Rising star with familiar face is the perfect solution to Amorim’s big United dilemma – opinion

Former Manchester United left back, Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, continues to shine at SL Benfica after being sold by the club last summer.

The Spaniard is quickly becoming one of the most exciting young players in Portugal as he has made the left hand side of Benfica’s defence is own.

The 21 year old has already played 16 matches in the league and the Champions League, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

His fine form has not gone unnoticed by his former club and there have been transfer rumours that the club is keen to activate his buy back clause in the January window as Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw continue to struggle to gain match fitness.

Previous manager Erik Ten Hag admitted that the club was certainly looking at the option of resigning him, while new head coach Ruben Amorim is said to be a fan of the player after seeing him up close and personal over the course of 2024 as his city rival while at Sporting Lisbon.

The Ferrol born fullback massively impressed as Benfica crushed rivals FC Porto at the weekend, scoring a goal and receiving a rating of 7.3 on Sofascore.

The young left back found himself in space on the wing with a well timed run and cut inside before firing the ball into the net with his weaker foot. He also won five out of his six ground duels and had a passing accuracy of 82%.

Data also compares him favourably to fellow United left back target Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich. His performances so far this season see him outperform the Canadian in cross percentage, defensive actions and progressive passes.

He also performs equally to the Canadian left back in other key metrics such as duel and aerial percentages won and also carrying the ball forward. All in the context of playing almost than 200 minutes less than the Bayern Munich man.

It is clear that Carreras is a star on the rise and intriguingly his style of play would fit well into Amorim’s system.

The Portuguese coach will begin with his tried and trusted 3-4-3 formation, which means the wingers play a hybrid role of defenders and attackers.

It is hard to envision Malacia or Shaw succeeding in this position as despite both being comfortable on the ball, they are more traditional left backs. Amorim’s system demands that his wing-backs “provide width in advanced areas, using them as a key part of his attacking armoury.”

Carreras’ incredible engine and ability to contribute in attacking areas would certainly make him an intriguing candidate for the role.

The only drawback is whether the youngster would be tempted in coming back after receiving much more trust at Benfica than United and whether he would want to disrupt his fine progress right now. In addition, it has been reported that he would also prefer a return to another former club, Real Madrid.

Nonetheless, with a new coaching team and head coach, who he will know better than most of the United players due to his year in Portugal, he may be tempted to give life at Old Trafford a second chance.

Man Utd ‘offer’ record-breaking deal for ex-Spurs star as Amorim eyes exit of ‘two resounding failures’

Man Utd have made a record-breaking offer for Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane as the Red Devils look to provide Ruben Amorim with increased firepower, according to reports.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag after a terrible start to the new Premier League season with the Dutchman leading them to just three wins in their opening nine matches.

Ruud van Nistelrooy put four more points on the board in the two Premier League matches since Ten Hag’s departure by beating Leicester City and drawing with Chelsea.

Man Utd moved quickly to bring in Ten Hag’s permanent successor in Amorim with the Portuguese coach arriving in Manchester yesterday after winning his final match as Sporting Lisbon manager 4-2 against Braga over the weekend.

And there are already plenty of rumours about which players could arrive in the next couple of transfer windows as the Red Devils look to give Amorim some support.

There are some doubts as to whether Amorim has the right players to suit his 3-4-3 formation, which he preferred to play at Sporting, while there are serious questions about the strikers at Man Utd.

The Red Devils spent a lot of money to bring Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to Old Trafford but the Man Utd duo, although still early days, have so far failed to live up to their exciting reputations.

And now reports in Spain claim both Man Utd and Paris Saint-Germain have made an ‘offer’ worth €130m (£107m) – which would be a record-breaking deal for the Red Devils – to sign former Tottenham striker Kane.

Kane has been in sensational form since swapping Spurs for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 with the England captain bagging 61 goals in 61 matches for the Bavarians.

But ‘his adventure at the Allianz Arena could be really short’ as Man Utd and PSG ‘already have around 130 million euros ready to ensure that the former Norwich City or Leicester City player ends up leaving Germany’ next summer.

While PSG are looking for a goalscorer to replace Kylian Mbappe, new Man Utd boss Amorim has ‘ordered the purchase of a footballer who can lead the project’.

Amorim wants to replace ‘two resounding failures’ in Zirkzee and Hojlund after Ten Hag was ‘convinced’ the pair were ‘very interesting footballers’.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has pinpointed three key failures of Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Petit told Instant Casino: “The results of Manchester United simply weren’t good enough under Erik Ten Hag. Players didn’t improve under him. That is a deadly combination if you’re a manager of a top club and you want to stay in the job.

“I also don’t think that Ten Hag’s communication was good enough. He was not good in the press conferences in terms of explaining what he wants to do on the pitch, and he was always trying to find excuses, while trying to put in the front of people’s minds what he won, what he did for Manchester United.

“Smile, joy, passion, communication. They weren’t there for Ten Hag.

“You have to also question his record in the transfer market. He was responsible for signing so many players that underperformed and failed. I think he signed far too many players that he knew from Holland too. So much money has been spent on the players that he’s been asking for.”

Man Utd star told ‘football is not the game for you’ amid criticism: ‘It’s a self-indulgent load of old fanny’

          man-utd-star-told-‘football-is-not-the-game-for-you’-amid-criticism:-‘it’s-a-self-indulgent-load-of-old-fanny’

Man Utd winger Alejandro Garnacho has been told that “football is not the game for you” after his muted celebration against Leicester City over the weekend.

The Red Devils have been in terrible form this season with Ruben Amorim taking over at Old Trafford after Man Utd won their fourth Premier League match of the season on Sunday.

Man Utd are currently 13th in the Premier League table and not many players have been immune to criticism this season.

Garnacho scored the final goal of the game as Man Utd beat Leicester 3-0 to continue their encouraging post-Ten Hag form but the Argentina international refused to celebrate.

His team-mate Bruno Fernandes revealed that Garnacho was unhappy with some comments from supporters in recent weeks and the Man Utd captain gave insight into Garnacho’s mindset.

Speaking after the match, Fernandes said: “It was a good day at work, I have to say. We have a lot of players with big qualities, but people can get too excited after one game and too down after another.

“Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans. I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.

“I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player, we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games. We want them to score every game but that isn’t going to happen.”

Giving his reaction to Garnacho’s muted celebrations against Leicester, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney said on talkSPORT: “I said it last night on Match of the Day, and I’ll repeat it. It goes twofold.

“One, it says what players are like nowadays, where their skin is so thin that one gentleman can say what he wants to say and everyone sulks.

“And secondly, if he’s getting affected by that, I would say to him, just as an older pro: ‘I don’t think this football game is for you, big man’.

“Because you play for the biggest club in world football. If you play poorly, you’re going to get people to get on your case. If you play really well, you’re still going to get people to get on your case. You play for Man United.

“It’s called jealousy and that’s part of the game. So, disappointed that he didn’t celebrate. It’s an unbelievable goal.

“But this will be the making or breaking of him, because if he can’t handle that from one gentleman with an iPhone in his face, then I don’t think this is the game for him, unfortunately.”

Former Crystal Palace chairman and fellow talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan added: “What you saw on the weekend was the absolute embodiment of the culture of Man United, and the problem they’ve got in that dressing room where that kid doesn’t celebrate that goal.

“The reason why he doesn’t celebrate is because he’s had some hurty words said about him, or people have been critical of his performances. That is all you need to know.

“It’s a self-indulgent load of old fanny. You’ve scored a goal playing for one of the best teams in English football, in one of the biggest clubs in English football, and all you can do is walk around like [Marcus] Rashford, which is the world’s on my shoulders, poor old me. Change the narrative!”

An insight into Amorim’s fabulous five aiming to fire United back to the top – report

            an-insight-into-amorim’s-fabulous-five-aiming-to-fire-united-back-to-the-top-–-report

Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim touched down in Manchester yesterday as he immediately got to work at Carrington.

The Portuguese coach cannot start training on the pitch due to the delay in his work permit but he can hold meetings and make plans for his imminent debut in English football.

There were numerous pictures snapped yesterday of the new boss meeting the top brass at the football club such as Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth as he was shown around his new home.

However, Amorim was not alone on the private jet that arrived at the city’s airport, he was also joined by five other men who will play an integral part in whether Amorim is finally the man to lift the gloom around Old Trafford.

The Telegraph have outlined some of the key information behind his lesser known coaches and starts off with his number two, Carlos Fernandes.

Fernandes is just 29 years old, making him younger than a lot of key United stars such as Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro and is a “trusted lieutenant” who has been with Amorim since his start at Casa Pia.

Interestingly Amorim considers him a “much better coach” than he is and once said, “I often say if I become Bobby Robson, then he’ll be my José Mourinho.”

Next up is Emanuel Ferro who at 45 brings a blend of freshness and experience and he has worked with two current United players Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte while they were at Sporting Lisbon.

He has collected experience working in places like Tunisia and Malaysia but made his name at Sporting’s youth level and becoming a key ally of Amorim.

At just 28, the third member and fellow assistant is Adelio Candido, who has a sports degree and first worked with Amorim at Casa Pia where he was a youth coach.

“He often analyses play from the stands and will funnel messages through to Amorim and his staff. Considered to be one of the ‘good cops’ on the staff.”

He also assists with set piece work which will be of great interest to United fans who often feel the club is far too open at defending them and incredibly blunt when it comes to scoring from them.

Jorge Vital is the next member of staff to join the Red Devils and he is by far the most experienced member of Amorim’s team at 63 years old.

He is the goalkeeping coach and first came onto Amorim’s radar when they worked together at Braga.

Fans will be curious to see how his work will influence the vastly improving Andre Onana and if it will lead to the club building out from the back better than they were able to under Erik ten Hag.

The final member of Amorim’s fabulous five is Paulo Barreira who is a sports scientist. Interestingly he did his degree in Liverpool and has worked for both the Anfield side and Arsenal, so is the only member of the team with Premier League experience.

He “is well regarded in sports medicine circles” and has an expertise in “rehabilitation, injury prevention and physical conditioning”, which is something United desperately need after their injury hell of last season.

In a day of whirlwind change yesterday, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel all left the club as the Amorim revolution has gone into overdrive. Alongside him United fans will be dreaming these five will fulfill their clear potential at Old Trafford to finally bring United back to where they feel they belong.

“Destined to be one of the best”: United’s dream target set to leave current club – report

              “destined-to-be-one-of-the-best”:-united’s-dream-target-set-to-leave-current-club-–-report

Manchester United have reportedly enquired about Sporting Lisbon’s 17-year-old sensation, Geovany Quenda, numerous times as the player is set to leave his current club.

The youngster has broken through this season and become an integral part of the Portuguese champions’ side.

The right winger has played 18 games already this season, racking up two goals and two assists in that time.

With United lacking firepower on the wings and Antony’s future up in the air, it seems likely that they will prioritise strengthening their attack out wide and incoming head coach Ruben Amorim clearly rates the Portuguese youngster highly.

It has previously been reported Amorim wants the teenage sensation at United but that the club is likely to miss out on the player as the Bundesliga clubs of Bayer Leverkusen and Red Bull Leipzig harbour a strong interest in the winger.

It has also been suggested that Sporting consider the player unsellable and United have “no chance” of landing the mercurial talent.

Catalan paper Mundo Deportivo contradict this flow of events however, contending that not only have United enquired numerous times about the 17 year old’s future but he is also destined to move away from the Portuguese capital in the next few months.

Described as the “Portuguese Lamine Yamal”, his progress is being carefully monitored by some of England’s biggest clubs but crucially, “one of the teams that has already called the offices of Jose Alvalade the most times to ask about Geovany Quenda is Manchester United, a club that will soon be joined by Rúben Amorim, precisely the coach with whom the young Portuguese talent has landed in professional football with the Sporting de Portugal shirt.”

Nonetheless, United will face quite a fight on their hands as Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal are also linked to a player who is described as “one who is destined to be one of the best players in the world during the next decade.”

Interestingly, the outlet takes a very different stance to previous reports and suggests, “what seems clear is that Geovany Quenda’s time at the Lisbon team already has an expiration date despite the fact that it has just begun.”

They claim that his transfer value will be significantly higher than the €15 million that Transfermarkt set it as but that won’t be a problem for the riches of the Premier League.

United will certainly hope that when it becomes clear that Quenda is on the move, his ties to Amorim will play a major role in his decision as they continue to try and collect some of the most breathtaking young talents in world football.

United planning sensational summer swoop for Arsenal star to replace unhappy Ten Hag recruit – report

                united-planning-sensational-summer-swoop-for-arsenal-star-to-replace-unhappy-ten-hag-recruit-–-report

After a difficult start to his Manchester United career, Andre Onana has cemented his place as the undisputed No 1 at the club, restricting reserve keeper Altay Bayindir to only three appearances in two seasons.

And the Turk, who has started in both Carabao Cup games this season, wants more minutes and has been linked with a return to Turkiye.

And that could force the club into action and as per Fichajes, the club are eyeing Arsenal’s Karl Hein to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

The Estonian is currently on loan at La Liga side Real Valladolid and has started in all of their league games, impressing with his shot-stopping ability.

Arsenal youth star on United’s radar

Apart from the Red Devils, Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also looking at the 22-year-old as their reserve keeper.

The report mentions the Gunners are open to his sale but want €20-25 million for his signature. Whether the duo shell out that kind of money for a backup keeper remains to be seen.

“LaLiga has a new protagonist, as Manchester United and Tottenham have entered the market to sign a new goalkeeper who is making a big impression in the Spanish league.

“Karl Hein , 22, arrived in Spain as a long-term project to gain experience and maturity in a competitive environment. Currently playing for Arsenal FC, he is on loan at Real Valladolid CF.

“The Estonian goalkeeper has quickly adapted to the pace of LaLiga, showing great reflexes and an excellent ability to react, key elements that have put him on the radar of top-level clubs.

                Hein’s future

“Manchester United, in the midst of a rebuilding process, are reportedly looking for a new goalkeeper to compete with their current first-choice goalkeeper, while Tottenham are also considering signing Karl Hein as part of their long-term project.”

His market value currently stands at €3 million according to Transfermarkt and he recently signed a new contract extension which clearly shows that Arsenal still feel he could be valuable.

It must be remembered that Hein is a full Estonia international and has made one appearance for the Arsenal senior team a couple of seasons ago.

Should he make the move, it will be another recent instance of an Arsenal youth product making a move to Manchester. United recently snapped up Chido Obi-Martin and another goalie in Hubert Graczyk from the London side.

Unsettled United star set for showdown talks with the club over his playing situation – report

                  unsettled-united-star-set-for-showdown-talks-with-the-club-over-his-playing-situation-–-report

Manchester United winger is reportedly set to hold talks with the club over his limited playing time so far this season.

Antony has managed just 27 minutes in the Premier League this term. In total, he has played on five occasions across all competitions but has started just once, in the 7-0 demolition of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Under Erik ten Hag before his sacking, Antony was firmly at the bottom of the pecking order, below the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo.

Caretaker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy also overlooked him when he returned from an injury sustained in the Europa League meeting with Fenerbahce.

It has been suggested that United are prepared to cut their losses and part way with Antony as early as January.

Such is United’s desire to offload the Brazilian, that they’re even willing to sanction a loan exit in the hope that he will revive his career elsewhere and in the process, alert some clubs to his availability.

UtdDistrict now reveal that Antony has grown disgruntled with his situation at Old Trafford and wants some clarity moving forward.

“UtdDistrict understands that Antony is not currently happy with his situation at Old Trafford and wants to hold talks with the club to understand his role going forward.”

“While the Brazilian remains dedicated to the team, he is not content with his current game-time and will look for an exit if the situation does not change.”

One positive for Antony is that he has the chance to prove himself under new boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim arrived at United on Monday afternoon to officially kickstart his reign following Ten Hag’s departure late last month.

Over the next few weeks, Amorim will undoubtedly be assessing the squad to determine which players will be useful to him in his favoured 3-4-3 formation. There could be an opportunity for Antony to reinvent himself as a wingback and salvage his United career.

Manchester United have been dealt a big transfer boost in their pursuit of Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Martin Baturina, who has reportedly turned down a contract offer from Real Madrid.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Baturina was “very high” on United’s list of potential midfield reinforcements.

It was subsequently stated that the Red Devils were plotting a swoop for Baturina, who was also mentioned as a player Real Madrid were keen on following a recommendation from fellow countryman Luka Modric.

Indeed, Baturina has been dubbed “the next Luka Modric” and is widely seen as one of the biggest talents to come out of Croatia in recent years.

It’s easy to see why the 21-year-old is in high demand. A creative playmaker with an eye for goal, Baturina has so far registered two goals and impressive seven assists in 17 appearances across all competitions for Dinamo Zagreb.

He is incredibly comfortable on the ball and is an excellent reader of the game. Baturina also possesses great dribbling ability and a superb first touch, which enable him to easily bring the ball under his spell. The creative genius is very good at breaking down deep blocks and has great vision.

According to Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger, Real Madrid attempted to steal a march in the race to land Baturina by offering him a contract, but their efforts proved futile.

Berger wrote on X, “Sky Info: Croatia’s top talent Martin Baturina (21) has rejected an offer from Real Madrid!”

“The Spaniards lured him with a five-year contract, but the Royal’s plan also included loaning Baturina out within Spain for two years.”

“The attacking midfielder, who has a big fan and supporter in Luka Modrić (39), wants to be a permanent fixture in a top team from the summer onwards. Barca, Atlético and Manchester United are also interested.”

“Baturina plans to leave Dinamo Zagreb after the season and sees the Bundesliga as the perfect step. No release, price tag is around € 20-25m.”

Amidst uncertainty over the long-term future of Christian Eriksen – whose contract is expiring at the end of the season – Baturina would be a solid replacement for the Dane.

Solskjaer names the Premier League manager who seriously advised him against re-signing Ronaldo

Former Manchester United striker and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Kieran McKenna warned him against re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021.

Ronaldo made a heroic return to United in the summer of 2021, joining from Serie A giants Juventus.

He came back to the club 12 years after he first left to sign for Real Madrid. At the time, McKenna formed part of Solskjaer’s backroom staff.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet NRK, Solskjaer divulged that McKenna analysed Ronaldo’s last six matches in a Juventus shirt and warned against bringing him back to Old Trafford.

According to Solskjaer, McKenna harboured doubts about Ronaldo’s defensive capabilities and how these shortcomings would impact the team.

The club legend told NRK, “How are we going to defend ourselves? That’s the first thing he [McKenna] says.”

“It was probably a wrong choice for all of us. But we felt it was the right decision then and there.”

Ronaldo bagged nine goals in 13 appearances under Solskjaer, who was sacked a few months later. Meanwhile, Ronaldo left a year letter after the Red Devils terminated his contract.

McKenna stayed on as an assistant to Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick before departing to become Ipswich Town boss. He led the Tractor Boys to the Premier League and is set to come up against United on November 24, immediately after the ongoing international break.

In hindsight, McKenna was right and interestingly enough, it appears that new United head coach Ruben Amorim harboured the same concerns about Ronaldo. It’s believed that Amorim threatened to resign from his role at Sporting Lisbon if the Liga Portugal club explored the signing of Ronaldo.

Solskjaer insisted that he is proud of his time at United despite how it ended.

“I am proud of what I did. I have to say, I think it was a lot of good, and we were on our way to something very good. We came third and second, got a number of semi-finals, and unfortunately, we lost that final [against Villarreal].”

“That’s how I think about it, if we had won it, it could have been a completely different outcome.”

On what’s next for him, Solskjaer suggested he has effectively retired from football management but admitted he could be tempted back as a national team boss.

Regarding the prospect of stepping onto the international stage, he remarked, “I have reached a position where I can pick and choose, and I am lucky there. Financially, I don’t need anything.”

“It must be something exciting enough, together with the right people. But I feel so well now that there must be something that triggers me enough for me to choose to travel from Nordmore [in Norway].”

“I think that a national team could suit me, but then it can’t be on the other side of the globe.”

The 51-year-old explained that he’s rejected at least two job offers since departing United.
