4 key passes, 3 tackles, 100% dribbles: United talisman crucial to gutsy draw at Liverpool

Captain Bruno Fernandes led the charge as Manchester United fought hard at Anfield to secure a 2-2 draw with bitter rivals Liverpool.

The Portuguese missed United’s woeful home defeat to Newcastle United through suspension, but roared back into Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup as the left-sided 10.

He then dropped back into a deeper role when Kobbie Mainoo was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho as United looked for a way back into the game with the score at 2-1.

Fernandes was impressive at both ends of the pitch, assisting Lisandro Martinez for his crashing opener and fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with the centre-back in defensive duties.

He dominated the ball for United, taking 88 touches – more than any of his team mates – and was typically enterprising with his passing.

The 30-year-old completed 41 of his 58 attempted passes, the highest amount amongst the United players, coming out at 71% pass completion.

The pay-off for his hit-and-miss accuracy, which saw him lose the ball 27 times, was the importance of those passes which found their man.

United’s captain contributed four key passes, twice as many as anyone else on the pitch.

Defensively Fernandes was also a crucial man for his team, making three tackles and two clearances.

He also won both of the aerial duels he contested, and was ferocious on the ground where he came out on top in nine of 11 ground duels, recording a success rate of 82%.

With the ball at his feet, Fernandes was a handful for Liverpool’s defenders and completed all three of his attempted dribbles.

His high-risk high-reward style of football won out again as the captain drove his team to their first Premier League point since the 2-1 win at Manchester City in mid-December.

Roy Keane lays down non-negotiable gauntlet for Bruno Fernandes to end Man United misery

Roy Keane has called on Manchester United to start delivering performances like they put in away to league leaders Liverpool and in their Manchester derby at Manchester City on a more regular basis – with Bruno Fernandes and his senior cohorts urged to set the standard.

United took a surprising but deserved lead at Anfield on Sunday afternoon before finding themselves 2-1 down, only to rally and secured a well-earned point from a much-improved performance.

Ruben Amorim will even have good cause to feel his side should have won the game after Harry Maguire failed to hit the target in the dying seconds, instead curling Joshua Zirkzee’s bobbing square ball over the bar.

Keane was nonetheless pleased to see his former club get a point having written off their chances entirely after seeing the teamsheets, and had to admit he was pleasantly surprised by what he saw from Amorim’s side.

Responding to a similar ‘got to do it every week’ sentiment from Fernandes, Keane said on Sky Sports: “I said before the game, I just looked at the whole team, I looked at the performances recently, the lack of goals…[but] they turned up. They showed a bit of passion.

“The argument to all of this stuff – and I don’t want to take away from United today – is do that in the other games. They done it at City recently…you can’t just pick and choose when you want to turn up for a game at Man United and have passion today and then [not other games].

“It’s a difficult question to ask to a player after a match, ‘how come can’t you do it week in week out’. [Fernandes] is just a player himself, so when you’re a senior player the key is to turn up to every game with that passion and that quality.

“They showed their quality today and I don’t think anyone would have predicted Man United scoring two goals and nearly winning it at the end. Liverpool had their chances, of course they did, but I take my hat off to United: they showed a bit of passion, lots of quality, a bit of fight, and they showed what playing for Man United is all about.

“The key is obviously they’ve got to back it up. They’ve got Arsenal in the cup next, and they’ve got to turn up with the same attitude, the same level of attitude, the same level of performance, the same fighting spirit, and then they’ve got a chance of winning matches.”

“Why can’t we….”: United star admits being “pretty upset” with this annoying thing after draw with Liverpool

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted to being very frustrated by his side’s inconsistent performances, following their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

United were impressive from start to finish to ensure they got a share of the spoils at Anfield.

Lisandro Martinez broke the deadlock moments after the break with an excellent finish into the roof of the net. United’s lead didn’t last too long as Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored within 10 minutes of each other to give the hosts the lead.

It seemed like United were headed for a fifth consecutive loss across all competitions but Amad Diallo had other ideas. The Ivorian made a well-timed run into the box to convert a cross from Alejandro Garnacho.

One of the other United players who was brilliant was Bruno Fernandes.

In addition to his assist for Martinez’s goal, the United skipper was sensational in the midfield, especially in the final 30 minutes when the game was delicately balanced.

After the final whistle, Fernandes spoke to Sky Sports and gave his verdict on the match. He also had his say on United’s woes this season, especially their inconsistency.

He said, “We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points. Even today we can’t be happy with a point.”

“We need the points and we could’ve won the game at the end, but it’s a fair result. Both teams played good football.”

“I’m pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can’t we do this everywhere? It frustrates me. Also, finally, I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season.”

“Being 2-1 [down] then scoring it’s good to get a point but we need more. Now we have an FA Cup tie at Arsenal and it is going to be very tough but we want to get to the final again.”

The Portugal international added, “We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game.”

“You have to put in effort and that’s why we took something from today.”

“It can’t stop here, We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level.”

Fernandes emphasised that if he and his teammates can do it at Anfield, then they can beat any other team anywhere.

Protege’s return triggered United’s fighback as Amorim once again shows big-game temperament

Manchester United produced their best display under Ruben Amorim at Anfield on Sunday as they battled to secure a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

It was the Red Devils who took the lead with Lisandro Martinez blasting past Allison before the hosts struck back with two goals of their own before a thrilling finale was set up by Amad who equalised.

Harry Maguire could have won the game late on but it seemed a fair result in the end and showed that the head coach’s methods do work.

United had 47 percent of the ball under the lights on Sunday, while in last season’s 0-0 draw at the same venue, they only saw 30 percent of the ball.

          Amorim ball works again

The Old Trafford side had enjoyed 48 percent of possession against Manchester City in the away derby, while against Arsenal at the Emirates, they enjoyed 49 percent of the ball. All statistics which point to a marked improvement with the ball.

In all the big games this season, United have looked much more comfortable keeping the ball and being patient and it is clearly an aspect that the Portuguese tactician wants to see from his side instead of resorting to only counter-attacks.

Intensity has been another clear demand since coming in, and Manuel Ugarte fits the bill perfectly. The sheer amount of ground coverage he managed showed what an engine he has on him and how he was possibly underutilised by the former manager.

United pressed relentlessly through the Uruguayan and it was clear to see how sorely he was missed against Newcastle. The Uruguayan understands the coach’s system having worked with him before at Sporting Lisbon and he works extremely hard off the ball.

But that is not all as the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star is now taking risks with his passing and has the coach’s trust and it showed. What Amorim needs to figure out is who will be his eventual partner in the middle of the park.

The Portuguese will also be pleased with Diogo Dalot’s contribution on the left. He finally took his full-back on and had the beating of Trent Alexander Arnold time and again even though his end product was not always top-notch.

          Ugarte, Dalot impressive

A left wingback is the need of the hour as Amorim wants his wingbacks to be well-versed moving forwards, but Dalot showed he has the qualities to flourish till a replacement is found.

Despite the point, the form of Rasmus Hojlund remains a concern and the lack of goals from his strikers is something which will worry Amorim.

Whether INEOS can help with resources remains to be seen. From Amorim’s perspective, he has managed to get a performance from his players in the big games.

The real challenge will be to motivate them for the next league test against Southampton in two weeks’ time as that will be crucial to pick up an elusive win which will help them climb up the table.

4 clearances, 3 tackles, 1 key pass: defender showed aggression needed to push United to 2-2 draw at Liverpool

Manchester United beat the odds to grab a valuable 2-2 draw away at Liverpool in a game where they were heavily viewed as underdogs.

Ruben Amorim’s men showed plenty of attacking intent, taking shots against their opponents while refusing to lose hope after going 2-1 down following their 1-0 lead.

Given that Liverpool continued attacking throughout the match, it took all of United’s players to put in a powerful effort to come out with the draw against the Premier League leaders.

Centre-back Lisandro Martinez was one shining example of a player who showed up in attack and defence.

Martinez made a crucial block in the first half, keeping the score level after Luis Diaz sought out an early goal. In total, he made three tackles, three interceptions, four clearances, and one block, proving irreplaceable at the back for United.

He was the second-most active United player of the match defensively, making 11 defensive actions throughout the encounter.

With only one of four long balls reaching their target and 22 of 29 passes proving accurate (76%), Martinez was not at his best in the passing department.

Still, he provided one key pass and proved to be an unlikely source of attacking prowess.

Despite taking just one shot on goal throughout the match, one opportunity was all the Argentine needed to make all the difference.

In the 52nd minute, Martinez raced into the box to collect a pass from Bruno Fernandes, firing the ball into the top corner of the net on the far end to hand United an unlikely lead.

Of course, his physicality was also at play, winning three of five ground duels against a stubborn Liverpool lineup.

Ultimately, it was an impressive performance for Martinez who did well to show his worth and restore faith in a concerned United fanbase, especially given his and his team’s recent dip in form.

Hopefully, Martinez can build on this performance to cement his place in Amorim’s starting lineup.

Five things we learnt as United fight tooth and nail for morale boosting 2-2 draw with Liverpool

Manchester United travelled to Anfield to take on Liverpool in their first game of 2025.

The Red Devils started with Andre Onana in nets with a back three of Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot started in the wing back positions while Manuel Ugarte returned to the midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Bruno Fernandes took back his starting role after his recent suspension with Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund starting up front alongside him.

Here are five things we learnt from the match.

United continue to keep ball well away from home under Ruben Amorim

Under Amorim’s rein United have struggled at numerous things but one aspect they have improved on is keeping possession, especially away from home.

In a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in North London, they kept 49% of the ball. While away to Manchester City, they had 48% of the ball.

In the first half against Liverpool, they maintained control of the ball 44% of the time and dominated the attacking play at times. This theme continued in the second half as United improved their possession to 47% for the game as they refused to retreat back into their shells like years gone by.

Results are ultimately what counts at the end of the day but this is proof that Amorim is getting his message across to the players at least in this way.

In theory, with more time on the training pitch and some key upgrades in vital positions on the pitch, United will hopefully have a sustainable plan moving forward on how to play away from home against the finest in England and Europe.

              Rasmus Hojlund isn’t ready yet

Hojlund clearly gives his all for the club he loves and has shown moments of magic as a United player.

Nonetheless, he is not ready to lead the line at Premier League level on a consistent basis. This makes sense as he is only 21 years old and had little first team experience before his big money move to Old Trafford in 2023.

He missed a huge chance in the first half when one-on-one with Allison Becker and frequently could not make the ball stick to alleviate pressure from his side.

There have been rumours that United are looking to do a deal for Victor Osimhen in the January window and have their eyes on Viktor Gyokeres in the summer.

United fans will lick their lips at the difference a player of that calibre could make to this United squad and system, especially in huge moments like today’s match.

Kobbie Mainoo-Manuel Ugarte is the best midfield duo United have

Mainoo and Ugarte as a partnership is far from perfect and lacks a certain creativity and guile in the passing department.

Over time, there is hardly a question that Amorim will try and upgrade it with his own players but there can be no doubt that it is currently United’s best bet for a midfield two.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were made to look like “mannequins” against Newcastle United, while Ugarte and Mainoo brought much more energy to Anfield.

It is unlikely that United can sign in the midfield in January with left wingback and a number nine a bigger priority, so it looks like Amorim will have the most success with these two young men in the midfield pivot until the summer at least.

United fail to hold onto a lead again

The Red Devils found themselves in front early in the second half after a great finish from Lisandro Martinez.

After working so hard to keep Liverpool to one shot on target until almost the hour mark, United conceded just seven minutes after taking the lead as Cody Gakpo slid through and fired in an equaliser.

To be fair, this is a problem that has existed at United for a very long time and will take significant work to be eradicated but it continues to happen over and over again where the side struggle to put their foot on the ball and maintain a lead.

United showed their fragility once more when they conceded a penalty shortly after to gift Liverpool a 2-1 lead in the match after all the hard work they had put in to get their noses in front in the first place.

Amad rises to the big occasion again

Amad may only be a youngster, but he has more big goals against United’s biggest rivals than most have in a career.

He scored the winning goal last year in additional time of extra time in the FA Cup against Liverpool and scored the winner at the Etihad last month.

The Ivorian slotted home a fine equaliser to add an Anfield goal to his ever-growing collection of big moments in a United shirt.

Stroke of genius: one key Amorim tactical change hands United crucial 2-2 away draw with Liverpool ?

Manchester United showed determination and composure to secure a valuable 2-2 draw away from home against Liverpool on Sunday evening.

Despite his side falling 2-1 behind, Man United manager Ruben Amorim showed some tact by bringing on substitute Alejandro Garnacho, who assisted Amad Diallo to secure a late equaliser against the odds.

Barely a minute in, disaster struck for United as Kobbie Mainoo fell to the ground upon jockeying with Ryan Gravenberch. Mainoo’s head was then struck by the Liverpool midfielder’s boot. Fortunately, he was able to rise to his feet and continue the match.

While United had a bright start to the match with some high pressing and smooth passing, Liverpool almost penetrated when a Mohamed Salah cross was blocked by Harry Maguire. Trent Alexander-Arnold fired in the corner, which United did well to dispose of.

12 minutes in, Manuel Ugarte made a rough tackle on Cody Gakpo, taking his leg out. He was fortunate to not receive a booking from referee Michael Oliver.

Alexander-Arnold attempted a long-range effort after the restart, which Lisandro Martinez did well to block. Luis Diaz fired the rebound over the top, bringing an end to the hosts’ most threatening attack so far.

In the 14th minute, Liverpool were almost through again when Diaz threaded a through ball to Gakpo, whose shot drifted wide of the far post. United’s defence needed to improve their focus to keep out the hosts’ attack.

Moments later, Alexis Mac Allister got on the end of a lethal cross from Salah. His volley was bravely parried out by Onana for a corner. The Cameroonian shot-stopper produced a fine catch to quash the danger of the cross that followed.

Before the 20th minute, United got their first close goalscoring opportunity. On a quick counter, Diogo Dalot fired a cross to Amad Diallo in the centre, who, unfortunately, was too advanced to connect well with the ball. His header went back, with Mainoo’s follow-up shot being deflected out for a corner.

Dalot received a totally unnecessary yellow card for holding onto Salah even though he was out of possession. Rash behaviour by the full-back.

Near the half-hour mark, Gravenberch attempted a speculative effort that veered just wide of the left post, allowing an unwitting United to breathe a sigh of relief.

As half-time approached, United were knocking on the door of Liverpool’s defence. A threatening through ball by Fernandes was put out for a corner.

Hojlund got on the end of a threatening long ball, firing his shot into the keeper. It was the closest scoring opportunity United had of the game so far.

It was an encouraging first-half performance from United, with the game remaining goalless following a cagey first half at Anfield.

With two minutes of added time, both sides had a little more time to find a lead before the break. Liverpool came close to scoring as the corner kick came in, only for Onana to clear inches from the line.

United did well to catch Liverpool on a counter, with Dalot attempting a shot only for Virgil van Dijk to send the ball out for a corner. Unfortunately, the hosts’ defence held strong, disposing of the corner with ease.

Noussair did well to block a cross from Andrew Robertson, handing the hosts a corner after the restart.

Six minutes after the break, United grabbed the lead. Fernandes did brilliantly to cut into the centre, dribbling past the defence to then thread a through ball to Lisandro Martinez, who raced into the box. The unlikely scorer did superbly to fire the ball past the keeper and hand United a precious lead against the Premier League leaders.

Soon after the kick-off, Amad was shown a yellow card related to an incident related to United’s wild celebrations. It was later confirmed that he kicked the ball into the crowd during the celebrations.

Mainoo took a promising shot, which Alisson parried out for a corner.

In the 59th minute, Liverpool equalised. It took just six minutes for Gakpo to fire a blistering shot into the far corner, leaving Onana with no chance of denying him. Gakpo sent De Ligt to the ground as he quickly switched directions before taking his shot.

Hojlund came close to getting on the end of a Dalot cross, only for Van Dijk to get there first and clear for a corner. While the cross was ineffective, United launched another counter, earning yet another corner kick. Fernandes passed short to Amad, whose cross was easily blocked by the stubborn defence.

With little over 23 minutes to play, the referee was directed to the pitchside monitor to evaluate a VAR decision. De Ligt’s arm struck the ball in the box seconds before, stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity. He took quick to award Liverpool a penalty.

Salah stepped up to take the spot kick. While Onana did superbly to get a glove on the ball, it went in, handing the hosts a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left to play.

Moments after the kick-off, Liverpool forced a corner as Martinez deflected the ball out of danger. The game was momentarily paused as Mainoo came off for Alejandro Garnacho. Clearly, United manager Ruben Amorim wanted to up the attacking pressure to find an equaliser.

In the 73rd minute, Maguire was brandished a yellow card for a foul on Salah near the edge of the box.

11 minutes before the final whistle, Amad got United back in the game. Garnacho pulled back a pass to Amad in the box, who found the back of the net with his first shot. 2-2 in front of a frustrated Anfield crowd.

Garnacho raced back into the box after the restart, yet that time, Van Dijk was able to block the pass, sending it out for a United corner.

In the 83rd minute, De Ligt was susbtituted off for Leny Yoro. Just three minutes later, Joshua Zirkzee came on for Hojlund.

Just two minutes before time, United earned a corner. Fernandes passed a short ball to Amad, who laid the ball back to Fernandes, whose shot was parried out for another corner.

Liverpool dealt with the successive cross, launching a rapid counter which saw Onana expertly stop a close-range shot by Diogo Jota. Robertson’s corner cross found Mac Allister, however, Onana did well to catch the header.

With seven minutes of stoppage time, United were determined to find a winner, pressing the hosts in the final third.

In the same breath, Liverpool were attempting counter after counter. It was end-to-end action as the match headed towards its exciting conclusion.

In the 94th minute, the home side earned a corner.

Amad did excellently to clear the cross from Robertson, extinguishing the danger.

With less than two minutes of added time remaining, Robertson fouled Amad, handing United a threatening free kick.

30 seconds remaining, and United missed a grand opportunity to score a last-gasp winner. Zirkzee passed the ball to Maguire in the centre of the box, who ballooned his effort over the top.

Level the game remained after a thrilling match filled with non-stop action. United showed grit, determination, and character to come away with a valuable point despite being underdogs. Perhaps Amorim’s project is gaining momentum despite a slow start to life at United.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez, Fernandes, Hojlund, Amad, Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo
                Subs: Garnacho, Yoro, Zirkzee

Man Utd combined XI with Hodgson’s Liverpool includes only four of Ruben Amorim’s players

Liverpool host Man Utd in the Premier League on Sunday. We’ve decided against the pointless exercise of doing a combined XI due to the one-sided nature of the clash.

This Man Utd team has been really, really bad this season and should get hammered at Anfield. But how bad are they? Worse than Roy Hodgson’s team in 2010/11? Surely not.

Well, we reckon only four of Ruben Amorim’s players are good enough to get in that team. Here is a combined XI of Hodgson’s 2010/11 Liverpool team and Amorim’s 2024/25 Red Devils.

                  GK: Pepe Reina (Liverpool)
Andre Onana and Pepe Reina are probably as error-prone as each other but we are giving the edge to the Spaniard; we think he was more reliable and the ball-playing aspect is not relevant because the style of play Premier League clubs adopted 15 years ago is very different to now.

                  RB: Noussair Mazraoui (Man Utd)
Another pretty close call here. Going with Noussair Mazraoui over Glen Johnson was difficult and perhaps more to do with Man Utd pity than anything else.

Mazraoui has been Man Utd’s best signing of a miserable season and is someone Amorim will rely on heavily due to his versatility. The Moroccan has shown he is capable of playing as a wing-back or at centre-back.

                  CB: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool)
He was often made to look a fool but a 2010 Jamie Carragher would obviously get in Manchester United’s current team.

                  CB: Martin Skrtel (Liverpool)
Martin Skrtel also gets in this combined XI back four, ahead of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, who cost a grand total of £237million.

                  LB: Diogo Dalot (Man Utd)
As a wing-back, Diogo Dalot’s form has dipped, which comes as a surprise. Regardless of that, he is a shoo-in considering Liverpool’s left-back under Hodgson was Paul Konchesky. Decent player, but not as good as Dalot or a half-fit Luke Shaw.

                  DM: Lucas Leiva (Liverpool)
Lucas Leiva retired in 2023 after returning to boyhood club Gremio for nine months. He is best known for his time at Liverpool, spending a decade at Anfield before a transfer to Italian giants Lazio in 2017.

Casemiro would have walked into any combined XI during his Real Madrid days and his first season at Old Trafford but it would be fair to say he is over the hill. Meanwhile, summer signing Manuel Ugarte has not shown enough to deserve a place over Lucas, who is a cult hero at Liverpool.

The Brazilian was named the club’s Player of the Year for the 2010/11 campaign and was rewarded with a new contract.

                  CM: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
This obviously was not Steven Gerrard’s best season… but it’s Steven Gerrard.

                  CM: Kobbie Mainoo (Man Utd)
The other central midfield spot is certainly up for debate. Kobbie Mainoo gets the nod, probably because he is likeable, to be honest. The Liverpool options include Christian Poulsen, Raul Meireles, Jonjo Shelvey or Joe Cole, while including wide players would mean choosing between Maxi Rodriguez, Ryan Babel and Milan Jovanovic.

Man Utd’s wide options are certainly better but we are still not convinced. Amad Diallo has shown something at least under Amorim but Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford have been pants. Mason Mount was an option but not for long.

Listing every other possibility is our justification for picking Mainoo, it would seem.

                  AM: Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)
Bruno Fernandes should continue to struggle to find a place in Amorim’s system but we have the perfect role for him in our combined XI. He doesn’t get the captain’s armband though; not a chance.

Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 does not have any 10s, with the two behind the one more like wingers, which is not ideal for the Man Utd captain. He is not a winger and is not an out-and-out central midfielder, especially in a flat four where he is required to run up and down the pitch with equal defensive, attacking and playmaking duties. He has energy but Bruno is a final-third player in sustained possession but someone who can find a Hollywood pass in transition.

                  ST: Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool)
We all remember Dirk Kuyt’s hat-trick against Man Utd in the 2010/11 campaign, don’t we? His treble was the first in the league by a Liverpool played against the Red Devils for over two decades – and was scored from a combined distance of 8.54 yards, making it the shortest hat-trick in Premier League history.

The Dutchman finished the season as the Red’s top scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals, which is more than Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund will finish with.

                  ST: Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
The 2010/11 season was the start of Fernando Torres’ decline but like with Gerrard, it’s Liverpool Fernando Torres, lads. He cost Chelsea £50million after scoring nine goals in the first half of the campaign. He only scored once for the Blues in the second half.

We could hardly omit him for what Man Utd currently have, could we?

Amad and Martinez grabbed the goals but this star carried United on his back in valiant draw vs. Liverpool

Manchester United played out a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 6 – Good save in the first half to deny Alex Mac Allister. Not much he could do about Cody Gakpo’s equaliser or Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick. Distribution was a lot better than it has been in the past few weeks.

Matthijs de Ligt 4 – Didn’t cover himself in glory for Gakpo’s strike and also conceded the penalty from which Liverpool took the lead. An unlucky second half really after a solid opening 45 minutes.

Harry Maguire 6.5 – Some good passes in the middle of the back-three. Aggressive in the duels and some excellent bits of no-nonsense defending. Also came out of the backline to press well. Harsh yellow card after what seemed like a well-timed tackle on Salah. Could have won it for United right at the death but he sent his effort well over the bar.

Lisandro Martinez 9 – A number of good blocks inside the box. Helped Dalot reduce Salah’s threat. Stupendous finish to give United the lead.

Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Performed well in the right-wing-back role. Good in possession and helped United sustain spells of pressure against their bitter rivals. Could have got forward a little bit more.

Manuel Ugarte 8 – Another aggressive and tenacious display, especially in the first half. Wasn’t shy at all to get stuck in and also produced one or two incredible turns while under immense pressure. An unsung hero for United on extremely hostile grounds.

Kobbie Mainoo 6 – Started a bit shaky but grew into the match as it progressed. Good on the ball and contributed defensively.

Diogo Dalot 7 – One of his better performances for United since Ruben Amorim’s arrival. A superb cross to Amad that should have saw United take the lead. A few other positive balls inside the box across both halves. Constantly took on Trent Alexander-Arnold and got some joy when he did. Defensively sound, which is more impressive considering he received an early booking for a foul on Salah.

Amad Diallo 9 – Should have perhaps done better with his header from Dalot’s cross. Very involved and took his goal well to make it 2-2 for United. The Red Devils’ best attacker.

Bruno Fernandes 6.5 – Nice ball into Martinez to break the deadlock. Worked hard. Nice to have him back after missing the last game through suspension. Tested Alisson late on with a clever shot.

Rasmus Hojlund 2 – Another shambolic performance from the n.o 9. On multiple occasions, failed to hold up the ball and make it stick. Didn’t bring his teammates into play and missed a golden chance in the first half.

                    Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho 7 – Fantastic work to beat his man and find Amad with the cross. A bright spark when he was thrust into the action.

Joshua Zirkzee 5 – A few good touches and passes that helped to keep things ticking for United.

Leny Yoro 7 – Incredible last-ditch tackle in added time to keep Liverpool from getting in.

Man Utd swap deal? Rashford transfer ‘talks’ develop into ‘enquiries’ for Liverpool target

Napoli’s talks over a potential move for Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford have led to the Red Devils enquiring about Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to reports.

The Red Devils boss decided to leave Rashford out of their 2-1 win over arch-rivals Man City in the Manchester Derby in mid-December, while Alejandro Garnacho also missed that game.

But Rashford was then left out the two following games as well with Ruben Amorim pointing to “selection” as the reason for leaving the Man Utd forward out of his squad for their matches against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League.

After being left out of their clash with Man City, Rashford told journalist Henry Winter that he is ready for a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford.

Man Utd head coach Amorim insisted just before Christmas that he will “forget the interview now” and move on by judging Rashford solely on his performances on the pitch.

Amorim told Sky Sports: “It is a hard situation. I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player.

“I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that.

“As a coach I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.

“At the moment I focus on improving Marcus and we need a talented guy like Marcus. I forget the interview now and see what I see on the pitch.”

There have been a number of clubs reportedly interested in Rashford with the January transfer window now open and Man Utd keen to raise money for potential incomings.

Our friends at TEAMtalk have an exclusive with Italian journalist Rudy Galetti claiming that Man Utd brought up Kvaratskhelia in talks over a deal to offload Rashford to Napoli.

The journalist claims: ‘Recent discussions between Manchester United and Napoli initially focused on Marcus Rashford and included enquiries about the Georgian winger, who is on United’s shortlist as his potential replacement.’

It is claimed that the Napoli winger is ‘open’ to a transfer in the summer if he can’t agree a new deal at the Serie A side and although Man Utd are ‘still tracking the player, it is not certain that they will be interested after June – given that they need a reinforcement right now, in January’.
