Neville pinpoints trait of Amorim’s Man Utd that ‘drives me crazy’ as Keane slams lack of ‘courage’

    neville-pinpoints-trait-of-amorim’s-man-utd-that-‘drives-me-crazy’-as-keane-slams-lack-of-‘courage’

Gary Neville says one particular trait of Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United that “drives me crazy” as Roy Keane claims it shows their lack of “courage”.

Ruben Amorim lost his first game in charge of United on Wednesday as Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates.

The Red Devils looked to nullify the Gunners’ attacking threat, and did so successfully in the main, but struggled to deal with their quality from set pieces, with Mikel Arteta’s side scoring both of their goals from corners.

There was little to cling to for Amorim in terms of attacking positivity though and Neville said after the game that one characteristic of this United side and others in modern football drives him nuts.

“You see this a lot, not just United, but you see wingers get it in a position where and then they stop for some reason, and then they come back and play around and recycle it on the other side,” Neville said on The Overlap. “It drives me absolutely crazy.”

In reaction, his former teammate Roy Keane agreed, explaning that he wishes United’s players would take more of a chance and drive forward, especially when they are trailing by two goals.

“I think there obviously are times for that, particuarly if you are in control of the game… But United, there, when you’re chasing, you almost want to stop, call a time-out and say to the players, I was saying that a couple of weeks ago, ‘you know we need a goal, don’t you?’

“Then almost remind players, ‘oh yeah, you’re 2-0 down!’

“I don’t mind lads losing the ball going forward, but they’re coming back… That’s not bravery, that’s not courage.”

Keane was also frustrated by Marcus Rashford’s “shocking” general play when he came off the bench against Arsenal.

Keane said: “I’ll tell you something, Marcus Rashford came on there. His general play as a footballer is shocking.

“Watch his header there. Have United’s subs given anything since coming on? Nothing. The subs have done nothing.

“Manchester United deserve nothing anyway. They were rubbish. You know what happens with United? They fool you, they fool you. They’re not dynamic.”

On whether there were any positive signs from Man Utd, Keane added: “Not tonight, no.

“I’m really disappointed with Manchester United. I thought the players were going through the motions a little bit. It was easy for Arsenal. The first half was fine but I was expecting a bit more.

“The manager’s probably thinking he thought United were a bit better than this. I was getting really frustrated at the end there.”

O’Neil sack inevitable after Wolves betrayal faced by Gerrard, Allardyce, Rodgers and Parker

      o’neil-sack-inevitable-after-wolves-betrayal-faced-by-gerrard,-allardyce,-rodgers-and-parker

Gary O’Neil was pushed closer to the Wolves sack with a shambolic defeat to Everton as Craig Dawson played the part of Tim Sherwood and Tyrone Mings.

These are the players who scored an own goal in their manager’s final game before they left the job. Dawson would be the first to score two own goals before a sacking if O’Neil is finally shown the door.

Nigel Martyn (Leeds 0-4 Manchester United, September 1996)
A game perhaps better remembered for Eric Cantona missing a first-half penalty, then celebrating a relatively meaningless strike in second-half stoppage-time by standing with his arms held aloft directly in front of the home fans in his final match at Elland Road, was also Howard Wilkinson’s last in charge of Leeds.

But this was no conspiracy, just Martyn having the ball inadvertently booted at his head by Ian Harte when trying to block a Ronny Johnsen effort on the line in the second minute.

Tim Sherwood (Blackburn 0-1 Stockport, October 1996)
Much more egregious was Blackburn captain Sherwood nodding a throw-in past Tim Flowers at the front post under relatively scant pressure, then being substituted before the hour mark.

Ray Harford handed in his resignation three days after the League Cup defeat to third-tier opposition, who were donning their Romania-inspired third kits and would go as far as the semi-finals before eventually being stopped by Middlesbrough.

Des Lyttle (Liverpool 4-2 Nottingham Forest, December 1996)
In a strong season for perceived betrayals, Lyttle might have committed the biggest of the lot. Nottingham Forest had gone 15 games without a win but were hopeful when Kevin Campbell pulled one back at Anfield to make it 2-1 to Liverpool at half-time.

Forest just had to weather a strong start to the second half from the hosts but when a Jason McAteer cross looped up, Lyttle thundered a really quite strange header into the top corner on the line.

Frank Clark resigned a matter of days later, somehow refraining from calling Lyttle out personally in his statement.

Jon Newsome (Manchester United 6-1 Sheffield Wednesday, November 1997)
There are worse ways to bury such acts of treachery. Newsome hid his in the middle of a Manchester United rout at Old Trafford, ricochets and rebounds in the area eventually culminating in the ball bouncing off him and past Kevin Pressman to bring to an end the last permanent post of David Pleat’s managerial career.

Jussi Jaaskelainen (Chelsea 2-2 Bolton, April 2007)
Only Sam Allardyce could resign from a Premier League job after holding the reigning champions to a 2-2 away draw which essentially ruled them out of the title race.

Bolton led, trailed and then equalised, the second Chelsea goal deflecting off the bar and then Jaaskelainen from a Salomon Kalou header. Quite inevitably, only Kevin Nolan ever played more games under Allardyce than the Finnish keeper, who linked up with him again for a bit at West Ham so no hard feelings.

Anton Ferdinand (QPR 1-3 Southampton, November 2012)
It was dubbed El Sackico for good reason; while Mark Hughes left QPR in the immediate aftermath, Nigel Adkins would only last another couple of months before being replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

But this was a resounding final straw for Rangers, with Ferdinand’s late own goal the rotten cherry on an inedible cake.

Titus Bramble (Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United, March 2013)
With four own goals among his Premier League collection, a top-flight career path of Ipswich, Newcastle, Wigan and Sunderland, and an inherent ability to be Titus Bramble, perhaps it was inevitable that Titus Bramble would have at some point marked the final game of one of his managers by sticking one past his own keeper.

There was not much fault to apportion for the centre-half getting a knee on a Robin van Persie shot, even if Bramble was just randomly walking into the Dutchman’s corridor of uncertainty during the end of Martin O’Neill’s tenure.

Steve Taylor (Newcastle 1-3 Bournemouth, March 2016)
About 90 minutes before kick-off at St James’ Park, Newcastle released a statement purporting to be from the players in which recent media reports suggesting they were ‘surprised’ McClaren had not already been sacked were false, adding that the manager had their “full respect”.

Taylor getting a crucial touch on a low Josh King touch within half an hour of kick-off was thus not a great look. McClaren said that only four players – the centre-half not included – showed the requisite “character” in a crushing defeat, five days after which he was gone.

Michael Keane (Norwich 2-1 Everton, January 2022)
      A really quite embarrassing defeat
was fairly literally kickstarted by Keane lazily brandishing a foot at a decent Josh Sargent cross which nevertheless ought to be anticipated slightly better.

Rafael Benitez had been given That Dreaded Vote Of Confidence the previous month but this proved too shambolic a defeat to ignore.

Juraj Kucka (Watford 0-3 Norwich, January 2022)
The Canaries were then sent down the goldmine of Watford, whose brief dalliance with Claudio Ranieri culminated in a chastening defeat featuring an Emmanuel Dennis red card and Kucka shambling the ball past Daniel Bachmann from a low cross about two minutes after coming off the bench.

Chris Mepham (Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth, August 2022)
‘Still 0-0, lads,’ Scott Parker presumably told his players at half-time after witnessing five different Liverpool players score against a beleaguered Bournemouth. Keep it tight, claw back some respect in the second half and move on.

Alternatively, send your keeper scrambling from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross within a minute of the restart en route to one of the heaviest Premier League defeats ever. No wonder Parker basically resigned straight after.

Tyrone Mings (Fulham 3-0 Aston Villa, October 2022)
In terms of narrative, this will take some beating. Mings had been stripped of the Villa armband in the summer by Steven Gerrard, who felt that “not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team”.

Mings was then dropped for the season opener but was firmly back in the fold by the time a truly dreadful Villa visited Fulham. The defender at least waited until the 83rd minute before exacting the ultimate revenge of diverting a dangerous cross into his own net.

Gerrard described himself as a “fighter” who “will never, ever quit anything whether it’s football or in life,” then was sacked before having to endure the most awkward of bus rides home.

Jan Bednarek (Southampton 1-2 Wolves, February 2023)
Let him never be forgiven. Does he realise what he took away from us? Does he care? Does Nathan Jones still have nothing against Welsh women?

Southampton were leading with a one-man advantage after Mario Lemina was sent off for Wolves, but Bednarek summarily failing to sort out his feet led to a goal-line clearance losing the last 13 letters of the phrase. It triggered an unlikely comeback capped by Joao Gomes in the 87th minute.

Jones said the Lemina red card “was to our detriment because it made it a free hit for them and added pressure on us”.

Daniel Iversen (Crystal Palace 2-1 Leicester, April 2023)
Leicester waited bizarrely long to tell Brendan Rodgers things just weren’t working out in 2022/23. Steve Cooper wouldn’t have minded 28 games to prove himself, nor Dean Smith being appointed his replacement to make his work look even better.

The Foxes finally felt compelled to act when Roy Hodgson capped his Palace return with a win sparked by Iversen’s back foolishly nudging a stunning Eberechi Eze free-kick over the line after it clattered the crossbar, before Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stoppage-time winner.

“A proper Manchester lad”: United community mourn loss of Busby Babe

        “a-proper-manchester-lad”:-united-community-mourn-loss-of-busby-babe

Former Manchester United fullback Terrence “Tony” Young has died at the age of 71.

Young was born just a few miles from Old Trafford in Urmston and played for the club between 1969-1976, making 97 appearances.

He joined the club as an academy member in July 1968 and made his senior debut versus West Ham in 1970 at just 17 years of age.

The defender was the 82nd academy graduate to successfully make it from the youth team to a place in the first team.

Young was a fullback capable of playing on either side and played a crucial role in the club’s promotion back to the First Division in the 1974/1975 season.

He would leave for Charlton Athletic in 1976 and would then go on to represent York City, calling an end to his career in 1978.

An official statement from the club’s website read that “Manchester United is saddened by the news” of his death and that “our thoughts are with Tony’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

        — Manchester United (@ManUtd) December 4, 2024

Former teammate Sammy McIlroy penned an emotional tribute to his former teammate than can be seen on the club’s website.

McIlroy joined United in 1969 and spent 13 years at the club, sharing seven seasons with Young.

He wrote, “it’s terribly sad to hear of his passing. I remember Tony had a massive reputation as a winger when he first joined the club, and unlike some, he seemed to thrive under the pressure.”

“He was a proper Manchester lad – hard! He trained the way he played as well.”

The former Northern Ireland international went on to describe Young as the type of character every team needs and the sort that every manager wants to coach.

United dressing room makes controversial decision that “not everyone” happy about – The Athletic

Manchester United signing Noussair Mazraoui reportedly refused to wear an Adidas jacket in support of the LGBTQ+ community ahead of last Sunday’s match against Everton.

Consequently, the club decided it would be for the best for all the players to avoid wearing it as they walked out onto the Old Trafford pitch.

The Premier League has run a programme that has seen captains wear rainbow coloured armbands in the month of December so far as a show of support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The Athletic report that United have worn a pride-themed jersey to warm up ahead of games during the Rainbow Laces campaign over the last two years.

This year however, they “were only planning a walk-out jacket but Morocco international Mazraoui, a £15m summer signing from Bayern Munich, told his team-mates he was not prepared to wear the outfit, citing his Muslim faith as the reason.”

To not draw attention to Mazraoui, “the team then decided that no players would wear the tracksuit” and the decision was taken only a matter of hours before kick off.

“Not everyone in the dressing room was happy with this decision.”

The makers of the jacket, Adidas, are thought to be disappointed with the United players’ decision but have not commented publicly on the issue.

When asked to comment, the club officially commented, “Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion.”

However they did qualify this statement by claiming, “players are entitled to hold their own individual opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, and these may sometimes differ from the club’s position.”

The Rainbow Devils group was set up in 2019 with the aim of including and increasing awareness of the large LGBTQ+ community who support the club.

In a statement they claimed that they “will continue to work with Manchester United to support inclusivity, through the One Love initiative and others, as we all continue our work to ensure all LGBTQ+ people feel safe and welcome at Old Trafford, both on and off the pitch.”

The Red Devils won the FootballvHomophobia professional club of the year award last February for their work to combat prejudice. It is an issue they take very seriously indeed as the try to lead the fight for equality in the game.

Amorim reveals four Man Utd players have a ‘time limit’ as he pinpoints Arsenal ‘shame’

            amorim-reveals-four-man-utd-players-have-a-‘time-limit’-as-he-pinpoints-arsenal-‘shame’

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has revealed that four of his players currently have time limits on the amount of football they can play.

The Red Devils were beaten for the fifth time in 14 Premier League matches at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night as Arsenal won 2-0 to move to seven points behind Liverpool, who drew 3-3 at Newcastle.

It was Man Utd’s first loss under Amorim after the Portuguese boss had led them to two wins against Everton and Bodo/Glimt and a draw against Ipswich in his first three matches in charge.

Man Utd have suffered with a number of injuries this season but Amorim has faced a selection headache in recent weeks as a number of his players return.

Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Leny Yoro all played their part against Arsenal but the Man Utd boss was careful not to overwork the quartet.

Amorim told reporters: “It’s not because I like to change all the time but because I like to have all the squad fit.

“So for example, Harry Maguire has a time limit, Tyrell Malacia has a time limit, Mason Mount has a time limit, Leny Yoro has a real time limit.

“So we have to manage winning games, a different methodology, a different way of playing, more meters to press.

“Tomorrow we have to assess the guys and [if] they have a little bit risk of injury, they will not play. So we have to have everyone to work, to play and to improve the squad.”

Arsenal scored both of their goals from set-pieces through Jurrien Timber and William Saliba. On how corners changed the game for Arsenal, Amorim said: “We already knew that it would be a tough game. I think the corners changed the game, the set-pieces. Then we lost the momentum, we tried everything then to control the game again.

“You feel it in the first half, in the environment of the stadium, that we were causing problems. We need to improve in a lot of areas of our game, but we were controlling the game.”

On Arsenal’s prowess from corners, Amorim added: “They are very good because they have a lot of time working on that. Especially on that, they have big players for that, so it is a strategy, and we had two weeks to work on that. We tried to do it but we know every team in the Premier League is suffering with set-pieces.

“It was a shame because we were not playing very well but also Arsenal was not playing very well.”

83% aerial duels won, 4 clearances: Returning United loanee is ray of light in disappointing loss

Manchester United’s Rhys Bennett made a return to the Fleetwood Town line up after a month and a half out of action.

The English defender started his loan well for the League Two side, playing in six out of seven games from the start but this was his first appearance since the 19th of October, away to Port Vale.

He picked up an injury but had been impressing the locals and the BBC reported that the young defender was popular for his “old school” approach to defending.

Fleetwood disappointingly lost 4-2 at home to Doncaster Rovers despite having 63% of the ball.

The Cods also had 11 shots to their opponent’s 10.

Bennett’s performance must be judged in the context that his side conceded four goals and he was one of the two centre backs, however, it was also his first appearance for weeks.

He only received a score of 6.4 on Sofascore but had some good individual statistics for his night’s work at Highbury Stadium.

The youngster made four clearances on the night, completing one interception and one tackle.

The Youth Cup winning captain also battled hard as he won two out of his three ground duels and five out of his six aerial battles.

He had 63 touches of the ball and completed 37 out of 47 passes for a completion rate of 79%.

The 21 year old attempted 10 long balls to launch his team forward but could only connect with four of them.

Whilst the result is far from what Bennett would have hoped for, it is a roadmap back for him and he will hope like his academy teammate, Sonny Aljofree at Accrington Stanley, he can now build up consecutive games in the first team in League Two.

Fleetwood Town will next be in action when they travel to Swindon Town on Saturday afternoon.

Roy Keane has hit out at Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford for his “shocking” performance after coming on as substitute in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal.

Goals from Arsenal defenders Jurrien Timber and William Saliba saw the Red Devils lose for the first time under new boss Ruben Amorim, while the Gunners maintained their recent good form to close the gap on leaders Liverpool to seven points.

Man Utd dropped back into the bottom half following the defeat at the Emirates Stadium and could fall further down the Premier League table if Fulham and Bournemouth win on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils were struggling for Premier League goals before Amorim arrived as the new head coach but a 4-0 win at Everton, which saw both Rashford and summer signing Joshua Zirkzee score a brace, gave Man Utd fans hope that they had turned a corner.

But Man Utd struggled to create at Arsenal with just five shots all game and Amorim tried to give the Red Devils more attacking options on 59 minutes when he brought Rashford and Zirkzee on for Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho.

It didn’t work and Man Utd legend Keane was frustrated at Rashford’s “shocking” general play when he came off the bench against Arsenal.

Speaking during a live watchalong on The Overlap, Keane said: “I’ll tell you something, Marcus Rashford came on there. His general play as a footballer is shocking.

And former Man Utd striker Dimitar Berbatov was not impressed by the Red Devils and urged them to go “back to the training ground to fix the mistakes”.

Berbatov said on Amazon Prime: “I admit that in the second half, the storm was there for United. Ruben Amorim said earlier that a storm was going to come for his team and it came tonight.

“The set-pieces were a big problem for them and Arsenal scored twice from them. Now it’s back to the training ground to fix the mistakes.”

“Disappointed” United star makes big promise to United fans after humbling loss to Arsenal

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has vowed to the club’s supporters that he and his teammates will improve offensively and fully familiarise themselves with the demands of Ruben Amorim’s style of play.

De Ligt spoke to MUTV after United’s 2-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal.

United were undone by some masterful corner kick routines devised by the Gunners’ coaching staff. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both scored from the dead-ball situations to clinch all three points for the hosts.

In his post-match press conference, Amorim admitted that Arsenal’s prowess in set-pieces was a big problem for the Red Devils.

Despite the defeat, De Ligt produced a decent performance. He was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as his header was kept out by a diving David Raya.

After the final whistle, De Ligt told club media [via Manchester Evening News], “In the defensive phase, the amount of chances we conceded without the set plays [was good]. In the end, we played a little bit more offensive and conceded some chances at the end.”

“But in general, we have to – and we will – offensively improve. We need to know what everyone is doing and we could have hurt them much more. We’re still quite early with the new coach but there are still positives. But overall, I’m really disappointed with the lack of points.”

“As you mentioned, we’re on the road to improve as a team and I think the manager said it also: maybe if we do it a certain way we have a bigger chance of getting results right now.”

The Netherlands international added, “But in the future, we will stay the same and won’t improve. I think the way we are going now is obviously not perfect yet and everybody has to improve a lot and get used to the new system, but you can see certain things that are improving.”

“But in the end, we are Manchester United and it’s easy – it’s not good enough.”

“We know that, we will work hard, we have ti improve and we have an important game in a few days.”

United return to action at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

0 shots on target, 0 key passes, 0 dribbles, 0 crosses: United’s £60m man puts in a truly invisible performance vs Arsenal

Manchester United’s Mason Mount put in a bitterly disappointing performance against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Mount has suffered from numerous serious injuries since his move to United in 2023 but new coach Ruben Amorim has sung his praises since arriving at the club.

Nonetheless, the Englishman’s career at Old Trafford is yet to spark into life and based on tonight’s showing, looks unlikely to ever do so.

In the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, Mount was selected to start behind Rasmus Hojlund in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

The former Chelsea man was given a rating of 6.7 from Sofascore and was subbed off after 58 minutes of play.

Mount carried very little goal threat as he had an Expected Goals of 0.03 and an Expected Assist of 0.01.

He had one shot that went harmlessly wide of the goal in what was his only real contribution to the game.

United had over 50% possession of the ball in the first half but practically none of the play came through United’s number 7 as he only had 15 touches of the ball.

He did complete 91% of his passes but this must be framed in the context that he only attempted 11 passes the whole time he was on the pitch.

Mount was also ineffective in trying to win back possession as he only won one out of his three ground duels and lost his only aerial battle.

He also failed to contribute any dribbles or crosses in the entire time he was on the pitch.

He did manage to get a block in but made two fouls in the match.

Amorim’s previous comments clearly suggest that Mount will have plenty more chances to prove himself but after 30 appearances for the Red Devils, fans are still left scratching their head about what he actually brings to the table.

91% passing, 100% duels won, 3 clearances: United star had one of his best games, is becoming integral to Amorim’s plans

Manchester United failed to contain Arsenal’s threat from set-pieces and eventually succumbed to a 0-2 defeat at the Emirates on Wednesday.

This was Ruben Amorim’s first defeat since taking charge and looking back, he could have instructed his team to attack more considering how below-par the hosts looked from open play, especially in the first half.

However, the Gunners won 13 corners to United’s 0 and that was what ultimately turned the game in their favour, something the visitors should have been much more aware of.

While the attacking players were almost invisible, the defenders put up quite a good shift and Matthijs de Ligt came as close as any to helping the Red Devils reduce the deficit.

De Ligt had United’s best chance of the game

His powerful header from a looping free-kick from Bruno Fernandes was fantastically saved by David Raya. He has emerged as one of United’s potent weapons from set-pieces.

The Netherlands international had to endure a tough start to life as a United player but against Mikel Arteta’s men, he looked calm and composed despite playing in two different positions during the 90 minutes.

He started as the right centre-back and once Leny Yoro came on for his debut, the former Bayern Munich man shifted back to the middle.

This was one of his best displays in red and the fact that it came under trying circumstances will do his confidence a world of good moving forward.

The 25-year-old was good on the ball, ending the game with a 91% passing accuracy, completing 50 out of 55 passes while having 66 touches.

De Ligt had a good game defensively

Three of his five attempted long balls found their mark as well as he tried to release Rasmus Hojlund early but the Dane’s control under pressure let him down numerous times.

The Dutch star was solid defensively, winning all his ground and air duels while making three clearances and one tackle. He also blocked one shot and completed one interception (stats via sofascore).

With Yoro back, De Ligt is likely to play in the middle more often as it suits him a lot more than playing out wide where his lack of pace might get exposed at times.

Maguire’s return from injury also means the boss can now rotate him more often and keep him fresh with the former Ajax captain starting all games under Amorim.
