Rashford transfer: Spurs enter race for ‘bang average’ Man Utd star in Postecoglou push

Tottenham are reportedly now among a number of clubs interested in signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United this winter.

Rashford wants out of Old Trafford having announced his desire for a “new challenge” last month, but options are thin on the ground thanks to his £300,000 per week wages and his lack of interest in a move to Saudi Arabia or Turkey.

Talks have reportedly been held with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, while negotiations with Milan are supposedly more advanced.

A report on Thursday revealed that West Ham have also been asked to be ‘kept informed of Rashford’s situation’ after Graham Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui as manager ‘but know he is more likely to join a top European side’.

A sticking point for Milan could be their unwillingness to stump up more than half of Rashford’s £300,000-a-week wages, and that’s also sure to be a problem for Tottenham and their penny-pinching chairman Daniel Levy.

The Daily Mail claim ‘Spurs are looking to bolster their attacking options and rescue their season despite being the second-top scorers in the Premier League’ and have therefore joined the clubs vying to sign Rashford this month.

The report claims manager Ange Postecoglou is pushing for the club to sign new forwards amid the conceding form of captain Son Heung-min and the injury problems for Richarlison and summer signing Wilson Odobert.

Spurs hero Chris Waddle has warned his former side against a move for Rashford, questioning the “desire” of the England international, who’s been “bang average” for the last season-and-a-half.

Waddle told Prime Casino: “There’s a lot of mind games going on with Marcus Rashford. I think there are a lot of doubts about his desire, his passion and his ambition.

“If he went to Tottenham and the fans were singing his name, would he be happy with that and think, ‘That’s it, I’ve arrived, I don’t need to do that anymore.’

“Whoever gets him, they’re going to get a player for six months. After that, can he keep that appetite and hunger to go on? Can he prove to everybody he should be playing left wing for England? To do that, he needs to be playing week in, week out for his club side.

“What is he doing at the minute? They said he was ill for the Liverpool game, not in the squad. No disrespect, but he’s not young anymore. People keep talking as if he was 21. He’s not.

“He’s had an in and out career. We all know he’s got ability, but we’ve seen this story with so many players before. Players like Dele Alli, Ross Barkley they come on the scene, burn brightly and then disappear. Both of those players were talked as world-beaters when they were younger, and they couldn’t do it over the curse of their careers. There are so many players who were tipped to become the next big thing, and it didn’t happen for them. The only person that can change it is Marcus Rashford.

“I expect him to move on. He needs to move on from Manchester United. Whether it’s a loan until the end of the season, whether it’s permanent, he must think to himself, ‘I’ve got to get away. I’m wasting time, I need to get in the England squad, I need to be playing, and I want to show everybody how good I can be.’ He had that season where he scored loads of goals, but that is becoming a distant memory. He’s been bang average since.”

£20m Championship revelation set to snub United, he has another transfer destination in mind – report

Jobe Bellingham, the younger sibling of Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, is reportedly set to reject any overtures from interested Premier League clubs including Manchester United.

United are believed to be keen on securing midfield reinforcements for Ruben Amorim, either this month if funds become available, or during the summer transfer window.

A report covered by The Peoples Person last month relayed that the Red Devils were eyeing a swoop for Jobe, who has had an incredible impact at Sunderland since he joined them in 2023 for a modest £1.5 million sum.

The midfielder has already notched four goals and three assists in 23 appearances this season, playing a crucial role in the Black Cats’ push for Premier League promotion.

It was stated that United have been keeping tabs on Jobe and he has impressed the club’s recruitment staff.

However, it seems like the Red Devils are headed for disappointment, with Jobe set to snub them, just as his brother did in 2020.

According to The Sun, Jobe is poised to remain at the Stadium of Light this month, despite admiration from Arsenal and United.

The Sun add, “Despite the major interest from English clubs in Jobe, it looks as though he could follow the same path as his sibling and look to join a top European club to play more games at a higher level.”

Other clubs thought to be keen on securing Jobe’s services include Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Jude’s former club Borussia Dortmund.

It’s understood that Sunderland want to keep hold of “their biggest asset” to give themselves the best possible chance of climbing to the top flight.

A price tag of £20m has been quoted for the 19-year-old.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they take on Arsenal in the Emirates in the third round of the FA Cup.

Change of plan for United breakthrough star with January move to the Championship looking likely – report

Manchester United have quite a few first-team players looking for the exit door, either temporarily or permanently, this January due to a lack of minutes.

Toby Collyer is one of them, with the 21-year-old having last played a senior game back in September. He was expected to enjoy a breakthrough season at the club, especially when Erik ten Hag at the helm.

The Dutchman was a fan, and handed him his debut during the Community Shield, while he also played in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

But his fortunes have taken a dramatic nosedive since Ruben Amorim joined the club. The new coach’s arrival coincided with an injury to the defensive midfielder and since his return, he has yet to see a single minute of action.

Collyer has not seen a minute under Amorim

The former Brighton academy ace has been part of five matchday squads under the Portuguese and The Manchester Evening News claims that the youngster is eager to test himself in the Championship should he receive any offers this window.

“Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is open to a move to a Championship club this month if a suitable offer emerges.

“Collyer, 21, has only made three appearances for United this season and has not played since the 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the League Cup third round on September 17.”

The report, however, does not mention whether it will be a permanent or loan exit but given Collyer only recently signed a contract extension, the club are unlikely to give up so soon.

        Open to Championship departure

But there again, Joshua Zirkzee was also signed for big money in the summer while INEOS are currently mulling over selling academy graduates to raise capital in order to steer clear of PSR concerns.

And selling homegrown stars classify as pure profit and Collyer also does fit the bill. However, should the former England U17 international depart, it would leave Amorim dangerously short on numbers in the middle of the park.

Both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have also been linked with exits and the head coach cannot possibly sanction yet another departure this window. One of the experienced duo might end up staying, especially if Collyer were to leave.

There is also loan interest from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City and it will be interesting to see where the academy graduate eventually winds up.

Italian giants close to deal that will pave the way for Marcus Rashford’s move from United

Manchester United’s January transfer window will have to include some sales if they are to bring any fresh faces in to add to Ruben Amorim’s underperforming squad.

Marcus Rashford is one of the names likely to leave Old Trafford this month having fallen out of favour with United’s new head coach.

Italian giants AC Milan are leading the race to sign the 27-year-old and are doing all they can to get the deal done in the coming weeks.

As reported by local media, the Serie A club are close to moving on wide man, Noah Okafor, in order to create space for Rashford in the squad.

Talks have taken place with RB Leipzig who are growing confident of landing Okafor, who is valued by Milan at €16 million.

The German club are hoping to take the 24-year-old on loan with an obligation of buying the Swiss forward at the end of the season.

Having seen their initial offer of the loan with a €12 million fee rejected, Leipzig have now offered €14 million as the end of loan fee.

However, Milan are holding out for the full €16 million which they are expecting to be met by the Bundesliga side.

This would then facilitate the move for United’s front man which will be seen as a major coup for not just Milan but Italian football as a whole.

Despite missing United’s last six games, Rashford is revered across Europe and if the newly crowned Italian Super Cup Champions can get a tune out of him, there is still a player in there.

The deal that will see Rashford leave Manchester is likely to structured similarly to the one that will take Okafor to Germany, meaning United will still need to be creative if they are to add to their ranks this month.

Amorim will be desperate for players with the qualities that suit his style, having seen his current crop painfully try to adapt to his system since his arrival.

However, signs of life appeared at Anfield on Sunday with a strong showing producing a creditable 2-2 draw against the runaway league leaders and arch rivals, Liverpool.

The Portuguese coach will now be looking for a consistent run from his side as they languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Manchester United desperate to offload ‘teary’ flop in embarrassing sale of 101.5m summer signings

Manchester United desperate to offload ‘teary’ flop in embarrassing sale of 101.5m summer signings

Manchester United are not the only club regretting a summer signing but theirs is certainly the most expensive of all mistakes to be rectified in January.

            Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Chelsea)
This was surely not the future sold to Dewsbury-Hall in the summer.

The move made plenty of ostensible sense, immediately reuniting Leicester’s Player of the Season with the manager who made their promotion possible, drafting a future England international into Chelsea’s midfield jumble for £30m, or the approximate value of whichever academy graduate their finger landed on next.

In reality, it looks more like a scratching of Leicester’s PSR back as an apology for snatching their manager away. Dewsbury-Hall described Chelsea as “a club people grow up watching and hoping to one day play for” when he joined and six months into his Stamford Bridge stay, that hope goes on.

All nine of his starts have been in the Europa Conference League or Carabao Cup, with only 18 of his mere 55 Premier League minutes coming since the end of August. Chelsea are already willing to sell; the only surprise is that he hasn’t been abandoned in the reserves just yet.

            Joshua Zirkzee (Manchester United)
With Manchester United suddenly open to the idea of parting with three previously unsellable assets in what might well be Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s greatest 4D cost-cutting exercise yet, it seems fair to say that no-one is safe at Old Trafford.

That was uncomfortably accurate for Zirkzee on his last visit, when Manchester United supporters cheered his substitution during what now looks to be a perfectly acceptable defeat to Newcastle just before the turn of the year.

It was a fork in the road for many. The immediate speculation was that Zirkzee was desperate to leave for the contentment of Serie A after struggling to make an impact in England. If his removal after barely half an hour in the Newcastle game was not enough, the wider reaction and subsequent reported ‘tears’ would be impossible to overcome.

Manchester United themselves certainly seem to have admitted their mistake and are scrambling around for a receipt in the blind hope of recouping their money.

But conflicting reports suggest Zirkzee actually wants to stick it out and turn things around in a fight for his place and future. It is hard not to think that scoring – or even just taking on – that chance against Liverpool might have helped.

            Jaden Philogene (Aston Villa)
After the mutually beneficial deals painstakingly negotiated through the summer between Aston Villa and Everton, they are back at the table to discuss similar matters in January.

Everton pushed to sign Jaden Philogene in the summer and have not been deterred by a record of no goals or assists but one red card in 535 minutes on the Villa periphery.

Unai Emery’s side triggered their buy-back option on the forward after a fine season with Hull to fend off interest from Everton, who remain enticed by what Philogene can offer to their hilariously non-existent attack.

But the Toffees have already met their loan limit and so the financial viability of a permanent deal is being explored, to which Villa have been entirely receptive.

Apropos of nothing, Villa have sent Lewis Dobbin out on a second loan and Tim Iroegbunam was not playing for Everton before suffering an injury following their entirely legitimate summer moves. Amadou Onana has been decent, mind.

            Ben Brereton Diaz (Southampton)
The record-breaking wait goes on for a Premier League win. Even Marvin Sordell and Emmanuel Villa are wincing at a run of 24 games without victory which does not look like ending soon.

His choice of clubs could certainly be questioned, even taking into account any uncontrollable obsession with fighting against relegation in red-and-white stripes. Sheffield United and Southampton have both won a single Premier League game with Brereton Diaz on their books but the Chile international missed out through injury or the ignominy of being an unused substitute against Everton.

Even within that year-long misery there are peaks and troughs. Things seemed bad at Sheffield United last campaign but six goals in 14 appearances for a team which finished bottom was impressive on a personal level – enough for the Blades to come sniffing around again and Brereton Diaz to consider their advances.

“I think Ben was an obvious one, not playing for Southampton and he was here last season,” said Chris Wilder amid reports of a loan return being put in place with a view to a permanent move. This next time next year he’ll be joining the Saints promotion push to escape Sheffield United’s slide back down into the Championship.

            Sam Johnstone (Wolves)
For a team famously not blessed with a particularly flexible budget, Wolves were bizarrely eager to send some of their limited funds to Crystal Palace in the summer. It cost £10m to move Johnstone between benches at Selhurst Park and Molineux, where he remains behind the really not great Jose Sa.

Gary O’Neil was pleased with the added competition Johnstone provided in the goalkeeping department but the other read is that the England international conceded 13 goals in his first five games, was dropped due to injury and form, came back in to let in four goals in O’Neil’s final two matches and was immediately relegated to the bench once more as soon as Vitor Pereira was appointed.

The good news is that his reputation remains strong enough for another Premier League move to be possible. The bad news is that it could be to Spurs.

“We need to be…“: star explains exactly how United can sink Arsenal in Sunday’s FA Cup clash

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has insisted that he and his teammates must be “sharp” at set-pieces when they face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup this Sunday.

United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates last month. Both Arsenal goals came about from corner-kick routines, with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba finding the back of the net.

Defending dead-ball deliveries has proven to be a major weakness of United this season and it’s something Ruben Amorim has repeatedly stated needs to be addressed.

Hojlund sat down with club media and singled out set pieces as Arsenal’s biggest threat against the Red Devils.

The Dane said, “It’s a tough first opponent and away as well. But we’re going to go for it and, and try to go for it again this year.”

“It’s a good game and the Emirates is a nice stadium. The pitch is very good. I had my debut there as well. So it’s a special place for me and a good opponent. I’m looking forward to it.”

“It can be [a good thing that we played there not long ago], if we do it right. I think we need to be sharp at set-pieces, they have been very good on that, and they scored twice from that last time around.”

“So yeah, very focused there. Just trying to keep improving and do what the manager’s saying and I think we will be good.”

On working under Amorim, Hojlund remarked, “It’s very nice to have a manager like that, you can see the passion and fight inside of him and he gives a lot of freedom to his players, but it’s a very good balance.”

“It’s still very early days and our results haven’t been good recently but it’s about where we will be and I think if we keep going like this, we are on a rough path, but you have to get over that period and then start seeing a response. It’s important to start winning to give some confidence.”

United are currently the FA Cup holders after beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley last year. There was a big scare for the team on their way to the final, as they came close to crashing out in the semi-finals stage vs. Coventry City.

“Obviously the game [Coventry] was not the best but in the end it was part of the story that we write for the win and getting through there was very important.”

“On a very rumbly season, I remember us being very focussed and very ready for that game [FA Cup final]. You could see that from the first moment the whistle blew and it was two special goals from special players. The second half always gets a bit… It was about winning.”

“They were pressing on, so we defended well and got there in the end. My mother and father were celebrating with me and I gave my father my medal to wear that night. We’ll try to win more.”

Arsenal vs. United kicks off at 15:00 GMT.

Man Utd transfer medical booked kerching
Not a great deal has happened so far in the January transfer window and Manchester United have sod all money, but obviously that cannot be allowed to temper the excitement/clicks:

Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd to seal first Ruben Amorim deal today as £21m medical booked

That’s the Express LIVE transfer blog there, wanting you all to believe that a) Man Utd are about to make a signing and b) the medical is booked.

There are few more powerful words in the transfer news dictionary than ‘medical booked’ so this is massive.

Obviously we are all old and cynical enough by now to know that the ‘first Ruben Amorim deal’ to be sealed is not a Ruben Amorim deal at all but the culmination of season-long talks with Amad Diallo about a new contract.

As for the £21m medical (private healthcare is really f***ing expensive), it eventually transpires that it’s actually a £20m medical. At Ipswich. for Jaden Philogene.

Silly boys have missed out the word ‘training’; they even had the hyphen.

                Reunion…together again
There’s obvious interest in where Marcus Rashford goes next after Manchester United, with AC Milan the clear favourites followed by Borussia Dortmund.

                Or, if you’re the Express:

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford ‘offered reunion with Dele Alli’ at newly-promoted side

So many things irking Mediawatch here, including but not limited to a) the quote marks quoting nobody, b) the idea that he would seek a ‘reunion’ with a player he played three England games alongside, seven or eight years ago and c) that hyphen.

The story – which originates from Gianluca Di Marzio, who has had an awful lot of Como stories of late – is that Como are interested in Rashford. The biggest story would be if Como weren’t interested; they are in a relegation battle and scoring barely a goal a game.

Fabrizio Romano has since dismissed the story as a non-starter from Rashford’s end – it would be the equivalent of him joining Wolves – and yet here we are, somehow pretending that Rashford is somehow massively motivated to train alongside Dele Alli.

                Or, as seen on MailOnline:

‘Serie A club ’emerge as SHOCK contender to sign Marcus Rashford thanks to links with ex-Man United star’ – as European clubs weigh up move for wantaway Red Devils forward’

‘Emerge as SHOCK contender to sign Marcus Rashford thanks to links with ex-Man United star’ is one hell of a bombastic way to interpret the idea that Como ‘would also leverage the presence of Raphael Varane (now the club’s ambassador) with whom he played in England’.

Can you become a ‘contender’ just by telling a friendly journalist that you are? It really does seem so. And which football could possibly resist the lure of Raphael Varane AND Dele Alli?

‘I find this particular trend to be sickening’
With the caveat that nobody else clearly gives a flying f*** about the things that bother Mediawatch, we have to return to Wednesday’s theme of the first-person headline masquerading as a quotes piece or interview, leaping on the bandwagon of the Google Discover ‘curiosity gap’ for such headlines as ‘I had a meal in this five-start restaurant and pooed my whole self out of my body’.

                On Monday it was this…

‘Man Utd signed Rasmus Hojlund instead of me – now I could finally join them’

As we noted: ‘There is no tricksy attempt to make this technically correct as with so much other Reach headline housery. It’s presented as a straightforward direct first-person quote from Randal Kolo Muani, and it isn’t. Mediawatch doesn’t think it’s being oversensitive in suggesting this isn’t really okay, and nor is freedom to just make up quotes and put them in headlines a road down which anyone should want to tread.’

But clearly the Mirror are getting some joy from this particular tactic, and when the Mirror get joy from any particular tactic, you can expect it to be repeated 427 times.

                So here we are again…

‘I rejected Man Utd transfer – I could still end up calling Marcus Rashford my teammate’

Christian Pulisic there, being bizarrely quoted in a headline despite literally never going on record as saying he rejected United. Instead we are treated to 2019 quotes from ‘Robin Walker – who has remained close to Pulisic since he coached him in his youth at Brackley Town’, which is really quite some billing.

Interestingly, the story appeared two hours later on the Manchester Evening News:

‘I turned down Man United transfer – Marcus Rashford could still end up my team-mate’

And for that little headline twiddle, ‘Jake Bayliss Sport Writer – U35s’ (quite possibly the most depressing job title in media history) claims a byline.

Manchester United are set to be handed an opportunity to sign the prolific Jonathan David, as per reports.

The Lille star has been one of the best forwards in Europe over the last 18 months or so. This season alone, the Canadian has bagged 17 goals and assisted five times across all competitions.

However, Lille are bound to lose their talisman, who has entered the final months of his contract at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The 24-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign and is now free to hold negotiations with teams outside France over a summer move.

Amid this, GIVEMESPORT are reporting that United are “expected” to be offered David, as they look to strengthen their attack under Ruben Amorim.

With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to consistently put the ball in the back of the net, United could jump into the transfer market for another striker.

With the Canada international’s contract running out, a move for him could be “ideal” for the Red Devils, who aren’t in a strong position to splurge big on another attacker.

Hence, they may “swoop” to hand their new gaffer an experienced player “on the cheap.”

David has the movement and finishing ability to lead Amorim’s frontline. He has more league goals (11) than Hojlund (2), Zirkzee (3), and Marcus Rashford (4) combined.

However, the Mancunians may face competition from West Ham United, as they have also been reportedly handed the chance to sign David.

David’s arrival should also push Zirkzee further down the pecking order. The Dutchman is said to have a difficult relationship with Amorim.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the tension between the ex-Bologna striker and the Portuguese tactician has prompted the United hierarchy to consider an early exit of their summer signing, who has attracted interest from Juventus.

The January transfer window is now wide open and teams across the Premier League are weighing up moves in a bid to improve their squads for the second half of the season.

Despite not being tipped to spend much money this month, Manchester United are one of the clubs hoping to be active and creative in the coming weeks with Ruben Amorim in desperate need to add extra quality to his ranks.

It is also a time to put the feelers out for potential summer signings with teams desperate to hang on to their star men until the end of the current campaign.

As reported by The Mirror, United are doing just that with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo whose form has led to him being courted by a number of Premier League clubs.

Arsenal and Newcastle have registered their interest in the Cameroon international with United the latest to throw their hat in the ring of potential destinations for the player, should he leave the Bees.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has already quashed the notion of him leaving West London this month but given his form since arriving in the Premier League it’ll be hard to stop the big fish turning his head come summer time.

Mbeumo has been a consistently high performer since joining Frank’s side and has been in sensational form since the start of this season, in particular.

The 25-year-old has struck 13 times in his 20 Premier League games so far and has been a major reason behind Brentford’s good form in the English top flight.

It’s reported a bid of £40 million might be enough to tempt the Londoners to part ways with their star man in the summer market. Mbeumo is reportedly happy to stay put until then.

Mbeumo would certainly fit the Amorim system with his versatility in forward areas and work rate no doubt appealing to United’s new head coach.

Before then, however, Amorim will have to navigate United to the end of a season that the club as a whole will be happy to see the back of, given the form on the pitch and the upheaval off it.

United produced their best performance of the campaign against league leaders Liverpool at the weekend and will hope to build on that this Sunday as they start the defence of their FA Cup crown away to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
