    Manchester United made their way to Walton Hall Park Stadium to face Everton in the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday evening.

    Marc Skinner made several personnel changes, with many players who took part in the win against Leicester City last weekend being handed a rest.

    Phallon Tullis-Joyce started in goal with a defensive four of Jayde Riviere, Maya Le Tissier, Millie Turner and Anna Sandberg ahead of her.

    Hayley Ladd, Hinata Miyazawa and Emma Watson formed the midfield trio. Rachel Williams was tasked with leading the line and was flanked on either side by Geyse and Melvine Malard.

    United started very well, pinning Everton back into their own half. The Reds appeared to be fully aware of Everton’s desire to play out from the back and they tried to force mistakes out of them by pressing aggressively – an approach that paid dividends.

    Malard had a chance to shed first blood after Williams showed great strength to hold on to the ball before sending her through on goal. Malard attempted to find the near post with a clever effort but she dragged her shot wide.

    United continued to search for ways to break down Everton’s stubborn defence, with Sandberg in particular proving lethal.

    The summer signing combined well with Malard down the left and the pair looked to make things happen. Geyse and Riviere were also brilliant on the opposite side.

    United finally got a reward for their efforts after around 15 minutes of play. Ladd sent in a good cross from a corner kick, which proved too difficult for Courtney Brosnan to bring under her spell. The Everton goalkeeper came under pressure from Malard and Williams and could only send the ball into the back of her own net.

    Malard came close to doubling United’s lead as she connected with a brilliant cross from Sandberg after they were awarded a free-kick. On yet another occasion, Malard couldn’t hit the target.

    Ladd, who was dominant in midfield, also fired a powerful shot from outside the box but she was thwarted by the crossbar. It seemed like Brosnan got a slight touch to keep it from flying in.

    Everton’s forays into United territory were few and far between each other. Their most threatening moment of the opening 45 minutes came when Toni Payne almost capitalised on some poor communication from Turner and Le Tissier but she was judged to have committed a foul.

    Right before the break, the hosts were given a free kick in a promising position but Veatriki Sarri sent it well and truly over the bar and did not at all trouble Tullis-Joyce.

    United picked up where they left off when the second period kicked off. They maintained their dominance, barely giving the Toffees a way out.

    Around the 54th minute, Williams showcased excellent ball control, holding up play before threading a pass to Geyse. The skillful Brazilian forward delivered a cross, and in Everton’s attempt to clear, the ball fell to Ladd. However, her shot lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Brosnan.

    A few moments later, Malard also sent in a cross from the left aiming for Williams, but the United striker couldn’t rise high enough to direct the ball on target.

    Skinner brought in Celin Bizet and Jess Simpson in place of Riviere and Sandberg, who was sensational on her first competitive start for the club.

    Bizet nearly made an instant impact when she delivered a cross into the far post but Williams couldn’t connect with it.

    Malard was once again presented with a golden opportunity to get on the score sheet after some pitiful defending from the Toffees inside the box but her shot was wild and flew high.

    United turned the screws on their hosts and this time, it was Watson who had a crack at goal but Brosnan was equal to the task and saved it.

    Skinner made more changes, thrusting Leah Galton and Simi Awujo into the action. Williams and Geyse were taken off.

    The substitutes contributed, helping to get United over the line. Galton nearly got on the score sheet when she produced an incredible touch and turn but her shot struck an Everton defender for the corner. Awujo injected energy and impetus into the midfield, although the final ball was lacking.

    After multiple missed opportunities, United finally extended their lead courtesy of Le Tissier, who volleyed in the ball from a corner routine. There was another late chance for Malard but Brosnan saved her shot.

    The victory has left United at the summit of Group A, having won all two of their games. Even better is that the Reds have now won two consecutive matches, which will bode well for the team’s confidence as they prepare for Sunday’s showdown WSL clash with Chelsea.

      Gary Neville claims Manchester Untied pair Marcus Rashford and Casemiro should have stayed a little closer to home over the international break.

      Rashford was seen at an NBA game between the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets in New York City last week, while Casemiro posted pictures of him with his family at Disney World in Orlando.

      Neville wasn’t bothered by the optics of Rashford’s attire or that he “wants attention”, but was concerned by the Red Devils pair travelling so far ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first week in charge of the club.

      “It comes with the territory when you’re this sort of player and stature,” Neville said when asked about the attention Marcus Rashford has received on the It’s Called Soccer! podcast.

      “I’ve got very little sympathy for players who are the stars who are on huge money, huge commercial contracts, they want that attention, they need it as that’s what fuels them and makes them the great players what they are and that’s what gives them that adrenaline rush, they’re going to get more attention, so I’ve got no problem with that and the attention he gets.

      “I’ve got no problem with him going away in the international break and I’ve got no problem with the clothes that he wears, he can wear whatever he wants, the only thing I would say, and I’m saying this very calmly as I don’t want a ‘Neville hammers Rashford’ to be honest with you, as I’m not hammering him.

      “It’s been a very difficult period for the club and it’s been a very difficult period for Marcus Rashford. There was a player I used to play with that used to say, when times were tough that basically you go down to that extra level of detail in making sure everything’s perfect, you take the butter off your toast, you literally make sure you’re absolutely looking at every single 1% of detail you could.

      “So I used to think standing in that tunnel, when going through a difficult time, I’d think ‘right I’ve got to work my way out of this, I’ve got to be absolutely perfect’. Every drink, every sleep, every training session, every stretch, has just got to be absolutely perfect.

      “So would I think the most relaxing way to spend your time, whether you’re Casemiro, and I’ll bring him into it, Casemiro is 30 odd years of age, Marcus Rashford is in his 20s, travelling 10 or 11 hours and I, to be fair, have done that quite a few times in the last few months, you get a bit of jet lag going to the US. So, a three, four day jet lag-based trip, when you’ve got basically the idea of training and making sure you’re fit, I don’t personally think it’s the right choice of distance and choice of destination.

      “If the New York Knicks were playing three or four hours away, with a one-hour time difference I’d say go for your life. But I think personally, If I was looking at being absolutely perfect in myself, and I maybe took professionalism to an obsessive level, I wouldn’t be on a 10 hour flight to a different time zone that was potentially going to cause me more of a problem.

      “Physically from a tiredness perspective, at particularly this point where a manager has just been sacked and we’re going through a tough time and all eyes are on us. I’d lie low and I’d go somewhere and rest. There are some Manchester United players who have gone away for the international break, and you don’t know where they’ve gone, but they’re the clever ones in my mind.”

        Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton in the Women’s League Cup. Here are our player ratings from the game.

        (A score of 6 is around average)

        Phallon Tullis-Joyce 6 – Barely had anything to do all game.

        Jayde Riviere 6 – Solid performance. Comfortable and linked up very nicely with Geyse.

        Maya Le Tissier 9 – Confident and controlled performance from the United skipper. Partnered Turner well at the heart of the team’s defence and had the number of the Everton attackers all through. Looked to step up into the middle of the park every now and then. Wonderful strike to double the Reds’ advantage and secure the victory.

        Millie Turner 6 – Delivered a steady showing during her 45 minutes on the pitch. Her only shaky moment came from a miscommunication with Le Tissier, which nearly allowed Toni Payne to capitalize. Fortunately for United, the referee ruled that the Everton striker had committed a foul.

        Anna Sandberg 8 – Electric performance on what was her first competitive start for United. Went forward whenever the opportunity presented itself, combining well with Malard to cause havoc on the left side of the pitch. Sound defensively and hardly ever needed to break a sweat. Some of her set-piece deliveries were also superb.

        Hayley Ladd 7 – Should have had at least one goal. Her powerful first-half effort struck the crossbar. She came close to getting on the score sheet in the early stages of the second half but her shot was tame and easily gathered by the Everton goalkeeper. Fantastic in midfield.

        Hinata Miyazawa 5 – Did her job with a steady performance. Nothing much to rave about.

        Emma Watson 5 – Decent display during her competitive debut for United. Worked very hard in midfield. Attempted a shot in the second half but was thwarted by Brosnan.

        Geyse 4 – Started brilliantly but slowly faded as the proceedings carried on. Some nice crosses inside the box.

        Melvine Malard 4 – She played a key role in United’s opening goal but could have had one or two of her own. She will likely be disappointed not to have scored, but other aspects of her game were strong. Consistently found herself in the right positions and was a constant menace to the Everton defenders.

        Rachel Williams 6 – Held up the ball well and pressed with intensity. She had a couple of chances on goal, particularly in the second half before being substituted, but nothing came of them.

        Substitutes

        Dominique Janssen 7 – Classy player! Crisp passer. Came up with some long balls down the left to Malard, who was surprisingly afforded acres of space to work with.

        Celin Bizet 5 – Nice cross into the far post to try and find Williams.

        Jess Simpson 6 – Picked up where Sandberg left off. Ran riot down the left and delivered a few dangerous crosses that United should have made more of.

        Leah Galton 5 – Almost tested Brosnan late into the match when she produced an excellent touch and turn but her shot hit an Everton defender for a corner.

        Simi Awujo 6 – Helped get United over the line. Embarked on one or two good runs from deep but slightly let herself down with a poor final ball.

          Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had a falling out with plenty of big-name stars during his two and-a-half years in charge and more often than not, he got his way.

          The Dutchman fell out with Jadon Sancho for his poor training displays and indiscipline. And the winger did not take his manager’s words in the right spirit and accused him of scapegoating him and favouritism.

          He was subsequently banished and the player agreed a loan exit in January and enjoyed a fine spell with Borussia Dortmund but the German giants did not have the funds to acquire his signature permanently.

          And thus, the England international returned to Manchester and even played in pre-season before joining rivals Chelsea on loan in the summer.

          And after a bright start there, the 24-year-old’s minutes dramatically reduced after a few below-par performances with Enzo Maresca citing illness as a cause for the absence.

          However, former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara feels that Sancho’s poor discipline off the pitch has once again caught on and is hampering his form at Stamford Bridge.

          “Jadon Sancho’s been given an opportunity at Chelsea to prove people wrong, but it hasn’t happened yet,” O’Hara was quoted as saying by Express.

          “Manchester United spent a lot of money on him, and it didn’t work out, so he’s gone to Chelsea and showed signs of brilliance and confidence at the start, but he seems to have fallen back into his old ways since then.”

          Sancho was often accused of late timekeeping as a result of oversleeping after playing games all night. Fans have spotted him playing on social media as well.

          Chelsea troubles

          O’Hara also felt that the Blues have far better wingers than the former Man City academy graduate at their disposal and thus, Maresca is right to overlook him.

          “I think the problem with Sancho at Chelsea is that there are better players than him in that squad – Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke are more influential than him.

          “He needs to try and produce moments when he gets the chance to impress, or he’ll stay where he is in the pecking order. It’s always going to be difficult when there’s a big group of attacking players in the same squad, but I think Enzo Maresca has worked out that Sancho isn’t as good as a lot of them.”

          Chelsea are likely to have to buy him at the end of his loan spell. Judging from Sancho’s difficulties in London, United were certainly right to dodge the bullet even if it was quite a costly mistake.

            Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris has explained why he has sided with Manchester City and will vote against the Premier League’s associated party transaction (APT) proposal.

            All 20 Premier League clubs will vote on Friday on the new sponsorship rules which were drawn up on the back of an independent panel finding that sections of the existing APT rules were unlawful after a legal challenge from City.

            But City have accused the Premier League of rushing its consultation and called on clubs to vote against the amendments, raising the prospect of further legal action should they be enforced.

            The Daily Mail claim the vote is ‘on a knife edge’ after Villa wrote to their fellow Premier League clubs to explain their position.

            They wrote: ‘It is now abundantly clear that any vote (if passed) will result in immediate further litigation by Manchester City FC and an associated defence by the EPL [English Premier League], incurring material further costs and unnecessary distraction and devotion of time to this issue.

            ‘It is highly likely that the tribunal will conclude within the coming three months, and that an APT rule that takes into consideration the tribunal’s verdict will be supported by all clubs and cannot be contested.’

            The changes would need the support of 14 clubs to pass and the Daily Mail claim Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Wolves and Everton all have their doubts and are considering their options carefully.

            The report adds:

            ‘The meeting is of huge significance with many factors at play. Previous votes have seen abstentions and City’s threat of potentially-costly further legal action has not gone unnoticed across the league.

            ‘The league’s legal costs for a variety of cases, including the ongoing hearing with City over the champions’ 115 alleged breaches of financial rules, have raised concerns among a large number of clubs.

            ‘A vote that fails would also increase the pressure on Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and has the potential to have huge implications, according to those close to the matter.’

            Villa chief Sawiris confirmed his position in a statement on Wednesday.

            ‘In our view, a vote in 90 days on amended terms taking into consideration the Tribunal’s findings will have a significantly greater chance of securing the unanimous support of all 20 Premier League clubs,’ he said.

            ‘Crucially, a unanimous vote will present a fresh start for an embattled Premier League that began with the failed attempt to launch a Super League in 2021.

            ‘With the imminent arrival of the Government’s Independent Football Regulator, it is more important than ever that the Premier League can present itself to the regulator with a united front.

            ‘In our view, this will be far more easily achieved if the APT vote is held in February and supported unanimously by all clubs.

            ‘It is noteworthy that legal bills to date on this matter have already reached astronomical amounts; further challenges and escalation of these fees could be avoided through reaching consensus.

            ‘Ultimately, a unanimous vote will showcase the emergence of a new era of clubs who can compete vigorously on the pitch but work together to strengthen the Premier League and its global appeal.’

              Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has pinpointed one big change that new head coach Ruben Amorim will make at the club.

              Amorim officially took over the reins at Old Trafford next week, following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. He took charge of his first training session on Monday ahead of United’s clash against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town on Sunday.

                Manchester United are “leading the race” to sign Rosenborg BK starlet Sverre Nypan but the 17-year-old is awaiting “first-team assurances” before he considers a move away from Norway.

                Nypan has emerged as one of the hottest midfield prospects in Europe after becoming the youngest debutant in Rosenborg’s history.

                The 17-year-old’s potent pairing of technique and creativity has seen him earmarked as the “next Martin Odegaard”, returning an impressive seven goals and ten assists for the Norwegian side this season.

                United hold a long-standing interest in Nypan and a report relayed by The Peoples Person revealed the Red Devils were aiming to “broker a deal” for him in January.

                And now it appears the club are at the front of the queue to do so, despite significant interest from Europe’s elite, including Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

                Dean Jones (GiveMeSport) states sources have revealed United are “leading the race” to sign Nypan with the youngest previously admitting it would be a “dream” to play at Old Trafford.

                However, Jones reveals the starlet will “prioritise seeking assurances over first-team opportunities” as a key factor in any potential transfer away from his boyhood club.

                The report indicates the 17-year-old is “preparing to make a key decision” with United officials likely to be keen to stress the pathway available at the club under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

                The Portuguese coach, who began like at the helm at Old Trafford this week, employs a proactive 3-4-3 system which places great emphasis on two attacking midfielders stationed behind a number nine.

                Nypan appears a perfect fit in one of these roles with the Norwegian’s creativity and comfortability on the ball, as well as his strong dribbling skills, a compliment to the club’s more direct attackers, including Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

                Amorim also has a strong track record of promoting young players, with the emergence of 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda as a key player in his rampant Sporting side a testament to his trust in youth.

                United will be hoping this combination – a system suited to Nypan’s skillset and a manager willing to throw youngsters in at the deep end – will help them win the race for the Norwegian starlet’s signature, with Jones revealing he could become the “first acquisition of Amorim’s reign.”

                  Leroy Sane’s departure from Manchester City all happened a bit too quickly for Premier League fans to realise how good he was in his four years at the club.

                  Sane was part of City boss Pep Guardiola’s first league triumph at the Etihad, and his blistering pace and skill played a helping hand in City making their mark on the league.

                  At 28 now, Sane is still a quality player, striking fear into opponents in both the Bundesliga and Champions League.

                  In recent months, Sane has been at the heart of interest from City’s rivals Manchester United and Arsenal, with both clubs in need of goals and trickery in the forward areas, and a move for Sane for either side would make a lot of sense.

                  Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are pretty light in the forward areas, and with Gabriel Martinelli struggling for form this season, the German winger would have proved to be an excellent option, possibly even tipping Martinelli for the starting spot.

                  For United, they endure the same problems with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho going through the same rut, though Garnacho has scored six goals this season, but the inconsistency is still there for a player who is still only 20-years-old.

                  On a potential move back to England next summer, Sane said: “I follow Premier League football. But the attraction for me lies in the club where I can show my best performance, develop and win titles. I have that at FC Bayern. We keep talking.”

                  Prior to last season where Bayern finished second after Leverkusen’s impressive achievement, the German giants had won 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles on the bounce, so there’s no surprise why Sane feels his best bet to win a title is at the Allianz Arena.

                  With new boss Vincent Kompany, Bayern have started well in the league again, sitting five points clear at the top of the table.

                  Despite the links away from the club, Sane has been open in regards to speaking about a potential new deal. He said: “We are in talks. I feel comfortable in Munich. I feel really comfortable. Talks are very good. My focus is currently on FC Bayern.”

                  Sane replaced Denis Undav in the latest Germany squad for the November internationals after the Stuttgart striker withdrew with an injury. The call-up was Sane’s first since the Euro’s having struggled for fitness all season.

                    Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman provided a worrying response when asked to give his verdict on the performance of Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee on Tuesday night.

                    Oranje were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.

                    Zirkzee lost two of the ground duels he contested, lost possession of the ball eight times and was unable to successfully connect with the one long ball attempt he made.

                    The highlight of his poor performance was his big miss just before the break, which could have put the Netherlands firmly in the driving seat of proceedings.

                    After the match, Koeman was asked to give his opinion on Zirkzee’s display.

                    Koeman replied [via Metro], “My thoughts on Zirkzee’s performance? I am not going to talk about individual player performances.”

                    He instead decided to blame the disappointing result on the quality of the pitch.

                    “The pitch was very difficult to play on, many players slipped. But despite this, we controlled the game quite well until the last half an hour.”

                    All attention for Zirkzee and his teammates now shifts to Sunday’s clash against Ipswich Town at Portman Road. It will be Ruben Amorim’s first match as United boss and for many players like Zirkee, it represents a chance to start afresh and show why United forked out big money for him in the summer.

                      According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur standout Pedro Porro and his entourage are ‘convinced’ that Manchester United will try to sign him next year.

                      The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League and is being linked with several clubs across Europe.

                      The Portugal international had a spell at Man City earlier in his career but he left having failed to make a single senior appearance for the Premier League side.

                      Porro left Man City to join Sporting Lisbon in 2020 and had a great spell in Portugal under head coach Ruben Amorim.

                      His immense form for the Primeira Liga champions tempted Tottenham to sign him during the 2023 winter transfer window. His loan was made permanent for around £35m in the summer.

                      Porro has 20 goal involvements in his 67 appearances for Spurs across all competitions and has been heavily linked with Real Madrid in recent months.

                      The Tottenham star has been identified as an alternative to Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold and the North London outfit are said to be eyeing a ‘significant gain’ if they sell their prized asset.

                      Porro’s former manager – Amorim – has moved to the Premier League as he’s been appointed to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd.

                      Following this move, Man Utd have been linked with several current and former Sporting Lisbon stars. A report in Spain claims they are ‘interested’ in Porro.

                      The full-back’s entourage are said to be ‘convinced’ that Man Utd will ‘make an attempt to sign him’.

                      There is reportedly an ‘excellent’ relationship between Amorim and Porro, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy ‘won’t let him leave for less than’ 70 million euros (£58m).

                      United’s reported interest in Porro is somewhat surprising as Amorim already has Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui to choose from at right wing-back.

                      Earlier this month, Amorim hinted that he is unwilling to move away from his preferred 3-4-3 formation after arriving at Man Utd.

                      “I have to start from something I know very well and then develop that with the players,” Amorim said.

                      “We don’t have much time to train, there are many games, so I’ll start from a structure I know very well.”

                      On leaving Sporting Lisbon and joining Man Utd, he added: “I feel ready for the new challenge.

                      “I’m not naive, I know it’s going to be very different, very difficult. I’m at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I’m looking forward to starting tomorrow.”
