Man Utd transfer blow as Liverpool ‘most likely destination’ for Ruben Amorim’s top target

Liverpool are the most realistic Premier League destination for Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies when he becomes a free agent, according to reports.

Davies is out of contract at the end of the season and attracting interest from a host of clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Madrid have been linked with the Canadian international for several years but are now competing with the Red Devils for his signature.

New United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly made a new left-wing-back his top priority and there are not many better out there than Davies.

However, it appears that the prospect of signing the 24-year-old on a free transfer appeals to nearly every top club in Europe, while Bayern are working hard to agree on a new contract.

Liverpool being added to the mix indicates that they are looking to move on from Andy Robertson, who has made 317 appearances for them in seven-and-a-half years.

Competition from Madrid and Bayern will be fierce but the Reds are reportedly ‘the most plausible Premier League destination for him’.

This is according to The Athletic, who says Barcelona are also keen but lack the necessary funds, while Chelsea and Arsenal are ‘monitoring’ the player.

United’s interest appears to be genuine but their current ‘upheaval’ and ‘their current lack of involvement in the Champions League’ means Davies sees them as a ‘less attractive’ option.

    The report claims:

Several big European clubs have shown an interest in signing Davies.

The most high-profile of these are Real Madrid. They and the player’s representatives reached an understanding in February over what the terms might be of any potential transfer, were he to have signed for them for a fee last summer or as a free agent with a signing-on bonus this coming summer.

Barcelona have also shown interest but there are serious doubts as to whether they could afford Davies. Madrid’s arch-rivals are still operating above their La Liga-imposed salary limit and need to raise funds to register summer 2024 signings Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the current league season.

Manchester United have previously been linked with Davies, but sources close to the player say the upheaval at the club and their current lack of involvement in the Champions League makes them less attractive from his end. At a time when budgets are tight at United, Davies would be a high-earner even if arriving as a free agent and club sources say it is not a priority deal at present.

Multiple industry sources have told The Athletic that Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing the player and that they would be the most plausible Premier League destination for him. However, a move to Anfield is considered an unlikely outcome at present and senior Liverpool sources have strongly denied any interest in a deal.

Other sides, such as Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea, are monitoring the left-back.

Bayern and Davies’ agents have been in regular contact in recent months, including via a video call last week. Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation have said Bayern are very optimistic and feel there is a good chance Davies will extend, given the player feels at home in the club and city after almost seven years, and is a popular member of the dressing room.

United star gives verdict on underperforming teammate after another mistake-strewn display vs. Plzen

      united-star-gives-verdict-on-underperforming-teammate-after-another-mistake-strewn-display-vs.-plzen

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has launched a passionate defence of teammate Andre Onana after the goalkeeper made another mistake in the 3-2 Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen.

Onana started the game under scrutiny, following a woeful performance in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

Against Forest, Onana made two costly errors that dearly cost his side, the most notable of which was allowing a Morgan Bibbs-White shot to go straight past him.

This time, away to Plzen, Onana completely miscalculated a pass out from the back to Matthis de Ligt. The pass was intercepted by an opposition player, who proceeded to guide it into the path of Matej Vydra. Vydra made no mistake from close range to give the Czech First League outfit the lead.

Luckily for Onana, substitute Rasmus Hojlund produced a superb second-half brace to spare his and United’s blushes.

Amidst concerns over Onana’s wobbly performances in recent games, Fernandes told TNT Sports [via BBC], “We want to play from the back and everyone knows that then we have to make the right decision on the pitch.”

“Andre [Onana] thought that Matta [De Ligt] could get on the ball but he missed it and they scored a goal.”

“It is not about Andre making the mistake, we don’t look at individuals here when something happens on the wrong side. We have huge belief in him.”

“He knows he made a mistake because he is a clever guy, he is going to help us many times and we trust his qualities on the ball.”

Fernandes added, “Mistakes are part of football. If they don’t happen then goals don’t happen. But we did well to show the resilience to come back and find the victory.”

On the result, Fernandes said, “It was a good performance overall. I think in the final third we could have kept the ball a bit more but the man-marking from them was difficult to get away from.”

“Sometimes you just have to pass and run to try to find the gaps in behind.”

“In the first half we did it better than in the second half, when we let the game go a little bit in the way that they wanted, a bit more transitional. Then we dealt with that and in the end we got the win.”

United have two matches left in the Europa League group stage, both scheduled for January. The Red Devils welcome Rangers to Old Trafford before concluding on the road in Bucharest, Romania, to take on FCSB on January 30.

Man United and Amorim indebted to supersub Hojlund after stuttering start in Plzen

        man-united-and-amorim-indebted-to-supersub-hojlund-after-stuttering-start-in-plzen

Funny the things upon which a football match can turn.

This 2-1 Europa League victory at Viktoria Plzen was for a long time a game going familiarly askew for this early and incoherent iteration of Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United. They are still visibly a team, squad and manager learning as they go, adapting to each other and making plenty of mistakes as they do so.

One of those mistakes had given Viktoria Plzen a lead early in the second half after what was largely a non-event of a first half in which United’s brand of stale and sterile domination brought back unpleasant memories of the Louis van Gaal years.

Onana tried to play a pass to Matthijs de Ligt who was in no position to receive it allowing the home side in and giving Matej ‘Wait, That Matej Vydra?’ Vydra to score.

Shortly after that, a frustrated and frustrating Marcus Rashford – already on a booking – leapt inexplicably into a wild challenge in which he was lucky to make contact with his trailing rather than leading leg. Second yellow thus dodged, he was swiftly hooked by Amorim to save him from himself.

It’s one of the most basic plays in the managerial armoury, but it worked. Rasmus Hojlund replaced Rashford and was excellent as United took charge of the final half-hour of the game to such an extent that the winner when it came in the closing minutes was entirely deserved.

Fellow substitute Mason Mount created the equaliser for Hojlund, but it was the winner that really caught the eye. The swiftness of thought and precision of execution from Bruno Fernandes’ pass was matched by Hojlund’s touch and finish to complete a turnaround of greater significance than might be immediately apparent.

For one thing, any win is particularly welcome for United at the moment. We all know it’s going to take time and at least a couple of transfer windows for Amorim to achieve his full vision. Anything that helps keep the mood up on the road to that potential future is crucial.

And more prosaically, this is a win that massively boosts United’s chances of a top-eight finish and avoiding the play-off round unpleasantness. Amorim has happily stated the obvious that he would rather have more time with his players on the training ground than worry about jamming a two-legged tie into an already packed schedule, and United now have that in their hands.

These three points lift them to fifth ahead of the late games with winnable games to come in the new year.

The concerns that remain after this ultimately invigorating win remain familiar, though. The defence remains a confused mess. Onana doesn’t appear to be relishing the task and Amorim is yet to really hit upon the ideal formula for his wing-backs, with neither the full-back-pushed-forward or winger-pushed-back approaches quite working out just yet.

United are also still finding it hard to create chances and then too often butchering the ones they do create. In a frantic closing period here they had frequent overloaded counter-attacks from which they never ever really looked like profiting.

We are starting to get an idea of which players might be able to adapt and profit in this brave new world. The slight worry is that it’s the same few players each time. Hojlund is very obviously one, Amad Diallo very obviously another.

Bruno doesn’t appear to have an obvious spot to which he’s ideally suited in this system, but possesses both the necessary technical quality and footballing intelligence to adapt and find a way to make an impression.

Rashford had, until tonight, been another player who had started well under Amorim. Inadvertently and fortuitously, he still made a big difference to United’s fortunes tonight.

Hojlund spills the beans on genius moment that sealed United’s comeback win vs. Plzen

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has revealed the thought process behind the brilliant free-kick routine between himself and Bruno Fernandes, that sealed victory over Viktoria Plzen.

United came from behind to beat the Czech First League outfit and clinch all three points.

Hojlund came off the bench to deliver a sensational brace, overturning Matej Vydra’s 48th-minute opener for Plzen.

The Denmark international boasts an outstanding record in Europe, scoring nine goals in nine starts.

Rasmus Hojlund’s record in Europe for Manchester United:

          ▪️9 starts
          ▪️9 goals

          — Pubity Sport (@pubitysport) December 12, 2024

Since he joined United, Hojlund has bagged 22 goals across all competitions – more than any other player on the club’s books.

After the final whistle, Hojlund spoke to TNT Sports [via BBC] and opened up on the winning goal.

He said about it, “I have watched Bruno [Fernandes] do that before. I remember the goal with Anthony Martial when he did the chip for him.”

“I just thought I had a good opportunity because I am strong, I could push the defender and spin him and finish.”

He said about the performance and the result, “It was a bit difficult out there. It was very cold today and the pitch was a bit boggy as well, but we solved it in the second half.”

“I think we didn’t play too direct in the first half. We needed to play over them and behind them more because there was space to run into.”

“Especially with the boggy pitch I was talking about, if we won the second balls, you can play from there.”

On the team’s progress under Amorim, Hojlund explained, “We still need more time. It’s still very early days. It’s about getting our routines together and it’s getting there. But it still needs practice and time.”

“I know it sounds odd, but we don’t get enough time on the training ground, so we have to train it during the matches.”

“But it’s getting better and better.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they make their way to the Etihad to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

2 goals, 1 key pass: United star breaks European record in fantastic match-winning cameo

            2-goals,-1-key-pass:-united-star-breaks-european-record-in-fantastic-match-winning-cameo

Manchester United escaped from a freezing Doosan Arena with a crucial three points and their first win on the road in Europe since March 2023.

After a turgid first half, the game sprang into life with three second half goals, including a brace by substitute Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dane was looking for a goal to match Marcus Rashford’s and Wayne Rooney’s record of 10 European goals at 21 years old or under for the club. Thankfully, he broke it with a match-winning brace.

Hojlund had to make do with a place on the bench as Joshua Zirkzee got the nod to start but the Scandinavian wasted little time in making an impact when he was summoned by Amorim in the second half.

He was brought on in the 56th minute of play when he came on for the ineffectual Marcus Rashford and wrote his name up in lights with a goal just six minutes later.

Great work from Amad Diallo down the wing led to a ball across the area which set up Hojlund with a close-range finish.

The 21 year old’s work was not done however, as he grabbed a sensational late winner in the 88th minute to make United’s progress in the Europa League look a lot more assured.

Clever thinking from Bruno Fernandes at a free kick resulted in a lovely ball into Hojlund who flicked the ball past his marker and rifled it into the bottom corner to send the away fans into raptures.

Sofascore gave the player a fantastic rating of 8.3 after his huge contribution.

Along with his two goals, he had one more shot on and off target as he proved a constant threat to the home side.

Hojlund proved how lethal he was as he only received 21 touches of the ball and made five passes but still found a way to make the difference, with one of those passes being a key one.

With five goals in his last four games, Hojlund will feel he has done enough to show Amorim that he should be United’s main man upfront.

After being a substitute today and his fine goalscoring form, it seems a certainty he will get the chance to add more goals to his name against Manchester City on Sunday evening.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has revealed that he told his players to offer more movement in the final third during their 2-1 comeback Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen.

Plzen shed first blood moments after the restart courtesy of Matej Vydra. An Andre Onana pass was intercepted before the ball was squared to Vydra, who made no mistake from close range.

Before the hour-mark, Amorim looked to his bench and brought on Rasmus Hojlund as a replacement for the ineffective Marcus Rashford.

Hojlund made an immediate impact on the match, slotting the ball in after some brilliant play by Amad Diallo.

In the closing moments of the match, Bruno Fernandes and Hojlund executed a brilliant free-kick routine, allowing the Danish striker to lose his marker and fire home, securing all three points for United.

The Red Devils have moved to fifth place in the Europa League standings, level on points with Galatasaray who are fourth.

After the match, Amorim spoke to TNT Sports [via BBC] and gave his verdict on the match.

“We improved during the game. We controlled the game in the first half, but without any great chances. We lacked speed and movement and we didn’t control the ball because the pitch was difficult to make the connections with the strikers.”

              “Viktoria didn’t have chances either.”

“In the second half, we gave a goal away but we reacted well. We pushed the opponents to their own half and we managed to score. The win is important at the moment and it’s good to prepare for the next game.”

On improvement in the second half, Amorim remarked, “The speed improved. I told the players we need more movement in front because they have to feel we are a danger.”

“We changed a little bit of our game and the players from the bench also helped. We improved not just the way we play, but also the speed of the game.”

On Hojlund, Amorim stated, “He is improving. He is more near the goal now. He knows better the movement he has to do. He could score more this evening. but he is scoring, working and controlling the ball better.”

Another player Amorim spoke about was Amad.

He said about the Ivorian forward, “He can be a good player in that position. We need left-footed players in this team to play that role. In the first half, he was coming for the ball too much. He need to play near the opisthion defence more. He will improve in the future for sure.”

Amorim added, “We are improving in some details. We controlled the transitions very well. We were aggressive when we lost the ball. We need to spend more time near the opposition goal.”

United return to action on Sunday when they make their way to the Etihad to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Amorim’s United win in Europe, but the new boss has not fixed this fundamental issue

                amorim’s-united-win-in-europe,-but-the-new-boss-has-not-fixed-this-fundamental-issue

Manchester United managed a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen this evening in the Europa League, but it was a far from impressive performance.

United would have been severely punished against a better team, having made more defensive blunders than could be counted on the fingers of both hands.

The same calamitous decision making that dogged Erik ten Hag’s managerial reign were once again on display tonight under new head coach, Ruben Amorim.

Noussair Mazraou, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Diogo Dalot and Andre Onana were all among the stars whose stray passes in and around the United box fell to Viktoria forwards, with the latter’s being the only one that was punished.

There was also a familiar story up front, when golden chances were squandered, including one by Mason Mount and one by Amad.

A third familiar sight from the Ten Hag era was the lack of composure when taking the lead. Rather than keeping possession and calming the game down, United went into counter-attacking mode, inviting pressure and giving the Czechs chance after chance to get back into it – chances they fortunately did not take.

Déjà vu was also to be found in the inexplicably poor performance of Marcus Rashford, discussed elsewhere.

Andre Onana, too, produced one of his worst performances for some time as he joined in the general regression.

This was the sixth game of the Amorim era and one would hope by now we would be starting to see some progression from the chaos ball of Ten Hag.

However, this – even more than the two defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest – was the performance that most closely resembled those that got the Dutchman sacked in October.

Thanks to some superb performances from the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Amad and substitute Rasmus Hojlund, United ended the evening with a win and took a big step closer to advancing in the competition.

However, Amorim must have been horrified at what he saw and now has to find a way to regroup and get his side firing in time for the Manchester derby.

Even though they themselves are struggling with their own demons at the moment, City will surely not miss the kinds of opportunities Viktoria did tonight if presented with them on Sunday.

Manchester United came back from a goal behind to beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 at Doosan Arena.

As a result of the victory, United have now moved to fifth place in the Europa League standings, level on points with Turkish giants Galatasaray who are a place above them.

Plzen took the lead in the 48th minute through Matej Vydra, who took full advantage of yet another huge mistake from Andre Onana.

In desperate need of a response from his side, Ruben Amorim looked to his bench and brought on Rasmus Hojlund in place of Marcus Rashford.

Hojlund restored parity just seven minutes after he came on, tapping the ball into the back of the net after some brilliant work from Amad Diallo.

The Danish striker was at it again in the dying embers of the match, combining well with Bruno Fernandes from a free-kick routine to put United in the driving seat.

Fernandes played a key role in the victory beyond the assist he managed for Hojlund’s second strike.

During the time he was on the pitch, the United skipper touched the ball 111 times. He also found his teammates with 63 of the 84 passes he attempted, translating to an individual pass accuracy of 75%.

Seven of Fernandes’ passes were key passes.

The Portugal international connected with four of the five crosses he tried and two of the six long balls he pinged.

                  Fernandes created two big chances.

He fired one shot – in the first half – which was on target and required the Plzen goalkeeper to swing into action.

The United playmaker completed two of the four dribbles he embarked on. He delved into nine ground duels and came out on top on four occasions. He was required to contest seven challenges in the air and he won four of them.

Fernandes made one clearance and as many tackles and interceptions.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says his players were “aggressive” and “controlled the transitions very well” in their comeback victory against Viktoria Plzen.

The Red Devils came from behind to beat Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday.

Amorim made some changes before the hour mark, with Rasmus Hojlund making a huge impact off the bench.

The Danish striker scored both of United’s goals to earn them three valuable points, lifting them to fifth in the league phase table, four points behind leaders Athletic Bilbao.

United ended Plzen’s 12-match home unbeaten run in Europe (including qualifiers), becoming the first foreign side to win there since Barcelona did so in November 2022.

It was also the Red Devils’ first away win in Europe since beating Real Betis in March 2023.

“In the second half, we gave a goal away but we reacted well. We pushed the opponents to their own half and we managed to score. The win is important at the moment and it’s good to prepare for the next game.

“The speed improved. I told the players we need more movement in front because they have to feel we are a danger. We changed a little bit of our game and the players from the bench also helped. We improved not just the way we play, but also the speed of the game.

“We are improving in some details. We controlled the transitions very well. We were aggressive when we lost the ball. We need to spend more time near the opposition goal.”

On Hojlund, Amorim added: “He is improving. He is more near the goal now. He knows better the movement he has to do. He could score more this evening. but he is scoring, working and controlling the ball better.”

United captain Bruno Fernandes praised his teammates for coming behind to win in Czechia.

“It was a good performance overall. I think in the final third we could have kept the ball a bit more but the man-marking from them was difficult to get away from. Sometimes you just have to pass and run to try to find the gaps in behind.

“In the first half we did it better than in the second half, when we let the game go a little bit in the way that they wanted, a bit more transitional. Then we dealt with that and in the end we got the win.

“We want to play from the back and everyone knows that then we have to make the right decision on the pitch. Andre [Onana] thought that Matta [De Ligt] could get on the ball but he missed it and they scored a goal.

“It is not about Andre making the mistake, we don’t look at individuals here when something happens on the wrong side. We have huge belief in him. He knows he made a mistake because he is a clever guy, he is going to help us many times and we trust his qualities on the ball.

“Mistakes are part of football. If they don’t happen then goals don’t happen. But we did well to show the resilience to come back and find the victory.”

Match-winner Hojlund added: “It was a bit difficult out there. It was very cold today and the pitch was a bit boggy as well, but we solved it in the second half.

“I think we didn’t play too direct in the first half. We needed to play over them and behind them more because there was space to run into. Especially with the boggy pitch I was talking about, if we won the second balls, you can play from there.”

Hojlund continued: “We still need more time. It’s still very early days. It’s about getting our routines together and its getting there. But it still needs practice and time.

“I know it sounds odd, but we don’t get enough time on the training ground, so we have to train it during the matches. But it’s getting better and better.”

Rashford is broken: Three things we learned as United sneak past Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League

                      rashford-is-broken:-three-things-we-learned-as-united-sneak-past-viktoria-plzen-in-the-europa-league

Manchester United finally overcame Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League this evening.

Head coach Ruben Amorim fielded a strong side that included Andre Onana in goal.

The back three were Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia were the wing backs, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in central midfield.

The front three comprised Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo and Josh Zirkzee.

Here are three things we learned from the game.

                      1. Marcus Rashford is broken

Any hopes that Marcus Rashford’s woeful form over the past year and a half might have been down to Erik ten Hag’s management look to have completely slipped away after another horror show this evening.

Everything about the performance was wrong. His work rate, his positioning, his passing, his movement and his whole on-field persona were all below the standards of a Premier League footballer.

He was lucky not to be sent off, having dived in with his studs up for a sliding tackle having already been booked. He was subbed after 55 minutes, pretty much in disgrace.

With another coach failing to inspire him, we must conclude that there is something mentally broken with the Wythenshawe man that is not showing signs of being resolved. He does not seem to be enjoying his football and Amorim has a difficult battle on his hands to find the key to this huge problem.

                      2. Andre Onana is dodgy again

One of the few bright sparks this season for United has been the fantastic form of the goalkeeper after a patchy 2023/24. However, a bad error against Nottingham Forest at the weekend was compounded today by a howler that gifted Viktoria their goal.

A sloppy pass fell straight to the opposition striker and caused United to concede a goal that they struggled to overcome.

It was not an isolated error either. Onana fumbled two crosses in the first half and also made some poor passes.

To a large extent his mistakes cost United their place in last season’s Champions League knockout stages and history could have repeated itself today had it not been for two great comeback goals from Rasmus Hojlund.

                      3. Hojlund learning to be a goal poacher

United spent a lot of money on Rasmus Hojlund last year and it is fair to say that he is still very much a diamond in the rough. One of the criticisms often levelled at him has been his inability to score poacher’s goals in and around the six yard box. However since Amorim’s arrival, this seems to have been rectified and today was an excellent example, with the Dane scoring two striker’s goals to win the game.
