Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has pinpointed one big change that new head coach Ruben Amorim will make at the club.
Amorim officially took over the reins at Old Trafford next week, following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. He took charge of his first training session on Monday ahead of United’s clash against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, his successors have followed an almost similar pattern – beginning their managerial tenures with great promise, only to struggle to sustain progress and ultimately see their efforts unravel within months.
In recent years, one of the most hotly debated topics among fans has been the team’s style of play—or, more specifically, the perceived lack of a clear identity.
In his inaugural address to supporters via club media, Amorim promised that he will seek to implement his football philosophy from day one. This declaration was received very positively.
Ferdinand spoke on his YouTube channel and indicated that Amorim will not only bring forth a new dynamic in terms of how United play, but he’ll also demand a lot from his players.
The former defender said, “He’s [Amorim] telling people it’s gonna be different. What they’re [players] used to like the details, positions, specifics, individual players, it’s not gonna be as straightforward as it was before.”
“[Amorim] is gonna make demands from the players and it’s gonna be different from what you’ve known but buy into it because I did as a player.”
Ferdinand added, “He’s shown he can bring success. He brought it to a club that was starving of success at Sporting Lisbon.”
“He’s got Twitter pages waiting for his press conferences because he always delivers a line.”
Amorim will hold his first press conference as United gaffer on Friday afternoon.
