Sir Jim Ratcliffe says ‘mediocre’ Man Utd ‘like the country’ as co-owner responds to fan backlash

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says “mediocre” Manchester United are “like the country” as the Red Devils co-owner defended his “unpopular decisions” that have sparked anger in the fanbase.

Ratcliffe became the minority shareholder of the Premier League giants at the start of the year and has overseen controversial changes at Old Trafford including bringing Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role to an end and laying off 250 members of staff.

The latest cost-cutting measure has seen ticket price rise to £66 per match without concessions for children or pensioners.

The decision led to a protest ahead last weekend’s clash with Everton with United claiming in a statement that the price hikes were part of wider measures aiming to put the club ‘on a stronger financial footing’.

Ratcliffe spoke to the United We Stand fanzine to clarify the club’s position further, likening his “unpopular decisions” to those currently being made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

He said: “To get Manchester United to where we need to get it — it’s a bit like the country.

“We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions then nothing much is going to change.

“We won’t get everything right and it won’t happen overnight, but we haven’t been sat on our hands for nine months. There has been a lot of change.

“Here at Carrington (United’s training complex) as you can see. We didn’t waste any time to get Old Trafford on the agenda. Changes in the football and executive structure. New players. (Head coach) Ruben (Amorim) has arrived.

“We still have a long way to go and we still have a number of difficult decisions to make, but we have to do that for the better.

“The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so. Manchester United has become mediocre.

“It’s not elite and it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. That’s what it used to be under Alex (Ferguson).

“There is major change to come to achieve elite status. There has already been huge change.”

United last won the Premier League in 2013 and posted net losses of £113.2million for the 12 months ending June 30, 2024.

Ratcliffe says recruitment has “not been good enough” during that period.

“We need to sweat every pound so that we have more capacity for the investment in players,” he said. “Those are the big-ticket items which take up time.

“The other point here is how you grow the amount of money that you can spend on players. You can run the business more efficiently. And you can grow the top line.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe defends recent controversial club decision as he dubs United “mediocre”

      sir-jim-ratcliffe-defends-recent-controversial-club-decision-as-he-dubs-united-“mediocre”

Manchester United co-owner has said that the club has become “mediocre” as he insisted that more difficult and unpopular decisions will be needed to get the Red Devils back to where they want to be.

This development comes amid mounting pressure on Ratcliffe following the removal of concessions for what the club claims are the remaining 3% of unsold tickets for Premier League matches, alongside the introduction of a minimum price of £66.

This move sparked fan protests at Old Trafford before last weekend’s 4-0 win over Everton.

Ratcliffe spoke to Andy Mitten’s ‘United We Stand’ fanzine and defended the decision, as he pointed out that it’s aimed at ultimately improving the club’s fortunes.

He also gave his verdict on other aspects of United such as recruitment and data analysis, which he labelled as “mediocre.”

Ratcliffe told Mitten [via The Athletic], “To get Manchester United to where we need to get it — it’s a bit like the country.”

“We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions then nothing much is going to change. We won’t get everything right and it won’t happen overnight, but we haven’t been sat on our hands for nine months. There has been a lot of change. Here at Carrington as you can see. We didn’t waste any time to get Old Trafford on the agenda. Changes in the football and executive structure. New players. Ruben (Amorim) has arrived.”

“We still have a long way to go and we still have a number of difficult decisions to make but we have to do that for the better. The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so. Manchester United has become mediocre. It’s not elite and it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. That’s what it used to be under Alex. There is major change to come to achieve elite status. There has already been huge change.”

“We have a fantastic coach. He’s intelligent, thoughtful.” Ratcliffe continued, “We have a great chief executive in Omar. We’re on the way, but this won’t happen overnight. There are financial issues which we need to address because we’ve inherited a financial situation that only time will solve.”

When asked what are his long-term plans for tickets and whether he is concerned that the recent price hikes exclude young and old fans, the INEOS billionaire responded, “It’s an emotive one, ticketing, but we have to have some benchmarks with ticketing.”

“We must make sure that we look after the community because at the end of the day it’s their football club. We need to make sure that people who are genuine supporters can afford to go. Maybe their circumstances don’t allow them to spend a fortune on tickets.”

“I 100 per cent get that. But we have to balance that and optimise our ticket income because it feeds back into how do we win the Champions League or Premier League. I’m very cognisant that we have to look after the community because it’s the community’s team, but equally I want to optimise the revenue from people who can afford it.”

Mitten put it to Ratcliffe that supporters are worried this is just the start of more price raises over the next few months and years. In particular, Mitten asked the British businessman about the growing perception that the controversial decision is taking advantage of the working-class residents of the city of Manchester.

He responded, “I understand that. I was brought up on a council estate in Manchester, I absolutely get that. I don’t want to end up in a position where the genuine local fans can’t afford to come, but I do want to optimise the ticketing. We need to find a balance. And you can’t be popular all the time either.”

“Here, we’re talking about three per cent of the tickets. That’s not the issue. The issue, as you say, is whether this is the thin edge of the wedge. I don’t think it makes sense for a Manchester United ticket to cost less than a ticket to see Fulham.”

On data analysis and recruitment, Ratcliffe stated, “We’ve not been good enough at recruitment, you probably agree with that. And until we’re as good as anyone in the world, then it’s not good enough for Manchester United. We must have the best recruitment in the world. Data Analysis comes alongside recruitment. It doesn’t really exist here. We’re still in the last century on data analysis here.”

“There’s an immense amount of useful data that we can get from data analysis and we’re in the ‘very poor’ bracket with data analysis here. These things don’t happen overnight. You can’t just flick a light switch and sort out recruitment. It’s all about people and we need to find the right people.”

“The other big one is we need to run the club efficiently and well. We need to sweat every pound so that we have more capacity for the investment in players. Those are the big-ticket items which take up time. The other point here is how you grow the amount of money that you can spend on players. You can run the business more efficiently. And you can grow the top line.”

Ratcliffe divulged that he enjoys a “very good” relationship with the unpopular Glazers, who are still majority owners of United.

He said that the Glazers get a lot of very bad press but despite this, they are United fans who have the club’s best interests at heart.

On United’s league position following several poor performances and results, Ratcliffe noted, “I don’t enjoy losing. I find that very difficult. I quite like the picture of Pep Guardiola (with marks on his head). He does not like losing.”

“Our results have not been fantastic and I don’t like where we are in the league. I like the challenge. It’s one of the biggest challenges in the sporting world, taking United back to where the club should be. That’s a very rewarding challenge if we get there, but it’s a rocky road with ups and downs.”

“The objective is unchanged. The measure of success unchanged. We always need to be challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League. The size of the task is considerable and to get there, a lot of things have to change at United.”

Confirmed United XI vs Forest: Yoro, Mainoo, Amad, Ugarte, Garnacho start, Marcus Rashford does not

        confirmed-united-xi-vs-forest:-yoro,-mainoo,-amad,-ugarte,-garnacho-start,-marcus-rashford-does-not

Leny Yoro starts his first competitive match for Manchester United this evening as the Red Devils welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford.

Yoro got minutes against Arsenal in midweek and performed well. Fans will be excited to finally welcome him to his new home ground after missing the start of the season with a broken metatarsal.

He comes in for Harry Maguire, who drops to the bench.

With Ruben Amorim rotating his sides regularly, it was widely expected that Marcus Rashford would return to the starting XI today, having been rested against the Gunners. But he does not, with Amorim preferring Alejandro Garnacho.

He is joined in attack by Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund.

Despite Amorim hinting he would be rested, Manu Ugarte starts in central midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Once again there is no place for Christian Eriksen or Casemiro.

In defence, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez join Yoro in the back three, with Amad and Diogo Dalot the wingbacks.

Martinez is returning from suspension and replaces Noussair Mazraoui, who is rested.

        Andre Onana is in goal.

There is a strong subs bench at Amorim’s disposal, including Altay Bayindir, Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Mazraoui, Casemiro, Eriksen, Mason Mount, Rashford and Josh Zirkzee.

Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are injured.

There is no place for Antony in the squad.

Fans left in the dark and bewildered as u21s knocked out of international cup with no coverage from club

          fans-left-in-the-dark-and-bewildered-as-u21s-knocked-out-of-international-cup-with-no-coverage-from-club

Manchester United u21s hosted Sparta Prague B in the Premier League International Cup on Saturday at Carrington.

It was an important must-win match if United were to stand any chance of advancing out of the group stage, but it saw fans completely cut off in their support of the famed United academy.

Played behind closed doors at Carrington, United provided no coverage of the match anywhere, even on social media or score updates on their webpage, leaving United fans following Sparta’s Czech language X account for updates on the match as the visiting club treated their club members to a live stream of the fixture.

On the pitch, it started well for United with Ethan Wheatley providing an early lead after being played in behind the Sparta backline by James Scanlon to chip the ball over the keeper with a neat finish.

Wheatley then came close to doubling the lead when he forced a good save from Joeri Heerkens in the Sparta goal.

Things took a turn late in the half though as the visitors drew the match level in the 38th minute with a close range finish from Hynek Hruška.

Just a minute later, Radek Šiler gave Sparta the lead with a long range effort finding the corner.

A nightmare three minutes was then capped off when Hynek Hruška converted the cross delivered into the United area to make it 1-3 going into half time.

On the hour mark, Dan Gore threatened with a driving run into the Sparta box which ended with a rebound that looked like Wheatley would latch onto, but a moment of last-ditch defending saw the ball cleared before the United striker could pounce.

Travis Binnion turned to the bench with attacking changes which saw the introduction of Chido Obi, Ethan Ennis, and Malachi Sharpe.

The latter of the three created an opening early after his introduction but ultimately the strike towards goal was blocked by the Sparta skipper.

Despite the changes, the second half ended scoreless from both sides to give Sparta Prague B the 1-3 victory.

The loss means United sit down the table with only two points from three matches and are officially eliminated from the Premier League International Cup with a final group match with Nordsjælland to come in January.

United: Graczyk, Missin, Kukonki (Obi 75), Kingdon, Fredricson (Munro 46), Murray, T. Fletcher (Devaney 75), Scanlon (Sharpe 63), Gore, Williams (Ennis 63), Wheatley

Van Nistelrooy targets ‘freakish’ Man Utd star in January as ‘key asset’ in Leicester relegation fight

            van-nistelrooy-targets-‘freakish’-man-utd-star-in-january-as-‘key-asset’-in-leicester-relegation-fight

Ruud van Nistelrooy wants to raid former club Manchester United to sign a ‘freakish’ star he sees as being a ‘key asset’ in Leicester avoiding relegation.

Van Nistelrooy only joined United as assistant manager in the summer was was let go following the arrival of Rube Amorim after a brief interim spell in charge.

The former striker beat Leicester twice while in charge of the Red Devils before being named the new Foxes manager, beating West Ham 3-1 in his first game in charge on Tuesday.

His side were under pressure for the majority of that game despite winning three points and Van Nistelrooy confirmed this week that he would have money to spend in January.

He added: “We had a conversation about that (transfers) in London before I signed. We spoke about that, the winter window, and also towards the summer.

“We also said that at the same time there’s no rush to do things. I agree with that. The squad is now getting opportunities to prove themselves over this month, which is a great month to work together and play together. There’s time after that to make a good assessment when I’ve seen the players with my own eyes, and we can make decisions in January.”

The Sun claim he’s keen on United academy graduate Toby Collyer, who impressed Erik ten Hag enough with his “freakish running stats” in training to be given his senior debut in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City in August.

Van Nistelrooy is ‘planning on using his contacts at Old Trafford’ to sign the 20-year-old midfielder, who joined the United academy from Brighton two years ago.

The United boss don’t want to sell Collyer but ‘could be open-minded to a loan move, especially to a manager who they know will give him opportunities in the first-team’.

Collyer also replaced Casemiro at half-time in United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in September, and impressed some former Red Devils players working for MUTV.

Former defender David May commented: “There was a lot of pressure coming on for the young kid.

“For five or minutes maybe he was a bit in awe, I thought he conducted himself really well, I thought he was brilliant.”

Former academy defender Phil Bardsley was in agreement, adding: “Its not an easy fixture to come in, being 2-0 down, it shows the trust manager has in young players.

“He should be proud, coming into a hostile game, it was tough, he stood his own, he was good in there.

“Once he got a foothold in the game he didn’t look out of place. To get the experience to play in a game like this was fantastic.”

Man Utd transfers: Amorim ‘asks’ Ratcliffe for double deal with £33m ‘offer’ for PL ‘top’ target ‘prepared’

              man-utd-transfers:-amorim-‘asks’-ratcliffe-for-double-deal-with-33m-‘offer’-for-pl-‘top’-target-‘prepared’

According to reports, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has ‘asked’ INEOS to sign two ‘jewels’ from Porto in a surprise double deal.

Amorim has had a mixed start at Man Utd as he has one win, one draw and a loss in his three Premier League matches. This run leaves them 13th in the table and seven points adrift of the Champions League places.

39-year-old Amorim could push the Red Devils to make several signings in January and next summer as he looks to put his stamp on their squad and they are already being linked with numerous potential targets.

One of their priorities will be to sign a left-back as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have been dogged by injuries in recent seasons.

A report in Spain claims Man Utd have ‘turned their attention’ to 25-year-old Francisco Moura, who only joined Portuguese giants Porto in the summer.

Moura has been in fine form this season as he’s grabbed seven assists in his 20 appearances across all competitions.

READ: Sancho (and Beckham) ‘true colours’ shown in pathetic Manchester United reporting

The report also claims Amorim has ‘asked’ to sign Samu Aghehowa – formerly Omorodion – as he ‘wants’ Porto’s two ‘jewels’.

‘Moura’s contract with Porto until 2029 will require a significant investment from United if they are to complete his signing in the January transfer window.

‘Aghehowa, who joined Porto from Atletico Madrid, is seen as a future option to strengthen the attack. With a contract until 2029, his transfer would also require a considerable financial effort.

‘United’s interest in the duo is evidence of their support for the new manager, who is looking to balance the squad with young and talented players.

‘Although other options such as Alphonso Davies and Milos Kerkez are on the table, Moura and Aghehowa represent concrete targets for a transfer window that promises to be key in the team’s rebuilding. The final decision will depend on negotiations with Porto and United’s willingness to invest in these talents.’

Another report in Spain claims Man Utd are ‘preparing’ a 40 million euro (around £33m) ‘offer’ to sign Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi, who has been made their ‘top target’.

‘Despite having a contract with Crystal Palace until June 2026, the possibility that Manchester United will take advantage of this contractual situation to make his transfer cheaper is real.

‘Under normal conditions, his transfer could exceed 60 million euros, but the Red Devils would be willing to offer 40 million, an amount that, in their eyes, represents a great market opportunity.

‘The operation, however, will depend on the negotiations between both clubs and the player’s will.’

Amorim favourite reveals secret behind his special instant connection with the United boss

                amorim-favourite-reveals-secret-behind-his-special-instant-connection-with-the-united-boss

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has revealed that he and new head coach Ruben Amorim share the same view of football, which has enabled them to connect.

Amorim was appointed United boss last month as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese coach has so far overseen four matches across the Premier League and the Europa League. He has won two, drawn one and lost one.

Martinez has regularly been picked by Amorim as part of United’s three-man defence. The Argentina international was a big miss in mid-week as United slipped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Since his move from Ajax in the summer of 2022, Martinez has proven to be popular with supporters, who have lauded his no-nonsense style of play and never-say-die attitude.

In a sit-down with club media, Martinez revealed that these traits have enabled him to connect with Amorim, who is more or less the same.

“It’s the way I like to play, the way of playing football: the passion, the energy.”

“You know, if you have that with me, it’s like you connect quickly. He has many, many good things. I think he demands what the club demands, which is good.”

“I like his passion, his energy, the way he wants to play – good in possession, in defending. I think he’s good – also the staff, the energy around [the place], it [has been] so good, yeah.”

On Amorim’s preference to deploy three central defenders and wing-backs, Martinez said, “It’s with three in the back but, during the game, you have principles.”

“Sometimes you are with four at the back, you are sometimes with five. It depends how they attack, how we attack, how we are in defence. But yeah, I like it.”

“I like the intensity, I like the energy. I like, for example, how he wants to play in possession and without possession as well. So, yeah, I feel great in this system.”

United are back in action later today when they host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Kick-off is at 17:30 GMT.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim responds to ‘abandoned’ LGBTQ+ plans after one star ‘refused’ to take part

                  man-utd:-ruben-amorim-responds-to-‘abandoned’-lgbtq+-plans-after-one-star-‘refused’-to-take-part

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has responded after his players did not wear LGBTQ+ jackets following Noussair Mazraoui’s ‘refusal’ to take part.

Premier League clubs showed their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport between November 29 and December as they participated in charity Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

However, there has been controversy as Ipswich Town midfielder Sam Morsy refused to wear the armband, while England international Marc Guehi risked a suspension by writing ‘I love Jesus’ on his.

Unlike Morsy, Man Utd pair Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire wore the rainbow armband but plans to show support in other ways were ‘abandoned’.

The Red Devils squad have previously worn themed gear in support of the LGBTQ+ community. They had intended to do so against Everton but The Athletic revealed that idea was scrapped just ‘hours before the game’ after Noussair Mazraoui ‘refused’ to take part.

It is noted that the Morocco international ‘was not prepared to wear the outfit, citing his Muslim faith as the reason’. Therefore, his teammates decided that no player would wear them so Mazraoui would not be ‘the only one seen publicly to be refusing to wear it’.

A Man Utd statement read: “Man Utd welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion.

“We demonstrate these principles through a range of activities, including support for our Rainbow Devils supporters’ club, and campaigns to celebrate our LGBTQ+ fans and combat all forms of discrimination.

“Players are entitled to hold their own individual opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, and these may sometimes differ from the club’s position.”

Commenting on this situation, Amorim confirmed that it was a “group decision” and there were “three difficult things to manage”.

“It was a group decision as players, as it should be,” Amorim said.

“There are three difficult things to manage. On one side it’s club values and I think all can agree that it’s not an issue but then you have religion, which you have to respect.

“It’s our values to respect other opinions. And then the third thing is the group thing. I won’t leave Nous [Mazraoui] alone, we’re a team. The majority of the players believe in one thing but they saw one guy alone and said, ‘Let’s be together’.

“It’s three things we have to manage and respect. It’s a hard issue to address. I think we did it in a good way. This club represents… we need to respect everything but we also respect the religion of Nous and his culture.”

                    united-homing-in-on-another-of-the-world’s-top-16-year-olds,-will-train-at-carrington-next-week-–-report

Charlotte FC and USYNT wonderkid Nimfasha Berchimas is reportedly set to train with Manchester United next week, with a possible transfer firmly on the cards.

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his 27.7% partial investment into the club earlier this year, United have placed greater emphasis on signing young, talented and hungry players who can then be nurtured to potentially become world-class superstars.

Indeed, during the summer window, United secured the services of youngsters like Chido Obi-Martin, Samuel Lusale, Sekou Kone and others, who have all been integrated into the youth ranks at Carrington.

Now, journalist Ben Jacobs reports that United are interested in 16-year-old Berchimas.

According to the reliable Jacobs, “Charlotte FC and U.S. youth international standout forward Nimfasha Berchimas will visit Manchester United next week to train and experience their environment, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.”

“Berchimas, 16, is one of the brightest young talents in his age group in the country and has been turning heads in Europe. United have been following his progress and an official transfer bid could follow in the future, sources say.”

“The trip was planned before Ruben Amorim took over as manager but it was very much driven by new United sporting regime, sources add.”

Jacobs notes that United’s technical director Jason Wilcox is “heavily involved” with the promotion of youngsters from academy level to the first team.

It’s understood that Bayern Munich hosted Berchimas for a training stint in 2022 but a switch to the Allianz Arena never materialised. It’s currently unclear whether the Bavaria outfit are still keen on adding the teenager to their ranks.

A forward by trade, Berchimas primarily plays as a right-footed left-winger. He made his debut for the Charlotte FC senior team in February 2024, becoming the ninth-youngest player in MLS history, during their 1-0 victory over New York City FC.

He has made three first-team appearances in 2024.

Berchimas has already represented the USA at the youth level, notably standing out during the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Manchester United reportedly face competition from Real Madrid for one of their key transfer targets, AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

The left back position is seen as an area where United must improve on and with Luke Shaw suffering yet another relapse in his return to fitness, it seems that they may need to even sign someone in January.

The club reportedly have a six man shortlist as they aim to solve the glaring issue in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

The Red Devils have been tracking numerous players such as Alphonso Davies and Wolverhampton’s Rayan Aït-Nouri but one player they have held a long term interest in is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

The Hungarian has impressed in the Premier League with his marauding performances and it was reported back in September that United would go head-to-head with eternal rivals Liverpool for his signature.

They could have rivals from further afield however, as Spanish outlet Defensa Central report that “Real Madrid are on the lookout for the big Premier League star” and they are following the development of the player.

It is reported that Madrid’s interest in United target Davies is “becoming more and more complicated, and the Los Blancos have begun to explore alternatives.”

“One of the names that has gained strength is that of Milos Kerkez, a young talent from Bournemouth.”

Madrid are currently unhappy with the form of youngster Fran Garcia and believe physical problems have taken their toll on Ferland Mendy.

The European champions are said to be keen on the full back as he “not only stands out for his present, but also for his projection.”

Fabrizio Romano reported back in July that United had “genuine” interest in Kerkez, so perhaps Madrid’s attraction to the player could act as a trigger for the Red Devils to make their move in the winter, especially as it seems that Davies may in fact, sign a new deal at Bayern Munich.

Growing interest in Kerkez is understandable as he has been in fine form this season once again, playing 14 games, scoring one goal and providing two assists for Bournemouth, who sit ninth in the table.
