG – essentially how likely you are to score outside of penalties – is 0.46 per 90; again, in the “upper echelons of the league.”

The underlying statistics indicate the winger’s confidence is not misplaced. Given he only turned 20 in July, the scope for improvement with more refinement and a better articulated tactical system, which Amorim has been hired at the expense of the recently departed Erik ten Hag to implement, is vast.

United’s financial situation, which one expert describes as “close to the wire” of FFP limits, means the club is unlikely to be able to spend vast sums on a new attacker which many believe is needed for Amorim to succeed. Rather, the Portuguese manager will have to rely on improvements to the existing squad to produce better returns in the opposition box; and Garnacho is the best candidate for Amorim to do this with.

But United’s new head coach has forged his highly-regarded reputation upon a three-at-the-back system which relies on wingbacks, rather than traditional wingers. The Athletic believes Garnacho’s is potentially the only wide player at Old Trafford who possesses the “requisite athleticism to cover a whole flank by himself”.

Given the ongoing injury struggles of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the outlet reveals Amorim may be ” forced to experiment on the left in his first few games” with the Argentine one such trialist for the LWB role. This would limit Garnacho’s ability to be decisive in front of goal, however.

Conversely, if Amorim deploys Garnacho as part of his expected three-man attack – Sporting often line up in an unorthodox 3-4-3 formation – then he will be competing with Hojlund, Rashford, Amad, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony, as well as Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, given the 39-year-old’s preference for an attacking midfielder to play further forward.

This competition would also, naturally, limit Garnacho’s minutes on the pitch and, consequently, his opportunities in front of goal.

And while there is an element of sensibility to protecting a player so young from the demands of weekly football, as Garnacho has been forced to adapt to at Old Trafford in the past twelve months, it feels counterproductive to not play the team’s most productive attacker as often, and as far forward, as possible.

United’s success, and by extension Amorim’s, feels closely tied to how successful Garnacho is allowed to be for the remainder of the season.

If the Portuguese coach can help hone the 20-year-old’s desire to score into a more consistent goal threat, United will climb the table rapidly. If he deploys Garnacho as a LWB to accommodate the squad’s glaring deficiency in the position, this ascension feels less likely, given how shot shy his teammates played further forward are.

“Close to the wire”: Financial expert offers worrying prediction for Amorim’s ability to transform United

                “close-to-the-wire”:-financial-expert-offers-worrying-prediction-for-amorim’s-ability-to-transform-united

Financial expert Stefan Borson believes Manchester United’s “exceptional costs” this year means the club will be “close to the wire” in terms of Financial Fair Play regulations in what could prove a decisive blow to new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Borson, a former Premier League financial advisor, reveals the Red Devils have incurred a “big hit” this year after “spending money they probably weren’t budgeting for this year.”

He references the costs involved of dismissing Erik ten Hag, and the price paid to hire Amorim as his replacement, as well as the number of staff redundancies recently invoked at Old Trafford, as the basis for this unexpected outlay.

“The thing with United’s finances, we don’t know how close they were or even whether they have breached for 2023-24,” Borson states. “I think it’s very unlikely they breached, but it looks like the sort of things that got them over the hurdle were allowances in respect of the charges for the Jim Ratcliffe sale process.”

“The impact of that if that’s an allowable deduction, which means they are okay for 2023-24, that flows through to the next two years in terms of the calculation.

“Let’s assume they got through 2023-24 and effectively started this year on zero, the costs that they have incurred in respect of the dismissal of Ten Hag and hiring of Amorim, and also some of the costs that they have had from a corporate perspective in terms of redundancies and exceptional costs there, they have had quite a big hit that they probably weren’t budgeting for this year.”

The financial expert believes the Red Devils may have spent “more than £35 million” on the decision to replace Ten Hag with Amorim which will “dramatically affect” the club’s FFP balance sheet.

Amorim, widely considered one of the most talented young managers in Europe following his impressive four-year stint at Sporting Lisbon, is expected to implement his three-at-the-back system when he arrives at Old Trafford next week.

It’s likely the club will have to invest heavily in the first-team squad to help the Portuguese manager to effectively achieve this, given the obvious gaps at wingback, as well as additional recruitment in defence and attack.

This would require United to invest heavily in the transfer market over the coming windows – something Borson believes will be made much more difficult by the money spent to bring in the 39-year-old coach, as well as the staff overhaul INEOS have implemented since gaining full control over the football operation at Old Trafford in February.

The financial rules clubs must abide by are different domestically compared to continentally, with UEFA’s system stricter than the English Football Association’s.

This means United are likely to be “close to the wire for FFP and PSR (Profits and Sustainability), particularly in Europe”, he concludes.  “That bit is definitely true.”

It appears Amorim’s ability to get the most out of the existing United squad will prove crucial to his success in Manchester, rather than being able to rely on the club’s financial might to buttress him with a wealth of new signings to implement the tactical revolution INEOS have hired him to produce.

The 2023/24 season was less successful and De Zerbi often expressed his frustrations regarding Brighton’s transfer activity and long-term ambitions.

The respected head coach left Brighton after they finished 11th in the Premier League and exited the Europa League in the round of 16.

Despite having an underwhelming season with Brighton, De Zerbi was linked with several elite European clubs in the summer and was mooted as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag at Man Utd.

READ: Ruud van Nistelrooy demoted as Manchester United ‘bar set low’ for Amorim all of a sudden

Towards the end of May, a report from The Guardian revealed De Zerbi had been ‘sounded out’ by Ten Hag about replacing Ten Hag at Man Utd.

‘Roberto De Zerbi has been sounded out as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.

‘De Zerbi’s attractive possession-based style of play and the 44‑year‑old Italian’s feat of qualifying Brighton for European football last year for the first time in the club’s history have impressed Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who controls football operations at United having bought a 27.7% stake in the club last year.

‘It is understood United have contacted De Zerbi with regard to succeeding Ten Hag.’

Despite this, Man Utd stuck with Ten Hag, who had a prolonged stay of execution before being sacked at the end of last month.

De Zerbi meanwhile joined Ligue Un outfit Marseille. who signed Mason Greenwood, Adrien Rabiot, Neal Maupay, Elye Wahi and Jonathan Rowe in the summer.

Under De Zerbi, Marseille have made a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign but suffered a disappointing 3-1 home loss against Auxerre on Friday night. This result leaves them nine points adrift of table-toppers PSG.

A report from L’Equipe claims De Zerbi has used Man Utd to inspire his players as he ‘showed his players the contract offer’ he received from the Premier League giants.

The report also reveals the reason he chose Marseille over Man Utd: ‘This is where I could have been, but I put my passion before money. I came to Marseille for the passion.’

New England boss Thomas Tuchel was also in the frame to replace Ten Hag and super agent Pini Zahavi says “everything was prepared” for him to join Man Utd.

Zahavi said: “If I were Thomas, I would have gone to Manchester United. He had the opportunity. Everything was prepared, the deal was basically dry.

“Thomas has a spark of genius in him. But in today’s football you have to be wise and a diplomat. He’ll have to learn that.”

Confirmed United XI vs Leicester: Amad, Rashford and Hojlund the front three, Garnacho rested

Alejandro Garnacho has been rested today by Ruud van Nistelrooy in his last match in charge of Manchester United.

The Dutchman has opted to play Amad and Marcus Rashford on the wings, with Rasmus Hojlund keeping his position up front.

Amad scored twice for the Red Devils on Thursday in the Europa League but had been a doubt for this game after picking up a knock.

Bruno Fernandes will, as always, play in the number 10 role.

Elsewhere, Andre Onana is in goal.

The back four are Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui.

Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are once again the holding midfielders.

Occupying the substitutes’ bench are reserve keepers, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, Josh Zirkzee, Antony and Garnacho.

Back in training but still unable to take part are Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Toby Collyer.

Kobbie Mainoo is making good progress but still not able to train.

Kick off at Old Trafford is at 2pm.

“8 goals in 15 games”: Out of sorts United man aiming to cash in against favourite opponents today

Manchester United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford this afternoon looking to climb up the Premier League table.

The Red Devils have a strong record against the Foxes, winning 71 matches and losing on 36 occasions.

The sides met in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first match as interim coach and United stormed to a hectic 5-2 victory over their opponents in the Carabao Cup.

United will be looking to end the Dutchman’s term as temporary manager as positively as it started. Here are three plotlines for United fans to savour.

Can Amad Diallo cement his place in the team?

After a significant amount of time on the bench under Erik ten Hag, Amad was finally given a chance to shine against Greek side PAOK midweek in the Europa League.

To say the Ivorian took his chance would be an understatement as he grabbed a brace and easily could have scored a hat trick if he had kept his composure one-on-one against the PAOK keeper.

Amad has much growth left to complete in his game, but he is an incredibly exciting player and the type of skilful, brave winger that United fans adore to watch at the Theatre of Dreams.

He did pick up a knock but Van Nistelrooy claimed in his pre-match press conference that he should be fit to play.

The 22 year old will be hoping he is given this chance to cement his place in the first team and give the incoming Ruben Amorim something to seriously think about.

United will hope the floodgates can open in the league

United have struggled for goals all season in the league, finding the net a paltry nine times in 10 matches.

They did score three against Southampton in the league and Porto in the Europa League. In addition, they have found relief in the Carabao cup where they smashed seven past Barnsley and the aforementioned five against the Foxes.

Whilst the Leicester team that comes to Old Trafford today will undoubtedly be a stronger line up, United will hope that they can finally get into gear and open the floodgates ahead of Amorim’s arrival.

Van Nistelrooy loved nothing more as a player to see goals fly in for the Reds and he will hope he can sign off as interim manager in the same way.

United certainly have form for scoring against the Midlands’ side as they have scored in each of their last 28 Premier League matches against them.

Marcus Rashford’s fine form versus Leicester

The Englishman had an horrendous season last year but without setting the world on fire, he has steadily improved this time around.

He has scored four goals in all competitions and will certainly aim to reach at least double figures in this campaign.

The Mancunian has a fine record against this afternoon’s opponents and will hope to continue his excellent form against them.

According to the BBC, he has “scored eight goals against Leicester in all competitions, more than he has managed against any other team.”

Despite the goals, he has only scored once in the league this year and will be looking for a strong performance to impress the incoming Amorim and remind the world of his clear potential.
