Man Utd news: Van Nistelrooy learns if he can snatch 268-game Red Devil as Romano drops truth on Leicester raid

Man Utd news: Van Nistelrooy learns if he can snatch 268-game Red Devil as Romano drops truth on Leicester raid

Fabrizio Romano has detailed whether Leicester will be able to land Victor Lindelof in what he describes as a “busy” January for the Midlands outfit.

When Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of Leicester in November, it was reported he had eyes on some United players, following his spell as interim boss there. Toby Collyer, Dan Gore and Harry Amass were all mentioned as potential additions.

The young trio have found minutes hard to come by at United, but at a side with less quality, could be given their fair share of game time.

In any case, of late, Lindelof has been mooted as a potential Leicester signing, of course having played a lot of football for United, but only nine games coming so far this season.

Transfer insider Romano has discussed the potential of the Foxes landing the centre-back.

“For Leicester, despite the links we had with Victor Lindelof, I’m not sure the player is keen on leaving Man United to go to Leicester in January. But just in general, I think Leicester will be busy in the January,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

Lindelof would be free to leave United in the summer if he were not to move on in January, so could just wait out his last six months and have his pick of clubs, while holding out for chances to improve United’s form if called upon.

That could potentially give Leicester a chance at him in the summer. But if Lindelof does not want to move there now, it seems unlikely his view would change.

That said, Romano was not definitive, only stating he’s not sure if the January move has legs, rather than shutting it down entirely.

In any case, there will be positive signs for Leicester in their quest to avoid the Premier League drop – they are currently 19th – given the insider stated it will be a busy period for the club.

Given they are the joint second-worst defensive side in the league at the moment and only four sides have scored fewer goals than them, it seems it’ll have to be in multiple areas if they want to survive.

United offer permanent position to man who brought Haaland to Europe’s attention – report

Manchester United are in talks to offer Christopher Vivell a permanent position at the club.

INEOS have received a lot of criticism lately but one thing they have done well is update United’s football structure by hiring Omar Berrada as CEO from Manchester City and Jason Wilcox as technical director.

There was much shock when Dan Ashworth was sacked after only a few months in his role as sporting director and there has been much speculation over who will fill the role next.

United seem to be taking a different direction however as The Daily Mail report that they are in talks to make Vivell’s temporary role permanent.

He joined as recruitment director in the summer and it has been reported that he has highly impressed Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS in his role.

It was suggested that he may be in line for an extension to his deal and this now seems to be the case.

The Mail report that they understand that Vivell is “now in talks over taking up a permanent position at United. There is some optimism that an agreement can be reached with Vivell in the coming weeks.”

The former Chelsea employee has a strong reputation in the game and has been credited with the discovery of an impressive list of players such as Erling Haaland, Benjamin Sesko, Dayot Upamecano and Karim Adeyemi.

It has also been reported that United have taken the decision not to hire anybody new to specifically replace Ashworth and “instead, Wilcox – while maintaining the title of technical director – will assume an enhanced remit and will work closely alongside Berrada at the coalface of United’s daily operations.”

“Sir Dave Brailsford will represent the ownership to make up a three-man football leadership team.”

Chief operating officer Collette Roche will be handed extra responsibilities at the Carrington training centre to free up Wilcox to focus more on performance issues rather than logistics.

Moreover, it had been thought that Michael Appleton would be offered a role as loans manager but this is not the case and he is now looking at other managerial opportunities.

United set to use Rashford in sensational swap deal for one of Europe’s most electric wingers – report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in using Marcus Rashford as a makeweight in an exchange deal for Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but will face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain for the 23-year-old winger.

L’Équipe (relayed by Get Football News France) reveals contract negotiations between Kvaratskhelia and Napoli have “stalled” which has sparked PSG into life as the French club “showed intense interest” in signing the Georgian international last summer.

Fabrizio Romano contends Napoli are “trying to pin their player down to a contract trying to pin their player down to a contract that will keep him in the south of Italy for longer than his current 2027 end date”, but these efforts appear to have been unsuccessful.

It ensures Kvaratskhelia’s deal would enter its final two years this summer, meaning this year is the best opportunity for the Italian club to cash in on their prized asset. And its this situation which has seemingly reignited the Ligue 1 champions’ pursuit of the 23-year-old Georgian.

However, L’Équipe contends United are planning to “enter [the] race” for the Serie A star and will seek to use their own left-winger to force through a sensational swap deal.

The report reveals the Red Devils are “proposing the idea of exchanging Marcus Rashford for [Kvaratskhelia]” with a number of Italian clubs having expressed an interest in the United winger following his blockbuster interview around leaving Old Trafford last month.

AC Milan have been the leading candidate trying to sign Rashford. The Rossoneri are only interested in a loan move in January, however, with United covering the majority of the 27-year-old’s costly wage packet.

This is unlikely to be appealing to Old Trafford officials with INEOS seeking to cut costs wherever possible. The club’s finances are stretched to the limit and any transfers in January will require outgoing sales before any inbound deals are agreed.

As such, using Rashford as a makeweight would, therefore, make sense to help reduce the potential cost of Kvaratskhelia, though it’s extremely unlikely Napoli would accept a straight swap. Any deal would almost certainly involve cash plus Rashford, rather than the English winger himself.

A report from Italy suggests Napoli have “opened up” to the prospect of losing Kvaratskhelia in January with the Serie A leaders appearing increasingly ready to establish a bidding war for their winger between PSG and United.

French transfer expert Santi Auona contends the Ligue 1 club have submitted a proposal for Kvaratskhelia involving a “large sum…plus Milan Skriniar to Napoi”, with the Georgian open to a move to Paris.

Translated Tweet: “Khvicha Kvaratskhelia wants to join PSG. Paris offers a large sum (the amount of which has not been disclosed) + Milan Skriniar to Napoli

Partenopei have made a contract offer to the Slovak international. A salary lower than what he receives at PSG. Before accepting the offer, Skriniar would like the difference in salary to be compensated by PSG.”

Skriniar, a central defender who previously shone in Serie A for Sampadoria and Inter Milan, would require PSG to pay the difference in wages from the contract offer Napoli officials have proposed. He also turns 30 next month and has struggled to replicate his form in Italy while in France.

There would be similar issues with United including Rashford in negotiations with Napoli given the academy graduate’s exorbitant wages, but he is a like-for-like replacement for Kvaratskhelia on the left-wing and, having only turned 27 a few months ago, is entering his prime as a footballer.

Furthermore, Rashford’s potent pairing of speed and strength has seen him enjoy success previously in a league far more physically demanding than Serie A. Against Italian defences, the Englishman would be likely to regain his previously electric form in front of goal, as his former teammate Scott McTominay has found since swapping Manchester for Naples.

However, it increasingly looks like United will have to act fast to utilise this part exchange advantage over PSG as the French club zeroes in on their long-term target for the left-wing to finally replace Kylian Mbappe.

Kvaratskhelia would be the one of the absolute best candidates across Europe’s big five leagues to slot into new head coach Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system in the LAM role, which the Portuguese has struggled to find a suitable player for.

The 23-year-old winger’s elite dribbling and skill in tight spaces lends itself perfectly to Amorim’s demands from his front line in possession, while he retains good speed and a devastating to cut inside to be able to trouble opposition fullbacks in transitions.

INEOS have been in penny pinching mode over the winter period but now is the time to gift their new manager with the perfect late Christmas present, before its too late.

Amorim has special plans for prodigious academy star dubbed “the next Yaya Toure” – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has shied away from throwing youngsters into the deep end owing to the precarious position the club finds itself in.

The Red Devils are languishing in 13th spot and the confidence of academy graduates could get knocked in case of a brutal defeat and hence, no academy debuts have followed in the aftermath of the Portuguese’s arrival.

But that does not mean the coach is not keeping a close watch on the academy with plenty of academy stars getting called up to training while Amorim himself has gone to watch certain academy games.

One area which is in need of a major revamp is the midfield with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen not really fitting with the 39-year-old’s intense demands and both are likely to leave either in January or latest, by next summer.

          Kone has impressed coaches

Surprisingly, Kobbie Mainoo is now being linked with a shock exit owing to United’s PSR situation and that could leave Manuel Ugarte as the only starter left at the club.

Sekou Kone, a surprise acquisition from Guidars FC, has been touted by coaches as having the potential to thrive under Amorim and as per Givemesport, the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss is eager to see what the Malian can produce.

However, he will not fast-track him into the first team, and instead will see the youngster in action along with quite a few promising stars in pre-season.

“Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is already taking an approach to promoting the club’s young talent, with a number of top-class youngsters having featured for the club in his reign as boss – and that could see prodigy Sekou Kone next on the conveyor belt.

“He’s yet to feature for United’s first-team, but whilst he’s shown a lot of promise, manager Amorim is keen to ease him into the action by avoiding a ‘fast-track’ for the physical midfielder.

Amorim will see him in pre-season

“The Malian midfielder is being ‘groomed’ as a future first-team player, and with the 18-year-old having made the move to the Premier League in the summer, he will get his chance to impress among the club’s stars in pre-season.”

The 20-time English league champions were forced to hijack Ajax’s deal to land the 18-year-old, dubbed the ‘next Yaya Toure‘ in the summer. Kone is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play further forward.

He had caught everyone’s attention with his performances in the U17 World Cup where Mali finished third. He has already trained with the first team back when Erik ten Hag was in charge and was also named in United’s Premier League squad.

The Mali U17 international is currently injured and this break is helping him acclimatise to his new surroundings with both club and player happy with his development so far.

Man Utd: Mainoo told to avoid ‘bad advice’ from agent amid Chelsea links as Rashford ‘end’ revealed

Kobbie Mainoo has been told to ignore the “bad advice” of his agent and snub potential big-money offers from Chelsea or elsewhere and stay at Manchester United.

Mainoo was previously heralded as one of United’s ‘untouchable’ stars along with Alejandro Garnacho, but the club’s dire finances now mean every player has a price.

Chelsea have leapt to the front of the queue to sign Mainoo, who is said to be ‘unhappy’ with the initial terms offered by INEOS in negotiations over a new contract.

Mainoo currently earns just £20,000 per week, a drop in the ocean compared to Casemiro’s £350,000 per week wedge, and wants a salary that reflects his importance to the team.

United are keen to keep their academy graduate but are also open to offers – from Chelsea or other suitors – as his pure profit sale would be a huge help as they look to stay within the bounds of PSR guidelines.

Mainoo reportedly wants a new contract worth around £200,000-a-week to stay at Old Trafford but former Red Devils defender Paul Parker has warned the teenager not to focus on the money.

Paul Parker doesn’t see Kobbie Mainoo going to Chelsea despite recent reports.

Parker said: “I think the only way that it would go that way is if Kobbie is being advised badly or being silly and asking for too much money. Maybe an agent who is using what he has done in such a short space of time, saying to grab it now.

“Football is short and I get that, but he’s still very young and at the biggest club in the world, so why look to grab it now when over the long-term he has to look at so many other players that are still doing well now, who have stopped playing a few years ago.”

Marcus Rashford’s future is even less certain after the forward admitted last month he was looking for a “new challenge”.

A report on Thursday claimed West Ham may offer him the chance to remain in the Premier League, but he majority of interest has come from abroad.

Rashford has turned down approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, but Glen Johnson believes any move abroad – amid reports several Serie A sides are interested – would tarnish his reputation.

Johnson told BetVictor: “I hope Rashford doesn’t move abroad because, as far as his reputation is concerned, that would be the end of him. I know it can be hard to turn down those moves because of the amount of money, but he’s still too young.

“For someone of his ability, he hasn’t really done much in the game yet, and if he goes to Saudi Arabia he won’t come back.

“It all depends on the reasons why he isn’t performing, if he’s not happy at United or hasn’t got the desire for it anymore. If he still wants to win things, then I think he has the ability to sign for a decent team. Unfortunately he does it every other game, rather than week-in, week-out.”

Fabrizio Romano gives huge Marcus Rashford transfer update after hearing from “sources close” to the player

Members of the entourage of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford have “played down” suggestions that he could be on his way to Como, reports Fabrizio Romano.

United are looking to offload Rashford, who admitted in a bombshell interview last month that he is ready for a new challenge, away from Old Trafford.

The Red Devils ideally want to complete a permanent sale of their Carrington academy graduate but a January loan deal appears to be the most likely outcome.

A number of clubs in Europe are believed to be keen on temporarily signing Rashford until the end of the season. His brother and agent was recently in Milan to hold exploratory talks with AC Milan chiefs over a potential transfer.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio recently revealed that monied Serie A side Como – managed by former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas – had “entered the race” for Rashford.

Di Marzio claimed that Como were hoping to use the presence of Raphael Varane – Rashford’s former United teammate – to convince him about a switch to Stadio Comunale G. Sinigaglia.

Their bid to land him is also bolstered by the presence of Rashford’s England colleague Dele Alli, who is at the club on trial, hoping to land a full-time contract after several years of injury that have kept him away from action.

However, according to Fabrizi Romano, it’s unlikely that Rashford will move to Como.

Romano wrote on X, “Sources close to Marcus Rashford play down reports/links with Serie A side Como.”

“No talks taking place or planned and not an option under consideration for Marcus/his camp.”

Surprise Premier League club want Marcus Rashford, could be reunited with friend and former teammate – report

Premier League rivals West Ham United have become the latest club to join the race for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Last month, Rashford admitted he is ready for a new challenge away from Old Trafford, with United open to listening to offers for him.

He has been linked with several top clubs around Europe including Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and even Como 1907.

However, Milan’s interest appears to be the most advanced, after Rashford’s agent and brother recently jetted to Italy to hold talks with the Rosonneri’s executives.

Now, the reliable EXWHU employee [via West Ham Central] has revealed that the Hammers are also eyeing a move for Rashford.

“Although extremely unlikely due to several European giants wanting him, Marcus Rashford is under consideration.”

According to Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, there has been nothing to suggest that the Irons want a permanent deal for Rashford.

West Ham want a loan deal and will insist that United subsidise most of Rashford’s hefty £325,000-a-week. To be specific, West Ham want three-quarters of his salary to be covered by Ruben Amorim’s side – a shocking demand that the Red Devils are unlikely to entertain.

The news coincides with West Ham’s appointment of former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter as Julen Lopeteguis replacement on Thursday morning.

Lopetegui was sacked on Wednesday after a dismal eight months in charge. He left the club in 14th place in the Premier League table.

Potter put pen to paper on a a two-and-a-half year contract at the London Stadium.

If Rashford were to join Potter’s ranks, he will become the latest player to swap United for West Ham after Aaron Wan-Bissaka completed a move last summer.

Jesse Lingard enjoyed a superb spell in east London when he signed on loan from United for the second part of the 2020/21 campaign.

Man Utd attempt stunning PSG hijack as ‘concrete’ talks held with PSG over Rashford swap for £71.2m winger

Manchester United are in ‘concrete’ talks with Napoli over swap deal for Marcus Rashford and top Paris Saint-Germain target Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to reports in France.

Rashford wants to escape Old Trafford having announced his desire for a “new challenge” last month, but options are thin on the ground thanks to his £300,000 per week wages and his lack of interest in a move to Saudi Arabia or Turkey.

Talks have reportedly been held with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, with negotiations with Milan supposedly more advanced, though the Serie A giants aren’t willing to stump up more than half of Rashford’s £300,000-a-week wage for a loan move.

A report on Thursday revealed that West Ham have asked to be ‘kept informed of Rashford’s situation’ after Graham Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui as manager ‘but know he is more likely to join a top European side’.

That might just be Napoli according to L’Equipe, who claim the Red Devils are looking to hijack PSG’s move for Kvaratskhelia.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier on Thursday that the Ligue 1 giants are ‘in direct contact’ with Napoli over a move for the Georgia international, who’s managed 30 goals and 29 assists in 107 appearances in Naples.

He wrote on X: ‘PSG and Napoli are in direct contact… as PSG step up efforts to make it happen now, open to offering players (including Milan Skriniar) plus cash in the deal. It now depends on Napoli decision.’

And while L’Equipe confirm that PSG remain the frontrunners to sign the 23-year-old winger as they look to find a replacement for Randal Kolo Muani, there’s also been ‘concrete contact’ between Manchester United and Napoli over a deal for Kvaratskhelia that would see Marcus Rashford move in the opposite direction.

                  The report states:

‘As Randal Kolo Muani’s departure is looming, PSG did not let go of the Georgian winger of Naples, a priority of their transfer market last summer. Contacts are always constant and intermediaries influential in the market have been trying in recent days to find a solution to see the file move forward in concrete terms.

‘There is a huge difference compared to the last few months: the Neapolitan leaders are not closed to a sale of the 23-year-old player under contract until 2027.

‘In this case, PSG should have significant competition in England from Manchester United. The departure of Marcus Rashford will push the Mancuniens to strengthen themselves offensively. Here too, concrete contacts have already begun in both directions, with the idea of a possible exchange between the two men.’

Man Utd fans would prefer PSR points deduction t0 Mainoo sale
It’s not particularly surprising to see stories touting the potential sales of United’s previously untouchable youth players. Given the ruthless cost cutting enacted by the club over the last year, especially the ridiculous cutting of the £50 ‘steward of the match’ bonus, it would be mad to think they wouldn’t consider reaping £200m+ from the sale of three players.

Holjund was bought for big money and though this could perhaps be reclaimed in a sale the actual profit from the amortised fee wouldn’t be large enough to replace him adequately. However with Garnacho and Mainoo being youth products their transfers would do wonders for the balance sheet.

Though Garnacho is a darling of the Stretford End I do think his transfer would at least be justifiable. The issues with attitude and the obvious ill fit with Amorim’s system would both temper the anger from the fans along with what would presumably be a significant transfer fee. Mainoo is a different case.

The United faithful have an established history of protest against the club though I really think this may turn to riots if they try to sell Kobbie, especially if this was to another Premier League team. Our Stockport Seedorf may never live up to his potential or our expectation but he is the shining light in this team. In the future, like Rashford, we may be discussing a transfer away that is best for all parties but that isn’t where we are now, no fee could be justified to the fans.

This whole thing is hopefully a bit of contract wrangling, leaks and counter leaks by agents and the club before a middle ground is found and new contracts signed. Hopefully. Though it’s worrying that it feels plausible.

One aspect of Amorim’s system that was likely attractive to United was the singular static nature of each position. A left back doesn’t also need to be a midfielder and a winger, there’s no need for a world-beating defensive player maker to hold the midfield. No hybrid players are needed, instead each position requires only a few fundamental characteristics that are fairly ubiquitous. This makes selling your star players less damaging because replacements are easier to find and cheaper.

United fans aren’t particularly experienced with selling good players and perhaps that is something we might have to get used to in the future but the connection between the fans and academy players should not be underestimated. Rescuing us from the Glazer scourge only to leave us a soulless husk won’t be tolerated. I’m sure fans would rather take the PSR points deduction than watch Mainoo be sold to Chelsea, even for £150m.
                    Dave, Manchester

                    Dear Ruben Amorim…
After the shock Anfield result on Sunday, you now have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever, and put Arteta out of his misery this Sunday, and end Arsenal’s season in early January. Fully expecting you to do so.
Stewie Griffin (Will be the worst thing ever if the awful Rasmus Toilet ends up making Arsenal’s attacking clown car look rubbish! 😂 Arteta earning a higher wage than serial winner Carlo Ancelotti is LOL)

                    What to do with Arsenal?
Let me start by saying that I really like Mikel Arteta and have great respect for what he has done with Arsenal, the players he has brought in and developed, the couple of trophies we have won, the huge change in culture and the great connection with our fanbase.

There can be little doubt that the foundations for success are largely in place at Arsenal and that success is within much closer reach than it has been for some time.

That doesn’t mean that there can’t be a discussion about what happens next though. An adult, intelligent discussion that is, not the sort of disrespectful drivel spouted by the likes of ‘Stewie Griffin’ in this very mailbox. Seriously mate, are you even okay?

This is a big January for Arsenal and Arteta, no question. If ever a team was in need of fresh faces and fresh legs, it’s this one. We need to add quality, energy, attacking verve and yes….clinical finishing.

We all know it can extremely difficult to get exactly who you want in January, and maybe financial regulations are making clubs more risk averse, but if Arteta and the board cannot see that we need something, then I think questions should be asked. I keep reading that we can’t get our targets until the summer, but I don’t know if we can just sit on our hands and wait, not with Liverpool well ahead and the likes of Newcastle and even Forest looking so strong.

So what if we don’t make any moves? Well, maybe this current phase has run its course? Maybe someone else (I don’t know who, incidentally) needs to take the baton from Arteta and run with it; building on the solid foundations he has put in place and taking us to the next level, making the next step towards challenging regularly for the biggest trophies.

This season is far from over, but the warning signs are there and surely we need to act to make sure it doesn’t peter out into another year of ifs buts and maybes. If it does, then maybe it will be time for someone else to have a go.
Gareth (It’s my birthday tomorrow and I’d like an Isak please 😁)

…Brother, can you spare some time?

Arteta is on borrowed time, arguably has been since the last day of the season last year. The general consensus in the overwhelming majority (even, in part, amongst themselves) was that this year, Arsenal needed to really come good with an impressive season that finally ended in silverware and, while they remain just about still in four competitions as it stands, the last 5 weeks has put a massive dent in expectation that they are going to put a further foot forward in 24/25.

It is of course important to remember that this is Arteta’s first senior job, and from an objective standpoint, he’s still done some genuinely impressive things to a team that were quite literally unable to take a throw-in correctly before he took over. Just the fact that he’s managed to go unbeaten against the top-6 is noteworthy to an Arsenal side that couldn’t catch a cold at the top stadiums, let alone a point.

Before factoring some of the key take-aways from the “not as good as City” seasons, huge points totals comparative to their history, sizable goals scored (for a team without a striker), impressive defensive displays. However the fact remains that the wider football community can see this is Arsenal’s best squad since the early 00’s and “2nd” will only ever be first loser in the sporting world – with many of us able to see some glaring errors alongside the impressive positives.

I still maintain the draw at City in the run-in last year was a great result – but being unable to overturn West Ham and Fulham at Christmas is unacceptable – having a team that remains exceptionally immature 2-years after an (arguably acceptable in the circumstances) immaturity cost them the title in 22/23 is something that can only be levelled at the manager.

All this before factoring that the, ahem, “confident” fella himself would likely admit that it doesn’t matter if it’s his first job, he felt qualified enough to do it to take it in 2020.

However, let’s put something to bed. While Arteta’s Arsenal have spent money in his time, it is only comparative to his peers not excessively beyond them.

Since Arteta took over at Arsenal (total spend since Summer 2020 according to a reputable outlet):
                    City: 750m
                    Arsenal: 782m
                    United: 885m
                    Newcastle: 573m
                    Spurs: 822m
                    Aston Villa: 618m
                    Chelsea: 1732m

Even Liverpool, who impressively in the last 5 years have “only” spent 536m in acquisitions, are heavily reliant on three players bought for 189m combined over 5 years ago.

So yes, there are myriad reasons to knock Arsenal after a Christmas where they find themselves hoping again rather than expecting and even Arsenal supporters themselves (the real ones, and the parodical ones round here) will often admit their flaws if you get them in a comfortable setting, but it is disingenuous (and dare I say, a little lazy) to suggest Arsenal’s purse strings have been comparatively looser than their peers.
The Right Dishonourable Harold Emmett Hooler
P.S: Say what you want about Haaland, but you do wonder what a slightly more “humble” Arteta might achieve.

                    The unspoken value of Trent
What is often said is Trent is a great creative passer and a bad right-back.

What is never said is how often his creative passing has been a benefit for defence.

One thing Trent provides at right-back which no other player can do or does do, is that when we are being pressed high and have no time on the ball to pass it out Trent can most of the time launch a long pass to either flank with no time on the ball with both feet.

Normally when teams do this the ball ends up at their opponents’ feet and the pressure is back on straight away, it’s a short respite. When Trent does it (most of the time) it ends up at the feet of Salah or Gakpo alleviating pressure from our defence and bypassing a high pressure. As good as Van Dijk is he needs time on the ball to pick out those long passes and he generally only does it on his stronger foot.

This is something we miss when Trent is off form or not on the pitch and we lacked it against United. Sometimes I think that people just see sliding tackles as the only way to defend and when a player doesn’t do that they think he’s a hindrance to the defence. Trent isn’t very good one on one, that’s no secret. But every season he ranks top in Liverpool defenders for interceptions and top 3 for ball recoveries so he can’t be that bad.

And like I said, his real attribute for defence is his ability to alleviate pressure by feeding accurate long balls to forward positions while retaining possession – something which I honestly can’t name another defender in world football can do. Plenty of defenders can pass long, but they can’t do it under pressure, and they can’t do it with either foot.

I think a lot of people place too much value on passing “the eye test” which Trent often doesn’t when defending. We’re all subject to that bias but we should also ignore that bias if the number suggest it’s wrong. Or if there are unseen factors, like with DMs well often ignore the lack of goals and assists if they look like they run everywhere all the time (even though the best DMs don’t do that)

Liverpool fans no worse than any other
It was only a matter of time before opposition fans turned their ire on Liverpool fans with regards to “The Trent Situation” as if they would not behave in the exact same way and are morally superior and sure enough Aman obliged in todays mailbox.

We are suddenly the worst fans in the world, shameless, disgusting, ungrateful, entitles yadda yadda yadda. It really doesn’t warrant a reply but lets do a thought experiment shall we to see if this is true.

Imagine Trent was a Real Madrid player, brought up through their academy, a local lad, global superstar and possible future captain who was thought to embody and understand what it means to be a Real player.

Imagine now that Trent was winding down his Madrid contract in order to obtain a big money move for himself to a rival European club citing friendship issues and personal glory as his main reasons.

Imagine then he played like he did at the weekend against Barcelona in the Bernebeu in front of all those lovely tolerant patient Real fans.

What do you think would happen?

I honestly think his life would be in danger. He would have had to have been escorted from the stadium and they would be burning effigies of him across the City.

I’m not saying Liverpool fans are better than anyone else, we’re not, but we’re no worse or no different.

Except perhaps Real fans who have shown themselves over and over again to be highly demanding and unforgiving of any flaws in their team or players.

Trent is a highly talented footballer but a deeply flawed full back and an inadequate midfielder.

Liverpool fans have backed him to the hilt his entire career and rightly so even when costing us European cup finals etc etc. We are hurt that he wants to leave us now, why wouldn’t we be? It’s called a normal human reaction.

But if he does go to Real caveat emptor as my business teacher used to say, the grass is not always greener, sometimes its wavy and white and, won’t love you like we loved you Trent, hopefully your bessie mate has a nice soft shoulder to cry on if it all goes wrong but I genuinely hope it doesn’t cos your a good man and gave us moments we’ll never forget.
                    Dave LFC

                    Pride and all that
Despite my disbelief and protestations, I’m somehow forty years old and feeling every day of it this morning after a thoroughly enjoyable game of 5-aside cage football last night. Due to my first child arriving ten weeks ago and all the glorious chaos that has ensued since, I have gone from playing 5-aside three or four times a week to a measly once every four weeks at best. However, my love and obsession for this beautiful game remains as strong as ever.

I was never blessed with a velcro touch or exquisite passing and my speed and stamina is waning considerably as Father Time marches on. I have two footballing moves in an attacking sense (fake to pass one way and go the other way instead as well as the more exotic ‘fake backheel move) and both continue to be surprisingly effective as I gradually accept my new role is more of a defender who makes the occasional foray forward rather than a pacy box-to-box marauding midfielder.

Last night, in a fit of pique, an opposing player (new to our Tuesday game) blatantly dived under the slightest of jostling and demanded a penalty. He was not only roundly laughed at and disparagingly called a few choice names but he was told in no uncertain terms by the veteran founders of the game that we play every Tuesday to “enjoy the game without anybody getting injured as we’re all getting on a bit and any diving or acting the bollix won’t be tolerated.” Sheepishly nodding, the guy got on with things and that was the end of it.

The reason for this story is that we 5-aside players can only dream of being as talented and successful as the pros but we are superior to most of them in one sense: having some fecking pride.

I cannot understand how the incessant diving, play-acting, calling for a throw in when it clearly isn’t yours or pretending to be shot or headbutted that takes place in the Premier League and professional football is tolerated as much as it is. Gaining a slight competitive edge isn’t enough justification for looking like an absolute tit and going down in everyone else’s estimations surely? It’s beyond pathetic and embarrassing and if it was called up more and punished more severely, we might rid ourselves of this plague that taints the beautiful game.

                    Just a thought.
Eric (my two moves work wonderfully against new players, significantly less so against players who know me!) Galway

                    And finally…

The video was filmed recently and uploaded on the 7th of January to social media.

The two academy products were seen training alongside side United Women player Gabby George.

They were completing training drills where they showed off their one-touch passes and movement off the ball.

                      — RH Elite Coaching (@RHEliteCoaching) January 7, 2025

Jesse Lingard left the club in 2023 and recently completed his first season in South Korea for FC Seoul.

He played 26 matches in the K League, scoring six times and providing three assists.

The Warrington born player’s season ended in November and will begin again in the spring.

More interesting for United fans though will be the presence of Angel Gomes, who left the club in 2020 to join French side LOSC Lille.

The 24 year old has been highly impressive since, making 129 appearances for the Ligue 1 side. He was also rewarded for his fine form by receiving his first call up to the senior England team last year.

Interestingly, Gomes will be out of contract in the summer and he has been spectacularly linked to a return to Old Trafford.

The midfielder is reported to be “open” to a switch back to United and it has also been rumoured that new coach Ruben Amorim would also be attracted to the idea of seeing Gomes back in the famous red shirt.

Gomes has been described as a player who “has the skill and balance to weave magic no matter how deep his position is” and would be an exciting addition to Amorim’s squad.

He has recently been out of action due to an injury picked up earlier in the season but did return to the squad to face FC Nantes last week and may see a return to first team action this week when Lille take on Auxerre.
