“I know very well…”: United star who struggled vs Ipswich confident about adapting to Amorim’s intense demands

    “i-know-very-well…”:-united-star-who-struggled-vs-ipswich-confident-about-adapting-to-amorim’s-intense-demands

Manchester United struggled to create and were lucky to come away with a point from Portman Road On Sunday in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge.

It was Marcus Rashford who scored the opener within 90 seconds but after that, the visitors struggled with Ipswich Town creating the better opportunities.

And Amorim had Andre Onana to thank in the end for keeping the hosts down to a single goal while quite a few players did not look suited to the 39-year-old’s demands.

Bruno Fernandes played up top as part of the front three and looked like the system did not suit him as much as when given a free role behind the striker.

    Bruno’s struggles

The club captain fared slightly better when he dropped deep into midfield but with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo to come into the midfield, the Portuguese does not seem like he as a readymade role in the team.

Fernandes was present alongside Amorim for the pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League tie against Bodo/Glimt and was asked about the difficulties in adapting to a new style after so many years of playing as the No 10 in Manchester.

“You always have to adapt to a different idea, different positions, even sometimes playing in the same system you have to adapt to different ideas of playing, on the ball and off the ball because the manager can ask different things.

“So, it’s not difficult for me to adapt in any position, I’m really aware of what we do in training. I try to absorb everything from every position.

“Obviously it’s not possible to get everything but I try to have an understanding of the game because being the captain, the manager can give the message from the bench to the pitch because of the noise or whatever so you have to try and solve the situations together with your team-mates.

“Knowing or having the knowledge of every position, what movements that they have to do, what kind of pressure the manager wants us to do, that’s also a little bit of my role.”

The former Sporting Lisbon star felt being a regular viewer of his former club’s games back when Amorim was in charge has helped him understand his role better.

    Bruno, the Sporting fan

“I know very well what the players of Sporting were doing, I know exactly what they were doing in their positions, not because I was reading what the manager was doing there but because I was watching their games.”

Not only the attacking midfielder but plenty of United’s highly-paid stars are not used to Amorim’s style of playing three at the back while employing wing-backs.

Fernandes revealed that more than the experienced stars, it will be more challenging for the young stars to pick up Amorim’s demands as the international stars are used to playing in different systems for the national team.

In fact, Fernandes himself has played in a similar style for Portugal and that should stand him in good stead moving forward.

“I think it probably could be worse for the younger players because, for me, obviously, as the manager said, we are international players and every time you go to the national team, you probably play in a different system.

“For example, when I go to the national team sometimes we also play with a back three. Sometimes I play as a 10, sometimes I play a little bit deeper, sometimes I play a little bit wider so already in the national team I had that experience of a manager with a [different] formation.

    International players can adapt faster

“Like the manager said, we play with a three at the back but we rotate and play different ways. You press them in one way, you defend in another way, you attack in a way, you always have to move.

“In the national team we do that a lot, so I don’t think age should be a problem, either older or younger, it’s about carrying the most you can from the dynamics and the players you have around.

“Then, I think every training session try to get something from the game and understand what the manager demands from us. At the end, as the manager said, you don’t need to overthink things, you just have to know that we have a base, a foundation and from there on you still have to play and do your game.”

Hopefully, the team will play with more confidence on Amorim’s home debut and pick up a win while looking more fluid on the ball. And the skipper will look to lead from the front as usual.

Amorim plotting to sanction blockbuster January deal for “unbelievable” attacking midfield dynamo – report

      amorim-plotting-to-sanction-blockbuster-january-deal-for-“unbelievable”-attacking-midfield-dynamo-–-report

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly contemplating sanctioning a January deal for PSV Eindhoven attacking midfielder Malik Tillman.

It has been suggested that Amorim will have very little to spend in the upcoming windows, amidst United’s dire financial shape – a fact that became even more apparent after the club announced its quarterly results.

It’s believed that United chiefs are eager for Amorim to try and get the most out of his current squad.

However, this has not stopped the Red Devils from continuing to be linked with several stars, even as the January transfer period approaches.

According to GIVEMESPORT, United retain an interest in Malik, who plies his trade in the Eredivisie. There are at least two other Premier League clubs also eyeing the midfielder, who was described by his USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino as “unbelievable” and “similar to Dele Alli.”

“Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is facing competition from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur after setting his sights on luring PSV Eindhoven star Malik Tillman to Old Trafford during the fast-approaching winter transfer window, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.”

“Manchester United are monitoring Tillman ahead of potentially testing PSV’s resolve with a formal proposal in January, according to GMS sources, but their pursuit is in danger of being complicated due to Aston Villa and Tottenham also contemplating whether to offer a route into the Premier League.”

“His performances have left his current employers facing a battle to keep him on board as the Red Devils, Villans and Spurs have been checking him out as they make plans for the winter transfer window.”

GMS add that United, Spurs and Villa have all sent scouts to watch Tilman in action.

It’s understood that he has more than three years left on his £5,000-per-week contract with PSV Eindhoven.

Tillman impressed on loan at the Philips Stadion from Bayern Munich last term, prompting the Dutch outfit to make the signing a permanent one for around £10 million before the start of the ongoing 2024/25 campaign.

      Bayern have a £30million buy-back and a sell-on clause for the ex-Rangers attacking midfielder.

So far this term, Tillman has made 17 appearances across the Eredivisie and the Champions League, registering an impressive six goals and three assists in that period.

75% save success: In-form United star boasts incredible PL leading record since the start of last season

Manchester United’s turbulent start to the new campaign could have been much worse had it not been for the form of goalkeeper Andre Onana.

In fact, it was the Cameroonian, who came up with a few incredible saves, who saved Ruben Amorim from a debut defeat against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The 28-year-old was subjected to plenty of criticism after his arrival in Manchester but is now demonstrating the performance levels that persuaded United to part with north of £45 million in the summer of 2023.

Figures are now backing up Onana with the United No 1 boasting a 75% save percentage, which is the highest of any goalkeeper that has faced over 150 shots in the Premier League, as confirmed by football analyst, Statman Dave.

The pair of saves to deny Ipswich hit-man Liam Delap at Portman Road were outstanding, with the first likely to be a contender for save of the season.

The big keeper rushed off his line and made himself as big as possible with Delap’s shot from five yards out hitting his hand and going out.

The impressive save was one of many the former Inter man has made this season and there is no doubt United are now getting the best out of the talented goalie.

There’s no denying Onana’s life at Old Trafford started in shaky fashion owing to some horrendous mistakes in the early parts of last season which played a major role in United crashing out at the group stage of the Champions League.

Onana continued to look less than comfortable between the sticks but wasn’t given much protection from the tactics deployed by Erik ten Hag that saw United concede countless shots every game.

However, Onana has grown in confidence since the back end of the previous campaign and has carried that into the new season.

New head coach Ruben Amorim will be desperate for his keeper to continue his strong form and save his boss a further headache with other areas of the squad in dire need of improvement.

Onana is expected to feature in United’s midweek Europa League encounter against Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt at Old Trafford.

Amorim “keen to keep” two struggling stars at United despite January exit talks – report

          amorim-“keen-to-keep”-two-struggling-stars-at-united-despite-january-exit-talks-–-report

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly looking to keep Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund at the club regardless of any incoming transfer offers that may arise.

Rashford has been tipped to potentially leave Man United in the near future, particularly as he struggles to build any decent form and return to his peak as was the case in the 2022-23 season.

Paris Saint-Germain is one of the clubs that has emerged as a potential suitor, with the Ligue 1 giants reportedly looking to sign Rashford in the January transfer window.

Still, there have been contradicting reports claiming that Amorim does, in fact, want to utilise Rashford as his striker, as was the case in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town when Rashford scored the opening goal.

Now, it appears as if Amorim’s plan for Rashford, as well as Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund, is becoming clearer, at least according to an exclusive report from Caughtoffside.

“Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed Caughtoffside that despite the poor form of Rashford and Hojlund up front at the moment, Amorim is keen to keep them at Old Trafford,” the report claimed.

The article acknowledged the interest from PSG, explaining, “Still, it seems United will not be entertaining offers for Rashford any time soon, while young Danish star Hojlund will also get the chance to keep on developing and improving.”

Rashford has been far from his best this season, scoring just five goals and bagging three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions so far.

For Hojlund, the situation has been even more dire, with the Dane scoring only two goals in 13 matches in all competitions.

Considering both players’ poor forms, they can count themselves lucky that Amorim has the patience to allow both of them to prove themselves.

Still, another player who might not receive this opportunity is another struggling forward, Joshua Zirkzee.

“Joshua Zirkzee might be a different story, however, with the Dutchman making a worryingly poor start to life at Old Trafford. Despite impressing a great deal during his time at Bologna, Zirkzee hasn’t looked like the right level for MUFC, and it seems he could already be on his way out of the club and heading back to Italy,” the same report added.

Given that contact between the player and Juventus has reportedly been established, it appears that Zirkzee could very well be on his way toward the exit doors at Old Trafford.

While Rashford and Hojlund might be safe at the moment, Amorim will need to keep a close eye on them to ensure that they show sustainable improvements in their performances and don’t continue to disappoint as they have in the past.

Ruben Amorim’s biggest challenge will be to get goals out of his Manchester United team with the Red Devils currently 18th in the Premier League for goals scored.

Marcus Rashford netted on the Portuguese’s debut against Ipswich Town but after that, he struggled to hold up the ball and his body language was far from impressive.

Second-half substitutes Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee fared little better with the new head coach not pleased with the Dutchman’s impact.

Instead of sprinting inside the box to try and connect with a cross late in the game, the former Bologna star was sauntering around the edge of the box.

              Zirkzee’s difficulties

“Then you have like we are in the end of the game, we were around the box with two strikers. Josh [Zirkzee] has to understand that he has to go to the box to have the crosses,” was the coach’s assessment as relayed by F365.

The 23-year-old has struggled since his summer move, netting only once so far while providing two assists. His poor form has seen many outlets claiming that former manager Erik ten Hag did not endorse his signing while Amorim is also not a fan.

Suffering from a lack of confidence, the Netherlands international has told his agent to try and find him a new club in January. Juventus, managed by ex-Bologna boss Thiago Motta, are leading the race.

Quite a few other Serie A clubs and even Aston Villa in the Premier League are open to recruiting the former Bayern Munich starlet but as of now, the 20-time English league champions have no desire to move him on.

TuttoSport have claimed that should Zirkzee continue to be used as a substitute, he will press for an exit with his agent Kia Joorabchian set to meet Old Trafford officials before Christmas.

              Meeting planned

“Those at Continassa are closely monitoring the evolution of the relationship between Ruben Amorim and Joshua Zirkzee. If the Dutchman were to continue to play the role of a reserve at Manchester United, he could ask to leave in January.

“With Juventus alert and ready to take action for a loan with an option to buy. Keep an eye on the meeting planned before Christmas between the agent of the former Bologna striker (Kia Joorabchian) and the management of the Red Devils. On that occasion, the situation will be assessed and the future of Thiago Motta’s protégé will most likely be decided.”

The Red Devils are likely to offer Zirkzee a bit more time to try and adapt to the new coach’s demands. Should he fail to improve, next summer could see him depart.

United should ideally try and recoup the fee they paid Bologna in case they do decide to move him on. A January deal seems unlikely unless the Old Trafford side can bring in an elite goalscorer on loan.

Ruben Amorim hails ‘real star’ of awkward Ed Sheeran moment after Man Utd draw with Ipswich

                ruben-amorim-hails-‘real-star’-of-awkward-ed-sheeran-moment-after-man-utd-draw-with-ipswich

Ruben Amorim says Ed Sheeran gatecrashing his interview after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich on Sunday was “nothing special” and hailed the “real star in that panel”.

Marcus Rashford’s early opener was cancelled out by Omari Hutchinson at Portman Road to deny Amorim a first victory, and while the Portuguese boss was being interviewed by Sky Sports after the game, Sheeran awkwardly interrupted to share a few words with pundit Jamie Redknapp.

The singer-songwriter has since apologised on his Instagram story and Amorim brushed it off when asked about it ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Bodo/Glimt.

Asked if that incident showed how different life at United is to what he has dealt with before, Amorim said: “Yeah, here you are used to seeing that but in Portugal it is so different.

“I think you sometimes overcomplicate things. It was nothing.

“It was a simple question, or say hello to one of the commentators, so for me it was nothing.

“I just was thinking about the game, and I was with Roy Keane. Roy Keane is the real star in that panel! So, for me, it was really, really OK. It was nothing special.”

Rashford started the Ipswich game down the middle for United, in a role he’s previously said doesn’t suit his game.

Amorim agrees and claims he won’t be sticking as rigidly to his 3-4-3 system as many assumed he would having such great success with that formation at Sporting.

Amorim said: “That positon is not the best for him [Rashford vs Ipswich]. He was fighting with two giants. We will keep looking for solutions. He will have all the help of all the staff and fans. He is a Manchester United boy.

“It is not a surprise. These are different things. I have to use the names of the players to explain the situation to you guys. I have explained why we had some problems in the first half. It was not a problem with the players; it was about me [and my ideas].

“I believe we can play in different systems. Sometimes we defended in a 4-4-2 [vs Ipswich]. We have to play in different systems because nowadays teams change their dynamic. I think our structure, the power of this structure, is to change formation in each game.

“It is a different league and it is harder than in Portugal. But I also have experienced players who play in their national teams. Having a lot of games without time to train means it will be difficult for me, but be tougher for them.”

“We have a lot of games and we are in the beginning of something. We will try to win every game, not just focus on this game and have a clear of idea of how to play.”

United working to hand Amorim his first signing in January, 23-yo PL star being seriously considered – report

                    united-working-to-hand-amorim-his-first-signing-in-january,-23-yo-pl-star-being-seriously-considered-–-report

Manchester United are reportedly working on signing a new left-back for Ruben Amorim, heading into the January transfer window.

Attacking full-backs are perhaps the most crucial cogs in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, and United have struggled with both quality and numbers in that area of the pitch for over a year now.

In particular, injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia left Erik ten Hag with a major selection headache all season.

Amorim inherited the same issue and had to rely on Diogo Dalot to play on the left flank in his first game in charge of United.

After the full-time whistle against Ipswich Town, Amorim talked about Dalot’s struggle to stay in his position. The Portugal international used to drift into the midfield under Ten Hag, but the new head coach wants his left wing-back to stay wide.

The United board certainly see the concern, and are understood to be keen on addressing the position in the winter transfer window.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Red Devils are “working to sign” a new left-back in January.

👀 The names currently considered the most are:
                    ▪️ #AitNouri, closely followed by #CFC too;
                    ▪️ #Chilwell, whose transfer terms would be convenient;
                    ▪️ #Carreras, appreciated by Amorim. pic.twitter.com/8geu9HWFJc

He adds that Rayan Aït-Nouri, Ben Chilwell, and Álvaro Carreras are all being considered “although no decision has been made yet.”

Aït-Nouri, 23, has been one of Wolverhampton Wanderers’s stand-out players in recent seasons and has earned plenty of plaudits for his contribution in the final third.

The Algerian star, who is also being “closely followed” by Chelsea, has been directly involved in five goals in 12 Premier League appearances this term.

Meanwhile, Chilwell finds himself on the fringes of first-team at Chelsea and his “transfer terms would be convenient.”

Amorim also appreciates Carreras, who left United for Benfica in January. After an initial loan stint, the Portuguese outfit secured his services on a permanent basis in the summer. Akin to Aït-Nouri, the Spaniard is also very promising going forward.

Amorim spotted ‘berating’ Man Utd star as he ‘demands new signing’ straight after Ipswich draw

                      amorim-spotted-‘berating’-man-utd-star-as-he-‘demands-new-signing’-straight-after-ipswich-draw

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim was spotted “berating” Joshua Zirkzee in the final minute of their 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring inside two minutes before a long-range deflected effort from Omari Hutchinson gave the Tractor Boys a share of the spoils.

The point pushed Man Utd up one place to 12th in the Premier League table and also marked a small forward step in Amorim’s first match in charge of the Red Devils.

A big theme of discussion this season has been the lack of goals from Man Utd with Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee only scoring four goals between them all campaign.

Zirkzee, who was signed from Serie A side Bologna for £36.5m in the summer transfer window, has already been linked with a move back to Italy with some reports claiming the Man Utd board see him as a ‘lost cause’ already.

And The Sun journalist Jack Rosser has revealed that Amorim “absolutely berated” the Netherlands international for failing to get into the box in the dying embers of their draw against Ipswich.

Sharing what he saw from the press box on Sky Sports Back Pages Podcast, Rosser said: “Yeah, well, I was at Ipswich on Sunday, and I watched him closely. It was interesting to watch his body language and his reaction on the touchline, because he was very frustrated with a lot of his players.

“There was an incident right at the end of the game, 93rd minute, they’re chasing a winner, and he absolutely berated Joshua Zirkzee for just not getting in the penalty area.

“He was strolling around 20 yards outside the penalty box, and he said, look, he basically made him sprint into the box. And he actually referenced that after the game, saying that Zirkzee has to know that he’s got to be in the box, he referenced Jonny Evans not getting close enough to certain players. So he’s not afraid of saying it as he is.”

Amorim left Portman Road on Saturday with the realisation that he definitely needs a new left-back with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming Man Utd “will sign” a player in that position.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Now I am in the position to confirm, once again, that Manchester United will sign a new left-back, left wing-back, let’s call him as you prefer, now Ruben Amorim is playing with the back three, but Man United want to go for a proper left back.

“From what I’m hearing, even after the Ipswich game, the message from Ruben Amorim to Manchester United management is, we need a player in that position in 2025.

“Could be January, could be summer, based on opportunities, based on price, based on several factors, but Man United want to go for a player in that position.”
